So, what is Berserk about after all?
Please be considerate to me, don’t repost this, don’t share it outside of tumblr, don’t copy parts of it, thank you.
Tumblr media
I have read really funny critiques and reviews of Berserk. Often they would refer to Miura supposedly saying that he didn’t plan everything out and they would use this statement to support their argument that after the Golden Age arc the story just looked like it dragged on. One, don’t ever fully believe what artists and writers say about their work. Second, without a proper conclusion it is impossible to make that kind of judgement and the story is ongoing. Then, not having a plan or having just vague ideas and taking inspiration here and there isn’t how manga works or how it gets published. When asked in an interview why he started creating Haibane Renmei as a doujinshi, Yoshitoshi Abe replied: “With mainstream publishing, it would've been difficult to do it with that avenue because of this particular approach with everything being adlibbed. I don't know how the story will be developed, how it's going to end up, or what the ending's going to be. If you go to a mainstream publisher, by their general approach, they have to know what the characters are, who they are, what the story's going to be, and how the story's going to develop so they know if there's going to be a serial, continuing storyline. They need to know how it's going to go”. Even though plans can be renewed and renegotiated, Miura still needed to make solid advanced plans and decisions and respect deadlines and page quotas. Even without considering this, the world building of Berserk seems too intentional and coherent to me to think that he didn’t really know how the story would go. Granted he created a reality that could be changed and bent by the human imagination and psyche, from the inside. This happened to be a brilliant choice for a long project like the Berserk manga.
I once read a review that pointed out the weakness of the later arcs and episodes, making the hypothesis that Miura was influenced by the success of stories like One Piece and Pirates of the Caribbean. I can’t really say that I share this opinion, either. Reviews like these make me smile, because they reveal how people missed a very big clue that Miura never really hid. Berserk was inspired by the story of Peter Pan as told by J.M. Barrie and reinterpreted in several different ways, not only visually. He went as far as dedicating to it the Lost Children chapters, immediately after the Eclipse, when the tension of the story was higher than it ever had been. We should read the Lost Children as an homage to the story of Peter Pan and Wendy that plays into the already disquieting themes of the original in darker tones and with much more horrifying elements; but we should also pay great attention to the Lost Children chapters as an important recontextualization of the events of the Golden Age arc. While I want to dedicate proper analysis and attention to this, I am going to add here that in Peter Pan we already had the pirates, the islands with hidden caves and the mermaids. The journey to Skellig island and Elfhelm had to be long enough for Moonlight Boy to make an appearance at least twice before the big reveal of his full identity the third time, and since he can only appear on nights of a full moon, Miura had to make the readers feel that time had passed. But Guts had always belonged in Neverland.
In my rudimentary outline of various elements that contributed greatly in building the world and story of Berserk, I actually ran out of space. And I want to properly address the various points and develop them more. For the moment I just really wanted to show that Miura had a very strong grip over the story and that he was really attentive to nuances. I said to myself, if I want to criticize the writing in Berserk at least I have to make sure I understand it to a sufficient extent.
Also I really wanted to at least give an idea of how important a role Shōjo manga had to Berserk. I hope to be able to fully explore this element soon.

i love how the first time guts' theme ever plays on 97 berserk is on the scene where griffith says he wants him to become his soldier, and proceeds to explain why, that he had watched him, found him interesting. i love the contrast between the baffled look on guts' face and his outward anger at griffith's condescension, because even though he is annoyed to be read this way, he's also deeply moved by the fact that griffith paid so much attention to him as a person, that he wants him near, because being seen and wanted like that by anyone is such a foreign feeling to him that he can barely grasp it, but he doesn't have to make that clear. the soundtrack already lays that bare for us

As I lay there in the soft glow of moonlight filtering through my chamber window, a faint rustling outside caught my attention. My heart quickened, recognising the telltale sign of his arrival. Griffith. He always came to me this way, slipping into my room like a shadow, his presence both thrilling and unnerving.
I held my breath as he gracefully landed on the plush carpet, his form illuminated by the moonbeams. There was something undeniably captivating about him, something that drew me in even as it set my nerves on edge.
"Hello, my dear," he murmured, his voice like silk, sending shivers down my spine. His eyes, intense and possessive, locked onto mine, and I couldn't tear my gaze away.
I tried to muster a response, but words failed me in his presence. There was an intensity to him, a darkness lurking beneath his charming exterior that both terrified and fascinated me.
Griffith moved closer, his every step deliberate, as if he were savoring the anticipation of what was to come. His hand reached out, brushing against my cheek with a tenderness that belied the possessive gleam in his eyes.
