Here, have two VERY important OCs! A beautiful Greater Sooty Owl and a gorgeous mixed breed, one teasing the other.
The Tenebricosa is indeed fortunate to be this hulking monster's mate. And yes, the brown owl is that large.
Please excuse the ugliness of this piece of art. It's a sketch, and besides, I like it and I am proud how it turned out.

Went to a big quilting convention today and am feeling inspired so here's todays edition of
What the fuck do you mean that's a quilt??
Most people have no idea about how much craft goes into quilting or how much quilting as a craft, art, and even a science has been evolving in recent years. So here's my personal appreciation post
And btw the flat images do NOT even do these quilts justice, especially in terms of the absolutely amazing and detailed texture embroidery that a lot of quilters are using these days. Up close the texture and the sheer detail of many of them is just stunning
These are all from the Road to California quilt show 2023

1st Place: Portrait
Title: Sharing the Moment Maker: Hollis Chatelain Quilter: Hollis Chatelain Design Basis: Maker's Original Design African-American women are a powerful force in motivating their families and communities to vote. I wanted to create a piece about this and highlight the fact that African-American women did not receive the right to vote in all 50 states until 1965 when the Voting Rights Act was passed. I met Phyllis at a rally. I was drawn to her and asked if she would be my model. Without hesitation she said yes. She later brought her friend Loretta with her.

Title: Augustinii Maker: Andrea Brokenshire Quilter: Andrea Brokenshire Design Basis: Maker's Original Design “Augustinii” is a blue/purple variety of rhododendron my momma planted within her forest garden. I was lucky to be home on when it was in bloom. When I see this quilt, I am reminded of my momma and how she loves to tend her garden and “grub in the dirt.”

Faith’s favorite past-time is bungee-jumping off the side of her airship, with Bubo, her pet clockwork owl. This quilt depicts the photo Faith took on her latest jump to test her brand-new camera and selfie stick.

Title: Homage to Birches Bare Maker: Jessica Noble Quilter: Jessica Noble Design Basis: Fabric recreation of Kesler Woodward's Birches Bare, acrylic on I fell in love with Kesler Woodward’s Birches Bare painting and knew I had to create it in fabric. I cut about 1,700 pattern pieces out of freezer paper and then fused fabric, through the fall of 2019 until the pandemic started. During this time, I homeschooled my two children and the quilt sat in quarantine. I quilted this freehand on my midarm in the winter of 2021. I managed to take the majority of the summer of 2022 on the binding.

Title: Toroweap Overlook Maker: Sandra Mollon Quilter: Sandra Mollon Design Basis: Derived from a photo Toroweap Overlook, in the Grand Canyon National Park, is an incredible view of the Colorado River. When John Slot sent me the photo to consider for an art quilt, I realized the complexity of the amount of the pieces it would require, but knew I had to do it. Raw edge fused, machine quilted, small amounts of media.

