~-~-~
He'd taken a nap after his meal. Though now awake, Jackie continued working on combing through his hair. Not long after he started, he noted that the door remained cracked open, and briefly wondered as he untangled an especially stubborn knot, if that was just because of the cat. He honestly wouldn't be surprised. Finally, he managed to finish combing his hair out. Jackie cradled his right arm. It was aching from the repetitive movements.
“Your arm okay?” Jackie jerked his attention to the door to see Magnificent. When Jackie didn't respond right away, Magnificent spoke again. “Sorry, should have knocked.” Then promptly knocked on the door frame. “Your arm okay?” he repeated his question.
Jackie snorted in response. Then, as he looked down to his arm, said, “It's just sore.” Magnificent stepped into the room. Jackie shot a glance over at him for a second. Then picked up the tray with his left hand and held it out to him. He knew the routine by this point. Magnificent gave him a quick smile in thanks as he took the tray. He was almost to the door when Jackie decided to speak up. “I was thinking I'd take a shower today.”
Magnificent paused. “You think that's a good idea?” he asked, then looked back at him. “With your injuries still healing.”
“I...” Jackie sighed as he recalled Henrik telling him to take it easy. “I don't know. I just want to clean myself up.”
He watched Jackie for a moment. Then shrugged and turned away. “Just don't injure yourself. Washcloth and towels are in the next door over,” he told him as he headed out the door.
Great. Now he was second guessing his shower plans. Maybe... maybe he was right. Both of them. Maybe he should put off taking an actual shower. He still wanted to but... maybe just hot water and a washcloth should work for now. Jackie mulled over it a bit as he turned to look outside. Give his arm a little more time to rest.
Eventually Jackie got up and headed to the door. He paused, half-expecting there to be a barrier as he left the room. There wasn't. Opening the first door he came to, confirmed what Magnificent told him. After choosing a red washcloth, Jackie hesitated when grabbing a towel. Should he just get one of the small hand towels since he wasn't taking a shower? Or should he still get one of the full towels since he'll probably take a shower in a couple days? Jackie glanced down the hall, hoping he wasn't being judged for his indecisiveness. No one was watching; not even the cat. Turning back to the towel closet, he took a second longer before grabbing the full-sized black towel and shut the door.
Stepping into the bathroom, Jackie shut and locked the door. Then wondered if Magnificent would be able to still come in using his magic. Though he doubted he actually would, even if he could. He looked at the mirror. His heart pounded so hard he could physically feel it as he reached up to remove his mask. Its been days since the last time he hadn't worn it. And, considering where he was, he was a little nervous to be without it. But it was also a relief to be able to take it off for even a little while.
Jackie turned on the faucet and, after leaning forward far enough that he was over the sink, splashed some water in his face. He turned the hot water up a little then looked around for the soap. There was some body wash in the tub but no bar of soap. “Well, hope he doesn't mind.” After squeezing some of the body wash onto the wet washcloth, Jackie proceeded to wash his face. He used mostly his left hand since certain motions with his right still hurt.
He paused when he was almost done and eyed the door with caution, and a little anxiety, when he thought he heard something. Could have been the cat. Or Magnificent. Probably his imagination. Jackie finished wiping the suds from his face with the hot cloth before rinsing the cloth and hanging it over the faucet head. It started to drip the excess water into the sink. He did a quick drying of his hands and face before folding the towel and setting it aside. Feeling refreshed, he was a little discouraged having to put his mask back on. But there was no way he was leaving this room without it back on his face. So, reluctantly, he retied the mask over his eyes before he left the room.
It wasn't long after he settled himself back into bed that Magnificent came back to the room. Jackie was curious, and a little confused by the man's appearance. It's unusual for him to come in other then for meals. Instinctively he brought up his guard as Magnificent walked right up to the bed. “Here.” Magnificent stated as he held out a book.
Jackie blinked as he shifted his attention down to the book being held out to him. A little hesitant he accepted it. “What's this?” he asked as he glanced up at him.
“Entertainment.” Their eyes met for just a second before Jackie looked down at the book in his hands. “You said you wanted something to do. To pass the time.”
“Oh right. Thank you.” He didn't want to turn down, or come off as unappreciative, for the offer of entertainment. What if this was the only time he would offer something? He'd be stuck with nothing.
