i have a friend he is called Leg i was feeling down and he wanted to cheer me up and so, bexo was born

i sent him a photo of exo and he got to work with ‘guessing’ what they’re like it took off, with some.... surprisingly deep lore (with some fanfiction tones too which is... really weird.... he is the equivalent of a local ..?), and i think its hilarious so im going to make you read it all too

he knows literally nothing, especially about exo, and so he is completely making these ‘guesses’ insert: ‘characters’ from the photo alone (hence this is all done in lighthearted tone with no offence intended)

alas here is the deep lore that is the first part (?) of BootLeg (?)

hates that hes called paul

always trying to act like hes not a paul

daniel is deep with the kpop now, and despite his true nature, manages to keep up appearances much better than say paul

Terrance (Baekhyun)

always was the smartest but few actually knew because hes really quiet

despite seating plans in school he was somehow always in the back corner

nobody in the group knows his last name and no one is going to ask

they pretend theyre not scared of him but tbh he can probably smell fear

can also teleport probably so theres no point running. root vegetables only slow him down.

Brayden (Xiumin)

has a side gig as a drag queen

“he loves it, but kpop makes him more money. but that money lets him improve his drag. so he sees it as a really good cycle”

Paul went with it because he thought it would make him cool

nobody knows why terrance went along with it and it will remain a mystery

kind of the errand boy, nobody has made a coffee since he joined the group

he is genuinely cooler than some of the others but no one takes him seriously

partly because of ‘gunther’

also because no one has seen him in a tshirt that doesnt say lazarus on it

super confident, not at all justified

Anyway so many of my high school summers are associated with exo in my memories and I do think about that tweet that was like 'do you love that boygroup or they way you felt as a kid when you liked them' and yeah. I'm not really emotionally attached to them as people because I don't care about celebrities like that anymore but obviously I do still love their music and art and they were such a fun group to go through the child and die hard fan to adult and casual enjoyer pipeline I'm so happy I found about about them and they kept making products I can enjoy as I've grown.

this is not the first gif i ever created but i couldn’t find my first gif because i didn’t have any sort of tagging system back then.. vs wasn’t a thing and i’m not sure i knew anything about different file types so i would literally just take screencaps off youtube and plug it into ps to make it into a gif format. i barely changed any of the coloring/sharpening cause i did not know how to for the life of me LOL

i basically had to relearn how to gif when i started this blog because i took a four year hiatus but i’m back and i’m better :’) still not perfect though!! i’m still learning as i go

Notes from tie-in MCU comics:

Part 1:

[DISCLAIMER: I was making those notes without actually writing down from which comic they come from, so now I am... well... confused about the proper placement of them, but I tried to discern them anyway.]

CAPTAIN AMERICA THE FIRST AVENGER:

Lol, Zola was developing exo-skeleton looking like Iron Man suit and Vanko's suit in 1934. I kind of think part of Steve's dislike of Iron Man was because of that exo-suit. Also, Steve just saved the guy in a suit.

"The chain is only as strong as its weakest link" said twice to Steve, once by military doctor and second by Schmidt.

Poor Erskine, his family was taken as hostages.

Howards says "carefully open the casing". Steve does smash instead.

Oh no, Red Skull said that weapon can always be taken from you so you have to become the weapon. It echoes the sentiment behind the creation of Iron Man too closely.

Lol, Roosevelt ASKED for Howard PERSONALLY.

"Car is bulletproof!" "and a convertible!" is a funny joke xD

Lol he has bulletproof car because of cigarette's girls angry boyfriends.

Ok, so Howard joined SSR because he HAD BEST FUN IN MONTHS.

Howard has rockets in car and "leaves best toys for himself".

First Steve saves a Nazi from a tank, now he obliterates them with said tank. Pick a side, Steve. I know guy in the armor was helpless, but c'mon. You either don't kill or kill. You cannot just willy nilly choose. BTW does it echo saving Iron Man or smth?

Call back to floating car by a joke about floating tank.