"You're mine," he whispered, his breath hot against my skin. "Only mine."
I wonder about why his words were so openly possessive.
Someone had said something to him.
A chill ran down my spine, but a part of me couldn't deny the twisted thrill that surged through me at his words. His obsession with me was palpable, suffocating, yet I found myself drawn to it, to him, like a moth to a flame.
And as he leaned in, his lips inches from mine, I knew that resistance was futile. In Griffith's world, there was no room for anything but his desires, and I was helplessly ensnared in his web of darkness and obsession.
Even though our relationship isn't permitted, I couldn't help it.
Griffith catches my hand before I make contact with his chest and guides it up to his neck. He finishes closing the distance between us, bringing us chest to chest, he kisses me and I forget anything else but getting him inside me as quickly as possible.
He lifts me, and I wrap my legs around his waist. The new position has his cock nearly lined up perfectly where I need him, but he moves before I can lose my mind enough to take advantage. We fell down to the bed, inciting a out of breath huff from my throat.
My need is an all-consuming thing that’s been building since the moment I laid eyes on him and I knew that he needed me as well. was his queen in his eyes, even though I am truly a princess he needed my status to become a prince himself.
Griffiths reputation was the 'falcon of light'. We were perfect for eachother, no matter what he will do to me, I will always be his stepping stone.
He takes my hands and guides them up to the headboard. “Keep them here," Griffith mumbled against my neck.
“Griffith.” I’m panting as if I’ve run a great distance. “Please. I want to touch you.”
“You shall do as I say, princess,” he repeats and gives my wrists a squeeze and he didn't need to say it again, I’m already nodding, I'll listen to him, forever and always.
Griffith lifted the pale pink nightgown up my hips, his cold hands dragging up the sides of my body causing me to arch my back into his touch. A breathy sigh left the confines of my mouth at the tingling sensation that he left behind. He pulled the nightgown over my head and trailed kisses below my ear to my collar bone.
He moved off my body to my dismay and stripped down his armour, revealing his pale, milky skin I've seen many times before. Griffith snuck into my chambers more than often. He took his time peeling the metal and fabric underneath off him and it made me tremble, I needed him so bad.
Griffith finally shifts back to kneel between my spread thighs. His front is in a somewhat of a shadow casted by the fire burning and crackling from the fireplace, but I have the feeling that he can see me in detail from the moonlight through the windows.
He cups my breasts, but he doesn’t linger long before he slides down my body and presses an openmouthed kiss to the sensitive spot just below my belly button. Content sighs left my mouth as my hands disobeyed his orders and entangled into his hair.
And then he’s at my pussy. His breath shudders out against my clit as if he’s just as affected by this moment as I am. Maybe more so.
“Your hands, {Y/n},” Griffith hummed against my clit causing a moan to slip out my mouth. "Remove them, or I'll bind them together."
I grip the sheets above my head unwillingly as he continued his advances to my clit and fight to stay still. “Please, Sir Griffith, take me."
I just want him.
He drags his tongue over my entrance. The only warning I got from was the tightening grip he had on my thigh got constrictive. There is no savoring, no teasing, no tempting me. He goes after me like he’ll never get this chance again.
Each time I exhaled sounded more like a pleasured sob. I can’t think, can’t move, can’t do anything but obey his order to hang on and take the pleasure he has rising with every movement of his tongue. I start shaking and can’t stop.
“Sir Griffith,” I moaned out.
He doesn’t respond, just keeps up the same movements that have desire coiling tighter and tighter through me. It’s too good. I want it to last. He sucks my clit hard into his mouth and pushes two fingers into me.
I come so hard, it feels like every system is shutting down. It’s as if that orgasm took his edge off because he takes his time now, dragging his mouth over my stomach, kissing the curves of my breasts.
I’m still spinning, but each touch, combined with the weight of his body on mine, slowly draws me back to earth. I lick my lips.
“Griffith?”
He pauses. “Princess.”
“Let me touch you, please.”
His breath shudders out against my neck causing my to shiver, he hooked his arm under one of my thighs lifted my leg up beside him.
“You are touching me.”
“I didn't mean like that,” I huffed as I shivered under the touch of his bare skin touching my own and his lips making wet sucks across my breasts.
I don’t release the sheets from my grasp, I didn't want to anger him.
I knew something was bothering him, he was annoyed at something, that's the one of the reasons he comes to see me, he uses my body and I let him without complaint because I want him so badly.
This is only sex, an act that can be simmered down to its basic components. I desire him, so naturally I want to touch him. I don’t want this to stop, so of course I won’t disobey his order. Except it doesn’t feel that simple. Griffith is very intentionally hiding from me.
