"There were tales that only the island knew. Ones that had never been told."
I was quickly hooked into this dark, atmospheric, suspense story set in the Pacific Northwest. Full of magical realism, it kept me guessing even as it led me to the answer.

🤍Hello friends! 🤍 I read this beauty a couple of days ago and I am so in love with the Brown Sisters! 😍 they are so raw and real! (SPOILERS FROM HERE) In the first book, I really resonated with Eve because of her chronic pain. I also suffer from chronic pain and it actually felt really nice to see that portrayed in a character! In this book, though I felt a stronger connection with Zaf. His struggles with his family's death and trying to respect Dani’s wishes about it not becoming a full-blown relationship! He is such a sweetheart 😍 But this book was so good! I honestly loved it, it had that feeling of frustration like “JUST SAY THAT YOU LOVE EACH OTHER GOD DAMMIT!” 😩 And that epilogue? So much cuteness🥺 HASHTAGS #ig #igbooks #bookstagram #booktok #bookstagrammer #booklover #booklr #booklrcommunity #bookishbuddyread #readingtime📖 #review #bookreview #takeahintdanibrown #brownsisters #brownsistersseries #loveislove #lgbtpride (at Odense, Denmark) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfORd-prASJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I did very much enjoy it, however. "Would you go woodsqueer, or would you have to be woodsqueer to start with? And what would you gain or lose? And what would you come to know about yourself and the world?"
Ask your local library if they have a ZipBooks Program or an equivalent! ZipBooks is a grant program for adding to your library's catalog. If your library doesn't have a book, but they do offer this program, you may be able to read it at no cost. This also means that the book will be added to the catalog, in most cases, so you are directly impacting your local community!

🏒“The only thing the sport gives us are moments. But what the hell is life, Peter, apart from moments?”
Beartown… I thought about this book a lot and I'll continue to contemplate it for some time. I'm planning to read a sequel, but later because I still need time to process this one.
Beartown was the darkest Backman's book I read. It had such a nervous atmosphere, a lot of darkness and cold in it. And the foreboding feeling throughout the book.
This is a story of a junior hockey team in a community where all hopes for a good future of a small town depend on the results of a hockey season. We follow a lot of POVs - hockey players, their coaches, managers, families, and other people who live in this town.
I will not recommend it as a first Backman's book. I think that A Man Called Ove or Anxious People can be more charming and heart-warming reads for the beginning. But Beartown is a strong book.
Beartown discusses a lot of hard topics - abuse, bullying, rape, and love, parenthood, grief, and all these little lies we tell ourselves to feel better, our desire to see the world in black and white even though it is not, and never will be. It's a deep book and I loved the process of reading it.
Also, for me, it was really interesting to observe children professional sport. I sport fan myself and while watching competitions I sometimes think about what professional sport does with human lives and especially childhood. This topic became even more relevant after I watched a 15-year-old breakdown on the ice during the last Olympics. So I liked this aspect of Beartown, in my opinion, Backman has a rather honest and interesting point of view.
If you want a long-burning read with a lot of different inner themes and the atmosphere of a small northern town - this is a good choice.
📖“Another morning comes. It always does. Time always moves at the same rate, only feelings have different speeds. Every day can mark a whole lifetime or a single heartbeat, depending on who you spend it with.”
