#because they’re not art. art is the labor of creation

I was meeting a client at a famous museum’s lounge for lunch (fancy, I know) and had an hour to kill afterwards so I joined the first random docent tour I could find. The woman who took us around was a great-grandmother from the Bronx “back when that was nothing to brag about” and she was doing a talk on alternative mediums within art.
What I thought that meant: telling us about unique sculpture materials and paint mixtures.
What that actually meant: an 84yo woman gingerly holding a beautifully beaded and embroidered dress (apparently from Ukraine and at least 200 years old) and, with tears in her eyes, showing how each individual thread was spun by hand and weaved into place on a cottage floor loom, with bright blue silk embroidery thread and hand-blown beads intricately piercing the work of other labor for days upon days, as the labor of a dozen talented people came together to make something so beautiful for a village girl’s wedding day.
What it also meant: in 1948, a young girl lived in a cramped tenement-like third floor apartment in Manhattan, with a father who had just joined them after not having been allowed to escape through Poland with his pregnant wife nine years earlier. She sits in her father’s lap and watches with wide, quiet eyes as her mother’s deft hands fly across fabric with bright blue silk thread (echoing hands from over a century years earlier). Thread that her mother had salvaged from white embroidery scraps at the tailor’s shop where she worked and spent the last few days carefully dying in the kitchen sink and drying on the roof.
The dress is in the traditional Hungarian fashion and is folded across her mother’s lap: her mother doesn’t had a pattern, but she doesn’t need one to make her daughter’s dress for the fifth grade dance. The dress would end up differing significantly from the pure white, petticoated first communion dresses worn by her daughter’s majority-Catholic classmates, but the young girl would love it all the more for its uniqueness and bright blue thread.
And now, that same young girl (and maybe also the villager from 19th century Ukraine) stands in front of us, trying not to clutch the old fabric too hard as her voice shakes with the emotion of all the love and humanity that is poured into the labor of art. The village girl and the girl in the Bronx were very different people: different centuries, different religions, different ages, and different continents. But the love in the stitches and beads on their dresses was the same. And she tells us that when we look at the labor of art, we don’t just see the work to create that piece - we see the labor of our own creations and the creations of others for us, and the value in something so seemingly frivolous.
But, maybe more importantly, she says that we only admire this piece in a museum because it happened to survive the love of the wearer and those who owned it afterwards, but there have been quite literally billions of small, quiet works of art in billions of small, quiet homes all over the world, for millennia. That your grandmother’s quilt is used as a picnic blanket just as Van Gogh’s works hung in his poor friends’ hallways. That your father’s hand-painted model plane sets are displayed in your parents’ livingroom as Grecian vases are displayed in museums. That your older sister’s engineering drawings in a steady, fine-lined hand are akin to Da Vinci’s scribbles of flying machines.
I don’t think there’s any dramatic conclusions to be drawn from these thoughts - they’ve been echoed by thousands of other people across the centuries. However, if you ever feel bad for spending all of your time sewing, knitting, drawing, building lego sets, or whatever else - especially if you feel like you have to somehow monetize or show off your work online to justify your labor - please know that there’s an 84yo museum docent in the Bronx who would cry simply at the thought of you spending so much effort to quietly create something that’s beautiful to you.

I want to say something about clear communication and objective “listening to understand intended meaning.” But ironically I don’t know if I’ll say it with words that make sense.
Here goes.
When someone says something to you verbally, you take the words they said, the tone they used, the timing, the context of your situation, and all the background knowledge you have of that person in and use that to interpret their meaning. If you’re listening to understand their meaning, instead of listening to hear what you were already looking for before they opened their mouths, but that’s a topic for another post.
Same thing with a book or a movie or even a song (that one’s muddier.) You are supposed to take the words they used, the characters they drew, the facial expressions the actors make, the music timed, and the context you’ve been given, to interpret their meaning. And you’re supposed to do it even more considerately and in even better faith than you would a verbal conversation—because the storyteller isn’t having a spur-of-the-moment chat with you. They took a blank page and agonized and labored over what to create on it, and chose what not to create, to bring you a specific piece of material that was very, very intentional. And beautiful, pleasing, useful, relatable.
There’s a higher level of self-sacrifice in how much a storyteller considered you while communicating (or there should be, and used to be, till storytellers got all “artsy” and started saying idiotic things like “art for art’s sake,” and “you only have to create for yourself,” but again, post for another time.) There should be as much self-sacrifice and willingness to listen to understand intended meaning, even if you don’t like that meaning, in the listener.
Now, here’s what I want to say.
All human communicators, whether it’s your mom on the phone with you verbally or an artist with a painting or a writer and their novel, make communication errors. They say something that’s just a little off, not quite perfectly capturing their “intended meaning.” Then the imperfect human listener also makes mistakes in being objective, even when they’re trying to “listen to understand,” and whatever mistakes-in-communication are there become even more confusing.
BUT.
There is one story and one piece of communication that is 100% perfectly said and perfectly communicates in step with the communicator’s intended meaning. It’s the Bible.
Trusting that this is true about the Bible is it’s own topic. I won’t go into that here. But moving forward on the premise that it is true—
—I was taught exegesis in a book called Grasping God’s Word which is difficult to complete but intensely worth it. Because it will actually not only teach you how to “listen to understand intended meaning” from the ONLY place where that’s of life-or-death importance—but the tools it gives you also would apply to trying to “listen to understand the intended meaning” of all communication.
