I’m gonna say the one thing that I feel like everyone will agree on: season 3’s soundtrack is considerably weaker than season 1 and season 2.

Limsa and Goobbue Hunting
Tumblr media
It’s hard to speak of Limsa Lominsa without broaching the subject of piracy. The city state started its life as a safe-port for the various pirate crews and fleets that troubled the seas around Eorzea and even beyond to places like Thavnair and (in rare cases) Kugane.
In the modern age they are the alliance’s de facto naval presence. No force in Eorzea can come close to matching the sheer number of vessels under the admiral’s command, save perhaps East Aldenard Trading. Their primary military force is the Maelstrom Grand Company, which combines the Knights of the Barracuda and conscripted pirates and adventurers. This lends a certain wildness to their tactics that makes the Maelstrom formidable in their unpredictability.
Tumblr media
As a Thalassocracy, Limsa Lominsa is the governmental seat for coastal communities all over the Rhotano sea and La Noscea. The cultural hallmarks of construction and aesthetic are striking in their fusion of piratical practicality and stark beauty. Most communities are shining white, built from the white limestone and sandstone that makes up the cliffs of the local islands. Many locations, including Limsa herself, are built out over the open water on hoodoos and columns rising out of the water. The sight of the city stretched over dozens of trunk-like pillars and laced over with bridges has earned Limsa Lominsa the nickname The Navigator’s Veil.
I arrived by ferry early in the morning and had a full day to explore the city, quickly becoming lost in the thick knot of bridges and sky-ways. Ships hoisted from the water created make-shift buildings, while in other cases the hoodoos were carved hollow to form luxurious cave dwellings. Even as used to the desert sun as I am, though, I found that the glare of light off the white stone eventually started to make my head hurt and I took my wanderings inside. Fortunately, several of the pillars are large enough to constitute entire neighborhoods or boroughs once hollowed out. I found myself exploring vast indoor marketplaces, guild halls, training areas, and plazas. All of these smelled wonderfully of the myriad spices on sale, fish, linseed oil, and salt. Even with the press of sweaty bodies, it was hard to find a corner of the city that was not a bouquet of pleasant aromas.
Tumblr media
My favorite phenomenon was the wave-talk. Some trick of the hollow stone pillars and the waves that beat on them continually created hallways that rumbled and roared with the sounds of the ocean. I could stand still and close my eyes and listen—and a less credulous mage might start to swear they could hear speech. Indeed, I almost felt the ocean talking to me in a language I could nearly understand. It was like I heard words that were just beyond the tip of my tongue, some ancient syntax studied as a child and since long forgotten. It reminded me of the wind sweeping through the trees of the Shroud in that sense.
Tumblr media
I registered my name as a visitor with the Arcanist’s guild and purchased a few books for study, but did not have time to do much more than watch a handful of students practicing arcanima. Loathe as I am to pass on seeing forms of magic I’ve not played with, I have a job to do. I’ve been asked to track and slay a Goobbue causing trouble for some vineyards east of Limsa, so in the afternoon I loaded Telemachus’ saddle bags with fresh supplies bought in the port and set off on the road. Personal entry: Sea travel must be one of Hells used to punish the sinful. I had to walk as much to steady my own stomach as to sate my curiosity. An apothecary recognized my green gills when I stepped off the boat and sold me some herbal gum to chew for what I suspect was entirely too much money. Flipping hells, if I hadn’t been about to lose my breakfast, I might not have paid.
Tumblr media
I’ve received a call on my link pearl asking me to travel back to Ishgard with all haste. I am to join a handful of other Drakes in investigating something in the Brume. Apparently there are deaths among the refugee population. I said yes, of course. I wouldn’t be able to look mama and papa in the eyes if I refused to help a fellow refugee. I’m going to try to purchase a ticket on an airship. Admiral Bloefhiswyn has supposedly relaxed travel restrictions on air travel.
