ac mirage spoilers under the cut
honestly i was so disappointed to find that nehal isnt even a real person? her and basim had such chemistry, such empathy between them and then it turns out shes a manifestation of his ancient memories, what a bummer, basim‘s love interest/best friend is himself — man was raw dogging life all by himself — how miserable!

AC Mirage spoilers & ramblings⬇️
Forever pissed that instead of making nehal like a reincarnation of Angrboda (or even sigyn i love the symbolism with her) they just made her a figment of basim’s imagination/a version of loki blah blah blah. Like come on they could have linked the whole “lost my wife and son thing” and nehal and their son dying could have been what woke Loki up and actually mirror basim and Loki’s storys. But noooo. Fuck. FUCK THIS.

Basim Ibn Ishaq headcanons
Basim Ibn Ishaq x GN!reader
Word count: 1003
Tumblr media
Basim is an “actions speak louder than words” man. He’s kind of reserved by nature and has spent many years mastering the art of controlling his emotions during his time in Alamut.
That being said, his love language is definitely acts of service.
It starts off small – you both have a passion for literature, a common ground he has yet to realize. He’s talking to Fuladh about a recent poem he’s just read, reciting his favorite lines, when he hesitates at the end. He’s trying to remember the final verse when you jump in and quote it for him, and Basim shoots you an amused look.
“Since when do you enjoy poetry? ”
He tries to surprise you sometimes – he likes to lend you his favorite books, and if you indulge the man, he’ll even rant about his favorite poets/poetesses and their works. It becomes a bonding mechanism between the two of you, and it might look corny to an outsider; but you see how excited Basim gets when you say you liked the book he gave you, and suddenly, it’s like their opinion doesn’t even matter.
When the life of a Hidden One keeps you up at night –whether that be because of a nightmare or a stress-induced fever– Basim keeps you company. He knows the feeling all too well and refuses to leave you alone, unless that’s something you want. He will sneak into your room with a bowl of fruit and a book in hand.
“May I offer you a poem in these trying times”
Boom you’re sold
It’s a secret of his, but he likes writing poetry, too. He’ll die before admitting it though – and anyone who dares read his work will have to pry it from his cold, dead hands.
That being said, he might let you read something here and there (only the poems he’s revised a hundred times), but you have to swear that you won’t tell anyone.
You don’t mind. It’s like your little secret anyway.
Despite his preference for acts of service, he’s going to try to compliment you every now and then. You can always tell he’s being genuine, and when you thank him, he grants you a warm smile and a courteous nod.
He’s a very good listener. You could be talking about anything and he’d be listening intently, nodding along and asking questions. And nothing escapes him, really – he’s got an amazing memory and will remember your birthday, your favorite food, the friendly camel you met two weeks ago, or even the day you first saw fireworks.
He remembers that day well. The bright lights were sizzling and popping in the sky as you watched them, transfixed. You’d turned to face him with a big grin on your face, and in your excitement, asked him an obvious question: “Did you see that?”
He smiled and nodded, because of course he did.
He didn’t. He was looking at you.
But besides that, nothing escapes him!
He has a habit of shielding you from the elements. When it’s scorching hot, he hovers his hand over your face to keep the sun from your eyes. When it’s windy, he likes to use his stature to shelter you from the breeze. And on rainy days, he cocoons you in scarves and cloaks to keep you from getting wet.
Basim starts laughing more around you, and you both become incredibly closer. You have so many inside jokes that it’s hard to keep track of them, and perhaps it’s starting to get to the other Hidden Ones too. Roshan just sighs as she watches the two of you because you’re both oblivious fools.
He definitely starts coming out of his shell with time, even dropping a pick up line here and there. The first time it happened it caught you so off guard he panicked and lost all sense of his training in three seconds.
“Well, – Nehal is calling me. I’ll see you around.” and he tailed it out of there, tripping over a vase before regaining his footing and scrambling away.
He wouldn’t approach the subject again, and if you were in his proximity he would be as stiff as a board – until you made a move too. You flirted with him out of the blue and he just widened his eyes and pointed at you.
😳🫵🏽
Things change from there and he tries to flirt more (and he’s so dorky he makes everyone within audible distance groan and leave). You’re organizing the books at the bureau, the one place you probably frequent more than your own home, when he comes in.
“You come around here often?”
You give him a deadpan expression, because he can obviously do better than that, and he grimaces.
“Yeah. No more of that.”
Biggest supporter ever. If you speak another language other than Arabic, he wants to know all about it. He’s a smart man, he can learn a couple of expressions quickly, and pretty soon you’re having simple conversations in your tongue.
That being said, if you cuss someone out in said language he’ll probably try to remove you from the situation. He’s not keen on confrontation, especially with civilians, but if they wronged you in any way, he’d be all like “Yeah, what they said!” “And you better remember it!”
An absolute sucker for forehead kisses. He’s not very fond of PDA but he always kisses your temple when he has to leave or walk past you. It’s a ghostly touch, you almost don’t notice it, but it makes your cheeks flush every time.
Likes to hold your face in his hands and just look at you. It can end with him either smiling and kissing the corner of your mouth (on a good day) or pulling your hood down to blind you and ruin the moment (when he’s feeling a little silly). You call out his name and he just barks out a laugh as he climbs onto the rooftops.
He’s actually a little shit (affectionate) (derogatory)

You and Basim sat on the cliff in Alamut looking at the rest of the assassins from above ,the sunset was beautiful ,birds going back to their nest to turn in for the night , Basim was looking at the sunset thinking out loud “there’s something inside the is calling me in .i don’t what it is but I must know “ Basim said then he looked at u to see your reaction , u stood up looking angry “ absolutely not Basim! people who enter never come back ! I won’t lose you to some voice in ur head !” Basim stood up looking straight into ur eyes “Nehal said-“ “ WHO IS NEHAL BASIM THERE IS NO NEHAL AROUND ” You looked at Basim angry , he keeps talking about entering the temple over and over again but you always tell him no because you know who he will never come back , not as a dead body but as a different person .if he enters and know his own identity. You will lose your lover .” I’m tired of hearing about her and never see her” you said and turned your head . Both of you Sitting back down .
