And is the portrayal of Inej's trauma in the room with us right now?

Changes in S2 of S&B - Pros and Cons
What I liked:
- Mal (as Sturmhond) going to find his own identity independent of Alina
- Alina keeping her powers and continuing her political role
- The consequences of merzost when used to bring Mal back to life
- Inej with a sword- really just her whole relationship with Alina
- Wesper starting as a one-night stand
- Baghra’s death scene. One of the most well-acted in the show so far.
- Matthias’ plot in Hellgate- sweet Fierdan cellmate, beef with Pekka Rollins, and dog-whispering abilities, what’s not to love?
- The whole side quest for the sword, especially Kanej moments and Wylan saving the day, as well as Durast bloodbending and Jesper’s encounter with his mother
- Inej’s brother, who we find exists largely to narratively parallel Jordie. I’m cool with that because it is SUCH a good parallel. “I pray for him. For Jordie.” :(
What I didn’t:
- not including the final battle of Siege and Storm at the Little Palace, white-haired Alina, and all that comes with it
- Making Tolya (aroace) seem to have a crush on Inej. Which may develop into a relationship?? Ew on so many levels.
- Idk how to articulate my exact issue with it, but they handled the “I’ll have you without armor” scene wrong. It always felt more about emotional vulnerability to me, and the show made it seem like Inej wanted to have sex, which book Inej is no where near ready for.
- Overall, I feel that several opportunities to address Inej’s trauma were overlooked
- David died too soon- I see why it was necessary to make Alina a member of the Triumvirate, but I feel like it did a disservice to Genya’s character development
- Nina dropping the pardon on the ground was stupid and she would never

hate to put a downer in the tag but is anyone else majorly disappointed in s&b season 2? it feels like the show was rushing to get to all the "important bits" without giving them the weight and buildup they deserved. they front-loaded the entire plot of Crooked Kingdom and got to the ending of Siege and Storm in, like, episode 2. And that ending... holy shit, that sucked.
No white-hair-Alina, no orphanage happy ending for her and Mal, no mention of Alina's full-ass cult. Does no one remember the girl with suns tattooed on her face??? I do. she was cool. And what the fuck is up with David dying in the assault on the Fold? He wasn't supposed to die until Rule of Wolves, it makes no sense why they pushed his death to this season. They're clearly expecting to get a season 3, based on the ending with the Crows (which is, inexplicably, the hook of the book that came before the one they adapted for this season????) so why would they not expect to play David's death out the way it happened in the book? And, again, why the fuck did they front-load the plot of Crooked Kingdom? Why is Kaz's most famous scene just kind of tossed in the middle of the season with no actual narrative buildup? Why does the show feel like Matthias, of all people, needs to have beef with Pekka Rollins??? Those two characters have exactly nothing to do with each other--iirc, they don't even interact in the books. It feels like the writing team just sat around a table and went "ooh what if" until they wrote enough words to fill in a script. I can't tell if Leigh Bardugo gave all of this her blessing, or if she just looked away too long and they went rogue on her.
(side-note, killing the king and Vasily at the same time wasn't a great choice. the scene in the book where Nikolai looks his not father in the eye and tells him to get out, or he'll be charged for his crimes against Genya is such a good moment of catharsis for her character, and the queen isn't in enough of the show for her little replacement scene to fill that gap.)
And I know I've mentioned this before, but the Darkling's death in the show is robbed of its weight by the way the show treats the name Aleksander. It's tossed around so flippantly that Alina's final extension of respect for him--calling him by the name he had when he was innocent--feels like she's just... saying goodbye. She's using the name he's had this whole time, rather than specifically calling him Aleksander as a show of respect for the dead. The Darkling is supposed to be a tragic character--not likeable by any standard, he's thoroughly and truly the villain of the Grisha Trilogy, but you're supposed to understand that at one point, he was innocent. At one point, he could have done something good. His death is a reminder of that, in the books. In the show, all you really feel is relief that you don't have to listen to his manipulative dialogue anymore.
Honestly, the season doesn't suck. It's not bad (I have some extra gripes about the sound design but that's definitely a budget issue and not really anyone's fault), it's just disappointing. There were some bits I really did like, too!! Every scene with Genya in it was absolutely incredible, the show did her so well. The humour in this season was consistently good. Show-Wylan lives up to his book counterpart very well. And the subplot with the saint in Shu Han was really well-done, even if I do wish the show had kept the original catalyst for Jesper using his Grisha powers. I know the show can do the books justice (the two Nina and Matthias scenes in season 1 that are literally word-for-word accurate come to mind as examples), and I do want there to be a season 3 so I can find out where they're going with all this. I was just expecting better. I'm sure people who haven't read the books, or are more forgiving of "high-budget fan fiction" style adaptations will really enjoy it, and that's not bad by any means.
Idk. I was just hoping for something the show didn't want to give, I guess.

