we're all checking what cookies a site is trying to include when it gives you the pop-up encouraging you to "accept all" cookies, right? that's a thing people are doing? because dear sweet fucking jesus some of the things they stick into that list blatantly are.... absolutely absurd. I don't even care if you're still accepting them after you read through the list if that's what you wanna do but at least KNOW what you're allowing. holy fuck.

Ok so I don't know if your still taking requests but if you are it's daminette and marinette is over so the whole wayne family and her are chilling and they think they hear someone so they do a heartbeat scan and they count an extra one so they're searching they manor and they're on guard they alfred ask all the girls if they're pregnant and the guys are nervous because one of them could be a father so they scan all the girls and they find out mari's preggo and it's a whole chaotic ordeal

Note: Sorry this took so long, I was trying to figure out the best way to tell this story and I finally got the idea after watching TT episode Fear Itself. 

Whoever’s idea was it for the family to watch a horror movie during a fucking thunderstorm, Marinette just wants to end their lives. She was having a good day despite feeling sick in the morning, so being informed that tonight’s movie was horror-based was interesting. The majority of the time, a horror movie wasn’t a bad idea, but the moment the film ended, and the lights randomly shut off, the screaming begins.

For a house filled with heroes vigilantes, they sure do know how to scream and act like they’re in a horror movie real quick. Marinette could feel the need to throw up grow as the sense of someone watching her suddenly grows. At first, she thought that it was Damian or any of his brothers, but how could that be when everyone disperses the second, they heard movements that were not from either of them. Damian was reluctant to leave Marinette to her own device, but since the manor was so large splitting up was the best option.

“Come on, Mari, you’re Ladybird, stuff like this is nothing.” Marinette murmurs to herself in an attempt to keep her nerves at bay. That doesn’t go well, as the creaking noise suddenly fills the hallway. She sure hopes that it’s the air conditioner making those sounds. Marinette was slowly regretting not taking Alfred’s lead and follow him to the kitchen, at least she knows the kitchen area better than the damn halls. The amount of time she still gets lost in the halls just to find the gym is an outlandish number.

Ding. Ding. Ding.

Clenching her teeth, she fumbles to unlock her phone. Despite using it as a flashlight, she also didn’t want to accidentally turn the only source of light off. The second her phone unlock, thunder and lightning decided to join forces making her jump at the sudden flash of light and a loud boom.

“I am so killing Jason…” She mutters. Finally, she is able to see the notification. It was a series of messages stating clear and the location. There were at least five out of the nine that were currently in the manor. They had invited Duke, but he opted out the second he realizes who was picking out the movies. Apparently, any movie chosen by Jason could only mean bad things and Duke, surprisingly, wanted nothing apart of it.

The creaking noises remain active, something that made walking down the hall and looking for a potential intruder much more difficult. Had the creaking stops, this would have been much easier to delegate which room needs searching.

Back downstairs, the Bat-family all decided to meet up in the living room. Marinette had yet to make an appearance. Damian was growing impatiently worried for his beloved, so much that he was practically stabbing the ground with one of many katanas.

“Master Damian,” Alfred chastised seeing the new marking on the floor. Great another reason to keep buffering the floors at least twice a month. Alfred knows that everyone’s worries were running high. They still had yet located the cause of the sound—a potential intruder—and it’s not like they would go into the Batcave without a problem, but they didn’t want to take that chance.

“She should have been here by now,” Damian grumbles placing the sword back into its sheath.

“Demon, we’re talking about Pixie, the girl literally has problems getting to the gym every once in a while, and that’s with light.” Jason’s words slowly dawned on the family. He’s right. Marinette may be officially apart of the family now, but the designer literally stays in like five places within the manor: hers and Damian’s room, the kitchen, the living room, the bathroom nearest to her, and the Batcave. Beyond those options, it’s better for Marinette to have a guide, which is usually Titus, and sometimes Alfred when he doesn’t have anything to do.

“I got the tracker ready, sir. Should I place it on heartbeat mode?” Alfred shows them the tracking device with a knowing look on his face.

The Batbros race to the device only for Tim to grab it and put it in the right settings.

“Hold on, wouldn’t it better to search for heat signatures?” Dick asks—well he was thinking aloud for the most part.

“Ideally yes, but the readings can become messy if we’re all in the same room or if what we are dealing with doesn’t radiate heat. It’s best to go with a pulse or in other words a heartbeat. Got any more questions, Dick.” Tim states glaring at his oldest brother. They were all worried about Marinette, but it was upped times ten. “Now are we going to try and find ‘spresso and whoever even dared to enter the manor?” Tim was a man on a mission. In fact, they all were.

No one dared to object to Tim’s claims. Damian was impatiently tapping his feet against the ground, and soon there were thirteen pulsing dots going off the tracker. Tim mentally did a headcount, with him included there were nine people in the room with him which means four of the dots are in unknown locations.

“So, which one do we follow?” That was the question on everybody’s mind.

“We go to the one that is alone, with a faint pulse.” On the device, several feet away is a flickering dot as if there was some interference in picking up the heartbeat. It wasn’t stable.

“Damian, where are your animals?” Barbara asks typing away on her phone. She may not be at the bat-computer, but she can still manage with Wi-Fi and a portable device.  

Damian wasn’t sure where his animals are. He knows for a fact that Alfred the cat was in his room, Titus disappears to hang out with Ace every now and then. The rest of the animals are most likely outside in their miniature houses that he keeps at the manor for nights like these.  

“No time to argue, we got to move.” Tim was already ahead of the family following the path guided to him by the tracker.

The bat-family follow the strange signal until they reach a dead end. All the doors were shut, and the thunder was booming with no means to stop. They haven’t seen or heard from Marinette since they disbanded earlier that night. Soon, the faint pulsing signal grows stronger as they approach the final door. No one, aside from Alfred, could remember what was behind that door. It was a bedroom.

“Whoa” Tim yelps, looking down at the tracker. There are now twelve pulsating dots on the device. They all filter into the room. It was practically empty which put them all on edge. Marinette was somewhere in the manor and now there were in an empty room with no clues on where to start.

Using their flashlights, they scan every inch of the place and still found nothing. Alfred takes the device away from Tim who protested but when he realized that it was Alfred he calms down.

“I don’t think there is another person in the manor,” Cass states looking around the room. She was eyeing the large wardrobe. If her hunch is correct, then she knows where the newest pulsing signal is coming from and that makes her giddy.

“I concur with Miss Cain.” Alfred walks over to the second door that is in the room and opens it revealing a certain black Great Dane wagging his tail happily yet protectively. He barks but upon seeing his owner, he calms down. “It appears that one of the signals is Titus and with him being her it only means that Miss Marinette is in this room. Perhaps in the wardrobe.”

The second the word “wardrobe” escapes the butler’s lips, all the bat-bros rush over to the item. Damian was quick to open it and there she is. Marinette’s small enough to fit comfortably on the base and stay hidden had there been any clothes on the rack. In her arms is a small pup, probably the intruder that has been haunting them. The pup’s nails are long and need to be cut. Marinette was sleeping which made it easier for Damian to scoop her into his arms.

The pup wakes up and begins barking yelping up a storm causing Marinette to stir in Damian's arms. Her eyes flutter open and a yawn escapes her lips.

“Is it morning already?” She yawns once more rubbing her eyes. Damian shakes his head causing Marinette to pout and try to find comfort in Damian’s arms to fall back to sleep to, but the pup in her arms wasn’t having it. “Oh quiet, you.” Marinette laughs and tightens her hold on the pup.

“That doesn’t explain the strange pulsing signal?” Steph states looking over Alfred’s shoulder and once more a signal was faltering without a constant beat.

“That’s because I believe, Miss Marinette is currently with child.” Alfred places the device down for everyone to see. “We have the heartbeat tracker on pulsing signals that can be easily translated to a heartbeat. If Miss Marinette, is indeed with child, the interference to this signal is the pulsing from the fetus.”

Alfred pause for a second giving everyone to process the news. Damian’s exe. was broken as he stares at his wife with love and shock. The rest of the family, aside from Cass, was blinking away the shock. Five, four, three, two…one. Then they all break out in shouts of excitement.

