Azula stand in her room staring at the shattered mirror Her mother’s words still echoing in her ear when y/n inters the room
Y/n; Azula are you all right?
Azula; you fear me, to don’t you
Y/n; what?
Azula; You’re the only one left everyone else has abandoned me and that’s because they’ve lost their fear of me but you’re still here so you must fear me that proves it
Y/n stares at her confused, not knowing how to answer
Azula; chuckles to herself this proves her wrong
Y/n: proves who wrong?
Azula; nothing
Y/n approaches Azula
Y/n; to answer your question no I don’t
Azula; what?
Y/n; I do not fear you I never have
Azula whips around her face, twisted and anger
Azula perhaps you should fire begins to rise from the palms of our hands how dare you lie to my face
Y/n steps closer and grabs Azula’s wrists
Y/n looks Azula dead in her eyes
Y/n I don’t fear you I love you Azula.
Azula stairs back at y/n Her flames die down
the tears start to roll down her face
Y/n wraps their arms around her, and start to rub her back Tenderly scratching it
Y/n; I always will y/n kisses her forehead

Azula's Gambit
pairing : Azula x Gender-Neutral Reader word count : 5k
warnings: angsty and feels. Summary : Princess Azula known for her cunning and control, finds herself inexplicably drawn to you, a figure who challenges her at every turn. You and Azula were bound by a complex game of emotion, mind games, power plays and manipulation. One day, you challenge Azula to break her facade; to see her vulnerable, with one question in mind: Are you just a game to her? Or are you something more? A/N : I really hope you enjoy this angsty, brainy, little fic of Azula. There will be part two of the ending (in which I still wrecked my head to write about 🥲)
---
In the center of the courtyard, Azula stood, a figure of fierce concentration. She took a deep breath before opening her eyes. She started off by twirling a flame on her fingertip, it zig-zag through her fingers effortlessly. With a flick of her wrist, that flame conjured a blazing inferno. The blue flame leaped, spiraled, and danced around her; each second is precise, each movement is organic, each turn with it’s whirl are calculated.
So far, so good. A smug smile playing on her lips. Now, It’s time to dance with the lightning.
As she extended her arm, her fingers splayed. She shifted her weight effortlessly, her feet gliding over the ground as if she were part of the wind itself. With a swift, circular motion of her hands, the lightning followed, spiraling around her in a mesmerizing display of control and power. She transitioned into a series of quick, explosive movements, a sharp turn of her body directed the lightning outward in an stunning arc. She finally point to a giant rock to blast all the lightning with, cracking it into two.
The courtyard erupted into spontaneous applause. Each clap full of admiration, awe and maybe a bit of fear: just how Azula liked it. As she stood amidst the blue flames, her chest swelling with pride, her head held a touch higher.
She scanned the crowd, searching for one face in particular, yours, hoping to catch a glimpse of your stupid amazed face. Her ‘fiery’ performance, as you repeatedly called it, was a spectacle to proof your dare. You had dare her to split the rock with only a finger, and she did just that.
As her eyes darted through the sea of mostly aged and ragged men faces, her heart sank slightly. You were nowhere to be seen. Instead, her eyes met her father’s. Their eyes locked, he stood, a stoic figure– his face betraying no emotion. He gave a subtle nod, it was terse, almost reluctant approval. But she knew almost it’s not good enough.
Finally, she had to maintained her composure, her face now a mask of indifference mirroring her father’s. With a graceful bow to the audience, she let the flames die down, taking her leave from there.
The performance had ended, and the courtyard was still buzzing with the leftovers of Azula’s fiery display. Azula had trained for this. Hours and hours that turned to days and days then it became to several weeks to months. But she felt nothing paid that hard work, those time were wasted. This performance was not a big deal, it was not a green light to be a Firelord either. Yet, she can’t help but failing.
Ty Lee rushed up to her, “Azula! There you are,”
Ty Lee already brimming her words of amazement with uncontainable energy, “The way you move the lightning and those dancing flames?! It was so amazing!” she exclaimed, her voice echoed the corridors.
Azula nodded in acknowledgment, “Naturally,” casually shrugging.
“You did well,” Mai soon approached with a small smile, “As always, you know how to leave an impression.”
“Leave an impression?” Ty Lee said, “She set the standard sky-high! Oh, Y/N should’ve seen this. Y/N would’ve been totally wowed!”
Azula almost jolt by the mention of your name. As if she had electrocute herself with her own lightning. Her eyes immediately glare at Ty Lee, usually fierce and controlled, but now it flickered with absolute disappointment. “Y/N or not, the performance would have been the same. I don’t perform for anyone’s approval.”
Azula felt weird. It was something bittersweet. It’s simple in words actually, she just long for your eyes to witness her element; her elegance and her perfection–all blended it in her ‘fiery’ performance, to share the countless training sessions into triumph–but now felt incomplete. Was that too much to ask?
“Maybe not,” Mai observed wryly, “but sometimes certain eyes matter more than other, don’t they?”
Azula’s gaze hardened to Mai, a silent glare that spoke volumes. But Mai was unfazed by the glare, somehow she was used to it.
“Y/N is busy with the date,” Ty Lee tried to defend, completely oblivious to the unspoken glares, “but anyway, we are going to celebrate! What about a dinner in your honor? Come on, it’ll be fun!”
Azula momentarily lost in the fact that you are busy with something that you had to bail on her performance–wait, what is the date? She decided to ask that later on and quickly set that aside as she straightened her posture, the commanding edge returning to her voice, “A celebration in order, indeed. Lead the way.”
As they started to follow to wherever Ty Lee’s are leading them towards, Azula still let her eyes momentarily drifted back to the empty space where she had hoped to see you. It was a fleeting glance, one filled with a mix of hope and resignation, before she finally turned away.
———
You finally made it to the place, the place your date will be waiting. You stepped into the restaurant, and was immediately taken aback in an atmosphere of elegance. It was bustling with energy, each table almost occupied by well-dressed patrons engaged in lively conversation, the clinking of fine china and glassware creating a harmonious backdrop. Soft, golden lightning bathed the room, casting a warm glow over the sophisticatedly decorated interior, accentuating it’s luxury.
Though you were no stranger to luxury, having spent considerable time in Azula’s opulent surroundings, the ambiance here was a refreshing change—to say the least. This place was a modern version of luxury you’re used to—sleek, polished, and contemporary. It was less about showcasing heritage or history, it is simply about aestheticity.
Comparing this to the Fire Nation’s palace, specifically Azula’s bedroom or her study room—where every corner told a story, every tapestry and artifact held a piece of history. You had always been fascinated by that world, a world where elegance was defined by it’s connection to the past, it’s cultural significance to the Fire Nation. But, if you had to choose: you knew your heart leaned more on the timeless, old and dusty artifacts in no time since you are such a history nerd.
Your mind took you back to the palace. Your mind showed you her face—that damned face. Her stupid beautiful face with her arrogance, her high ego that seemed impenetrable, and her refusal to be vulnerable with you. Then you remembered that today was her ‘fiery’ performance, where she practically show off her skill and power that was undeniably impressive, yet tinged with haughtiness.
You had deliberately missed it or rather bailed on it. It was a decision that is not easy but felt necessary. You believed Azula needed a lesson, a taste of what it felt like to have someone important to you not acknowledge your hard work, no matter how small or grand it is.
You remembered the countless moments when Azula had to let her ego overshadow their friendship. Azula always keeping a part of herself hidden, always maintaining that edge of superiority, always strive to perfection. You don’t need that perfect princess of Fire Nation; you had always been attracted by what makes Azula human. You love her intense passion, which made her arrogant but also made her deeply committed and earnest. You love her insecurities that she rarely voice out loud—but once she do, you savor her little doubts and asked your thoughts on it. You love her hidden softness in her usual confident and prideful exterior. You simply just love her, by her flaws.
Now, you are searching for a sign if you meant more to Azula than just another person in the friend group. You are reaching for cracks to Azula’s walls, to find a tender glimpse that you, more than anyone else, held a special place in her heart.
This date is more than just a dinner. It is a statement, a silent rebellion against Azula unyielding façade. Tonight, you wanted to feel that sting of absence, the pang of being ignored. You wanted Azula to realize what she was potentially losing. It was a gamble—provoking someone as strong-willed as Azula—but you felt it was necessary.