CW: Gore, Death, Puke, Decaying flesh, Buboes, Blood, Description of the symptoms of the different plagues in The Black Death, Gruesome description of how the representation would look like, Please tell me if anything that should be put as a warning was not, thanks.
The most feared plague in history, The Black Death.
Mainly the bubonic plague mixed with its two more deadly brothers the pneumonic plague and septicemic plague. It was the deadliest plague of the time as it ran through Europe, Africa, and Asia and conquered any village, town, and city it found itself in, flooding the streets with blood, mucus, and rotted flesh as once healthy humans dropped dead from the plague that seemed to come from nowhere before it dragged everyone to the Hell it had seemed to have spawned from. It did not care who you were, it did not discriminate, rich or poor, loved or hated, known or not, it would blow out the little life that you had. It thrived off the fear and only seemed to grow stronger as another soul joined the long chain of victims that had already succumbed to the disease. Anywhere from twenty to sixty percent of the population of the time was taken by it.
The perpetrator? Yersinia pestis. The carriers? Fleas. The spreader? Rats but some say it could have actually been hamsters that were stowaways. But how were the rats able to spread? Trading ships that jumped from town to town leaving a deadly gift as it sailed away that would lead to the death of all that were unfortunate enough to live there.
Now you may ask what would happen if you were to catch it and let me tell you it was living torture. It would start with a simple flea bite but that flea was infected with Yersinia pestis causing it to build a barrier in its stomach so no blood could be digested or go into its stomach causing it to build up and be infected by the bacteria, and this blood would be thrown back up by the flea onto the wound infecting it as it would be absorbed into the bloodstream. From entering the bloodstream it could take one of three routes: the lymphatic system, continuing through the bloodstream, or directly to the lungs. If you were lucky enough for it to infect your lymphatic system then you had a sixty percent chance of dying meaning you had a forty percent chance of surviving. Even though you had more chances of surviving it did not mean that you were saved from not suffering, from one to seven, or if you were lucky eight, days of contracting the disease was when it would show symptoms. At first it would trick you into the false belief that you only had the flu. You would have a general feeling of being ill, lethargic and weak which only grew into worse fatigue as the days went on, followed by chills and a high fever which anyone would know just seems to be like a normal cold but then that soon developed into muscle cramps in your aching limbs as seizures overtook the body. Then it would present the symptom that gave it the name the bubonic plague, buboes. These were when the lymph nodes would balloon to become large, painful, smoothe swellings which would occur near the original area of infection alongside the groin, neck, and armpits which would continue to grow until they burst. You also had the issue of your skin slowly beginning to necrotise as it died alongside the lenticulae which were small black dots that would be scattered across your body and gangrene took over your lips, nose, toes, and fingers which all caused severe pain to the point you would rather die there and then instead of waiting it out to see if you had the lucky chance of surviving. Of course there were other symptoms like heavy breathing as your lungs felt like they were being held down by rocks, your own body becoming like the flea as it would start to vomit gallons of infected blood, coughing, gastrointestinal problems, and spleen inflammation, but in some cases even the sleep would be disturbed to the point of insomnia where sleep would be impossible to get as your were forced to stay awake to feel all the pain that riddled your body. But then the worst of the systems came at the final stage as delirium came and took over any rational thought as all organs began to fail from the disease overcoming them and causing them to shut down which only led to a coma, but it all ended the same way, death.
If you were unlucky enough for it to infect your lungs first or just infect your lungs before the other systems became worse then you had a ninety-five percent chance of dying meaning you had a five percent chance of surviving. To make the pneumonic plague even worse you could develop it even after being infected by either the bubonic plague or the septicemic plague; it could also be caught from not just it infecting your lungs after a bite which infected the bloodstream but by also breathing in air borne droplets of the bacteria from another thing that was riddled with the plague. As it would normally be caught after having bubonic or septicemic plague it meant that at first you would present all the symptoms from the other plagues before experiencing the specifics of the pneumonic plague. At first you would think you have a fever but a severe one as headaches, nausea, and weakness run rampant as if it was trying to warn you that this would be no normal bubonic or septicemic plague. Luckily compared to the bubonic plague the time you would suffer with this plague was a great short, even though it would take around three to seven days before the symptoms showed as soon as the symptoms worsened or even showed you could guarantee that you would be dead within thirty-six hours, most likely less. You would be constantly vomiting for three days straight as your lungs slowly began to feel as if they were being sewn shut at each bronchus, only leading to each breath becoming shorter and shorter as you seemed to constantly be coughing and rasping for the tiniest bit of unrestrained air. Then soon enough your lungs would spew out a bloody and watery mess that would stain your tongue with its mercury taste which you would continue to cough out in between the vomiting until you went into shock as your full respiratory tract went into failure and just stopped, finally leading to death.
But if you were the most unfortunate person alive on Earth at the time that every God seemed to hate since it stayed in your bloodstream and completely infected your blood it meant you had no chance of surviving as you had a hundred percent chance of dying. It made the other two diseases seem like child’s play as it normally only took around fourteen hours before it shut down the body, worse of all it could even kill you without showing any of the symptoms. Like the others you would think it was a common cold due to the fever, chills, and low blood pressure but soon enough severe abdominal pain would set in as it felt like you were dying due to the extreme amount of diarrhea which would be accompanied by nausea that only led to severe vomiting. But soon enough the vomit and diarrhea would be filled with blood until it was fully red as the body lost most of its clotting resources from the tiny blood clots that had formed throughout the body so it could no longer control the blood which started to bleed into the skin and organs creating red or black patches of rashes or bumps which could be seen on the skin. The blood clotting also caused necrosis as tissue and organs would die from the lack of blood flow as it all leaked into where it should not, the most obvious spots of the decay were the gangrene in the fingers, nose, and toes. Then the bleeding would extend from not just bleeding in the body but blood coming out from the rectum but most noticeably the mouth and nose where it would come out like a waterfall. Obviously due to the blood leaking into everything it would cause difficulty breathing as it would fill the lungs and deprive it of the blood outside the lungs that was needed to exchange the carbon dioxide for oxygen. And with no blood to deliver the oxygen needed for the organs to live they all would go into organ failure causing the body to go into shock before the final moments where everything went back as it was taken over by death.