Aw, no, Erskine's family died in concentration camp from typhus. (Those camps were awful, but are not shown in the comics. You better believe that they weren’t very nice places to live even without being overworked and killed by the Nazis).

Ok so Howard Stark was based on Hughes and Tony was based on someone Howard hated - Oppenheimer.

Ok, now Phillips made a foreshadowing for Cradle in the AoU. It even looks similar to Project Rebirth.

Oho my theory that Erskine heard Bucky talk to Steve and that doctor knew Steve lied is proved in this comics. They knew, they had a file on him and Erskine just picked him, saving his stupid ass from consequences.

Cap just threw a knife.

IRON MAN 2:

In the comics it looks more as if Obadiah sold Vanko instead of Howard, because Howard looks so surprised at what Vanko did, that it is impossible to assume that he was the one who sent the agents after Vanko. He looks surprised at the whole incident, Vanko betraying him and agents being there to apprehend him. One agent acts as if it was Howard's idea all along, but that line could be also read as just informing a bystander that they will deal with the issue instead.

Tony projected a drone which could clean whole desert full of mines with 100% accuracy and 0% detonation.

Also comics confirm that Tony cannot even have 12h break without Howard coming at him and demanding him to work when he is just a goddamn teenager.

Tony was just fighting for 19h, got a shower and has to go out again.

"If I hear of another innocent being put in a harm's way just to advance some pointless military agenda... there will be consequences" sounds like call back to Hulk.

Hm, Tony made 12 people work on one job? Also Natasha hates being called Nat and she drugged Samantha (the actual PA which applied for Stark Industries) to take her place.

[As of now those comics confirmed to me that Captain America joined army out of selfish reasons and that Tony was overworking himself as Iron Man and when he wasn't he was either partying, probably to relax in that way, or making new tech which saves lives.]

Lol, Coulson was so excited to look for Captain. Nick even made a joke about finding his fav action figure.

Lol, World Security Council wanted to get Tony's weapons and nearly fired Fury for trying to make Avengers.

Fury is like Tony. He hates his superiors. He will do as they say but won't stop doing what he does.

Lol, Fury got a call Tony will be dead and he jumped out of his goddamn bed asap.

Fury was actively stopping Stern from getting Iron Man by scheduling his meeting with Department of Defense "when Stern is busy" xD

Ok, so Fury got Lithium Dioxide for Tony, asked if it could be made into permanent cure, how sweet of him, but also learned that it could INSTANTLY KILL HIM instead and still made Natasha basically inject Tony with it WITHOUT CONSENT! So I dunno if he really cared about him when he asked about permanent cure or it was just more optimal for his plans. Also he got the cure during Tony's and Rhodey's battle at the mansion, so we cannot say he had a cure and didn't give it right away when he could.

"Don't blow your cover unless Stark is going to kill himself". Hm. So he wants him alive.

And yeah, he ordered Natasha to stick him with lithium dioxide when he distracted him.

Lol, Fury yelled at Coulson for letting Tony leave the mansion xD

THOR??? (I got lost in my notes, I didn’t write which comic was which)

LOL CLINT CANNOT EVEN TAKE VACATION. Also the speed with which he responded to possible alien crashsite, epic. He jumped and went as if it was Christmas, aww Clint.

Why Clint is giving money back to some store which suffered due to their operation? I mean it was nice and all, but who will give the money back to Clint? Fury?

So it was Hawkeye's idea to let Thor loose.

In the meantime Loki was on scene and tried to get Mjolnir but it didn't respond.

AVENGERS PRELUDE:

She cannot claim to change for the better just because she didn't kill two goons. And Sofia should see that not killing all of them doesn't mean she doesn't kill at all. But I guess leaving so many alive still counts for Sofia as Natasha going soft.

Exo-Toa

Exo-Toa are powerful machines used in warfare, bodyguarding, infiltration, spying, assassination, and so forth. Unlike a typical Xian machine or AI, their power source is unconventional in that they can only be powered by Kraata, having been built specifically to harness the Life energy of one and enhance it.