You had only one question: Will this finally drop Azula’s barriers?
“Hi, I’m Y/N,” You said to the receptionist, “I believe I’m expected by Chan?”
“Oh yes, Y/N! He’s been looking forward to your arrival. Just follow me, I’ll take you to him.” The receptionist glanced up at you, there was a brief flicker of recognition in her eyes—maybe too quick to be merely courteous acknowledgment from a staff member to a guest. In a place where the staff typically meets countless strangers daily, such a look is a bit odd, as if the receptionist had been expecting you, or perhaps knew of you in some way beyond the scope of a simple dinner reservation.
The receptionist weaved her way between elegantly set tables and past animated diners as you followed her through the bustling restaurant. The receptionist moved with a practiced ease, guiding you through with a casual grace.
“Our chef has some delightful specials tonight," she mentioned, gesturing subtly towards the kitchen, where the harmonious chaos of culinary creation was just visible. “Is there a particular type of cuisine you're fond of, or are you looking to be surprised?”
“I’m open to recommendations. Surprise is part of the experience, isn’t it?” you said. You wondered how, in a busy restaurant like this one, the staff could still afford to be so casual and engage in small talk. Perhaps she was just exceptionally good at her job.
The receptionist nodded, her smile still in place. But you caught a quick, almost imperceptible tap on her pocket. It was a weird gesture, a brief one though—but it made you questioned more. Was there more to this receptionist than met the eye?
No, no, you said to yourself. I’m here on a date. You shook off the thought as a byproduct of your cautious instinct.
Reaching a well-appointed table, the receptionist present you to Chan, who is apparently the restaurant owner, "Y/N, welcome!" Chan exclaimed, rising from his chair with a warm smile. He leaned in to peck your cheeks in a friendly greeting, then smoothly slid aside, gesturing gracefully to the chair, inviting you to take a seat.
You sat as the receptionist departed, you found your gaze subconsciously trailing the woman’s retreating figure. There was something about her you could not figure out, something like a hidden agenda beneath her polished exterior that catch your curiosity.
“I’m glad you could make it!” Chan interrupted your thoughts. You scolded yourself for possibly reading too much into a simple exchange, a habit you often fell back on— especially now with your thoughts deeply entangled in how Azula might respond to this evening.
“Well, thank you for inviting me, Chan. I heard so many great things about your restaurant.”
“How could I not invite someone as knowledgeable as you in culinary arts? I’ve been looking forward to our conversation all day.” His gaze lingered on you just a moment longer than necessary.
“And might I add, you look absolutely stunning tonight. Guess it’s not just the food that’s going to be exceptional.” His smile broadening, tone alight. He leaned slightly towards you, trying to close the physical and metaphorical gap between you two. His gestures were smooth and a well-rehearsed play.
The dinner progressed with a steady flow of conversation and laughter. Chan, ever the entertaining host, amused you with tales of the restaurant’s origins and his personal journey in the culinary world. Each story was accompanied by a detail explanation, his knowledge in arts and history were evident— that made you intrigued, his enthusiasm were entirely contagious too.
“I'm definitely interested in those stories,” you confessed, “Did you know I stumbled upon a recipe from Princess Azula’s ancestral line? It’s amazing to see how food connects with history!"
"No kidding? That’s the kind of stuff that makes my job cool, right? We should totally whip that up sometime. Might impress the Princess or even the Firelord, too. You know, they got quite the taste for the authentic."
You nodded eagerly, you stand up by what he said, your smile brightened, “It's all about the details, isn’t it? She values that in everything, food included.” Your gaze briefly flickered to the door, half-expecting, half-hoping for her to burst in—but the door remained closed.
“Absolutely,” he said, as you two were finishing dessert, “Speaking of details, how about after dinner, we take a closer look at some of the exclusive wines I’ve got? A private tasting, just for us. It said dated a while back to Avatar Roku’s age! Could be a nice way to wind down the evening, you know?”
His invitation was clear, his gaze intent on you, slightly dimming. The suggestion was tempting, it was wrapped in the complex of his stories that you really enjoyed and it was a possibility to continue your fun conversation. But it was also unmistakably laced with an intention that went beyond a simple wine tasting.
Chan leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a suggestive whisper, his hand finding reasons to brush against yours under the impression of emphasizing a point. He was intruding  your personal space, his body language more assertive than courteous.
You shifted uncomfortably in your seat, your mind’s racing. You were aware of Chan’s motives. And now he was trying his best to lure you into accepting his request. He sensed your hesitation; thus escalate his flirtations even more.
You look around for some form of silent support. You realized you might get none. The staff, loyal to Chan, were unlikely to intervene. The patrons were too absorbed in their own worlds, oblivious in your discomfort. Then, you locked eyes with the woman you noticed earlier— the receptionist.
Her gaze was intense, not just observing the scene between you and Chan, but seemingly focused on you yourself. In that brief eye contact, you felt a strange sense of safety—a little bit. The receptionist, whatever her role or reason for being there, was a witness, an outsider to the unfolding scenario.
“You know,” Chan said, “I once threw a party back in the day, at my parent’s place.”
He grew bolder; you could feel it. He was getting impatient with your hesitance, so he decided to shift tactics.
“There was this girl, like you,” he began, a mischievous glint in his eye. “Sophisticated, smart, but impulsive. We hit it off, and well, let’s just say, we shared a memorable kiss that night.”
He paused for effect, his smile grew. “But here’s the twist— suddenly, we found the house in ruins. Turn out, she had a bit of a wild side. Wrecked the place. My parents were furious and I was too. But she still live up here,” he pointed to his forehead. “I couldn’t help admiring her spirit, now.”
The story, seemingly harmless, but you knew there was something intended; what is he trying to say? You knew he was subtly warning you of your next move. It was a veiled attempt to gauge your response.  The clock ticked on, each minute stretching longer than the last. You found yourself at a crossroads. Part of you wanted to put an end to the evening, to assert your boundaries firmly. Yet another part, the strategist within you, contemplated the potential outcome.
Screw it.  You went this far.  Screw you, Azula.
“I’d be delighted to see your winery,” you said, voice steady. You made your decision.  Chan’s face lit up, he giggled boyishly.
You instantly pictured Azula’s reaction— would it be jealousy, anger, or indifference? The uncertainty was agonizing yet exhilarating. You doubt the effectiveness of this decision; Azula was a fortress of composure and arrogance. Could this be the key to crush her?
Your thoughts swirled as you left the restaurant, hand in hand with Chan. You decided the night was young, and the possibilities were endless. There was no turning back now.
From the corner of your eye, you saw a woman, disheveled and frantic, burst through the restaurant doors, clutching a young boy in her arms. The boy was pale, his condition visibly dire. The restaurant, a moment ago, a peaceful haven of lively diners, plunged into chaos.
“Help!” The woman cried loudly. “My son! He is sick because of your food!”
Chan, caught off guard, hurried back inside, with you following closely behind. Your heart pounded. The mother’s anguish was blatant, her voice breaking through the murmurs of the startled diners.
“Ma’am, please, calm down. Let’s not jump to conclusions. Tell me what happened.” Chan said, trying to maintain control.
“We eat your leftovers, and now he’s like this! You did this to him!” she cried out, almost hysterically. She clutched the poor boy close, her eyes were wild with panic and desperation.
“Everyone, please listen!” the mother continued, “This isn’t just about me and my son. It’s about you too, how can you eat here, not knowing if your food is safe? My son is dying because of this place!” Her voice cut through the room, her desperation resonating with every patron.
Chan seemed irritated, he blocked her from reaching the diners, “Ma’am, I understand you’re upset, but making unfounded accusations won’t help. Let’s discuss this privately and find a solution, yes?”
The mother, ignoring Chan’s presence altogether, turned to other diners. “Would you all just sit there if it was your child? He was fine before eating the leftovers, but look at him now!”
“I’ll assure you, our food is prepared to the highest standards. We’ll call for medical help right away, but please, let’s not cause a scene.” Chan tried again, though he was visibly flustered.
“A scene?” The mother shrieked, “My child is dying! How can you talk about scenes? You need to take responsibility!”
Chan struggling to maintain his professional demeanor, signaled his staff to intervene, hoping to move the mother and her son away from the public eye.