“ well- wait are you jealous.?” He said smirking “ I’m not ! And who would get jealous for you? Ew” YOU ARE , you loved basim since the day he became an assassin. Tho you’re not an assassin but a healer for them. Whenever they are injured your there for them. That’s what got you to love basim, a day never passes without him getting injured and coming to you. You and other assassins joke about him hurting himself just to see you “ I don’t know… maybe someone named (y/n)?” He said and was getting closer to you “ you know (y/n) ….sometimes I see how you look at me .and when I look back at you my heart goes crazy for you “ he took your hand into his. You looked at him, trying to see if he’s joking around. “Thought I’d never hear you say this” you said as your faces got closer until your lips touched. Both of you started to kiss passionately, your arms wrapped around his neck while his right is holding your face and the other is on your waist . as the kiss got heated , you started to remove each other’s clothes, basim clothes were annoying cuz they were layers of fabric . But yours were easy to get rid of , all he had to do was pull your dress up .
after getting his clothes off , he started to kiss and suck on your neck. Then he pulled,” are you sure about this ? Or do you want us to stop? “ he said “ don’t stop my love” you said while pulling him closer to you , his hand went to your chest , touching and pulling on your nibbles . You moaned loud ,and that made his cock throb, he can’t take it anymore he needs to be inside you ,inside that warm and tight virgin cunt “ I can’t hold it much longer… I need you” he said lining his throbbing cock to your entrance. “wait!… be gentle please I’m … a virgin “ you said , a little embarrassed “ don’t worry my dear. I will be gentle and there’s nothing to be. Embarrassed about.” He started to push himself in . ‘Oh god. She’s tight ‘ he thought to himself, he can’t hold back ! You’re so tight and your pussy is warm!. “ahh basim please.. ha. I need you so bad.” You said moaning as you run your hands through his hair. His soft and beautiful hair. He pushed until he’s all in. , filling you up with his cock . He started to move in and out slowly so you can get used to him , even tho he want to bully your tight hole and fill it up with his cum, make you his and have children with you. He can’t stop thinking about you carrying his child .that got him to start thrusting.”ohh your so tight. I think I can’t hold back .forgive if I hurt you “ after he sa Your eyes got wide as he started thrust faster, your moaning isn’t helping too, it keeps driving him crazy.
your bodies were hot .sweat rolling down ,foreheads touching, panting sound can be heard .basim thrusts were fast ,his cock going in and out in a hard and fast way but you enjoyed the feeling. His cock reaches places where it drives you crazy .”you like that ya rouhi? (My soul) do you want me to fill you up until your pregnant?” Basim said looking into your eyes . “ah… yes yes! keep going my love, i want to have your baby ” Your moans makes him thrust faster . It’s like music to his ears , he put his hand on your mouth to quit your moans so no one else can hear you moan for him. He’s a jealous guy after all. Feeling like he’s closer to your finish he started to suck on your neck , leaving some marks behind to mark your his only . “Ohhh yes baby right here… I’m about to cummm..” at this point your a mess . Panting, sweating and horny for him, “ i am too… cum with me my love . Let go” after few hard thrusts you both came .
“Ha… are you fine my love?” He said looking at you . Seeing if your hurt “I am fine …. That was crazy . I’ve never done this before.” You both broke out laughing . Looking at each other , basin put his hand on your lower belly.” I can’t wait to start a family with you love .” He kissed your cheek and got his scarf on you.”I love you” you smiled at him” and I love you “ you said and kissed his lips one more time “ let’s rest now my love , we have a long day tomorrow “ you said , standing up to dress you self , leaving basim behind. The voice inside his head is no longer there and the thought of entering the temple is no longer there. Guess it all needed a pussy to make him forget. He chuckled and started to dress up. Laying down beside you, he kissed your head and pulled you to him . Both falling asleep in each other’s arms.

Star-Crossed | Basim x OC | Chapter 5
The jinni's continues to torture Basim, and so are his feelings for Nashira.
TW: mental health issues. I wanted to try portray what I thought Basim’s visions would look like from a different person’s perspective.
The stars twinkled in the night sky over Anbar. At this time of night, most people had retreated into their homes, gathering around a fire and a meal with their loved ones. The smells of spices wafted through the air and took to the rooftops, where Basim and Nashira sat together.
Between them they shared a bowl of tebit, a canister of water, and of course, a pouch full of sweet juicy dates as they gazed at the stars together.
Over the course of a few months, they’d find time to share a meal and talk, much like how they’d do as youths. Though instead of studying, they spent their time talking about life. Asking and answering questions they had never considered as teenagers.
Tonight, Basim’s mind wandered away from conversation. He yawned, not having gotten much sleep in the nights before. The jinni continued its torment, both in sleep and in his waking moments. What was worse, he still had little answers for it.
Every now and again Nehal presented him with some strange tome or symbol that reminded them of the artifact they found at the Caliph’s Winter palace. Each of these strangely familiar findings left Basim with more questions than answers, and the jinni’s torment continued to take its toll every time.
He wasn’t sure how much longer he could deal with this. He needed answers soon.
“Basim?”
Hearing Nashira say his name brought him out of his thoughts.
She furrowed her brows, “Is everything alright with you?”
He nodded, “Everything’s fine.” He answered.
She placed a hand on his shoulder, “If there is something wrong, you can tell me. I’m right here.”
His eyes softened. For a moment, he contemplated telling her about the jinni, how it kept him up at night, how it haunted him in his dreams and his waking hours, and how it had done this for the majority of his life. How could he explain such a thing to her? Nashira was a woman of science, she didn’t believe in the supernatural. She’d probably write him off as crazy and have him admitted to the Bimaristan if she could.
He waved her off, “I’m fine, really,” He said, “I was just thinking.”
“About?” She pressed, giving him all her attention.
He chuckled, “I was thinking about something you had asked me before, about whether the stars controlled our fates. I realized, I never heard your answer for it.”
Nashira blinked, “You’re right,” She tapped her chin, “I suppose never did answer the question now that I think about it.”
She thought for a moment, “I think perhaps I misunderstood my father’s point of view on the subject.”
Basim tilted his head, “Explain?”
“When he said the stars controlled our fate, I assumed he meant we didn’t have free will to make our own choices in life. Naturally, I disagreed with that notion. Whether or not our actions have the intended consequences, we made those choices. Not every choice is equal, sometimes the consequences are minor, some major, but regardless we have the choice to go down a certain path or another. A parent can tell a child not to eat sweets before dinner. The child ultimately makes the decision to listen to the parent and not get what they want, or disobey them to get what they want at the expense of being punished. The parent can not control what that child does, only the child can do that for themselves.”
Basim listened intently to her as she spoke. She was making a good point.
