Nose To Nose.
Joey and Bat Sanctuary, Beveridge, Victoria, Australia.
Lit by natural light, a veterinary student cradles and nuzzles a newly rescued, four-month-old common wombat (Vombatus ursinus) named Maude. Baby wombats, with their highly sensitive noses, especially appreciate such close contact. Despite their name, the number of wombats like Maude are on the decline, making this tender photo an even starker reminder of our greater role in their species’ survival.
Douglas Gimesy (Brighton, Victoria, Australia) is a professional conservation and wildlife photojournalist whose clients include National Geographic, BBC Wildlife, The Smithsonian, Australian Geographic, as well various mastheads like The Guardian. Initially earning a B.Sc. in zoology and microbiology, he later completed a Masters of Environment and a Masters of Bioethics. Together, these two qualifications helped shape his thinking about which issues to focus on and why—he is now devoted to conservation and animal welfare issues in his homeland and, among other projects, is now creating a children’s book that covers all of Australia's mainland flying foxes.

After the encounter in the grocery store, Alice goes home and does something she never thought she would.
CHAPTER 3
It was embarrassing how long she sat there that night, waiting by the phone for his call. She could’ve sworn her cheek had an imprint from resting it on her hand.
When she got home from the store and put her groceries away, she set up her table so she could sit by the phone and wait. She placed her takeout on the table and practically inhaled it, but chose to leave the containers on the table for a bit, not wanting to risk it. She must’ve seemed crazy, but she could hardly care. There was something so exciting about this man, whether it was how little she truly knew about him or it was the idea that she could possibly have something her sister’s had for the last six years - hell, Eleanor had been with Julian for much longer than that.
The first time the phone rang it was her mother.
“Hello?” Alice asked, trying her best to not sound too excited.
“Alice, sweetie, you’re finally home! I was wondering if you’d ever pick up my calls.” She couldn’t help but let her expression drop.
“Oh, hi mom.” There was a scoff on the other end.
“That’s all I get? Oh hi mom. What’s the matter, did something happen? Did Eleanor do something?”
“No, mom, sorry. I was waiting on an important call and I thought you were them.” She explained simply. She wouldn’t tell her it was over a guy, then she’d never hear the end of it and if he didn’t follow through…
“Oh, I’m sorry. If you don’t mind me asking, who were you waiting for?” She was catching on, but Alice had a talent for lying without a second thought.
“A sanctuary. One of the little fellas from San Antonio was getting transferred to one and they’re supposed to call me.” Her mother hummed and gave a small “ah.” She could feel the disappointment, and part of her worried about what she had to say next.
“You work so hard…”
“I know.”
“Even when you’re home you’re waiting on updates…” Alice let out a sigh.
“I know, mom.” She shouldn’t have sounded so ashamed, she was simply dedicated to the animals she worked with. Arguably that was the best thing she could do as a biologist.
“I just don’t want you to throw your life away, Alice. I mean look at Ellie, she’s settled down and…”
“Hang on mom, I’m getting another call.” She wouldn’t be surprised if her mother saw her rolling her eyes. With a brief objection, Alice hung up, feeling that familiar dissatisfaction and near jealousy build up within her. It was an awful feeling that tingled in her fingers and stung her eyes, and it made her want to throw her phone across the room.
Alice loved her mother - she truly did - but every time she compared her to Eleanor, things got a bit rocky. It happened often, and she often wondered if it was because her mother was from a less progressive time than her own. It made sense, after all her mother never seemed to take Alice’s passions seriously, and when she finally left to study bats in Australia she felt the slight disdain.
After all, her youngest daughter wasn’t in a relationship yet, unlike Eleanor, and she just spent several years in school. There were people who came and went, people she didn’t let anyone know about, but she didn’t see how that was any of their business. Her main goal was to become a chiropterologist, so that’s what she did.
Since then, she’s been to Australia, the Philippines, Germany, and she had studied bats in closer places like Texas and New Mexico. She had seen more of the world than her mother ever had, but all she could focus on was how Alice didn’t have a rich husband like her older sister did.
It hurt. It hurt bad.
Luckily, William served as a perfect distraction. Maybe that’s another reason she liked him so much, not only was he mysterious and seemingly interested, but he kept her mind off of the shitstorm that had been brewing in her family since she came back from Texas.
Her eyes drifted back to the phone, and she waited.
His call never came.
The phone did ring a few times, but she couldn’t be bothered with answering after her mother’s call. She figured if he did call, she’d catch him when he was leaving a voicemail. The second time the phone rang, it was Veronica again, begging her to go out because Charlie left her and she needed a distraction. Alice wasn’t in the room for this call, but if she was she knew she would be fine. Veronica always thought people were leaving her, which Alice wasn’t, she just couldn’t emotionally support her old friend at the moment. She hoped she would call Mary or Rebecca, though Alice couldn’t help but wonder if Charlie had actually told Veronica that he was leaving her.
The third time the phone went off it was her mother again. She was asleep by that point, though - choosing to sleep away her disappointment.
It was odd, to say the least. Looking back on it, she didn’t expect him to call that night, but she couldn’t help but feel a bit crushed over the fact he didn’t call. It only got worse when he didn’t call the next day, or the day after that. She wondered if she did something wrong, or if she pressured him and he didn’t say anything. She knew she was being too forward and she wished he would’ve just turned her down instead of letting her think she stood a chance.
What was even stranger was the fact that she hardly saw him at all in the places she expected to. The stores were filled with people she didn’t recognize, and the streets were the same. Her mind was telling her to let it go, that there would be others and that she was acting crazy, but the other part of her was too hooked on the mystery to let him go. She’d hardly spoken to him but there was something about him that kept her hooked - it kept her wanting to know more about him.
She did, however, know that she wouldn’t go near the pizzeria. That would be crossing a line into borderline stalker behavior and she wasn’t that kind of girl (or that desperate). Yet, despite all of the drama between her and her family and her lackluster love life, something didn’t feel right.
All weekend she felt not only disappointed, but there was a familiar uneasy feeling. It was a feeling she’d often felt in the deep, dark caves of Texas - it was the unsettling feeling she felt in the pizzeria not too long ago.
It was the feeling of being watched.
⧪⧪⧪⧪⧪
She was a predictable girl, opting to stay indoors most of the time while only going out each morning at ten for coffee. She went to the grocery store one more time since they’d met by chance, and for a moment he considered “bumping” into her again. It was too soon for that, especially since he knew he didn’t call her when he was supposed to.
It wasn’t exactly on purpose, things did come up and he didn’t have the time or privacy to call her. He wondered if she’d held onto the idea of him all weekend - if she’d waited for him like the good girl he assumed she was. The question was how long she would wait for him. Sure, he could call her, he could even take her on a date or two, but there were things that had to sort themselves out first.
When he decided to move in on her again, it was Monday, and unbeknownst to him Alice had waited for his call all weekend.
The skies were cloudy and the winds were starting to pick up. It was late September, but it felt like early November. He walked down the sidewalk with his hands in his coat’s pockets, his eyes focused on the woman in front of him. She was far enough away to not realize he was there - far enough to not realize he was following her. She stood out against the grey skies and dull buildings as the only colorful character around. Well, the only colorful character besides himself.
If he was trying to blend in, he realized he was doing an awful job at it. He dressed no differently on his day off than he did the day she met him. The only difference being that he wore a more vibrant shirt than he did that day.
He would come to realize that he associated Alice with Fall and cold weather. Surely part of this was due to meeting her in the Fall, but it was also the way she looked, and spoke. Her hair was a bright, unnatural red that matched the falling leaves, and she wore dark colors in a style that was reminiscent of Halloween and everything spooky. Even down to the sweet, cinnamon-y drinks she ordered from the coffee shop, she was Fall. She represented change, which was going to be a big thing in his life.
She stopped dead in her tracks in front of him, forcing him to slow down while she rummaged through her bag for something. With an audible groan, she threw her head back and turned around. She didn’t seem to notice him walking past while she continued to dig through her purse.
William opted to go into the coffee shop before her, hoping that him arriving before her wouldn’t be too suspicious. However, he always had plans for when she began to catch onto him.
As usual, the coffee shop was busy and bursting with life. People chatted away in line and in their seats while others sat in corners scribbling away in notebooks. The low lighting made everything seem more “homey,” and in a way it complimented the rich scent of coffee. The corner booth, his usual seat, was taken today, so he scouted for a different spot before settling mentally on a more obvious seat near the window.
“How can I help you?” His attention was grabbed by the barista.
