Summary: After Zuko confronts his sister about Aang’s death, you voice your concerns about the situation.

“You should be proud of yourself,” you commented, lifting your cup of tea.
“Please Y/n, I’m always proud of myself. I mean just look at me,” Azula responded with a smirk.
You rolled your eyes at your girlfriend’s behavior. Azula had just conquered Ba Sing Se, the safest city in the earth kingdom, and on top of that, she also slew the avatar. Now, that you were back in the palace, both of you decided to celebrate the victory back in Azula’s room.
“I’m serious,” you spoke, “Not even General Iroh was able to conquer Ba Sing Se and he’s much older and more experienced than you are.”
“Don’t compare me to my uncle,” Azula scoffed, her eyes focused on her cup of tea. “He is a quitter and a loser. I am the Fire Nation’s greatest soldier.”
You shook your head and stood up, stepping towards your girlfriend. “Come on,” you smiled, stretching out your hand for her to take.
“What are you planning Y/n?” She asked but let herself be pulled up by you anyway.
“Is that important?” You answered, wrapping your arms around her waist.
Azula chuckled, resting her hands against your chest, “It isn’t but I’d still like to know.”
“I was planning on treating-“
“Azula!” Zuko threw the door open, making the princess step away from you.
“Why’d you do it?” Zuko questioned, his twisting with anger.
“You’re going to have to be a little more specific,” Azula responded, rolling her eyes in annoyance.
You sat down on your chair again, leaning back to watch Zuko and Azula. It annoyed you that the prince ruined the moment but there was nothing you could do. Sitting through the situation should end it fast enough.
“Why did you tell father that I killed the avatar?”
Azula sighed, “Can’t this wait until tomorrow? We were celebrating before you rudely interrupted.”
Zuko shortly turned to you but failed to notice your anger, “It can’t!”
Unlike her brother, Azula noticed your balled fists and clenched jaw and decided to give the prince the answers he wanted, “You seemed so worried about how father would treat you because you hadn’t captured the avatar.”
A chuckle almost ripped its way out of your throat, there was absolutely no way Azula had done it to do her brother a favor.
Azula locked eyes with you, instantly recognizing the amusement on your face before she turned back to Zuko, “I figured if I gave you the credit, you’d have nothing to be worried about.”
“But why?” Zuko asked, voicing your question out loud as well.
“Call it a generous gesture to thank you for your help. Now, would you finally leave us alone?” Azula finished with a fake smile.
Zuko huffed before he left without another word. You took the opportunity to stand up after making sure he couldn’t hear you anymore.
“What’s the real reason ‘Zula?”
The princess turned to you, “I just told Zuko, didn’t you listen to me?”
“Oh I did listen to you,” you responded, stepping closer to her. “The thing is, I don’t believe you. Out of all the people you would share the glory with in front of your father, which isn’t a lot, Zuko is not one of them.”
“What makes you think that?” Your girlfriend questioned, avoiding the piercing gaze of your eyes.
“Azula please, you wouldn’t even genuinely share credit with Zuko if you were about to be fed to the dogs.”
Azula let out an audible breath, you were the only person who’s able to see through her lies.
“Alright. Zuko was hesitant when I asked him if there was a way the avatar survived so I told father that he slew the avatar in case he was hiding something,” the princess explained.
“So you think that there’s a way the avatar is still alive?”
“I’m not entirely sure,” Azula admitted, “But if there is, it’s better when Zuko has to face the shame.”
You nodded, “You know this could get us in a lot of trouble right?”
“Of course I do but why are you so concerned?”
You took Azula’s face in your hands. “I just don’t want our plan to get in danger. I want to see you succeed but I can’t guarantee that if the avatar’s still alive.”
You felt your girlfriend shiver under your touch before she answered, “If the avatar actually survived, then we’ll fight him again Y/n. I’m confident in my skills and so should you be.”
You chuckled and placed a kiss on her lips.
“I just don’t want to see the Fire Nation defeated but I’m sure you’re right,” you whispered after you pulled away.
When you wanted to step back, Azula gripped your arm, “I think you forgot a spot.” You chuckled and kissed her once more, letting your worries fade for at least a moment.