You stood there, a bystander. You froze from the unfolding scene before you. Your plan to provoke Azula suddenly seeming insignificant in the face of such raw human vulnerability. It was heart-wrenching, a stark contrast to the calculated world you’re used to, a world you shared with Azula.
And you loved this. You would love to see it in Azula.
You heard Chan sighed. His earlier confidence had evaporated. This was not how he had envisioned the evening—what was supposed to be a simple date with a girl had spiraled into his career nightmare. He looked back to you, offering a small smile that he tried doing genuinely. He looked tired. You couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for him.
As the tension of the restaurant simmered, the sudden arrival of men, dressed in crisp, light blue uniforms with the emblem of public health department prominently displayed. The health inspectors. What are they doing in here?
Accompanying the inspectors were a couple of royal palace guards, adding a layer of urgency to the situation. These officials grabbed the attention of all eyes in the place.
What the Agni is this about?
“Good evening, Mr. Chan,” the health inspector said, “We’ve received an urgent complaint regarding a health hazard in this establishment. We need to conduct an immediate inspection.”
Chan with his face a mix of confusion and panic, quickly stepped forward to greet them. “This must be some misunderstanding. Our kitchen adheres to the highest of standards. Can we discuss this privately, perhaps?”
“I’m afraid this is a matter of public safety. We must proceed with the inspection now. In full view of your patrons.” He surveyed the restaurant with keen eyes.
“Please, let’s handle this discretely,” Chan practically begged and almost fell to his knees, “I promise, whatever the issue, we’ll cooperate fully. There’s no need for a public spectacle.”
“Our priority is the health and safety of the public, Mr. Chan,” said he firmly, “We need to inspect your kitchen and restrict all activities within. We are ensuring that there are no violations.”
The health inspectors, without warning, walked towards the kitchen, with a pleading Chan following closely behind them. As you stood by the door, left, deserted, you had no idea what to do now. The restaurant buzzed with whispers and speculation from the patrons. The air was thick with tension, drama after drama are unfolding way too fast.
The timing of the inspection was too precise, too perfectly aligned with the chaos the mother had caused.
You grew suspicious to the inspectors. You observed them; they moved with an air of the outmost confidence and purpose that seemed beyond the usual protocol. Their approach was methodical, almost as if they were following a script.
Moreover, the presence of the guards, royal guards. What are their business with this?
These details, all in different kind that if were put together—it formed a picture. A scheme. An orchestration. You had aligned it all to form it’s real essence—which point to her involvement.
You knew Azula’s penchant for dramatic flair; you knew this was controlled and design thoroughly, unyielding and impactful; you knew the guards were a show of force, a tactic that Azula often employed to assert dominance and control. And the mother? Was that her plan too?
This wasn’t just a simple health inspection; it was a revenge in a larger game she recently launched, in perfect motion. From this, you knew that this night was far from over, and that the aftermath of Azula’s actions would ripple far beyond the walls of the restaurant.
“Ms. Y/N,” a guard spoke, “Princess Azula request your presence at the palace immediately.”
You expected it, but you were also caught off guard. You were about to dismiss the guard when the receptionist from earlier appeared beside him. She gave you a subtle nod, her expression betraying nothing, yet is trying to tell something. In that instant, you realized the truth—the receptionist was more than she seemed, likely a spy placed by Azula, to monitor your movements.
You acknowledged Azula’s cunning and what a dick move she pulled. You can’t help but respect this carefully designed scheme but frustrated to the supervision that limits your own autonomy. The latter emotion got the best of you than the former. “Tell Princess Azula I’m not at her beck and call. I won’t be going to the palace.”
The guard’s expression remained impassive, but it was the receptionist who stepped forward, breaking her professional facade. In a swift, startling motion, she slapped you across the face, the sound echoed sharply.
“You don’t understand,” she said urgently, “You need to come with us now. It’s not a request.”
The slap left a burning sensation on your cheek. It was unexpected and forceful. The onlookers in the restaurant paused, the scene unfolding before them adding to the night’s surreal quality.
Realizing that resistance might escalate the situation further, you reluctantly nodded in agreement, “Fine, I’ll come. But this isn’t the end of it.” You shifted your eyes to the receptionist, she was somehow surprised herself. Her actions, It was a breach of protocol.
As they escorted you away from the restaurant, you felt a sense of being a pawn in a larger game, a feeling that was becoming all too familiar. ——— Azula sat calmly in her opulent study room, her posture relaxed, unpinning her hairpin and let her hair fall. She was waiting for you, expecting you to burst through the door at any moment, fueled by your anger and frustration.
Azula had done the evening’s event with precision, pushing you to your limits. She anticipated that this act would be the peak to finally see your raw astonishment that she believed you harbored for her.
The door opened, but not with force or drama that Azula had expected. You entered quietly, your expression unreadable, your usual kindled spirit replaced by an unsettling calm. Azula’s lips curved into a sly smile, intrigued by this new side of you.
“Well, well, Y/N,” Azula started, “I must say, I’m terribly sorry. I was expecting a grand entrance. Did you lose your fire along the date?”
You remained silent, your eyes locking with Azula’s. There was a depth in your gaze, a tumult of emotions you harbored beneath.
“Come now, don’t hold back my account. I know my little game at the restaurant must have… stirred things up for you.”
“Your games are getting old, Princess,” you finally replied, “Do you always need to manipulate situations to feel in control?”
Azula leaned forward, breaking a genuine smile. You hadn’t change at all. And Azula is enjoying this.
“Oh, Y/N, manipulation is such a harsh word. I prefer,” she paused, “strategic planning.”
She saw your faint smile, she knew you would not backing down. “Strategic planning that involves putting a homeless family in distress? You’re losing your touch.”
“On the contrary, I’d say my touch is quite effective. It brought you here, didn’t it?”
You side eyed her, “Maybe I’m just here to tell you that your ‘strategic planning’ is backfiring. You’re not as in control as you think.”
Azula’s eyes narrowed, she was both admired and irritated by your resilience. She had long for your anguish to confront her, but your composed defiance was a curveball she hadn’t anticipated.
She sighed. “Or maybe you’re just afraid to admit that you enjoy my little game. Admit it, Y/N, you love the challenge as much as I do.”
You walked to her, leaning in close, lowering your voice. “There’s a fine line between a challenge and a reckless game, Princess. Be careful not to cross it.”
Azula waved her hand dismissively, “Always so serious. Where’s the fun in playing it safe?”
“This isn’t funny, Azula,” your voice impatient, “Your little game at the restaurant, using that woman and her son—it’s cruel. You manipulated their distress for your own amusement.”
“I’m being cruel to be kind. I gave the boy the best medical attention. Plus, the sister received a job now—but a shame it will be in ruins. Anyway, There’s no need for you to worry about that.”
Your face redden. Azula could sense you’re infuriated. “How dare you use someone’s vulnerability for your own selfish ends? These are people live. Our people!”
Azula, usually unfazed, was taken aback. She felt goosebumps in your intense voice, a seriousness that was rarely encountered.
“You think I don’t know that?” Azula raised from her seat, “Everything I do, I do for a reason. You of all people should understand that.”
“Understand? What is there to understand about exploiting a desperate mother and her dying child? I want to see you vulnerable for once, Azula. I want to see you hurt, to see you break.” You roared as you were shaking. There was a palpable silence in the room as your words hung in the air. It was a raw, emotional confession, one that revealed the depth of your desperate goal to that date.
Azula did not know how to respond, your emotion was too intense for her to handle. Azula felt a twinge of something unfamiliar. Was it guilt? Regret? For a moment, her fortress of composure wavered.
“Is that what you really want, Y/N? To see me broken?” she asked, surprisingly soft and weak.
“I don’t know what I want anymore.” You choked, “But I can’t keep doing this. Not with you, not like this.” Tears, unbidden, spilled from your eyes, your resilience crumbling under the weight of your emotions.
Azula stood there, feeling a sudden urge to reach out, to offer comfort. It was an odd desire that clashed with her self-restraint, her need to always be in control.
You turned to leave. “Where do you think you’re going?” something within Azula compelled her to made you stay. It was a surge of emotion, random and messy, unlike anything she had ever allowed herself to feel. She rushed to you with a determined stride.
You suddenly paused at the door, looked back at Azula, watery eyes. “Every game has it risk, right, Azula?” your voice faltered, barely a whisper.
