Dec 5: Unplanned
So basically uh they both received a letter from "eachother" for a date. But neither wrote that so there's a matchmaker who's obviously obvious who it is, I'm not even gonna name.
They somehow never mentioned it again so they both think it was the other side who planned it till this day

WAS OZAI AN ABUSIVE FATHER TO AZULA?
Tumblr media
I know most people will immediately go "Yes, he fcking was!" without the slightest hesitation. And I agree. Ozai was certainly an abusive father, not surprising considering the fact that he is a total narcissist (Some people say he is a psychopath, but this isn't true). Narcissistic parents are very likely to be abusive towards children even if it goes unnoticed by others, even by the children.
However, there are also many people out there who claims Ozai never abused Azula. I also sort of agree with this. Yeah, he didn't abuse her physically or verbally like he did with Zuko. But let's not forget psychological and emotional abuse are still abuse. And Ozai totally takes the cake!
When we take a look at their family roles, we clearly see that Ozai was the narcissistic father, Azula was the golden child and Zuko was obviously the scapegoat (also the invisible child at times). And this dynamic makes a ton of sense. So, let's start with the definitions!
-Golden child, as you can understand from its name, is the child who is being favored by their narcissistic parent. They're often lauded for having something special that the narcissistic parent values; such as academic performance, athletics, good-looks... It can be anything. And for Azula, it's because she was a firebending prodigy and an extremely bright strategist, also clearly inherited her father's ruthless nature. And not surprisingly, golden children often have more privileges that the other children don't. And we clearly saw that Azula was given a huge and majestic Fire Nation ship only for her.
Tumblr media
Azula was obviously spoiled rotten by her father. But spoiling a child isn't exactly the same thing with showing affection. But still, I can totally imagine Ozai giving Azula anything she wants in a materialistic way, doesn't matter how expensive it is. It's no surprise that Ozai poisoned his daughter's mind with a false sense of superiority instead of teaching her empathy and compassion... However, while he was giving her anything in a materialistic way, he wouldn't give a damn about giving her something to satisfy her emotional needs.
-As a contrast to the golden child, the scapegoat is the least favorite/disliked child of the narcissistic parent. Doesn't matter how hard they try, doesn't matter how much they make a progress, doesn't matter how good they actually are, they will never be good enough for the narcissistic parent. They remain as a constant failure and a disappointment. Zuko is literally the embodiment of a scapegoat!
-And lastly, the invisible child is the child who goes unnoticed in the house. They're not recognized and often ignored by their narcissistic parent. Zuko was also ghosted by Ozai in the past. Like...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So now that we are certain about the family roles, we can get deeper into the relationship dynamic between Ozai and Azula.
Narcissistic fathers in real life also tend to favor their daughters over their sons (it's also the same case for narcissistic mothers, they often favor their sons and are rather harsh towards their daughters). Because in the deep down, they fear that son threatens his authority over the family, so he is a potential compitetion in the narcissistic father's eyes. And since Zuko looks nearly identical to his father, this only the encouraged the deep fear in Ozai about his authority being shaken by his son.
But a daughter on the other hand, admires her father, just like how Azula admired and idolized Ozai. Narcissistic supply here everyone! So in other words, Azula was the "flying monkey" in their relationship too. For those who don't know it, let me explain it shortly:
Tumblr media
If you want to learn more about it, you can check the link here, https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/women-autism-spectrum-disorder/202010/are-you-narcissist-s-flying-monkey%3Famp&ved=2ahUKEwjCtO7iwJD8AhVsX_EDHQzyB-kQFnoECAcQBQ&usg=AOvVaw1ck3Gk4T-LS0zOmbrijSff
So, why do I think that Azula was the flying monkey? It's because;
-She totally worshipped her father,
-She was obeying his commands,
-She was doing all the dirty works for him...
Think about it, Zuko in Legend of Korra went back to Fire Nation in order to protect his daughter (who was already an adult) from Red Lotus. And Ozai sent his 14 year old child after Avatar, literally the most powerful person in the world.