It puts your brain through exercises specifically intended to work out the muscles that hone what you can know for a fact, about the communicator and reality and how much of that needs to be relevant to interpreting their work, and what you can drop. Plus how to drop your prejudices, your preconceived notions, your experiences, anything that could lead to interpretational error.
It’s necessary to learn those things because if there’s a supreme all-powerful Creator who wants to be in a relationship with you, His creation, and has given you a written Word to explain it all, you better understand what He’s really saying, not just “what you think He might be saying.” If it weren’t so urgent and so necessary to learn how to listen to God with the intent to understand, you know what we’d do?
We’d start saying things like, “well, that’s just your interpretation.” And “there’s no right or wrong.” And “that’s true for you, not true for me.” And then suddenly nobody can communicate anything, because we’re not just applying that “it’s unimportant what the Author meant” to God. We’re applying it to all communicators. Suddenly all that matters is you, you, you. How do you interpret it? What makes it meaningful to you? Nevermind what was actually said—how do you feel about it?
And suddenly, fandom culture.
Basically what I’m saying is, if you study Biblical exegesis, you solve your illiteracy problem. After all, He kind of invented words, communication and listening.

Okay, I’ve started beefing with AI again, so I got some shit to get off my chest. AI bros invading creative spaces and not understanding etiquette and social rules is a huge defining factor as to why there’s friction. A lot of these AI bros think that because a machine did it, that it negates the use of plagiarism. And if you’ve ever been in any creative space for more than a week, you know how much beef is caused by people stealing other people’s work.
“Oh well the machines are advancing, technology is advancing” mf my labor, energy, and concepts are not going to be sacrificed on the alter of your bullshit robots. Dawg, you wrote “make me a fantasy book about ogres” and that robot scoured the internet until it found SOMEONE ELSE’s years of hard work, effort, and time—months and years that they’ll never get back— and repurposed it shoddily for you. Bastardized it completely without any of the thought and nuance of the person who wrote it. You don’t even know who originally wrote what that AI generated because it doesn’t credit them.
These AI bros are selfish and lazy. Like ofc your slothful ass don’t care that the genetic anime girl you AI generated only has 3 fingers, because you don’t have one sense of pride or self worth wrapped up in this. You’re not putting yourself out there when you post AI generated art, you don’t have nothing to prove. You’re not opening yourself to being seen as complete trash and cringe whenever you show the world your art. You don’t even have the disappointment of nobody caring after you poured your heart into a project for years, months, weeks, days, or hours.
Hell, you didn’t even create the AI you’re using so you didn’t learn anything new about coding, or toil with debugging and brick walls. You’re a leech who’s too lazy to produce anything but wants the fruits given to those who truly do make shit.
AI art and writing lacks the humanity and risk of creation. It’s far removed from what makes art art. It removes the AI bro from even making something of their own. Like if somebody self-made their AI and had it for personal use only, it’d still be scummy and stealing but at least they busted their ass and created something that complex. At least the person spent time and effort creating something. Like AI isn’t easy to code, it takes effort just like art does
These AI bros are leeches. They don’t create the software the use, or the art they steal.
Because how can you—somebody who can’t draw, can’t code, isn’t a team member of the AI dev team—“push technology forward”? You’re not doing anything to advance anything, you’re a parasite who merely acts as a tester for software but you don’t implement the changes and do the work of actually translating metadata into the code.
Do not let these people lie to you, or themselves, they’re doing anything remotely productive by stealing peoples’ art and writing.

Hello good morning good night and thanks. Heres ur reading. I went to trader joes today because its the only place where I know true happiness. Then I saw this moomin cartoon that said “I let the small things happen to me and I think they’re tremendous.” And I think that that’s wonderful because it’s truly the small moments that shape us, our reality, and our magical paradigm. I think when I was young I really went after the grander of magic when my most successful and insane experiences were done in much smaller less dramatic ways.
Heres how a small thing will affect you this week.

Love 💕
Venus 1. In Cancer, Chokmah in water
The unity and love in differences. Sometimes you knock heads with differences and sometimes they make you and aspects of you better. Something different that unifies you rather than divides you. A new perspective and voice to shed some light on something you may be stuck on. Something that adds emotional fulfillment. This fulfillment, and unity adds a small bit of divinity of your life.
Princess of Swords 💫
Malkuth, Heh, Princess of the Rushing Winds, Earthy part of Air
The divinity of material things. Not everything is as it seems any anything can be a tool. The keen use of tools with insight and vigilance 😏 (jk) can aid you in the task at hand. Look around see what you have and make the small things work.

King of Cups 🍸
Tiphareth, Vau, Prince of the Chariot of Waters, Airy part of Water, 20° Libra to 20° Scorpio
You know that meme: the artist vs their art. And its like some super cute individual with the most horrific abomination which cannot be comprehended by any mortal brain? (: thats like the vibe. Anyways a big part of this is creation. But think about the ways you create in small ways. Create changes of emotion, art, etc. think about creation in the space around you rather than the space inside of you.