⧪⧪⧪⧪⧪
Alice had gotten halfway home when she found her wallet hidden in the bottom of her bag. That was the moment she realized she really needed to empty her bag, considering it was filled to the brim with used up notebooks and stray pieces of paper.
Needless to say, this was a great start to her day.
She didn’t feel the urgency others did to relax on their last day off, especially since it wasn’t her last day off. She didn’t have to report to anyone or anywhere currently, and she hoped that would last for a while.
The streets felt different when she turned around to head back to the coffee shop - lonelier, almost. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she was alone again, after all, since coming back she was around her sister, and the thoughts of others plagued her mind all weekend. Her head was cleared finally, but that only made her feel odd.
The world was grey. The people who walked by her were dull and cold, and the windows reflected a bleak, empty sky. She couldn’t help but feel bored by her hometown, despite how much it changed. Another breeze pushed through the crowd, causing her to shiver slightly and pull her cardigan closer to her. It was a bit colder than it usually was that time of year.
The shop came into sight quicker than she thought it would, and the thought of the warm room made her pick up her pace slightly, practically jogging towards it.
That was when she saw him. He was sitting by the window, not at the small bar, but at a table. He wore a bright purple button down and Alice swore seeing the color reminded her of a romance novel a friend recommended to her. It was the first time she saw something colorful since this morning when she saw herself in the mirror. She couldn’t help but stop in her tracks.
William glanced up at her, smiled, and waved. She swore her heart burst at the sight, but that was before she noticed the other cup of coffee sitting across from him. She gave a small wave back, trying her best not to look too disappointed. As if he could feel her mood change, he followed her gaze before figuring out why her face dropped.
He gestured to the seat in front of her, and Alice couldn’t help but rush through the door to join him.

Top 5 of your own plants AND top 5 dream plants to own
MEGAN, asking me to choose between my plant children is basically criminal at this point, haha. At last count, I have over fifty of them, which is - - y'know, a lot of plants.
It's kind of a wild thing to me, because I had about three at the start of the Melbourne lockdowns, but I found they were just something that helped me feel really connected to the world during that 263 days of isolation. It sparked such a passion for gardening and plantcare that I don't think I had before - just getting to nurture these little slices of potted life and watch them grow and change during a period of my life that felt drawn to a halt was very special, and it's been something I've really gotten to take out of a few very challenging years.
But yes, haha, my plants! Top five in no particular order:
(All of my) Peperomias
Tumblr media
I have about six peperomias, a few of them are cuttings of this lady right here, but I have a few other sub-species of her too. Peperomias are great because they're so easy to look after and have such great shapes to them. They also have SUCH fascinating flowers which you can see on one of my other ones here:
Tumblr media
The flowers are these long, spindly soft-green stem extensions, and this picture doesn't really do them justice in reality. They're beautiful, hardy plants though, and I love them a lot.
My snake plant
Tumblr media
She just keeps growing and she has such height to her, which you can only kinda see in this pic, haha. Anyway, I love her, A+ lady.
My monstera
Tumblr media
I've posted about this one before, but I've had her since she was about 10cm tall, so the fact that she's now up to my sternum is bananas. (Yes, I know I need to buy her a new moss stick because the one she has is way too short, and better tuck her aerial roots, but in my defence, she grows very fast).
My crucifix orchid
Tumblr media
She's not flowering at the moment, but I still think she's a megababe. Plus I think aerial roots are sexy and any home gardener cutting them off is WRONG. Embrace the wild things your plants do! It's their world, we're just living in it, etc etc etc.
My rubber plant with bonus Oreo
Tumblr media
A terrible photo of my rubber plant, but Oreo loves to hide under her leaves, and this is the best photo I have of that, so I hope you get the gist anyway, haha.
Top Five Plants I Want
My dream these days is to have a proper native garden to provide sanctuary to native wildlife, particularly native bats, birds and bees (the three B's!) I'm pretty passionate about decolonising gardens, so even though I love a lot of non-native plants (including virtually all of the ones above), I do think that our gardens should prioritise native flora and try to restore our natural ecosystems.
I rent, which is a big part of why most of my plants are transportable, but I'm hoping soon I might be able to start fostering a native garden.
In that, five of the plants I'd want would be:
Lemon Myrtle
Tumblr media
I adore lemon myrtle, both as a plant and as food. It's delicious, beautiful, and just this incredible plant? I love her.
Waratahs
Tumblr media
Gorgeous showstoppers!!
Kangaroo Paw
Tumblr media
Kangaroo Paw's are probably one of my favourite native plants period, and I did actually have one for a long time, but I'd planted her out into the backyard and the soil at the place I live isn't very good quality, and despite trying to treat it, she died, which is a bummer. I'm hoping I have better luck next time!
Native Bluebell
We have a whole lot of these in the park near my house, and I just think they're really pretty. Tumblr's not letting me upload a pic, but you can see them here.
Wattle
Tumblr media
Yeah, okay, she's Australia's national flower, but I am in love with herrrr. Golden Wattle still takes my breath away when I see her in full flower, and the idea of having that at home is magic.
Ask me about my top fives!

All About Lamington National Park in Gold Coast
If you're looking for a getaway on the Gold Coast that is a little more off the beaten path, you may be interested in Lamington National Park. This park is located in the southeast of Queensland, and boasts a range of attractions and activities.
Tumblr media
Forests
Lamington National Park is an ideal destination for the outdoor enthusiast. Located in the Gold Coast Hinterland, this park protects Eastern Australian temperate rainforests. It is also home to 180 species of plants and animals.
The Lamington Park area is one of the best places to go for bird watching, bush walking, camping and picnicking. With many waterfalls, lush green views and an abundance of hiking trails, this is an excellent location for any outdoor adventurer.
The park is home to a number of endangered species. Among them, the rare Albert's Lyrebird and the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. Another endangered species is the large-eared pied bat.
In addition to these rare species, Lamington Park is also home to prehistoric reptiles. These reptiles can be found in the deeper rock pools. For more information, visit the Lamington National Park Management Plan.
There are 120km of trails to enjoy in Lamington National Park. Walks pass ferny waterfalls and follow mountain ridges. If you wish to view the park's spectacular scenery, you should bring a torch. You should also take along a first aid kit and plenty of water.
The park is protected by the Australian Government under the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. This area is home to most of the world's warm temperate rainforests.
The Lamington National Park is part of a larger region known as the Scenic Rim. This area is located between Springbrook National Park and Mount Tamborine National Park.
A walk in Lamington Park will give you breathtaking views of the Gold Coast. You can also take in the sights of Mount Hobwee, Mount Toolona and Mount Widgee. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Koalas
Koalas are one of Australia's most popular tourist attractions. These adorable creatures live throughout Queensland and the surrounding areas, including the Gold Coast. They have long, soft fur and sharp, long claws.
If you're interested in viewing koalas up close, there are several ways to do so. You can visit the Koala Centre in Logan City or the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast.
The Koala Centre offers daily talks and an interactive media centre. Visitors can also take a guided tour. Guests can also participate in an animal feeding session.
Koalas are considered to be vulnerable in Queensland and New South Wales. Their population is largely dependent on large woodlands and eucalypt forests. This delicate nature is threatened by land clearing and pollution.
Lamington National Park is located west of Nerang on the Gold Coast. It features extensive walking tracks along the McPherson Range.
Lamington National Park is managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Several species of birds and rare orchids are found here. In addition, there are over 500 waterfalls.
Visitors can also hike on the Tree Top Walk. The walk is an elevated track that's 15 metres above the rainforest floor. There are nine suspension bridges.
Koalas are mainly nocturnal. The best time to view them is at dusk or dawn. During these times, visitors can feed kangaroos and lorikeets.
The park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Site. As such, it's protected and monitored under the World Heritage Convention.
Another popular Gold Coast tourist attraction is the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Established in 1927, the sanctuary is home to koalas and other Australian wildlife. The sanctuary is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
youtube
Elebana Falls
Elabana Falls is one of the more popular waterfalls in the Gold Coast Hinterland. The falls are located in Lamington National Park, a short drive from Surfers Paradise. Visiting the falls is a great way to explore nature.
The waterfall is part of a larger landscape with the Toolona Creek circuit and Green Mountains section of the park. This part of the park features multiple waterways and wildlife displays. There are many walking tracks in this area, including the Elabana Falls track.
This waterfall is a beautiful cascade that drops about 25 metres into a narrow gully. It also features an impressive lower cascade and a pool beneath. Visitors can also swim up to the natural swimming hole.