“However, there are things that happen outside of our control,” She continued, “A natural disaster, a corrupt government, illness, death, and our paths become altered by these events. Our choices are limited to what is available to us from that point onward, though the choices presented may not be the ones we desire to have. Those events limit our free will, and it doesn’t stop there! You could be a child born to cruel parents, a person born into a poor family-”
She paused for a moment. “Or a young woman forced to marry when she does not want to…We may have the free will to choose how we act, but fate is often the determinant of the circumstances in which we make our choices. I think that is what he meant.”
Basim nodded, “I think that is quite insightful.”
She shrugged him off, “I’ve had a lot of time to think it over.”
They sat in silence as a question gnawed at Basim’s mind. Something he had wondered in his youth. Something he felt with unshakable conviction.
“Do you think certain things are meant to be?” He asked, “Like, are some things inevitable? Bound to happen regardless of circumstances?”
She raised a brow, “How do you mean?”
He leaned back on his hands, “I’m sure I was always bound to join the Hidden One’s. I was so eager to join them as a boy, that I don’t think anything could have stopped me. Or you. You’ve always been smart, and your father was a brilliant scholar. You were always meant to be an astronomer.”
Nashira hummed, “There’s a possibility but I don’t think anything is as simple as meant to be, Basim. At least, not as simple as you make it sound.”
“Oh?” He asked, “Care to argue your point?” He had a glint of mischief in his eyes, enjoying their debates.
A corner of Nashira’s mouth turned up, “Who are we to decide what is and isn’t meant to be? We aren’t omniscient beings, our viewpoint is limited to our own lives.”
“Didn’t you just say we have free will to make our own choices?” He smirked, thinking he got her.
“I also said some things are out of our control,” She held up a finger to his face, unable to stop herself from grinning as well, “Case in point, how we-”
Nashira’s grin faded suddenly.
Basim raised an eyebrow, “What is it?” he pressed, “Don’t hold your tongue, Nashira, I want to know what you think.”
“You’ll think it’s stupid.” She protested.
“If you are stupid, then I am completely hopeless,” He laughed, “Just tell me.”
“Are you sure?” She asked, still sounding unsure, “You won’t get upset?”
“I promise,” He said, waiting for her to continue.
Nashira sighed out a breath and took a moment before speaking again, “...There’s us, for example. You told me once you thought we were meant to be. Regardless if you or I believed it, that does not make it true."
Basim, taken aback at her moment of vulnerability and honesty, sat with that notion for a bit. Their once lively debate turned quiet as they sat under the stars. It was then that the feelings he kept at bay for months came bubbling to the surface. There they were, on a rooftop in Anbar, looking at the night sky together. Almost identical to the night they shared their first kiss together.
He looked at her, “I meant that, back then.” He said, holding her gaze.
His sincerity warmed her heart, “And I believed you. But if we were meant to be, well, we’d be together now.”
Basim nodded, “We are here now. That has to mean something, right?” He felt himself grow bolder as he went on, feeling himself drawn to her.
Nashira let out a shaky breath, still holding Basim’s gaze, not noticing how close they were getting to each other, “We are.” She whispered, her breath ghosting his lips that were only inches away from hers.
Slowly, hesitantly, they leaned into one another until their lips pressed in a shy kiss. The first one only lasted a few seconds, but the next one and the ones after that increased in vigor. They're hands started out locked at their sides until Basim snaked one to caress her jaw, and Nashira crept hers to the base of his neck. Their movements knocked off their respective head coverings, baring themselves to each other and the stars above.
Soon, the need for air became too much for them to ignore and they pulled away. Resting their foreheads on each other, satisfying their need to remain close to one another as they caught their breaths.
Nashira let out a shaky breath, “We can’t do this, Basim.”
Basim breathed out of his nose, “We can’t or we shouldn’t?” Those were very different things after all.
An ache grew in Nashira’s chest, “Omar will return soon.” She whispered.
“And I will go back to Alamut when my work here is done.” He sighed.
They pulled away from each other, adjusting their hood and head scarf. He should have known better; it seems, like always, Nashira was right again. He was a fool to think he could leave his feelings in the past while still maintaining a relationship with her. He was even more of a fool to think fate was on their side.
After a long silence, Basim stood up, “I should go.”
The sniffle he made almost went unnoticed by Nashira. If there were tears in his eyes, she wouldn’t know. His hood obscured any emotion he might have felt in that moment.
Her eyes blinked back tears, “Please,” She whispered, “Stay.”
He shook his head. He wanted to stay. He wanted to so badly. He knew if he did, he wouldn’t have the resolve to leave before they both did something unforgivable. Who knows what the outcome of that would be? His oath to the Hidden Ones was absolute, he’d have to uphold it. If they needed him to leave Baghdad, he’d have to do it, leaving Nashira to suffer the fallout of their actions.
He swallowed hard, “Good bye Nashira.” He said, not facing her.
Without another word, he was gone.
____________________________________________________________
Weeks later
It was dark again.
And cold.
Basim had been here before, too many times before.
The jinni used to haunt him in his sleep only, but lately…
Over these last few months, as Basim eliminated his targets, visions of the jinni haunted him while he was awake. Sometimes these manic episodes would last a few minutes, others a few hours.
This time was no different.
Basim’s eyes darted around, trying to keep his eyes on the jinni, or perhaps trying to wrest the visions away. He felt like had been walking forever, but to where he couldn’t tell.
His heart raced. His palms sweat. He clutched the front of his robes. He needed to be strong. He needed to sever his ties to the past like Master Roshan told him he needed to. He needed to let go of his life before the Hidden Ones. His father, Nehal, Jasib-
Nashira’s face flashed in his mind. Her soft eyes, her dark curls, her melodic voice whispering in his ear.
Curse him, why couldn’t he just let go of the past!
He would not be weak.
He would not be weak.
He would not be-
“Basim?”
______________________________________________________________
Nashira furrowed her brows, looking upon Basim.
She couldn't make sense of his expression. There was a wild look in his eyes as they darted everywhere, never seeming to focus on anything. He was covered in sweat and, in some places, blood, though she was confident it wasn’t his. Still, his jerky movements worried her.
He stumbled in here not too long ago, a great surprise to her who hadn’t seen him in weeks. She doubted she would see him again after that night in Anbar.
She stepped forward, “Basim?” She said his name again, hoping it would get his attention. Still, he looked around, not seeing her there right in front of him.
She tilted her head. How could he not see her?