Magnificent turned away but didn't leave. Instead he spoke up. “I.. haven't read it yet. Let me know what you think.” Jackie looked up as he left. Was he...? Was he trying to connect with him? Turning his attention back to the book in his hands he looked it over. The cover had five guys, fantasy warriors from the look of it, four who looked on the older side while the fifth looked maybe half their age. The book looked on the thicker side. He flipped it open to the end. 492 pages. That could take awhile. Maybe that was why he gave it to him. Jackie checked the back to read the synopsis. Huh. Was this what Magnificent thought he would like? Jackie wondered as he looked at the cover again. Well, he might not be wrong. Jackie was curious enough to find out as he opened it to the first page.
He just got to the last page of the first chapter when he spotted Magi walking in. Pausing his reading Jackie watched as the cat sat in the middle of the room and stared at him. “Hi there.” Magi let out a little meow as he got up and walked over hopping up on the bed. He kneeded for a moment before laying down against his leg purring softly. Jackie turned his attention back to the book.
Jackie made it almost to the end of chapter six before he felt himself struggle to keep focused. His eyes were starting to droop. He blinked a few times trying to wake them up and tried again. When he made it to the next page he let out a yawn. How long was this chapter? Flipping the page, he realized he was almost done. He can make it. He can, he just needed to... rest his head back against the headboard with his eyes closed. The chapter was almost done. It was just two more pages. He just needed to focus. Let his eyes rest a moment, not fall asleep, and finish it. With a deep breath, Jackie shifted his position slightly as he straightened up. Magi was sleeping on the bed. He'd been so focused on the book that he'd forgotten the cat had come in. So far it good; even though not much has happened yet, despite being fifty pages in. Looking down at page fifty-one he murmured, “Okay.” He was going to finish this.

Idea. Villain x hero (enemies to lovers, naturally) where the villain gets amnesia of some variety and the hero takes care of them. The villain eventually gets their memories back but instead of "aha actually I'm evil again and hate you" it's a bittersweet moment where the hero comes home, sees the villain frozen stuff and staring at them, crying and just whispers, "how could I have ever hurt you". Antihero mayhaps

Yayyy little semi-references for my Jackie and Marvin designs!
Jackie's an ambulatory cane user, it's for the disorder POTS rather than a pain-based thing so it depends on the day if he needs it. He also made all of the patches on his jacket himself! King of DIY. 👏 Jackie is transmasc, post bottom and top surgery, and he's very happy in his body as of now.
And Marvin! Marvin really loves tattoos, as you can see. They have magic based in control of light waves! They can solidify light to create orbs or weapons. Marvin is transfem, genderfluid, and uses they/she pronouns. She binds back her chest with binding tape sometimes on days where they feel more masculine. Marvin gets acrylics that look like big cat claws, they are the ultimate cat lover.

@whumpril Day 18: Broken Glass
“Why do I think of a little birdie hitting head first into the sliding glass door?” Henrik tutted as he adjusted his magnifying glass over Jackieboy’s shoulder. Finding the right angle wasn’t easy when Jackie shifted to heave an exasperated sigh, then a hiss as the fragments of glass in his skin shifted with him.
“I would’ve opened the window before I jumped if I had time, trust me. I wasn’t planning to spend the whole afternoon on your table.”
“Ah, but quality time with me is one of your favorite things. Unbroken glasses with something strong after this, yes? Preference?”
“Maybe that dark honey whiskey we had after—agh!” Jackie’s superhuman grip tore the exam table’s padding and his vision went spotty when Henrik took advantage of his distraction and pried the largest shard out. “Hhh…T-That was dirty.”
“…Key lime pie with your whiskey?” Henrik offered, contrite. “My treat.”

Heros & Villains chapter 8 word count: 1,200
~-~-~
It was the middle of the night when Jackie woke up with the intense need to use the bathroom. When he moved to get up he felt the cat laying next to him stir. He blinked, sleep dissipating enough to remember Magi staying to sleep with him. Jackie heard Magi jump down from the bed. He faintly saw the cat slip through the slightly open door as his eyes started to adjust to the dark room. With help from the natural light from the window, he tiredly got up and headed to the bathroom before trudging back to bed.
The bird chatter woke him again. “Bad alarm clock...” Jackie muttered as he rolled to his left side, turning his back to the window. Then immediately shifted his position as a pain came to his left leg. He tried to will the pain to dull down. And, after taking a few breathes, it did start to lessen.
Jackie laid there, eyes to the ceiling, trying to decide what time it was. Birds usually started chirping not long after sunrise, right? So, if that was the case, then it could be anywhere between seven and nine. No eight. Nine felt too late for the birds. Jackie let out a snort. Who was he to decide the birds' schedule. But... he wasn't far off. He didn't hear them much in the afternoon. And if he remembered right they talked the most in the early morning.