“Oh my god, we’re going to be uncles!” Dick exclaims bouncing in place. He even wraps his arms around Damian, who was still frozen and gives him a side hug knowing full well that he can’t protest.

Jason looks like he was about to kill someone—more or less Damian for a matter of fact. Marinette was his sister in everything but blood. Yes, he’s excited for the incoming member of the family, but he doesn’t know what to do.

 Tim was trying to wrap the news around his head. He hadn’t had any coffee since before the movie night started and with the power being off, there’s no way for him to make his usual late-night cup of coffee.

“Will you shut up; I’m trying to sleep here,” Marinette growls bring the attention back to her. Damian did the only thing that came to mind, he places a kiss upon her lips. Marinette moans and she would have playfully hit him had her arms weren’t holding the pup.

“So, no one is going to question how a puppy got into the manor?” Steph asks pointing to the pup still in Marinette’s arms. She was tempted to coddle the pup and leave the room to return to her own and news come back to life in the morning.

“Titus’s doggy door, most like. I won’t know until I check all the cameras.” Barbara says wheeling herself over to the couple, “Congratulations Damian…I’m going to bed.”

“We are so talking about this in the morning,” Dick claims as he walks out the room pushing Jason and Tim along with him.

Soon it was just Marinette, Damian, and the dogs alone in the room. Damian had a few options to consider, stay the night in this room or walk through a series of halls to return to their own bedroom. It’s late, so he chooses the former. Placing Marinette on the bed was easy once the newly introduced pup jumps out of her arms and onto the bed.

He makes sure she’s comfortable before joining her. Titus curls at the foot of the bed barking at the pup to come to him to which the pup did. Damian pulls Marinette into his chest and whispers, “Thank you, Angel,” into her ear.

“You’re welcome, Demon.” Marinette murmurs back before going off to sleep.

Who would have thought that this is how his family would find out that Damian and Marinette were expecting? This would go down as the best accidental reveal in their family history.

Voltron Humans are Weird 6/?

The Paladins had once again won an intense battle. It had been on the planet Cygoth, which was home to a group of humanoids. The Cygi, as they were called, had skin in shades of pale pinks and purples and blues. Their heads were like those of bald humans, but with upside down ears and eyes like felines. Instead of five fingers and five toes, the Cygi had four fingers and six toes, to aid them in their strange environment, along with bug-like wings that hid under hard green and yellow shells.

Said environment was one with 'extreme weather conditions' and 'toxic' rain. The Cygi lived in caves that were on a large cliffside. Since the elements often got within the rocks and all the animals were terrestrial and highly territorial, the aliens would hang upside down and crawl across the ceilings like spiders. They also collected rare minerals that grew down to build their homes and helped them grow food in their strange way of living.

It was these minerals that the Galra wanted. Stronger than 98.97% of all other metals or rocks, they could be used to create impenetrable ships and armor. The Cygi had called Voltron to Cygoth to aid them in protecting their resources and freedom. After they had succeeded, and it became clear that the team only wanted to help, no reward necessary, the leader of the Cygi offered an alliance. New armor and some upgrades for the Paladins and Castle, an increased amount of trade for the aliens, and a plethora of allies for both because of their union.

The talks were boring, and the four younger Paladins found themselves quickly becoming inattentive. Lance got them excused and Pidge ran straight to the edge of the central cave, ignoring how the Cygi were suddenly watching them keenly. It was likely to avoid the Terrans getting attacked by the fauna or killed by the 'toxic' rain that was cascading down just outside. A device was pulled from the depths of the Green Paladin's armor to scan the substance pouring from the atmosphere, and they all peered over the girl's shoulder tensely.

The screen lit up in green.

"HECK YEAH!" Keith shouted, his voice echoing loudly against the stone walls. "Nontoxic!"

"C'mon, Paladudes!" Lance waved his hand at the others in a beckoning motion. "It's time to explore this world and turn Shiro's hair whiter than before!"

The kids dashed forward towards the more organic part of the planet's surface, but paused and turned at the sound of buzzing.

A large group of Cygi were heading straight for the humans, frantic expressions and furiously beating wings drawing the Paladins' attention. It seemed that the team's newest allies were more knowledgeable about their intentions, and were attempting to avoid what they assumed was a dangerous situation.

The teens were not about to let that happen.

"BREAK FOR IT!" Hunk screamed, and there was no way that Shiro and Allura didn't hear that. They only had a few minutes before they would be caught in their escape. The humans dashed for the entrance, and Keith was definitely gonna make it. Pidge wasn't, and Hunk was a coin toss, so Lance took action. The self-sacrificing idiot.

The Blue Paladin grabbed his smaller friend and threw her at his bro.

"CATCH!" The cook caught the child easily, still sprinting to freedom. But the action left Lance behind the herd and much closer to the Cygi. It became obvious how close when his feet left the ground.

"What the flippity floppity flapjack‽ WOAH!" The flying aliens were swift to bring the Terran over to the suspended platform where Shiro, Allura, and all the diplomats were staring down from. It was from there that the kids had originally climbed down the rungs of the strange ladder to get to the floor. "Ah, you lily-livered sons of witches! You snackers! Oh, tick-tack snick-snack frick-frack paddlywack! My father will hear about this, you barnacle-covered Caprisun knock-offs! I'll steal your kneecaps and eat your curtains! You moldy walnuts!" He continued spouting off insults as he was carried over to his leaders, smiling slightly at the look of exasperation on Shiro's face. His words stopped the moment his feet hit the mioxite platform, smile growing exponentially.

"Lance, what were you guys doing?" The older man didn't let Allura speak, taking over the conversation immediately.

"The rain isn't toxic for us, so we were gonna explore. I gotta join the others soon."

"No, you don't gotta."

"I do gotta."

"Why?"

"You want Keith and Pidge alone in unknown territory with just Hunk as their voice of reason?"

"You definitely gotta."

"Shiro, Lance, what is going on?" Allura finally managed to interject. The humans turned towards the Altean, both confused. Lance had just said that he and the others were going to explore Cygoth.

"What d'you mean, princess?"

"What code was Lance speaking?"

"Code? What co- oh." The Black Paladin's face lit up in realization. "She meant the curses. Lance, explain."

"I was cussing without swear words."

"What?"

"I was spouting profanities without ever using actual words that are considered profane. For instance." The boy faced his fellow Terran once more. "Let me strawberries and cream go before I rocky road your face, you useless paperclip."

"Where's that from?"

"Ice cream flavors with the classic inanimate objects with no function. From Tumblr."

"What is ice cream? Is it more... omnivore things?" Allura seemed to be scared she might have to hear more about the meat-eating habits of humans.

"Nah, don't worry, princess," Lance assured her. "Ice cream is a chilled treat back home. We found out that there's many animals we can safely farm for their milk. When done correctly, it doesn't harm the animals, and we can process the milk for consumption. Process the milk properly, and then you can get ice cream. It comes in many flavors."

"Such as?"

"Strawberries and cream, and rocky road, to name some."

"Are any of those poisonous?"

"I think lactose might be, which is in a good portion of milk, and some nuts are, and definitely chocolate. So, to animals, yeah, most ice cream is toxic, but not always enough to do more than a stomachache."

"Princess, I can take over explaining, but Lance has to go make sure none of the others get into trouble."

The Blue Paladin took that as his cue to leave, climbing down the ladder once more and bolting back to the entrance. In moments, he had disappeared from view, joining his fellow humans outside the caves. Shiro watched him go, internally wishing he could join them.

But they had once again caused a situation that needed explaining, and Lance was needed to prevent an actual disaster from happening, so Shiro had to do damage control solo this time. That's what he got for letting four teenagers kidnap him back into space.

If a human seems to be speaking in code, yet other humans seem to understand them, even on a basic level, ask if they are speaking in 'slang'. This is a Terran term that encompasses many variations of speaking. Much like the difference in linguistics between Blue and Green Zithians, humans will likely have very different slang depending on where they spent their time. A place called Tumbler often fosters a more complex version, whereas Insta Gram has a simpler code.

