azula in fanfiction
i really, deeply adore when fics explore azula after the war. when they give her the space to be different, to be messy and unhealed and traumatized. I really really love when writers give azula the space to be a multi-dimensional character who is not just a villain. when they decide: no, azula is not just a villain. she's not just mentally ill. she's not just her trauma. she is a multitude of things and I will now express that.
I think most notably of Once Around the Sun by eleventy7. The farewell to Azula in their fic (I promise, no serious spoilers) has stayed with me since I read it. I think about it, nearly, every day. The heart of that fic, honestly, is Azula to me. Without her, it wouldn't be the same story or have the same effect. I will always think about Akina. (read the fic, you'll get it).
More recently, I really adored how @wewere-angels wrote Azula's change and healing in everything i am (sorry, i won't shut up about this fic). The way that instead of Azula being isolated both in-story and out; she is surrounded by her family and friends. She is allowed connections and to heal; to regress and progress again. She isn't on a linear track of one thing: healed or insane. And I love it. (Thank you).

A/N: I wrote this with the reader being around 25 and Azula being around 20
“Y/N I got another mission for you” Your leader threw you a scroll,one with a black ribbon. A message from the castle,you unravel the scroll and it told you to come to the palace immediately. You quickly found out that Firelord Azula was the one who sent for you,she wanted you as her personal bodyguard.
That was about three years ago,you eventually got close to her. Enough to the point where she confessed her feelings to you,and you start dating. It was a secret at the start but eventually everyone knew. Recently she was getting a lot more handsy with you,constantly trying or having her hands on you. She wasn’t normally affectionate which made you finally ask her.
“I want to…”She trailed off.
“Want to..” She avoided looking at you
“I want to have sex with you!” She suddenly shouted,before realizing what she said her face was bright red.
“Let’s do it”
“What..”
“You’re not backing out on me now,are you?”

I accidentally deleted a ask that was asking azutara headcannons. I'm so sorry annon!
Azutara is actually my favourite ship in ATLA! I made a hefty arranged marriage headcannons for them, please check it out here:
Anyway, moving on to some new juicy azutara headcannons!
Water and fire are opposites. One burns, the other soothes. But they are similar in one regard: protection. Fire will burn the world to protect you. And water? Water will freeze, flood, parch, to protect you.
This explains Katara and Azula's relationship dynamics very well, in a hindsight. Two years of time in asylum had left her in a precarious mental state. The nation she once loved considered her a lunatic who hallucinated her mother. Even her own brother, Zuko seems to give up on her. But then comes Katara.
Whether it's the guilt of putting Azula in such a state in the first place, or just her compassionate nature, Katara sought to help Azula out. At first, Azula spat on the offer.
"What? You want to have yet another victory on me! Oh, the great watermaster heals the crazy firebender!"
Katara, who was usually quick to anger, remained patient with Azula's many insults.
"Make up whatever conspiracy theory you want, Azula. At the end of the day, I'm here to help you, whether you like it or not."
It was like a unstoppable force meeting a unstoppable object. Eventually, Azula relented. And so started their sessions together. Azula expectedly freaked out when Katara's water entered her mind for the first time.
However, true to her word, Katara respected her privacy. Katara only soothed and cleared out the cogs and fog in her mind. She never poked where Azula didn't allow her. After four such sessions, Azula let her guard down.
"Have you tried the fried gizzard tongue yet?"
"The what?!"
"It's a delicacy here. My favourite."
Katara in her next visit brought fried gizzard tongue. They had their first meal together. Soon, it would become a daily routine.
Hell broke loose when Katara got to know how Azula was treated in the asylum. Katara had caught sight of Azula's nails, or rather the lack of. She put two and two together and stormed off, ready to confront the Fire Lord Zuko.
Azula doesn't know what Katara did, but soon her residence changed. She was moved to Katara's place, which didn't have any bars in windows or thin mattress bed. Katara assured Azula that she will make sure Azula never goes back there again.
Zuko one day showed up, after months of avoiding Azula. Both ended up crying, asking forgiveness from each other. War had made enemies of a brother and sister. Finally, they can heal.
Azula still suffers from nightmares. But now, she has Katara by her side, rushing to her side whenever she wakes up screaming. Sweet, protective Katara rubs her forehead with her soothing hand, promising Azula that her water will only protect Azula from now on.
Azula knows at this point she loves Katara. She thinks Katara loves her too. But like water and fire, they keep dancing around each other. It also doesn't help that Katara is still with Aang, even if Katara these days doesn't care much for him.