“Griffith, please. I want to help you."
He hesitates so long, he doesn't move after his lips unlatched from my skin, he’s going to deny me again. He muttered something incoherent and reached over my head to take one of my hands and bring it down to press against his chest, and then repeats the motion with my other hand. The skin is too smooth in some places, even though there were scars, they felt smooth.
In the hushed silence of my chamber, I don't utter a single word as I trail my fingertips down Griffith's chest, feeling the tension coiled beneath his skin. His breath hitches, but he remains unnervingly still, his eyes fixated on me with a possessive intensity that sends a thrill down my spine.
With deliberate slowness, I arch up to meet his lips, a silent agreement passing between us. Words are unnecessary in this moment of tangled desire and unspoken understanding. Griffith's presence is both intoxicating and suffocating, his possessive tendencies swirling around us like a dangerous whirlpool.
Griffith lifts one leg to rest over his shoulder as he kneels between my thighs. I don’t have time to comment because half a breath later, he’s inside me. He sheaths himself to the hilt and we exhale in tandem. Griffith barely gives me a second to adjust before he starts fucking me. Long, thorough strokes that have me completely pinned to the bed.
He lowers himself and brings up my other leg in the same position as the other, my legs being pressed to my upper body while Griffiths weight held down. Griffith adjusts his angle and picks up his pace, sending pleasure rising in a wave that I can’t hold back.
“Oh, please. Don’t stop,” I whined. Words slip from my lips, forming into his name, over and over again. He leans down, bending my body to his will, and claims my mouth as I come.
His strokes get rougher, less even, and then he’s following me over the edge, his warmth spills inside me and I whimper against his mouth. My bones turn liquid even as I fight not to break the kiss. It’s gone from fierce to something gentle, almost loving. As if he’s telling me without words how pleased he is with me. It’s not something I would have thought I needed before now, but it settles a jagged piece in my chest.
Griffith finally pulls away. “Don’t move.”
I lay there, spent and breathless, the aftermath of our encounter leaving me feeling both exhilarated and unnerved. His touch still lingered on my skin, a reminder of the intensity of his advances.
"You're mine," he whispered, his voice a low murmur that sent a shiver down my spine.
I watched in silence as he dressed, his movements precise and deliberate, betraying none of the tumultuous emotions that had gripped us moments before.
Then he left again, leaving me.

hello! i hope im not bothering you with this ask or anything, but i really love your blog and the thoughts you write, so i wanted to ask if you any other titles you would reccomend that are similar to berserk (not necessarily in terms of setting, but mostly the Vibe) and deal with similar themes (i watched and read devilman!). i would accept anything tbh, be it a book or movie or a series. thanks in advance, hope you have a good week! :)
Thank you very much, and yeah I'd be happy to rec a few other things I like that have some similarities! Some of these similarities are pretty thin lol, but tbf Berserk is pretty unique, at least in terms of media I'm into, and I've seen some good homoerotic movies recently.
Anime/Manga:
Claymore is compared to Berserk fairly regularly, and it's not just for the big swords. There's no griffguts equivalent, but it's got medieval fantasy monster hunting vibes, similar themes wrt human nature (though more shounen, power of love-esque lol), great action scenes and cool monster designs, and a lot of great female characters with interesting relationships, which isn't similar to Berserk but it's a bonus by itself.
I've also seen Vinland Saga compared to Berserk, and again there's no griffguts equivalent, but there's a very Griffith-esque character who has an AU where Griffith became king the old fashioned way vibe, and a central theme is revenge.
An anon a while ago made the point to me that Light from Death Note is similar to Griffith in a few ways, such as wanting to create a kind of ideal world, and being very charismatic and having culty followers who view him as a god.
Books:
tbh I have a bad memory for books I've read, but here are a couple I read specifically because of Berserk similarities:
I read As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann because I was told it had griffguts vibes, and it did. Medieval lone wolf is recruited by idealistic blond mercenary who wants to create a utopia, falls in love with him, and gets fucked over. It's very dark, darker in some ways than Berserk, but it was a good read imo. More in depth post on it with warnings here.
Captive Prince by CS Pacat is known for the author having based one of the characters partially on Griffith, and you can tell lol. It's a fun read if you don't mind or are into the tropey sex slave setting, with an engaging gay romance that has surface similarities to griffguts, though the vibe of the relationship was fairly different to me. But like, the political scheming felt like a Golden Age AU to me. It's been a while since I've read it but for warnings there's rape, csa, incest, and sex slavery not portrayed positively but like, used as erotic scene setting if that's a dealbreaker.