Humans might invent their own slang in order to packbond properly with one another. Two groups of Terrans hailing from the same locations may have entirely different lexicons due to the change that each team may make. Some individuals may even know more than two versions of slang, in order to establish better relations with their fellow humans. There is very little evidence of what requirements are needed to include learning more than one variation of slang. An example of this would best be shown by the following interaction:

Terran Blue, addressing Terran Yellow: Then he just yeeted it at me, as though I was gonna sit there like a soggy popsicle.

Terran Yellow, responding: That doesn't explain why you turned him into an ice cube.

Terran Green, addressing Terran Blue: "Blue", what was the 411 on those rocket launchers?

Terran Blue, responding: The main man blew a gasket. Didn't make it far, but managed to nab a couple of the suckers.

Terran Yellow, addressing Terran Green: You throw a glitter bomb down the chutes and I'll cop all the cookies.

Terran Green, responding: Do it and you'll lose your kneecaps.

In the above interaction, it was explained that Terran Blue and Terran Yellow were discussing an instance where an object was hurled towards Terran Blue's head. He dodged the object and used a weapon to freeze his opponent in a section of ice. Terran Green was inquiring about a mission and the weapons that were supposed to be gained if it succeeded. Terran Blue informed of the partial success they achieved, after which Terran Yellow warned Terran Green to not perform certain playful acts. Terran Green responded with a more intimidating warning.

However, as seen, there were many different instances of slang usage. All three of the humans used at least two versions, yet they all hold very different positions. Terran Green is a scientist, Terran Yellow is (assumed to be) a chef, and Terran Blue is (assumed to be) a diplomat. Their needs for their positions are greatly varied, leading to confusion as to the education of humans.

In all events of slang use, please proceed with great caution. A greater percentage of this subject is unknown than the previous logs. Refrain from attempting the replication of slang unless the code has been explained to you by a Terran. Humans have not shown much aggression yet, but they may do so if provoked on an emotional level.

Summary: (Made up) Investigating what's now become a museum, the remnants of John Wayne Gacy's home has dragged the crew for a twist. The killer clown and his victims shaking you to your core.

You and the Ghost Adventures crew were now in Illinois, your newest investigation already having you guys in for a shock. The name itself was insanely chilling, John Wayne Gacy. Better known as, the killer clown, of course. There was no paranormal investigation history to help because the Ghost Adventures crew were the first to not only be allowed to investigate but to be invited to do so. The interviews were just about wrapped up, and now you guys were just waiting for the lockdown.

A simple hang out in the hotel room with simple take out for dinner, because to be frank it was clear none of you could stomach much. "Considering Gacy had two alter egos, in the afterlife we could be dealing with something far more negative," Jay explained, the crew settled out in the small balcony of the shared hotel room. You hadn't quite touched your food much, something was extremely off about this investigation and it was off settling, especially for you. "What else did you find out today?" Aaron asked, before sipping loudly from his nearly empty drink.

A loud slurping sound following the question as to his straw hit against the ice, none of his drink left to be enjoyed. Normally, either of you would make a comment to joke about it, but none of you had it in you. Instead, you responded. "He admitted to having murdered over 33 men. Many were found in the house actually, few in the backyard and some in the crawl space." You shared. You had been helping Jay investigate his history while the others wrapped up the interviews earlier that day. "A couple bodies found in the Des Plaines River." Jay added as he collected his garbage into the fast-food bag it came in.

"Listen, guys..." Zak finally spoke up with a heavy sigh. He knew his crew quite well, after so much time working alongside each other, it was easy to spot they were all on edge already. "I know this is strange, and honestly a bit off settling...but it's also a huge opportunity for us. However, your safety will always be my priority." Zak continued as he glanced at his team, more so his family, as he spoke. "Seriously don't hesitate to communicate any feelings, thoughts, or concerns. It's okay to be afraid, it is." He reassured everyone.

That was the thing about Zak Bagans, he was human. Sure he made some bold decisions, seemingly fearless, but he was indeed human. He also had a big heart, one not many were lucky enough to see. Fortunately for you, being his girlfriend, you knew him quite well. Honestly, his heart might just be one, if not the, biggest reasons why you fell in love with him. You sent him a small smile as the rest of the crew mumbled some response. "Don't get soft on me man, we'll be fine. We always are." Aaron reassured the lead investigator.

As time passed, you and the others getting ready to leave the hotel, you couldn't help but feel your heart begin to pound even harder in your chest as you walked down the hall to the elevator. "You okay, y/n?" Zak asked far softer, as he walked alongside you. His hand resting on the small of your back as you both followed behind the rest of the crew. "You've been quiet today," he added, concern lacing his voice as he gazed down at you. It was no secret you were together, but you guys hardly showed much PDA when filming.

Just occasional teasing from Aaron, sometimes Billy, and from time to time you and Zak would investigate together. "I'm fine, just a little on edge. I don't know why it's bothering me so much." You admitted quietly, gazing up at your boyfriend, keeping the conversation quiet and intimate. When it came to feelings and emotions, the both of you preferred to keep those conversations private. Your friends didn't need to know everything after all. Zak nodded in understanding, pressing a soft kiss to your temple as you both entered the elevator.

The journey down to the ground floor was filled with some commentary, attempted jokes from Aaron, and Zak gently rubbing the small of your back in reassurance. A gesture you treasured greatly.

From the beginning, your presence was known. Not just yours, but everyone. Even when setting up the X cameras and other equipment, activity was quick to welcome the Ghost Adventures crew into the after-hours of their lockdown. Currently, Jay was in their nerve center, Aaron was doing some EVP work in the backyard, and you, Billy, and Zak were making some advances in Gacy's bedroom. It went without much need to say, you were on high alert and on edge after arriving at the location hours ago.

Zak was asking questions in hopes to communicate further with the spirit in the room using the spirit box, while Billy was using the Ovilus at the same time. "You don't need to stay here anymore, you're free to go. Why are you still here?" Zak questioned, moving his hand as he had been covering the spirit box to cover the white noise while he asked. Seconds later, no voices came through but Billy quickly reacted to the small device at hand.

"Woah, y/n come get this!" Billy exclaimed, as you quickly made your way to him, your camera focusing on the device that reads "stuck." As Billy and Zak raved about the discovery, the Ovilus soon came through with, "Crawl." And then again seconds later, "Space." Which left the three of you in shock. "It just said stuck crawl and space!" Billy exclaimed, the investigators a bit excited at the activity considering the spirit box hadn't brought many results. "Are you stuck in the crawl space?" Zak questioned, recalling the information you and Jay had shared back in the hotel.

In the next few minutes, there were no more responses. All activities having just stopped abruptly. "Y/n, why don't you go and check out the basement? Maybe like around the crawl space?" Zak suggested as Aaron came through on the Walkie Talkie. "Zak, come in." Aaron's voice was heard. "Yeah, Aaron what's up?" Zak responded with the device at hand. "Someone needs to come down here with me man.. it's just... it's different out here bro." Aaron admitted.

"Billy's heading down," Zak responded, making eye contact with both you and then Billy before nodding. "I'll stay here and see if I can get some more contact." He clarified. You both nodded and soon you and Billy were heading down the steps, before parting ways to your different destinations. "Good luck," you bidded, Billy doing the same before heading out. You sighed deeply, making your way into the basement with your heart pounding loudly within your chest. Your hand visibly shaking in your camera footage as you managed your way in the dark.

"Hey y/n, you good?" Jay asked, coming in through your walkie talkie, scaring you half to death. Hi! Well, I definitely understand where you’re coming from in terms of Fred. Some of his outbursts can kinda be a bit over the top for sure. While prior to the movie, I had a pretty solid ranking of where the characters stood from my personal favorite to least favorite (Fred being 5th pre-series) I’m not sure where they all stand now.

But I must confess that I have been wanting to make a post in regards to the idea of Fred not being smart. I just had a feeling some people probably feel this way and I totally get why. But to be fair, he’s not a genius or super scientifically intelligent compared to the others.

So anyway I hope this doesn’t come off as me trying to argue with you because that’s not my intention at all. I can see what you mean as to how Fred has been portrayed in the series thus far, and while he’s not my favorite character, I really want to get out all my examples that shows he’s actually not as dumb as he comes off at times.

Okay so for starters, ever since the movie, Fred has been the comic-relief character. He’s goofy, his ideas are classified as “not science”, he mixed up certain phrases for languages. And as we know, he’s just the mascot at SFIT and not majoring in anything. He’s a science enthusiast, but above all, he’s a comic book lover.

