Au where Lance works a normal 9 to 5 (or as a nurse???) as a single dad and Keith is a mechanic at an auto shop??

It’s either a rivals-ish mutual pining slow burn 7-15 chapters 60k+ fic or a friends with benefits type of situation also mutual pining slow burn 7-15 chapters 60k+ fic.

Basically Lance moves into this new neighborhood to get away from the past (which is mainly his child’s mother and some other toxic people/environments (not his family or Hunk though)), and is immediately known as the hot, single dad who recently moved to the neighborhood, before he meets Pidge, a former child prodigy now genius software engineer. Pidge and Lance form a close bond with each other and Hunk even meets up with them a few times!!!!

Lance also hears about the young, hot mechanic down the street, and that’s kinda where their rivalry starts (along with other events).

In the mutual pining rivals au they keep getting put in situations where they have to compete, and then they become rivals, but they’re also hopelessly pining over each other and adore the other a lot. Cue Lance’s child accidentally calling Keith “Daddy” and everyone freaking out.

In the fwb au Lance grows a pair and pins Keith to a wall before making out with him almost immediately (like in the first few chapters), which also leads to mutual pining. They’re still “rivals”, though. Rivals who secretly make out and cuddle with each other, but that’s not important (it really is).

Also, just curious, is there a story behind your name "theladyragnell "?

I'll start with the easy question! If you are wondering who Lady Ragnell is, good news, I wrote up a version of the Arthurian tale I purloined the name from right here. If you're wondering why I chose to honor that tale, it's because I joined fandom through the show Merlin and because it was always my favorite Arthurian story!

As for the hard question ... "ever" is a big word, even if I weren't already a person who has trouble with "favorite"! So, to keep myself from vastly overthinking, I will instead tell you that these are ten fics that, for various reasons, I return to time and time again.

Lovesickness by idiopathicsmile, Les Mis, E/R, 11k. A delightful outside POV on some very oblivious pining, with truly incredible banter and humor.

(the end of fear is) where we begin by samyazaz, Les Mis, Combeferre/Eponine, 80k. I love Samy's writing, I love this ship, I love marriages of convenience, I love the hair-washing scene, it's just a banger.

An Avalanche of Detour Signs by gyzym, Sherlock, Molly Hooper/Lestrade, 56k (my virus software blocked something on this page, I think an old embedded image, so please be careful opening this one, unfortunately). This is a fic that really solidified my love of focusing in on minor characters.

what blooms like heather in the sun by Sovin, D&D (The Campaign of Five Dragons), Quil/Phi/Terry, 8k. It's so soft and kind and beautifully written. And if you're going to ask me my favorite fics ever, my favorite tiny fandom has to be represented, too!

Play It Again by metisket, Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, 60k. I just love the concept, and the rather unhinged Stiles!

So Wise We Grow by Deastar, Star Trek: AOS, Kirk/Spock, 80k. One of the best kidfics out there, and a really good comfort read.

For Your Information by reni_days, Merlin, Arthur/Merlin, 10k. Truly the funniest Merlin modern AU I've ever run into.

Will Wonders Never Cease by PorcupineGirl, Check Please, Bitty/Jack, 55k. Somehow makes a combination of Shop Around the Corner/You've Got Mail and a magic AU work!

Leaves in the Void by myrmidryad, Les Mis, E/R, 16k. A truly gorgeous space AU with an epistolary moment that left me breathless.

Say Something by [orphan_account], Teen Wolf, Derek/Stiles, 50k. One of my favorite canon-set fics for this ship, and the opening is gorgeous.

Another banger from Cig. TK & Carlos ride out a storm at Andrea’s house and are visited by a specter (maybe?). This is a beautiful look at faith and spirituality, and how people cope with the question of what happens after when you lose someone. Things I love: TK knowing nothing about cars but making them go vroom, Andrea and Tía Lucy with their seances, Carlos being a grumpy kitten, TK sashaying around in his fancy silk pajamas, the family dynamics of Andrea, TK & Carlos. They’re just so comfortable with each other in this fic, it feels so natural.