The main trail is moderate and can be walked in counterclockwise direction. This is a good walk for bushwalkers with some experience. However, it can be difficult to navigate a creek that has been washed by heavy rain. Luckily, the rainforest is lush after a rainy season.
The shortest route from the car park to the waterfall is a 3.2 km walk. It takes about a hour. When you get to the falls, the track turns right. The views are incredible. You may want to bring a picnic.
Aside from the waterfall, the park has several other attractions to see, including the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Also, there is a boardwalk that is aptly named the Tree Top Walk.
For a closer look at the falls, there is a shorter walk to the bottom of the waterfall. The lower waterfall consists of a series of flowing streams that flow into a large pool. Eels can be found in the shallow water.
Tree Top Walk
O'Reillys Tree Top Walk is an award winning family friendly day out. This rainforest walk is located within Lamington National Park.
The park is home to over 320 km of walking tracks and is an ideal destination for hiking, bushwalking and nature exploring. It is also a great location to see a range of wildlife including rare species such as Albert's Lyrebird, Platypus and Coxen's Fig Parrot.
Located within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, Lamington Park is a unique and beautiful wilderness area that features lush rainforest, majestic waterfalls, unique plants, and rich wildlife. You can enjoy an exciting day of exploring the area with the help of a guided full-day tour, which includes return transfers from your hotel.
You can visit Lamington National Park anytime of the year, but the best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Temperatures are often cooler than in Brisbane, and visitors can also expect to find a range of birds and other wildlife.
Visiting the park is a great way to experience the Gold Coast Hinterland. However, you should be prepared for some changeable weather conditions.
Located in the World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park, the Tree Top Walk offers a one-of-a-kind attraction. This unique walkway provides a panoramic view of the surrounding mountain ranges.
The walkway consists of nine suspension bridges that provide spectacular views of the forest. A viewing deck at the top of the path reaches 30 meters above ground level. Visitors can also observe the canopy of flowering and fruiting trees, epiphytic orchids, and ferns.
Aside from the Tree Top Walk, visitors can also enjoy other outdoor activities, such as a visit to O'Reillys Rainforest Retreat. This family owned retreat is surrounded by a variety of forest creatures, including Wedge Tailed Eagles and Bowerbirds.
Places to stay
Located in Gold Coast Hinterland, Lamington National Park is an ideal destination for hiking. The subtropical rainforest is home to a variety of plants and animals. In addition, it contains raging waterfalls and a range of other attractions.
There are a number of places to stay in Lamington National Park. O'Reilly's guesthouse offers a three-room villa with a view of the park and sunset. Guests can also enjoy tea walks, a glow worm experience, and a Segway safari.
Another option is the Binna Burra Sky Lodge. The glamping retreat is located near Christmas Creek, within Lamington National Park. It has free Wi-Fi and a spa. These lodges are family friendly and ideal for a romantic getaway.
Other accommodation options include the Ridge Cottage. Built in stone, this cottage provides a cozy home away from home. This lodge is a great choice for a minimum two-day stay.
If you're looking for a more affordable option, try Wildlife Retreat Mudgeeraba. Located on a rural 8.5 acre block, this accommodation features panoramic coastal views. Guests can barbecue, sunbathe, and take in the scenery.
There are also Binna Burra Sky Lodges, which offer a range of activities. You can go for a golf game, take a walk through the rainforest, or play a round of golf.
During your stay, don't forget to see the Birds of Prey Show. Featuring barn owls, wedge-tailed eagles, and kites, this show is sure to entertain.
You'll also want to check out the Quest Robina. Located 10 minutes from the Gold Coast Hinterland, this hotel has an indoor spa, heated swimming pool, and garden. They even have pet-friendly apartments and rooms.
As you explore the area, keep in mind that the delicate nature is threatened by over-development and litter. Visitors need to follow safety signs and never feed the wildlife.

Bat Rescue and Rehabilitatiors List
PROVIDING TEMPORARY CARE (from Bat World Sanctuary's website): DO NOT handle a bat with bare hands, and do not attempt to rehabilitate the bat on your own. To do so could jeopardize your safely as well as the life of the bat. Please read the following information to provide temporary care for the bat until help is obtained.
Line a box with an old t-shirt so the bat has a surface to hang upside-down. Create some pleats in the shirt so the bat can hide if it wants to. (Make sure any tape that is used is secured well so the bat won't get stuck.) Put a small amount of water in a small, shallow container like a vitamin or baby food jar lid (as seen in this video: https://youtu.be/YtJkaDWuUQc ). DO NOT provide any type of food whatsoever - to do so will cause organ failure to critically dehydrated bats. Make sure a top is secured to the box as some bats can squeeze through a crack as thin as 1/2 inch. If you must handle the bat please remember to wear thick gloves (even though rabies is rare in bats, if the bat bites you it will need to be euthanized and tested). Until help is located, keep the box in a room where the bat won't get too warm or too cold and keep the bat away from children and pets.
Make sure to call, not email whichever local wildlife rescue in your area.

Aussie Wildlife FAQ
So here's questions I'm frequently asked as both a wildlife rescuer and carer and keeper at a wildlife sanctuary. Heads up, this is a long post, I've made the questions stick out so you can easily skip through. I've tried to make it as easy to read as possible, and to find what you're after, whilst also providing lots of info.
Poison Vs Venom, what's the difference?
Well, mostly, poison just never stops killing. Like if you poison an insect, then a bird or small mammal eats that insect and they slowly get poisoned by all the poisoned insects they eat, then something eats them, like an owl, and that gets poisoned, then as it rots the poison goes into the environment, etc. Poison never dies. Venom has to be injected, so yes you can be envenomated by a dead animal, if you are stupid. Poison can be inhaled, eaten/drunk or even through touch. So if a cow is poisoned you have to dispose of the body safely, if a cow is bitten by a venomous snake, technically you can still have steak for dinner.
Tumblr media
Are all Australian animals out to kill you?
Maybe.
They could want to kill us, I mean as a species we aren't that great. Their ability to kill us however is limited. So are all Aussie animals able to kill you? No. So we have lots of cute small mammals, like antechinus, dunnarts, pygmy possums and the like, that can bite and scratch but are very tiny bois. We even have lots of non-venomous snakes, pythons and blind snakes. Most lizards outside of Goannas can't cause too much damage. Echidna's are completely defensive, have no attack whatsoever. Lots of birds have no interest in you, unless you get near their nest. Freshwater Turtles, Little Penguins and Tawny Frogmouths all main defense is shitting really stinky shit at you. Even our venomous snakes, as long as you seek medical attention you should be fine. Considering we have the top 10 most venomous snakes in the world but average only 1 death a year that's pretty good.
Tumblr media
But you still have lots of dangerous animals right?
Yes.
Maybe I should elaborate. Any animal is dangerous, including you, if given the right circumstances. I'm a lovely person but hurt my dog and you better run. Most animals don't want a bar of you. However, if you are a threat to them, or their babies, they will defend themselves. A lot of animals get tagged with the word 'aggressive' which I don't like, aggression is a human emotion that I've never seen in wild animals, or even pets and things. Mostly it's defensive behaviours that people read wrong. For example, the most venomous snake in the world is the Inland Taipan (found in Aust.), however the most dangerous snake in Australia is the Eastern Brown snake, less venomous but also less shy and lives in suburbia. Still, it only ever strikes at people when it feels cornered and needs to get you to back the hell off. And lets be real here, what else can they do? They can't yell and scream, they can't punch or kick. Legit their only option is to bite, and even then mostly it's a closed mouth strike to freak you out into stepping back, and most people bitten by snakes are given a 'dry bite' where no venom is injected, as they want to use it on their food not waste it on us. And 90% of snake bites that happen in Australia are people either trying to catch or kill a snake.
It's fairly simple. Don't threaten animals, don't give them a reason to be dangerous and you are fine. Crocodiles in the water? Don't swim there. Sharks around? Avoid swimming at twilight. Snake? Leave it alone. Nest with baby birds? walk away. You don't randomly show up in some strangers home and expect them not to react, so why do we expect different from animals?
Tumblr media
What animals are on the most 'dangerous list' then? Which animals should I really avoid pissing off?