He began hyperventilating, “Nehal?” he called out, sounding pathetic. His breath quickened like he was struggling for air. Now she was growing worried.
Nashira shook her head, “No…no it’s Nashira.” She reached out to touch him on the shoulder, only to quickly find out what a terrible idea that was when he roughly shoved her hand away.
“Stay away!” he shouted, backing away from her.
“Okay, okay!” She reassured, jumping back. Basim was much stronger than her. That made him dangerous in his current state of mind. She needed to be careful.
He grunted, clutching his head in his hands, falling to his knees, “It’s just the jinni again….just the jinni…” He said it over and over again but he wasn’t speaking to her. He was talking to himself.
What is this jinni, Nashira wondered. Was this what Basim was seeing and talking to? Was this what was making him act so erratically?
Nashira had heard stories of jinnis as a child, the same as any child in Baghdad. None of the stories spoke of jinni’s tormenting people in this way. Her father, a man of science, largely brushed off such supernatural notions as this, and she learned to do the same. Once again, Basim seemed to challenge everything she thought she understood.
Nashira crouched down, getting on his level and did what any good scientist would do. She observed him, to better understand.
“She’s not here…it’s not her…not ya habibti….” Basim choked back a cry, “I am….alone….”
Nashira had never seen Basim like this. For as long as she knew him, she never saw him break down like this. Never saw him look so…timid. His voice, usually deep and baritone, sounded so impossibly small.
How long had these spells….this jinni…been tormenting her sweet Basim?
Without thinking she reached a hand out towards him, but pulled back. What could she do? Could she really help in out of this state?
On second thought, why was she even thinking so hard about this? The longer she thought the more he’d suffer this spell. She needed to act now.
Nashira moved closer to him, carefully reaching a hand out to him. Her hand rested on his back, and relief washed over her when he did not shove her away.
Gently, she rubbed circles in his back, “It’s okay ya habibi,” She whispered, “I’m right here…you’re not alone.”
His breathing calmed down a bit. Slowly, Basim sat up from his hunched over position, coming face to face with Nashira. This time, he seemed to focus on her, at least in her direction because his stare looked as thorough as it was focused on something far away. In his vision, there was still darkness, but now there was a light shimmering in the distance. A light where her voice came pulled him to.
“Nashira?” He whimpered, praying she wasn’t just another illusion.
He sucked in a breath, feeling a soft palm cradle his face, “I’m right here, ya habibi.”
Basim leaned into her touch, the hair of his beard tickling her palm. She pushed the hood off his face so she could see him better. The dark circles under his eyes grew bigger since the last time she saw him, meaning he’d hardly slept. Or at least, his lack of sleep was growing worse than before. She assumed his lack of sleep was because of his Hidden One duties. Now she wondered if this jinni had something to do with it.
She ran her thumb along his cheek, giving him a comforting look as she did, “I’m right here, Basim. You don’t have to be scared.” Their foreheads were just inches away from each other, as if she had to show him she was right there with him.
Basim’s hand crept towards his face to cover her hand with his own, sighing at how soft it felt. She was real and in front of him, right within his reach.
His breathing slowed, the smoke cleared, and his eyes filled with light again and there she was. Her golden brown eyes staring back at him, seeing him. That both calmed and terrified him.
He crumbled into her, clutching her robes, afraid if he let go she’d vanish like smoke. He dug his face into her neck, forgetting himself around her. He felt his nerves calm when her hands carefully ran up and down his back in response.
They sat there, her holding him, him holding her, for what felt like an eternity. They had hoped as much, at least.
Before long, Nashira helped him up as best as she could. Despite his episode seeming to be over, his body was still stiff. That coupled with the dense amount of muscle he owned made it difficult for Nashira to aid him though she did so nonetheless.
“Come,” She straightened them both up, “You must rest. You look so tired…”
All Basim could do was nod in agreement, slowly making his way to the seating area Nashira led him to. There were several pillows scattered around the colorful rugs, and Basim suddenly became aware of how exhausted he was.
Nashira helped him lay down, as Basim was still shaken from what happened. She smoothed a hand over his heart, feeling it slow from her touch.
“Rest, Basim.” She said just above a whisper. Above him, glowing in the dim moonlight, Nashira looked so angelic to him. He wanted to remember every part of her face like this, bathed in moonlight under stars. That tender look in her eyes as they crinkled in the corners from her smile. The mark just above her eyebrow that danced with her expressions. He never wanted to forget her face.
When she moved to stand up, Basim wouldn’t let go of her hand, “Stay with me? Please?”
Nashira’s eyes widened, then softened, and she wordlessly laid down next to him. She wrapped her arms around his torso, laying her cheek on his back. She felt him place his hands over hers as he slowed his breathing, feeling sleep take over.
They lulled each other to sleep with their shallow breaths.
_____________________________________________________________
Basim awoke before Nashira.
It was morning, the sun just beginning to break above the minarets. The call to worship rang out in the distance. He blinked a few times from the sunlight breaking through the window, memories of the night before flooded his mind again.
He remembered the jinni, he remembered the nightmares, he remembered Nashira’s words and her touch.
I’m here, ya habibi.
His heart fluttered remembering those words. He looked down, seeing Nashira’s head resting on his chest as the sunlight shone on her hair and face. Her shallow breaths coming in and out of her nose brought a smile to his face. With his fingertips he inched his hand close to her hair to move a fallen lock awake from her forehead.
It terrified him that she knew now, about the jinni, about the nightmares…he still dreaded having to explain the extent of them. Despite seeing him in his worst state, she still just saw Basim. That alone made him feel safe being vulnerable. He hadn’t felt that in so long, not with the life he led now. Such a thing would usually see his demise.
Then he remembered where he was: laying in the arms of a married woman. A married woman whose entire life would go to ruin if she were caught in such a situation with a man other than her husband, regardless of the innocence of their interaction.
He slithered out of her grasp, hoping to make it to the window without waking her. He quickly pulled up his hood and began gathering his things.
He swallowed hard. What on earth was he thinking? He knew better than to come her. Pursuing this, pursuing her again would only cause more trouble for her. She had a life, a husband, and her passion to think of. He couldn’t risk ruining that for her. He wouldn’t. She deserved all the world had to offer and he wouldn’t get in the way of that.
As he made his way to the window, he heard a shuffle on the rug behind him.
"You're leaving?"
He gasped, looking back to see Nashira fully awake on the rug where they slept.