Wow!!! The tension in this one. TK and Judd take a trip to visit Judd’s dad and encounter some nefarious characters on the way home. The Judd & TK brotherly dynamic is top notch here. 1994 London Playlist (YouTube)

New playlist, folks! This week I started to build a slate of songs from the year of 1994 that were made by people who, at the time, hailed from London, the most musically eclectic city in the entire world. Don't exactly know why London is the way that it is, but its broad and open embrace of acid house, club culture, and pirate radio in the late 80s and early 90s definitely set it up for massive electronic expansion on a mainstream level that seems to still go on to this very day. The US has never really had that same history of love for electronic music, and that's probably why massive metropolises like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago always feel like they're lagging behind in comparison to what London is able to spit out on a constant basis.

And you're just simply not gonna find another playlist of great London-made tunes from 1994 that are quite like this one either, because I've got some real underground electronic heaters for you all to chew on here. At some point, I plan to expand this beyond just electronic music, but for now, you get some downtempo/trip hop, some IDM, some deep house, some breakbeat hardcore, and a handful of jungle tracks too; a great smorgasbord that almost no other city could produce so readily.

But first, there are two absolute classics on here: one is from a breakbeat hardcore group called 2 Bad Mice, who dropped a brand new remix of their '92 track, "Bombscare," in 1994 that ended up catching on like total wildfire. It's a very infectious, floor-filling, breakneck raver that cycles through all these abruptly twisting-and-turning combinations of anthemic vocal samples and drum breaks that ends up yielding absolute bedlam. And there's a lot of uploads of it on YouTube too, and the one with the most views has over 370K. A mid-90s dance classic that still has the capacity to make one lose their shit.

The other is from the one and only Ashley Beedle's disco and jazzy house group, Black Science Orchestra. In '94, they dropped a 12-inch EP on the Junior Boy's Own label called Altered States, and the track that kicks off its AA-side, "New Jersey Deep," makes for some jazz-funky, outer-space-coasting, deep house grooviness. It, too, has a lot of different uploads on YouTube, and its most popular one has over 378K plays.

But other than those all-time bangers, the rest of these songs are a lot more relatively obscure. The Rapino Brothers, who are best known for making the most famous remix of Italo-dance act Corona's global 1993 smash hit, "The Rhythm of the Night," kick us off with some relaxingly chill and stringy, bleep-blooping trip hop in "Go Ahead London," a tune that has a little over 10K plays across its couple uploads; then IDM trio The Black Dog grace us with their fantastically dreamy remix of German duo Alter Ego's "Tanks Ahead," which has a little over 15.2K plays across its various uploads; and then the great Dave Angel supplies us with a piece of aquatic techno called "Artech," which I once proved lines up perfectly as the opening music for the jetskiing Nintendo game Wave Race 64. That one has somewhere around 60K total plays on YouTube.

The rest of the playlist, then, is comprised of a small handful of deep and heady jungle beasts as well as a downtempo remix of a song by a group called A Friend From Rio, who are based out of London, but make music that sounds Brazilian. The Lumen Soundsmiths remix of their song, "Para Lennon and McCartney," is an excellently lush slice of bliss that sounds like it could've fit right in on a chillout compilation that was released a decade afterwards; impressive.

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? For this year it's absolutely my Tifa zine fic (in which Tifa travels to Cosmo Canyon to find answers about Aerith's death and whether she's still lingering in the world after the events of AC). I've talked about this topic before but I feel as if Tifa's grief is often brushed over in canon and in fanworks, and this fic allowed me to bring it to the forefront without having to write a 60k+ longfic. It was also just a joy to be chosen as a guest writer for such an incredible zine!!

6. Favorite title you used

... Probably my Tifa zine piece again, since it's based on a banger Lana del Rey song which is 100% one of my favourite songs of the year. For titles I came up with on my own (lmao). Bonus point also goes to Drown The Lovers because that's also based on a fucking banger.

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

This is gonna be a chonky answer, but it's 100% a scene from Constant's latest chapter:

He tilted his head towards her and saw Tifa blearily staring at the sky. “I’ve let a lot of people slip through my fingers,” she said quietly. “But not you. You never did. Even though I feared it. I feared it more than anything.” Vincent’s eyes met hers, lured by the sadness in her words. The truth came forward, unbidden, laid bare for them both to see. “I would have done anything to get you back.” Tifa’s chest went still. “Do—” She blinked rapidly. “Do you mean that?” The evidence was strewn around his room, shredded into jagged strips of white linen and black polyester. Sensing his answer, Tifa rubbed her thumb over his wrist, beneath his glove, as if searching for the starched cloth. “You’ll stay with me, won’t you?” she asked. “Until the end?” Vincent felt as if he were standing on the edge of a precipice, the chasm beneath holding the unknown. But for all of the nerves that tingled under his skin, the weight that constricted his chest, the nagging feeling that he was forgetting something important, something that formed the core of his being—he knew one thing: he would go to the ends of the Planet to protect Tifa Lockhart, because the sight of her in pain and distress was unacceptable to him. “I will.”

