“K̛ǹoc̷k̀ knóc̕k…Is ͏a͝ny͝one͠ home?” Anti cooed gleefully, scraping his blade against the doorframe. It set Jackie’s teeth edge to edge in his bruised, throbbing jaw.
“Stay behind me.” He propped himself against the wall, blinking spots from his vision. “We’ll stand our ground here.”
“We have no ground,” Marvin grit out, burnt hands cradled in his lap. “We’re cornered, you can barely stand, and my magic’s on fumes. We need to go! Schneep, c’mon, tell him…Schneep?”
Henrik didn’t respond, didn’t even seem to remember the others were there. He was rooted to the spot, bloodshot eyes fixed on the static seeping under the door. Jackie could hear his heart rate rocketing by the second, breaths shallow and sharp with terror. He couldn’t do this, he couldn’t be here, not with him.
“Okay. Okay, look for an exit, Marv, get him out of here. I’ll try to buy you some time.”
