Just something about Persona 3 Reload that makes us, brazilian gamers, very happy

We, the owners of this blog, are brazilian. We speak english, so we never had any problems playing Persona. But of course, we care a lot about our country receiving attention from game companies. And unfortunately Atlus never seemed to care about Brazil in this aspect.

Until now.

Persona 3 Reload was released in brazilian portuguese, and we were very hyped for it. And let me tell you, not only they translated it, but it's an AMAZING translation! Like, one of the best I've ever seen in the gaming industry. The team responsible for it definitely was very careful in choosing the best terms possible, so they inserted lots of brazilian slangs and jokes that we see and go like "HOLY SHIT, CAN'T BELIEVE THEY DID IT"

As an example, I bring this one Yukari voiceline: in the original, soon after Ikutsuki makes the first of his lame jokes, she says something like "you'll get used to his lame jokes". But then, in brazilian portuguese, she says "você se acostuma com as piadas de tiozão". "Piadas de tiozão" translates to "big uncle jokes" in english, it's a brazilian slang that is sorta like dad jokes in english, the kind of jokes that your 40+ years old uncle usually does at lunch table after some beers. Precisely Ikutsuki's energy.

Aside from that, there are many expressions and slangs like "eita", "vixe", "bora", "picar a mula", many expressions that we use regularly on our dialogues and are inserted in the game in a very cool way, making us smile everytime we see it.

So, yes. Thank you so much for this, Atlus. We're very happy.

(also, Persona 5 Tactica will receive a translation patch in brazilian portuguese as well, I'm considering beating the game a third time just to check the translation)

Dia dos Namorados

Summary: Não obstante, todos estavam bastante animados com exceção de um certo albino marionetista. Ele não suportava aquela data.

Notes: Apenas uma ideia que surgiu enquanto eu olhava algumas fan arts. Era pra esta fanfic ter sido postada no dia 14 de fevereiro porque como o próprio título aponta, seria o Dia dos Namorados. Eu sei que atrasei um tantinho, mas para todos os efeitos, vamos fingir que essa história foi postada no dia 14/02, sim?

Bom, sem mais delongas, boa leitura!

O clima não podia ser mais romântico na Easton. Com a chegada do Dia dos Namorados, todos os jovens estudantes estavam com os hormônios à flor da pele. Enquanto alguns criavam a coragem dentro de si para se declararem, outros ficavam na expectativa de terem seus sentimentos correspondidos. Não obstante, todos estavam bastante animados, com exceção de um certo albino marionetista. Ele não suportava aquela data.

Todo ano era a mesma coisa: tornava a se recordar do final trágico que teve sua mãe, o dia em que teve sua vida covardemente tirada pelas mãos de um necessitado faminto.

- No fim das contas eu também sou um fraco, afinal não pude salvar você... – Suspirou o albino em desolação ao encarar a pequena boneca que segurava em seus braços. Tudo o que mais desejava no momento era que o fatídico dia terminasse tão rápido quanto sua chegada.

- Seria incômodo eu te acompanhar em meio à melancolia? – Ao ouvir a pergunta, teve seu fluxo de pensamentos interrompido e virou-se para encarar o dono da voz.

Abyss esbanjava um sorriso terno em seu rosto enquanto aguardava a resposta de Abel à sua indagação, que não tardou a vir. A partir de um leve aceno do albino, o azulado teve sua confirmação e foi se aproximando timidamente do marionetista. Suas mãos pareciam esconder algo em suas costas.

- Sei bem como é. Certos acontecimentos nos fazem questionar a razão de nossa existência e o nosso valor como humanos. Será que vale à pena continuar vivendo? Eu honestamente acreditava que não até ter conhecido você...

Abel se sobressaltou com essa confissão. Sempre considerara o que fizera pelos integrantes do Magia Lupus o mínimo. Então, a sinceridade de Abyss aquecera seu coração. Era uma sensação aconchegante e acolhedora, que há muito não sentira e sequer cogitava fazer tanta falta a si. O azulado prosseguiu:

- Você não só me deu motivos para continuar existindo, como também me fez experimentar o que realmente significa estar vivo. Tudo pode ter começado como uma causa na nossa irmandade, mas é justamente ela que nos une como uma verdadeira família e por mais que tenhamos perdido a batalha, nada foi em vão. Quero que continuemos sendo uma família e que pudesse contar mais comigo nos momentos de vulnerabilidade... – Um rubor se instalou nas faces de ambos após proferir essas palavras.