Dating Azula Would Include:
Azula isn't...the nicest. She's kind in the way that she loves you, but also wouldn't hesitate to laugh at your mistakes.
Azula, to say the least, is a good lover. As long as you get over being a massive bitch sometimes. She'll laugh or snicker at some servant or pedestrian doing something stupid.
Dating Azula means being friends with Mai and Ty lee. You have no choice. Once the two girls learn about you, it's all over, this is your life now. You have no choice.
Dating Azula means you get recognized a lot, meaning people see and know who you are. Just one glance at you, and you're recognized by everyone around you.
Dating Azula means you get kisses at the randomest times of the day. You two could be walking around and she'll pin you to a wall and pull you into a deep kiss. She then prances off, acting like she didn't just kiss your lips off.
Azula is only affectionate in private or around people she trusts. She allows Mai and Ty lee to see her kissing, touching, loving you.
Azula doesn't share. By no means are you allowed near ANYONE she would consider competition. Mai and Ty lee are on that list too. She has no issues keeping you away from anyone she doesn't like.
Azula has a hard time expressing her love, with the life she has lived it's understanding. She more than likely buys you things, things she deemes worthy of your touch. So you see a dress or a peice of jewelry you like? Just ask.
Azula tries her hardest not to be a bitch when your feeling down. Dating her means you see the vulnerable side of her, she knows you'll show that side of yourself too. In her eyes seeing the real you, it's a pleasure and a bit overwhelming.
Azula gets her red lipstick all over your face when she kisses you. Make out sessions are very evident to those who pass by you. All they see are red smudges and an even redder face. Too bad she enjoys seeing you all quiet and flustered.
As your girlfriend, Azula takes care of many things for you. She knows that being in a relationship with her is hard, so she takes the workload off you. This is one of the many ways she says 'I love you' without actually saying it.
She doesn't care if her father approves of you. It doesn't matter, I mean at first it did. Now though, now she'll do anything you say. If you say it nice enough.
Azula will take you everywhere with her. She's paranoid that you might get hurt without her. So, the obvious option is to bring you with. She's so smart.
As your girlfriend, she doesn't get a little control happy. She decides who gets to give you attention, she decides what you eat, everything. Although that's just her paranoia and control complex. Dont worry, after about 5 to 6 months of dating, that's stops.
While she hates people wanting you, she loves to show you off. Oh? There's a big important banquet coming up? You're coming with.
"You look amazing, it doesn't matter what they think so hurry up. I know what I said- shut up!"
You more than likely make fun of her. For what? For her getting embarrassed by the fact that you're holding hands in public. She might not seem it, but trust me, once you two are in private. That bright blush comes out of her cheeks.
Azula gets angry when you think bad about yourself. If you're good enough for her, you are 10 times better than anyone else. That is just a fact.(in her eyes)
"Am I supposed to care? I don't care that you think your fat, you're better than any man or woman. The fact that I love you, is more than enough proof."
Aggressively loving. She gives you everything aggressively. Her love, her anger, her joy and happiness, her lust. Everything is aggressive. Thata how it should be though.(wink wink)
If you two were to ever break up, it's more than likely because of her status or controlling nature. She feels the need to prove she loves you, even if it's a bit crazy sometimes.
She'd be mad about the breakup, she'd do anything to get you back. I mean anything, she'd give you the world. Azula is more than definitely scared of losing you, not like she'll admit it.
Azula will yell, scream, fight. She'll do anything except admit she's afraid of losing you.
If you two get back together, she's even worse. Not for long though, especially if you already had a very long term relationship. She'll feel weak for letting you almost leave. She's angry, but at the same time afraid. Azula takes measures to make sure you never leave her again.
She is loving person...just ask Ty lee and Mai.

Y/n; Azula are you all right?
Azula; you fear me, to don’t you
Y/n; what?
Azula; You’re the only one left everyone else has abandoned me and that’s because they’ve lost their fear of me but you’re still here so you must fear me that proves it
Y/n stares at her confused, not knowing how to answer