Yes, you can say that Ozai sent Azula because Zhao failed, Zuko was useless and Iroh was a traitor... And at age of 14, Azula was already a crazy powerful firebender. So, according to Ozai, if someone really could take down the Avatar, it would be his own golden daughter (which she technically did in season 2 finale)
So strangely, Ozai definitely believed in Azula and considered her a strong warrior who would bring glory to Fire Nation, but it wouldn't stop him from using her as his personal weapon. But I'm pretty sure that was Ozai's way of "love" his daughter.
For narcissistic people, love is a complicated case. They only love their children as extensions of themselves. Their supposed love for their children is there, because the children are their parts, their flesh and blood. And Ozai is no exception, of course. Ozai's "love" for Azula was ultimately toxic and conditional.
As a contrast to this, we get a healthy relationship between Ursa and Zuko. They loved each other dearly. Ursa's love for Zuko was genuine and unconditional. Now, that's how you show love!
But because Ozai's approval was hard to earn, Azula had to work for her entire life. She had to do everything perfectly, because Ozai isn't exactly a type of father who would tolerate anything less than perfect. So Azula didn't really have another choice other than being perfect as it befits the Fire Lord's model heir. But of course, Ozai's extremely high expectations forced Azula to become obsessively perfectionistic. It's also a common case in real life. The children of the narcissistic parents often come across as perfectionists in order to please their parents, and Azula is no exception. So, it's no wonder why she cracks at some point due to the all the pressure she lived through for her entire life... And yes, putting so much pressure on a child is definitely a psychological form of abuse.
Tumblr media
So in a sense, Azula had to "walk on eggshells" for her entire life in order to be seem as the ideal princess for the Fire Nation. Oh, and for those who don't know what "walking on eggshells" means,
Tumblr media
(Here is a simple definition. You can check its details)
And why do I say all this? Because Azula was extremely cautious around Ozai in order to not offend or disrespect him. Otherwise, she would become a failure in his eyes, just like Zuko. And we all know how Ozai treats failures... Not nicely
So at the end of the day, Azula was psychologically abused by her father. And she was emotionally abused as well, because not caring/ignoring a child's emotional needs is definitely neglect, and neglect is definitely a form of emotional abuse. Which is, again, not surprising since narcissistic parents only care about their golden child when they perform something good. Other than this, they don't give a shit about the child's emotional needs and mental health.
And let's not forget, the golden children are very likely to become narcissistic when they grow up too. So, Azula became just like her daddy. While some of her antisocial traits were innate, they're definitely encouraged by Ozai. So Azula didn't only inherit her father's cruelty in nature, but was also influenced by his cruelty in nurture. Which makes their relationship very interesting. Because Ozai created a monster just like himself
Tumblr media
But strangely... Ozai is a son of a narcissistic father too, but he wasn't a golden child. Just the opposite, he was the scapegoat of his family! Azulon notably favored Iroh and didn't give a shit about Ozai. Worse, he was seen to be cold and harsh towards his own son, just like how Ozai was cold and harsh towards Zuko. That means Azulon definitely Zuko-ed Ozai. And the abuse that he suffered his father's hand turned him into the megalomaniac asshole he is today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Not exactly the stare of a loving father, is it?)
Which means Ozai projected his own insecurities on Zuko (and it gets worse since he remarkably looks like him and becomes a constant reminder of his weaknesses), and he also projected his grandiosity on Azula, that's why he doted on her skills. Think about it, he truly shows a certain respect towards Zuko when he was told that he slaved the Avatar. In fact, it was the only time that Ozai felt proud of his son.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, abuse was an endless cycle in the Fire Nation royal family. From Sozin to Azulon, from Azulon to Ozai and Iroh, and from Ozai to Zuko and Azula... They were all circles of the chain, only to Zuko with Iroh's help to break it and ending this toxic cycle for good. Which is a fascinating story in my opinion. And if the cycle continued, Azula could very well become an abuser as well, copying her father. After all, being a victim doesn't prevent someone from becoming an abuser too, which is exactly what happened with Ozai.
Long story short, Ozai indeed abused Azula. But it's a complex situation, not as simple as some people like to dismiss. But their relationship is definitely very interesting in my opinion, and it really stands out as a realistic portrayal of narcissistic father-daughter relationship in the series.