He hung his head, "...Yes." He muttered, memories of the night before flashing in his mind. He did not want to see the look of pity on her face.
Nashira shook her head, "No, please. Stay." She pleaded with him, "I don't want you to leave. Not again."
She got up from where she lay and slowly made her way to him, trying to get him to look at her, though his eyes seemed glued to the ground when she stood in front of him.
She took one of his hands in hers, "Do you remember what happened?"
Basim reluctantly nodded.
"How long has this been going on for?" She asked again.
He sighed, "As long as I can remember."
Nashira's eyes widened, "You have been suffering with these nightmares for that long?"
He finally looked up from the ground, nodding.
He didn't see pity in her eyes, instead, there was a deep sense of compassion there, and he suddenly felt stupid for thinking she'd be judgmental.
She furrowed her brows, "I knew there was something wrong but I never wanted to push you to say anything." she hung her head, remembering how torn up he looked when he arrived to her observatory, "Perhaps I should have..."
He shook his head, "No, no, I didn't want you to find out this way," He lifted her chin up, "Please do not blame yourself."
"Why didn't you want me to know?" She asked?
Basim shrugged his shoulders, "How could I expect you to understand something I can not even make sense of?"
Nashira's eyes grew sad as she listened to him speak.
"Ana majnun. A madman." he continued, "I've tried so hard to deal with them, to let go of the past, but I can't...I am sorry I burdened you with all of this...I'm sorry I never told you."
Nashira squeezed his hand, "Do not apologize. Being there for you has never felt like a burden.” She caressed his beard in her hand, “And you are not the only one who can't let go of the past."
Basim’s eyes softened as he held her gaze. He pulled her in for a hug, holding tight as if she’d go up in smoke if he let go. But she wouldn’t. She was real, and she was right there with him.
"No more secrets between us, ya habibi." she whispered in his ear, “You asked me once before if I loved Omar. I don’t. I love you, Basim.”
Basim swallowed hard as they pulled away, deciding to throw caution to the wind, "I love you too, Nashira. I never stopped."
Nashira's heart fluttered from his words. Regardless of what fate had in mind for them, she made the decision right then and there: She would chose Basim one hundred times over. Madman or not, nothing would stop her from loving him wholeheartedly.
Her hand gently guided him to her, pressing their lips together. His arms snakes around her waist. His kiss was as sweet and tender as she remembered, and all the others that followed after. Basim kissed her back like he couldn’t get close enough to her, like he’d wake up and realize this was all a dream.
They pulled apart, resting their foreheads together.
“Turqburni, Nashira.” His thumbs drew circles in the fabric of her robes on her back.
Nashira brought her arms around his shoulders, pulling him in for another deep kiss.
______________
Author’s Note: Tuqburni is an endearment phrase in Arabic that roughly translates to “you bury me.” According to my research, the idea behind the phrase is that the person loves someone so much, they’d rather die and be buried than live without their partner.

Star-Crossed | Basim x OC | Part 2
As Basim’s feelings for Nashira grow, he’s conflicted on how to tell her.
Basim came back every week after that.
Each week, he’d come back to the observatory to see Nashira, and every week she’d greet him with a plate of dates and a glass of water sitting at the same table. He always came through the window, despite Nashira telling him to use the front entrance. That bit always bewildered her.
The two spent their time eating, chatting, and scrolling old texts together. Khalid often taught classes or held occasional symposiums during Basim’s visits, leaving the two of them alone most of the time. Well, the two of them and Halah.
When it was late, they’d use the telescope and look at the stars. The stars were always their favorite topic of conversation. They studied them, wondered about them, even read poetry about them. In each other, they found another person who shared the same curiosities about the world around them.
In fact, they learned a lot about each other in their frequent meetings.
Nashira learned Basim was an orphan. He was the son of an architect and forced to grow up on the streets when his father passed. Despite this, he taught himself to read by sneaking into the libraries of the House of Wisdom with his friend Nehal, another orphan. He enjoyed reading poetry and epic tales of heroes like Gilgamesh and Hercules. She learned he did odd jobs for a man named Dervis in Anbar, and often pickpocketed just to get by.
She learned he idolized the Hidden Ones, a group of liberators who worked from the shadows. To Nashira, they were little more than an urban legend. To Basim, becoming one of them was his dream.
“They fight to better the lives of those who suffer most in Baghdad!” He said one day after telling Nashira about them, “One day I want to be one of them, someone who fights for liberation!”
“Why not become a scholar then?” She’d ask him, tilting her head, “scholars help better the world through knowledge! And knowledge is very liberating. That is why I want to be a teacher, like my Baba.”
Basim shrugged. The pursuit of knowledge was a noble passion he respected. Still, as much as he enjoyed learning with books, he much preferred to see everything he was reading about. “Why stay in here studying when the whole world awaits out there?” He gestures towards the window.
Nashira smirked, “Ah,” she tapped her chin, “A liberator and an adventurer. Sounds like Gilgamesh.” She winked.
Basim blinked and laughed. He could not argue with that.
One thing she knew for sure was that Basim was as quick-witted as he was mischievous.
Sometimes, to tease her, he’d steal something off her person and wait to see how long it took her to notice.
“Where is my magnifying glass?” She wondered one day, patting her pockets and glancing around the table. It wasn’t like her to misplace something, especially her trusty magnifying glass. She couldn't read well without it.
She let out a sigh upon hearing a snicker from Basim. Nashira placed a hand on her hip as he pulled the item out of his pocket.
He held up the magnifying glass, “Looking for this?” He held it up higher when she lunged for it, “It took you a whole hour to notice this time. That’s a new record for me!” He laughed.
Nashira rolled her eyes, but couldn’t stop herself from grinning, “Give it back Basim!” He kept holding it just out of reach for her height, as he always did when they played this game.
Basim learned Nashira was incredibly smart. She knew everything there was to know about stars, the moon, and the planets above. She could tell exactly what time of year it was just by looking at the night sky and didn’t need a counter when doing complicated math problems. Sometimes she even corrected her fathers math work.
Speaking of Khalid, Basim learned she loved her father more than anyone (except maybe Halah).
Despite being a young woman of science, she often wondered if the stars meant something more about the universe.
“Do you think the stars control your fate?” She asked him out of the blue one day.
Basim tilted his head. These philosophical conversations weren’t rare between them by any means. Usually he’d have something to add to the discussion, but Nashira stumped him with this one.
