Small "What is going on in the bkdk this week" update

I am still trying to write a full on summary of the bkdk history in fandom, but for now, what is going on this week?? It is now the 6/10/22 and this week had been quite interesting!

Monday 3 October was international boyfriend day and Noguchi, one of Horikoshi's previous assistants, decided to bless us with this fanart, which was the most bkdkbk fanart he has ever posted:

The number 5 was quite interesting and some people have speculated it could be tarot related given some of the tarot references in BNHA. In particular the fifth card is teh Hierophant which apparently symbolizes: Marriage, alliance, captivity, servitude; by another account, mercy, and goodness; inspiration.

Later, the next day, we have this twitter. This is from Kobayashi Ryota who is the actor who plays Bakugou in the Ultra Stage musical (more info on the musical here). The tweet reads "I purchased the last volume of Heroaca. I've read it". The last volume is volume 36, where the famous chapter 362 is located. The additional video is the actor playing a romantic song dedicating it to volume 36.

The same day, Noguchi's mutual on twitter Hidero Mashi (who works on another work: "Prince of Stride") comments on Kobayashi's tweet, and later on Noguchi and Hidero Mashi ends up in a twitter space talking Bkdk. (just know that Hidero Mashi has been drawing bkdk fanarts for quite a while, in the past).

They both draw Bkdk dancing (here is Hidero's art and here is Noguchi's art), and Hidero even tries to (unsuccessfully) explain to Noguchi what the omegaverse is.

I love Aizawa as a mentor for Danny, but Yamada would be no joke a MAJOR help for Danny with his Ghostly Wail

Like, his Wail is crazy powerful. And I imagine that for a while after he got it, using it was hectic as hell. It's either 0% of his power, or 100%. If he uses it, the chances are about 50/50 if he'll pass out afterwards. And if he doesn't pass out, it's because he ran out of breath first. Which is, uh... no bueno. And when he triggers it, maybe it even triggers him. Like the scream is a mimicry of how he sounded when he got into his accident. And it brings up so many feelings and memories for him that he just.. doesn't want.

Take that, add in a Danny who had a hard time finding the time and space to use it safely in his world. (Ghost Zone won't work. Not if he passes out) And you get a Danny who rarely practices it. And uses it only as a last resort. He can count on one hand the number of times he's actually used it

Then he gets to the bnha world. With their superheroes, and quirk counseling, and hero schools, which, nice.

And he meets Aizawa and Yamada. Aizawa, who can instantly stop him from using his powers. And Hizashi, who has a lifetime of experience with an ability Danny's only had for... Hm, let's say 4-5 months

Training Danny in his Ghostly Wail probably starts really gently. Maybe without even actually triggering it at first. They start with singing lessons and vocal exercises. Danny hates it, gets super embarrassed about it, but it does work when it comes to having more control over his voice. So when their lessons actually get to the point where Danny triggers his Wail, he's able to control the volume and power at least a little. Though for the first couple of times, he still needs Aizawa to stop him before he drains himself like a battery

And of course Present Mic, the legend with a mic.. he's probably over the moon about who he's decided is his little dueting buddy. So.. run, Danny, run. Little Listener? Not Danny

hey what’re your thoughts on bnha rn. you’re like one of the only dudes i trust with opinions on this manga/anime lmao

LOL idk why im one of the only guys u trust for manga/anime opinions BUT SURE do you mean like... what do I think of the current plot? or mha in general? (I will answer both. i love to talk) current plot: (SPOILERS) It's clearly the final arc and its clearly taking longer than Horikoshi intended lol. Overall it's decent shounen fare? Nothing mindblowing but it's well drawn and weekly developments r fun so im not complaining. I'm not the type to get rly invested in villains so AFO/shigaraki even Dabi are only interesting to me thematically and as characters I don't rly care but the visuals are cool enough. I love the pure white negative space hair and Horikoshi clearly loves AKIRA LOL. I will say I LOVE the ongoing Boku No Open Heart Surgery saga that's going on with Bakugo though. I love that they have to save him in some ridiculous weird power-based way lol, normal first aid would be booooring!! + I think its smart for the manga to keep him teetering on the edge of death and flashing his lifeless body every 5 pgs (lol) because it means even if the final fight drags a lil I'll keep tuning in.