I feel one of the big issues with Azula's writing in the series is...well, it feels like they left a lot up to interpretation. Like we mostly see her from Zuko and Iroh's POV and neither of them are charitable in the slightest. Same with the heroes, with their views of her being warped by Zuko and Iroh and their hostile interactions with her during the war. So ultimately, a lot is left up in the air.
The problem with being that vague though is that...well, it lets the mind fill in the blanks. And when what you have to begin with is a scarily competent villain with a threatening aura that killed the main hero...what fills in the blanks isn't going to be particularly pleasant. At all.
This might be part of the reason why Azula gets demonized so much is that Bryke left a lot up for interpretation with her, and the fans just went wild with what was left unsaid. Often to the detriment of what IS said about Azula, mainly the view times she does get to share her viewpoint and almost all the time those tantalizing tidbits often contradict what is assumed. After all, if she was so sociopathic, why did Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal shake her up so bad? Why did she hallucinate Ursa if she truly hated her? How come she got really shaken up when Ozai left her behind? Stuff like that.
Especially when you consider how the writing can't seem to pin down just how sympathetic she's supposed to be. Sometimes she's viewed as being just another monster, but other times she's viewed as being in the same boat as the Gaang but on the opposite side of the war. Compare to some of her earlier appearances in Book 2 where she's portrayed as Zhao but worse to some of the later appearances when she's given more nuance and sympathy. It's a constant seesaw where you can't figure out where the writers are going.
And reportedly, not even the writing staff knew how to portray Azula. Reportedly there was a lot (presumably including Bryke) that wanted her to be a soulless villain, but there was also another faction that wanted her to be more tragic and sympathetic. Which is what we get in the series with how the narrative portrays Azula varies wildly from writer to writer. There's no real consensus to it and can leave the viewer a bit left in the dark. While the subtle hints that Azula has a soul are there, they aren't really elaborated on and the viewer naturally goes for the easiest interpretation given: that she's just a bad egg that needs to be taken down just like Ozai.
I think that's why she's so popular in fanfics where fans do get the opportunity to explore her character and elaborate on those hints. And normally we usually get a more interesting and sympathetic character out of that. Hell, that's how I got hooked onto her. As for the series proper though...I feel they had someone special on their hands, but ultimately squandered it for just another villain. I'd almost compare her to the story of the Ant-agonizer from Fallout 3: a really neat idea for a character that sadly got reduced to being a stock villain.

"Oh come on. It's just a small scratch. Nothing bad. So stop acting like you're about to cry."
Azula rolled her eyes at you as you just hit your pinky toe when you walked past the wardrobe in her chambers. You were sitting on the ground holding on to the spot that hurt so much and trying your very best to not let tears get through.
"It hurts as if an earth bender smashed a rock on my toe! I bet it's broken..."
Again Azula rolled her eyes thinking you were exaggerating. But when she noticed the first tear slipping down your cheek she sighed and stepped forward, kneeling down in front you.
"Fine show me."
Sniffing you took of your socks and let her have a look at your pinky and it took her by surprise to see the ugly purple mark right where you hit it. She sighed.
"Well, I think we should get you to the healers just in case it's not broken. I'll take you but please, stop crying, yes? I don't want people to think I'm friends with a crybaby."
You looked at her, giving her a nod while biting your lip. It still hurt like hell but when Azula picked you up like it was nothing you were distracted anyway.
Your cheeks turned into a shade of pink as you looked at her face. She didn't look at you directly focusing on the path ahead. Carefully you held onto her neck leaning your head against her shoulder slightly.
Without thinking you placed a gentle kiss on her cheek.
"Thank you, Zula."

we’ve found out recently that aaron ehasz head writer of atla said that azula loved zuko more than anyone, save her father 😭
in “the beach” azula notices zuko’s not doing ok and tries to make him feel better by making him join the others
in “the headband” azula finds out zuko is visiting iroh and does NOTHING about it. she just tells him to be careful.