Competition 📍
Venus 3. In Aries, Chesed through fire
Your hard work payed off. Since this is very much based on practice I think this is an indication that you working pulled through and now you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. Make sure to be productive about this to continue becoming better. 🫶

Tl/Dr: I’m taking my art down because of AI and I’m real pissed about it
So because of the whole “tumblr is feeding everyone’s blogs to an AI trainer and you have to manually opt out, but if anyone who hasn’t opted out reposts your content then it will still be fed into the AI” problem I have removed all my art from my page
Im in school, so I can’t take a job right now, which is sad because the AI art protector site i will definitely be using is only available for computers and the mobile app is still in development.
Since I’m on mobile and cant afford any kind of computer I will probably have it down until mid-summer when I can save up money from my summer job
I’ll add a few rants below the cut, but hopefully I’ll be able to share my art sooner than 6 months in the future
Also the art protection website I was talking about is called Glaze!!
So rant: No type of AI should be called “artificial intelligence.” The code isn’t intelligent, the person who wrote it was. I only say AI because Artificial Machinery isn’t a well known term. Personally, I think Ai should be saved for if the machinery gains intelligence and can make it’s own decisions that AREN’T based on facts, what it’s creators want, or what it’s programmed to do.
Show me a robot who prefers pancakes over waffles that has no outside influence other than its own fake tastebuds? Yep, that can qualify as Artificial Intelligence
Show me a robot that likes pancakes over waffles because of a popular vote its creator held or because of statistics/creator bias? That there is nothing but machinery regurgitating human information into my ears
Artificial Machinery: every Ai we have in the current day
Artificial Intelligence: some android named Randy in your cool sci-fi movie set in the year 10,000
Another thing (that probably won’t happen unless an artist is president. For gods sake, there still aren’t laws for child labor I mean family channels)
I wish there was some type of law where AIs made for mushing peoples art together and pretending it made something new was not allowed to use any image that wasn’t made for the AI.
On one hand: AI “art” bro’s would still get the ‘big titty goth anime gf’ they wanted to jack off to but didn’t want to pay for a commission
On the other hand: Actual artist wouldn’t have their creations and plagiarized and rebranded, plus some could actually make money by being hired by whatever company or studio made the AM so they could feed the paid art into it
Obviously this will never come into act while I’m either alive or at the very least can still use my hands
Also I don’t want to hear about the “oh but AI art helps disabled people !!” Just because you want to go from Zero work in art to a perfect human rendition on paper in a day doesn’t mean it helps anyone. Disabled people can still draw, they’re still human, humanity is to make art !!
Sure, maybe it won’t look exactly like that model on the magazine in your dentist office, but that doesn’t make it any less art! Art is expression, expression isn’t typing “cool scene” into a text box and getting 10 other artist’s work mushed together handed to you! Expression doesn’t have to be pretty or copy/paste or the standard, it’s whatever you want it to be. I promise, anyone truly in the art community would value a few stick figures over stolen, fake art.

moving forward: a primer for unlearning (and re-learning) your faith
this resource list is based on the last seven years of my life and the media that helped me, personally, reckon with the christian evangelical upbringing that I had. ofc our life experiences are all going to be vastly different, so the tools that helped me may not help you, but i hope this provides at least a place to start.
NONFICTION
Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith – Kathleen Norris
“It seems clear, from reading the daily news if nothing else, that there will always be some in this world who want their holy wars, who will discriminate, vilify, and even kill in the name of God. They have narrowed down the concept of neighbor to include only those like themselves, in terms of creed, caste, race, sex, or sexual orientation. But there is also much evidence that there are many who know that a neighbor might be anyone at all, and are willing to act on that assumption.”
The Genesis Trilogy (And It Was Good, A Stone for a Pillow, Sold Into Egypt) – Madeline L’Engle
“We can recognize the holy good even while we are achingly, fearfully aware of all that has been done to it through greed and lust for power and blind stupidity. We forget the original good of all creation because of our own destructiveness. The ugly fact that evil can be willed for people by other people, and that the evil comes to pass, does not take away our capacity to will good. There may be many spirits abroad other than the Holy Spirit…but they do not make the Holy Spirit less holy. Our paradoxes and contradictions expand; our openness to God’s revelations to us must also be capable of expansion. Our religion must always be subject to change without notice––our religion, not our faith, but the patterns in which we understand and express our faith.”
The Lost Art of Scripture – Karen Armstrong
“In many ways, we seem to be losing the art of scripture in the modern world. Instead of reading it to achieve transformation, we use it to confirm our own views––either that our religion is right and that of our enemies wrong, or, in the case of sceptics, that religion is unworthy of serious consideration…because its creation myths do not concur with recent scientific discoveries, militant atheists have condemned the Bible as a pack of lies, while Christian funadmentalists have developed a “creation science” claiming that the book of Genesis is scientifically sound in every detail.”
Telling the Truth: The Gospel as Tragedy, Comedy, and Fairy Tale – Frederick Buechner
“For reasons of his own God hides himself from us, but however you account for it, he is often more conspicuous by his absence than by his presence, and his absence is much of what we labor under and are heavy-laden by. Just as sacramental theology speaks of a doctrine of the Real Presence, maybe it should speak also of a doctrine of the Real Absence because absence can be sacramental, too, a door left open, a chamber of the heart kept ready and waiting.”
American Harvest – Marie Mutsuki Mockett
“A writer friend once said to me than in intimacy with another person we build a world. When we lose that person––when they leave us––we lose that beautiful world. This is why breakups can be so devastating and why the death of a beloved is so shattering. It must be like this for someone raised to believe that the house in which they live––the house of God––is stable, only to start to see it as only a mirage. A simulator. How terrifying it is to doubt, to risk losing the entire world.”
