Today's @whumpcember prompt is SOOOO much a part of the comic it was really hard to pick something to do with it!

"Touch Starved"

Carrier society is very touchy-feely, because they don't have to worry about catching diseases. DJ is kept isolated by the threat of his father's wrath. Cal, like everyone else from the Outside, was raised to be extra-careful about germs.

So you have a pair made from someone who (formerly) had to keep their distance for their own personal safety, from a society where that was the norm, and someone surrounded by physical contact who can't partake in any of it.