So I have an Azula centric oneshot idea which is very weird and absurd, even awful but i want to share with you guys for learning what you think about it. İt's a plot i choose for the Azula Drabbles and Oneshots collection but if you're interested you can s use it.(which everybody gonna hate this plot I'm sure since it's really awkward)
So I'm thinking of a game specialized for firebenders but azula would change that rule to no bending. İ haven't decided all the rules since i hate all the ideas came up to my mind but I'm still working on it and trying to not doing it very childish or mature. Like a game for 13+ audience. İt's a team game and all the teams consist of two players. Teams would be Azula-Zuko, Katara-Aang and Sokka-Toph
Gaang tried to fight against Azula but she won because she was waiting for them and used some traps to catch them. İt's a bending special traps, for example katara can't use water because Azula blocked her bending ability with an wolfbat poison she added Katara's bending water while fighting with her. Which makes Katara's aura unbalanced and she can't can't use her bending until using an antidote, she don't have to use antidote but that way she can't bend water 72-80 hours. But of course they don't know this because it's a fact Azula learned from a royal poison expert(ozai requested it and he even let the expert use non-lethal poisons on her for immunity) and it's not a common fact. Like it's actually normal to not know it. And Azula refuse to give them antidote if one of them leaves.
Azula threatened the gaang while she fight with them, she said Tohoku-one of the Earth Kingdom citys i made up- is under an invasion and it started now. She acts like they're the reason of this occupation and wouldn't let them go until she take what she wants.
The deal is if Azula wins, she gains a trip to the sprit world which she has some future plans for it, but if gaang wins, she will say stop to Tohoku occupation. So with this antidote thing and stopping occupation things make deal seem more acceptable.
Either way Azula wins or lose, she will gain something that can be useful for her future plans. Even if she not wins something because she lost the deal, at least she had chance to using and improving her poison making skill which she's not using since a little kid.
İt's not actually in a season but i guess i can use early episodes of season 3, Mai and Ty Lee won't be around since Azula wanted it to be a sister-brother bonding activity and she needs them for taking information about one of her future plans. So Mai and Ty Lee is in city and they try to reach secret archive.(it includes all fire lord's yearly summary's and Azula thinks she can use it to finishing this war) She don't want to spend time with searching some secret archive that doesn't know is it real or not and she also wants to spend time with his brother. She really cares about him but she can't admit it.
Zuko will be a part of Azula's team, not gaang. Azula actually cares about him because he defended her against Ozai after coming back and Azula start to think maybe Zu-Zu is not so bad as she thought. And she won't admit but she miss teasing with Zuko like the time when they're kids. And of course she also thinks he would be an important ally because enemy Zuko really annoys him. Also she has a little regret for not helping him while banishing thing. She is not a heartless monster and she knows it's her mom's fault, not his. And burning his face in all their people is even crossed Azula's line.
And of course Zuko don't know her plans, he just think she's trying to catch the Avatar but surely he suspect Azula's planning something. Just Azula is so good at covering her secrets.
İt's supposed to be an easy with little plot oneshot but it turned into some short story.
İ hope i can explain it what I'm thinking about and thanks for all of your ideas! İ normally don't ask too many questions about plot because I'm always think it's more easy and fun to write what you think at moment. But since I'm trying to be a better writer, i started planning and editing stuff.
Please if you have any questions about this oneshot's AU ask it and I'll answer all of it. I'm having a really important exam on 17-18 June-i'm preparing this exam since last year- and i may not be able to write a lot, it's been 4.100 words but it's waits for writing. İf any of you guys have any ideas to improve this plot or fixing plot holes, please let me know.