And not only is his love for comic books heavily shown more in the show, but it’s also his strong suit. He is the one main character out of the six where his smarts don’t stem from science, but from his knowledge of comics. And while this may not seem very impressive in comparison, it’s incredibly useful when they’re on missions. 

The first time we get to see Fred use his comic book knowledge in the show is in Issue 188. Now, I admit I was annoyed that what Fred found out was actually meant for Hiro’s secret identity situation rather than helping them defeat High Voltage. But what he did find out for Hiro was a useful piece of information for him to use. “People see what they want to see.” I admit this isn’t a great first example, but I felt that it was worth mentioning.

I’m going to get just a tad bit off topic as far as comic books go, but as someone who actually really enjoyed the episode Fred’s Bro-Tillion, I loved how Fred defeated Baron Von Steamer. Despite his fear of spiders kicking in due to the design of Steamer’s mecha-suit, the others were unable to fight and he used his knowledge of ballroom dancing (which he has just learned like a day beforehand) to his advantage.

In the beginning of Food Fight, we see that Krei gets temporarily paralyzed due to Momakase. She stole half of an anti-gravity device. The other half is still secure in his “other secret safe”. The team wants to know where that safe is, but it’s classified and Krei tells them they’ll never find it. But guess who immediately finds it?

“These days, the only reason people have globes is to open secret safes. I mean it’s pretty obvious.”

Fred was immediately able to discover Krei’s other secret safe solely based on how observant he was of his office!

The is a very small point, but at the end of Muirahara Woods when they’re trying to get Baymax back, they attempted to have Ned fall into a hole. And while he climbed out of the second hole, he fell into a third hole. The idea of having a third hole was Fred’s.

In Failure Mode, it starts with Fred, Hiro, Baymax and Honey Lemon staking out an art museum. The only reason they’re doing this in the first place is because Fred suspects something is going to happen. According to Fred, “Museum galas are like in the top three favorite super villain things to interrupt.” A minute after explaining this, the gala is under attack by Globby. Fred had him and most of the team stake out the museum on an educated guess that it would be interrupted by a villain and he was correct!

At first, I wasn’t going to bring up any moments from Aunt Cass Goes Out because there were a lot of moments where Fred doesn’t come off as the brightest and kinda does have some interesting dialogue. And while he was the cause of the Buddy Guard turning on them by placing the nerd gang’s sodas in a very bad spot, he also was the one to find a way to see where the Buddy Guard was when it disappeared. He used ketchup packets. And yes, that did get ketchup all over the place, but it got on the Buddy Guard which they were then able to hit and discover its glitch.

While it was definitely unintentional, how things went about in Mini-Max was well thought out. Fred is shown not to do well with missions on his own. He causes more harm than good without realizing, but Hiro designs Mini-Max to help watch Fred whose watching the city. It’s a really good dynamic. While Mini-Max is designed to keep Fred out of trouble, Fred sees him as a sidekick. And yeah, Fred definitely needs the extra help when on solo missions, but in the end he’s the one who saves Mini-Max when confusing the security system so greatly, they terminated themselves. Fred may have overthought through things a lot, but it’s because of that that he stopped the bots.

I’m going to keep this part brief, but I like that Fred learned from his dad in Steamer’s Revenge. He learned some of his dad’s classic moves and played the part of Boss Awesome pretty well. Steamer is pretty easy to fool when it comes to identities (I mean he did think Wasabi was Fred), but Fred definitely learned some good stuff here.

In The Bot Fighter, Fred comes up with the suggestion to go undercover to find out who’s responsible for making the bots that were part of a robbery.

He gets this idea from a Captain Fancy comic book. While he already has fake mustaches for everyone and thinks it’d be great for all of them to do this, it’s not quite the solution. However, Hiro says that it is a great idea; it’s just that he needs to be the only one doing the undercover work.

This is probably my favorite point to bring up. In Obake Yashiki, the team is trying to find stolen crates that Noodle Burger Boy had stolen earlier in the episode. Hiro discovers the location to be in a very tall building, but they don’t know which floor. Immediately after this, Fred asks if he sees any construction. After Baymax scans the building, he states that the 23rd floor is under construction. Fred then says that’s where he thinks Noodle Burger Boy is.

“Villains love exposed pipes, beams and plastic tarps.”

And Fred’s theory is proven right again!

Finally, I’m going to talk about Countdown to Catastrophe! Fred has come up with the “perfect plan” to catch Obake.

“Globby’s been trying to steal Krei’s energy amplifier. And Globby’s been working for Obake. If we set a trap for Globby making him think we have an energy amplifier, we can catch Globby. And make Globby lead us to Obake.”

He tells this plan to Gogo who admits that this is actually a good plan.

In order for this plan to get into action, Fred needed to have Krei agree to have a fake press conference, pretending he has a product that doesn’t exist. Naturally, Krei doesn’t agree to this idea at first. Both because Fred wants him to do this the next day and because he doesn’t want to be attacked. But luckily, Mini-Max reminds Krei that Globby stole his wallet which makes him agree to the plan.

Now, was this plan successful? No. No it wasn’t. Fred didn’t plan on other villains joining Globby in stealing the non-existent energy amplifier. Hiro also wasn’t present for this fight which didn’t help. But despite that, this plan Fred came up with was still a good idea at the time.

TL;DR - While Fred isn’t as brilliant as the other main characters, he’s still very intelligent in his own ways. Despite not always being portrayed that way and often given lines where he doesn’t seem to appear very smart, he’s very savvy due to his comic book knowledge.

Yup, having like three local friend circles that had relations to each other outside of myself, and only one of them being in the know is fun.

You can basically stop reading at this point, because from here on out is just gonna be a massive time rewind to.....jeez, fuck if I know when, my childhood? I promise there will be time skips, we don’t need that mess played at normal tempo. (Also some funny stories after the giant gap in the text, if you want to scroll for that).

Most of this story is actually located in college, but the only real indicator (aside from having a general dislike of dresses) was way back when I was in all of second grade--apparently I was so damn insulted I burned all these facts into my memory--and an older kid was brought into the classroom, gave us this cool sales pitch about do we want to learn to shoot a bow, go camping, build campfires, etc

and then was like “OH YEAH THIS IS THE BOY SCOUTS IT’S BOYS ONLY”

I was so hyped lol.

Wound up being in a mediocre girl scout troop later, and my brother obviously got directed into boy scouts. At which point I got to find out that their camping trips were mostly getting rained on and finding black windows and getting taught woodworking by a dude missing a chunk of finger.

So more suffering than child me would have expected, but they still got to build fires and go REAL camping and shoot bows and rifles and shit.

Meanwhile, in girl scouts, we went to this one set of cabins every year. We never stayed in the damn cabins, because someone would find A Bug in there, or a spider, and then someone ELSE would have the same issue, and no one wanted to be in a cabin alone let alone be the only one in the cabins at all, and we always wound up sleeping in the air conditioned lodge that was visible from the damn cabins.

Except the one year where we went to a different camp, stayed in the legendary caboose, and there was a bat sleeping on the outside of the window so no one wanted to sleep there except me.

My scout group was weak.

I miss the cookies, though.

Anyway, due to not being forced into gender-targeted toys and getting to play with whatever the fuck I wanted, I also have jack shit for anything resembling an early warning sign aside from the above.

Actually, scratch that, I was not really a fan of dresses. I mean, this was fair in general, since they were usually scratchy, didn’t fit my arms/shoulders right, were designs I had no say in, and everyone would get on my case if the dress might get even a LITTLE dirty. Had some skirts I liked in middle school, but even that was a mess of having to wear tights because my genes have never resulted in anything resembling a thigh gap.

And I was like, constantly trying to play with the guys in grade school. And they’d periodically get that “NYEHHHHHHH GUYS ONLYYYYYY” shit going on. That was never not infuriating tbh.

Flash forward to high school, still basically left to my own devices. Only indicator here was that I was just tickled fucking pink whenever I heard that I either passed at cons or was at least tossed in the “maybe.......?” zone.