- Somos humanos, Abel, temos nossos momentos de fragilidade e nada me dói mais do que não conseguir fazer nada a respeito. Não sou capaz de desfazer o ocorrido ou modificar suas memórias, mas ao menos, permita que eu seja seu esteio e a sua fonte de esperança inesgotável. – Após essa declaração, as mãos de Abyss deixaram suas costas revelando o que estivera escondendo até o presente momento: uma caixa de chocolates em formato de coração. Ao abri-la os inúmeros chocolates em formato de boneca contidos em seu interior foram revelados.

- Feliz Dia dos Namorados. – Disse enquanto levava uma boneca de chocolate até sua boca, deixando-a levemente presa aos seus lábios enquanto fechava seus olhos num convite discreto a um beijo.

Após captar a indireta lançada a si, os instintos mais primitivos de Abel pareceram despertar e não tardara a consumar aquele ato tão aguardado por ambos. No instante seguinte, seus lábios selaram-se levemente aos do azulado dando início a um beijo calmo, porém igualmente inebriante e repleto de significado. Todas as suas tristezas, medos, inseguranças e desabafos foram colocadas ali, abrindo espaço para que um novo e puro sentimento os preenchessem.

Talvez o Dia dos Namorados não precisasse ser tão ruim assim. Enquanto tivessem um ao outro, não havia nada que não pudessem superar juntos.

Notes: Por mais que Abyss e Abel não sejam um casal canônico na obra original, a dinâmica existente entre os dois é tão maravilhosamente encantadora, que abre espaço para imaginarmos tantas possibilidades de cenários e interações entre eles.

Adventures in Librarian-ing

Today, while reading "Up, Up, Down" by Robert Munsch to a class of Grade 3s, I taught the kids how to say "Ouch!" in Portuguese (Ai!; pronounced AH-ee).

So for the rest of the story, every time a character said "Ow! Ouch! Ow! Ouch!" they'd replace it with "Ai! Ai! Ai!" in choreographed unison.

They started doing it entirely unplanned yet somehow unanimously.

Brasilian Sapphic Iconography

1. Sapatão: Probably originated from the use of men shoes by lesbians in the 1970s, sapatão - “big shoe” - is likely most common term for lesbians in the country. Outside queer spaces, it is often used as an insult, but it has been reclaimed by lesbians and bi people who identify with term.

2. Sapa: As a play on the word “sapatão” and on the fact that “sapo” means frog in portuguese, “sapa” came to be used in the same contexts as sapatão. With it, of course, also came the jokes and associations between sapphic people and all things frog - swamps, tadpoles, etc.

3. Caminhoneira: Literally “truck driver”, caminhoneira is the closest term to “butch” in Brasilian portuguese, in terms associated presentation and behavior. However, there’s is no terminological duality alike the butch/femme one

CONTEXT:

Portuguese parents have been complaining over the past few years that their children — Portuguese children — have begun adopting Brazilian slang and even the accent, due to the amount of time they spend on Brazilian YouTube. And it's HILARIOUS.

More context:

As you may know, the official language of both Portugal and Brazil is Portuguese. But obvs, like England and the US (and Canada, and Australia, and so on), each country has its own variant of the language: different accents, different words here and there, etc.

Now, the difference between Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and European Portuguese (PT) is a bit starker than British Eng x American Eng. Rather, we Brazilians feel like it's more of an "American English x Elizabethan English" situation. PT tends to sound more old-fashioned to us, due to the kind of grammatical structures they use (they actually have a few grammatical rules different from ours) and the way they pronounce their vowels is also harder for us to immediately understand.

However, Portugal is a small country (10 M people), while Brazil is enormous (200+ M people), which means BP YouTube has much, MUCH more content than PT YouTube. So Portuguese children invariably end up watching our YouTubers (like Lucas Neto, who is HUGE with kids), while we Brazilians are rarely, if ever, exposed to Portuguese content. It's a very one-sided cultural and linguistic transaction.

All of this leads us to the domino effect above: Portuguese children suddenly using Brazilian vocabulary and accent, and the Portuguese parents throwing A. FIT. They're saying their language is dying (it is not), that their kids need speech therapy (they do not), and more overreactions of the kind. It also opens the door to a lot of xenophobia, but to that, all I have to say is: you don't want us in your country? Well, we didn't want you in ours either, but you invaded us, killed all of our natives, stole our gold and proclaimed yourselves our king, so 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Oh, you don't want your kid watching Brazilian YouTube? Well, how about you... Um... God, what's the word?... Oh, right, PARENT. How about you parent your child and curate what they watch, instead of just pushing a tablet or smart phone in their hands and calling it a day? Maybe you don't have the time for it, which is fine, and most likely not your fault (thank you, capitalism). But it's also not OUR fault either.