This is the part where i stopped writing.
"I really just want to talk. And I'm here with only good intentions. The best option you have is listening to me."
Azula slightly waves her hand in the air, then she speaks one last time.
"Or I'll make sure they know this situation happens because of the Avatar. İt's all your choice."
The waterbender pauses for a while to consider her options, knowing if she doesn't make a quick decision, the entire team will be captured because of her. Without the bending and weakened by the poison, she'll only becomes a burden to her team. She sighs deeply before speaking in an exasperated tone, it must make her feel helpless to think about the possibility of not being able to waterbend again.

An azutara arranged marriage au because no one else is doing it
Where Azula and Katara bickered a lot, decided the other is not so bad, found a long-lost mother, found dragons, rebuild two nations and finally fell in love
The building blocks - Azula
Azula is still very much a self-centered, cunning and magnificent bastard. But this time her pragmatism and survival instinct very much overrides her need for fatherly approval.
Azula is someone who demands excellence. She is herself perfection incarnate. She is hailed as a prodigy for a reason, in both her tactical acumen and her bending skills.
In comparison, Ozai is all brute force and no finesse. And Azula notices this. She sees how she is really better than her father in every way possible at the mere age of fourteen. And if that wasn't enough, her father being a power hungry self-destructive maniac makes Azula sure her father will burn down the whole country. The Avatar appearing again doesn't help either.
So when she sees her daddy dearest burn off half the face of Zuko, she knows she is living on borrowed time. If she ever disappoints her crazy father, she'll be next on the burning block.
And so she plans. She smuggles Zuko out safely. Not because she is particularly fond of her brother, no. She does it because she needs to get him to the Avatar. There is only one way to save the country she loves so much, and she needs that bald air-kid for it.
She sends the Avatar team occasional pointers with the help of her pet hawk. The hawk's name is Vishu btw. She is a beautiful thing. Katara especially loves her and regularly gives her treats. This will be important down the line. It’s too bad that besides Zuko, no one really knows just how nauseatingly nice Azula is being.
Azula meanwhile also tries her best at boot licking her father. She does need to keep her face safe until the Avatar arrives. Daresay, Azula makes one fantastic villain. She hopes Zuko will clear her name later, so she can become the Fire Lord and save her nation from imploding on itself.
All in all, it ends well for Azula. Ozai is behind bars and without firebending. Zuko lets her take the throne, despite the many protests from Avatar and that water-peasant. Uncle Iroh surprisingly stays quiet. She guessed that even he knows his dear nephew is not exactly Fire Lord material.
Now she just needs to make sure that bald kid does not take away her bending. Which means she needs to be on her best behavior. Sigh.
The building blocks - Katara
If someone told Katara that the crazy fire-breathing banshee would one day be a competent Fire Lord, she would have laughed in their face so hard the sky would start raining. But the new Fire Lord whom everybody doubted did become the reason her tribe finally saw peace after a century of war.
It was not peaceful all the time, though. There was still plenty of bad blood between the two nations. Not a month goes by when some stray rogue Firebender does not try to burn their igloos. It was tempting to believe that Azula was behind it all, but the Fire Lord sending compensation and apology for every single attack told her otherwise.
Meanwhile, things in her personal life were not all’s well either. Aang and her finally broke up after her seventeenth birthday. Something she did see coming. Aang wanted marriage and babymaking to rebuild the air nomads. And Katara was just not ready for it.
The upheaval in her life all came to a head when an Emperor Class Fire Nation frigate rammed into the South Pole. Her igloo almost got destroyed and in retaliation she promptly sunk the ship. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt in her tribe. But she knew then that her life would never be the same.
It thankfully didn't come to a war as she expected. Azula personally came down to the South Pole to make amends. Katara noticed that she finally got rid of those God awful clawlike nails. She also had to grudgingly admit that an adult Azula is rather easy on the eyes.
Katara wished she had clawlike nails to claw off Azula’s face when she proposed a marriage with her to seal the peace agreement. She understands that this is the best way to shut the complaining xenophobics, but surely there is another way?!
“Is this even necessary? Can’t you just do your thing and burn those Ozai loyalists?”
“I am trying to not be my father. Did you not notice that in the last four years?”
It was this that finally made Katara say yes. They were married in three days and immediately set sail for the Fire Nation soon after. What joy.