Having retained knowledge on Life energy from Makuta’s memories, as well as having learned from his own personal observations, Kratakal collaborated with various scientists to unlock the full powers of the soul through Kraata, enlightening them with his understanding of the beings.

In a dual-collaboration with Vortixx Industries, Kratakal helped its top engineers and researchers create machinery that could harness the power of Kraata, being powered by their unique energy signatures and wavelengths. Such machines were far more powerful and energy-efficient than a typical war machine; Due to the ever-lasting nature of a Kraata, machines powered by them did not need to be refueled whatsoever. They could remain indefinitely active, something that on its own would be a huge advantage over the products of rival corporations; However, Vortixx Industries was not just content on letting these machines be powered by the Kraata. After buying permission to analyze and study Kratakal’s own form, Vortixx engineers eventually devised prototypes that could enhancethe power of a Kraata, properly channeling it.

This new form of technology, able to interface with a Kraata’s life energy, almost like a reverse-engineered Mask of Power, would be able to change the face of Xian warfare. With advice and suggestion from Kratakal, Vortixx Industries dubbed the technology and machinery that could symbiotically function with a Kraata as ‘Exo-Toa’. The exact nature of the term Exo-Toa and its relation to the legendary Toa heroes of Okoto is currently unknown; That information comes from Kratakal himself, and suggests an alternate understanding of the term Toa that the Okotans are not aware of. Analyzing the name Exo-Toa would suggest that such machines are Exoskeletons for Toa… So then, why are they called ‘Toa’, when the machines clearly function on the energy of Kraata?

A few more improvements on the interface, as well as streamlining, resulted in the first official ‘model’ of Exo-Toa, dubbed the Vortixx model after the company that invented them. The Vortixx-model of Exo-Toa was an instant hit and success in the arms industry, with various groups from Zakaz rushing to buy as many as they could afford in order to overwhelm their opponents. The Exo-Toa would not only be able to enhance the Kraata these organizations brought by making them more powerful, but would also run indefinitely on the very energy of said Kraata. In-turn, the power of Kraata would serve to fuel additional systems, weapons, and components of an Exo-Toa, multiplying the destructive capabilities of a Kraata greatly.

As Exo-Toa models were purchased and used in combat, revolutionizing Xian warfare, knowledge on how to create them inevitably transmitted to others, such as the Nynrah Ghosts. Luckily, Vortixx Industries had foreseen this obvious outcome and filed for a patent on Exo-Toa technology, although the existence of bootlegs and alternate product models was going to happen regardless. Nevertheless, Vortixx Industries managed to secure a proper-hold on Exo-Toa technology, aiming to maintain a total monopoly. Kratakal, with his work done, resumed his usual business as usual of becoming a celebrity, occasionally selling more Kraata to buyers at even higher prices.

Exo-Toa come in a variety of models. Each mech is designed to amplify the power of a Kraata, acting as an exo-skeleton for it; In turn, the Kraata acts as an energy source for the Exo-Toa, fueling any additional systems and features it may be equipped with. Exo-Toa can run indefinitely, at least until they are too damaged to operate, or until their Kraata power sources are no longer present. Exo-Toa lack any minds of their own, being controlled entirely by the Kraata within, and thus have about as much sentience and intelligence as any Kraata; It seems that Exo-Toa technology may have amplified the powers of a Kraata, but it has yet to do any favors for the intelligence of one. Current patches and research are being implemented to amend this issue, coupled with the help of complex computer-systems and interfaces from Artidax.

Built specifically to be powered by and enhance Kraata, Exo-Toa themselves are completely incompatible with any other energy source. They are dependent on Life energy itself; Thus, it is not entirely out of the question to call them Xia’s own version of Life Automatons, able to bridge the gap between the power of Life itself and the material.

Exo-Toa tend to come at massive prices, and maintenance on them is ideally bought from Vortixx Industries; However, aforementioned bootleg-parties are able to send in their own less-costly technicians to buyers, resulting in profit. While others are technically forbidden from replicating Exo-Toa technology, there is nothing in print that forbids them from repairing and occasionally even enhancing it. Vortixx Industries has attempted to remedy this loophole, but even if they were to succeed, the fact of the matter is that not many Xian corporations pay attention to the law anyway. Thus, it is common for Exo-Toa to be bought from Vortixx Industries, and for repair technicians to come from other companies. Additionally, the existence of bootleg models still exists, and many genuine Exo-Toa have been sold on the black market, either by buyers or those who have stolen them.

