So, I'm writing an essay on the whole STATE of misogyny in WC for one of my university classes, and I was wondering if I could ask you a couple of things! No pressure of course, please feel free to say no!
A) Could I reference your good takes with appropriate harvard referencing and links back to your blog?
B) Are there any specific moments from the books that you think should be covered the most?
C) The end result will be a visual essay, so it's like those fun infographics people on Tumblr make on like ADHD and stuff, so when it's done, would you like to be tagged to read it?

While you're here and about to write something so legitimate, I'm also going to recommend you check out Sunnyfall's video on gender in Warrior Cats. She breaks down the arcs into numbers, directly comparing the amount of lines mollies have to toms, and examining the archetypes women are usually allowed to be.
I think it's a must-have citation in a paper about WC misogyny.
...and, I think it's insightful to look at the WCRP Forum thread about the video. Note how the respondents immediately come into the thread to complain about how the video is too long so they didn't watch it, dismissing Sunnyfall as not being entertaining enough to hold their attention, even whining that she starts with statistics to prove her point, which I'm convinced she did exactly because they would have cried that she "had no evidence" if she didn't.
I am not a scholar, so I don't know how to document or prove that the books have an impact on the audience outside of anecdotes. But I think if you do write a section about fandom, it would be worth mentioning the in-universe and metatextual apologia for Ashfur and its reflection in the real world discourse, the authorial killing of Ferncloud because of fan complains, and the utter defensiveness against the discussion of misogyny you see outside of Tumblr.
You may also want to check out Cheek by Jowl, a collection of 8 essays about sexism in xenofiction by Ursula K. Le Guin. There's a very unique manifestation of authorial bias in animal fiction, having a lot to do with how the author views "the natural world," and it's worth understanding even though Warrior Cats are so heavily anthropomorphized.
So... Warrior Cats Misogyny
I think discussing individual instances can be helpful, but I'd implore you to keep in mind what's REALLY bad about WC's misogyny is framing and the bigger picture.
Bumble's death is shocking and insulting, but it's not just that she died. It's that the POV Gray Wing sees her as a fat, useless bitch who took his mate so she deserves to be dragged back to a domestic abuser, and he's right because the writers love him so much. It's that Bumble's torture and killing only factors into how it's going to hurt a man's reputation.
It's how Clear Sky hitting, emotionally manipulating, or killing the following women,
Bright Stream (pressured into leaving her home and family)
Storm (controlled her movements and yelled at her in public)
Misty (killed for land, children stolen)
Bumble (beaten unconscious, blamed nonsensically on a fox)
Alder (child abuse, hit when she refused to attack her brother)
Falling Feather (scratched on the face, subjected to public abuse and humiliation)
Tall Shadow (thrown into murderous crowd, attacked on-sight in heaven)
Rainswept Flower ("blacked out" in anger and murdered in cold blood)
Moth Flight (scratched on the face for saying denying medical treatment is mean, taken hostage in retaliation against mother for the death of his own child, which he caused)
Willow Tail (eyes gouged out for "stirring up trouble")
Is seen as totally understandable, forgivable, or not even questioned at all, when killing Gray Wing in an act of rage would have been "one step too far" with the ridiculous Star Line.
"Kill me and live with the memory, and then let the stars know it would only matter if a single one of your murder victims was a man."
It's the way that fathers who physically abuse their kids out of their ego (Clear Sky, Sandgorse, Crowfeather) aren't treated anywhere near the same level of narrative disgust and revulsion the series has for "bad moms", even if they're displaying symptoms of a post-partum mood disorder (depression, anxiety, and rage), an umbrella of mental illnesses 20% of all new mothers experience but are heavily stigmatized with (Sparkpelt, Palebird, Lizardstripe).
It's Crookedstar's Promise giving him two evil maternal figures in a single book, while bending over backwards to make every man in a position of power still look likeable in spite of the fact they're enabling Rainflower's abuse. Leader Hailstar is soso sorry that he has to change Stormkit's name for some reason, in spite of leaders being unaccountable dictators the other 99% of the time, and Deputy Shellheart functionally does nothing to stop his own son from being abused or even do much parenting before or after the fact.
It's the way men's parental struggles are seen sympathetically, and they don't have to "pay for it" like their female counterparts (Crookedstar's PPD vs Sparkpelt's PPD, how Daisy and Cinders are held responsible for Smoky and Whisper being deadbeats, Yellowfang's endless guilt for killing her son vs Onestar's purpose in life to kill his own), even to the point where a father doesn't have to have raised their kids at all to have a magical innate emotional connection to them (Tree's father Root, Tom the Wifebeater, Tigerstar and Hawkfrost).
It's less speaking lines and agency for female characters, being reduced to accessories in the lives of their mates and babies, women getting less diversity in their personalities, with even major ex-POV characters eventually becoming "sweet mom" tropes.
You could zoom in on any one of these examples and have an amoeba try to argue with you that "Oh THIS makes sense because X" or "Ah well my headcanon perfectly explains this thing" or "MY mother/girlfriend was abusive/toxic/neglectful and I've decided that you are personally attacking ME by having issues with how a character was written or utilized," but the beleaguered point,
That I keep trying to hammer in, over and over, across books worth of posts,
Is that these are trends. More than just a couple one-off examples. It's the fabric that has been woven over years, showing a lack of interest in, or even active prejudice of, women on behalf of the writers.
LONG STANDING trends, which have only gotten worse as the series progressed. From Yellowfang being harshly punished with a born evil son who ruins her life in TPB and the mistreatment of Squirrelpaw that begins in TNP, all the way up to the 7 Fridgenings of DOTC and Sparkpelt's PPD being a major character motivator for her son Nightheart.
So, I would stress that in your paper, and structure it less as "the Sparkpelt slide" and "the Yellowfang slide," and more as "The paternal vs maternal abuse" slide, and "the violence against women" slide. They're really big issues, there's tons of examples for each individual thing.
Anyway to leave off on a funny, look at this scene in Darkest Hour that I find unreasonably hilarious,