“What are you getting at, Y/N?”
Azula watched you looked down, thinking something. “In the next of your act, I promise you it would include real danger—a situation I’ll go that even you can’t control.”
Azula scoffed, “You wouldn’t dare, you’re not that reckless.”
That took so much to say for Azula. She half-expected to see your ego arise from the compliment. But as she looked into your eyes, she saw something that gave her a pause. There was no trace of the usual sarcasm or defiance. Instead, there was a deep, unsettling seriousness.
“Y/N, you’re joking, come on laugh it out,” Her heart pounded. “If you’re trying to provoke me, there are better ways.”
You remained silent, your expression unwavering. You turned to leave for real now, your steps resolute.
Panicked, Azula lunged towards the door. Swift and forceful, she slammed the door shut, effectively blocking your path of escape. Her heart raced with adrenaline and unusually breathless.
“You’re playing with fire, Y/N. Literally and figuratively.” Azula searched your eyes, looking for a sign. But all she found was an empty resolve that send a chill down her spine.
You finally looked back at her, your voice cold and distant, “Sometimes, you have to get burned to see the light. You’ll understand when it’s too late, Azula. When you’ve finally lost.”
Azula felt your words like a physical blow, her face twitching in pain, her mask completely shattered. She knew this was a trap. But the threat brought something in the depth of her own feelings—the potential cost of losing you, forever.
You two just looked at each other, thick with absolute silence.
“Don’t be stupid.” Azula gritted her teeth.
You pushed Azula away. Then your figure slipped from the door with a slam. The room felt colder. The air was suddenly thick that almost made Azula suffocate. The door closed, leaving Azula alone with her thoughts.
The game had change, and for the first time, Azula was uncertain of her next move.

Imagine Mai and Ty lee teasing you for your crush on the Princess of the fire nation, not knowing Azula is more than aware of your crush and intends to have some fun with it.
Tumblr media
"You all follow the bison. I’ll take the Avatar" Azula commanded. Ty lee and Mai nodded, stepping away but you paused "Azula can i come with you?". When Azula paused looking annoyed you rushed to explain. "I’m just keen to learn more about survival and combat, already this trip has taught me more than the academy ever did and I don’t want it to stop so I want to accompany you". Azula’s frown turned into a light smirk "you may accompany me, keep up" she said sharply before taking off into a run. You smiled before chasing after her.
The trip had certainly been interesting. You and Azula had faced a large group including the Avatar and Azula’s older brother Zuko but thanks to Azula you managed to escape. You made it back to your accommodation and once reunited with Mai and Ty lee they wasted no time in teasing you. "Please can I accompany you Azula. I can’t bear to be parted from you for a second!" Ty lee cried and you shushed her "stop it! Azula’s only in the next room". "I just learn so much from you because you're so talented and perfect please don’t ever leave my side" Mai added in and you rolled your eyes "I’m not that bad". "Ow please” Mai smirked "you’re so obvious! Just ask to sit in her lap next time or something". "Mai!" you cried going bright red and her smirk widened. "What we know you’d love to, your blush says it all". "Ow like you're one to talk, you used to blush anytime Zuko was around". "Yeah but atleast i dated him! I did something about my crush, you just stare after Azula longingly" Mai replied smugly. "I don’t stare at her" you cried and Ty lee frowned "you kind of do and your face gets all vague and expressionless". "We call it Azula-land" Mai grinned and you blushed. "Okay so I have a small crush....". "Huge crush" Mai corrected you and you sighed "huge crush on Azula but have mercy on me. I’m weak and she's just so...." you sighed and Mai and Ty lee smirked at one another before their expressions vanished. They stared behind you and you heard the door close. You turned to find Azula right behind you and gulped. "Don’t go quiet on my account....what were you talking about?" Azula asked. She walked into the centre of the room and perched on one of the chairs facing you. You blinked "I was erm....saying....". "She was talking about her mother" Mai improvised "Y/n was saying how her mother is just so annoying and possessive". You smiled at Mai gratefully and she nodded to you. "Is that true Y/n?" Azula asked and you looked at her. She was staring at you intently and you could’ve sworn there was a hint of a smile on her lips. "Yes it’s true" you said and Azula nodded standing up. "How interesting...i thought you were talking about someone else". You glanced from Azula to Mai and Ty lee frozen. "But i see i was mistaken" Azula smiled sweetly and you relaxed. Somehow you’d avoided a large bullet.
A week later you had made much progress on capturing the Avatar. There was a moment where you almost drilled into Ba Sing Sei and you thought everything would work out but then the Avatar defeated Azula and so you were back to square one, travelling the Fire Nation in the big clunky tanks. You were getting pretty bored of your routine when something happened to definitely keep you on your toes.
You stumbled into your shared room with Mai and Ty lee still dazed at what had just happened to you. You knocked over a table you didn’t see causing both the girls to turn and look at you. “Gosh y/n could you be any louder?” Mai called. In reply you just shrugged and Ty lee got a good look at your face. "Y/n are you okay?” Ty lee called “you look like you’ve seen a ghost”. Mai turned and stood up “yeah you’re even paler than me” and she tugged you towards a chair making you sit down. “What happened?” Ty lee asked and you shook your head “I...it was nothing”. “Well clearly not I mean look at the state of you...no offence” Mai replied. You searched for the words for a while but couldn’t think of how to start so you just said the most important word. ”Azula” you finally managed to say but that wasn’t enough. “Azula what?” Mai asked and you sighed. “I was dropping off the reports in Azula’s room like I do every day but today she was in there. I didn’t realise at first because she was behind a screen but then she heard me and she called out and she came to see who it was and...her hair was down and wet because she’d just come out of the shower and she smelt so damn good. I nearly combusted on the spot! Especially when she came over to me to read my report, she was so close to me and in nothing but a towel!”. Mai and Ty lee shook their heads. “We thought you were in danger and you’re just in Azula-land again”.
They both moved away from you and got back on with what they’d been doing. Meanwhile you were outraged. “I was in danger! Azula was right there and she looked amazing!”. Ty lee smiled “you know she probably did it on purpose”. “What?” you asked “why would she do that?”. Mai nodded “yeah you’re right Ty, I mean Azula’s routine is like clockwork and she also has everyone else’s memorised too. It seems a bit suspicious that she’d just forget she’d asked you to bring the stuff to her room while she happened to be in a towel”. “But what would Azula gain from that?” you asked. Ty lee smiled “well you are pretty obvious so maybe Azula just likes teasing you?”. “You think she knows I like her?” you asked panicked. Mai shrugged “it’s possible...”. You buried your head in your hands “Mai do you have your knives because I need you to stab me please”. Ty lee chuckled “ow come it’s not that bad!” and Mai nodded “yeah the fact she’s toying with you shows she’s interested in you”. “It does?” you asked and the girls nodded. “Let me put it this way. If Azula found you repulsive, there’s no way she’s make you flustered on purpose or encourage you in any way, right?” Mai asked. You shrugged “maybe...unless it was so she could brutally reject me to teach me the follies of romance”. Mai paused “okay I didn’t think of that, she could be doing that”. “No!” Ty lee cried “she’s not! Y/n Azula clearly likes you, or the fact you like her, but either way just relax! Azula’s having fun with this so maybe you should try to as well”. You nodded your head but there was no way you could let your guard down now, if anything your feelings became heightened around Azula.
Finally your weeks of patrolling the earth kingdom wilderness paid off. You found and defeated the Kyoshi Warriors which would’ve been reason enough to celebrate but Azula came up with the brilliant idea to steal their disguises and use them to infiltrate Ba Sing Sei. It was a fantastic plan the only problem was you had to look the part exactly or you’d be discovered. You’d never worn makeup before so you weren’t good at putting it on and despite starting first you were taking the longest to get ready. Azula was in the same room as you and had done her hair and makeup while you were still busy sighing and wiping away your mistakes, eventually she took pity on you.
"Here let me do it" Azula said and she spun you around to face her. "Azula i...". "Sit still and close your mouth" she ordered. You obeyed and sat as still as you could as Azula placed the makeup on your face only inches away from you. You stared at the floor worried a blush would show through the make-up. "Look up" Azula said suddenly and you paused "why?". "I can’t do your eyes properly, look up...i won’t bite" she smirked as she said that last part and you felt your heart speed up.