“Perhaps?….Or, maybe not, give me a minute.” He thought hard on the question as they sat by the telescope in the middle of the observatory.
She laughed, “Sorry, was that too much? My Baba and I debate on this topic quite often. Baba thinks they do. I am not so sure. Then again, I suppose he’s right to say I haven’t lived enough life to figure that out,” she giggled “I wanted to see how someone else my age felt about it so I could come up with an answer for him.”
Above all else, he learned she was a persistent optimist.
“This scarf is so old, and worn.” Basim would say when Nashira complimented it one day.
Nashira took a look at it, “It’s lasted you this long. It’s well made and sturdy.”
“This equation is too difficult.” Basim said with a huff.
Nashira smiled, “Gives us the opportunity to learn something new.”
“This weather is terrible,” Basim said one day during a visit when the rains came.
“But it will be good for the farmers!” She answered without missing a beat.
Basim liked that about her. Sometimes he needed that more than he was willing to let on.
What drew him to Nashira the most was her compassion. In all their interactions, she never made him feel bad for being a thief or being from the slums. She treated him with respect despite his lower social class. Even when correcting his math equations, she never talked down to him. She treated him like an equal.
Before long, Basim visited not just to learn about stars or study mathematics, but to spend as much time as possible with Nashira. Every second with her was precious to him. When he could, he’d find ways to stay with her longer, like doing double the work Dervis requested of him so he wouldn’t have to work on the days he went to the observatory.
It seemed everything about her interested him. He took notice of things he never thought he’d care about: the way her melodic voice sent a chill down his spine, the way her eyes lit up when she correctly mapped another star in the sky, the way her dark curls brushed past her cheeks, or how the mark above her eyebrow would dance with her expressions.
He especially loved the way she raised her eyebrow and smirked when he was being cheeky with her.
He found himself filling whatever free time he had with her, and she in return filled his every thought.
The only person who knew about Nashira was of course Nehal.
“She’s amazing,” He said one night while on the rooftops of Baghdad, “She’s a brilliant astronomer, and more beautiful than I can describe in words.” He dreamily sighed as an image of Nashira’s face entered his mind.
Nehal swallowed a date, “And she has the tastiest treats.”
Basim rolled his eyes, “You know, if you came with me to the observatory, we could enjoy them together. She said it was alright if you came.” He snatched the bag away from her.
Nehal shrugged, “No need, as long as she keeps sending you home with more tasty treats, I get to enjoy them without boring myself with math and astronomy.”
Nashira had asked about Nehal many times, and was eager to meet her. Anytime Basim brought it up to Nehal, she’d always have something else more important to do, or so she’d say.
Basim took a deep breath of the night air, gazing up at the stars, “I think I will tell her how I feel. I can tell there is…something between us.”
Nehal made a face, “I wouldn’t get your hopes up, ya sadeeqi. You are still just a street thief, dirty feet and all.” She said, eating another date, “She’ll probably marry a scholar or a wealthy merchant one day.”
Basim shook his head, “You don’t understand, when she looks at me she doesn’t see a street thief, she just sees me for me.”
Sometimes when they’d study maps, he’d look up from his work and see her looking back at him. He had received many looks in Anbar: most of them of disdain and disgust from passers-by, or fury from the guards. But when Nashira looked at him, there was a softness and tenderness that he had not seen from anyone in years.
His heart fluttered just thinking about it. It was as if the poems he read as a child about love and devotion to another person were making sense to him now.
“Besides,” he continued, “I won’t be a street thief forever.” More and more, his wish to join the Hidden Ones grew, at the very least so he could one day show Nashira all the things they’d read about together in books. He looked forward to the day he could show her the world. How wonderful would it be to see her face light up with wonder, the way it did when they learned something new in their studies?
Nehal shrugged, “Maybe so, but obviously this girl has more than she needs,” She shook the little bag of dates she swiped from Basim, “What exactly do you have to offer her? Not to mention the jinni. If being a thief doesn’t ruin your chances, that bit of information certainly will.”
Basim tensed up at the mention of the jinni. For years it plagued him with nightmares that would leave him panicked and soaked in sweat. He hadn’t brought it up to Nashira at all, partly because he forgot about the nightmares when he was with her. Mostly, because he feared what she would think of him.
Nehal’s eyes softened upon seeing Basim’s expression. She placed a hand on his shoulder, “I don’t say this to be mean, Basim. I just don’t want to see you get hurt. I’m sure your friend is very kind, but don’t confuse that kindness for affection.”
Basim frowned but nodded. He knew Nehal cared, despite the harshness of her words. He figured there was some truth to them. After all, he was just a common street thief.
A street thief with a future that was unclear.
Could a girl like her really feel the same about him? Basim swallowed hard, not sure if he wanted to find out too soon. Perhaps it was best to wait a bit longer until he was sure.
He eyed a nearby stall in one of the markets that sold flowers and expensive perfumes. He heard of young men leaving little gifts for girls they liked in secret before confessing their feelings. As small as those gifts were, however, things like perfumes and flowers cost a great deal of coin.
Basim reached into his pockets, seeing they were empty as usual. Basim looked back at the stall and smirked. He had other means to get gifts.
——————————————————————————
Over the next few weeks, Nashira kept finding little gifts around the observatory.
It started out when she’d find little pressed flowers in her books. Sometimes they were white savories, sometimes jasmine, sometimes roses. All of them were beautiful. She kept them in a little drawer in her desk.
Then, it was candied fruits. She’d find them on her desk after her usual afternoon trip to the library. Sometimes there were little tins of dried fish for Halah. Sometimes it was excerpts of her favorite poems. Every week it was something different.
She asked her father if he was the one leaving gifts, and he denied this. When she showed him all the presents she found, he threw his head back and let out a hearty chuckle.
“It seems someone around here is trying to win your affection, ya habibti. I wonder who it could be?” He stroked his graying beard with a smile.
She had her suspicions. It could have been Omar, one of her father’s best students. He often hung back after lectures to talk with Khalid, and ever so often he’d steal glances at Nashira. He came from a wealthy merchant family and would surely be able to afford such gifts.
It could be Mamoud, who always tried talking to her while studying in the library. He’d earn them many harsh looks and a shushing from the elders.
Then of course there was Basim.
He came to visit her every week, and she often found the gifts shortly after he left. Her wishful thinking entertained this idea, but her logic said otherwise. There was no way he could afford these gifts.
“He could be stealing them…” She thought as she walked to the observatory one night after her father’s symposium.