As it can be seen all of them had the same outcome, death.
Luckily nowadays the plagues are a simple pest if the person has access to treatment to stop it from progressing further but at the time that The Black Death ran rampant no one had the luxury of those treatments leading most to die who caught it. Masses upon masses of bodies continued to build up only attracting more of the rats then the ones that had already been attracted to the large towns by the excrement and rotting butcher’s meat that made a river through the streets. With more rats that withered away from the disease it just meant more fleas would jump to more human hosts to use which only led to more living corpses to roam the streets as the disease turned people into skeletons while still living before turning them into an actual corpse.
It was understandable as to why humans of the time would be so scared of such a thing as to them it just seemed like their fellow mortals were dropping like lowly flies that would eat away at the flyblown flesh that continued to pile away in mass graves to create more nests for their larvae and eggs to incubate inside. Imagine the terror and fear that must have filled their minds as they did not understand pathogens at the time, to them it would have seemed like divine wrath but no one could think of a reason as to why their Almighty would betray them like this as everyone appeared to be on their best behaviour. They needed something to blame. They found something to blame.
Simple rumours turned into truths.
Somewhere in England there was said to be a village. Small, nothing of concern as it was like every other village of the time. Like every other village it had a butcher, a silent man who was rumoured to once be a knight but no one knew why he was not anymore. He tended to be quiet, avoiding others who were not his friends and family. It was said that he loved his nephew and that if he had enough swigs of barley that you could get him singing and dancing on the roof or you could convince him to give you his primest cuts of meat. He was deemed as normal, he was like everyone else, until one day.
No one knew what happened. It was supposed to be a joyous day to celebrate the coming of winter but it was far from that. Nearly the whole family was found butchered with a precision only expected to be known by a trained killer. The lower left leg and most of the fingers of the right hand of the older brother laid in a puddle of blood but they could not find the rest of his body; the mutilated body of the brother’s wife was spread around slightly from each different part as if when she was being attacked the culprit had went after another member while still holding onto the part it was hacking off; the body of their son was curled into the corner clutching onto the leg of his mother while out of the stab holes that covered his body in ten folds nearly making him unidentifiable oozed out blood into a bloody puddle that collected around his body; and finally the grandmother of the family who was found decapitated in her rocking chair with her head being found outside within the well. The only one not found dead was the butcher and when he returned, covered in blood, everyone turned their suspicions to him. When he tried to explain that he had been out hunting but had been attacked by a large grey man no one believed him, especially when they saw the crazed look within his eyes that could only be produced by when they had let Beelzebub into their soul. Everyone agreed to grab their pitchforks and chase him out so no more could be hurt.
It was only a few months before the figure started to appear across the world. People from the village murmured to other villages and beyond when they heard what the figure looked like in its earlier stage that they believed it to be the same butcher infected with the plague of Beelzebub to infect the world with their sin to bring more to Hell. Everyone believed him to be the reason for the spread of the plague. It was said that if you were to see him within the fields outside of any town, village, or city that all the inside were destined to die.
The Ghost of The Black Death.
A figure that would strike the fear into the hearts of all.
A horde of rats followed behind him in trails as flies buzzed around his head, if he was near you would always see a Black Shuck which commanded a storm alongside it as if they were his hounds of doom brought along to give the townsfolk warning of their dire fates and to pray to the Almighty while they were still apart.
A black coat hid the majority of his body as bloodied rags of old hunting gear of a peasant hung off of skeletal remains with a jaw hanging off his neck as if it was a necklace as it was tied there with rope. Messy blonde hair spread out in all directions as blood leaked out from the tear ducts in a false mockery of the tears that millions had split in their last moments. No nose or bottom jaw could be found, decayed off long ago. The face looked skeletal as teeth, gums, and a tongue were exposed to the bitter air that reeked of death and loss as the cheeks were tattered in form as more skin continued to flake off as it continued to decays; once blue eyes so full of life were left sunken, dead as if they were another victim that had succumb to the plague that the Ghost was said to bring alongside him. A trail of buboes surrounded his neck as if it was a noose to which he could hang himself with as the tail was marked by a diversion of buboes that wrapped around and under his arms to around his groyne. His spine and ribs jutted out for all to see underneath the greyed skin which was littered with blackened patches of decay as branches of red veins leaked and bleed out to leave a path of blood in his wake for all to track him by. Still, as he rotted away, vague faints of the muscular body that had been far gone from its prime lingered where it once remained. The bottom of his calves with his feet and the bottom of his forearms with his hands had turned black and mummified from the decay and gangrene that had taken them over, leaving no remaining sensations within the hands to feel the warmth of a human ever again for the rest of eternity.
If you were to see him late at night, staring into your soul you better pray that The Ghost does not turn you into another soul like him.