Azula did your lips last and she has a small smile of her face as she delicately touched traced them with the brush. "You have such lovely lips" she said softly "they appear very soft and full...i wonder if they are". You jolted in surprise and pulled away “what?”. “I just wondered if they’re as nice as they look” Azula shrugged putting the brush down “does that offend you?”. “No of course not!” you cried and Azula smiled “good”. She looked right at you, gazing at you from head to toe and you erupted into another blush. Azula chuckled softly and a sigh escaped her lips. “All done” she touched your chin lightly and turned your face to different angles as if inspecting it. Finally she stopped “perfect” she breathed. You blushed and Azula’s smirk widened, so blushes did show through this make-up...great.
As soon as Azula was occupied you rushed to Mai and Ty lee. “So you were right...Azula totally knows I like her”. “Was there any doubt we weren’t right?” Mai asked as Ty lee nudged her “what made you change your mind?”. “Well long story short she was flirting with me! I know that might sound crazy but I promise you Azula was trying to embarrass me and blatantly flirting!”. Mai and Ty lee looked at one another before smiling. “What?” you asked “don’t just stand there! Help me!”. Ty lee laughed and Mai even managed a dry cough. “Y/n Azula’s been flirting with you for ages”. “WHAT!” you cried and Mai smirked  “yeah...pretty much since the academy. How haven’t you noticed?”. You paused “Are you sure? What you guys count as flirting might be different to what I class as”. Mai rolled her eyes “Azula always chooses you when we split off into pairs. She checks you out every time you walk in front of her, not to mention she loves when you adore her and go all red like you are right now”. Ty lee nodded and you frowned “I...don’t know what to say”. “You could say we were right again?” Mai offered “I liked hearing that”. You chuckled despite yourself and shook your head “what does she want with me though? Azula is literally perfect! She could have anyone in the world!”. “Yeah...but she’s known you since we were all kids” Ty lee pointed out “you’re the person she is softest around so she clearly feels more comfortable with you than other people. Not to mention you’re just as hot as Azula so you’d totally fit”. “We would?” you asked and Mai nodded “yes Y/n, plus you’re totally her type but do us a favour and don’t just roll over and do everything she says okay? Azula has power over you but you also have power over her! She cares about you way more than she does us so don’t underestimate yourself. Stand up for yourself and don’t let Azula act all...well Azula”. You laughed “I’ll do my best”.
You infiltrated Ba Sing Sei and everything went exactly to plan, even down to the smallest detail. You were once again astounded by how good Azula was and watched her work in awe. She fooled Long Fen into “recruiting” her and tonight was the moment she revealed she’d been playing him all along. You were all so close you just had to carry out this evening perfectly and Azula had precautions to do that.
"Y/n i want you with me when i face long fen" Azula called. Of course those words would make you go anywhere with her and so you nodded obediently "yes Princess Azula". Ty lee and Mai shot you a *this is one of those moments* look and you resisted the urge to roll your eyes. Surely the blush on your face proved you were aware of that. Regardless you accompanied Azula and stood to the side, in the wings in case she needed you as she destroyed the man who ruled Ba Sing Sei.
"You were never even a player” Azula smiled and you felt a tingle go down your spine. Azula sat there on that throne so confident and beautiful....you looked away with a heavy sigh. She was flawless, you were convinced she had no faults and you’d never recover from your infatuation with her. Azula dismissed the dai li and smirked "Y/n come and stand in front of me". You stood at the bottom of her throne and she smiled "well aren’t you going to bow?". You got on one knee and bowed, Azula chuckled softly "i like seeing you do that". You blushed, wondering what she meant and jumped to hear her coming closer. She hadn’t told you to stand so you stayed kneeling. Azula circled you and smiled "there’s something just so....powerful about seeing people on their knees for you, utterly at your will, ready to do anything to please you....that is you isn’t it Y/n? You'd do anything to please me?". You looked up and nodded "of course Princess". "Stand!" she said suddenly and you did. You were slightly taller than her but Azula had a way of appearing bigger. "I have to leave to take care of my brother but you will stay here and keep my throne warm...then later, I want to see you on the ship when we’re on our way home. “I...have I done something wrong?” you asked and Azula chuckled “no...not at all, i’ll send word to you but I’m not sure what time so wait up for me. Can you manage that?”. You nodded “yes Princess”.
Azula somehow convinced Zuko to ally with her, captured her uncle and killed the Avatar all in one night. It was a glorious victory and everyone was in high spirits but you had one thing on your mind. The note from Azula arrived late like she’s said and told you to come to her room in exactly ten minutes. You did as she said and knocked on her door bang on time. Azula opened the door and smiled “I love how you’re always punctual” and she opened the door just wide enough for you to step inside. You stepped in and Azula didn’t step away. She closed the door sharply and you stood with your back against it.
“Well come inside then” Azula said suddenly smiling and you relaxed a little. She directed you to her sofas and poured you a drink. “To our victory” she said toasting you and you smiled lifting the glass “to your victory princess”. She seemed to like that and Azula nodded at you pleased. “So what are your plans when we reach home?” Azula asked. You paused “I’m not too sure...I guess I’ll have to return to my family”. “You don’t want to stay in my company?” Azula asked and you froze. “No of course I do! I just had no idea that was an option...I’d love to stay if you’ll have me”. Azula nodded “I can definitely live with the thought”. “Then I will stay” you nodded and Azula smiled. “You know I’ve rather enjoyed this trip” Azula told you and you nodded “me too, it’s rather annoying being a civilised lady all the time”. Azula nodded “I could tell you’ve been enjoying it and might I guess I’ve been a big part of that?”. You looked at her to find her smirking. “I erm...of course” you nodded “you’re a great leader”. “And you find me attractive too yes?” Azula asked making you crimson in seconds. “What?” you cried leaping to your feet but Azula just grinned.
"I heard you in the drill" Azula said softly a smile on her lips "i heard you sigh just at the thought of me...I realised Mai and Ty lee were in on it when they came to your aid and supposed it had been going on for some time....am i correct?". You nodded your head unsure if you were even capable of speech at this moment. "I want you to finish your sentence” Azula said suddenly and you frowned “what?". "On the drill you sad and I quote “I’m weak and she’s just so” before you trailed off in a deep sigh. Since then I’ve been wondering what word you were going to say, what single word were you going to use to describe me? What word could be fitting?" Azula mused "so i ask you yYn what word were you going to say and choose wisely".
You pondered Azula’s question and realised you truly had no idea. You tried to rack your brains for an answer but with Azula staring at you with that damned smile on her face you found it hard to think let alone plan an answer. Finally you just sighed "I don’t know what word I would’ve chosen as you see that was my problem there are so many good qualities to describe” you shrugged deciding flattery was always best. “You’re smart, the most cunning strategist i’ve ever met and your hunch is always correct. You are the best fire bender in the whole of the Fire Nation and watching you bend is an art form. You are strong and capable but also the most beautiful and stunning woman i have ever laid eyes on. From your muscular arms to your golden eyes and jet black waist-long hair...you are exquisite. So only one word comes to mind when I think of all that Azula so if i have to pick a word it would be this one....perfect". Azula’s smile told you that your answer pleased her. "Perfect?" she purred coming to stand right in front of you and you backed up without even meaning to "you think i’m perfect" she asked. You swallowed as you realised there was a wall behind you and Azula trapping you against it in front. "Yes, I can’t think of any other word to describe you, to me you are perfect in every single way". "That was the correct answer" Azula said before swiftly pressing you up against the wall and kissing you harshly. "And good answers deserve rewarding" Azula smiled "how do you wish to be rewarded?". You blinked utterly overwhelmed with the wonderful situation you’d found yourself “I...I don’t mind”. Azula tilted her head to the side. “There’s not one thing you can think of? Not one thing you want?”. “Well I want you” you replied blushing and Azula smiled “all you had to do this whole time Y/n...was ask”.