Of the three boys she suspected, the thought of it being Basim made her heart flutter. She had heard rumors about boys from Anbar, how they were rough around the edges and rude. Basim did indeed have a bit of an edge to him. She figured one had to in order to make it on the streets of Bagdad. While he could be a bit cheeky at times, he was also incredibly sweet and kind-hearted. Leaving gifts definitely seemed like the kind of thing he’d do.
She shook the thought out of her head, “No…he wouldn’t. Why would he risk angering the guards just for me?”
Basim had better things to worry about. He had to focus on survival, he didn’t have time to daydream about romance like she did. There was no doubt the two of them were very different in many ways: a street urchin and a scholar’s daughter. Yet, those differences never mattered to Nashira because they were alike in all the important ways. Though whether Basim felt the same was unknown to her.
Upon entering the observatory, she gasped when she caught Basim just about to sneak out of the window.
“Basim?” Nashira set down her books on her desk.
Basim halted in place, “H-hi Nashira!” He stuttered, climbing down from the window, “How was Khalid’s symposium?”
Nashira noticed a small velvet box on her desk.
She pointed to it, “What's this?”
Basim blinked, “What? That?” He feigned ignorance, “That was there when I got here. Wonder who put that there?” He stroked his chin the way he’d seen Dervis do when lost in thought.
Nashira gave him a look and placed her hands on her hips, raising an eyebrow. A look that said “stop with games already.”
Basim sighed, “It's for you.” He said sheepishly. He carefully walked forward, stopping when he was right in front of her. Halah jumped down from the table, and rubbed herself on his legs to greet him.
“So then it was you sending me all those gifts.” She said, “But…why?”
He swallowed hard, taking a deep breath to calm his heart rate. He had been caught, now was as good a time as any to tell her.
“You asked me once if I thought the stars controlled our fates.” He said, “I didn’t have an answer then, but…now I do.”
He began to pace, “Lately I can’t help but feel our meeting was fate because…well because being around you feels so right. Like we were meant to be.” he nervously clasped his hands behind his back.
She tilted her head, “What are you saying?”
Basim swallowed hard, feeling a heat creep up his neck at what he was about to say, “I really like you, Nashira…and I wanted to show you how much I care about you. That’s why I got you this.”
He took the box from her hands and opened it, revealing a brilliant astrolabe, decorated with sapphires. There were stars and moons etched on the inside as well. Something so beautifully crafted would cost a fortune, even for the wealthiest of Baghdad’s citizens. How is it that Basim got his hands on one?
“Oh Basim…” Nashira’s eyes grew wide, her mouth hanging open with shock.
He stole this. He had been stealing all the other gifts too. He was putting himself in danger for her.
“Do you like it? I had my eye on it for a long time. It made me think of you.” He explained, holding it up for her to look at.
She gently placed her hand over the one holding the astrolabe, “Basim…did you steal this?” She asked, looking him straight in the eye.
He nodded, “Of course I did,” His shoulders slumped, “Does… that upset you?”
Her eyebrows furrowed, “It's beautiful and I’m truly touched but… you shouldn’t have done this.” She took the astrolabe and placed it back in the box, “You should trade this for coins to buy yourself food. I don’t want any more gifts, okay?”
Basim frowned, “O-oh…okay.”
He placed the astrolabe in his pocket, slowly backing away from her. He felt a pit form in his stomach, suddenly feeling silly for thinking she’d return his affection. The only thing he wanted to do was crawl into a hole and hide.
After some silence, she realized what it sounded like she meant, “I-I didn’t mean-“
“It’s okay, you don’t have to say it. I understand.” He said, though still not looking her in the eye. He couldn’t bring himself to say, “Really, I do. I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable.”
Basim sounded like he was trying to convince himself of this as much as he tried to convince her. Nashira shook her head, “You didn’t make me feel uncomfortable-“
“I’m really okay, Nashira,” He insisted, “You don’t have to make me feel better.”
He didn’t mean to interrupt her, he simply couldn’t let himself get his hopes up and confuse her kindness for affection.
He kept hearing Nehal’s words echo in his mind.
“At the end of the day, you’re just a street thief.”
“Basim?” Nashira said his name just above a whisper. He wasn’t okay, she could tell. Worry set in when he refused to look at her. Why wasn’t he looking at her? He always looked her in the eye when she spoke.
Basim quickly made his way toward the window, “I have to go. I’m sorry.”
She followed him, “You’re leaving already? But, you just got here.” She protested as she watched him climb down the ledge.
“Basim!” She called after him, watching as he dashed away into the night.
——————————————————————————
Two weeks passed and Basim hadn’t been back to the observatory since.
He wanted to return. Yet every time he had the thought, he replayed that night in his mind. Whenever he thought of it, that same pit in his stomach would form and he couldn’t bear the thought. It embarrassed him. He felt like a fool to think a scholar’s daughter would ever feel the same for a common street thief.
He’d have an easier time trying to reach for a star in the sky.
That incident coupled with the incessant jinni kept Basim from getting much sleep.
During the day threw himself into his work, doing whatever Dervis sent his way. It helped get his mind off things, but it also gave him a reason to avoid going to the House of Wisdom. However at night, especially if he could catch a glimpse of the stars from the tiny window in his hideout, he thought only of Nashira.
It wasn’t all bad, he supposed. Thinking about her all night beat being tortured by the jinni.
He yawned as he turned the corner, walking towards Dervis’s home, but froze in place when it came into view. In addition to the many children who played in the area, and their mothers idly did their many tasks, there in front of the shop was Dervis speaking to a young woman in a brilliant blue kameez.
Nashira.
Basim gulped, slowly backing up with the hope they wouldn’t see him. He backed up right into a clay flower pot, sending it to the ground with a loud crash.
“Nice going Basim…” He cursed at himself.
Dervis and Nashira turned their heads in his direction, “Ah, here he comes right now. Basim!” Dervis motioned for him to come hither.
The children came flooding to him, all of them trying to get the attention of their favorite beloved street thief. Basim couldn’t help but notice how the children all had dates in their hands and in their mouths.
Nashira lit up upon seeing Basim. She quickly scurried towards him. However, the look of tenderness in her eye was replaced with something else, something different.
Anger?
She placed her hands on her hips, “Why are you avoiding me?” She demanded, looking him dead into his eyes.
The children made a unified “Oooooo!” Sound.
“What are you doing in Anbar?” Basim asked, “It’s too dangerous for you.”