As the picture above clearly shows, it's Gerard Way's fault.

I don't speak Portuguese, but one time I was listening to a gamer's stream, Cellbit, in Portuguese at midnight while working on a project about strokes for my anatomy class

I got so focused that I forgot it was on, and when I started hearing it again my sleep deprived mind FLIPPED OUT for a good 10 seconds because it sounded like gibberish and I thought it was English.

I have just started learning Portuguese, and I am fascinated by the pronunciation of European Portuguese compared to Quebecois French: we both completely omit a significant proportion of the vowels in our words in basically the same way. But whereas the attitude in Quebec seems to be that this is wrong or bad somehow, when learning European Portuguese it is considered the correct pronunciation. So the immediate conclusion I would draw is that there is still a strong "metropole = correct" bias.

But: Nobody ever seems to imply that the Brazilian pronunciation, where all the vowels are actually pronounced, is inferior. In fact, when trying to learn Portuguese as a second language, Brazilian Portuguese seems to be the standard.

To me, arguing that Quebec French is somehow inferior or less correct than France French has always seemed absurd, like arguing that Canadian or American English are somehow less correct than British English.*

And yet I know that a lot of people think that any English that isn't RP is inferior or incorrect, and that speaking RP means that you "don't have an accent". 🙄

I haven't studied Spanish, so I don't know what the attitudes are towards the respective dialects there.

I imagine this has all been researched and I am curious to learn more. I feel like in my limited experience, on a scale of how much the metropolitan dialect is valued over the colonial dialect, French is the highest and Portuguese is the lowest, with English somewhere in between, but I could be completely off base. I wonder what the factors are that affect these attitudes.

*I should disclose my personal bias that I vastly prefer Quebecois French: It's pithy! It's evocative! It goes straight for the gut.

Did you know that...

"The @ symbol, which we call "at" and which integrates the electronic address of any person on the planet, has its origin in Latin.

It appeared in the Middle Ages, when monks who copied texts and documents created symbols to replace letters, words and proper nouns, making their work easier. For instance, to replace the Latin word et, they created another symbol, interlacing the two letters: the ampersand (&).

Using the same interlacing resource, they replaced the Latin preposition ad (in house of) with the symbol @. Often used in accounting, the @ moved to the typewriter keyboard. And in 1972, American programmer Ray Tomlinson took advantage of the symbol to create the first electronic mail system."

Summary: Rayne adoece e agora cabe a Finn cuidar de seu irmão mais velho.

Notes: Enquanto escrevia esta fic, percebi o quão intimamente ela se relacionava com "Reflexo" e "Compreendido", ainda que não fossem sequências diretas. Com isso, decidi criar essa trilogia. O ponto era destacar as inseguranças tanto dos irmãos mais novos, quanto dos mais velhos e acompanhá-los em suas evoluções como personagens, sempre destacando os laços que eles possuíam como irmãos, além da formação de uma sólida amizade entre Wirth e Finn que teria se iniciado devido às suas angústias similares.

Numa pacífica manhã da Easton, o sol raiava com intensidade prenunciando um bom dia. Ou pelo menos assim deveria estar sendo para a maioria dos alunos. De todos os dias possíveis dentro de um ano letivo, Rayne havia sido agraciado com uma gripe justamente naquele.

A chefia do dormitório Adler, em particular, estava encarregada de muitos afazeres no dia e por mais diligentes que Max e Aorio fossem, duvidava seriamente que ambos pudessem ser capazes de dar cabo de tudo sozinhos.

No presente momento encontrava-se deitado sobre a cama de seu quarto, enquanto assistia os suspiros preocupados de seu irmão mais novo que encarava o termômetro acusando a temperatura de 40℃.

- Por Merlin! Você está ardendo em febre! – Exclamou o mais novo, sua apreensão era visível.

- Isso não é nada. Eles precisam de mim. – Retorquiu o maior enquanto fazia um esforço quase que sobre-humano para levantar-se da cama. Não fosse Finn a segurá-lo, este teria certamente desabado e se ferido, por conseguinte.