Flash forward to college. I honestly don’t remember what set me off on thinking about it, but started eyeballing my gender with a microscope. Unfortunately I couldn’t apply a litmus test like sexuality, so there was a lot of “uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhfuck” going on.

Actually, I think part of it was that on the forum I hung out on, a lot of the old regulars had assumed I was a dude until a childhood friend had dropped a pronoun several times in succession & asserted its correctness, which then led to a discussion along the lines of “whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat”.

But yeah, started testing the waters.

Also tried going to a LGBT+ club like, once. With the gal I was either dating at the time or was about to be dating, my memory is shit tbh. “HEY SO HOW ABOUT WE ALL JUST COME OUT TO EACH OTHER, A BUNCH OF STRANGERS <33333333″ still freaks me out, honestly. I get why it’s generally done, but like, no thanks. But I was horrendously obvious in ducking about the gender question and she totally called me out on it later in private lol. Also got me my first binder, but I digress.

Anyway, basically spilled on “I’m.....probably..............? a dude...........? jsyk??????” to my immediate friends, which was met with a lot of “.....YEAH ACTUALLY THAT MAKES SENSE” and a “hang on I need a dictionary........ok I get it”

I think I was the least smooth part of anything resembling a coming-out just due to like, me not wanting to have to tell people to do things for me? It’s something I find extremely awkward, like I know it’s that horribly stereotypical dating thing of “what’s wrong, bby, what do I have to do” “I DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO TELL YOU WHAT TO DO” but.

And that’s an entire digression about how my relationship with my mother often included me saying a lot of shit I had to say convincingly, but didn’t mean at all, and probably led to me having fuckall faith in what people say, most especially when under a forced prompt. I could do an essay on that, but not here.

Which, admittedly, I’m gonna rewind here because I think it’s funny in hindsight, but it means the dictionary reaction went like “SO...........I’M.............TRANS?” “What?” [thinking this is pushback on the idea] [PANIC MODE] “UH” “Like, literally, what does that word mean, I've never heard it in my life.” “OH. WELL. Heh. Uh. That internal reaction I had was embarrassing then, oops.”

Anyway.

Then the collective action was, “well, have you picked a name what do you MEAN you haven’t picked a name, we can’t just run about calling you by your deadname after all that”

And I tossed some names out, that I’m not going to list, because they were just fucking awful. So I got interventioned and the method became throwing names at me until they stuck.

Adam? Nah I knew an Adam and I can’t unassociate with that

Noah? Violin teacher’s third kid was named Noah. Same issue with Gabriel and Caleb.

Benjamin? I fucking grew up with a Benjamin he would kill me.

you get the idea.

And those were like, actual reasonable rejections. At least half the time I was just like “I DON’T LIKE HOW IT SOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNDS.” Take, for example, Josh. I 1) knew one in high school and he was a piece of work and 2) I just, inexplicably, don’t like how the word sounds.

Which is part irony and part masochism that JoshUA stuck.

I mean, that name had pre-existing connotations for me. I had played..........a game.........in high school. And given that my options were pretty shafted to Stereotypical White Boy Names if I didn’t want to stick out like a sore thumb, some positive(?) pre-existing connotations were going to be needed.

Incidentally, I had a v. sweet trans girl offer me her deadname, which was a cool name, but just, like, didn’t fit me in particular so. She also picked her name by RNG tournament, with the top 10 baby names for her year being the competitors. Which was neat and worked well for her, but I know I would have just re-run the fucking tourney if I didn’t like the winner lol.

But anyway, continuing on to a less flowery story. I’ll add some blank lines so it’s skippable. No need to set off every other person with gender issues here.

Decided to come out to my family. Apparently time fuzzed down my memories of being devoured by mosquitos outside while my parents were trying to decipher that their kid was holding hands with a girl in the back of the van and that girl had been planned to sleep over that night, and despite the fact that booth teens wouldn’t be jumping to sex that fast nor had the equipment to make a kid between them....it was Reason For Concern like a straight couple sharing a bed.

I mean, my mom was convinced that anything touching the nether regions was SEX and PREMARITAL SEX was EVIL. But I digress.....again.

So. I tell them. And the reaction ranged from “well ok I mean you’ve always been weird” (thanks, bro) to “uh I guess my last name’s odds of getting inherited just doubled........?” to “HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME”

Yeah. That last one was word for word. Some stuff was thrown, lots of crying (”I CAN’T EVEN DO MY MAKEUP AND IT’S YOUR FAULT”)--both of which were not my doing, though I got shocked(?) into my own set of tears iirc.

I think I set a speed record for climbing back into the closet. Like, a week later, everyone was pretending it never happened. I sorta emotionally cut ties with my mom at that point--kept it civil, but Did Not Want to discuss my life or friends at all with her or in any way that would get back to her.

So obviously, no one in my family knows I go by Joshua. If they asked, I would tell them, but lo and behold, zero questions, they never brought it up again, etc. And I’ve been very careful about not letting that knowledge spread, not putting it on the internet in a way that connects back to my legal name, being primed at any point to pretend “Joshua” is a mutual friend and to not respond to that name if someone accidentally calls me by it.

Incidentally, during Yet Another Family Counseling that was at least performed at an individual level this time, my mom apparently told the counselor that she thought she handled that well. Last I checked, making the situation about yourself and doing the whole “woe is me, the mother, with a child like this” shpeal was not “well”.

And I mean the WHOLE shpeal. If you’ve ever had the misfortune to see the posts by parents of trans kids that wax soliloquy about losing their child and mourning their “death” (especially the ones that aren’t all “but I got a new kid!”) like, the ones especially cut from the same cloth that would be like “my child is autistic but ~I~ am the inspiration for waking up in the morning” like no, your kid is the inspiration for dealing with you.

And if anyone is wondering, this is basically the Midwest Stereotype for....LGBT, interracial dating, etc rejection imo. Seemingly ok with it, but NO WAIT HANG ON, NOT MY CHILD. Like, I legit had trans kids explained to me (albeit without terms for it) at a relatively young age by my mother and yet. “X exists but not in our good christian neighborhood” attitude. Ugh.

So where was I? Hmm, yes, funny Joshua stories. Ok I have like ONE story. One of my friends that was in the know finally got me to play Trails in the Sky. Now, this sucker has a chunk of text lead-in with a ~mysterious~ boy that young Estelle’s father has brought home, and the whole discussion skips his name, ending on “my name is....”. Then it time-skips to present day, finally casually dropping this dude’s name, which, obviously, is Joshua.

My friend did not tell me this.

No warning, nada. Only Estelle had really come up in conversation.

And then we collectively dragged another friend into the abyss with us, except he wasn’t in the know. We also had him streaming his playing sessions when our schedules coincided, which led to--because of a shitty accuracy stat--him yelling (as we did) “JOSHUA!” frequently in combat.

I debated on just responding “Yes?” randomly one day in the most casual closet-exit possible. Then procrastinated by deciding to just be out with it at the end of the first game since he’d also played twewy.

Some of you have probably started to eye my avatars with judgement in your hearts. That’s fair.

Anyway, we had forgotten about another character that practically had his name, so at least I had someone to share my weird feelings with.

And then, he started the second game, and I didn’t hold back on responding “yes?” every time “Joshua” was used as an interjection.

Also because of that one post about biblical names, I will respond to any use of “Jesus”.

It was like playing a video game, that dissociative haze that tells the body and mind everything is just a figment of the imagination… Except it wasn’t. Not this time.

This time it was real. This time the blood pumping through his veins, the sound of it in his ears, the shakiness of his fingers… It was all because his friend was a bloody mess in his living room.

Shane’s hands worked on auto-pilot, placing the first aid supplies back in his bathroom. His shoes tapping on the dark mahogany floor seemed so distant, the memory of a sound once familiar.

Ryan lay, now shirtless, across the couch. His face contorted in pain, hands clutching the couch cushions. Dark, syrupy blood had dried down the contour of his Adonis belt as fresher, redder blood trickled down the curves of his abs. The worst part of all, though, was just beneath his left set of ribs, a bright pink, muscly streak of skin was just gone, framed with clotted blood and torn flesh.

“S-Shane–”

“Don’t talk,” Shane demanded. His voice was bitter, it was betrayed and angry and confused. A part of him reasoned that he was being selfish, but… God dammit he hadn't wanted his hunch to be right!