shadow and bone s2 ep8
well all that sure happened, didn't it
-don't at ALL know how i feel about kaz giving nikolai his cane -there are plenty of times kaz walks without it but. idk
-oh i need to talk about wylan. -good for this actor but also. is this.........wylan -wylan is nervous but is he nervous like that??
-'there is no redemption.' yes thank you -i do not remember how the darkling dies in the books it's been a while but i really liked it here
-so does nikolai get away without getting yoinked. oh no he did! alright.
-the thing is. alina SHOULD lose her powers. like i LIKED that ending. it's important bc of the lust for power, bc at the end of the day alina was alina, first and foremost, and there is a cost to everything. the image of her putting her fingers in sunbeams years later is so powerful -OH BUT NOW SHE'S GOT????? SHADOW POWERS?????? AH. I SEE. -MMM. -honestly. an interesting development, i will give you that. that the cost here is her powers swapping
-but mal WAS always more!!! mal was always mal, too!!!!! -but them wanting to know if it's destiny or choice with them, i can respect that, honestly
-YOU KNOW WHAT ALSO BTW. ADRIK CAN SUMMON WITH ONE ARM. HE DIDN'T NEED ANOTHER ARM. MMMMMM
-BUT. KAZ LOOKING FOR INEJ'S PARENTS AND FINDING THEM AND. EVERYTHING. IS THE MOST GORGEOUS ENDING IN CROOKED KINGDOM. IT'S BEAUTIFUL. -THIS? THIS AIN'T IT -said it before i'll say it again. inej didn't need a brother. at all. it doesn't even really parallel jordie bc it's not necessary. it's not needed. at all. for her story to work out, for her and kaz
-we need. way more of kaz and inej quite frankly for this vibe here
-tamar and nadia literally get. two moments. is that not exactly how much they get in the books, too? like there's not really any build up there, if i remember??? you HAD THE SPACE FOR MORE OF THEM HERE TOO YOU KNOW!! GOD!!!!!!
-inej gets on THEIR ship???? not her OWN ship???? it being HER SHIP that KAZ BOUGHT HER was, you know, IMPORTANT
-OH EVERYONE'S JUST GETTING BEEF WITH PEKKA NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! -I WILL KILL A MAN
-THE APPARAT???????????????????????? sigh.
-zoya literally saying 'i could fix him' about nikolai i'm screaming. i do not know if it's in a good way or not -this girl squad though. i'm living for it
-zoya babygirl that crown should be yours though i tell you what
-just. uh. throwing in parem here. really. i see. uh-huh. you just decided to throw that one in last second. -that's an awful lot of blood. yikes fuck off
-kaz and nina and jesper and wylan literally. dregs of the dregs here
-s1 was definitely carried by the crows but s2. i was more interested in alina and mal and i think what they did in spots was really interesting and a good change -but the crows here. it did NOT work out. -not at all. not at all