Daemons of Chaos: “Family” Ties
Nurglish Daemons
Tumblr media
A family and explicit about it. They refer to Nurgle as their father and to their lesser daemons as brothers and children. Minimal infighting. Nurglish daemons can often be found in their tallybands singing songs about bubos and disease. Family connections and affection does not preclude typical daemon behavior, such as cannibalism. Emotional ties between daemons are common and Plaguekin will not only avenge their siblings, but treat for their quick and immediate restoration to physical form by offering instead the souls of their killer to Grandfather Nurgle.
Khornate Daemons
Tumblr media
Khornate daemons regard each other as a curious mix of brother and rival. Infighting is not only common but encouraged, expected even, between Daemons of similar rank. Strong honor culture-- sibling ties based on affection are rare and that affection will not preclude challenges to the death. Khornate daemons are power interested and will covet the positions of those above them in power. However, they will not use underhanded means to attain these positions. Khornate brotherhoods usually begin as honor-bound pacts and it is these agreements forged in blood and fire that inform their loyalties to one another.
Slaaneshi Daemons
Tumblr media
Slaaneshi daemons tend to dislike one another, but this rarely results in physical infighting. Slaanesh’s kingdom is a court, one full of intrigue and gossip and every daemon is in competition with every other daemon to be favored. When violence does happen, it’s quick and discreet; most daemonettes and keepers of secrets cannot stand each other, as noted in several sources across the lore, though sisterhoods are known to happen. For instance, the two Daemonettes who discovered the killing potential of the Hellflayer. That being said, Daemonettes will viciously defend their siblings from non-Slaaneshi. In classic sibling fashion, intra-family fighting is fine, but two Slaaneshi will put aside their differences mid-fight if an foreign third party tries to intervene.
Tzeentchian Daemons
Tumblr media
Much like the Slaaneshi, their infighting takes the form of scheming and lying. Tzeentchians acknowledging their kinship to one another, but it hardly inspires any kind of loyalty. A tzeentchian will betray a sibling to a non-daemon and only cares for it’s own power. Other Tzeentchians are rivals and threats, either distant or immediate, and only slated to be neutralized. To an extent they feel this about Tzeentch himself. Of the chaos gods, Tzeentch deals with the most traitors and turncoats. Naturally; he is the Lord of Lies, Master of Schemes and Deceit, and his children are formed of him.