OK you win i started watching bbc ghosts and i liek it a lot...i just finished the first episode of season 2. U were right it is a really good and fun watch and makes me hate gay people but only a little bit. i love kitty shes so cute!! kitty and pat and the captain are my favorites. but there are only 2 seasons on streaming service.com so i hope there is more seasons hiding somewhere 😢😢😢
also i didnt realize there was an american version of the show and it looks... so busted... im glad i didnt accidentally watch that one instead because let me tell you that almost happened when i was trying to find where to watch the show

I wanna talk about a hyperfixation of mine: a little but of Queer History- W.H. Auden and gay poets
i would like to share with you a little bit of queer history, not super in depth but i want to share it with anyone whos not aware nonetheless (also i have no idea how many people know about this, so if this turns into a "oh everybody knows THAT"... hush. i dont care.
Okay, so a while ago I had to do a project on some poets asigned to me and write a short bio on them, talking about their life and career and things like that. So to get our information, our teacher had us looking in the archives and read a larger biography already written on them.... yeah.
So as I was reading this biography, i came across a part discussing his collaborators and one of the paragraphs mentioned W.H. Auden writing librettos with “Chester Kallman, an American poet and close friend who lived with him for more than 20 years," BITCH be so frrr 💀💀💀
So I read that like and immediately was like, hmm that sounds familiar 😐.... 🤨 but then I read farther into the biography and it said he had a wife and he was also super Christian so i was like... aw gUeSs hEs nOt gAy 😞
So yeah then I had to include a poem if his on the little infographic we were all making so i found one that I really, really liked called "Stop All The Clocks"

Yeah so I read that poem and immediately noticed the use of He/Him pronouns and thought... thats gay Soooooooo what did I do? I looked up if he was gay or not! And you know what google said? Yeah! He was!
One google search told me more about this man than an official archive with professionals 😐
W.H. Audens lifelong partner was Chester Kallman, and they translated/wrote (?) librettos together <3

Yeah, I did, and yeah, he was. But guess what? Gay people can be Christians too, and this man managed to do it in the fucking 40s till his death in '73. Albeit this came with many struggles internally, he still lived with Kallman till his death. So yeah, gay people had happy endings back then, even the religious ones :)
He also had some pretty rocking views on religion. Auden, thoughout his younger life, hadn't ever been part of any faith until a trip to Spain... we could get into that but we won't. Anyways, his pretty rocking opinion on religion? Don't force it on children. It's dumb and it brainwashes them cause they can't make the decision themselves. He probably said it better but you get my point.
Also he had a lot of kick-ass political opinions too.