The construction of Helsinki's Crown Bridges between Laajasalo and Hakaniemi is drawing the attention of Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) readers on Monday.
HS features pictures of the first stages of a 1.2 kilometre-long bridge rising out of the sea between Korkeasaari Zoo and the Laajasalo shore.
The bridge, which will be the longest in Finland, is expected to cost the city some 326 million euros. The project was initially controversial, as the bridge will have tram tracks and space for cyclists, but no road for private cars.
The bridge is due to be completed in 2027.
Passport queues
Hufvudstadsbladet (siirryt toiseen palveluun) visits the Pasila police station in the capital, where it finds people waiting outside for hours for walk-in appointments.
Over the past few months, police departments around the country have reported a substantial uptick in people seeking to renew their passports.
HBL caught up with one mother and daughter who had been waiting in line for 2.5 hours. They had not been able to book an appointment for the coming month.
The police shot back at criticism that they are not doing enough to shorten the post-Covid queues.
"Over the past nine months we've stayed open on the weekends to dismantle the backlog," Helsinki Police chief commissioner Pekka Kallio told HBL.
Ten-euro grocery list
Food costs are growing, so how can you save at the supermarket checkout?
Iltalehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun) picks up on a shopping list posted by a Finnish social worker on Reddit (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
A basket containing rice, chicken, ground beef, potatoes and frozen vegetables came in at just under ten euros in a shopping list shared by Riihimäki deacon Tiina Heiskanen.
She said she compiled the list to show how to make several meals on less than ten euros.
"Parish food grants are small. This sample list allows people to get as much for as little as possible," Heiskanen told IL.

"oh, the darkling is like hades--" NO he's not, kaz is like hades and I am going to tell you why, and it's not just because I don't like the darkling (even tho I don't. but anyway). people just say the darkling is like hades because he's got an emo aesthetic and because they think darkalina are like hades and persephone, which is... mm, beef for another day lmao. but mostly I just thought it would be fun to dig into exactly Why I am so emphatic about why it should be Kaz. also I'm procrastinating and pretending this counts as classics revision
(yes I am OP of that epic iii/kanej comparison post if you've seen that, but I am in fact talking about mythological hades today, though I have plenty of reasons for why hadestown hades is also like kaz) neither of them are a perfect fit obviously, they're three separate characters, but like, if you're going to equate a grishaverse character to hades make it kaz!!!! the parallels are really cool!! there's a lot of them!! this is going to be long as hell (ha ha) so here is a read more;
hades is god of the dead, not god of death (that's thanatos) which is much more appropriate for Kaz, given his... um, rather corpse-filled childhood.
hades rules and overlooks the underworld and kaz, not dislike that, overlooks the criminal underworld of ketterdam as it was lmao, and knows what's going on all the time
this is a fairly tenuous link but I enjoy how water kind of represents suffering in both. the underworld has a load of horrible rivers; Styx (hatred) Acheron (pain) Lethe (forgetfulness, it's not always negatively connotated but you catch my drift) Phlegethon (fire) Cocytus (wailing), and the harbour in Ketterdam is obviously full of Horrible Connotations for Kaz, plus the prominence of the canals throughout Ketterdam. idk I thought it was interesting.
hades (and more so pluto) was also largely the god of riches and wealth which. yeah don't need to explain that one do I. mr 30 million kruge.
hades also likes to come up with elaborate and often pretty ironic punishments for the worst wrongdoers, who pissed him off specifically; people like sisyphus, who dodged death twice and now has the boulder thing forever. like usually if no one causes trouble he doesn't care, but anyone who tried to cheat death or otherwise crossed him,,,, lol have fun with your eternal punishment. similarly, Kaz gets pretty inventive with his punishments (see: Pekka, Oomen, Van Eck) and usually uses something as leverage against them (like Pekka's son and Van Eck's ignorance about the Barrel)
hades quite often gets given a key as a symbol... like I know kaz doesn't use keys and that's the entire point but I enjoy the idea of controlling entrances and exits, that exists in both cases
he also had plenty of euphemistic names bc everyone was too scared to invoke him directly,,, much in the same way as dirtyhands and the bastard of the barrel and whatever else people call Kaz, probably more unsavoury things shjs. Hades had things like Clymenus ("notorious" or "renowned" which sure is... one way of putting it for Kaz's reputation sjs), and the epithet Hades Agesilaos which apparently is difficult to translate directly, but refers to Hades as attracting / calling all people to his underworld empire, which is rather apt to the Barrel's pull to tourists entering Ketterdam hh.
this is a weak link but I find it fun that the only animal Kaz seems to really care for are dogs lmao, which... cerberus... yeah
this is just for fun really but I enjoy the parallels a lot and I have listened to the original epic iii Too Many times this week so!!! have it!! I might do a full epic iii analysis later idk lmao.