in general: There's a lot of shounen manga out there but there's only one shounen manga that caters specifically to people who love the school aspect of x-men comics so I think I'm pre-disposed to love mha based on that alone. Beyond that, I love how idiosyncratic and energetic horikoshi's art style is.. I feel like the two things u can tell right off the bat abt his drawings is that he draws rly fast and that he rly loves his characters lol. Evident in the sketches he puts on twitter and the bonus content in all the tankobon volumes (it's also great for ""content""" he's a good content creator), he's always coming up with situations and outfits and concepts on the fly for those kids like they truly live in his brain. Also the more I read the more I realize I actually quite enjoy Horikoshi's writing too? I think he really clearly grew up with and adores paying homage to corny shounen superhero stuff but he's also very genre savvy and (I think) purposefully avoids a lot of common criticisms and pitfalls. Like the power scaling is pretty tame, the adults never truly give up responsibility of the kids & continue to own up to mistakes/endangerment (but never so much as to prevent the kids from doing cool action stuff!! duh), the cast is relatively well balanced despite being so big etc etc... It's not perfect, there's pretty significant failing on gender parity, and some of the pacing is way better in archival format > week-to-week but it's pretty good overall. Also its funny?? I feel like in the midst of 9486135613 action battle series + generic anime comedy we forget to address when something actually has good jokes and i think mha does. The aoyama cheese stuff made me laugh, the kids protesting biased commentary was funny as hell, and honestly i think mirio distracting afo with his ass?? funnier than naruto's final yaoi no jutsu imo. Sorry if you wanted me to dish out criticism I know its kind of popular to hate on mha rn because it's pretty generic low-brow shounen. And also adults who obsess over yaoi-ifying these kids are like the butt of the joke on the internet rn. But I don't rly run in fandom circles, it's just a solid manga to me with fun characters. Actually 90% of the reason I started reading mha again was because I listened to the mangasplaining ep abt it recently and they made me remember how much there was to like! Good to listen to if you want a more fandom-free objective take on the manga. Also Horikoshi credits all of his assistants in a bonus page in every volume! just a cool thing to note! kinda rare for a mangaka and kind of important for a series that requires as much assistant work as a wsj shounen. I feel like the amount of assistants that have gone on to lead mha spin off manga projects is kind of testament to how good his relationship w them is.

I also feel you on the KHR reboot, though I can't find it in myself to completely give up hope. You know what I would happily settle for? The manga being put back in print. I live in the USA and I hate that it isn't sold anymore

I can definitely get not wanting to completely give up hope! I wish with all my soul a reboot would come along and surprise us all, revitalize the fandom, so I get the want for it, just don't really think it will happen sadly! Oh my god though, do I feel you on that one. Canada here - I have volumes 1-5 and 7-10 collected in earlier days of the fandom before they became quite so impossible to find. I cannot find volume 6 anywhere and even finding any volumes past 10 now? Impossible, unless I want the original Japanese versions and even then, they're used copies and expensive. I'd honestly love to see a rerelease of the whole manga, especially if they'd put out omnibus editions to make it easier to collect and afford! And you are definitely preaching to the choir on the Hidden Bullet novels. I have so many other series where translations of the light novels are easy to find and it should've been like that with KHR. Hell, I bought the School Briefs for BNHA and the BSD light novels right from my Kindle! The Hidden Bullet novels, translated and readily available, I think would have drawn a lot of fans in. The fan translations I've read were all solid, yes, but hard to find and I had to use Google Translate on a couple of them, but the stories alone?? God, some of them were absolutely incredible and they all added a lot of really interesting aspects to the characters! You're not alone in those wishes at all and I'm with you - I doubt it would happen. I'm sure the publishers and such don't think there's enough of a demand, but it would be like 20+ years of Christmases all at once if it ever happened! I bought another volume of the bnha manga and here's my thought process with it so far and like. 90% of my thoughts are about Endeavor because he's in this but there's some other thoughts too.

So onto the thoughts!

1.) the realization of 'oh no, this has the Award Ceremony.

2.) Horikoshi's notes on Endeavor's character page is interesting. Saying that he's too much of a one-dimensional powerhouse character to have been a major secondary character and doesn't have much going on and is just there to be a shitty father for Shoto's backstory. This is.... quite interesting given the developments later. And as a writer, I 100% understand the vibe of 'this one-off character suddenly becomes something major'.

3.) I am really re-iterating my feelings that Katsuki's anger in the fight against Shoto is just. A lot of things. A lot of legit reasons. And also like, the fact that Katsuki is specifically trying to goad Shoto into using his fire? Purposely giving what should be easy opportunities that Shoto won't take? Very telling on how calculated and precise he can be.

4.) Honestly /in general/ while Katsuki is very brutal, you can also see that he's incredibly calculating and quick to pick up on is opponents' strengths and weaknesses. He's not just relying on being a powerhouse, he knows how to handle any opponent.

5.) Izuku: "I swear I'm not All Might's Secret Lovechild. But also I'm gonna make a direct parallel comparison to how I'm not All Might just like Shoto isn't his father and surely this has no implications!". Like I know it's about the role they want to play and the 'same Quirk, but it's your Quirk' thing. But still.

6.) the in-universe advertisement on the back is hilarious because it's Endeavor in a coffee ad but the can of coffee is so fucking tiny compared to him lmao! I'm honestly curious if the in-universe ads continue into the current manga volumes because given how the later arcs go? It's giving the same energy as that part of the Truman Show where he's freaking out and one of the actresses goes into a hot chocolate ad.

7.) Swinging back to Endeavor's character notes page: Idk why I'm fascinated by this but you know how there's a category for 'favorite thing'? Some characters list food or items or activities for what they like. But I keep focusing on how not only was his favorite thing listed as a food, but it's a desert food that's known to be eaten on hot summer days (Kuzumochi).

i am now 5 volumes in to bnha and i still do not care that much about midoriya or bakugo. I think the world the author has created is interesting but i just dont really give a shit about the characters the story wants me to care about.