“Ok, ok, yeah, but…d’ya think it’s possible someone might, I dunno, think I’m. That I could be. You know. At…trac…tive?”
Each syllable went up a couple of notes, accompanied by a lift of his eyebrows, and somewhere along the line he’d drawn in on himself, hands worrying the brim of his hat at his chest while he smiled like he was both eager and terrified for the answer. His heart hammered and a flush rose in his cheeks and this was quickly becoming one of the most humiliating moments of his life.
They stared at him silently for a moment, and then Félix chuckled.
“Ey, I know what this is,” he said and gestured with his own glass of lulada. “You’re going through The Thing. You get to a certain age, you start getting insecure about yourself, your looks…don’t worry, I’ve heard it happens to guys sometimes.”
Julieta narrowed her eyes at him as he took a sip of his drink. “Really, Lex. I think I remember you spending a few months casually mentioning that you were still ‘potent,’ and when Pepa dared you to prove it we ended up with Antonio.”
*
José continues to try and settle back into life in the Encanto with mixed results. Bruno get diagnosed with "midlife crisis" and takes the opportunity to give himself a little makeover. They still don't talk, but progress is made. Meanwhile la familia Guzmán are still absurd, Dolores drops a bunch of chisme, Julieta and Félix practice playing tejo, and genderflipped!Bubo shows up.

Science Communication and Nature Interpretation
While becoming a nature interpreter is accessible to anyone, there are some aspects of it that can advance ones interpreting abilities- science communication is one of these aspects. Science communication can be defined as the practice of informing and educating people about scientific topics, whether this be astrophysics, biochemistry, ecology etc. While there are many scientific topics, the three that I have mentioned all play roles in our natural environment. For example, biochemistry is the study of biological processes that make up living organisms. So, while I know that the human body is comprised of various elements that complete biological processes, understanding these elements and processes can give me such a deeper understanding of what it means to be a human. This is where science communication comes in.
Making science communication accessible and available for everyone is an important task. We're lucky that we have access to such advanced technology where one google search will take me to a ten minute YouTube video where Hank Green teaches me the ins and outs of cellular respiration.
While YouTube videos are a fantastic way to learn about scientific topics, I don't think this is the only way. In previous blog posts, I talked about the privilege a lot of people have of being able to get outside and explore nature around them, regardless of if you live in the city or in the country. I decided to come up with a simple scientific experiment that people could do at home:
Buy some bird seed (or make your own mix) and place it outside your home- somewhere you can watch it.
Once the birds come, start identifying them and keeping track of how many birds come from each species and when. Bird identification can be hard, so taking photos of the birds and identifying them later is a good idea.
Over the span of a few weeks, tally up the totals and see which birds came the most or the least. Were there species of birds that seemed to show up frequently together? Did some birds show up first thing in the morning only? Others only in the evening or after dark?
Think about these questions (and come up with some of your own), and try to do some of your own research on the answers to these questions. Try to come up with your own hypotheses based on the data you collected and see if you were right!
Basic science experiments like this allow people to conduct their own research while encouraging them to look at the scientific aspect of nature. It's so rewarding to understand why certain aspects of nature operate the way they do, and allows us as interpreters to develop a deeper connection and appreciation for the natural world.
Do any of you have an idea for another simple science experiment people could do to try and understand the science-side of nature? Let me know, I'd love to hear it!