Any thoughts on Kaz Brekker (my beloved) so far?
Thoughts? On Kaz Brekker? How about
I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!
Okay I've got two episodes still to go at this moment (gonna finish tonight) but I think we all know I got a thing dark broody bastards and if that doesn't sum up Kaz Brekker I don't know what does 😂 I mean there's so much I'm absolutely loving about Kaz and about the Crows as a whole. I love the mystery behind them (because I haven't read the books and only know what I've read on wikipedia or been told) so things like the beef between Kaz and Pekka Rollins, all of Inej's backstory, Kaz's limp, how the three of them all met and got involved in the Crow Club, all intrigue the hell out of me and I need to know more lol. I love the whole thing they got going on.
Whump wise I love Kaz. Oh my god he's a goldmine. The touch aversion, the limp/leg pain, the very obvious traumatic past, the found family feels. I love Freddy Carter who is a great whump actor. He's very handsome and I enjoy his work here. I love it. I love Kaz. I want more. What if he was injured? Would he accept help despite hating being touched? Shit how would that even go.
I love how Kaz seems like your regular bastard who doesn't care about Inej or Jesper or anything, you think they're just means to an end, but I don't see that at all. I mean yeah he's also kinda a bastard but I also see someone who's been to hell and back and has put up so many walls to protect himself but these two people have crawled their way into his heart and he wants to keep them safe and worries about them but he can't worry about them because if you care about people you get hurt when they get hurt and life is fucking hard and you gotta be tough. So he keeps them back and he keeps his walls up and he keeps his distance as a protective shield.
And he's so smart!!! You can see him analyzing and thinking and it's impressive as hell!! I loved the scene in episode 5 when Kaz ran into the Darkling and he's like backing away cause fuck it's the Darkling but he's smart enough and skilled enough to escape the fucking Cut!!! That's so damn cool!!
I rambled for a bit there but yes, I love Kaz and I'm enjoying learning more about him and seeing more of him. He's such a great character.