I’m stuck in my head. The whole trip across Vylbrand I’ve had hardly a thought for anything but those refugees in Ishgard. It had been nearly a year before my family was allowed to live inside Ul’Dah’s walls and that was only once I’d won sponsorship to learn at the Ossuary. There are children I grew up with whose families still live in the tent city outside the Gate of Nald. I remember crime families taking advantage of those of us desperate for work and without the skills of an artisan. Papa stayed away by stroke of luck, but Didiru wasn’t so lucky. Her death still hurts even after four years. I only wish we’d found the body. Then at least I could have given her an honorable funeral.
I met my contact in Aleport after I took care of the Goobbue. There wasn’t much in the way of gil, but the man had a few good bottles of wine to sweeten the pot. I know naught of wine but the Roe waitress serving us seemed surprised by the vintage. I think I can bribe my way on to an airship with one.

Despite being orphaned with his older brother San-Gwong, eight year old Hui Sing-Lung was living a fairly idyllic and happy life with his best friend Arcelia Frascona while living in a Jesuit mission in Guangzhou (Canton), China. But on a cold winter's day in 1710, a Devil rose from the sea and destroyed much of the port town with seven yaogaui representing human vice stealing souls left and right. As the Jesuit mission burns down, Sing-Lung witnesses the demon dubbed Xurong brutally slay San-Gwong right before his eyes. It is through the heroic actions of Captain Mortimer Hurley that Sing-Lung was rescued and removed from Guangzhou before he would be killed too... though the Crew of the Barracuda would lose its Captain. Forever indebted for the rescue, Sing-Lung joins the Barracuda under the newly captained Ravyn Hurley to the ends of the earth, hoping to move on from the tragedies of Guangzhou...
Until August 18, 1721, in Kingston, Jamaica. As Sing and the rest of the Barracuda attempt a normal life, the magic compass la Brujula has been found, and the Voyage of the Devil's Eye begins. Sing-Lung then changes his initial plans to move on from his loss in Guangzhou.... and focuses on revenge against Xurong--aka Pride--aka Wang Ruixiong--for the murder of San-Gwong.
Updated/redrawn concept artwork of Sing-Lung from 2005. The bobcut was CappnRob's idea, which gives Sing-Lung a more unique silhouette.

Next Chapter for Zen’s quest, under the cut
CHAPTER 3: Seal Rock Skirmish
Awakening in Limsa Lominsa once again, Zentheias only recalls the mysterious voice returning to speak about "The Echo ". He talks with Baderon and learns that Blackburn/G’raha Tia carried him there and left a message on a note, telling him to visit the Scions of Seventh Dawn located in the Merchant's Ward of Ul'dah, with the password "wild rose". Zenthy certainly will, but not before heading to Seal Rock to meet up again with Y'shtola, keep the integrity of the Barracudas intact, and keep the national treasure in its homeland.
Which the city-state recognizes is super heroic and nice of him to do, especially with no particular loyalty. These dunderheads just assumed he was there to cause trouble again, but that was not so. In fact, Zenthy has the brilliant idea of calling out the Yellow Jackets AND some Knights of Barracuda for just such an occasion!
So Zentheias, Y'shtola, the Barracudas and the Yellow Jackets have an epic sea battle against Commodore Roth, Emerick, the Sahagin and the Barracudas under Roth's command, and wrap up the quest. Sick. Zentheias bids a farewell ‘till we meet again to Y’shtola and Baderon...and then finally remembers his order that he still needs to pick up! He goes to do that. Next, he’s off to Ul’dah, the desert nation. ...He immediately hates it, and needs some water.
But additionally, he ended up in an altercation with some thugs - led by Ungust - whom harassed a refugee woman in the streets. Realizing Zentheias had used the Echo to clear her name, Thancred invited him to meet the Antecedent in the Waking Sands merchant ward. Zenthy met Minfilia there, who introduced the other Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Blackburn/G’raha was there to welcome him along with all the other members. That was very nice. ^w^ Because Minfilia is blessed with the Echo as well, she is the first to recognize Zentheias as a destined hero, but strangely, not the Warrior of Light (one of the adventurers of a past age who were saved by Louisoix). Minfilia directs Zentheias on a number of missions as a Scion, often sending him to slay Primals as well as to keep the peace. Because he’s just so good at both of those things! Very cool job. The very first mission was to assist Thancred in discovering who was responsible for the missing refugees in Camp Drybone...