If Encanto is in the Disney universe, and Descendants is meant to be basically a world in which all the different Disney movies coexist...then Encanto could be in the Descendants universe.
Now I’m imagining Mirabel and Camilo attending Auradon Prep.
Not for their entire high school years, only for the last couple. The idea is, Auradon wants Encanto to be part of it, and Encanto was like, “We like our solitude, because mixing with outsiders didn’t end well the last time, sorry.” So they negotiated a treaty, and part of the treaty was that children of the ruling family, aka the Madrigals, attend Auradon Prep just like the children of all the other ruling families in Auradon.
By the time the treaty is finalized, the only Madrigals of age to attend Auradon Prep are Camilo and Mirabel, who are both about 17 (this is a couple of years after the Encanto movie). They do not want to go, but they have to. So they show up, only to be overshadowed by the sudden influx of VKs, since this is shortly after the end of D3.
They don’t mind that much, though. They spend most of their time with each other. They’re friendly-Camilo is the type who’s always part of a group, yet doesn’t have a true friend among them-but things are confusing for them. Also they think everyone’s a bit weird. In turn, the AKs and VKs think they’re weird.
They’re horrified when they find out about most of the villain kids’ home lives. To them, family is everything. Sure, it can be difficult, but the entire Madrigal family loves each other and tries to do what is best for each other (even if it turned out that what was for the best actually wasn’t). So the idea that there are families that purposely do not act in the best interests of their children? Mirabel and Camilo are on the side of the VKs, thank you very much.
Also, at this point, Dolores has been married to Mariano for about a year, and is expecting their first child. Camilo and Mirabel are very mad to miss the birth of the baby, as well as Isabela’s engagement to Bubo Marquez (the guy that the original draft of the movie had her in love with, hence her not wanting to marry Mariano, before that part got deleted). They spend a lot of the time on the phone talking to the Madrigals back home. Nothing like being on the phone with your cousin asking for updates on your sister who is giving birth while you’re sitting at the lunch table with your classmates.

Random Ancient Owl headcanons cause Why Not ™️
*Asio’s ancestor is Alba(the guy from the Dirk fic). I’m kinda bored of the obligatory owl oc named Bubo/Tyto so I’m calling him Alba from Tyto alba aka the Barn Owl.
*Noctae? Social anxiety 1000%. Borderline agoraphobia.
*Even though I’m not the biggest fan of Harry Potter, I imagine the houses working the same. At a certain age, you go to the magic object and you get put into a house based what the thing tells you. People in the House of Math and Philosophy are more critical and ask lots questions about deep shit for how young they are. Like asking where their parents are from and just taking it back and back until they can’t take it back anymore. They’re also naturally gifted at math, obviously. And people from the House of Engineering and Leadership by being natural leaders and while also being naturally gifted at math, they more focus on building things using the math they know while they’re younger then just plain math. The rest I think is kinda obvious.
*I get Ancient Geek/Roman Empire vibes mixed with the 70s for some reason 🤷‍♀️
*Noctae tried in his special little Noctae way to hint that he knew he was going to die to Aegolius, but we saw how that worked out. Spoiler alert: he didn’t recognize the hints. Fucking Bastard Man
*The ancient owl language is a mix of Mayan and Latin. How that would work, idk I’m not a linguist
*The Otus dying yet being able to see his hologram thing was the only thing to truly stump Noctae.
*Since Noctae saw the future with math, he saw the events of the game. But since he’s social anxiety 100, he told no one