As stated, Exo-Toa are utilized in warfare and combat, although more specific purposes can apply to certain models. Some models of Exo-Toa are meant to amplify just about any Kraata power, but others are built around specific abilities.

Some models of Exo-Toa include;

Vortixx- The original and most common, built by the pioneer of Exo-Toa technology and named after it. Vortixx models are towering, bipedal mechs equipped with powerful shredding claws on one arm, and a rail-gun on the other that channels the energy of the Kraata within. Like any Exo-Toa, they are built with a wide-variety of sensors and input systems to maximize the perception of their Kraata pilots.

Boxor- These lumbering, squat machines are equipped with massive, powerful arms. Boxor-models are built with cockpits for Xians to operate and control them; Unlike other Exo-Toa models, they are designed to be completely controlled by someone else, with the Kraata functioning merely as a power-source and nothing else. Computer-programs and interfaces enable passengers to control the Boxor, and Boxors themselves can ‘attune’ to the soul of a pilot, and be programmed to respond only to specific souls. Boxor-models are meant for use in construction, mining, and other heavy-labor jobs, but they perfectly function as battle mechs if needed.

Va- Among the smaller model of Exo-Toa, the Va-model is capable of folding up into a sphere for storage, travel, and defensive purposes. Each is equipped with a powerful head that can rapidly ram forward, with a transparent yet durable chassis showing off the Kraata powering it within. Each Va stands bipedal and is equipped with a pair of shields, one on either hand, to fire at targets with and channel Kraata power. Vortixx-Industries has recently invested in a variant of Va-models with Bohrok coating and armor; These Bohrok Va are among the most expensive of Exo-Toa.

Gahl- These Exo-Toa have a raptor-like appearance, equipped with a tail-cannon. They are designed to be ridden by up to two Xian passengers, and their legs can fold away to activate levitating hover-technology. Built with rocket-boosters, they are the fastest Exo-Toa, save for those powered by Speed Kraata; However, with Speed Kraata, these mechanical steeds cannot be outpaced. For rockier terrain, Gahl models rely on their raptor legs to traverse. A variant of Gahl exists that has four legs and is equipped with heavier armor, as well as turbo-cannons and blades on its front.

Kralhi- These four-legged centaurs are equipped with flexible tails that can hurl energy-bubbles to trap in targets; These bubbles can then activate on the Kralhi’s will, transmitting the power of the Kraata remotely and into whatever is trapped within. Additionally, the Kralhi-model sports a pair of bladed-forelimbs that can heat up to increase cutting efficiency. The Kralhi-model is designed mainly for capturing targets and has occasionally been paired up with the Vahki.

Maxilos- These autonomous sentries have built-in gatling cannons on their shoulders. Each Maxilos has a Twin-Bladed Black Fire sword attached to one of its arms, capable of firing regular ammunition. Custom programs installed within the Maxilos enable faster-reflexes for the Kraata piloting it, and improved waist-articulation enables Maxilos-models to quickly turn around and aim at enemy targets.

Baterra- These are the smallest of all of the Exo-Toa models, about the size of a regular Xian. These white-armored assassins are designed with Stealth Kraata in mind; When controlled by them, Baterra can stack their pre-existing camouflage systems to be completely unnoticeable. Baterra are typically used for espionage, as well as covert stealth operations and assassinations. Each is armed with a pair of razor-sharp claws to pierce obstacles with.