Start with the obvious. Crocodiles, venomous snakes, sharks, some jellyfish, venomous spiders, stone fish, blue ringed octopus, birds of prey (our Wedge Tailed Eagle WILL attack drones, hang-gliders and helicopters if they come into their territory) Then you've got the less obvious. Ants - like meat ants, they will swarm over you then all bite down at once. 1 bite isn't so bad, a whole colony biting you, deadly. Then there's other ants in the Myrmecia family (bull ants and the like) that are just HUGE, and have massive mandables for biting and also can sting you, and are one of the most toxic insects in the world.
Wombats - Can run at 40km/hr, skull so hard it's the only thing a Tassie Devil can't eat, able to bite your calf muscle clean off your leg, oh and they have killer booty. A hard cartilage plate in their lower back that they use to block their burrows, and if threatened can lay down and as the animal tries to get past jam their legs straight and crush the skull of a fox against the roof of their burrow, easily break a dingoes jaw or even destroy your hand.
Kangaroos - yes they box, hahaha wouldn't it be funny to box with a kangaroo. NO. Kangroos box for fun but also to defend themselves and their mob. The Alpha male is the big buff one that looks like he's on steroids. He looks like that for a reason, to defend and protect his mob. DO NOT MESS WITH ANY KANGAROOs, but really don't mess with Big Daddy (for being the alpha he gets all the ladies) Kangaroos are made for this. A punch from a Kangaroo can easily break you ribs. They can lean back on their tail and bring both legs up to kick you, easily tearing you open, which they can do with the claws on their toes, and so basically dissecting you from sternum down. Oh and if they gran you round the neck for a 'Cuddle' DUCK AND RUN. They will hold you in a kind of choke hold and then bring their legs up to kick you and basically snap you in half. Don't even mess with Wallabies man, they may be smaller but can still do damage.
Tassie Devils - are extremely shy and slower than you, like you can actually run away from them. BUT. They have the strongest bite strength compared to size of any animal. The have a PSI of 1200 and males weigh around 8 kg. For perspective, Hyenas have a PSI of 1100 and males weigh around 50kg
Brushtail Possums - They may be cuter than the American Opossums but trust me, they don't want you around. They are solitary so most people have heard them fighting of a night, screeching, shrieking, hissing, growling and making darth vadar noises. Heads up from someone who has had to rescue them from awkward places (fire-places, BBQs, closets) They are stronger than you and they will f*** you up. Even without them meaning to I've gotten injuries from my joey Brushies, they get so keen on their milk when you put it in that they climb your arm and their claws are sharper than cats. Also the sheer strength of them. I'm stronger than I look but if they are clinging on to a tree you are gonna need all your strength to get them off. The can also bite your finger clean off. And I've seen injuries from people who feed wild ones and for some reason have been late to put out the food or something and they've climbed their leg or even jumped on them - stitches were required in a few of those cases (human skin is not thick like tree bark)
Tumblr media
What's with Magpies and swooping?
Simple, they have nests/babies and are protecting them. Australia Magpies are very smart and can recognise faces. If they think you are a threat they will try and scare you off. Just like if you're walking along with your toddler and there's a weirdo doing something strange you hold the kid tighter and closer to you and move through faster. But these guys can't just move their nests or their babies. The spot is chosen based on food availability and shelter from sun and rain, but also not being too cold. It's their spot. I've never been swooped by Magpies, other birds yes, but not Magpies. My local birds know me as the lady that cleans and fills the bird bath. Legit the Magpies sing a specific song when it needs filling to call me out to do it. So don't be a threat. If they are swooping in that area, try to avoid it or go through quickly. We used to have Plovers at my school, in the bush at the end of the oval. Never a problem. One day some kids go into the bush and stomp on their nest and eggs. After that they would swoop anyone who came close to there. So the school blocked off that end of the oval. Fair call. Wasn't the birds fault.
Tumblr media
Why is everything named so basic?
Oh you mean the snake that's black with a red belly being balled a Red Belly Black Snake, and the tree with all the doodles on it being called a Scribbly Gum? 80% of plants and animals found in Australia are found NO WHERE ELSE. So the early Europeans had a lot of things to name and when they tried naming it themselves they would get it wrong. 2 good examples are: The Death Adder (only considered highly venomous, not deadly, and not an Adder). Also you're only likely to get bitten if you stand on it or try to pick it up. The Australian Magpie, they saw a black and white bird so it must be a magpie. Nope. Actually not in the corvidae family but in the butcherbird family - Artamidae. So their solution was to either take the Aboriginal word, for example, Quoll, Kookaburra, Koala, Quokka, Taipan. Or name it after what it looks like/sounds like/ is found Boobook Owl - makes a sound like booooo-book Squirrel Glider Eastern Water Dragon Grey Headed Flying Fox Flaky Bark Tea Tree Old man Banksia This can cause confusion though as not every brown coloured snake is a brown snake, and not all Eastern brown snakes are brown. Squirrel Gliders aren't related to squirrels. Flying foxes are bats not actual foxes that fly.
Tumblr media
What do I do if I find injured wildlife?
Well, depends on the wildlife and where it is. If it's in a dangerous position, like the middle of a highway, don't try anything. First thing, call a wildlife rescue group, there are plenty around and they have trained people who know what to do. A quick google search should show you all you need to know, also the IFAW's Wildlife Rescue App will identify the closest group to you.
If it's a snake, adult wombat or kangaroo, or any other animal that can cause you serious injury, leave it be. The wildlife rescuers you call can give you basic info on how to help but mostly calling them is the main thing.
If it's something smaller, like a young animal or glider or baby bird and you are able to put it into a cardboard box that will be perfect. The 3 main things injured/ill wildlife need are warmth, dark and quiet. You don't need to worry about food or water. The rescuers will organise that. If you give food or water to an animal in shock you can cause more damage.
THE BEST THING IS TO DO NOTHING. I know this sounds stupid. But so many problems can occur from people who don't know what they are doing helping out. You know what they say about good intentions. For example, picking up a Koala like you would pick up a human child (under the armpits, around the chest) you could actually break their ribs. Also so many Koalas end up needing vet care during heat waves because people pour water into their mouths - they can get pneumonia as the water goes in too fast, it is not a natural way for them to drink. You can also get yourself injured or make the animals injuries worse. I have seen Kangaroos with broken legs get up and try to hop away from people. I have seen severe scratches on other people because they tried to pick up an animal.
What diseases can wildlife give me?
Well. I only know about Australian wildlife, and it's very different to other parts of the world. If you get a bad bite or scratch from wildlife you should see your doctor ASAP, get the wound cleaned properly and make sure your tetanus is up to date (same as if a pet gives you a bad bite or scratch).
There aren't that many Zoonosis that are around in Australia that are easy to catch. Mostly you have to be dealing directly with sick wildlife to get them.
The main thing is Australian Bat Lyssavirus. ABL for short. Now our bats can carry it. About 1 in 1000 bats may have it and you HAVE to be bitten or scratched for it to be transmitted to you. If you are bitten or scratched by a bat your chance is 0.1% of getting ABL but it is related to Rabies, so head straight to hospital for treatment. If you don't touch a bat you won't get bitten or scratched and so your chance of getting it is 0. Hendra is the other virus our bats carry, however it has to go through a horse before it mutates enough for humans to get it.
Basically it's only when you get involved with wildlife that your risk of getting a disease from them is higher than VERY unlikely. If you happen to help some wildlife, and you maybe wrap them in a towel or jumper, even if they urinate on it. You can just chuck it in the wash (I usually add a little extra disinfectant) and it will be fine. Treat it the same as if a pet had used it or urinated on it.
Tumblr media
What's some Good Wildlife Apps to have?
Well, there's so many out there now hey? Here's some that I've found handy or know people that use. WomSAT EchidnaCSI PlatypusSPOT are all for recording sightings of these animals (wombats/echidnas/platypus) this helps researches track where they are and how they are going which means we can help them more as well. OzAtlas - record a sighting of anything Australian, animal, plant, fungus, insect. FrogID - need to identify a frog? This is the app for you. Use photos or sound recordings, Field Guide to *insert state/territory* Fauna - Have a field guide on you wherever you are without having to carry a book. Seek by inaturalist - Helps you identify any animals, plants, insect, fungus. IFAW Wildlife Rescue - wildlife rescue app (currently for NSW only but soon expanding) will give you advice on what to do and put you into contact with the local wildlife rescue groups.
Tumblr media
Besides Cats and Foxes, what other invasive species have you got that cause problems?