The Real Reason Azula Smirked When Zuko Was Burned is…
A lot of ink has been spilled over why Azula smirked when Ozai burned and scarred Zuko.
Some argue whether Iroh’s flashback was reliable. Let’s assume for the sake of argument—as uncertain as it is in canon—that it happened exactly as Iroh remembers and describes it.
How could an 11 year old child smirk while her brother is burned and brutalized in front of everyone?
There are many conflicting arguments.
Argument 1 - She’s a monster.
Some say she is a sadist or a psychopath and it’s as simple as that. She just enjoys watching her brother suffer.
But this doesn’t track with what we come to learn about her later, and is outright contradicted by materials that actually give us insight into her POV such as the comics and novelizations, as well as writer interviews.
The novelizations which were written contemporaneously (and thus aren’t a retcon) show us an Azula who cares about Zuko, even though she’s competitive with him and jealous that mom favored him. She thinks Zuko is weak and brings misery upon himself and she is willing to turn on him to protect herself. Yet she still wants to help him get stronger and take his place as Prince. She still wants his love. She takes the risk to lie on his behalf at Ba Sing Se for him. She didn’t suspect Aang had survived until later.
The comics take this further, showing that in Azula’s ideal world, Zuko was never banished or burned at all. He is happy and loves her and isn’t abused or scarred.
Even the head writer who designed both Zuko and Azula’s arcs claimed she loved Zuko more than anyone except their father.
So then what is it?
Argument 2 - It’s A Coping Mechanism
Some point to “Identification with the Aggressor”, a well documented psychological coping mechanism in which victims of trauma—especially children who are especially malleable and vulnerable—will mirror their abuser and conform to their ideals in an attempt to stay in their good graces and be spared. This isn’t always a conscious decision either, it’s often done subconsciously, which only confounds this further.
I’ve written more about this and how it pertains to Azula here.
However, outside the the knowledge that this is common in abused children and Azula’s behaviors meet the criteria, we don’t have any direct confirmation that this is the case.
Argument 3 - She Is Brainwashed
Others point out that every adult in the room is complicit in this act if not outright enjoying it in the cases of Ozai and Zhao.
Azula is a small child that’s been brainwashed from birth to believe this is right. After all, Ozai is their unquestionable despotic leader as well as her only remaining parental figure. Why would she question? How would she even know this is wrong if she’s been taught this is right by everyone surrounding her?
Does she even understand the full impact of what is happening here or does she think this is Zuko getting his comeuppance for being “weak and lazy”, with no concept that he’s actually being scarred for life and is soon to be banished? After all, not even jolly Uncle Iroh is objecting or moving a finger to stop this. He only looks away.
This is supported by the fact that Iroh laughed about burning Ba Sing Se to the ground even as he was killing them. Zuko and Azula both laugh at this joke and Ursa doesn’t chastise them. She only smiles. Clearly this kind of violence is normalized in the Fire Nation.
We also know Azula attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, which in the Kyoshi novels we are told is quite violent and that it wasn’t uncommon for adults to encourage students to duel on Agni Kais. Students sometimes died. So there is reason to suspect this is a product of her culture.
Argument 4 - She is Faking It
“Azula always lies” they say. She is shown to be an excellent liar, but more importantly that she represses her vulnerabilities and feelings.
This is shown when Toph tries to sense Azula’s lies only for Azula to completely repress any reactions and prove Toph can’t determine when Azula is being truthful.

The Beach gives us a more sympathetic example, showing us an Azula who empathizes with her brother and tries to cheer him up when he’s sitting by their old family beach house in depression. She calls him to join them at the shore, and then proceeds to walk all her friends and Zuko through their traumas with surprising gentility.
When it’s her turn however? She dismisses her own trauma with a flippant joke. Masking the moment she starts to feel emotional about it.
It’s even shown when Zuko makes Ty Lee cry by calling her a circus freak. Initially Azula laughs, but when she realizes it’s upset Ty Lee, Azula’s face changes to one of remorse and sadness. However, the moment Ty Lee turns to look at Azula, Azula quickly hides this expression and masks it with a look of indignant petulance.

Azula does indeed seem to fake negative reactions to hide her vulnerabilities.
Argument 5 - It’s a combination of 2-4
Perhaps there is some truth to all of what we have seen in arguments 2-4. Azula is clearly brainwashed and does identify with her abuser to the point of being inappropriately enmeshed with him and suffering total ego fragmentation when he discards her. She does repress her emotions until she finally unravels. She was also quite young when this show happened and it’s possible she didn’t know just how serious it was all going to be.
But consider this…
Still that isn’t enough for detractors, who claim that even given her environment and the circumstances, it’s still too sadistic and cruel for her to grin here. That she should’ve shown some outward sign of disruption.
If you are or ever were one of these detractors, let me ask you this.
Did you feel any sympathy when Azula fell apart, uncomforted by her newly granted power, arguing against her own conscience in the form of her estranged mother, telling her that her methods are wrong? When Azula replied “what choice do I have?” did you feel any remorse for this child who had been exploited for her skill and groomed into living weapon by her power-hungry father, with no regard for her psychosocial development or emotional wellbeing to the point she cannot even relate to kids her own age normally? Did her desperation to use fear and control to keep others close because she knows no other reliable way, because such skills are taught and she’s only ever learned manipulation and coercing and fear, showing us exactly what Ozai uses to control her just as used violence and estrangement against Zuko, move you?
When she laid broken and sobbing and screaming at the end after Zuko and Katara “put her in her place” as Zuko put it, did you feel any pain in your gut?
Or did you cheer?
Where you glad to for her to get her comeuppance?
Did you feel justice was served and Zuko triumphed that day?
That he was right, he could “take her” by exploiting how “off” she was aka her mental illness and spiral into psychosis?
Because if you did, then you know exactly why a person would smirk while watching someone who needs help get brutalized.
If narrative framing can persuade you to believe that an unloved, mentally ill, abused and exploited child soldier being brought to sobbing, screaming, chained up, broken, tears… is the RIGHTEOUS result! Imagine what a lifetime of propaganda from birth and programming from your own father with no one to show you another way would do to you.
Why did Azula smirk while Ozai burned Zuko?
You already know the answer.