Lerahk- These bipedal, silver-plated models have the most complex programming and AI of any Exo-Toa model. Equipped with a dual-ended staff that can fold up, the Lerahk’s staff is capable of transmitting the Kraata’s power through the tongs on either end. Serrated fins contribute to the aerodynamic capabities of a Lerahk’s flight mode. Powerful assistive programs, designed after analyzing the most skilled fighting styles, enable the Lerahk to fight with incredibly precise skills and reflexes, utilizing its staff both for melee as well as ranged purposes. Lerahk have small boosters on their backs, as well as hidden-wheels beneath their feet, to rapidly slide forward when fighting, and they can spin their staffs at rapid speeds. Lerahk-models are among the most expensive and advanced of any Exo-Toa, and are meant for use as body guards.

Kraahkan- The most expensive and powerful of all Exo-Toa, the Kraahkan has capsules meant to store three Kraata, with one on the chest, and two on the thighs. The power and functions of a Kraahkan cannot be understated, requiring multiple Kraata to fuel their advanced systems, and their very name invokes the name of their power-source in order to highlight just what is needed. The Kraahkan-model is bipedal and somewhat humanoid in nature, and wields a powerful staff capable of transmitting its energies. The Kraahkan-model is incredibly powerful, fast, and durable, and can almost function as its own one-man army. Thankfully, they can only use one Kraata power at once, but even so they remain the deadliest of Exo-Toa models. Their assistive programming may not grant them combat skills as advanced as a Lerahk, but they are nevertheless vicious, ruthless opponents meant for all-out destruction. Due to requiring multiple Kraata, the Kraahkan relies entirely on a separate AI program as its true ‘mind’ to control it.

Academics Often Misinterpret Girls’ Generation’s Impact due to Totalizing Etic Views

Academic articles published surrounding Girls’ Generation and their position within the Korean Wave have often painted an incomplete portrait of the phenomenon they truly were. This post is meant to shed some light on the overlooked aspects of the group’s popularity in order to bring a fuller and richer understanding of their appeal.

In his article “Into the New World: Girls’ Generation from the local to the global,” Stephen Epstein argues that the group’s malleable brand identity allows them to serve many purposes, from company-promoted to fan-mediated, and from highly local to highly global. Epstein supports this claim by highlighting Girls’ Generation flexible image to serve a wide variety of interests including a nation-branding chic and contemporary image, a nation-serving cute and demure image, and fan-servicing sexy image.

In “Establishing an Imagined SM Town: How Korea’s Leading Music Company Has Produced a Global Cultural Phenomenon,” Ju Oak Kim argues that rather than a digital phenomenon, K-pop’s success is due to its highly company-mediated nature. To support this point, Kim brings up how SM Entertainment utilizes cultural hybridity to globalize artist images, then uses cultural technology to localize content.

Meanwhile, scholar Eun-Young Jung, in “K-pop female idols in the West: Racial imaginations and erotic fantasies,” claims that girl groups, namely Wonder Girls and Girls’ Generation failed in the U.S. due to their failed articulation of problematic Western views of Asian female sexuality over original artistry.

These are all very informative articles that provide reasonable observations and interesting case studies of Girls’ Generation’s previous campaigns and productions; however, due to their etic view, each scholar’s fan-response analysis is restricted to superficial impression as well as selective fan comment examination.

These all largely ignore fan-propagated culture’s role in Girls’ Generation’s international reception, as well is its impact upon their brand legacy.

I would hazard to argue that while scholar Eun-Young Jung may be correct in her analysis that SM failed to push Girls’ Generation as English-language artists in the states due to lack of focus upon artistry, that doesn’t speak for their success among self-initiated K-pop fans in the states, who were indoctrinated into the fandom through non-company-propagated means. What makes K-pop a global phenomenon rather than a Pan-Asian one, is primarily internet fan cultures.

In the case of Girls’ Generation, rather than a David Letterman performance or radio-play, many non-Korean people were introduced to Girls’ Generation not through glamorized, company-manufactured sexuality, but through viral videos. Subsequently, they would become fans after seeing Girls’ Generation on variety shows. While it may be argued that variety personas are also carefully crafted, this “dorky appeal” is still heavily overlooked by many academic scholars who use the group as a case study.