First up, any invasive species causes a problem. In Tasmania they have issues with Sugar Gliders, because they are not naturally found there and use up tree hollows that other animals need. Invasive species cause competition for food, water and shelter. They can also bring in diseases that didn't exist in Australia before and that our natives have no defence against (like cats and Toxoplasmosis) Here's a quick list of invasive animal species in Australia. Cats, dogs, foxes, pigs, water buffalo, ferrets rabbits, horses/brumbies, goats, camels, Cane Toad, European Honey Bee, Common Myna bird, deer, donkey, common starling, common pigeon, black rat, brown rat.
There's more, there's reptiles, and weeds and fish but those guys ^ are the main ones that cause problems.
I am an animal lover but unless we get rid of these animals you loose more in the long run. I'm 100% against use of poisons, I prefer having people hunt them to be honest. If you know what you are doing and have the right equipment you can give them a quick, painless death. To give you an idea how bad invasives are:
The introduction of the rabbit is the main cause the Lesser Bilby became extinct.
The introduction of cats and toxoplasmosis is believed to be the main reason Eastern Quolls became extinct on mainland Australia
Rats led directly to the extinction of 5 of Lord Howe Island's bird species
30% of our land snakes and Goannas are at risk as Cane Toads are rapidly spreading and eat their eggs.
The Common Myna Bird is the 2nd greatest threat to Australian native birds (habitat loss being the 1st)
The fox population has been estimated at 72 million and consume around 190 million birds a year
There's an estimated 23 million wild pigs/boars and an estimated 2.6 million goats - all eating whatever they come across.
How can I help Australian Wildlife?
There's the stuff we already know, like reduce/reuse/recycle and don't litter. But there's other things you may not know about.
Turn off lights at night - any lights that you don't need, don't have them on, especially if they are outside. Lots of animals require insects in their diets, particularly moths, which can be distracted by lights. Zoos Victoria have launched educational stuff for this https://youtu.be/ZAcL4FKPtHw
Learn about them - It's not hard, there's multiple ways you can do it. There's books, tv shows, pod casts, you can follow sanctuaries and other people who work with wildlife on social media. Planting flora that's native to your area is great as different plants can attract different animals and it's much lower maintenance, being made for that environment. You can even find cool life-hacks like Lemon Scented Tea-Tree doesn't just smell amazing and feed lots of wildlife, it keeps the mozzies away! There's different kinds of nesting boxes out there specific to different species that you can put up to help 'foster' that species. You can even become friends with your local Magpies! Mine know me as the lady who cleans and fills the bird bath and all I had to do was whistle to them when I was done and now they are really chill around me and I get to watch their antics. Debunk Myths! - In learning about wildlife you can debunk lots of myths like: a mother bird won't take it's chick back if you've touched it (fake news!) or that snakes dislocate their jaw to swallow their prey (that would be soooo painful!)
Put out water - have a bird bath and keep it clean and full. Or if you don't have one or want to get one just put water out on hot days. Summer's getting hotter and hotter and our animals really suffer. So put out a nice pot or container of water. Don't forget to put a rock or a stick in it if it's a slippery surface (like plastic or metal) so that little animals and bugs don't fall in and drown, and keep it out of the sun if it's likely to heat up.
Check roadkill - it's not pleasant but needs to be done. Don't do it if it's a motorway or somewhere dangerous, but if you can PLEASE do. Roadkill sometimes looks dead but isn't and you don't want them laying there suffering. They may have pouch young if they are a marsupial or young nearby that will need care without their parent. And where possible get it off the road. Species like Tasmanian Devils, Goannas and Wedge Tailed Eagles feed on roadkill and can then end up as roadkill themselves. Even if you have to drag it, it's dead and not gonna feel any more pain. 100% of people I have attended a rescue for who have called because they stopped and found a joey or young in a pouch or hiding nearby have not regretted their decision at all. Even if they were late for work, they saved a life and it was worth it.
Avoid using poisons - insecticides, pesticides, snail bait and straight up rat poison. Like mentioned in POISON VS VENOM, it just keeps killing. There are so many other options out there and they aren't hard to find. There's stuff on the internet but also at Bunnings I've found more environmentally sound options that use Tea Tree oils and Eucalyptus instead and work just as well.
Don't feed them! - Most Aussie animals are gluten and lactose intolerant. BREAD IS REALLY BAD! and if not eaten it gets mouldy and causes disease. Putting out bird seed is the number 1 problem when we talk 'feeding wildlife'. WHY?
The 'wild birdseed' that you buy in shops isn't actually for wild birds. JUST LOOK AT IT, you don't see those seeds growing out in the wild. The main seed wild birds eat are Bottle-brush, She-oaks, Banksias, Wattle and Eucalypts. None of those are found in these bags of seed.
Even for seed eaters that seed you buy is too fatty and unbalanced
For those that don't usually eat seed, like Lorikeets, eating the seed destroys the specialised bristles on their tongues that they need to eat their natural food - nectar and pollen.
If you don't keep it clean you will spread diseases, especially psittacosis (beak and feather) for which there is no cure just a slow, drawn out death. You can also catch it and end up in hospital.
You cause an imbalance. Animals breed based on food availability, if you make food available they will breed but there might not be enough space or trees available and you create more competition and also they end up relying on you and if you go on holiday or anything they can die without that food.
You can cause health issues in other animals. Possums love bird seed but it makes them fat, making it harder for them to escape predators.
You will be feeding non-natives. For example, the Common Myna bird cannot survive on wild plants, but if there is a food source around they can. Got rid of Common Mynas in my neighbourhood by convincing my neighbours to stop putting out bird seed.
RATS LOVE BIRD SEED. Specially feral rats. Mice also love bird seed.
You make a predator hot-spot. It won't take long for predators to realised animals they prey on visit your feeding station and they will come. The most common predator I find around bird seed? Snakes. Snakes love rats and mice, rats and mice love bird seed. You do the maths.
If you want to feed them just do some research and plant trees that are food for them.
Tumblr media
How many species are endangered?
Sadly, it's almost quicker to list what's NOT endangered in Australia.
That's hard to say as there is different ways they can be endangered. In one area they may be common, but in another they could be disappearing. You can have Endangered lists at different levels; local, state, national and international.
But the most used list is the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global extinction risk status of animal, fungus and plant species. AKA the IUNC Red List
Here's a bit of a breakdown: EXTINCT 26 mammals 7 birds 4 amphibians CRITICALLY ENDANGERED 7 mammals 8 birds 15 amphibians 13 reptiles ENDANGERED 18 mammals 29 birds 18 amphibians 21 Reptiles VULNERABLE 51 mammals 40 birds 23 amphibians 35 reptiles NEAR THREATENED 43 mammals 37 birds 9 amphibians 21 reptiles
Then there's the "data deficient" category where they really just don't have the info. 10 mammals 11 amphibians 42 reptiles

Sympathy for the Devil
Bats and devils are among the most popular topics associated with Hallowe’en.  Of course, the research collection in the Section of Mammals has worldwide examples of bats species, but we don’t find them scary and we think about bats and their vital ecological roles all year long.  Perhaps more mysterious and less well-known are the two Devil specimens stored among the wombats, kangaroos, and koalas in our collection.  Even school children have heard about *our* kind of devils.  Yes, the Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is a marsupial – a pouched mammal, like our opossum – that is found only on the island of Tasmania, located some 140 miles off the southeast coast of Australia.  Fossil evidence tells us that it once lived on the Australian mainland, but it may have been wiped out on the continent by the introduction of the Dingo, Australia’s legendary wild dog.
Tumblr media
The Tasmanian devil is a stocky mammal with short legs, short black fur and a distinctive white throat patch. Its head is noticeably large for the size of the body. An adult male may weigh up to 20 lbs. They are nocturnal with a good sense of sight, smell, and touch. Devils are known to cover significant distances nightly, in search of carrion or prey. They can move surprisingly fast and seem to enjoy swimming. In the wild, individuals can live between five and seven years, but many die within the first year of birth. Although it is the largest living marsupial carnivore, the Tasmanian devil is predominantly a scavenger.
Tumblr media
A close look at the skull shows evidence of space on the side of the head for large jaw muscles. For its size, the Tasmanian devil has the strongest bite force of any mammal – more powerful than even a hyena! With the large masseter muscles and especially large molars, it can easily crush bone. In fact, devils are such efficient carrion-eaters that they willingly consume an entire carcass, including the fur.
Although this animal gained a reputation for having a bad disposition, it is speculated that this impression was derived from the poor conditions it was kept in when first captured for observations. Since then, it sometimes has been kept humanely as a pet and been found to be much friendlier than initially reported. Tasmanian devils do not seek each other’s company except during the mating period. However, they often come together to feed on a dead animal, where vocalizations and as many as nineteen different behavioral cues are used for communication. These communal gatherings are characterized by aggression and loud sounds, described as “frequent growling” and “blood-curdling screams”!