did you also feel like kaz in the show was way too ooc and soft?? like they made him a sweetheart lmao and not in a good way
MY DUDE. I have been debating about whether I wanted to share my opinions on this topic on here, but since you asked....!
Disclaimer: I have no beef with anyone who likes the way Kaz was written in the show. We are all allowed to like different things. I also genuinely enjoyed Freddy Carter’s performance and I’ll be pleased to watch him bring this character to life again - I just don’t think the writing did him enough justice in this particular season.
THAT SAID. Yes, this was my single biggest complaint with the show. I know, I live a very privileged life in which this is the thing I get to complain about. AND COMPLAIN I SHALL.
I don’t love that we didn’t get a good set up of this character as the mob boss with the dangerous reputation. I’m not at all happy that we saw him shuddering  and cowering in front of Pekka Rollins right off the bat without first seeing him destroy someone or be a cocky, obnoxious know-it-all. We hardly got any playful Kaz/Inej banter -- it was all intense stares and arguing, which of course they do that, too, but there’s a balance that we didn’t get from the show. I wanted to enjoy their friendship like the writers let us enjoy moments of Mal and Alina’s. And UGH I was genuinely annoyed that he got so vulnerable with Inej this season. Of course it’s what we all want to see! But like, slow burn is successful for a reason. I would have been fine with, like, maybe a moment of vulnerability, followed by Kaz doubling down and pushing her away even further. Something to at least set us up for how he is at the beginning of Six of Crows.
I’m really surprised they didn’t give us any of his backstory, even just in a few flashbacks - that shit is ripe for tv. I think that could have given us the moments of sympathy they wanted us to have for him without making him soft and vulnerable this early on in the game. Honestly, I’m just not even sure the decision to create a new adventure to bring the characters together was even necessary. Game of Thrones proved to us that audiences can handle multiple story arcs that take seasons to cross over. But whatever - it was a creative decision that didn’t *not* work - I still enjoyed it. I’m just not sure it was necessary when there was plenty of really good backstory in the original source material that I think I would have enjoyed more.
I just...can I say this here? Without y’all hating me? Whatever, I’m gonna do it. I just feel like I could have written a better Kaz and Inej.  I know it’s cocky - bite me. I have a degree and over a hundred thousand words of content on these characters. Netflix - just come talk to me next time, k? I’ll get you sorted.

kinda wish they hadn't shown pekka rollins so early in the game tbh - like reading it we hear a lot about him, primarily from kaz, and how terrible he is and idk about y'all but I pictured him maybe a couple years older than kaz max
and then the first time you actually Meet pecca and it turns out this is An Entire Adult that kaz fucking brekker has (totally justifiable) beef with? to wreck his little teenage vengeance on? idk y'all i lost my mind

I don’t have an essay I have a half formed idea but it’s not even half formed I just thought some words and shoved them into your ask box
- grisha spiderverse anon (I just realised calling it into the grishaverse is dumb bc the grishaverse is already technically a thing)
so like multiverse??? does kaz meet himself from another universe. do they have to take down a super beefed up version of pekka rollins (or the darkling). just realized i have no memory of what the hell happens in that movie

“hi, I’m not from the US” ask set 1 through 30 :P
You don’t ask much, do you? :’D Okay, here we go
1. favourite place in your country? Pretty much every place near water. Thankfully we have loads of lakes and woods where to escape.
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad? Abroad, mainly because my “holidays” are always during winter period and I’m a child of green so I much rather go somewhere bit warmer where I can see plants instead of endless piles of snow.
3. does your country have access to sea? Yes we have quite long coast line.
4. favourite dish specific for your country? Most traditional dishes are pretty boring. Anything with smoked fish on it. Or Karelian pies.
5. favourite song in your native language? Oh this is too hard to choose. There’s so many good ones.
6. most hated song in your native language? Again, too many to choose from. I dislike majority of Finnish rap artist so anything from them, and we also have many artists which I think make such whiny music that I can’t stand them.
7. three words from your native language that you like the most? Perkele, meri & rakas (I like the way finns say “r”)
8. do you get confused with other nationalities? if so, which ones and by whom? Probably with other nordic countries. I have been mistaken as Danish quite a lot because of my accent.
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best? Norway, because they have such cool mountains and lot of coast.
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language? Perkele. There’s every essence of Finnish in that word.
11. favourite native writer/poet? A. W. Yrjänä
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem? I don’t think there’s any translations for them so IDK
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders? Finns love free buckets. When new store opens they offer free buckets and people line up to get one. It’s so weird, but people love to do it.
14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV? Not really. I do like our comedy shows because our humor is so dark and sarcastic that it’s hard to capture, so when someone does it right it’s darn funny. But I don’t think there’s not many good Finnish actors and our films are crap.
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?
Tumblr media
16. which stereotype about your country you hate the most and which one you somewhat agree with? Well most of the stereotypes are pretty accurate so I’m not sure do I hate any.
17. are you interested in your country’s history? Yes and no. I’m interested about the old history, but mostly when you say you are interested in Finnish history everyone assume you mean the military history, which I don’t care about one bit.
18. do you speak with a dialect of your native language? I have a mixture of dialects, because my dad is northern so I use some words and emphasis that are different than is usually used in the are I live in. But I think any Finn could tell where I’m from by the way I speak.
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem?  They are both okay. I would much rather have Finlandia Hymni as our national anthem instead Maamme laulu but it’s not up to me.
20. which sport is The Sport in your country? Ice-Hockey!!!
21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be?  Our prime minister and one of his lackeys
22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed? I’m proud we still have so much nature left. I’m ashamed that the government is constantly working on to change that. Also the bigotry and constantly growing separation between well earning people and the poor people.
23. which alcoholic beverage is the favoured one in your country? Majority of people like beer. I can’t drink that so I would stick with Lonkero.
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country? Sweden. We hate Sweden.
25. would you like to come from another place, be born in another country? Hmm. I wish I could live somewhere else, but I’m very pleased I have born and raised here.
26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal? Sometimes. Mostly they portray Finland as very mountainy country which is not true because we don’t have mountains at all except in Lapland. And usually the Finns sound & look more like Russian people than Finns.
27. favourite national celebrity? I have few. I adore our weather man Pekka Pouta, actor/singer/media persona Cristal Snow & actor Antti Holma.
28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites? We are a land of a thousand lakes.
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country? Tampere & Turku have been making fun of each other and having weird competitions for ever. I’m not even sure why.
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family? My aunt is married to a man who’s half English half Greek but no one else other than that. And we don’t even have any contact on them anymore so I guess I shouldn’t even count him in :P

