Starting at the Beginning: Sunkissed Child as a Note on the Beauty and Necessity of Returning to Self
Tumblr media
Sunkissed Child: Poetry in Black Life is an homage to, a celebration, and an encouragement of your survival. Not only the survival of your physical body, but also the survival of your inner child and, inherently, your black radical imagination. The life we are all striving to achieve – one of ease, joy, fulfillment, abundance, prosperity, and success– is dependent on both the validation of your inner child’s knowledge, needs and creative pursuits and interests, and the integration of them into who you are now. And this integration, this survival of your inner child, happens when you go back to the beginning.
Who were you before you were told who to be? What fascinated you? What made you bubble with excitement? What made you want to grow up quicker so that you could fully dive into it without the restraints your childhood may have imposed you? Who were you as a child? Who were you at the beginning?
It’s easy to forget who you are. You grow up and experience pain, heartbreak and traumatic events; you develop mental health struggles and try your best to cope with them, along with meeting the demands of your everyday life. Which includes everything from texting that person back to figuring out how you’re going to support yourself because you’re getting kicked out and school is just too much and you’re grieving the loss of someone or something and your physical health needs attention.
They tell you your only way out is to be like everyone else. Get into the same money-making schemes as everyone else; listen to the same music (that’s how you increase engagement); have the same aesthetic (how’s anyone gonna like your stuff?); to dress alike; to look alike; to have the same views about everything. It’s easy! And that’s why it’s dangerous.
The first reason is because this unspoken rhetoric entraps you in a rat race that makes you think that when you don’t go viral, and you’re not rich, and you’re still struggling to make ends meet, even when you’re checking all the boxes, that there is something wrong with you and that you need to run faster on your wheel, and not something wrong with why you felt the need to assimilate to survive in the first place.
And the second reason is because it kills your imagination and starves and invalidates your inner child who is the key to…

Growing up in the the Bay Area was an exciting experience in the 90s and early 2000s. The streets were wild and yet fun. With Sideshows in front of Ben's burgers after the Raiders won, festivals and street faires. Lake Merritt was the place to be. Sun, fun and food. Now the streets are filled with violence, police presence, drugs, pimps, and hoes. Sports were popular to us because thats all we had. The Raiders, A's and Warriors. Literally taking away the only thing we had left to be proud of, GENTRIFICATION AND TECHIE TAKEOVER BECAME REAL. WHAT DO WE DO NOW? THAT OUTSIDERS ARE NOT HAPPY WITH WHAT MAKES US HAPPY!?!

First off, I just want to thank you for being here. I pray that you find this platform one that you can be open, find clarity and feel safe with expressing your thoughts. Regardless of what it is that you are seeking from this, welcome to YOUR safe space.
My name is Kayla. I am from Boutte, Louisiana. First and foremost, I am a wife to an amazing man, and a mother to a beautiful little girl, who reminds me everyday that NOTHING is worthy or capable of me losing sight of my faith. But at one point, I almost allowed myself believed that I was not worthy of being in their lives, or worthy of living life in general. So let's talk about it.
For two years, I kept my anxiety and depression struggle a secret from everyone. Why? Well it's probably the same reason as you:
As a black woman, feeling like you have to be strong at all times. Feeling obligated to minimize our own feelings and emotions to benefit others. Or...maybe you were afraid that admitting to your imperfections ( because that's all depression/anxiety is ) , would make you appear weak.
As a black man, feeling like being vulnerable and showing emotion makes you weak or less of a man. Feeling like you have no place within society that doesn't place stereotypic views on who you are, or feeling the pressure of high expectations and obligations that leaves no room to express and embrace what you are going through and struggling with.
These are all the excuses that I used. Instead dealing with my shit head on, I kept myself busy with school and working multiple jobs. Until one day, it caught up with me and forced me to take accountability for how I contributed to things getting as bad as it did.
February 3rd, 2022...
I'll always remember this day because it signifies the day where I reached the absolute lowest point mentally. I did not recognize myself. I just remember crying non-stop, wanting to end my life, being erratic, and crying for help. I couldn't see my faith. I couldn't feel my strength. I couldn't even acknowledge the beautiful life that I have. At this time, my thoughts were so loud, and my body had fallen so weak, that I felt defeated.
What saved me, is me allowing myself to ask for help while in that vulnerable state. I allowed myself to be seen...in my lowest moment. With the help of my friend, Maya and my husband Cody, I was able to not only defeat the thoughts that tried to kill me, but I took the first step in healing: self-transparency and taking accountability for how I contributed to my downfall. Next, I decide to open up to my close family and friends, and no longer hide or be ashamed of not being perfect. I even found an amazing therapist, Mrs. Tonja Chopfield-Jackson, who I SWEAR was hand picked by GOD just for ME!!!! omg...
But let's get to my motivation and purpose behind mental health advocacy...
It took for my faith to be tested, for me to find my purpose and calling in life: Advocating for mental health in the black community. I could've easily allowed circumstances and life battles to turn me into a victim. But I didn't and I never will. Instead, I wanted to use it as a chance to not only heal on my own, but be an advocate for mental health in the black community and provide a safe space for us to be able to be unapologetic when it comes to discussing mental health, childhood trauma, generational curses, and cultural issues that society expects us to water down for their comfort.
AHT AHT!! This isn't the place for it, and it will not be tolerated. Speak your truth. Be angry. Be sad. Whatever is on your heart, I am telling you that THIS is a place where you can just BE.
Welcome to Noir Elevation. If you've made it to this last sentence, I thank you and I'm proud of you.
Blessings,
Love, Kay.