O mais novo, então, tornou a posicioná-lo com cuidado confortavelmente de volta à cama. Cobriu-o com os lençóis e em seguida espremeu o pano úmido, que estava submerso na bacia de água morna situada sobre o criado mudo, depositando-o sobre a testa do maior a fim de abaixar sua temperatura o mais rápido possível.

- Os veteranos e eu já estamos cuidando de tudo. Às vezes soa como se você nos subestimasse... – Respondera Finn com um leve tom de frustração em sua voz.

O primogênito podia ser bastante teimoso e insistente quando queria, o que por um lado configurava uma característica positiva, já que Rayne era o tipo de pessoa que daria a própria vida por aqueles que ama. Por outro lado, o fato de que também podiam perdê-lo justamente por isso incomodava aqueles que o amavam, principalmente Finn.

- Mas há missões com risco de vida. E se vocês se ferirem gravemente ou...vierem a óbito por minha causa? Não posso ficar aqui deitado e relaxando sabendo que aqueles que eu amo estão se arriscando por mim...

- Nesse ritmo você vai acabar se matando! – Retrucou veemente o mais novo, o que pareceu espantar um tanto o mais velho chamando sua atenção.

Esperava qualquer outra reação, menos uma resposta ousada do seu irmão mais novo. Desde quando ele teria se tornado tão corajoso? Percebendo a brecha, Finn segurou as mãos de seu irmão com ternura e prosseguiu:

- Irmão, você é uma pessoa maravilhosa, por mais que não acredite nisso. O tanto que você já teve que sacrificar em sua vida pelo bem dos outros demonstra claramente isso. Mas não acha que está sendo injusto consigo mesmo? Estou sob seus cuidados desde que me entendo por gente e a quantidade de feridas abertas que você carrega, sejam elas físicas ou emocionais é insano! Magoa profundamente apenas ficar assistindo você carregar esse fardo e não fazer nada a respeito... – A este ponto, o menor já se debulhava em lágrimas pela aflição.

Cada palavra que proferia era como uma facada em seu coração. Nem mesmo a dor que sentira no confronto contra Carpaccio se comparava ao presente momento. Ele sabia que jamais poderia vir a se tornar tão forte quanto Rayne, mas desejava ao menos ter uma chance de retribuir todo o amor do seu irmão.

- Eu sei que é pouco, mas peço para confiar um pouco mais em mim e me deixar cuidar de você neste momento de fragilidade. Não sou feito de porcelana. Se for preciso, eu suportarei a carga que for por você, mas me recuso a te abandonar. Você mesmo não faria isso. Divida o peso comigo, por favor. – Suplicava Finn em meio às lágrimas, porém com firmeza em sua postura e um brilho de confiança em seu olhar, o que não passou despercebido por Rayne.

Finn crescera tanto em tão pouco tempo. Teria sido seus amigos o motivando ou Kaldo e Ryoh incentivando a insurgência de seu potencial? Qualquer que fosse a razão, Rayne não poderia estar mais orgulhoso de seu irmão.

Sempre soube que Finn era capaz de grandes feitios, podendo até mesmo superá-lo em questão de magia, mas a carência de autoconfiança do mais novo era o que o abalava e nada podia doer mais do que ser incapaz de poder ajudá-lo nesse aspecto. Porém, os sentimentos ali expostos por Finn foram capazes de remover qualquer resquício de culpa que ainda restasse em seu ser, tal qual um afago gentil em sua alma.

Inconscientemente, um sorriso sincero abria-se no semblante de Rayne, que gentilmente enxugou as lágrimas que insistiam em cair dos olhos do menor e no segundo seguinte, não segurando sua felicidade, puxara Finn para um abraço apertado e tão requisitado por ambas as partes.

- Não sei o que fiz em vida para merecer um irmão tão precioso como você...

A sintonia existente em seus corações era forte o suficiente para silenciar quaisquer tormentos ou inseguranças que viessem a assombrar suas mentes, pois nada poderia ser maior que a pureza do amor entre os irmãos, que outrora trilhavam seus caminhos separadamente, mas de agora em diante andariam lado a lado.

Notes: Rayne é extremamente dedicado ao Finn, o que faz com que se preocupe excessivamente com o mesmo e que se questione se é de fato um bom irmão mais velho. Já o Finn, por outro lado, carece de autoconfiança. Então trabalhar esses aspectos me pareceu algo bem interessante de se explorar.