eddies phones: undeletable apps, 31 games, twitter, insta, starbucks lu's phone: undeletable apps, twitter, games eddie makes him download so he can get bonuses but like what other places do they go so often they have usual orders for//kisses everywhere!! juuse kisses where he can see skin and then gets down to business and really goes for it and sooner or later juuse is just slowly taking peks apart with just soft kisses(ahh i've been packing all day and idk if i'm getting everything i need???)
you are damn right with them apps and all that, okay, eddie is a hoarder and then uses lu’s excess phone space to fill in more stuff - although lu’s phone also probably has bank apps and, like, waze to make traveling easier, etc.
dunkin donuts is probably much the same as starbucks - mcdonalds and wendy’s they actually fight over, because mcdonalds makes better fries but wendy’s makes better meals, and eddie loves their lemonade, so they go to wendy’s for one meal and mcdonalds for the other. sometimes eddie springs for a salad but he usually winds up ordering fries along with it anyway, just because he can
taco bell is for extreme cases of withdrawl for eddie, if they’re in a place without taco trucks, and eddie always goes for beef chalupa’s because he cannot be stopped - the man gets like…5 and just consumes them all with a fury
any bar type of place (or club), eddie gravitates towards the tyson barrie end of the spectrum - chocolate margaritas, fruity stuff, all of that. occasionally, if things are getting wild, a dirty girl scout
i’ll let you imagine lu’s reaction to that one
lu, himself, pretty much sticks with beer and shots, but he likes kissing eddie because eddie always tastes so good after he’s been drinking, so sometimes lu just stays sober because he wants to kiss his boyfriend/husband - if they’re not within walking distance of where they’re staying for the night, then of course he takes it upon himself to be the designated driver
pekka letting out these little sighs that slowly turn into little gasps and then whimpers, and then it turns into juuse gently pushing his shirt up a little bit to stroke over his skin, and then the whimpers turn to little whines because he wants more, but juuse’s being so gentle and slow with him
it’s nice and lazy and warm and comfortable, and they just want it to last forever, juuse pulling these noises out of pekka, pekka feeling so good and taken care of - that’s the ideal life for these losers