In 1996, a sad chapter began in the existence of the Tasmanian devil. A deadly infectious cancer called devil facial tumor disease, began to spread within the population. In 2012, the Australian government transferred 30 disease-free individuals to tiny Maria Island off the coast of Tasmania, in what was called ‘island insurance’, while researchers worked on perfecting a vaccine. By 2017, the disease had led to a 90% extinction rate on Tasmania. In hopeful news, by 2019 there were indications that surviving individuals’ immune systems may be undergoing modifications to fight the disease. In early September 2020, a consortium of conservation groups released 11 Tasmanian devils to a wildlife sanctuary in the state of New South Wales, placing the Tasmanian devil on the Australian mainland for the first time in more than 3000 years.  An additional 15 devils were released in early October and more releases are planned.
Currently, the Tasmanian devil is not extinct, but its recovery hangs in the balance. It would be tragic if we are left only with museum specimens and Taz, the Looney Tunes cartoon image, of this fascinating mammal.
Suzanne B. McLaren is the Collection Manager in the Section of Mammals at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Museum employees are encouraged to share their unique experiences from working at the museum.

MvA Ocs
I shall share my Monsters vs Aliens ocs. One or two are older general ocs that I’ve reworked for this universe.
Mercy Vivas/”La Bruja” - A nervous wedding dress seamstress who accidentally tapped into her family’s dark magic past. Has phenomenal magical powers but no knowledge to how to use it. Her cell is lined with sticky notes of what she’s learned through trial-and-error. Mexican hispanic, with dark skin and brown eyes, dyed green hair (bob-cut, in bun when working), and is fairly short at 5ft. Wears overalls and tailors smocks normally, but has purple “witchy” clothing for missions or experimenting. Conflicts a bit with Dr Cockroach due to their views on science vs magic. Has big stupid crush on a certain giant lady.
Radu/”Bat Vampire” - The unfortunate result of a vampire getting desperate enough to try eating local bats. Radu was a juvenile microbat who bit his attacker back after it had drained his mother, and gained vampirism in turn. Instead of turning into a human-like vampire however, Radu is transformed into... a weird looking bat child. Looks like a humanoid bat about the size of a small dog and has *Very* fluffy black fur that conceals his eyes. Uses feet like hands as he lacks traditional arms. Radu was discovered in Hungary after he was caught eating out of trash bins. Requires a iron-rich diet to stay healthy, and terrifies Dr Cockroach when he initally tried eating him. Capable of flight and echolocation. Is pretty much a toddler in age, and doesn’t understand what happened to him. Imprints on Link as his caretaker.
Dara O’Ryan/”Scarecreep” - A lesson in why you should never leave family behind when emigrating. “Dara” was one of the sole possessions of the O’Ryan family during the Great Hunger of Ireland. Dara was created to terrfiy both birds and other starving people from the family’s meagre crops. By placing their hopes and dreams into the sack of straw, they breathed life into it. Unfortunately once the rent got too high; the O’Ryan’s skipped town, moved to Australia, and dropped the “O” in Ryan into the ocean. Dara waited for centuries for their family to return, forever standing watch over the rotting field and crumbling hut. Was detected sometime after when developers in the area starting reporting about a “mad farmer” chasing them off the property with a pitchfork and destroying machinery. Area 5X had a difficult time capturing Dara, as they feel no pain and filled their body with stinging nettles. Was eventually detained after Susan sat him down for a peaceful talk. Is roughly the height of a person, made from scrap cloth, with eyes painted on. Mouth has been cut open across the face and is full of stuck needles. Wears clothes typical of a farmhand, and has a number of twine wigs they use to accessorise. Eats pests like rats and birds like a snake, although no one is sure how they digest. Unironically terrifying.
Hazuki Minamoto/”Blond Widow” - A Jorōgumo that let himself be caught by Area 5X. Has a long list of crimes under his belt and was wanted for a number of high-profile murders/eatings of japanese public officials. By letting himself be caught by American forces, he essentially claims sanctuary in the states. Top half is a beautiful androgynous young man with blond hair and purple eyes, bottom half is a giant Trichonephila clavata abdomen. About seven feet tall counting the spider half. Has the abilities of a spider (web-spinning, climbing walls, venom etc), with the wit and scheming of someone who’s been alive since the Heian period. Very vain and particular. No one is truly sure what his angle is, as he doesn’t seem to be targetting anyone for a meal. Best that Monger keep an eye on him...
Feel free to ask more about them, or send me your own MvA ocs! I may have apart two of alien characters I’d like to introduce into the world

One Last Delivery
Santa’s gaze swept over the crowd of elves. “You all know what I’m going to say, so I’m not going to mince words. This... this has not been a normal year, which means this isn’t going to be a normal Christmas.” He gestured, and a holographic projection of the world sprang up. “We’ve managed to make the rest of our deliveries, but we still have one last continent to go.”
A low murmur ran through the crowd.
“Yes, Australia. The last frontier. The final frontier. The deadliest frontier. Even during the best of years, it’s a dangerous run, but this year? I won’t lie. If you choose to come with me, there's a good chance you won't make it back. This year, we won’t be dealing with just the local wildlife... we’ll be dealing with the plague zombies too. Even so... who’s willing to go with me?”
A great cheer went up, and the crowd of elves pressed forward.
“Death before dishonour!” they cried. “Christmas for all!”
“Santa, we’ve got incoming.”
Santa nodded at the elf keeping a close eye on the sleigh’s advanced sensors. “How many and how far?”
“At least a dozen contacts, maybe more, and they’re closing fast. Distance is one hundred kilometres, but at their present speed, we’ve got less than a minute.”
“At that speed and at this altitude...” Santa’s expression was grim. “Sugar gliders.” He took a deep breath and then raised his voice. “Prepare for boarders! We have sugar gliders inbound. ETA less than a minute.”
All along the length of the sleigh train, elves readied themselves. Lesser elves might have quailed at the thought of facing Australian sugar gliders, but they were the elite. They had fought alongside Santa during the great Holiday Wars and the Polar Conflicts. They were not about to run in the face of some marsupials, even winged harbingers of death like the sugar gliders.
The elf at the sensors swallowed thickly. “Contact in five... four... three... two... one... contact!”
The first of the sugar gliders swooped in, little more than a streak of motion as the sleigh train’s flak cannons turned the sky around them into a sea of shrapnel. The first few sugar gliders to get caught in the maelstrom went down, but the others scattered, their shock-absorbing fur allowing them to weather the storm as they closed in.
“For the North Pole!” an elf screamed. “Death to the enemies of Christmas!”
The first sugar glider reached the sleigh train and slammed straight into one of the elves. The elf went down screaming, his assault rifle barking a mad, angry cry as the sugar glider put its teeth and claws to work.
“No!” another elf wailed. “They got Billy!”
More sugar gliders closed in, weaving their way through the clouds of devastation unleashed by the flak cannons. The elves opened fire with their rifles, the staccato of their gunfire punctuated by the deep, bass boom of detonating shells.
“We need reinforcements!” an elf cried. “We’re being overrun!”
“The second sleigh is about to go down!” another shouted. “We can’t hold them! There’s too many of them!”
Santa heard all of the pleas for help. His eyes narrowed, and he reached for the sack slung across his back. He turned to one of the elves beside him. “Take the reins,” he ordered.
“But Santa -”
“Take. The. Reins.”
Santa’s magical sack was designed to carry an essentially infinite amount of stuff without ever being too heavy for him to carry. What people didn’t know was that it could also be used as a weapon. By allowing it to exert its full weight at the moment of impact, Santa could turn it into a club with effectively infinite mass.
The first sugar glider never knew what hit it.
“Santa!” One of the downed elves scrambled to his feet. “You’re here!”
“Of course, I am.” Santa handed the elf his rifle. “Now, follow me. We’ll deal with these marsupials.”
As they made their way down the sleigh train, Santa continued to club and pummel sugar gliders with his magical sack. Marsupial after marsupial fell before his righteous fury, and the elves rallied to him, bringing down more of the deadly fliers with barrages of withering gunfire.
“We’re clear,” an elf said. “We’ve searched the rest of the sleigh train. There aren’t anymore sugar gliders.”