Anyways so heres where things really start kicking....
W.H. Auden's wife was Erika Mann. Erika Mann was an actress from Germany, and the only reason she married W.H. Auden was so she could get an American passport.
And GUESS WHAT??? She was a lesbian.
MUAHAHAHHAA anyways.
Erika Mann also had a lover named Therese Giehse, a German actress as well who was introduced to John Hampson, an English novelist, via Auden. Hampson and Giehse both married so they could to go to the United States.
Anyways so things got more fun when I found out that Erika's brother was also gay. :DDDDD
His name was Klaus Mann, and he was an openly gay man. I don't want to get into too much detail here though because his life was tragic and there's a hole burning into my stomach because it makes me sad :((((

I also dont think i agree with him about the activist speech from last night. And also hes the one always bitching about how if artists have a platform then they should use it so i dont know why he changed his mind about this
Yeah, I don’t know either. Like I remember this interview very well. Also, the idea that we should leave it to professional activists has this exculpatory consequence. Where ordinary citizens and civilians can just kinda turn a blind eye and say “well I’m not an expert so this isn’t my problem. I will let the activists do their thing and I’ll just mind my own business.” Which is the problem with white people. They mind their own business too much. To dismantle systemic oppression we NEED to tackle it on multiple fronts at once. Which Can only happen if we are informed/ educated.
HOWEVER IN HIS DEFENSE! I do still think he believes in artists speaking up. I think he just thinks that he does a better job speaking up when he writes songs like LIIWMI, Loving Someone, JC2005, etc. then posting an infographic online. Which…fair argument I guess. Protest art is important and we are so lacking in it these days.
That said, I really think the situation in Gaza (and to an extent Ukraine) has proven that social media does have an advantage. The reason that people are concerned on this level is because we now have tiktok and stuff. We can hear directly FROM Gazans and we don’t have to get it filtered through the news media’s Zionist lens. And we can see in real time through screenshots that Israel is putting out tweets and then deleting/editing them. We can see the disconnect between what the media / government WANTS US to believe and what is actually happening.
And, as I said before, him speaking out about other issues, but not this one, makes me and people like me feel so invisible and unseen. I was so sad to see Hozier AN IRISH ARTIST WHO MAKES SONGS ABOUT RESISTANCE put out a lukewarm statement that boils down to “oh no war is bad.” It’s really really starting to feel like it even artists like this who unabashedly stand for Justice are not interested in taking up our cause, it must be because they don’t care about us. Every day that goes by with Matty having a stage and a captive audience and not saying anything hurts a little more and more…. Oh well. Like I said before. The silence of white folks ain’t nothing new. We’ve been fighting for 75 years. All alone. And we shall continue to do so.