This is one of those scenes where I'm like "how the fuck did I write that? did I really do that?" hell yeah I did. 10/10 biggest accomplishment of 2023

14. a fic you didn’t expect to write

i mean, all of them, on some level. cause at the start of this year, i definitely would not have predicted writing a bunch of fic would be a major part of my year. but also, i never expected to write RPF, and i def didn't expect to write meta fiction fan fic, so wfu prob takes top slot for unexpected fic.

21. most memorable comment/review

there's one on Ink that says something like "you are elevating the medium." i'll def be carrying that one around for a long time. the whole wfu comment section knocks me out--there's one that calls wfu "operatic" and "wild, transgressive, beautiful trouble" that's a banger, and also @spenglernot calling it "Brechtian" will def stick with me.

28. longest fic you read this year

i did not read very many long fics, as i don't read many long fics in general, and i've been trying to churn thru some shorter ones on my tbr before i get into the 40k-60k range. it might be The Palm of Your Hand by @bonesofyourheart at 28k? an excellent fic if you haven't read it. there's prob something in the 30k range buried in my ao3 history but i don't feel like digging lol.

oh wait, just kidding, it was most likely @thetardigrape 's amazing young ed/jack, What Kind of Pirate Has a Friend? , which is just over 30k!

Summary: Katya first meets Steve in Glandus' baby class and they become fast friends. As the years go by, the two only become closer and eventually some new feelings develop. But what happens when the Emperor's Coven threatens to come between them?

Speaking of.... Friendship (And More) Across Battle Lines: my 60K woes Stevatya masterpiece 🌟 Summary: Through a series of chance meetings Steve, a loyal scout in the Emperor's Coven, gets to know Katya, an intriguing witch who has had her fair share of clashes with the Emperor's system. He finds himself drawn to her but there's a problem--she only knows him outside of uniform.

Finding Comfort Together, The Way Old Friends Do: Hunter (and Huntlow) centric post-King's Tide fic that I really like a lot 😋 Summary: It has been three weeks since the Hexsquad has arrived in the human realm and everyone has been feeling a bit down. I went back and forth on which fic this spot should go to, but settled on You're Actually Pretty Cool: A Katya & Mattholomule bonding story with some stevatya and gustho 😎 Summary: Steve and Katya have been dating several months now, and Steve thinks it's time for an important step in their relationship: letting his girlfriend spend some quality time with his younger brother. Mattholomule isn't looking forward to it…what exactly are they even supposed to talk about? (Gus. He talks about Gus.) I actually just reread this one because I'm planning to do two sequels!

And last but not least, for my Andi Mack peeps, Sometimes There's A Nice Person On The Inside Trying To Get Out: Kira should have been redeemed and this is a hill I am willing to die on 😤 Summary: "Why do you do that? Make me pick?" An alternate scene where Kira actually apologizes to TJ and maybe even helps him?

its sort of interesting that for all people talk about how small tumblr feels its not uncommon to see posts that are a few days old with 30-60k notes. posts that arent even what one would consider bangers. even assuming every note is people who both reblog and like it thats several thousand people logging on in the past three days to share a very average text post. and i get that youtube and twitter and instagram are like huge beasts in comparison but thats not small by any means.

idk if this says more about what i personally consider a large amount of people or if it speaks to how centralized the modern internet is that anything less than millions of daily users is kind of pathetic. beta ass website.

Stats! Stats! Stats!

There are three days left until sign ups open and we thought it might be fun to look back at last year’s exchange through the fun lens of MATH!!

That’s right! Maths. The wonderful @im-auntie-social did the Lord of Light’s work last year tracking the published works on a spreadsheet and has helped to highlight some of the fun figures from last year.

The Raw Stats

There were 102 sign ups last year, but we ended up with 112 fics in total!