since the story’s changed so much can you tell us something that the original sorry was going to have that this one doesn’t?
in the original story, the first season was going to be A LOT shorter, mainly because I didn’t know how long certain scenes would take. At one point I assumed that the fist season would only be ten episodes.
The scene where Susca attempts to slay Kappa was originally going to take place outside of the castle, and then it changed to the dungeon, until the final version, it changed to being in the ceremony room.
Instead of being locked in the dungeon, Siren was originally going to be taken away by guards to his room. But after fleshing out the guards more, I realized they would not be so willing to blindly follow Susca’s orders. So I changed it to Susca locking Siren up away from everyone else’s sight.
also originally Skiff was going to free Siren from the dudgeon, however I changed it so that Siren could have a cool growth moment with symbolism involving his jewelry. I think it was important that he freed himself, rather than someone saving him.
Also originally the stalactite eater did not exist. Susca was going to slay the barracudas in the dungeon, but I realized that was more violent that I wanted her character to be. So I made the stalactite eater to kill off the barracudas and then I figured it would be cool if that creature appeared again while they were trying to escape.
Lots of stuff like this resulted in a much longer season lol.

Oral Tradition
It was a little past midnight as the weary-eyed students picked up their luggage from the jet. The entire back of the plane had lifted up and a conveyor belt rolled out the attack aircraft they would be using  for the mission. It was like the big Beluga whale plane was giving birth to a killer barracuda.
The jet was outfitted with high powered explosives. The outer shell was made of a material that would shatter and turn into thousands of razor blades, just like the Storm Torpedo had shattered Norton. Huge turrets were armed not with bullets but with thousands of needle-like projectiles like how the sky weapon had devastated Herzog. It was as if the Gear Department had taken all the technology that had been used against the dragons in recent years and put it all in one airborne package.
Brian stood, his duffle bag over one shoulder, watching Ru’Yi collect her things. She seemed sleepy but still bright and happy. He didn’t try to say hi. Their last encounter was humiliating enough.
It has always understood that through training and learning, even the least of the Hybrids could excel in all sorts of missions in regards to dragonslaying. From the beginning, Brian had distinguished himself in that regard. But at the same time, it was understood that pedigree and bloodline could close the gap between lack of education and training.
He was sure she didn’t mean anything by it personally. She just laid out the facts to him. Ru’Yi’s father and her mother were confirmed slayers of Dragon Kings. She had a better pedigree than even the Executive Department head. Bloodline wasn’t everything, but it was one of the ways you were evaluated. Even though she was not nearly as skilled as the rest, the crowd around her couldn’t help but part now that she had so clearly conveyed to them who exactly she was. She wasn’t even aware of their reverence. She just smiled and nodded in surprise assuming they were being chivalrous when they offered to carry her bags.
He should have taken the hint from his friend Aaron but she definitely put him in his place in her own way. He had no right object any longer.
Aaron stayed next to him, grinning ear to ear.  He raised his face to the warm sea breeze and sighed. “You look like a kicked dog. Cheer up will you?”
He tilted his head to him. “Sure.”
A uniformed woman, tall, with turtle shell glasses, stepped in front of them all. A small smile graced her lips. Her skin was an exceptionally dark and silky ebony. “I’ll be taking you to your accommodations. Please follow me.” Without waiting for confirmation, she turned and started to lead them down a narrow staircase to a passageway below deck.
“Welcome to the Aido-Hwedo. For the unfamiliar, she is a Yorktown-class Aircraft carrier, staffed with 1,273 persons, not including yourselves. We sail for months at a time patrolling for any sign of dragon activity. We are currently carrying 76 aircraft: 10 Seahawk helicopters, 35 Hornets and 31 Super Hornets. Your fighter the Javelin will be making the entry into the weather anomaly but we are here to support you in any way possible. The goal of this mission will be maximum air superiority.”