Hello!! Thank you so much!! And I am absolutely still doing the artist ask game! (Ask game here for anyone else interested in asking, I'll answer as long as I remember the ask game!)
3) What ideas come from when you were little
This is such an interesting question I love it a lot!
In a very direct way, I feel like a lot of my Avatar and Teen Titans stuff indulges ideas from my childhood. Both shows (especially Teen Titans) were part of how I learned how to draw. Sometimes I'll remember old Avatar ideas I had and rework them into things.
In a less direct way, I feel like a lot of my approach of drawing people is influenced by growing up Arab American and giving my childhood self art I think she kind of needed. It's definitely how my noses got like this.
In a something in the middle kind of way, I always loved drawing people and clothes as a kid. I was really into space which I think started my love of cosmic/sun and moon imagery. I was really interested in trying to tell stories and make characters.
The art style I've stumbled into also I feel is the result of my childhood self boldly declaring she wanted to 'draw anime' before learning how to draw Norman Rockwell type realism. I somehow landed here.
4) Fav character/subject that’s a bitch to draw
Vergil from DmC: Devil May Cry is the worst, hands down. It's his hair, his hair is always a nightmare. I cannot figure out why, but it has not gotten easier with time. Dante's is also difficult butt it's at least black so it is just kind of one mass of hair.
I feel like I also struggle with Links hair? I have a lot of hair struggles I guess but like other Zelda characters I don't have this problem with, it's just Link asdfghj. I think it's because his hair is very characteristic to his designs over the years, so finding the sweet spot how I want to draw him and keeping him recognizable can be tricky and always very dependent on his hair.
16) Something you are good at but don’t really have fun doing
Comics, probably. Every comic I draw has this cycle of starting out excited, questioning everything I have ever done, panic, then finish. Once it's finished I'm really excited and happy with the comic and forget everything else. But it is definitely a process.
Similarly, I usually hate shading. I'm not sure I'm like...good at shading exactly but I'm also not bad at it, it works. But most importantly, I hate it asdfghj
22) What physical exercises do you do before drawing, if any
This is something I need to do more consistently! I try to do hand and arm stretches before and during work, especially with my dominant hand, though I often forget because I get in the zone.
This infograph by Kaitlin Brunder shows a lot of the exercises I try to do though, especially the first three stretches. If I'm having a period where I've stressed my arm too much, I'll try to do them every hour or so.
I see some artists who do more intense and varied stretch routines and sometimes I'll shake things up and try new stretches, but I find these ones both easy to do and easy to remember so I always go back to them.

So many times people ask for my afvce on how to plot and scheme and they dont take the advice they just sitnthere and bitch and moan.

i'm a very emotional person, i guess, most especially when it comes to my beliefs. while i'm nonconfrontational most of the time, i always get easily riled up when things i value were being mocked or being disrespected by people. this is exactly the reason why i don't post much of political content cause bitch will get heated fast baka maiyak aku.
last year, i went on unfriending spree because i just couldn't stomach fb friends that support the red-green tandem, not all though, friends that i knew in my heart were good ones, i just unfollowed. tbf though, i don't mind that they are supporting them, you do you, what infuriates me is that instead of posting the achievements/reasons why they support their bets, they spend more time maligning, spreading false narratives, sharing fake news/splice videos about VP Leni. it's not that VP Leni supporters don't do the same (but a lot of being branded as 'paninira' were facts, and hindi paninira ang pagsasabi ng totoo) it's just that the things that they share were nitpicking and even nonsense in grand scheme of things. who the fuck question a woman preferring to be barefoot after wearing heels for a long time? who the fuck would dismiss her as lutang when she has constantly proven herself? why was it so hard to believe that people do actually work for 18 hrs? bakit masama and publicity ang pagsakay sa motor when the rider wasn't even a supporter and it's traffic? why was it so hard for women to be considered great and competent? why do they have to prove themselves more than men do?
naalala ko lang bigla kasi i just unfriended one of my co-workers which is a very lovely and mild-mannered girl. i guess she never posted as much about it kaya hindi ko napansin pero recently she's been posting a lot. what made me unfriend her is when she shared the edit of the uniteam line-up tapos infographics siya about the convictions/rulings against each of them and then she captioned "hindi na lang ako boboto kesa bumoto sa kabila." and it's like a record scratch moment, like huh? you acknowledged that their slate is composed of law breaking individuals but still, you're "solid"? and mind you, we're auditors, what happened to the professional skepticism? iniwan sa work? piso nga na hindi bumabangga iniiyakan na natin, tapos eto na walking red flag na, you're still supporting? if they were a company you're auditing baka umiiyak ka na kasi sobrang baba na ng materiality na need gamitin, dami ng samples na papasok.
anw, i just hope people here are smart with their choices and make choices that they could live with. i guess this election really reveals people and their beliefs. and i would never look the same way at them ever again.