Fictober 2023 Day 4
Read on AO3 Fandom: Avatar: the Last Airbender Prompt: 29 - "That's all? Easy." Rating: Gen Characters: Zuko, Azula, Ozai, Ursa, (Iroh and Lu Ten mentioned) Ship: N/A Warnings: implied child abuse, mentions of a child character committing murders Notes: AU where Zuko is trained to be a spy and assassin for Ozai.
Many within the Fire Nation would say Zuko and Azula were like night and day; which was very much the truth.
Azula was well known to be the golden child, the light of the Fire Nation. She was a firebending protegee who became the youngest person to create blue flames at the age of 10. She was also considered to be a tactical genius.
Zuko on the other hand was seen as Ozai's disappointment heir. He was not a strong firebender and to the point, the young prince will never be seen firebending in public. He was considered too emotional to be good at strategy or war. Zuko was often considered to be hidden in the shadows of his younger sister; little did they know that that was how he liked it.
It all started when the boy was 10.
Zuko was sitting by the turtleduck pond while he read a theater scroll.
"What are you doing, dum-dum?" Azula asked.
Zuko startled at the voice and dropped his theater scroll.
"Leave me alone," Zuko snapped. He leaned down to pick up the scroll.
"Are you reading one of those stupid scrolls that Mom gets you?" Azula asked knowing full well the answer.
Zuko blushed and protectively pulled the scroll into his chest. He knew that his younger sister was more than willing to burn it if she got her hands on it.
"None of your business, Azula," Zuko snapped.
Azula let out a sigh that only an 8-year-old who thought they knew everything could.
"Maybe if you spent as much time as you do reading theator scrolls you would actually be good at something," Azula said.
"I'm good at stuff," Zuko protested.
"Really like what?" Azula asked.
Zuko froze. He was good with the sword according to Master Piando but he couldn't say that. If he told Azula then it would make its way to their father and Father would be so mad.
"Sneaking around," Zuko finally shot back.
It was true as growing up with Azula and Father had ensured that he knew how to not be seen or heard.
"I bet you can't sneak into Dad's office," Azula said.
Zuko knew exactly what his sister was doing. She was setting him up so that he would get in big trouble with their father. None of them were allowed in that room. However, the 10-year-old's pride didn't allow him to back down.
"That's all? Easy," Zuko said.
A wide smile of a predator appeared on Azula's face. He knew at that instance that he had played into her hand, but Zuko wouldn't take back the words.
"Great then go do it," Azula said.
"I will," Zuko shot back. The boy stormed off to go do it with his heart in his stomach.
~~~
Ozai did a quick scan of his office before he sat down at his desk. He could never be too careful as he planned how to usurp his brother while he was at Ba Sing Se.
Ozai then began to work on his plans and the actual work the Fire Lord had assigned him.
It was towards sunset close to the time that they would eat dinner when he heard the noise.
It sounded like a bang and a whimper.
Ozai walked over to the cabinet (that he swore he looked at when he first arrived in his office) with a flame in his hand ready to burn whatever decided to sneak into his office. When he opened it he was met with a surprise.
Instead of some animal or small assassin, his oldest child looked at him with gold eyes wide in horror at being caught with his hand frozen on his elbow likely rubbing where he bumped it.
Anger rose in Ozai. He had told his children that they weren't allowed to be in his office. Of course, his failure of a son wouldn't listen to direct orders.
"How long have you been in here?" Ozai demanded. He hadn't heard the boy enter the room but he also couldn't have been in here before him.
Zuko flinched back as far as he could go.
"I don't know before you came in here," Zuko said.
"Liar," Ozai snarled. There was no way that the boy could have hidden from his search.
Zuko shrunk back.
"Honest, there is a small gap between the cabinets and the ceiling. After you sat down I hid in the cabinet in case you looked up," Zuko pleaded.
Ozai looked up at the mentioned gap and saw it. Ozai had dismissed it as a security threat as it was too small for an assassin to hide in and too high for a hole to be cut into to listen to him or see what he was doing. Clearly, he underestimated it like his son.
His son remained hidden for hours and likely hours more if he wasn't so clumsy.
Zuko was an awful firebender. He wasn't in any way smart. He was brash, impulsive, and far too sensitive to really be worth anything, but perhaps his talents could lie elsewhere.