FICTION
Gilead –  Marylinne Robinson
“So my advice is this––don’t look for proofs. Don’t bother with them at all. They are never sufficient to the question, and they’re always a little impertinent, I think, because they claim for God a place within our conceptual grasp…I’m not saying never doubt or question. The Lord gave you a mind so that you would make honest use of it. I’m saying you must be sure that the doubts and questions are your own, not, so to speak, the mustache and walking stick that happen to be the fashion of any particular moment.”
Transcendent Kingdom – Yaa Gyasi
“At times, my life now feels so at odds with the religious teaching of my childhood that I wonder what the little girl I once was would think of the woman I’ve become…but the truth is I haven’t much changed. I still have so many of the same questions, like ‘Do we have control over our thoughts?’, but I am looking for a different way to answer them. I am looking for new names for old feelings. My soul is still my soul, even if I rarely call it that.”
POETRY
Mary Oliver - Whistling Swans - Franz Marc’s Blue Horses - Drifting - The World I Live In
Christian Wiman – All My Friends are Finding New Beliefs

Where Do We Go From Here - S3 Ep. 97, “The Quest for Desire” - S3 Ep. 64  “Biblical Womanhood Was Always Cultural Womanhood” - S2 Ep. 23, “Why We Need Touch” - S2 Ep. 22  “I wasn’t Straight, but I Also Wasn’t Gay” - S2 Ep. 17  “Sex is for Wives, Too”

I think the god of love would be a craftsman since one of humanity’s near constant phenomenon in cultures is gift giving (specifically for courting but applies for friendship as well)
The joy of creation is brought by the fact that once they’re done, it will be given to someone as a declaration of the connection.
they sit with dozens of beads, some made of glass from the sea and others formed from the trees. They start by tying a knot at the end of the string, then they carefully sift out every bead. Placing it onto the string as they think about who will be the recipient.
The quality of the art cannot be dictated by the beads themselves. It is only dictated by the thoughts that were put into it.
Each bead slides from one after another until there no more room for any more.
They tie the ends of the string, marking it as complete.
then they start again with a new string.
The god of love knows many skills. Gardening, countless trades, cooking, animal care.
All of these their siblings are in charge of for the reason that humans found them to be important in life.
They shouldn’t know all of these things but they do. They aren’t the best at them, at least compared to the sibling in charged of the skill.
The reason why?
It’s because humanity learned, then make, then they shared it with each other. Recipes are passed down from parents to children, sometimes close friends. Some spent years cultivating a single plant only to share the fruits of their labor. Which then spreads all over, long pass their life.

People who defend machine learning stealing from creators have to be corporate shills, right? It’s literally just enabling corporations to zero-effort screw over small artists and writers. It’s an attempt to shake-and-bake art and literature like we do with marvel movies. Why the fuck would anyone defend that on the art website??
I think there are a fair number of anti-capitalists who have fair reservations about copyright laws. But I think a lot of people have only been exposed to the flaws of copyright law, like the silliness with Sherlock Holmes displaying emotions in screen adaptations, without understanding that copyright and IP law is one of the two most fundamental protections for artists (the other being free speech). Without copyright law, corporations can freely use and misuse artiste’s work with no control by the artist, or compensation for the artist.
And in luxury-gay-space-communism artists wouldn’t need to be compensated with money for their work bc their needs would already be met, right? (I know I’m being a little tongue in cheek, but I do actively want a world where everyone has their needs met) But advocating for change that is going to harm artists right now in the world we have because the attacked law would be a hindrance in that better world is not the most effective tactic.
I think too that there is an understandable grievance for people who work on develop machine learning, generative AI, LLM’s and other technologies in this area because there is a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about how AI works. It becomes really frustrating when people want to legislate your life’s work out of existence because of very cerebral takes on what is or isn’t art. However that grievance being understandable doesn’t make it valid.
And also corporate vampires are actively pursuing LLM’s because they want to automate artists out of the process. Part of this is because they don’t want to have to pay labor costs for the artists. The other part is that corporations want total control over their brand. It can be really tough for WB when JK Rowling goes off on a transphobic screed and cuts into their profit margins, and they. Can’t do anything about it because of copyright law. (I am in no way endorsing JK here, I’m just pointing out one reason corporations don’t want artists to control their own copyright).
So like, when people defend AI against copyright law, without understanding or actively working against the way AI is being used to further separate people from artistic creation and distribution, they’re causing real harm to artistic communities (whether in film, digital, literature, or anywhere else).
And I think this is part of the experience, if you are part of the problem, but want to be not part of the problem without changing your actions or views, you have to make someone else the problem.

Desperate to survive, and hellbent on vengeance, a mortally wounded Dr. William Birkin injects himself with the fruits of his dedicated-- nay obsessive labor. The G virus was flawed however, while healing his injuries as expected, it quickly began to mutate out of control as the virus began to take over both his body and mind... Survival was not something thought possible, but at great cost the impossible can be achieved...
8 years later, William works alongside Rebecca Chambers as a fellow researcher, seeking to unlock the secrets of the recently discovered uroboros virus coming in from Africa. While the higher ups aren’t particularly thrilled about having William remotely anywhere near a virology lab, let alone out of prison, they’re well aware he’s likely the only man who has any chance of helping them with a breakthrough.