The father had staggered into my office a few days earlier. He had told me that his three children and his wife had all taken ill, afflicted with some debilitating disease. The youngest had contracted it first, and it had quickly spread to the rest of the family. He was afraid that soon he would be infected and that no one would be able to care for one another. The man was sweating bullets and scratching at his armpits, neck, and groin. I asked him to stay with me for a check up, but he quickly refused and left. I spent the next two days trying to figure out just who he was and where he lived. On the third, I prepared my materials for a house call. On the fourth day, I went to the homestead.
The homestead was a small farm located a good ways out of town, about a three hour walk and roughly half that by horse or wagon. It had been a hot, humid, July, and today was no exception. The month’s weather appeared to have taken its toll on the crops- a good deal of them were dead. I stopped my horse up near the house and dismounted it. I grabbed my various bags- one with general instruments, one with medicinal instruments, and one with surgical instruments- and walked up to the door. I knocked four times, with approximately two minutes between each series of knocks. After an additional three minutes, I loudly stated my name and purpose for visiting. No one answered. I decided that I would not have ridden out here for nothing, and so I tried the door handle and found it unlocked. I opened the door and was immediately struck by a putrid stench that would have knocked a lesser man off his feet.
The house was decently sized, with a kitchen, a living space with a fireplace, a master bedroom, and a room for the children. A good deal of dust covered the floorboards and the furniture. Several rats scurried into the dark corners, alerted by my entrance. The entire house was hotter than outside, a wet kind of heat that enhanced the godawful smell. It was the smell of rotten food, almost, mixed with a distinct scent of pus and blood reminiscent of what I had encountered back during my military days with the Union. This was not going to be a good day.
I called out once more, announcing my name and occupation. There was no answer, but for a wet wheezing that- ah. Interesting. The labored breathing seemed to emanate from the master bedroom and the childrens’ room. I went into the latter first- you should always put the safety of children above any adult.
The door was tough to open, but I managed to bash it open on my third attempt. I stumbled into the small bedroom and- by God. The smell was easily ten times what it had been in the main area of the house, but that was not what stunned me. Rather, it was the sight of the two children in the beds. Their silhouettes were no longer human- their bodies were marred by hundreds of swollen glands that had almost sealed them to their beds. The pus-filled things grew upon one another, creating something like a tower of abscesses that sprawled across the body. The growths were focused on the armpits, groin, and neck, but they had managed to cover a great distance. The child on the left suffered from these slightly more than the one on the right- the left boy had almost his entire face covered by blister-like nodules, but for one of his eyes. It stared at me with a combination of pain, fear, and hope.
After observing the buboes, I noticed the cause of the blood and rot smells. The children’s extremities had gangrene, and what was uncovered by the growths was black and shriveled, especially along the fingers and toes. As I walked into the room, rats scurried off of the bodies. They had congregated around the necrotized tissue. I could not bear to look at what they had done to these children. Instead, I kneeled by the leftmost boy and took out my least favorite instrument. I injected an overdose of morphine into his carotid artery and did the same to his sister on the right. Then I sat in the room with them until their breathing had stopped.
Once I had completed my duty, I went into the master bedroom. There was a single bed, with one- no, with two occupants. The disease had almost merged them together, but I managed to see a small shape laying on an adult body. I walked closer, and could see telltale signs of female physiology on the adult body. This was evidently the mother and the youngest son. The mother was less far gone than her two children- she was able to speak.
“Mrs. Carolson, I presume. My name is George Waller. Your husband came to me four days ago to ask for my assistance in this matter.” I said.
    “Help me.” She wheezed.
“Ma’am, I am afraid that this is beyond the capacity to cure. I- I may have to-” I broke off, unsure of how to continue.
“Did you- save them. My children.”
“I- yes. Don’t worry, they’re fine. The disease wasn’t as hard on them as it was on you.”
She looked at me with tears in her eyes. “Do it. Please.”
I did the same to her that I did to her sons. I turned to the youngest child that had grown onto her body like a mountain of abscesses. The child- it was already gone. This was quickly becoming the worst day of my life. I left the room and sat out on the back porch. There was a shed and four graves out there- children lost to tuberculosis, probably. I’m not sure how long I sat there- it was enough for the sun to set on me, for sure. It was then, in the middle of the night, that I saw a rustling in the shed. I remembered the father, and immediately went to open it. Maybe there was one person I could still save.
I almost died the moment I tried to walk in. There was a massive hole in the ground, one that went deep enough that I could not see the bottom. I could still smell the rot, pus, and blood coming from out of it. I returned to my wagon, grabbed a lantern, and immediately began to descend into the darkness.
It was tough. I had already had a long day, and although the hole leveled into a slope after the first ten feet, it was still steep enough that I needed to watch my step. I walked down there for an hour at least, and as I did the tunnel walls became distinctly less earthy and more, uh, meaty. It smelled like the people had, and I made sure to keep my distance, but I believe that there were abscesses lining the walls. I could see bits and pieces of bone- nothing human, more like rodents and the occasional predator- although there were a few bison skulls embedded in the walls, too.
Eventually, I came to the end of the tunnel. It turned into a wide, circular space with a central stone dais. On that dais was the father. He was relatively healthy- there were a good deal of abscesses on him, but it was nothing intensive surgery couldn’t solve. I was so excited that I could save someone that I immediately walked towards him. He looked at me, and the terror in his eyes stopped me cold.
That saved my life, because if I had continued any further I would have walked right into one of the things that was scurrying about on the floor. It was quadrupedal, like a rodent, although it was much larger. If I had to estimate, the creature was about the size of the average dog. It also had a tail and a head, but that was where the similarities ended. Its skin resembled a doll’s, some kind of white porcelain plate. It was severely cracked, exposing flesh like that of a human’s, blistered red and leaking pus. The creature had a small, whiplike tail. It had forelimbs with opposable thumbs and prehensile feet. The animal had a porcelain face, like a pale woman covered in makeup. The face was vaguely humanoid in outline, but the painted patterns on it were wild, abstract, and bright. The eyeholes were crusted over by dried pus. It looked at me and opened its doll mouth, hissing in surprise. A wet, fleshy tube covered in abscesses waved at me. There were two ratlike buckteeth sticking out of the end of it. Some kind of yellow fluid oozed out of it. A similar fluid leaked from behind the creature- looking at one of the others, it appeared that they had a distended, slightly prolapsed anus. These things- I do not know why, but they reminded me of Rats.
I looked at the man on the dais, and saw that there were lines carved in the floor that lead to it. Pus leaked from his body, down through these lines. The lines led to massive pools of the pus, where the Rats lapped from. Again, the father motioned to me. The Rats noticed his movement and piled on him. Tubes licked at him and the abscesses progressed. Then the Rats looked back at me. I turned and ran.
I sprinted through the tunnels, hoping to escape the Rats. I could hear them behind me, scrabbling along the floor. My foot caught on something, and I almost fell. I stopped myself by pushing my hand into the wall, where it punctured with a wet squelch. My hand went in up to the elbow before it stopped. I pulled my hand out of the meaty wet wall and continued to run. Then I clambered up the hole and out of the tunnel.
I listened for the Rats for about five minutes. Then I mounted my horse and rode away. The next day, I returned with my horse. We were laden with oil and matches. Once the house finished burning, I made sure that the hole to the tunnels was blocked. I went back to my office, where I wrote this letter. I believe that I have been infected by the disease- my armpits, groin, and neck all itch. I have felt a general malaise about me, interrupted by occasional chills. Finally, and perhaps most damningly, I have noticed the growth of pus-filled abscesses on my body.
Do not worry about the infectiousness of this letter- I have sterilized it properly. Please do not try to save me- I will likely be already dead. I have prepared an overdose for myself, and I will burn down my office. I have not been home since before the incident, so do not burn down my house.
I ask that a Mr. John Downes take over medicine for this town until we have a new doctor, and that all of my remaining possessions be given to them. I ask for my body to be buried next to my wife and child, may they rest in peace. And although I have no right, I ask for a Christian burial. I may have previously expressed that I felt there was no God, but I now believe that to be the product of naivety and grief. This world is far larger than any man has dreamt of, I believe. I used to believe that man produced all the ills of the world- war, sin, and death were our own fault. I now understand that all of our science, all of our knowledge, it pales in comparison to what is truly out there.
And although I have only thus far interacted with the most dismal, horrible parts of our existence, I hope with all of my heart that there is something equally beautiful, equally wonderful waiting out there for me. Where there are Rats, there must also be Lions, yes?