If Zuko was so silent and sneaky he would make a good assassin. It would be shameful if word got out but the boy could be just the tool he would need against Iroh. After all his brother and his nephew adored the boy and they likely wouldn't think twice about telling their secrets to him which would get back to Ozai.
Yes, this boy will actually be of use to him.
"Follow me," Ozai said.
Zuko shot his father a confused look. Ozai paid it no mind. He walked through the halls with his son following behind.
Ozai then barged into the room that his wife was in. She seemed to be reading some scroll. She looked up in confusion and concern.
"Ozai..." Ursa began.
"You will teach him everything you know about poison," Ozai said. He left no room for arguments He left his wife and son staring after him in confusion.
~~~ Book 2: Earth Kingdom
Zuko knelt down in front of his father.
"You wished to see me," Zuko said.
"Your uncle is a traitor," Fire Lord Ozai said.
Perhaps that should have surprised Zuko but it doesn't. He knew that his uncle didn't like the war anymore nor did he care for Ozai. Iroh had always attempted to get close to the siblings after he returned 1 year after the failed siege. Azula had never given the man the time of day. Zuko had once wanted to but between the amount of classes he was taking and the inability to talk about them, Zuko ended up pushing his uncle away. Then two years later Iroh agreed to search for the Avatar like his father before him and that was the last he had seen of the old man.
"I want you to kill him and make it seem like it was the Earth Kingdom," Ozai continued.
Perhaps the order should have filled him with horror and pain, but it didn't. Zuko just felt numb. His uncle was like any other life he had taken just related to him and considering how little they knew about each other it might as well just be a stranger.
"It will be done, My Lord," Zuko said.
Ozai waved his hand to dismiss his assassin son.

You know what I wanna see? Genuine proof that Ozai loved Ursa, Zuko and Azula. I want to see some form of humanity from him. I would actually love if it was revealed that he genuinely fell in love with Ursa and that for at least a few months they had a happy marriage. It would just add some complexity to him and deep character traits that he needs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Secondly, I want to see Iroh and Ozai as brothers. Now, I'm sure that Bryke kept them separate throughout the series for a reason. And the series is still really great without them interacting. But I want at least one comic going over their childhood or adulthood and their sibling dynamics. I want to see how Azulon raised them and if that contributed to Ozai being so twisted and sick in the head. Like seriously we've seen all about Zuko. I want to see the Royal family before the events of the Search.

I won’t lie to you, I like the idea of the Fire Nation royals being happy together at one point and genuinely loving one another especially Ozai and Ursa. Hear me out. Its solely because I like drama and “Ursa and Ozai were genuinely in love at one point and had some similar values before his ambition, extreme favoritism (abuse) ruined the family dynamics” is a lot more fun to play with than “Ursa and Zuko are saints who never liked Ozai and Azula and they were pure before Ozai woke up, slapped a puppy in the face and single handedly created the horror that is child abuse”. I feel like the second one is boring, doesn’t match up with what’s in canon, makes the characters feel 2D and most importantly makes it sooo boring.
Tumblr media
Look at her. LOOK 👏🏾 AT 👏🏾 HER👏🏾. That’s the Ursa I want. The morally gray Ursa who doesn’t see imperialism as a bad thing and even normalizes it, who plays with Zuko and reassures him, who seems to more or less ignore Azula and who literally poisoned her father in law to save her son. And from the implications seemed to do at least most of the heavy lifting, that’s the Ursa I miss. I love a morally gray character who’s not annoying as shit (Dumbledore, Sirius Black, L from death note, etc) I want to see more of that Ursa in fanfics.
I’m gonna say it. I also want Ozai humanized. Again, hear me out. I know that he’s a child abuser and an imperialist and much more but he was not born one. Just like all of us he starts off a blank slate and is slowly learning and growing into the person he became which is why I want him humanized. Not justified, not excused, not even painted as being slightly right, just humanized and given an explanation for why he is the way he is and showing that he’s not just a mustache twirling villain by demonstrating that he most likely wasn’t always pro-“Scar my son without hesitation” and showing that a part of him most likely cared about his family even a little bit. That’s how you make a fic spicy, with grayness and humanization

What's with this fandom and flat out ignoring the actual villains in the room?