Shane glanced at his open laptop, wiki-how articles on cleaning bullet wounds and tending to serious cuts still illuminating the screen. He picked up a cloth, it was damp with hydrogen-peroxide and smelled like a hospital.

“Gah! Shit!” Ryan hissed, a hand instinctively gripping Shane’s arm as the taller man pressed the rag against his skin. The other hand was curled around a black piece of material…

Shane knew it all too well. He knew his suspicions were dead on–maybe the wrong choice of words in this situation… or perhaps just the right ones. He knew the chills dragging down his back weren’t from the whistling wind but from some unexplainable gut feeling. A sense too strong to ignore.

Shane set the cloth down, trading it for a wet paper-towel and cleaning off the crimson stains.

Ryan writhed under his touch, agonized whimpers trailing off his tongue. He grit his teeth, turning his neck away as if to escape his friend’s touch.

Shane pulled back, tossing the used napkin into the nearby bin. He picked up a large piece of gauze and gently, tenderly, taped it into place. He moved to pull his hand away, but his movement stuttered.

Ryan was cover in exhausted shock-induced sweat, his cheeks flushed, and lips parted daintily. His eyes rested closed, hands limp at his sides.

Shane’s gaze went back to that damn black fabric. He hesitated, arm extended in midair, before placing a gentle hand atop Ryan’s. He waited, just a few seconds, just long enough to seem comforting before tearing it from his friend’s grasp, another item tumbling to the ground.

Ryan bolted upright, wincing at the sudden shift, “Shane, wait!”

“Dammit, Ryan!”

He was right. Of course, he was right. The black ski mask that he had worn when they killed Keith… It was still discolored from the blood.

Shane’s eyeline darted to the ground, a dark blue USB lay between the couch and the coffee table he was currently sitting atop. He looked back to Ryan, back to the drive, and back to Ryan, who, now also seemed aware of the USB’s presence.

“…Shane.” It was a warning. An unheeded warning, because despite Ryan’s closeness, Shane was well bodied.

The taller man swiped it from the ground, Ryan’s touch grazing the back of his hand.

“Is this what you’re killing for? Hm?” He pushed himself off the table, towering over his injured friend.

Ryan’s shoulders gave out, the rise and fall of his well-sculpted chest faltering. “What?” He seemed almost dejected. Almost betrayed.

“You know what! You’re fucking ‘Night, Night,’ aren’t you?” Shane glowered, pointing an accusatory finger at him. “You with all your, ‘we’re gonna be alright’ and ‘till death do us part’ bullshit, huh?”

Ryan’s brows knitted together and he backed himself into the indent of the couch.

“The question is why? What’s on here that you need so desperately?” Shane turned his attention to the laptop and slid the device in.

“Shane–I don’t fucking–I don’t know what’s on the drive!” He ran a hand through his hair, the gelled ends sticking up oddly. “I just! Shane, listen to me!” He barked.

The taller man stiffened, an expression that he only ever used to mask his emotions. It was the same look he’d use when he thought they were losing a court case. It was the same look from Keith’s house. The same look from when Ryan said Norris was on to them.

“Where... Where did you get these? Did you know? Were you in on it?”

Ryan shook his head, “Shane, I don’t–”

He turned the computer screen towards Ryan.

Staring back at the pair, in grainy black and white was—

“You piece of shit.” Ryan glowered.

Shane scoffed, placing a hand over his chest, “Excuse me?”

“You hypocritical piece of shit! You’re over here preaching to me about the blood on my hands when you’re working with the same crooks that got us into this mess?” Ryan threw his arms out, mockingly.

“You’ve fucking killed people! Plural! I wasn’t working with anyone! And besides, me breaking into a crime scene to make sure we hadn’t left anything behind doesn’t fucking compare to your heartlessness!” Shane glared, disdain dancing in his fiery, amber eyes.

Ryan’s shoulders went weak, his body collapsing in on himself, head shaking pitifully. “You… You… You went on your own? You went to… to… I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I just-I,” He covered his mouth with a gloved hand, to keep the sobs from escaping. “The mob made me, Shane. They made me do it, and now they’re trying to get me caught!”

The brunet’s eyes softened. They had been threatening Ryan, too? The snakes had both of them pinned to the wall? But what about this drive? Didn’t Ryan know that he was apart of their scheme?

“I didn’t want to! I didn’t! I– fuck. I… God, I didn’t mean to… I’ve fucked up, Shane! And now that I’ve refused to kill Fulmer the-they’re trying to get me caught!” His breathing became frantic as if just out of his reach, “They called the cops on me, Shane! They called the fucking police!”

Shane was frozen in place, he wanted to comfort his friend, but… Was this all an act? Was the mob trying to play him further? The paranoia clawed down his back, and he rolled his shoulders to fight the feeling.

Ryan blubbered incoherently, shaking his head, and gritting his teeth together. “I just…”

“Ry, hey! Hey…” The taller man gave in, sliding onto the couch with his partner, his friend, before pulling him into a tight embrace.

They had never been big on platonic physical contact. They would fist bump and high five but, save from that, they rarely touched.

Shane had always been a touchy person, he always liked to drape an arm over his friends’ shoulders, to hug, to place his hands on someone’s lower back while guiding them, to cuddle for warmth, etc. It was just the way he had been brought up.

Ryan, however, was the Mega Bro™ and that meant NO to all of Shane’s platonic advances. Of course, Shane never had a problem with that, he respected his friend's boundaries and if anything it helped him hide his feeling when they first met, but… It was odd to not be able to express something with more than a nod of the head or clap on the back.

So, when Shane pulled his weeping, shaking friend into his arms he was fully prepared to be pushed away, instead, he was pulled closer.

Ryan tugged at his shirt, burying his face into the creamy fabric. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” He mumbled, over and over on loop. “They… Shane, they have a video of you confessing to killing Keith.”

“What?” No. No, that couldn’t be! He would never do anything so rash, nothing that could tie him or, God forbid, Ryan to this whole mess.

“You were on the phone with Andrew, and he coerced it out of you…”

“Fuck…” A somber silence fell over the pair.

Ryan wiped the tears from his eyes, head still nestled into the crook of Shane’s neck.

Shane rubbed delicate circles over his back. “They’ve been blackmailing me with those photos,” Shane nodded towards the laptop, “the ones on the drive.”

Ryan choked on his spit, pushing himself to be at eye-level with Shane–or as eye-level as he could be. “W-what?”

Shane looked away, a pathetic smile on his lips, “I just wanted to make sure I, er, we hadn’t left anything behind but… Andrew called… He said he had these photos and if I wanted them hidden I had to, uh, to press people for information.” He risked a glance at Ryan, his eyes big and doe-like. Their glassiness sparkling in the dim lamplight. “They’d catch ‘em, keep ‘em in holding until I could meet at some abandoned location. It–the location, I mean–it’d change each time so I wouldn’t be able to say anything to the cops, or whoever.” He licked his lips anxiously, “Uh… And then I’d have to get information out of them…”

“Holy… Holy shit.” Ryan slid himself out of Shane’s grasp, not far but just enough to signify his disgust. “You-you tortured people?”

He didn’t answer, instead keeping his eyes on his hands.

“You really are a hypocritical piece of shit.”

“You killed 7 people, Ryan!” Shane glowered, pushing his own person away.

“… 8… now.” Ryan didn’t move, too scared to look at the expression on his best friend’s face. A grim glaze casting over his complexion.

“But they… they made you? …The mob?” Shane didn’t even have to ask, not when the regret and trauma were so blatantly written across Ryan’s face.

“Yes.” He nodded solemnly, “…You were just so scared Tuesday, and I couldn’t live knowing you had any uncertainty, especially if I had left something. So, I decided to make a deal–a dumbass deal, but a deal nonetheless–that if they tidied up the crime scene I’d… do something for them in return.”  Ryan pushed himself off the couch, a gasp escaping him, and a hand falling to his gash. “They really held me to it.”

“… You sent the mob to the sight? For me?”

Ryan shrugged, “For you, for us, it doesn’t matter! I didn’t want either of us getting caught!”

Shane smiled, the sincerity and joy contrasting heavily from this situation. He shook his head, chuckles floating from his lopsided grin.