***
You returned to your room and bumped into Mai and Ty lee. “Y/n?” Mai asked spotting you “why are you still awake?”. You paused “I...why are you still up?”. “Because she’s a vampire” Ty lee replied and Mai rolled her eyes. “Ha ha now no dodging the question, where were you? We tried looking for you earlier and couldn’t find you anywhere”. You blushed “I was erm...with Azula”. Ty lee nodded “that’s nice” and went to walk away when Mai caught her arm “wait...at this time at night?”. You blushed and Ty lee gasped “Wait are you two...”. You blushed even more and Ty lee squealed jumping on you while Mai watched you mildly impressed “so you decided to do something about it huh? Only took you around 2 years”. “That’s rich coming from you” you replied and Mai shrugged “fairs”. “Omg this is so great! You can go on double dates together! You and Azula” she said pointing to you “and you and Zuko” she told Mai. You and Mai looked at one another before bursting out laughing. “Yeah that’s not gonna happen any time soon” Mai smiled widely “but thanks for the laugh Ty lee”. “Plus Azula and I...I’m not even sure if we’re dating”. Ty lee frowned “well even if you’re not you’re still the first person Azula’s ever shown an interest in. There’s no way she’s letting you get away easily. Mai nodded “I bet you will be seeing a lot more of her from now on...I just say about time”. You blushed and a yawn escaped you. “Ow she’s all tuckered out” Mai teased “I wonder why”. You threw your shoe at her making them both laugh. “I’m going to bed, goodnight!” you called and finally made it to your own room.
Despite all their teasing you were happy, their words had pleased you and you were hopeful this would lead to something good. Azula had been happier lately than you’d ever seen her and you were determined to see that smile on her face again.
_________
I feel like Azula would get on with anyone who fuels her ego and I would happily volunteer for that role!

Since we’re talking max angst and interesting directions… perhaps something with Azula and Ozai? Not necessarily in a pairing way, though do what you will. Something to do with all the carefully-hidden fear and complete loyalty Azula has for him. If you’d like a prompt, everyone I’ve ever cared about has either died or left me, except for you.
For this prompt game! (And also this one!)
Warning for reference to canon child abuse ahead
“Father!” Azula snaps around, shocked outraged rising so unexpectedly through her control that it’s almost—almost, she’s not sloppy, not like Zuzu—enough to seep into the braziers burning around them. “What is the meaning of this!"
“I’ve decided to lead the fleet of airships to Ba Sing Se alone,” Father repeats, not even—not even looking at her as he says it, staring instead at those banners, at that--that phoenix.
“I thought we were going to do this together,” she grits out, clenching her abs and forcing herself to exhale slow and ignoring the way her fire wants to spark, wants to boil up out of her. She did everything right, everything he asked her to do and more!
She gave him Ba Sing Se, gave him Zuzu and her useless Uncle, gave him the Avatar dead and out of the way and so what if he came back, Azula did it and everyone knew, she did everything she was supposed to and now—
“My decision is final,” Father says, smiling up at the airship festooned with his new symbol, and Azula will perform fifty katas to perfection before dinner because the words unexpectedly burst out of her without her permission:
“You—you can’t treat me like this!” she snaps, nails digging into her palms. “You can’t—"
“Everyone I’ve ever cared about has either died or left me except for you, Azula,” Father interrupts, tone abstract and eyes nearly glittering with intensity as his gaze finally drifts to her, and Azula ruthlessly swallows the rest of it back.
“My brother,” he finally continues into the crystalline silence, pausing as if to see whether she will attempt another interruption—as if she’d be so foolish as to point out that the useless lump of a man left, and three times at that, and that just what Azula knows of it.
“My father.” Dead, and for the best.
“Your mother.” Dead, or she’d better be.
“Your brother.” A dead man walking, and Azula doesn’t permit herself to blink at his inclusion.
“All of them, every one of them, has left me,” Father murmurs, shaking his head as if in sadness, and Azula holds her shoulders back and loose and understands without allowing herself to think about it all the ways that left and died are the same.
“Except, of course,” he adds, almost as an afterthought, head cocked and his eyes hooded and intent on her face, “For you.”
Azula breathes in a steady, even breath, her inner flame perfectly still as she bows, perfectly correct. “Father—”
“You would never do that to me, Azula,” he interrupts, words soft and still cutting through the noise of the courtyard as she carefully doesn’t think of the everything he asked her to do and the more she gave him. “Would you?”
“Father—”
“You're so like your mother these days, you know,” Ozai interrupts, Azula holding herself perfectly at ease as he reaches out to brush a lock of her hair back into place, his right hand lingering over her cheek, his thumb tracing the ridge of her brow, fingers resting along her temple, her hair, firebender hot just like her own skin. “Do you remember her?”
They have spoken of her, occasionally, why would—
“No, Father,” Azula says, quickly adding on, “And I would never leave you, Father. Never,” she says, firm, confident, resolute with just that edge of brashness the way he likes it and never thinking of the new scar in the stone behind the throne in the catacombs, a scar from lightning she knows Zuzu can’t generate, he’s too stupid for it. But for all his uselessness Iroh on that ship had been able to—
Father suddenly smiles, slow, his fingers pressing over her hair, cradling the side of her head. “I know you wouldn’t, Azula,” he murmurs, and she keeps her eyes open as his palm drifts from the bridge of her nose to her temple, feeling the calm, calm, calm steadiness of her inner flame. “I know.”

In this world, Zuko is the prodigy and Azula is the banished princess that chases the Avatar to return home. Of course, things are a little different from canon than simply copying and pasting one character onto another's story.
Starting with the fact that they love each other deeply and want to be reunited for good.
But communication is for losers, so it might take a while.

Where to Reach - ambivalentangst
moodboard made by the incredible @thinkingisadangerouspastime/@starkravinghazelnoots
Crown Prince Zuko discovers his bending when he is five and his sister is three, and she’s the first person he tells, juggling a flame while she admires its beauty. When he shows the rest of his family, his mother’s chopsticks clatter to the table, and when Zuko looks to his father, his eyes are wide with shock.
His grandfather speaks first, the head of the table, and approval runs thick through his tone: “Well, look at that. A true prodigy, wouldn’t you agree, Ozai?”
“Indeed,” he hums.
//
(Princess Azula won’t summon her first flame—a guttering, timid thing—until she’s seven.)
//
Or, in a world where Zuko is the prodigy and Azula is the one banished, destiny shifts accordingly.

Y/n enters the room where Mai and Zuko are making out
Y/n; you need to start locking your door
Zuko; or you could start knocking
Y/n; I have a question
Mai; this should be interesting
Y/n; so Azula and I have been cuddling every night and it’s nice and all but she falls asleep and she’s got all that space on her side of the bed and I would kinda like to have some room when I sleep if you know what I mean
Zuko: my sister cuddling?
Y/n; yeah
Mai; sorry, y/n can’t help you wear cuddly sleepers,
Mai leaves the room
Zuko waits till Mai leaves
Zuko; OK so the cuddling thing this is what I do
Y/n; oh, but I thought you two were cuddly sleepers 🙃
Zuko;😒 she is, I’m like you I need the room, so I just roll her to her side of the bed when she’s asleep, it’s that easy
y/n; OK what if she wakes up
Zuko; well, then, it was nice knowing you 🙃
Y/n;😒 that’s reassuring
The next day Azula Mai and tylee are having lunch together Azula arm is heavily bandaged
Tylee; Azula, what happened to your arm?
Azula; oh, you can blame y/n they spun me right off the bed last night
Tylee: spinning that’s so cute you guys play games in bed🥹
Mai:🙄
Azula: no, no not like that They said Zuko does this thing where he rolls Mai to her side of the bed when she falls asleep
Mai; WHAT?
Azula: apparently our partners absolutely need their space when they sleep 🙄
Mai: oh he won’t have to worry about that tonight 😡
Next day Zuko walks up to y/n in the garden
Zuko; I’ve been looking for you
Y/n; join the club
Zuko; this isn’t funny Mai has been giving me the cold shoulder
Y/n; what does that have to do with me?
Zuko; think about it
Y/n; Oh, she must’ve found out
Zuko; more like somebody else told somebody else then told her
Y/n; 😬 my fault, azula has forbidden me from taking any more of your advice
Zuko; good cause I’m not sharing anything else with you 😡
y/n; at least she knows you need your space when you sleep
Zuko; I slept on the couch last night.
Y/n; 😬

Dating Ozai’s Angels
Including: What they do when they realise they like you, how you get together, how they act when you start dating, what they’re like as a partner, what others think of your relationship, how they defend you, the L word, family, careers, fights, pets and more!