---
This Au primarily focuses on William Birkin and the hypothetical thought ‘what if Birkin had somehow managed to survive the G virus?’. While set primarily between the 4th and 5th Resident Evil games, prior events both before and during the Raccoon City infection may be explored. Similarly, other characters and their relations, such as Hunk and Kevin Ryman, may also be explored.
More information including tags and character information can be found under the ‘keep reading’.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#Memento-Mortuorum - Blog tag, functions primarily so others can find it by using the tumblr search.
#Unlikely Survival Au - Au tag, this is the tag that content relating to the au will be tagged under.
#My Creation - The art tag! This is where artwork goes.
#Radio Noise - Ooc / mun speaking tag, generally used for misc. posts in which I may begin to just ramble about things whether it be updates, off topic chatter, or headcanon word vomit.
#Incoming Transmission - the ask tag, this tag will be used whenever an ask is answered.
#Character Profiles; [ character name ] - A tag used specifically for various posts involving a characters profile; headcanons, and various other tidbits of information. In play, it would look something like #Character Profiles; Rebecca Chambers.
#Resident Evil - Tag merely identifying what fandom / media the content relates to. Self explanatory, but here because somebody is ultimately going to ask.
Character Tags - Character tags will be used to identify and track various characters. All character tags will be labeled as the characters name; I.E anything involving Leon would be tagged using the tag #Leon S. Kennedy, William under #William Birkin, Hunk under #Hunk, etc. There may be small exceptions to this when dealing to specific groups of characters like the various USS squads in which case they’ll be tagged under something akin to #USS Alpha Team.
Other tags may be needed over time should the need arise.
Helpful Tips:
Demigods can have one talent or ability influenced by their godly ancestor's domain. You can choose any ability you like as long as it clearly relates. For instance, a child of god associated with love or beauty may be able to change their appearance or be able to charm/persuade people to do their bidding. A child of a youth deity may age slowly and have a longer than average lifespan. Remember, since the gods stopped appearing in the mortal world powers have been weakened, any godly talent or ability should have clear limitations.
You do not have to play the direct child of a god. You can choose to play a child of two demigods or someone who has demigod ancestry. Remember, though, that you may only have one ability from one god and that the further removed your character is from their divine ancestor, the weaker their ability will be. You may choose a god from any pantheon but please be respectful of cultures as you're building your characters. Keep in mind that deities of marriage and deities known as "maiden" or "virgin" gods would not have demigod children.
How AI software will change architecture and design
AI text-to-image software like Midjourney, DALL-E and Stable Diffusion has the potential to change the way that architects approach the creation and concept stages of designing buildings and products, experts say.
In the past year, numerous technology companies have released software that uses AI systems called neural networks to convert users' text inputs into AI-generated images.
The images created by these bots – including eerily real-looking imaginary buildings – have become an internet sensation and led to discussions about how they could impact the future of design and architecture.
Tumblr media
Andrew Kudless creates architectural images on Midjourney
Bill Cusick is the creative director at one such company, Stability AI – which has released text-to-image software called Stable Diffusion and Dream Studio – and also previously worked at the popular visualisation company Midjourney. He believes that the software is "the foundation for the future of creativity".
"I'm seeing a sort of playfulness in design that I don't think we've ever seen before in terms of architectural design and renderings," he told Dezeen.
However, future applications of the technology are still up for debate, even among designers known for using it.
"It's meant to capture a vision of a project quickly"
Andrew Kudless, who works under the moniker Matys Design, said the technology may come to be essential in the early stages of projects, taking the place of sketching and idea creation.
Like architectural sketches, AI imagery is often colourful and dreamlike, but not necessarily actionable as a detailed plan, he explained.
"Whenever I'm sketching with a pencil, I don't worry if the column or whatever is in exactly the right place," Kudless told Dezeen.
"Because that's not the goal of a sketch. It's not meant to be incredibly accurate or precise. It's meant to capture a vision of a project quickly."
Tumblr media
Stability AI can be used for the architectural sketching phase
Indian designer and Midjourney user Manas Bhatia, who creates conceptual art showing futuristic cityscapes that depict complex integrations of structures and nature, agreed.
"AI has a huge potential in solving the 'thought-to-execution delay'," he told Dezeen.
"Currently, we are witnessing designers and creative professionals use AI for concept generation purposes, but with time AI will become an important part of the overall design process."
AI can reduce "thought-to-execution delay"
A trained architect, Kudless works in Midjourney to create evocative structures – often draped in fabric – that he believes show how material and scenery not typically included in initial architectural plans can change the way that projects are presented to clients.
Architecture studios are currently often awarded projects based on renderings that are expected to bear as close a resemblance as possible to the building eventually constructed.
"I think we should be showing [clients] renderings almost from day one, and getting them used to the fact that they're going to change," he said.
"That's actually a better thing for the relationship between the client and the designer because it engages them in the process in a way that's really important."
Tumblr media
Manah Bhata uses Midjourney to create images that show nature blended with architecture
Designers acknowledged that the software has the potential to change the way in which labour is executed in architecture and design offices.
"It's incredibly frustrating at times the amount of labor that especially younger people are being asked to do within firms to produce [render] images," said Kudless.
"And I think if we can automate some of that and still gain control, then I'm all for that."