TV Shows:
Hannibal! It's got intense homoeroticism, it's got betrayal, it's got an operatic level of intensity, it's fun to dissect analytically, violence revenge and trauma are significant themes, one character tries to escape his life ruining feelings for the other by killing him, and it's just a great time.
Yellowjackets also has strong themes of violence and how it's a temptation, and though I wouldn't compare any of the relationships to griffguts exactly, there's an intense tragic homoerotic friendship that haunts one of the characters decades later.
Xena has a campy overpowered anti hero dressed in black leather wrestling with their inner darkness and in love with a blonde, also a flirty exes kind of relationship with a god (though that's hetero lol). Not really similar tonally and no griffguts equivalent, but it's got some similar themes wrt violence, revenge, human connection saving your soul from darkness, etc, and it's a gr8, fun show.
Black Sails has a kind of love vs revenge thing going on, as well as an attempt to overturn the social order and create a utopian kingdom. In some ways it's similar in tone as well, often pretty dark and violent, but with some very funny moments, and set in a fictionalized historical setting. No griffguts equivalent, but all these shows are extremely gay.
Movies:
Ladyhawke gets a lot of comparisons to Berserk, and may have been one of Miura's inspirations since he cited Rutger Hauer movies. Starcrossed wolf and hawk themed lovers, medieval setting, significant eclipse, it's got the vibes.
Hellraiser is one of Miura's stated inspirations iirc, and I mean yeah lol. It's the godhand as sadomasochists. Idk that there's that much in common in terms of theme, but the aesthetic is there.
Yk what? The Lost Boys. Homoerotic, campy fun, brooding teen is recruited into a gang and has sexual tension with the leader... that should count.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture starts with Spock trying to purge all his emotions after we can only assume breaking up with Kirk, and failing, and it's a parallel to a godlike being learning to love.
Okay hear me out on this one... Sweet Smell of Success is like if there was no Guts and instead the homoeroticism was between Griffith and the King, and it was set in the New York world of 50s gossip columnists, and look, I recently watched and adored this movie and I want to rec it. And hey, it's about doing fucked up shit to feed your ambition and being pretty and charming while you do it.
The Favourite is about a servant seducing and manipulating her way to power in a royal court, kind of an f!Griffith AU without a Guts if you look at it a certain way. But also it's another movie I love and want to rec based on at least one similarity lol.
Uh, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is about a dude wanting to fuck a hot charismatic and guilt-ridden blond guy but being too repressed to go for it? Great movie in general. Also Midnight Cowboy is about trauma induced gay repression while we're at it.
And finally, Paul Verhoeven's sci fi trifecta of Robocop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers have virtually nothing in common with Berserk in terms of theme, character, relationships, etc. But the tone feels exactly like the Black Swordsman arc to me lol, to the point where I've always said that the only live action Hollywood adaption of Berserk I'd accept is the one Verhoeven directed in the 90s in an alternate universe. Miura was directly inspired by one of his 80s movies that I've never seen, Flesh and Blood, and yeah, I feel like you can kind of feel the inspiration.
I have other rec lists, as well as things people have recced to me often on the basis of similarities to Berserk/griffguts that I haven't checked out yet, in this tag, so I'd highly recommend browsing through it for more media suggestions. And if anyone wants to jump in with more recs for things that remind you of Berserk in some way, please do!

Is there anything that causes you lmk brainrot that you weren’t asked about yet? :o
Cause I absolutely love reading your analysis’ and/or your scattered thoughts. If so, this is a demand that you share with the class! No matter what it is!
I'm going to use this as an opportunity to go on a rant about 2x08! It's one of my favorite eps in the whole show and I'd love to talk about why that is.
I wanna talk about Sandy destroying the bear mountain. Can we talk about Sandy destroying the bear mountain? Let's start with Sandy destroying the Bear Mountain:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This alone contributes so much to not only the ep itself but to the hurt/pain motif (or theme) in the show as a whole. Sandy is the gentle giant who doesn't want to fight, mainly because he doesn't want to use his strength to hurt anyone or anything. We see this resolve all the way in the AHIB special:
Sandy: "That's a lot to take in. You know what I do to people who disrupt the peace? Serve them tea! [...] But I'm tellin' you now old friend: if things get hairy, I've changed. I don't go around picking fights no more!"