Despite the age of the vessel, everything was new and state of the art. The halls were spacious enough for them to walk unobstructed even as it was bustling with people. “My name is Lieutenant Summer Hart and I’m going to be your main point of contact.” She turned on her heel to face them. “This cooperation is based on the association with Mr. Baldwin as well as on the goodwill furnished by Principal Anjou. You are representatives and ambassadors here. So don’t do anything to make Anjou sigh in heaven.” She paused a moment and then smiled. “Oh… who am I kidding, we all know he’s in Hell.”
A ripple of soft laughter came from the group. They all had no experience with Anjou in real life, but his reputation for ruthlessness outlived any other trait he had.
Lieutenant Hart continued walking down the hall. “Because you are guests here, we won’t hold you to the full responsibilities of a sailor, however, we are expecting you to be on your best behavior and to follow the schedule of the ship. You are to report at 6 am for roll call. Breakfast is at 8 am. Lunch at 12 noon and dinner at 5 pm. If you are in need of anything we do have a shopping area here on board. As a guest, you are not expected to pay but please…” She glanced behind her. “Do not abuse the privilege.”
“Part of your responsibilities will be keeping your living area clean and tidy. We do not have maid staff on this voyage. At 9 am, your sleeping area will be thoroughly checked for cleanliness and infractions will be reported. Any contraband will be confiscated.”
The hallway came to an end and she swiped her card. The wall panel suddenly slid open and they were led to what appeared to be something almost like a hospital ward with white walls lined with art and fluorescent lighting.. “This is where you’ll be sleeping. It’s cramped I know but you won’t be here for very long. I know you’re tired from the journey.”
She suddenly turned to Ru’Yi. “Sleeping areas are strictly separated by gender so I’ll show you to the women’s quarters.” She gave the others a fierce glare. “No men are allowed in the women’s area. If you are seen there you will be thrown into the brig. The area is clearly marked.”
Ru’Yi gave a shy little wince. “I guess I have a room to myself?”
“Not really. We weren’t …” Lieutenant Hart paused, rethinking finishing that sentence. Then her smile returned. “We can discuss that later.” She raised her eyes to the rest of the group. “Do you have any questions?”
Shimoda Masato raised his hand. “This is my first time working with the West Africa Branch. Can you tell me a little about your history?”
Liutenant Hart gave a curt nod. “Hybrids have always existed in Africa. While Mesopotamia is traditionally held as the ‘cradle of civilization’, it was the African plains and low forests that birthed humanity itself. We have the oldest relationship and conflict with dragons and their kind.”
She continued. “Our oral history cannot be fully explained by your traditions of the Dark King and the Light King. Our Creation Traditions do have dual gods, Mawu and Lisa. They are Brother and Sister as well as Husband and Wife.  Mawu is Female and Lisa is Male.”
Ru’Yi rubbed her chin.  “Mawu and Lisa are the same Dark King and the Light King?”
Summer Hart shook her head. “We cannot make that assumption. There are too many differences that cannot be explained by Cassell’s traditional knowledge.”
Aaron had an eager expression, pushing to the front of the group.  “Can you give us a brief run down?”
Summer looked a bit tired but couldn’t resist such an enthusiastic and curious audience. . “It was Mawu who created the earth while riding the Rainbow serpent, Aido-Hwedo, sliding across the ground and creating the hills and mountains. After the creation was finished, Mawu felt that the Earth would sink under its own weight, so she tasked Aido-Hwedo to support the earth in its strong coils under the sea.”
She crossed her arms over her chest. “In Cassell tradition, there are two Dragon Gods over all dragons, the Dark King Nidhogg and the Light King Izanami. However, in our tradition, the creator duality itself has a parent: Minona. Our traditions are passed down from her, the Mother of the Earth’s creators. She taught us to use the palm tree to tell the future, that is… Alchemy. Minona herself is a twin, sister to the god Legba, which is consistent with draconic relationships and lore. Legba is the one who gave us our Soul Skills.”
The students were whispering and murmuring among themselves after receiving so much new information.
“So, what you’re saying is there are more than two dragon gods? Then how come we don’t read about them in other histories?” Aaron asked, with a puzzled frown.
Summer Hart gave him a kind but pointed look. “Because our traditions are oral, my dear friend. We did not write them down. There are no temples to explore, no ruins, no clay tablet to find.”