"This isn't going to upend anything"
He added that some more menial tasks like repeats for offices and parking lots – designs that take simple patterns and repeat them in different instances – could be helpful in augmenting the design process.
Cusick agreed that the technology, which produces its images by taking established aesthetic and formal concepts and mixing them in imaginative ways, creates huge potential for freeing up labour at the early design stages.
"It has become about the magic of combining styles that are totally opposite, taking different styles and combining them, taking different architects and using multiple different architects as references," said Cusick.
Tumblr media
But Kudless believes that text-to-image software is more of a powerful tool than a replacement for architects, as it still requires a user with knowledge and skill to produce useful results.
"It's not unguided like natural selection," he said. "This isn't going to upend anything."
When working with the tools, designers often create hundreds or thousands of images that they then need to sort through and edit manually.
Tumblr media
Interior design could be the next step for AI images. Image generated by Stability AI
Though the AI systems register the text typed in order to generate images, they do not understand language as humans do, often focusing on secondary nouns and adjectives or misunderstanding context.
Choosing the right words to create something valuable therefore requires finesse.
"The software is a tool that needs a human counterpart to function," explained Bhatia, who creates conceptual art showing futuristic cityscapes that depict complex integrations of structures and nature.
"AI generates images based on the designer's idea that is fed in the form of text, and that idea will change from one user to another."
Cusick likened the software to chess, in that it takes a short amount of time to learn but decades to master.
"It cannot perceive the dynamic user"
The use of AI for design extends beyond architecture. Cusick said that interior design solutions have shown a lot of promise on his firm's platform.
Industrial design, too, has made inroads through the use of text-to-image software.
American designer Dan Harden of industrial design company Whipsaw said that AI is "gradually" entering industrial design but is "still primitive".
"Unlike digital design, where AI is integrated within a common software platform, product hardware design is different," he said.
"The three-dimensional aspects of a product and its relationship to its user and its environment present exponential challenges for AI, mostly because it cannot perceive the dynamic user interaction nuances within the physical world in which a product resides."
Tumblr media
An interior architecture image generated by Stability AI
"Perhaps most importantly," Harden continued. "The actual design process is hard to replicate using ADI. It lacks 'embodied cognition' which reasons that a living creature's physical presence has bearing on how it thinks, and that the mind is not only connected to the body, but that the body influences the mind."
But Harden believes that as AI design progresses, it will get closer and closer to these embodied principles.
Kudless agreed, arguing that further advancements in text-to-image technology may have more and more noticeable impacts on designers – though he believes that AI software programs are more likely to prioritise art, animation and cinema.
He said that the next big step in software development would be AI that can output 3D visualisations or videos from text prompts.
"Once this gets into video, for me, it's going to change a lot of professions," he said.
According to Cusick, Stable Diffusion is already working hard at implementing 3D processes for their platforms, and voice-to-image and image-to-image capabilities are other potentials for the technology that may soon be widely used.
"We're working on it as fast as we can," he said, adding that 3D processing was a "completely different animal" to 2D generation.
"We have a couple of different approaches that we're working on. It's a top priority."
Tendencies towards bias
One of the biggest problems with text-to-image technology is their tendency to bias, caused by their use of pools of existing images to produce new visualisations.
According to Kudless, certain architectural styles are overrepresented, as well as digitally generated images as opposed to real photography.
Kudless used the analogy of classic education, saying that teachers can create biases by focusing on one architect or style and ignoring others.
Tumblr media
"We need to make sure that [the software] has enough data to not just have this inbred kind of feedback loop where it's only getting better at things that we're asking for," he said.
Cusick told Dezeen that people in the field have been considering this potential and that image-to-image processes – which would allow architects to input a variety of different styles via an image to create a synthetic mixture – can help to mitigate biases in the neural networks or bodies of images and text fed into the programs.
"We're talking about developing cultural models that can capture as much cultural data as any given country would be willing to give," he said, adding that Stable Diffusion is having discussions about creating culture-specific neural networks.
Tumblr media
"The idea is to make people think of a future where architecture co-exists with nature." Image generated on Midjourney by Manas Bhatia
Despite cultural biases, designers like Bhatia believe that technology can bridge the gap between the human and the natural by showing buildings with natural attributes – such as the form of a tree – that AI can capture with a high degree of detail.
"The idea is to make people think of a future where architecture co-exists with nature," said Bhatia.
"With the immense amount of research going on in building materials and technology, I am sure we can bring architecture closer to nature."
Kudless is more sceptical about the utopian visions associated with technology.
"Culture will always be full of biases and we're never going to reach this point of a utopian society," he said. "It's just a mirror and I think it helps us understand ourselves better."
The co-founders of furniture sourcing platform Clippings recently said they believe that artificial intelligence will "empower designers".
Other people using the technology include architecture critic Oliver Wainwright, who has created a speculative proposal for the Serpentine Pavilion using DALL-E.
How To Make An Air-Conditioned Shed
Tumblr media
A well-ventilated shed is a great thing! Do you have an outdoor shed that houses your garden tools and barbecue grills? Maybe you've made it into a storage space in which you can store your old photographs as well as electronic devices and paints. Yes, sheds are an excellent storage space however that's not all they can provide. According to your needs, a shed can be used for a grow room as well as a study space, office as well as a guest room, art or reading area, or just a place to unwind and relax with your friends. The process of making your shed a livable space doesn't only consist of clearing out clutter and focusing on design. You must take note of the outdoor weather since the majority of sheds aren't well-insulated and lack sufficient cooling or heating systems. They are therefore significantly affected by extreme climate conditions. The intense sun in summer can make it scorching hot and it can get extremely cold in winter. This means that you don't will be able to enjoy a pleasant moment in your new shed. How do you create a space that is comfortable and enjoyable to spend time in? Installing an HVAC unit or air conditioning within your building is crucial.