Ozai's parenting screwed up Zuko and Azula, but somehow Ursa is worse compared to him. Kuvira made the conscious decision to become a dictator with many crimes under her belt such as her "summer camp" to weed out non Earth Kingdom pure blood citizens but somehow the blame is on Suyin. Unalaq merges himself with a dark spirit and uses it to severe the connections between Korra and her past lives, but guess who get fingers pointed at their face? Spoilers: it's not the guy who's main goal was to plunge the world in eternal darkness.
It's so frustrating because Ursa, Suyin and Korra are characters that deserve so much better than fans targeting them with their misguided slander when the actual perpetrators are right in front of them.
It stems from a few things:
1 - With Kuvira, she is an extremely likable and relatable villain. People want to absolve her of guilt whether consciously or subconsciously just because they like her. It’s a similar situation to Azula where she’s such a strong presence that people can’t attach bad actions to her. It’s one of the reasons a lot of people think Kuvira’s prison camps and giant robot are “OOC” because “in character” for them would just be her acting like a boss babe but not really doing anything bad. Su becomes an easy scapegoat because there is one, tiny, minuscule moment in B3 where Lin thinks Su might be working with the Red Lotus, and people just ran with that apparently.
2 - With Ozai, it again goes back to Azula. Azula’s issues in the show always result in her mother being brought up, and if someone lacks the inference skills to realize what’s going on, they’ll just think that Ursa caused Azula’s issues. From canon, Ursa struggled to connect with her daughter despite wanting to, and Azula in her teen years subconsciously knows that missed connection with her mother is why she is so messed up. But again, if you have the mental capacity of a peanut then this may not be clear. Since Ursa is relatively unknown in terms of backstory within the series, she’s an easy scapegoat because people can paint any picture they want with her. Not to get too much into another topic, but the exact action of people just formulating whatever backstory they wanted with her is why people hate her portrayal in the comics.
3 - With Korra, it’s just people still bitter that Korra even exists. They over-emphasize every mistake she makes to glorify how “perfect” Aang was (despite that not being even remotely true). You can look at any bad event that an antagonist caused in LOK and find at least one person putting 100% of the blame on Korra simply because they have some undying devotion to defending the original series. I find that unbelievably sad considering nothing about LOK is trying to minimize or compete with ATLA at all.
4 - And most importantly, it is people simply trying to analyze things in a way that makes them feel smart. The obvious answer to a bad thing happening in a story is that an antagonist did it, but they want to seem smart and subversive. Their whole value is placed on feeling smarter than a Nickelodeon cartoon, and they will make the most outlandish statements devoid of any context just to make the show seem “bad.” Unfortunately, in a world where there is an epidemic of videos and metas over-analyzing the most basic of story elements in stories, this is a byproduct: people who fabricate problems in stories to analyze just for clout.

A big part of me believes thats if in the postcanon azula was put out of the publiceye (like exiled or in prison/mental institution), all the firenation will be like the town of Encanto, with all the "we dont talk about bruno" thing. And now I can't stop to think in an Au where Kiyi or Izumi want to know about her and ask to the GAang (especially Zuko) and they answer singing with their own version of "we dont talk about azula"

Zuko & Azula: Eyes
I was checking out the Avatar arts in my gallery, and then I found the old collages that I made:
Tumblr media
Zuko indeed looks a ton like Ozai here. And I made this collage to point out how similar they are in appearance.
However, then I realized how their eyes are completely different.
Yeah, Zuko has light golden eyes like Ozai. Yet his eye shape is very different from his father's.
As you can see better in this one:
Tumblr media
Again, they're looking pretty similar (No sh*t Sherlock, almost like they're related!)
Yet, their eyes are very different.
Zuko's eyes are larger, rounder, and much softer compared to Ozai's.
And it isn't only his eyes, his eyebrows are different as well. Zuko's eyebrows are comparatively softer and s shaped whereas Ozai's are longer and hard angled.
And apart from that, Zuko's hairline also comes softer on his forehead. Ozai has a very visible widow's peak.
But, do you know who has sharp eyes, hard-angeled eyebrows and a visible widow's peak like Ozai?