A cheer went up, but Santa held up one hand. “Don’t celebrate too early. We’re going to have to descend to make our delivers in the cities, and you know what that means.” His eyes narrowed ominously. “Koalas.”
Santa looked over the burning ruins of Sydney in horror. Koalas wouldn’t have done this. No. Not even those evil marsupials weren’t crazy enough to burn entire cities down. It had to be someone else, and the culprits soon revealed themselves.
Running through the burning city were crazed plague zombies. The Infected shrieked as they lurched after their prey, devouring innocent passersby and laying siege to the few remaining sanctuaries of the Uninfected. A wave of pure, unadulterated fury ran through Santa.
“They’re ruining Christmas.” His jaw clenched. “Land the sleigh,” he ordered.
“But Santa...”
“Land the sleigh and prepare for combat. We’re going to save Christmas... one way or the other.”
Simon had once been a simple office worker. The outbreak of the Plague had changed all of that. Screw office work. The only thing that mattered now was staying one step ahead of the Infected. Alas, his hopes of living to see another day looked to be going the way of the dodo. He was cut off and surrounded by Infected. Gulping, he raised his cricket bat. If he was going to die, he’d at least try to hit a few of them for six before he -
“Merry Christmas!” A towering figure landed in front of him and then swept the horde of Infected aside with a single, brutal swing of a very large and apparently incredibly heavy sack.
“Santa...?” Simon stuttered. For who else could it be in those clothes and with that hat?
“Yes. And You’re Simon Smith. You’ve been a very good boy this year.” Santa’s grin was toothy. “Would you like a present?”
Simon nodded.
“Here.” Santa handed him a shotgun and enough ammunition to take on a small army. “How would you like to do your good deed for the day?”
Simon took the shotgun and started loading it. “Please tell me we’re going to be killing the Infected.”
“Damn straight.” Santa pointed. “And we’re not alone. We’ve got air support.”
Above was a sleigh full of elves with assault rifles.
Simon grinned. “Merry Christmas, Santa.”
Santa hefted his sack over his shoulder with one hand and readied a revolver in his other hand. “Let’s go say hello to all the bad boys and girls.”
Santa crushed another group of Infected beneath his magical sack and then shot another out of the air with his revolver as it leapt toward him. A flash of movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention, and he turned, ready to fire again.
It was a koala.
But instead of leaping at him, the marsupial simply leapt past him and took down one of the Infected in a shower of blood and gore. Dropping the mangled body, the koala tilted its head to one side.
“So... you don’t like them either.” Santa looked past the koala. There were dozens more behind it... an entire army of koalas. “How do you feel about a truce until they’re dealt with?”
The koala said nothing, but it gave a sharp, curt nod and then raised its claws high over its head. At that signal, the other koalas surged into the open, hurling themselves into the oncoming Infected.
“Damn...” Simon wiped some sweat off his brow. The man had been joined by hundreds more men and women, all of them using their presents to lay into the Infected. “Now we’ve got koalas on our side? What is the world coming too?”
“Strange times make for strange allies,” Santa replied. He took a deep breath. “Come on. The fight isn’t over yet!”
There are times when Santa brings cheer to the world via smiles and presents. There are also times when Santa has to personally beat the absolute crap out of sorrow and despair using his magical sack and whatever weaponry he has on hand up to, and including, firearms, explosives, and an entire sleigh train’s worth of angry, homicidal elves.

First Words: Teddy
A one-shot about how I think Teddy’s first words might have gone
Read here or on ao3
Word Count: 2476
When Sirius had died, it had felt like being plunged into dark smoke. The air was so thick he thought he might choke on it. He couldn’t see or hear anything besides his own grief, and any lights that may have been lit were quickly extinguished, fading back into the inky darkness
When Dumbledore had died, it had felt like he had been thrown back into the maze. The path forward hidden, danger at every turn, no idea which way he was supposed to go now. Only this time there was no exit - he was trapped, and he could never escape
But now the smoke was gone, and he had fought his way out of the maze. And it had left carnage behind. Colin Creevey, Lavender Brown, Fred, Remus, Tonks… almost fifty had died defending Hogwarts, with many more having already perished at the hands of Death Eaters. And this loss felt different again. This time round, it felt like a hole had been burrowed into his chest, empty and cavernous. A hole that should be filled, but never would be again. With the friends and family he had lost, yes. But also with Voldemort. For he had been destined, since even before he was born, to kill the dark lord. And now that he had, what was left? What was he?
For a long while, he hadn't known. Nor had he particularly cared to find out. His best friend had just lost a brother, what did it matter if he was a little unsure about the future? When Ron and Hermione had gone to find her parents in Australia, they hadn't invited him. It was probably for the best. He wasn't emotionally available enough to be their shoulder to cry on, he knew that. He was staying at the Burrow, just while he got back on his feet, but he couldn't bear to look any of them in the eye. So he had thrown himself into his work - rebuilding the Ministry, tracking down and remaining Death Eaters. But he never enjoyed it. It was just his duty. It was his mess to clean up, after all. So if he wasn't a friend, a family member, or an Auror, what did that leave?
The answer was obvious, really. He was Edward Lupin's godfather
He apparated into the front yard with a faint pop. He shifted the backpack on his shoulder and smiled faintly. The Tonks household had become a sort of sanctuary to him over the months. The only place where he could be with people who actually needed him right now
Just after the war, after he had finally remembered that he even had a godson (he had spent two weeks moping before Ginny had finally snapped and dragged him to Andromeda's house herself), he had spent nearly all his time here. Even now, after the dust was starting to settle, and people were just starting to work towards moving on, it still felt like a safe haven. A place where he could forget about work, and life, and just spend time with Teddy
Teddy. He was growing up so fast. He knew fully well that he sounded like someone's elderly grandmother when he said that, but it was true. When he'd first met him, he could fit his whole tiny body within his folded arms. Now he'd grown almost three times in size. And he was learning so quickly too. He could sit up unaided now, and crawl, and babble. There was lots of babbling
Harry had never loved anyone more
Andromeda answered the door quickly when he knocked. She didn't look surprised - Harry would often come around without former planning. She had never turned him away yet "Hey, Harry" she said "Teddy's just woken up from his nap - he'll be happy to see you"
He let himself in, and Andromeda shut the door behind him. Harry had come to admire the woman standing in front of him - lost a husband and a daughter within a few short months, and yet she had never once, to his knowledge, considered not looking after Teddy “What’s in the bag?” she asked, nodding at his backpack “It’s, uh-” he felt himself flush “It’s stuff for Teddy, actually” He lifted it off his shoulder “I was, um, I went back to my parent’s house a couple days ago. I-” he laughed lightly “I’m not quite sure why, actually. I guess I felt I should. And I found… these” He unzipped the bag and let her peer inside. When she saw the soft toys inside, she stiffened, but didn’t protest “I guess they were… well, mine. I figured Teddy might…” he trailed off “If you don’t think it’s appropriate, that’s fine, I’ll put them back-” “No, no” she shook her head, and attempted a smile “You’re right, it’s right for him to have them”
There was a loud squeal to Harry’s right. He swung round, and beamed “Hey, Teddy” Teddy grinned and waved his pudgy arms in Harry’s direction, giggling. He toppled onto all fours and started crawling towards him, slowly but determinedly “You’re getting good at that” Harry acknowledged Though he didn’t understand the words, he clearly understood his tone of voice - his hair flashed bright yellow
Harry put his bag down, and went over to his godson. He was a beautiful baby; although, being his godfather, he guessed he was always going to think that. He had a lot more hair than he had a few months ago, when they had first met. As per usual, it was brightly coloured - this time purple. However when Harry picked him up, his hair darkened and lengthened, becoming his own scruffy black mop. His pupils even flashed emerald briefly, before going back to the dark eyes he had inherited from his mother “You like doing that, don’t you?” he said lightly “I bet you’ll have lots of fun when you’re older, imitating people” “Dora certainly did” Harry turned to consider Andromeda. After Tonks had died, she had gone months without mentioning her. Now she was doing so unprompted. Maybe she was starting to move on