The total word count of all completed fics was 1,310,259 words, which is more words than A Game Of Thrones, A Clash of Kings and a Storm of Swords combined, and if you include the few WIPs we still have, we also top A Feast For Crows!

The mean number of words per work was 12479 and the median was 8281, with a standard deviation of 13029 wpf (words per fic), which I am told by our resident statistician is hilarious:

okay so as of 8/25:

112 fics, 105 finished

(which means if you write the word counts in order, the 53rd value is 8,281, so half the fics are shorter than that, half are longer)

If you’re like us and bar charts confuse you, here’s a pie chart to show the distribution of word counts. Despite the massive total word count--and several writers’ increasing panic as their fics refused to end--most fics in the exchange were actually 10,000 words or less, and only 17% of the fics were longer than 20,000 words.

(The last bar, which is unlabelled, is for 60k and above, and belongs to the one, the only @writergirl2011. A round of applause to her!)

In addition to having a wide diversity of lengths for our fics, we also had a wonderful diversity of ratings!

NYR: June in Review.

Post-June horoscope: “what if you excel? What if it is one of the best experiences of your life? What if it changes you in a beautiful way?”

An exhausting month, on basically every level. But positive, overall? Mostly just changes on changes, endings and beginnings. I didn’t get a lot of what I had planned done, but what I did get done was pretty major, so I guess it balances out.

got a new real adult job. Of course, I haven’t been able to start it because of the plague and things are going to be disrupted for a long time, and I think partly because of that it’s still surreal and hasn’t really sunk in at all. It’s nearly everything I was looking for, too, which I think also adds to the this isn’t real of it all.

took the next step. It’s the kind of thing that doesn’t happen quickly, but incrementally, we’re getting there re: getting help.

finished a 60k+ story. I’ve been working on it sporadically since a bit earlier than this time last year and I finally finished it last month, which feels very good. People liked it, which is always nice too.

read more. Started reading some books. Going to make this a regular thing in the evenings before bed.

working on a story to submit. Still in-progress, but thankfully the deadline got knocked back so now I actually have time to get it ready and submit to the anthology for publication. Will be a big goal for this month coming.

nearly finished the short courses. I guess technically kind of not just this month, but the predominance of the work has been done and I’m counting that as a win. It’s exciting to see it come together, and I’m feeling pretty happy with myself about it. Sounds like the first couple might be launched later this month, which is pretty neat.

played Carrion. Not really an achievement or anything, I guess, although I did finish the game, but this list is also for things that are just fun and nice so it counts. Really loved this game. Will definitely play it many times. It’ll be a good one for killing time on the train trips to work, when those are allowed again.

my best friend is having a baby? I contributed nothing to this, obviously, but this is some major news and really, really exciting. I’m also smug as hell because I predicted the announcement like three days before she sent me her ultrasound basically apropos of nothing. Cannot wait to spoil this child. I’m going to be the most fun uncle.

In July, I will:

try to stress less. Self-explanatory. I would benefit from chilling out a bit, especially regarding work.

finish short courses. There’s only a couple of days worth of work left to go before they’re ready, so this is basically guaranteed.

finish, edit, and submit short story. It would be so cool and great to have something published in a physical book, so this is a major goal for this month.

read more. I like it a lot, although I’ve noticed it tends to keep me up late. Need to find some way to read a little, but often.

put thesis on pause. Going to take a break for the next few months while I adjust to full-time work, or at least that’s what we’re telling the university. If I write anything over the next few months, that’s a bonus, but not at all an expectation. (Now watch me write a heap of words the moment I had the paperwork in, because my brain’s favourite method of prioritising is picking the thing it’s not supposed to be doing as item number one).

make some time for poems. In deep psychological distress this month, which was honestly a lot of it in the first half, I kind of went through multiple ongoing mental break trance states or something, and happened to also make several actually pretty banger poems at the same time by more or less blacking out in front of my fridge magnets while blasting trauma music for hours. I think the kids call it coping. Anyway, post-all that, I remembered how much I really love poetry and I’m going to do more of it going forward, although hopefully with less of the dire mental instability that set it off this time.

get myself something/s nice. Going to keep my eyes open for nice things for me. It’s been a hard year. There’s a couple of books I’d like, and maybe some new clothes. Treat myself a little bit, since now I am going to be on a regular paycheck over twice what I’ve ever had before.