Duh! Here's your answer:
Tumblr media
(They look nearly identical here tho. Eh, genetics)
-"V" shaped hairline? Checked✅
-Long, hard-angeled eyebrows? Checked✅
-Sharp eyes that could puncture a hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battle ship and leave thousands to drown at sea? Also checked✅
Tumblr media
Despite looking pretty similar to Ursa, Azula inherited Ozai's sharper features.
And speaking of Ursa, let's compare her eyes to her children's too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, Ursa has a darker shade of gold in her eyes, which she and Azula have in common.
But despite sharing the same dark golden/amber eye color, Ursa and Azula's eye shapes are completely different.
Ursa's eyes are larger, rounder and softer, just like Zuko's. And her eyebrows are s shaped too, also like Zuko's except she thins it.
So, what's the point of this entire eye comparing?
I do believe there's symbolism involved, that is why.
->Sharp eyes are often associated with serious, intimidating personalities. Which suits Ozai and Azula's characters very well.
->And as a contrast, soft eyes are often associated with kindness and innocence. Which also suits Ursa and Zuko's characters.
->So Azula's sharper features symbolizes how she inherited her father's personality. And it makes it clear he was the parent that she was closer to.
->It's the same case for Zuko. He inherited his mother's personality. And it clears the fact that he always felt closer to his mother.
But... What about eye colors?
I'm not sure if there was a symbolism going on with the fair gold or brownish gold eyes since Fire Nation people seem to have both.
Sozin, Ozai and Zuko have light ones. Iroh, Ursa and Azula have dark ones. Zhao is somewhat in the middle, not too light nor dark.
However, I do think there's a symbolism with the shades based on the parent-child relationships:
-> Zuko has Ozai's eye color. So whenever he looked in a mirror, he saw his father's disapproval.
-> Azula has Ursa's eye color. So whenever she looked in a mirror, she was her mother's judgement.
At the end, their eyes were a constant reminder to the Fire kids that they were disappointments to their parents.
But their parents' disappointment is not something they could fix. Because Ursa and Ozai were polar opposites as parents.
-> Ursa valued kindness and compassion.
-> Ozai considered kindness and compassion as weaknesses.
-> Ozai appreciated ruthlessness and cruelty.
-> Ursa disliked ruthlessness and cruelty.
-> Ozai praised brutality and despised mercy.
-> Ursa despised brutality and praised mercy.
-> Ursa seemed to favor Zuko, because he had a gentle heart.
-> Ozai hated Zuko because he had a gentle heart.
-> Ozai favored Azula because she was a firebending prodigy.
-> Ursa neglected Azula because she already had her father's approval.
The list goes on but I think I made my point.
Doesn't matter what Zuko and Azula would do, they were doomed to be accepted by one parent and disapproved by the other.
Basically, darned if they do and darned if they don't.
So at the end, Azula and Zuko didn't have much choice other than choosing a certain side.
Zuko chose love and kindness, like his mother. Which is symbolically portrayed with his softer features.
Azula chose fear and violence, like her father. Which is symbolically portrayed with her sharper features.
Yet, whatever they do, they're destined to live with the eyes of their parents who didn't accept them. They will see their parents' judgement 'till the end of their days...

This is for an AU that I have been working on and off for the past couple of years. Ursa never hears that Azulon orders Zuko's death. Ozai hires an assassin which Zuko escaped from. Ozai, later on, becomes Fire Lord and Ursa remains within the palace with their new child Princess Kiyi. Ursa also has a different past than the one she has in the comics.
This is a scene that happens later on in the series than I am at and told from Zuko's perspective. Depression and life have been kicking my ass (wrote this instead of the essay that is due tomorrow but not the point) So pain.
Sorry, not sorry Zuko and Ursa.
Zuko glared at the metal wall of his prison cell. He had worked so hard to avoid this fate but now his father was definitely going to kill him.
There was a loud metal creek that sounded through the cell. The door was to Zuko's back but he didn't bother turning around. It was likely Azula bragging about her accomplishments or Ozai saying that he should have killed him 6 years ago.
"My brother-in-law says that you go by Li." Ursa's voice rang through the cell.
Zuko's breath froze in his lungs. So long ago he dreamed about hearing his mother's voice again. A part of him wanted to turn around.
"He also says that you have an uncanny resemblance to my dead son, Prince Zuko."