If Azula was in The Agni Kai with Ozai instead of Zuko and he ordered her to fight for her honor what do you think she would do when she fight 
First of all, I highly doubt the Agni Kai would happen because Azula wouldn't disrespect Ozai’s general plan without being invited to the war room in the first place. Nor would Azula burst out screaming at the general in the war room in front her father and the Royal War Cabinet. She would ask her father for permission to speak and criticized the plan with any faults she sees in its execution. Azula wouldn't cared about the immorality of it given it helps the Fire Nation achieve a massive military and political victory over the Earth Kingdom.
However, if Azula ever for some reason had to fight an Agni Kai with her father. She would do her traditional cultural and religious duty of fighting in Agni's name and for the Fire Lord aka her father.
You would be branded as cowardly for trying to escape from an Agni Kai Duel and not stand on business for your honor. No matter who it is. Which is why Azula would fight Ozai without being scarred or banished after a good match. Zuko joining Ozai’s war meeting uninvited, yelling at his elderly war general, and refusing to commit sacred ritualistic Fire Nation tradition of an Agni Kai duel would have caused Ozai to kill him immediately if he wasn't his son!
Folks, act like Ozai just woke up one day and decided to challenge his son to an Agni Kai duel for no reason! Zuko broke Royal and Cultural Traditions twice during that day. If Zuko believes strongly in his convictions during the war room then he should have no issue dueling his father over them instead of an elderly old man passed his prime. Iroh didn't want Zuko to join Ozai’s war room because he knows Zuko is hotheaded and will act on his emotions instead of stoicism and logic.
There in the Fire Nation, they stand ten toes on their business!!!! 👔 🏦

You did not have A good start to life
you were abandoned by your parents who were dirt poor you had nothing
you had to live off the streets and had to fight to stay alive stealing food Was part of your routine however, everything would change 
As you were trying to flee from the cabbage merchant that you had stolen from you, ended up bumping into a stage coach two Noble women exited the coach They were older women. Identical, twins.
They took pity on you they paid the merchant and took you home with them
you were suspicious of these two at first but overtime came to accept their quirkiness their names were Lo and lee
They spoiled you With the finest clothes in the nation expensive luxurious food anything you wanted they would get you
later, they expressed their desire to adopt you as neither of them had never had any children of course you accepted For this new life, they had graciously given you
A little time had rolled by, and it was discovered that you were in fact, a fire bender however due to this discovery, being so late in your youth. Your bending skills were not very developed.
Your new mothers. Spared no expense. Providing the finest bending masters in the nation.
However none of them were able to help you progress in your bending skill many of them gave up and believed that you would never going to progress further than the basics
However lo and lee refuse to accept that you couldn’t be taught if their child wanted to be the best fire bender in the nation then they were going to make that a reality.
And they knew exactly what they needed to do you needed a master, who was a true prodigy Didn’t give up so easily someone who is on another level than any other in the fire nation princess Azula
your mothers served as her advisors so they knew they could get you acquainted with the princess easily
the opportunity came and they had gotten permission to bring you to work alongside them as an advisor in training at the palace
you accompanied them the next day to the palace your mother introduced you to the princess herself, the two of you were very close in age Azula was polite to you at least as polite as her character allowed.
She respected her advisors so that respect extended to you
when your mothers Told her the situation how many of the top instructors had failed to teach you the art of fire Bending they tried to persuade the princess to consider taking you on as her first student 
for the princess, the idea of her a 14-year-old prodigy, a fire bending master with her own student was enough for Azula ego to accept
She took you on her student
she warned you that almost wasn’t good enough and that you would succeed under her but everything would have to go perfectly and that any mistakes well there would be consequences for failure
Although the princesses status was intimidating, you had dealt with trials all your life, you knew for certain you could handle whatever the princess threw at you.