Ryan raised a brow, “What?”

“We both… We both checked the crime scene? Both risked our asses for this fucking criminal empire because we decided to, in some way or another, check the god damn crime scene!” The last laugh far more contemptuous. A bitter irony.

Ryan collapsed back into the couch, “Shane, I’m so–”

“No. I should’ve trusted you… I should’ve… I should've trusted you when you said not to take Bennett’s fucking case!”

Ryan placed a hand on Shane’s knee, his eyes staring up at him adoringly and apologetically.

Shane frowned, taken aback by the affection.

The shorter man noticed the flash of surprise and moved to pull away, but Shane placed his hand atop Ryan’s, smiling.

“Shane,” Ryan spoke somberly, “We’re in this together.”

“Till death do us part, baby.”

Ryan hesitated, eyeing the small plastic device that was jammed into the USB port.

Wordlessly, Shane picked up the laptop and closed out of the photos. There was one other item on the device, a document.

Ryan reached his free hand out and clicked on the mouse.

A document with three lines popped up.

“It’s gibberish? Literal gibberish.” Shane mumbled.

“No… That-that can’t be,” Ryan took the laptop from Shane, his hands hot to the touch and the brunet shuddered involuntarily.

Ryan’s dark, almond eyes flickered across the screen. His lips were pursed, brow scrunched together, thoughtfully. “Ha, I… I can’t believe it. They really did want me to get killed over nothing!” His eyes were wide and frightened, desperate.

Shane’s heart beat a bit faster at that look, “No… Ry, they wanted you to get you killed with photos of me. The other one is probably supposed to look like a corrupted file.”

Ryan’s eyes, dilated in the dim light, flickered with fear, and something else Shane couldn’t quite identify. “Fuck.” He pushed the laptop aside, letting his elbows collapse onto his knees.

“They’d get two birds with one stone.” He placed a hand on the younger man’s bicep, running it up and down, mindlessly. “They’d make the whole thing look like you were trying to keep me out of trouble.”

Ryan’s mouth was held in a small ‘o,’ a sinking feeling nagging away in the pit of his stomach.

“But it’s okay now! You’re safe! You’re safe with me!”

He was right. Obviously, he was right, but something about the whole set up made even Shane think otherwise. They weren’t safe. Ryan wasn’t safe anymore. The very men who were using him had turned their knight into a pawn, which, quite frankly, was against the rules of chess.

Shane couldn’t stop staring at his friend, couldn’t stop thinking about how he hadn’t answered his calls, couldn’t stop thinking about what would’ve happened if he had stayed at the bar longer or if the gunman’s aim had been a little better.

A silent tear escaped Shane’s blinking eyes and he wiped it away with the back of his hand. This was SO STUPID! Everything was fine now! Everything was fine! Everything was fine! But it wasn’t! This wasn’t just about Ryan, the mob found him disposable, too! He was just as at risk. They were throwing around those photos and… Oh God, they could be sending them off to the cops at this moment!

“Shane?”

He didn’t respond, he just placed his forehead against Ryan’s, closing his eyes. He listened to the soft breaths escaping the shorter man, trying to ignore the anxiety sinking into his lungs.

Ryan didn’t dare move, his hand floating in midair unsure whether or not to touch Shane.

The taller inhaled deeply, taking in Ryan’s scent. Taking in his warm usual smell of teakwood and basil, but, now, it was tainted with gunpowder, soil, and blood. His hands drifted to Ryan’s thighs, tentative and unimposing. Just a way to steady his weight, or at least that’s what he told himself.

He could hear Ryan gasp faintly, his hand coming to rest on Shane’s shoulder.

“I’m so sorry for dragging you into this. I’m so sorry for worrying you. I’m so sorry for not being able to help.”

Ryan shook his head as much as the situation at hand would allow, “Shane, don’t apologize. You couldn’t have known this would happen.” He paused, “This all Satan’s fault, anyway.”

Shane chuckled, “This is beyond the devil, Ry.”

“Ha, no, no, I mean…” Ryan smiled halfheartedly, “The other mobster, the nameless one, it’s his fault.”

Shane pulled away, his eyes fixing on Ryan’s. “What did you say?”

“You know, the one in charge? Andrew’s superior?” His breaths were warm and gentle against Shane’s cheeks. Eyes watching for any sign of remembrance.

“You’ve spoken to him?”

Ryan pulled fully away, “You… haven’t?”

“No. I’ve been dealing strictly with Andrew.”

Ryan ran a hand across his mouth, “Okay… Okay…” He picked the laptop back up, eyes skimming the words over and over. It still was nonsensical. Still, just a jumble of symbols reading:

Shane knew that look, the glowing-eyed look Ryan held when he thought he cracked a code, “It’s not–”

“Exactly! Impossible!” Shane exclaimed.

“No, near impossible.” Ryan corrected, the corners of his mouth quirking up a bit, “What if we do it, Shane? What if we nail ‘em to the wall?”

He tried to hide it, he really did, but the vengeful smirk playing at his lips, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

Ryan hummed, caught up in his malicious thoughts, “If we crack this, if we play up this part of obedient servant…”

“Then we’ll have them like sitting ducks.” Shane nodded, “We just need to figure this out… But how?”

Ryan rubbed his hands together, eyes retracing the characters on the dim screen, “See that series,” he pointed to the );8¶8*, “I’ve seen it before.”

“Where?”

Ryan laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck, “When I… When I first tried to get in touch with the mob, to try and have them wipe down the house I may or may not have broken into Norris’ office and snooped through her files.”

“You did what?!” Shane gawked, wide-eyed.

“I know, I know, but I didn’t want you to be concerned with anything. So, I figured that was the fastest way I could get contacts.” Ryan smiled bashfully, guiltily.

“Okay… So, where did you see that?” He nodded at the word, if you could call it that.

“I read one of Keith’s statements,” Ryan toyed with his fingers as he spoke, “It had a list of potential involvements… That symbol was next to a crossed out name.”

“Do you think… that crossed out name could be this set of symbols?”

“It’s a start,” Ryan shrugged.

“And let’s say it is. Then what?” Shane inquired.

“Then we can backtrack. We can google what codes use these symbols for those letters. It’ll also help us figure out what eights and asterixis translate to.”

“You’re brilliant, Bergara,” Shane admitted, his eyes slipping from Ryan’s.

See, that was the thing with them. Shane was physically affectionate, all bite and no bark while Ryan, on the other hand, was all words. All compliments and loving comments. Shane never really commented on his affections for Ryan because… Well, if he did in any way tried to articulate how great he believed his friend to truly be, it would fall out in sarcastic tones and snide remarks.

But here, here in the dim light of his living room, his friend and business partner badly wounded, the two of them trying to escape the powers that held their lives on a string… Here he felt vulnerable in every sense of the word, and he wanted to be honest.

Ryan blushed, a deep rosy shade, his eyes danced with disbelief, and… Was he getting closer?

Shane’s breath caught in his throat and his heart drummed, for the first time in what seemed like forever, out of something other than fear. Shane’s eyes flickered over the dewiness of Ryan’s skin, the soft shadow of stubble across his chin, the warm almost purple tones in his deep mocha eyes. He inched closer. His fingers crawled forward cautiously, his index finger brushing against the shorter’s knee.

Ryan batted his eyes, slowly, his movements languid.

Shane could almost feel Ryan’s breath on him again, could almost inhale his intoxicating scent, could almost–

Three heavy knocks rang out from the front door.

Both men turned, silently, towards the sound, their contact now protective, hands tightening as if to guard the other from harm.

I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though. Should the warranty be covering these fees or was this an extra that I got talked into? Because if the warranty covers the rental they aren't making anything. My understanding is it could be better because I am covered under their insurance if I have an accident and it wouldn't come off my own cars deductible? I mean, I guess he's ok. He's from a big name agency. He seems to understand Millennials, or whatever. But something is just off.

Well, you've heard it said here before that UX (User Experience) is like playing bass guitar: easy to do poorly, and really hard to do well. Here are some signs he may be selling you UX snake oil.

1. He asks you if you "like" the new design direction.

He's so polite! But this is the wrong question. You don't need to like the design. The design needs to further a set of principles that we agree will add value for our users and achieve our business objectives. Liking it has nothing to do with it. 3. He gets really defensive about his work.