And it's the first thing he attempts with the Huntsman:
Tumblr media
But, the Huntsman presses all the right buttons, Sandy snaps, and because he does so destruction follows (specifically the destruction of that beautiful Bear Mountain that brought him so much awe before, which he has now removed from the world), and it's proof of what Curse MK speaks of:
Curse MK: "Such pitiful creatures. Cowardly, reckless, monstrosities—all doomed to play a role in tearing this world apart, to cause nothing but chaos and destruction."
(4x07 Pitiful Creatures)
-
It's proof of what even MK speaks of:
MK: "No matter what I do, it's going to lead to pain. It's like the Lady Bone Demon said—it doesn't matter if I want to help people or not, everything I do just- it just makes things worse!"
(4x08 The Brotherhood)
-
BUT, the same "Better than we found it" s4 philosophy still applies here, and the first thing Sandy does is check on the surrounding animals and then the crimson jimsonweed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even if there was some destruction, the creatures of this forest all made it out okay. And ultimately, because Sandy was there he was able to get what he needed to save MK.
The 2x08 conflict also parallels two other fights in the show: Both Sha Wujing V Pigsy in 4x06 and Azure V MK in 4x13 (I think this flips towards the end of the fight, with it becoming more like MK V Azure). Each fight pushes one half of the conflict to the "breaking point" (Sandy, Pigsy, MK, then Azure) and in-turn revealing something quite monstrous within each of them. (("What's wrong, isn't this what you wanted?" - "You wanna see a monster, I can show you a monster!" - "Well alright then." - "No, this isn't what I wanted!")
The way Sandy explodes and destroys his own clothing in 2x08 reminds me of how MK does the exact same thing in 4x13 Rip and Tear:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I think some of what Sha Wujing says is easily applicable to all 3 situations:
Sha Wujing: "But you were too weak to be who you truly are! I am a monster! That's what the world wants me to be, so that's what I'm gonna give 'em!" ((Curse MK: "You can't escape it. This thing, whatever you are, embrace it. Embrace your destiny.")) [[The Huntsman: "All it took to bring out the beast was smacking around some of your woodland friends ey?"]]
-
All 3 fights come down to what the attacker wants from the defender (who then turns into an attacker lol). The Huntsman wants Sandy to go berserk out of pure dark curiosity. Sha Wujing wants to "see a monster", want's Pigsy to give him a true fight. Azure wants MK to turn on Wukong and understand why Wukong isn't worth his loyalty. All attackers end up failing, in their own ways.
And I just think it's neat!
I especially think it's super neat that the Huntsman wanted Sandy to be a monster, ("What's wrong, isn't this what you wanted?") but ultimately Sandy proved he wasn't. Sha Wujing in contrast wanted to prove he was a monster, because "that's what the world [wanted him] to be", and almost did before Mo stepped in.
So next season (or just eventually), I really am hoping for some Sandy backstory! I have my OG Sandy is Current Sandy theory, but I'll love anything they give me. Sandy went through some pre-series character development, and I want to know what was and why it was! MK feels like he's currently following in Sandy's footsteps (in a way), so I'm thinkin' Sandy will be instrumental in helping MK with his current Monkey Form conundrums (or at least in my dreams he will be). Sandy's "No!" during 4x13 when MK explodes into his Monkey Form haunts me, and I'm always one to stand in front of my conspiracy board!
Bonus parallel:
Sandy: "Hurting others isn't a measure of one's strength—took me a really long time to realize that. As long as I'm doing something to help out a friend, I don't mind what it is! I just want to be there for 'em when they need me."
(2x08 To Catch A Leaf)
-
MK: “You don’t know! We’d risk it for sure! I won’t abandon them when they need us.”
(4x02 New Adventures)

Very annoying whenever I see "if you think this character was going to have a villain arc then you misunderstood the show and the themes"
Like hey maybe people just like having fun and imagining the catharsis of a sweet and always kind character finally letting herself get mad at people. Maybe you should pull that stick out of your ass.

i really really wish that more soundtracks were unafraid to be a little strange and unusual the way berserk 1997's soundtrack was. it does away entirely with the type of sound you would expect to find on a medieval inspired fantasy world and instead goes hard on the synths and creates some of the most evocative and memorable pieces i've ever heard on a show, songs that really enhance the mood of each scene they're in

lmao also speaking of freudian analysis, how about guts saving casca from rape while depicting his sword as if it's the penetrating object instead
i mentioned guts cutting off wyald's dick in that post the other day, but man i should've reread the actual scene bc this goes a step further, especially as a prelude to the eclipse. like this is not disabusing me of the impression that the eclipse rape is all about cuckolding lol, and that guts' interest in casca is largely predicated on affirming his own masculinity.
cut for topless casca and also being a potentially triggering if non-graphic sexual assault scene obviously