Aaron sighed mournfully. “I’m sure Anjou was really curious about it too. It’s a shame he didn’t get to know any of this. I would have loved to have taken a class.”
Summer didn’t respond to that. She simply turned back to the group. “Any other questions?”
Brian lifted his hand. “What sort of kit is on this ship besides the planes?
“The ship is equipped with 8 Mark 12 5"/38 caliber guns, 45 Bofor antiaircraft guns, 32 Oerlikon cannons. All are modified to deal with dragon targets rather than fighter jets. We’re running heavy with alchemy rounds.”
Aaron blinked in shock. He didn’t expect so much artillery. “From the gear department?”
She shook her head. “We have our own engineers and alchemists to take care of our needs. But please do not be concerned. We pride ourselves on our alchemical prowess and we have a long history of dragon slaying.”
Aaron raised his hand again. “By any chance we could maybe learn more about your type of Alchemy and Soul skills?”
“I will have to ask the brass but… highly unlikely.” She checked her watch. “I will have to take our lone lady to her sleeping quarters. I suggest you get as much rest as you can.”

INHUMAN  WAILING  PIERCED  THROUGH  THE  CRISP  AIR — SHARP,  DISTORTED  CRIES  OF  A  CREATURE  FELLED  ONLY  HIS  EARS  COULD  DETECT.  Flocks of shadow fled the scene, yet upon his perch Gin loomed, remained, to linger in the scent of his slain kin rather than scurry in blind fear. HE DID NOT FEAR THIS WOMAN, though she had sheathed her pretty little  vampire-slaying knife  up the jaw of his own kind. They gurgled, gagged, and growled ... and crippled inward akin to a marionette's fall whilst strings were cut. Ashen, lifeless more so than before, somehow, it was an intriguing sight to befell: though Gin was heading into his next century of life, it was  rare  to witness a vampire’s soulless husk convulse and froth, condemned to eventually dissolve into the winds.
Whenever he met a Hunter, it was typically head-on, him cloaked as their personalized misfortune, their private undoing ... and they did not live long enough to impress him. BY CHANCE, SHE HAD NOT YET AIMED HER BLADE TO  HIS  THROAT TONIGHT — NO, SHE DIDN’T EVEN KNOW HE WAS UP IN THE RAFTERS.
          Yet.
The wind howled, and the abandoned warehouse walls trembled, storming clouds trailing the night sky in streaks of deepened silver bathed in moonlight. Gin’s shadowed form billowed, breathed upon by ominous air.
A lesser vampire, snarling as she righted her weapon to focus on the next kill, indeed  could  smell his hidden presence above. He had been aided by the wafting winds of pure luck. They froze, eyes blown, and staggered not from the Hunter ahead, no, but in fear of death from above. THE BARRACUDA WOULD CEASE ITS HUNT WHEN IN THE PRESENCE OF A SHARK. There was a bigger fish near, so to speak. But Gin did not allow the grunt a full retreat. Pale hand extended out, a whimsical turn of wrist, of splayed fingers coiling, plucked upon the strings of power at his command to freeze the poor thing solid;  helpless to his fate to be felled by the Hunter before him.
❝ KILL THIS ONE, TOO, ❞ his voice projected downwards, echoed against rattling metal frame, groaning steel ... his hand moved to tighten the invisible grip, which in turn brought the male vampire to his knees before her, unable to writhe beyond the slightest shiver against Gin’s bind.
❝ — go oooonnnnn, it’s all part of your  god-given  job, right ? Or ... ❞ a playful thought emerged, and Gin’s left hand abandoned its propped placement against his crouched knee, hovering out to begin the vague consideration of, too, ensnaring her within his unseen grasp. MAYBE HE COULD MAKE THEM FIGHT LIKE A CHILD WITH TOYS, smashing them together whilst implementing his own imaginative sound effects, but the idea vanished at the sheer absurdity. NO, HE’D PLAY ... SOMEWHAT FAIR.  ❝ ... ORRR, would you prefer bein’ the  helpless one  instead, like your lil act ? ❞
@oboete-iru‘s  MATSUMOTO RANGIKU  has come across a powerful vampire known as GIN during one of her hunting sprees.