For example, a notoriously popular variety/reality appearance of Girls’ Generation among online fans is Intimate Note which has been subbed by online fanbase “Soshified,” and has been reuploaded multiple times on YouTube, Daily Motion, Openload, and so forth. These bootlegged fan-subbed reuploads have generated over 2 million views in what I’ve found alone.

Intimate Note is a variety show formatted to reveal a more honest and candid side to idols through a series of controlled games and activities.

On the Amino App, a social media platform for fan communities, fans have cited this show as part of the canon of content that must be seen by interested fans. One fan mentioned:

“This one appearance of SNSD on not soo famous variety show made me a hardcore fan of SNSD. All the members except Tiffany make appearance and arguably the best variety show appearance by any kpop idol. The Eng Sub version is present on youtube and I think I contributed 20 times to the total views of that video. Everyone need to watch it and it is completely worth your time”

Similarly, the fan site who subbed the video expressed similar sentiments:

“This is one of the best SNSD-centered variety broadcasts of all time. Who doesn’t love it when our girls dish out secrets on each other but still show their amazing bond. Everyone needs to watch this and if you haven’t fallen in love with our girls yet, you will after this and if you’re already in love, this will just cause you be a bigger glob of SNSD love! Enjoy!”

The Youtube comments are also filled with fans expressing joy over the member’s humorous interactions and echoing the sentiment that what made them hardcore fans is the member chemistry and their “dorky” image.

While Epstein mentions variety shows in his article, he uses it as a talking point to discuss the girls as representative of Korean national identity and how it becomes soft power when exported, but he fails to elaborate on the broader complex appeal. This fails to give the group dimension beyond plastic perfection and sexual pandering in the academic discourse of K-pop.

Ju Oak Kim focused on the SM Town Live World Tour and social media more so than actual fan impressions of Girls’ Generation, which served the article’s purpose of placing the K-wave’s exigence within the credit of corporations — but this also doesn’t account for the fan-cultivated phenomenon that demanded the world tour in the first place.

Another large component of Girls’ Generation’s appeal abroad is performance quality.

All of these articles mention SM Entertainment’s precise packaging of idol images and systematic training as performers, but all fail to elaborate on fan-response on the group’s musical and performance appeal. These articles often relegate them to the status of second-rate singers and performers under the impression of the inferiority of bubblegum pop, which allows them a springboard to draw conclusions of the group being powered by sexual objectification and contrived personalities alone.

I’m not denying Eun-Young Jung’s thoughtful analysis of the group’s hypersexualized US-debut or Stephen Epstein’s nod to their brand’s probable contribution to the rise in body dysmorphia. However, I would hazard to argue that those issues are not specific to Girls’ Generation, and broadly apply across celebrities of many cultures.

Girls’ Generation is best known for their dancing and synchronicity, but are also beloved by fans for their singing abilities, particularly member Taeyeon. In fact, as of 2019, on the Gaon Digital Index Chart, Taeyeon is the highest ranking SM artist, topping boy group EXO with ~1.1billion points. The girls have all released solo songs, proving their abilities to stand on their own, in addition to standing as a unit. While most have released pop songs, most surprisingly, member Choi Sooyoung’s solo release was a winter ballad.

Considered a group sub-vocalist and visual and trained to be an actress, Sooyoung would sometimes only get a single line in Girls’ Generation’s songs. However, her live vocals demonstrate that this was likely a brutal A&R decision rather than a necessity to compensate for lack of talent.

Academic case studies of Girls’ Generation almost unanimously focus on their heterosexual male appeal, with the single exception of their appeal to young Japanese women (Epstein). However, the latter phenomenon doesn’t receive a deeper examination as the former does, and this occurrence completely eclipses experiences of fans who are women, homosexual males, or any queer-identifying folks, for that matter. Yes, lots of company-promoted appeal is directed at heterosexual males, but Girls Generation wouldn’t be able to stand as it has without their broad appeal beyond male desire.

In conclusion, this post isn’t meant to just blindly gas up Girls’ Generation — it’s meant to illuminate a dimension of their impact that is largely ignored by the academic community. Only with a rich and complex understanding of the networked phenomenon of the K-pop boom may we further analyze its causes and implications.