“Romanticize Your Life”: What Does This Even Mean?
“Romanticize Your Life”. I’ve been seeing this going around a lot lately, and you know what that means: whenever social media gets a hold of a phrase or term, the original meaning or intention behind the word or phrase gets watered down, turned into something else entirely, or it gets attached to a very specific image that people feel like they have to replicate, which entangles them right back into the rat race of life and social media. And this is exactly what’s happening with “Romanticize Your Life”.
Whenever I see this term now, it’s usually coupled with TikToks of people going to brunch, buying themselves flowers and candles, and several other ways people have been taught to “romanticize” thier lives through social media. I’m not annoyed because people are doing these things for themselves, those are beautiful things; I’m annoyed because I think that people are being conditioned to forget their innate ability to simply live their lives, and people are assuming that everyone has the capacity and abilities to romanticize their lives in the same ways. People are forgetting to live their lives in a way that’s authentic to them, and are instead aiming to emulate the ways other people choose to romanticize their lives. This can lead to people being more frustrated and disappointed with their lives, thinking that something is missing or that they’re doing something wrong, or that they have to work harder in order to enjoy their lives, when in reality, everyone’s lives are different and what we see on social media is not a true reflection of what life is or how it should or can be lived.
If you only have the capacity and energy to shower and give your body the necessary rest it needs because you have certain disabilities or chronic illness, take certain medicines, or if that’s just all you have the energy to do because of life’s various demands, then you can (and should!) romanticize that shower and that rest. Let those be your pieces of paradise. After all, it’s what you get to do for yourself and your overall health and wellness.
If you only have the capacity to cook home cooked meals and enjoy them in the comfort of your home, then you can(and should!) romanticize that. Or if you want to create art and order take-out, then they you can (and should!) romanticize that. It’s your life. This is your story. And what a beautiful story you have.
What I’m saying is, when you see videos and tips on how to romanticize life, and you notice that things are inaccessible to you, or the materials and experiences that are being romanticized are out of reach — whether it’s due to certain disabilities or your energy levels, or because you may be experiencing housing deprivation or insecurity— it's important for those of us who may be experiencing these things to remind ourselves that whatever we do in our lives to survive, to make ourselves comfortable, or that brings us joy, is romantic enough. There is so much beauty in our day to day lives, and, for many of us, even though those luxury apartments, king-sized bubble baths, bouquets of roses and brunches every week are not in reach (yet), that does not mean we don't get to romanticize our lives every step of the way to the luxury lifestyle of our dreams. And on the way, you may just find you’ve been living the life you’ve wanted to all along.
I think this may have been the original meaning of romanticizing your life, at least this is what Azé and I are going with. Whatever you do in your day to day, appreciate all of it, without feeling like something is missing, that you need more materials, or need to add or be any different than what you are or have the capacity to do because of pressure from social media.
We wanted to leave you all with a few affirmations that speak to romanticizing our lives in a way that’s most aligned with our highest good.
Get the affirmations here from our blog —they’re at the bottom of the post :)

Just because a shirt features an artist from the 90s doesn’t make it vintage. You, Generation Z, are older than that shirt. What is there to do for locals and travelers?! If we have No sports teams left, beside the Oakland Roots.. Its Soccer for those who just gave up on Oakland for any excitement. We have no drive ins, turned it into a flea market where its also considered the easiest place for your car to get stolen. I would have been so grateful, if they would have BIPPED IT, INSTEAD OF STEALING THE WHOLE DAMN CAR!!. YOU HAVE TO BE careful YOU DRIVE A HONDA, TOYOTA AND KIA. No malls.. I CAN TOTALLY UNDERSTAND WHY, BUT THATS THE PROBLEM. OUR YOUTH have NOTHING TO OCCUPY THIER TIME. They ARE literally a product of their environment. SMOKING HELLA WEED, DRINKING, POPPING PILLS, SMOKING CRYSTAL METH AND GETTING LUCKY BY NOT BEING SERVE any FENTANY.. ROBBING, STEALING AND KILLING J7ST TO GET HIGH.. LIQUOR stores AND SMOKE SHOPS EVERYWHERE. YEAH OAKLAND HAS a few recreation centers left. YMCA in downtown ,But what programs do they have that really are teaching our youth life skills, financial literacy, uplifting them because who knows what they endure after the program .. we have failed the next generation...  All parks filled with tents or homeless. Coliseum movie theater closed. Walmart closed. Malibu is gone. Alameda Beach needs to be shut down, white people swimming in Lake Merritt. We need to come together AND REBUILD OUR COMMUNITIES BEFORE WE ALL PARISH!