I have strong negative opinions of most of the movie's writing but ur RIGHT about the aesthetics. My fav detail is actually the welding goggles Bubo wears. They're based on Inuit sunglasses that reduce glare by making really tiny slits instead of big eye holes. Little details like that are so freakin neat :o
honestly kathryn lasky herself said there were points of the movie she wished she thought of lmao which i think is funny but i dont disagree- i think its less so the specific writing, and more so the concepts that i like. if i could mix my fave points from the movie n the book together... i think id love the result. the main things i think i dislike about the movie are just the typical, cliche animated kid movie tropes and the fact they had to cram ending so much.
also yes!! i always loved that. the art book really shows how much they  cared about the details of the movie and in terms of art/aesthetic the movie was flawless on that imo. ill always ache over the fact we didnt get like, at least  trilogy out of the movies, probably would’ve given more space to not have such a rushed ending....

So about your Skeksis offspring AU idea, who were the parents of these offsprings?
*INHALES*
Here comes the shipping part of the debate. People please I beg you don't mock me and see me as a stupid fangirl I am more than that XD Ok so in case people forgot : they are hemaphrodites to me so all are partially male and female so there is absolutely 0 Mpreg. Rather Hermpreg
This happened 900 trines ago when the Skeksis were still young and beautiful so don't worry no awful mental image. Also I must I love how between SkekGra who loves UrGoh and SkekTek who loves his little pet, the series proved us that they ARE able to love as a species and are not purely hateful, it adds more dimension and that encouraged me with this tragical headcanon (Because that's not an AU to me that's in my main headcanon continuity)
The oldest kid and first Skeksis born in a natural way was SkekViir, 6 years old in human years. She was the offspring of SkekAyuk and SkekEkt (I blame my friend SkekLa on DeviantArt for having made me ship them. They are often seen hanging out together in the movie and I love the contrast in designs and personalities), the latter was the one who got pregnant. SkekEkt wanted her to be an elegant "lady" and pampered her a lot, and SkekAyuk loved doing eating contests. They hugged her bloody corpse for hours after the Emperor's infanticidal orders
The second oldest was SkekSosh, who would have been around 5 human years old, was the offspring of SkekLach and Skekli, SkekLach was the one who got pregnant (they were not mates but it was like, an accident between a one-night stand), they forgot it was the mating season, the only season they are fertile). The former loved teaching him how to count with money they collected and even though they didn't love each other they agreed to try to do it again and so SkekLi accepted to bear their second child when the infanticidal orders were given, and was ordered to give his child and give his newborn when it would be born. With a huge paternal/maternal instinct due to pregnancy hormones, SkekLi attacked the Emperor but the latter was defended by SkekVar shortly before the children execution by the Emperor's hand was given. As a punishment, he was open without any anaesthesia and his fetus was ripped off his uterus before his belly got sewed back because no grown Skeksis known by the gelflings should die. The stress and grief due to the loss of theur xhild and unborn child on the same hour gave SkekLack anxiety bubos for life disfiguring them, and as to cope they went in full denial blaming them due to "knowledge" (knowledge of maternity) and became one of the cruellest coldest Skeksis
The second youngest was a toddler named SkekIkr. She was the offspring of SkekShod and SkekOk (I BLAME SKEKLA AGAIN IT'S CUTE OK), SkekOk was the pregnant one. Finally the latter had someone to listen to his old texts and books, sure she ended up falling asleep but at least the peaceful sleep told him she liked it ; as for SkekShod, their toddler was the only source of noise he loved, he who usually adores silence and is quiet. Needless to say, when that source of noise went silent forever by the Emperor's blade, they went even more introvert than they already were, their work was now all they had left. Inspired by @grosskelly's comic (That's sadly not canon since he obviously gives 0 shit about Brea THE WASTED POTENTIAL DAMMIT) featuring SkekOk, I really, really liked the idea of him having a secret soft spot for babies. Mixing it up with my headcanon, he's mentally and physically unable to hurt babies and toddlers. But since Brea is either a teen or a young adult in the show and that's an age his child never could reach, he feels no empathy
And now, what is going to make you boo me. The youngest were twins, SkekNetk and SkekSsaz, born only a few weeks before being slaughtered with the others. And they were the offsprings of... SkekSil and SkekUng HEY IN MY DEFENSE MANY CHANGES OCCUR IN HUNDREDS OF TRINES ALSO THEY USED TO BE LOOKERS AND SKEKSIL USED TO BE A TEASE IN MY HC CONTINUITY btw he was the one pregnant (it's a fan tradition I often read in fics to have him bear twins I couldn't break it lol). They were the only people SkekSil intended to be always honest to and they were an extra motive for him to do alliances and try gaining power, and SkekUng was extremely proud and already saw them as future strong warriors. Of course, it would sadly never happen. But contrary to SkekEkt and SkekAyuk who are still mates, or to SkekShod and SkekOk who are no longer mates but still do have feelings for each other deep down (staying together too long just hurts them with memories so it became an on-off relationship), their way to cope was to irationally put the blame on each other, especially SkekUng on SkekSil since he always was the angry type unable to handle his emotions. They already not were the most perfect couples since their way to flirt was basically arguing and trolling especially on SkekSil's side with his whimpers he knew infuriated his mate and since they both wanted power (at least they supposed they would share as mates), but now it became individual and no longer just arguing and trolling but fighting and annoying with malevolent purposes. As trines passed, they got more and more hateful with each other to the point of basically wanting each other humiliated and banished as we see in the movie
As for SkekZok, he was pregnant from an unknown Skeksis (he basically fucked around for rEliGIouS RItuAlS) but he hid it, with the intent to find a solution to hide and save his child while remaining the great Ritual Master. But in the end all the stress about the situation and having to find a solution led to him having a miscarriage he kept secret. He had contradictory thoughts about this : on the one hand he was extremely sad about the loss and worse he had to keep it secret and pretend nothing happened, on the other hand he no longer had to be upset about what to do with the baby
After all of that, no other Skeksis baby was ever made again. And the Skeksis were already mean, assholish, vain, selfish, arrogant and bigotted, but this tragical loss of ones they loved drove them insane and not being able to take revenge since the hierarchy of their species makes them completely submitted to their leader, they romped on any living thing they met out of frustration. More cold, cruel and sadistic, the thought the species would no longer go on if they died didn't help at all and also made them and the others paranoid on death, old age and the possibility to go extinct
All because SkekSo didn't want to risk his throne to a newer generation