Team Avatar version here

Azula
Tumblr media
As we saw in The Beach episode Azula is confident in everything except flirting so she'd be a mess when she realises she has a crush on you
She'd do the typical immature thing of being mean to you to prove just how much she really doesn't care about you. Then one day she'd go too far and really hurt or upset you. She'd feel that annoying snagging feeling of guilt and attempt to apologise to you but she'd struggle and it would come out wrong.
So the two of you would be at an impasse. You didn't understand why Azula was treating you this way and Azula was at a loss of how to explain her actions without confessing her crush on you.
Enter clueless Zuko.
Zuko would be the one who would accidentally let it all slip. You're venting to Mai one day and he overhears and is so confused. "But you know she likes you right? That's why she's acting this way". Mai would glare at him and your jaw would wide drop open telling Zuko you didn't know that.
Zuko was convinced Azula was going to murder him and the thought did cross her mind but then you told Azula you felt the same way, her happiness overshadowed her rage.
You started dating and immediately Azula puts on a brave front. She acts very dominant and showy. She takes you out to all the fancy restaurants and buys you tons of expensive clothes and jewels to establish her dominance in the relationship. However it's all an obvious act to cover up her insecurity. She's never dated anyone before and nobody can make her feel the way you do. She tenses up when you walk into a room and her name never sounds as beautiful as when you say it. So Azula is fighting a losing battle trying to keep up this stoic facade and it all falls away the day you call her yours.
You were with Mai, Ty lee and Azula and got into a silly competition as usual. You wanted to see who could throw a helmet the furthest and Azula of course won. However you were trying to share in that victory which Mai protested. "Azula won not you y/n!" she cried. "Yeah but Azula is mine so when she wins I win and vice versa". If it was anyone else trying to share in her glory Azula would've set them on fire but hearing you refer to yourself as her and she as yours...that made her feel all giddy like a silly teenager. She couldn't really speak but just nodded her head and passed you the flower crown Ty Lee had given her as a trophy.
Everyone would be sceptical and a little unconvinced when you both started dating, Zuko and Mai included. They'd all wonder how on earth it was going to work and doubt Azula's intentions with you a little...but then they'd see Azula explode when a nobleman insulted you or how she'd even correct her father when he said your name wrongly and they knew they had nothing to fear.
We also know Azula has a little trouble believing she is lovable and a huge problem with saying the L word. So naturally you say it first. You wait until you've been dating for around 6 months to make sure Azula is comfortable and won't get scared. You do it in private so she won't feel flustered or overwhelmed. Azula is smart so she can tell you have something to say and just outright asks what it is. Your plan was to cook her a nice meal and then tell her but instead you just tell her then and there that you love her. You stress how she doesn't have to say it back but that you just thought she should know. A silence follows and you get back to preparing the food. Azula asks a question about the food and you go along with her change in topic as if nothing happened. Then at the end of the night Azula thanks you for the food and for what you said. You tell her it's no problem and that you meant every word. You see her struggling internally with your words but she nods and doesn't try and dispute your claim.
Azula tells you she loves you randomly, a year and a bit after you've been dating. She's in a mood because the council meeting went badly and all the men were disagreeing with her just because of her age. You started acting silly, imitating the councilmen, to cheer her up and while at first she's not amused she soon starts smiling and then laughing at how goofy you look. "You're such a clown, why on earth do I love you?" she asked. You felt her freeze and looked up to see her watching you like a hawk. You smiled and gently kissed her hand "because I'm the luckiest person in the world". She relaxes in relief and wraps her arms around you. You don’t make a big deal of it but later just before you fall asleep Azula whispers "I do you know... love you I mean. I realised I didn't say it properly earlier". You shook your head "earlier was just perfect but thank you. I love you too Azula". You can't see her blush in the dark or the shock in her eyes when she realises it is true. It is possible for someone to love her but you can feel it. You gather her up into your arms and hold her as she softly cries. In the years to come it remains one of the happiest moments of Azula's life. The day she realised she was loved.
Azula is SUPER supportive of you and your career and knows all the drama about your co-workers. You might think Azula wouldn't care enough to listen to all the small talk and rants you give her after a long day but you'd be wrong. When Azula likes someone she's all in and so she remembers everything you say about Amura the nice girl who is kind to you and Mejai the guy totally flirting with you. Then at any company event she makes sure to mess with all the people you don't like and plays them all wonderfully. She's an involved partner.
She literally cannot believe you have any faults, one time you got rejected for a job and you had to physically restrain her from going down there and causing a scene because HOW COULD THEY NOT WANT YOU?
When you and Azula fight it's dramatic just like the Princess of the Fire Nation herself. Azula has a temper and so sometimes after a long day of putting up with Zuko she can snap at you. You're not the type to take this lying down though and so you challenge her behaviour. Cue an hour of loud arguing with Azula packing a bag to move back to the palace. She never gets out the front door though, it's just an empty threat. You always make up the following morning but of course Azula doesn't beg forgiveness or write you a letter about how sorry she is. She does something like making you breakfast or dropping by your work with lunch. She will say sorry when you're alone together and then all is forgiven.
When you get a pet together, Azula is 100% that person who says she wants nothing to do with the pet and then ends up loving it more than you. I can totally see Azula with a dog that she loves to exercise with and train. You better believe your dog is going to be the fittest, smartest, prettiest dog the Fire Nation has ever seen.
The best thing about dating Azula would be, you feel so loved and protected. Azula is passionate and being with her feels like a whirlwind of emotions and love. She throws absolutely everything into her relationship with you and there’s nobody better suited to be your partner.
Mai
Tumblr media
Mai is a tough cookie. She doesn't reveal her feelings easily and you'd have no idea she had a crush on you. So for you to get together there'd definitely be another unfortunate soul who sticks their foot in it...probably Ty lee
When Mai realised she was developing feelings for you she'd hate it and distance herself from you. You'd go from seeing her multiple times a week to her very obviously avoiding you which made you worry you'd done something wrong. So you go to her house and ask for her which horrifies Mai. Her home is where she hides away from the world so to have her crush show up on her doorstep is terrifying. In her panic she tells the housekeeper to say she's not in, even though she clearly is. Your worry then turns to sadness as you believe Mai hates you when you thought you were friends.
Ty lee notices the mess Mai has created and tries to convince her to come clean to you but Mai's too scared (not that she'd ever admit that of course). So Ty lee recruits Azula and they set up a plan to get you together but it all goes wrong and ends with Ty lee just yelling "Mai has a crush on you!" and then running for her life while Azula laughs.
And that's how you get together!
Mai didn't give anything away on your first date so you had no idea if it went well or not. You were slightly nervous to be dating Mai anyway. She's a super cool stoic knife expert who never seems to get bothered by anything. Not to mention her last partner was the Firelord so big shoes to fill. So when you parted ways you wondered if she'd even want to go out with you again but Ty lee told you she came home and actually blushed when she talked about you! You couldn't stop smiling all-day
The first time you made Mai properly belly laugh was a few weeks after you'd been together. You were talking to Ty lee and casually just imitated Azula's voice. You didn't really think about it but you heard a loud snort and turned to see Mai covering her mouth while her shoulders shook. "Mai?" you asked while she tried to catch her breath "you...just sounded so much like her" she managed before dissolving into giggles again. It was so unexpected and cute, you found yourself laughing too. You did the voice some more and Mai laughed even harder before telling you to stop so she could breathe. Tears were streaming down her face from the laughter and she was holding her side trying to stop. You just stared at her in admiration and your Azula impression became your favourite thing to do.
Everyone would be really curious about your relationship because Mai herself is a woman of mystery. There would be a lot of question about how you got together and what you’re like as a couple etc but not from her best friends. Azula and Ty lee know Mai is picky so if she’s actually giving up her alone time to be with you, you must be worth it. No follow up questions needed
Mai is a very attentive partner. She might seem like she doesn't care or think about the small things but she does. Once you told her how you were always slightly cold and noticed how blankets started showing up more and more around her house for you. Your favourite flowers would suddenly appear in her garden and she'd always make sure to tell you when she thought about you in her day because you'd once said it made you feel special. Dating Mai makes you feel very cared for.