Teddy batted his tiny fists at Harry’s face, his eyes wide with curiosity. Harry laughed “Hang on a mo’, Teddy. I’ve got something to show you” He put him back down on the ground. Thankfully, he didn’t cry - he seemed quite content re-discovering his feet. Harry strided over to the backpack and carried it back, sitting down in front of the baby “I have some new toys for you, Teddy” He seemed to recognise the word ‘toys’, as his head shot up eagerly. Harry chuckled, and held up the backpack “In here, see?” he said, “They’re some animals. Now, you might not recognise all of them, but that’s okay, I can help you”
He rummaged inside the bag, grabbing the first one his hand found “Ah. Now, you might have seen one of these before” He pulled it out of the bag. Teddy’s round eyes widened - he didn’t seem to have realised that there were things inside the bag “This is a dog, see?” he said, ignoring the puncture-like feeling in his heart “Dog. Woof woof” Teddy eagerly snatched at it. He gripped it with one hand, while patting the fur with the other. He made a funny little cooing noise as he did it - Harry had come to associate it with curiosity “Feels funny, doesn’t it?” he said cheerfully “A bit like hair, hmm?” He patted the top of Teddy’s head. Teddy tried to imitate, but his arms could only reach his ear, so he poked that instead
Harry glanced back in the backpack. His smile faded “Now, Teddy, this one’s a little bit different” He picked up the toy wolf. Teddy frowned, his eyebrows screwed up “Oooooh?” he held up the dog “No, this isn’t a dog” he gave the new toy to Teddy “This is a wolf” Teddy’s frown faded as quickly as it had appeared. He inspected it for a moment, his lips slightly parted
“Wooolf” he said
Harry paused “Pardon, Teddy?” “Wooolf” he said again, more insistently Harry stared at him for a long moment. He swung round “Did you hear-?” Andromeda had frozen in place. Her face had gone slack. She nodded mutely
Harry grinned, turning back to Teddy “Yeah, that’s a wolf” he said eagerly “Well done!” “He might-” from behind, Harry could hear Andromeda swallow “He might have said ‘woof’. As in, like a dog” Frowning, Harry turned back "Cause he's still holding Si- he's still holding the dog" Andromeda pointed "No, I heard an 'l'" said Harry firmly
He turned back to Teddy. He didn't seem to be aware that he'd done anything remarkable. He was currently waving both his arms up and down, in about as far away from a synchronised fashion as you could get. He was still holding both toys "Teddy?" He paused "Listen, kiddo" Harry said softly "please can you tell me what this is?" He pointed at the wolf. Teddy examined it for a moment, before coming to a conclusion "Wooolf" "Okay, yes" he nodded "Can you tell what this one is?" He pointed at the dog. Teddy paused, frowning, before his face cracked into a wide smile "Woof woof!" he clapped his hands together, giggling "Yeah, it is" Harry grinned back
He turned back to Andromeda "You heard the difference, right?" Andromeda's mouth thinned. She seemed to be looking for an argument "...yes" she conceded Harry nodded
He turned back to Teddy. He had put the dog toy in his mouth "No, don't- you know what? Do what you want" Harry had realised months ago that stopping babies putting stuff in their mouth was very much a losing battle He picked up Teddy, grinning as he squealed happily "Look at you, saying words already!" he pulled him into a hug "my smart little godson, talking!" Teddy made a content little humming noise. Harry smiled
Teddy had dropped the toys when Harry had picked him up. But when he was put back down, he didn't go to retrieve them. Instead, he grabbed Harry's backpack, investing the new feeling of the fabric
"Hang on, Teddy, there's one toy left" Teddy blinked at him, waiting "You probably won't recognise this animal" Harry pulled out the last toy - a stag. Teddy reached for it, interested. Harry let him have it "No rat toy, then?" Andromeda asked "No" Harry shook his head "I couldn't find one - I did look" He figured Sirius or Remus had found it, when and if they came to visit. They had probably destroyed it - that's what he would have done, at least
Teddy was trying to look closer at the stag. He wasn't paying attention to the antlers - they kept poking his pudgy cheeks "...Wooolf?" he said slowly "No, no, Teddy, not a wolf this time" said Harry "This is a stag. Can you say 'stag'?" “Sssssss… dag!” he raised his hands up in the air triumphantly, beaming “Very good! Smart cookie” He poked Teddy’s stomach. He giggled, curling in on himself
“Okay” said Harry “I think we have too many toys for your little hands. Let’s put some of these upstairs” He put the discarded toys in his backpack. Teddy made a little whimpering noise, reaching for the bag “No, Teddy, it’s alright” Harry said quietly “They’re still just in here, see?” He scooped up the baby with one arm, carrying the backpack with the other “Come on, let’s go upstairs” Teddy made a soft noise, almost like a mewl. Harry chuckled
He went to climb the stairs, before pausing “Andy” “Yes?” He sighed, not quite sure how to phrase what he wanted to say “When… when I was little, my aunt and uncle didn’t tell me I was a wizard. All the weird stuff that happened around me, they’d just belittle it, dismiss it. I used to think there was just something wrong with me. It was… quite bad, actually, for a long while. But they couldn’t stop it. Being a wizard was just part of who I was” Andromeda frowned “If sorry, I don’t quite see your point-?” “My point is that, as much as you might dislike it, Teddy is part werewolf” he said, deciding to be upfront “That’s a part of who he is. And you can’t just ignore that. Nothing is going to change that - the only thing that can change is how we react” Andromeda’s expression seemed to have frozen in place “He’s not part werewolf. He doesn’t transform” Harry scoffed before he could stop himself “Come on, I know you're not that naive. Are you saying you haven’t seen how restless he gets around full moon?” She didn’t reply to that “He’s his father’s son as well as his daughter’s” Harry said softly
Andromeda scowled at that. It was only on her face for a split second, but Harry caught it “He looks so much him” she said stiffly “More so every day” Harry glanced at Teddy, who was regarding the conversation with blank curiosity. He did look very much like Remus. Except his eyes. He had his mother’s eyes. That’s fairly ironic, he thought to himself, coming from you “Yes, he does” he said simply “Every so often, I’ll look at him” Andromeda said, her voice distant “And I won’t see him. I’ll just see the face of the man who abandoned Dora when she needed him most. Twice” Harry sighed “I know” he said, treading carefully “But he came back. And if your daughter could forgive him… surely you can too?” “She was in love with him. I wasn’t” she said harshly “You can excuse a lot from the people you love… but yes. I can forgive him. But I haven’t forgotten”
Harry glanced at the floor “Andromeda, Remus left because he hated himself” “He left,” she snapped “Because he was a coward” “Maybe, in that regard” Harry conceded “But it came very much from a place of self loathing. He genuinely thought that both Teddy and Tonks would be better off without him. And that came from a lifetime of negative self talk; of believing what society told him, that he was a monster. Now, do you really want the same thing to happen to your grandson?” Andromeda’s head snapped up “I would never call him a monster-” “Speaking from experience” Harry interrupted “Most of it is subconsciously. Like, for example, if he remembered the expression you pulled when he said wolf’. You… you’re probably gonna need to think harder about how you act around him. And quickly, too - it starts young” Andromeda stared at the floor “Just- just tell me you’ll try” Harry pleaded quietly She nodded “Yes. Of course, I’ll try” He nodded stiffly “Okay. Good” He carried Teddy upstairs, taking the bag of toys with him

To anyone who reads this,
Happy Hanukkah! It has been months since I last wrote on here, so I do not know if anyone is still reading. Honestly, I do not even know what to write, but I will start by saying this evening I clicked on the Tumblr app on my phone quite by accident, and found a rather nice message from someone who had read my previous posts. If she is still reading, well thank you that message made my night, and has also motivated to start writing on here again. Anyway, since it has been so long since my last post, I am not sure where to even begin. As of my writing this my state (Victoria) was declared COVID free, though recently five out of state tourists in quarantine have tested positive, and lockdown has pretty much been lifted. Life is now nearly back normal, although some restrictions are still in place and masks are still mandatory. My synagogue held an event for Hanukkah / Shabbat Friday night, the first time in months they have had anyone other than Bar / Bat Mitzvah kids and their immediate family members, or immediate family members of recently deceased in the sanctuary. We are also allowed to actually have people over, which is nice. My sister in law and mother in law have birthdays coming up (Catherine's is tomorrow and Andrea's is Monday) so we have having a combined celebration tomorrow afternoon. Melissa has started a new position at work, and one of my best friends, Westley, is about to finish University. Other than that things here have still been pretty uneventful. The electric windows control unit on the driver's side of my car (the Holden, which until now has never had an issue) so I spent the day yesterday taking that apart, now I am trying to find a replacement part. In the mean time the window is at least closed, but it cannot be opened, which is an inconvenience because it's summer in Australia. Hopefully the part won't take two long to source and I can reassemble the control unit. Anyway I guess that is all for now. Since it is the third night of Hanukkah I will post some photos of our menorah.