How Do You Air condition Sheds: Small AC Units for Sheds
Most sheds are situated at an in-between location from your home and are not connected with the main HVAC system. It's an enormous hassle to connect them and not forget the cost of labor. If this is the case, your best choice is installing ductless AC units, mini-splits, as well as portable AC. They do not need long installation times as central air conditioning does and therefore are ideal to cool the shed. Furthermore, the ductless heat pump can offer cooling and heating and are ideal for all-year-round relaxation. However, you can reduce your AC costs easily in several ways. 1. Ductless Mini-Split AC for Sheds If you're looking for the perfect AC unit for your shed that is efficient, compact, and doesn't require a complete remodel A mini-split is the ideal option. Mini-split air conditioners that are ductless have two units. Indoor units circulate cooler air within your shed while outside unit expels hot, stagnant air. Installation involves drilling a hole of three inches in the wall, to connect two units. Mini-splits are energy efficient because they pump air directly across the targeted zone, which eliminates the loss of heat. They are also quieter than other models and are a great plus feature, especially when you are using the shed to relax or for working. While mini-splits cost more than other alternatives their sophisticated features will make them more affordable in the long run. 2. Through the Wall Conditioners for Sheds The wall-mounted air conditioning units are a typical view in any room as they provide the appropriate amount of comfort for a tiny space. They're pretty much like window ACs and you could choose one in the event that your shed is without windows. They're a great option to replace window ACs if your plan is to use windows to ventilate or aren't looking to block out the view. Through-the-wall-AC can be installed on an exterior wall. It requires the creation of an opening large enough to accommodate the unit inside the wall. It's more energy-efficient than windows because of the way it is installed. Cool/hot air tends to escape from the leaks and gaps in the window, while this is not often the case with through-the-wall-ACs. It could be similar or slightly more expensive over the unit for windows so in terms of cost. If you opt for an installation by a professional, it's likely to cost more since it will require drilling holes into the wall. Another disadvantage is that the opening requires an adequate amount of insulation. Otherwise, your shed that is air-conditioned is open to the drafts. If you can take care of these issues, it could be a good alternative to your garden.
How to control the moisture in your shed?
Tumblr media
Alongside improving the quality of indoor air and insulation, controlling moisture is crucial to ensure that your shed is useful. It helps prevent mold growth as well as improves the insulation and improves the efficiency of your air cooling. In excess, moisture creates a feeling of discomfort and stickiness and makes spending time in the shed nearly unbearable. Additionally, it may cause allergy symptoms, trigger nasal congestion and can make asthma symptoms more severe. Even if you use the shed solely for storage the humidity can cause damage to your belongings. To prevent any harm, think about: Installing storm Doors and Windows- These can reduce the amount of condensation that forms on these surfaces by keeping moisture out. Ventilation is a great way to maintain the flow of air in the shed. It is possible to open the windows or doors at night to let cool air circulate. Utilizing a dehumidifier is the most efficient way to get the ideal humidity levels. You can make it smart by connecting it to smart thermostats or AC controllers to automate the control. Installing an air conditioner Because ACs are able to cool the air while taking moisture away, it is also effective in the control of moisture. But, remember that it can't eliminate enough humidity in the air, which can keep your shed cool in areas with high humidity. Whatever way you intend to use your shed the addition of a cooling or heating device lets you have an enjoyable area all year round. Make sure to control your shed's air conditioning with the latest climate control devices. Read the full article
hi! i'm a beginner artist and i absolutely love your art style, so could you maybe give some tips? I try to draw everyday, but i'm not seeing much of a difference. maybe it's something wrong with my process?
It’s..... it’s love...?
In all seriousness, I’m not really sure what to tell you..!! Different methods work for different folks, so no concrete solution exists, but I can tell you of my personal experiences at least?
It’s love. Drawing everyday is very good, I think, but I think loving what you’re drawing is also very good... For an example scenario, I love Aether, right? I love Aether so I want to draw him. I love Aether so I want to draw him well. I think Aether is pretty (because I love him) so his features are also pretty, like nice slender fingers or fluffy hair or nice legs... So I learned how to draw nice slender fingers and fluffy hair and nice legs, because Aether has them and I like that about him!
I think Aether should wear nice things (because I love him). I think pretty outfits are nice! So I draw Aether in pretty outfits. And thus, I learned how to draw different kinds of clothes, like frilly skirts and fancy shoes and shiny accessories. And I think that Aether should have people who love him, so I learned to draw Xiao. I think Aether should have a nice world to live in, so I make my weirdly detailed AU world settings...
In short, I got better(?) at drawing because I loved my creations, and I wanted better for them! I think it also helps to draw your creations like they’re alive! Like, he’s not just... standing there, he forgot what he came into the room for and now he’s zoning out, put some life into it! You learn... a lot about how to draw things when there’s a story to it, I think...