His thoughts went to the day before. He turned his head slightly to the door. It was still cracked open. Magnificent probably spoils that cat rotten. Lets him get away with everything. An amused smile comes to his lips at the thought. Though his smile slipped as he pushed himself up into a more seated position and grabbed his water bottle. He thought for a moment on what Magnificent could possibly bring him for breakfast today. Wonders if Henrik will be by today, or if he'll be too busy with work. Wonders what new thing will happen today. Or if it will be bland with lots of naps.
Well, there will be one new thing. He checks his water supply then gets out of bed taking the bottle with him. But should he take the shower now or wait till later? After breakfast maybe? As he's leaving the bathroom he hears the shrill whistle of the kettle. Sounds like Magnificent is awake. So, breakfast sometime soon? Honestly, Jackie was more curious about what breakfast was going to be than when.
He was halfway across the bedroom when he remembered that Magnificent said he could dig through the bathroom for essentials. Jackie paused and mulled over it for a moment as he looked back to the bathroom. Decidedly, he left the water bottle on the bed and reentered the room to look around. It didn't take long to find what he needed since there was only one little drawer and the medicine cabinet. Everything that was in the drawer looked like it was extra. A brush, a few combs, a couple toothbrushes in their packages, a travel size tube of toothpaste, and a packet of hair ties. And is that deodorant in the back of the drawer? Jackie glanced to the counter-top. All of Magnificent's things were nestled in the back corner. He turned back to the open drawer and found himself hesitating before picking up one of the combs and inspecting it. It didn't look used.
As he set the comb on the counter, he felt a little more confident in his actions. He selected a toothbrush and tore open the package before removing the toothpaste. After twisting the cap off, he checked it. It didn't look used either. Jackie then proceeded to brush his teeth. He could feel a twinge in his muscles as he did. A soreness. But when he was done, there was a feeling of relief. A level of stress lifted off of him. The feeling didn't diminish much as he left the toothbrush and toothpaste on the opposite side of the sink and headed back to the bedroom with the comb. He could work through his hair when his arm had rested a bit.
When Magnificent came in with the usual tray, Jackie was working through his hair with the comb. Jackie set the comb down next to him on the bed. He'd gotten almost half of his hair done. Magnificent eyed him for a moment before walking over. “I see you found my excess combs.”
“Yep.” The first thing Jackie saw on the tray was a bowl. He wondered for a second what was in it. “I also helped myself to one of the toothbrushes.”
Magnificent didn't really respond to that as he just passed the tray over. The first thing Jackie noticed was the pancakes. There was a small bowl with syrup. In the bigger bowl, the one he noticed earlier, were apple slices and grapes. Jackie immediately plucked out one of the grapes and stuck it in his mouth. “Mm. Perfect grapes.” Then he glanced up at Magnificent, a little embarrassed. The man watched him with a small amused smile.
“I'm glad you like them,” he stated before taking a step back. For a moment Jackie thought he was going to leave like last time. But when he lingered, Jackie found himself a little relieved. He picked up one of the apple slices. “... Are these honeycrisp?”
“Yes?” Jackie stared at him. Magnificent shifted his position. Finally, he told him, “I have an apple tree.” Then added, “In my backyard.”
Jackie blinked. Magnificent seems uncomfortable. That... wasn't his intention. “That's cool. Lifetime supply of apples.” He paused as he tried to gauge Magnificent's reaction. It didn't change much. “Did you grow the grapes too?” Jackie turned his attention back to the tray in front of him, hoping that would lighten the situation. He popped another grape in his mouth before picking up his fork.
“... No.” There was silence for a moment and Jackie glanced over in his peripheral. “No, but I had thought about it.”
“Do you have a whole garden? Or just a lonely apple tree?” Jackie asked before sticking a forkful of pancake in his mouth.
There was a slight pause. “I didn't peg you as someone interested in gardening.”
Jackie looked over to see Magnificent had turned his attention back to him. “I could say the same about you.” Amusement evident on Jackie's face.
That amused little smile returned to Magnificent's lips. “Touché.” He turned towards the door then paused before taking a couple steps before crouching down. Jackie watched, confused for a moment until he saw Magi step in the room. Magi lifted his front paws and rested them up on the mans chest. Magnificent lifted him up in his arms and started out of the room as Magi bumped his little head against the side of his and watched Jackie. “Enjoy your breakfast,” Magnificent told him as he left. Jackie couldn't help the smile that came to his lips. Yeah, he definitely spoils that cat.