She huffed, “I don’t care! You haven’t been to the observatory in weeks,” She smacked his shoulder repeatedly.
“Ouch Nashira!” He grabbed her hand to get her to stop, still, her anger persisted.
“I thought you had been thrown in the Shurta! Or killed!” She sniffled. That’s when Basim noticed her face, while indeed very upset, it didn’t match her eyes welling with tears.
He furrowed his brow and rubbed his shoulder, “You were worried about me?”
She sniffled and used her sleeve to dry her eyes, “Of course I was.” She glanced around, seeing a few nosy mothers and small children giggling amongst themselves at the two of them, "Is there a place we can talk?” she whispered to him.
Basim nodded, “My home isn’t far from here. We can go together.” He said, leading her in that direction.
They walked in silence for some time, then Basim cleared his throat, finding the courage to speak. They tried not paying attention to the stares they received walking down the streets together. They certainly made an odd looking pair.
“I’m sorry for worrying you.” He said, matching her their strides as they
Nashira glanced at him, “That’s okay…now that I know you’re alright.”

Nashira slowly walked into Basims home.
It was small and quaint, with only a small palette in the corner for sleep. He really didn’t have much. There were old tools she figured must have belonged to his father, a few changes of clothes, and various scraps of fabric meant to repair them. He had few clay pots to cook when he had the means to. Everything was organized in a way that showed he had great care for what he did have.
He closed the door behind them, turning to face her “It isn’t much, but make yourself at home.”
She smiled softly, “It’s lovely. I can see you put a lot of care here.”
She looked upon Basim’s face, taking notice of the dark circles there. He always had them, but they never seemed to match his usually lighthearted demeanor around her. Now they seemed to weigh him down.
“You look exhausted, are you alright?” She asked. Perhaps coming was a bad idea after all, he clearly needed rest.
“I’m fine Nashira, it’s just the jinni that’s been haunting me every night for as long as I can remember,” He thought to himself.
Basim nodded, “I’m fine.” He said aloud, “Just a bit tired from working, that’s all.” He relaxed some when she seemed satisfied with that answer.
He continued, “To be honest…I didn’t want you seeing this place at all.” He said, referring to his hideout.
She tilted her head, “Why?” She began to ask until seeing the look of shame on his face.
She sighed, “Basim…do you think I have a problem with you….living how you do? Being from here? Be honest.” She gestured all around her.
Basim felt himself tense at her words, “How could you not?”
Her shoulders fell, “Is it…because I didn’t accept your gift?” She asked.
Basim didn’t answer, mainly because it seemed silly to admit now, but his face said it all.
She let out a nervous breath, “I-I didn’t mean I did not feel the same way as you.” She looked him in the eye, “I do, Basim.”
His eyes widened, “You do?”
She nodded, giving him a shy smile. That’s when he noticed the light red dusting her cheeks and the way she seemed to wring her hands. She was nervous. He had never known her to be nervous.
His heart thumped in his chest, “But…why didn’t you tell me?”
She scoffed, “Why didn’t you tell me?” She placed her hands on her hips.
“Why didn’t I, a street thief, tell you, a scholar’s daughter, that I have feelings for you?” He balked, “Do you wonder why I always come through the window for our visits? Because the stewards of the House of Wisdom shoo me away when I try to go through the front entrance. Go back with the rats where you belong, they say. I have to sneak into the same places you get to be without question.” His voice wavered as he spoke, “At the end of the day I’m just a thief, and you…you will always be out of my reach.”
When he finished, Nashira took his hand in hers and pulled him towards her. She placed a kiss on his cheek. Basim sputtered, then went silent. He had no doubt his face was entirely red.
Nashira gave him a shy smile, “I’m not out of your reach, Basim. I’m right here.” She said, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you how I felt either. I just figured you had better things to think about than me. That’s why I told you to stop with the gifts, so you wouldn’t get hurt trying to steal for me.”
Basim touched the spot she kissed on his cheek, smiling as he did. He reached forward to embrace her, holding her tight in a hug. Her heart fluttered at the action. He held her like he was afraid to let go. She definitely didn’t want him to let her go any time soon.
“You’re all I think about Nashira.” he whispered in her ear.
Nashira returned the hug, melting into his arms, “I missed you Basim.”
He smiled “I missed you too. So much.”
——————————————————————————-
That night, Basim and Nashira gazed at the stars from the rooftops of Anbar.
She let out an airy sigh, “The stars are just as beautiful here as they are in my father’s observatory” She remarked.
She figured her father was wondering where she was, and she figured she’d deal with that when the time came. For now, she wanted to make up for lost time with Basim.
Basim smiled at her softly, watching her gaze up at the stars above. He tucked a wayward curl behind her ear, “One day, I’ll take you wherever you want to see the stars. Anywhere in the world.” He said.
She turned her head to face him, smiling as she did. He felt butterflies in his stomach when her hand touched his.
Her eyelashes fluttered against her cheeks as she looked up at him, smiling, “It doesn’t matter where we see them. As long as it’s just you and me, I’ll be happy anywhere.”
Basim grinned. He decided right then and there that he didn’t ever want to be without this girl. No matter what his future held, he wanted Nashira at his side.
She pointed ahead of them, “Look! A shooting star!” She closed her eyes tight for a few seconds.
She opened them, looked at Basim, “Did you make a wish?”
He nodded, “I did.”
She raised a brow, “What did you wish for?”
He smiled, holding up their clasped together hands, “It already came true.”
Her tummy filled with butterflies.
Basim’s stomach flipped as he thought about what he wanted to say to her. The words he wanted to say to her for longer than he’d like to admit. Was he being too hasty? Was it just youthful passion? He didn’t know the answers to those questions, all he knew was that whatever he was feeling, it was real.
He swallowed hard, “Nashira?”
She tilted her head slightly as she looked up at him.
He let out a breath, “I love you.”
She let out a small gasp, then her face softened from his words that made Basim’s anxiousness instantly go away.
“I love you too, Basim ibn Ishaq,” she said, leaning closer to him, batting her half lidded eyes at him
It didn’t take long for Basim to catch on. He looked around to make sure no one was around to see them. No guards, no nosy gossipers, no Nehal to tease him when he was done. Then, with his other hand, he took her chin in his fingers and lifted it up to bring their lips together for the very first time.
They shared their first kiss under the stars. One they hoped would become the first of many.
But the stars are always fickle. And fate had other plans.