Zuko heard the shuffling of clothes and the slight thump of something hitting the metal floor.
"It's been six years since I have seen him. he would be 16 years old now. Iroh is sure that you are him even with the new scars and the age." Ursa continued. He could sense the desperation, anger, and sadness coming from her.
At that moment, Zuko wanted nothing more than to confirm that he was indeed her son. Then they would hug and cry the way 10-year-old him had imagined on one of those long cold starving nights when he wanted nothing more than to curl up in the safety of his mother's arms.
Yet he couldn't do that. The mother from his memories was gone. She quickly replaced him once the typical mourning time has been completed. All those sleepless nights he had wondered if anyone cared about him or if he was just a problem that everyone had to deal with until he was gone and was promptly forgotten.
Besides Ursa was always a good actress.
"I need to know are you my son?" Ursa begged.
Zuko wanted to deny it. Tell her that she had the wrong teen, but he feared that despite all this time she would still be able to recognize his voice. He knew it was impossible but somehow Iroh had recognized him and he hadn't seen his uncle in eight years.
"Please if you have any mercy please just tell me! I need to know the truth are you really my son? I am begging you!" Ursa begged.
A tear slid down Zuko's right cheek, yet he remained silent.
A sob sounded from the woman behind him.

I know that it’s not very good form to say so but I’m gonna say it. I don’t like the Search. I don’t like the Search. But you know upon further reflection of the comic I’m not blaming Ursa entirely(except for the bad writing she gets but I’ll touch on it later), but I’m gonna blame her ex-boyfriend who I personally refused to name here because he kinda just drops out of the narrative unceremoniously and nobody really remembers he is there so he’s officially the ex-boyfriend to me. Anyway, that rant aside, he emotionally manipulates a woman who was distressed in a vulnerable state into going to effective God of the avatar universe to forget her children. This is something she calls herself out on in the comic. It’s portrayed “romantic”. Sure taking advantage of an emotionally vulnerable woman who is escaped abusive situation and manipulating her into situation where she forgets her two children that she deeply cares about just so you can live your fantasy life all the while you’re well aware that she has two living children out and don’t even bother to check up on them for her is creepy and manipulative and disgusting to me. Now I don’t blame Ursa for being emotionally vulnerable. And again in further hindsight, I don’t blame her for changing her face that was adults because of they again after mentioned ex-boyfriend who took her emotional vulnerability and used it to manipulate her into a situation. And again the comic tries to frame it is romantic and all I could think of it “oh yeah I could bet that this is good to go over well to anybody who’s been in abusive situation whose act suddenly frames themselves that most awesome thing ever and doesn’t take it to that again she has two children in an abusive situation that he could very well check up on them, but chooses not to do so because he wants to live his fantasy life, and therefore leaves her children and it’ll be abusive situation and doesn’t even bother to check up on them.”
And yes, the narrative does call her out some of her bad parenting and she even heard her amnesiac state realizes that she messed up raising Azula. And yes, I’ll admit I’m an Azula fan and this is probably coloring it someone but I just think that the Search was an elite advice story. It could’ve been a very interesting story of Ursa trying to maintain her while still trying to keep tabs on her children and being progressively horrified and what’s going on but being powerless to stop it could’ve been a compelling narrative and that regard but nope, again creepy ex-boyfriend manipulating, an emotionally vulnerable woman. I just say this. Writers, if you were trying to make him sympathetic, it really utterly failed because he comes across as a creep.

I want to clear up a mistake people make with Azula and Ursa.
Ursa didn’t play favorites.
Ursa didn’t think Azula was a monster.
Ursa simply, unequivocally, just didn’t enable Azula’s worst traits like Ozai did.
Ozai’s favorite child was Azula, but Ursa still loved her more.
Because enabling isn’t love.
What did Ozai’s enabling do? It made Azula into the type of person to never have any loyal friends. It made the type of person that Mai and Tai Lee would betray at the risk of their own lives.
Ursa pushed Azula to be with her friends. To be with Zuko. Ozai pushed Ursa away, and both kids suffered for it. Azula became a sadist, enjoying seeing her brother get burned—while Zuko was pushed away because he cared for his people.
Azula thought her mom hated her because her mom was the only one who cared enough to tell her no.