Like most things, drawing is an expression of the heart, isn’t it? Even if you don’t love your creation, you have spent time and thought on it. You thought about your strokes and your colors, how this part needs to be erased or that section should be edited, and it ends up a labor of love in the end anyways! A work that moment’s “you” created.
Besides, how do you judge “getting better”? For me, it’s when my creations grow up well. For you, it might be when you get closer to drawing how you want to draw. Take it at your own pace, have fun with it, draw with love! That’s about all I can say, sorry it wasn’t anything helpful...!!
#anonymous#mod talks#of course the person with the three yandere blogs answers with [it's love!!!]#i draw a lot of comics and stories so that also helps?#when you're trying to figure out how to spice up panels--you learn how to draw different camera angles!#when you want to express something without words in a scene--you learn expressions and body language!#when you want to tell details about a character without an info dump--you learn character design..#....i only learned all of that because i was always wanting to make my daydreams come true...#i really do love my creations... even the ones from years and years ago#i can see the way i used to think and how i used to feel at that time... that moment's [me]!#i'm glad that person is still here somehow. it would be lonely if i couldn't remember the old me after all!#drawing's really amazing.. i'm not that great at it either--but i've made myself happy with my works--and lots of others too!#so i think i'm doing pretty good! i'd like to draw lots of things from here on out too#--anyways i'm this sort of person so that's why i run three wholesome(??) yandere blogs and two of them are harems...#:^))) it's love.... the answer is love......... i do it out of love.......... for love...... by love.....................#jokes aside. i need to do posts on the other blogs but my formatting in my drafts is NOT up to par lately so i'm. puzzling things out#i've been doing short comics like a test run of sorts but??? hm. more testing needed maybe
Hey there Chekhov. I just want to ask for some advice from you because you seem like a wise person. So I asked another creator if his AU series was done (as in not being continued, or cancelled like a tv show). The reason I asked that is because he hasn’t posted his comic in a while. But when I asked him, he thought I meant if he was finished with the next comic and thought I was being rude and impatient. I tried to clear it up with him but he still doesn’t believe me. Any advice for this in case it happens again.
Eeergh... This is a tough one, because I think it’s less about wisdom and more about just... understanding that sometimes, human communication is difficult.
You may have not meant much by it, but artists and authors are often stressed and extremely worn out, socially speaking, and tend to snap more easily because they assume someone is just trying to bully them into creating more content for free. (Because this happens.... a lot.)
Tumblr media
(I’m... also guilty of being distrustful and sometimes also get quite vicious because of it.)
There’s two things at play here:
1) How much effort did you put into making sure your message did not sound demanding or rude?
and
2) How much effort did the artist put into assuming you had good intentions?
... I know I need to work on the second one, and I’m legitimately trying. But sometimes it gets hard.
Why does it get hard? Well..
It is a truth universally acknowledged that any creator on any social media platform usually has at LEAST 10 messages in their inbox that read something akin to the following:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Etc, ad infinitum.
Now, you might think ‘okay, so what? People want to read their comic, of course they would do this.’
Except that they’re not just expressing joy at reading the comic - they are doing the equivalent of tugging on the artist’s shirt at the grocery store and going “Mom, can we get candy? Mom. Mom. MOOOM. Hey, I want candy. Mom, buy me candy. Mommmm I hate you! You never buy me anything!! Buy me candy now!!”
Which, as you can imagine, gets... depressing.
How would YOU react if you received these messages daily?
Would you have a lot of patience left?
Artists are incredibly overworked. They do most of their work for free. They don’t get paid often - they are just trying to put free art out into the world. And what do they get?
They get treated like they’re customer service reps. People don’t take the time to make sure their messages even sound appreciative or like they’re talking to a human being. It’s usually just
“Give comic, now.” “Where comic?” “When comic done?”
So I suppose my question for you would be... what did YOUR message sound like?
How long did it take you to write it? Did you tell the artist you were appreciative of their free labor? Did you explain WHY you wanted to check up on them? Did you use humanizing words like “hey, I really like your work.” or “I noticed you were gone for a while” and “I was wondering if you still planned to work on this story, because I really enjoy it” or “Just checking in to see if you are planning to finish the series? I’m really looking forward to it!”
Or... did you just type in
 “is the series done?”
and, without taking a second to think about how it would come across, simply hit enter on your keyboard?
Look, I get it. Thinking about how your words come across is HARD. And not all of us are good at it - in fact, most of us are pretty horrible as a baseline! We learn to communicate kindly by fostering that habit. I teach elementary school kids and let me tell you - most people learn how to be humane in their late teens at best.
But if you don’t put a lot of effort into how you communicate with people, if you don’t go the extra mile to at least throw in a few kind words, you can’t really expect them to put in an extra amount of effort to assume you mean well! They only know what they face every day - and that is an incredible amount of people who treat them like Content Creation Robots.
They can’t possibly know that you mean well and appreciate them unless you TELL them!
In other words - you reap what you sow.
I will say this - your comic creator probably regrets lashing out at you.
It’s likely that he was tired, that he felt downtrodden and disappointed in himself for not posting faster. It’s probable that he is hard on himself for not being able to work on his creation mor, and your words hit a nerve and made him feel like he was not doing enough. And his anger wasn’t so much about the ‘misunderstanding’ as it is about him being treated with too little kindness.
What I can recommend to both of you is - sometimes, this shit happens. And the only way to fix it is to take a deep breath and try to be kind to each other, even when it’s hard. It’s really the only way forward.