Mai is quite introverted and can sometimes find socialising with anyone tiring. So sometimes you'll just meet up and sit together without saying a word. Mai will lean or lay against you and just enjoy being with you without having to be "on" at the same time.
Relatedly she loves falling asleep in your arms and has an adorable happy expression on her face when she does. She claims she just likes you warmth but you know she loves the cuddles too.
Mai isn't super loud about your relationship but she won't hesitate to take someone down if she hears them talking rudely or suggestively about you. She's protective and you're hers even if she doesn't shout it from the rooftops.
Mai realises she loves you when she feels you understand her. She realises she feels seen by you without even having to say a word. You don't get confused by her or try and change her. You appreciate her for who she is and that's how she knows she loves you.
With your career Mai is the subtle kind of supportive. She's not threatening to burn down companies like Azula and she doesn't love to hear about your coworkers for more than 10 minutes but she's very attentive and caring. If she gets home before you she'll draw you a hot bath or put your clothes near the fire so they're warm. She is there for you in other ways.
Mai is used to being ignored or not taken seriously so she NEVER does that with you. Even if she doesn't share your passion for things she'd never deny you them and does anything you ask to help get you there. She'll run flashcards with you if you're prepping for an exam or do mock interviews to help you with job searching. She actually really gets into it and she rejected you from a fake job once because your answers weren't good enough but that's Mai. She invented tough love.
Mai would pretend you meeting her family wasn’t a big deal but it was really. While she doesn’t need their validation she does want them to like you together as a couple. You’d notice this in the small nervous behaviours Mai did on the way to her parents. So despite Mai’s words that you don’t have to try hard, you would go all out. You’d bring out all the charm you could muster and be the perfect blend of respectful but funny. You’d compliment her parent’s cooking and even help Tomtom with his homework. When you leave her family is clearly very impressed and Mai is just a tad smug. She’d link arms with you on the walk home and quietly whisper “thank you”.
Is brutally honest but it's not a bad thing. You know you can always trust her to tell you the truth and she promised you she'll never lie to you. You believe her because when Mai makes a promise, she keeps it.
In fights Mai can become pretty cold...not because she means to (although sometimes she does) but mainly because when she's hurt or confused she goes inwards and struggles to express herself. You usually have to give her a day or two to put together her thoughts and Mai really appreciates how you never try and force her to talk when she's not ready,
Mai is the type of person who says we're not getting a pet and means it. So you respect that and then one day she tells you a cat wouldn't be so bad so of course you drag Mai around town that same day to find one. Mai strikes me as that person who doesn't put in a lot of effort with animals but they like her and have this automatic bond. Sometimes all she has to do is look at your cat and it knows to run to bed or go outside. It's eerie honestly but Mai is just that good.
The best thing about dating Mai is you’d feel so special and privileged to have her love.
Ty Lee
Tumblr media
When Ty lee realises she likes you she’d be so bashful and obvious. She’d gush over anything you said and would say your name in every other sentence which drives her friends mad.
However this wouldn’t last long as unlike Mai and Azula, Ty lee would probably tell you she likes you pretty much immediately
This isn't to say Ty lee is naive or reckless, she'd definitely assess her chances of you liking her back and put in a lot of effort in her plan to tell you. She'd take you out for the afternoon to a coffee shop or flower store you really liked and then take you for a picnic in the royal grounds. There she'd confess her feelings to you. She'd assure you she really valued your friendship and if you don't feel the same way that's totally fine.
When you return her feelings Ty lee smiles brighter than you've ever seen which is saying something. She'd squeal and throw her arms around you in a very happy hug.
Similar to Azula, Ty lee would want to tell everyone you were dating but for very different reasons. With Ty lee she never even planned it, just every time she sees you she'd get a burst of joy and blurt out to whoever is near "that's my partner" proudly. Soon pretty much everyone in the Fire Nation knows you're together
Ty lee is the queen of PDA and affection but she'd also listen to what you want and come up with a happy medium if you weren't. You don't like holding hands? How about linking your arms or pinky fingers? Not a fan of cuddling? She suggests her putting an arm around you over the blanket so she knows you're there but you don't feel smothered. You're not very good at expressing yourself in a relationship? No problem, Ty lee communicates what she wants for you clearly and always asks to make you feel secure.
While Ty lee loves affection and PDA she'd also have special moments where it's just the two of you. The first time she tells you she loves you she'd plan for you to be alone and for any significant milestones she always makes sure you have privacy. She wants you to herself in those moments and the only company she needs is yours.
All of Ty lee’s friends can see how smitten she is with you and so Mai is a little worried at first. Ty lee loves first and thinks later so she’s worried you could take advantage of her. So you’d definitely have to prove yourself to Ty lee’s best friends or they will make you disapear. Luckily the way you feel about Ty lee is pretty obvious too so they don’t doubt you for too long.
While Ty lee is incredibly sweet that doesn't mean she won't stand up for you. One day Azula makes a comment about how there was a crease in your trousers and laughs about it. "I don't think that's funny" Ty lee replies and Azula rolls her eyes "what because they're your partner we can't have a laugh?". "No, we can't have a laugh because it's not funny to comment about anyone's appearance but especially my partner's and if you keep doing it then we're going to have a problem". Azula (and Mai) had never had Ty lee stand up to her before so was thrown and a little unsure how to respond. Azula shrugs it off but she never commented on you in front of Ty lee again.
Ty lee is super nervous and hesitant to introduce you to her family and you don't get why until you arrive at their home. Ty lee's sisters all have a resemblance to her and Ty lee keeps nervously glancing from you to them. You realise Ty lee is feeling insecure and make sure to keep randomly shooting her smiles or taking her hand. When you leave you tell her how much you like her and how wonderful she is. Ty lee bursts into tears right there and then making you wonder if you've done something wrong but she shakes her head. Telling you how relieved she is that you still want and like her. She confesses, through tears, that she loves you and it seems so perfectly spontaneous just like Ty lee. You of course tell her you love her too and Ty lee bursts into tears again.
Regarding your career Ty lee is a certified hype woman. Anything you do she thinks is amazing so she is constantly cheering for you. She'll send you well-done texts while you at work and show up to any events super proud because you're her partner. She loves telling people what your job is because she thinks it is amazing just because it's what you do.
Fights with Ty lee are emotional. Ty lee of course cries because that's just her normal response when she's overwhelmed and doesn't know how to deal with her emotions. This typically makes you cry too so it's just two crying people yelling at each other. You tend to make up pretty quickly because you both dislike being sad and miss one another. Mai insists on being invited to all your fights because she finds it a good social experiment.
Ty lee is the type of partner that would turn up on your doorstep with a box of puppies because "SHE COULDN'T JUST LEAVE THEM THERE!". So your place is full of animals of all kinds and Ty lee is constantly trying to sneak in more. You're the only self-control Ty lee has in this aspect so you have to be the grown-up a lot. "Ty lee we cannot take in another dog, we already have 4". "But look how floppy his ears are! Please y/n?". "Why don't we see if any of our friends want a dog? I bet Sokka would love him". "Okay fine...”.
The best thing about Ty lee is, you know no matter what, you have a person in your life who will always want what’s best for you. Ty lee would move a mountain for the people she loves and you are very priviledged to be included in that list.

New post-canon multi-chaptered fic anyone? Featuring established Zukka, Azula's ambiguous maybe-redemption, Fire Nation sibling dynamics, cute fluff, supportive friends and partners, political intrigue and machinations, and figuring your life out while enduring the pressures of event planning.
[In rare moments of whimsy and indulgence—usually accompanied by cake—Azula would sometimes think of herself as one part of a triangle. Half of a paired dao. The northern point of a compass, even, always guiding straight and true. But she thinks, as she contemplates the single cowering candleflame and the stifling darkness, that perhaps she’s been a lone flame all along. No matter, though. Zuzu claims to have changed. Maybe Azula will change, too. Maybe she will forge herself into a spear, instead, striking straight and true. Or an arrow in the night. A knife in the dark. Her eyes flick up to where Zuko just disappeared from her sight, and she snaps, sharp, precise, and feels lightning-tinged fire arc off her fingertips. Or in the back.] Or, Six years after the war, Azula has finally reached her age of majority and is about to be crowned Zuko’s heir. If only Sokka could shake the feeling that she’s plotting something… If only Azula could keep Water Tribe from bumbling into her plots.
Chapter One is here!