A good UX person makes his or her money in the design process, not the design delivery. This means working iteratively with the team to scrap what doesn't work and improve, quickly. But this guy is already getting super defensive about this comp he's showing us, and we're only five minutes into this friggin' meeting. UX people should absolutely push back on clients to help make the work better -- that's what we're getting paid for -- but it's a warning sign if every discussion turns into an ego feud. This guy kept telling us at lunch how he only reads real Americana like O'Connor and Faulkner, but I guess he missed the advice to "kill your darlings."

4. He legitimately seems to think that he's designing for someone just like him.

Wait, what? This dude's world-view is somewhat myopic. He keeps talking about how this will look killer on retina devices, but we know from the research that most of our users are older generation who may still use flip phones. (Is that embarrassing to admit?) We could see if this guy's boss has a broader perspective, but he's actually just like this guy, only ten years in the future. Probably too much to ask given that only 3% of creative directors are female, despite the fact that 73% of consumer purchasing decisions are made by women, $20 trillion of the world’s annual spending. I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason for that disparity that we just don't understand because we're not creatives. Humm.

5. He wears a scarf to business meetings that are clearly taking place indoors.

Just throwing this one out there since we're all thinking it. What data informed your design decision to wear that scarf? Yes, it's October, but it's still 80 degrees outside. And furthermore, this conference room is definitely located on the interior of the building. Now, I can much better understand my female co-worker's decision to wear a scarf, as she is legitimately always freezing, since, among all the other shit women still have to deal with in the workplace, air conditioning standards are based on male metabolism. Oh boy here we go. Nope, that's not a thing. The layout may be better with more white-space and fewer words and visuals, but it's not a good design just because you think it looks better. Removing content for the sake of your design aesthetic is a terrible principle.

This guy really needs to review all the research coming out on content density. It confirms what the rest of us have been thinking for years now, that the move toward large-format, poster-style layouts has come at a cost, namely less information delivered to the end-user per second invested. You know this from all those websites that drive you nuts when you have to scroll for thirteen minutes to find half as many words. Oh shit, this guy designed those sites too, didn't he. Well that just figures.

7. He keeps using words like "cultural zeitgeist" or some garbage.

Oh really, this design of yours with three boxes and a stock photo taps into the Millennial cultural zeitgeist? What the actual f*ck, dude. We're designing websites and applications here, not 19th century German philosophical treatises. Who do you think you are anyway, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel? Well do you know the one thing he was bad at? Designing websites. He didn't even have an iPhone. Yes, we understand that any good UX strategy must take into account the larger brand vision and where it fits into culture and the universe. Vision is important. But the reality is the rest of us have to spend the next four to six months actually building this thing. So let's please focus at least a little bit on tangible goals, not impressive sounding phrases.

8. He complains the design would have been better if you had just let him use Photoshop / InVision / etc.

Would it have? You will deliver the design in whichever format the client tells you to deliver the design. Do you have any idea how much shit I've had to design in PowerPoint? While it's convenient to pretend everyone lives in an all-Mac, pixel perfect universe, the reality is 90% of US corporations still run on Windows (48% of them on [gasp] Windows 7!) It is your job as a consultant to ensure that your work can live on once you pass it over to the business team. That's not to say you should let technology limit you. By all means, concept in the tool you're most comfortable with or is most appropriate to the design challenge. But when you get ready to hand it off, it had better be a file the client can, you know, open.

9. He says "I'm not a writer."

Well, that's decidedly not encouraging. We're not claiming that everyone needs to be a professional copywriter for a living, but designers should be able to write and writers should be able to design, or at the absolute least have a healthy appreciation for it. Even if it's something as basic as writing an email to help clarify a design choice, designers need to be able to write. Please don't say "I'm an art director so I let someone else worry about the content." We live in a content-first world, bro. You need to start taking yourself seriously as a writer. Research, write blog posts, whatever. It will make your designs better. Steve Jobs himself said that the future of design lives at the intersection of liberal arts and technology. Oh, you have his biography on your bedside table? No shit.

10. He spends more time talking than listening.

He likes to talk, that's for sure. Actually he won't stop talking. But he really hasn't asked you all that many clarifying questions, nor does he really seem to care about your ideas. Granted, he looks in the general direction of your mouth while you're speaking, which is nice, but then he just says what he was going to say anyway. We understand that his time is super-valuable and all, but it would be nice if he at least made a small effort to treat his clients differently than, you know, his Tinder dates.

11. He tells you that you really need to be more like Snapchat, Facebook or Google.

No, you don't. This is not the best use of your time. Your homepage should not just be a single search box because Google does it and everyone loves Google. That small, prolific handful of tech companies is entirely in a separate category. While you should absolutely consider tactical matters related to these sites (e.g. SEO strategy for Google, social strategy for Facebook), and perhaps broader research on the effects these sites have on user expectations overall, it's a sign of design immaturity if someone is lecturing you on how sweet Pinterest is. You're much better served learning from leaders in your industry who have already taken lumps designing for your specific audience.

Of course stopping these guys was a piece of cake to the turtles, but Raph had received a blow to his arm when one of the thugs had picked up a wooden bat they had seen poking out of a dumpster within the alley. Normally this wouldn’t do any damage to any of the turtles, but Raph had injured his arm a few months back when fighting a Foot soldier. While dodging a punch, Raph had slipped and used his arms and legs to stop himself from falling all the way to the ground by pressing them against the walls of the alley as he slid down the wall. In doing so, he sprained part of the bone within his left arm, and of course this arm is where he was hit tonight.

Luckily, Donnie didn’t think the injury seemed too serious. He had been working on a medical wing located in an open area behind where the lair was, but since it was still incomplete, he just used his lab for check-ups and for handling any and all wounds.

The four brothers had entered the lair from an entrance on the far left corner of the room. Leo walked straight ahead and then made a left as he went up the stairs next to the entrance that led up to his bedroom. Mikey made his way to the far right of the room where an opening lead to his bedroom. Raph headed straight to the fridge along the wall of where they had just entered. “I’ll be over in a sec Don, just let me get an ice pack real quick.” “Alright bro, I’ll get things set up.” Donnie headed over towards the mid-right side of the room where two sets of about twenty computer monitors each were facing each other. In the middle of the set was an entry way into his lab. He had all types of devices and chemicals and who knew what else in there. Donnie went through one cabinet and got out some pain meds he could give Raph so that his arm didn’t hurt as much, and then got out his hand-held x-ray device so that he could check his brothers arm. He assumed that the hit shouldn’t have done too much damage at this point since Raph’s arm was mostly healed, that and you needed to be ridiculously strong in order to hurt Raph in general. Raph then walked into the lab. Donnie pulled a wheelie stool over and had his brother sit down. He first gave Raph the meds, and then he used the x-ray to check on the bone. Everything still looked good to him, so the hit didn’t do any real damage besides for just making Raphs arm feel sore. Donnie smiled at his older brother. “Alright, looks like you’re good to go. Just try to take it easy, okay? If you must exercise or whatever, just don’t do anything that starts to feel uncomfortable.” “Alright, alright I gotcha. Can I go now?” “Yea you’re good, see you in the morning.” “Yea, night bro. And thanks for looking out” Raph said as he pat his brother’s shoulder. As Raph left the room, Donnie reached over toward the counter, aiming to pick up the flash drive with all their medical information on it so he could update it about what happened to his brother’s arm. He turned around after he felt nothing but empty space. He was beginning to worry. He ran out of his room and straight across the lair to one of the exits next to the arcade. Once he exited the lair he then made a right and headed for the med wing. Maybe he had left it in here for some reason….that he couldn’t think of….at all really. Still, nothing. He ran back into the lair towards Leo’s room. He then started banging on the bedroom door. “Leo! LEO! WE HAVE A PROBLEM!” Leo slowly opened the door, pinching the bridge of his nose in annoyance. “Donnie, it’s about 3 in the morning, what are you freaking out about this time?” “Leo, the flash drive with all our medical records is gone!” “…And?” Leo was confused as to what the heck that was supposed to mean, and why it meant his brother was screaming his head off. “Leo, you don’t understand.
