Azula’s Earth Kingdom Doll

In the Avatar: the Last Airbender season two episode, “Zuko Alone”, Zuko flashes back to a time when he and Azula were both young children. In one of these flashbacks, he recalls Iroh, then a general in the Fire Nation army sending home an Earth Kingdom knife for him and an Earth Kingdom doll for his younger sister, Azula.

Azula scorns the doll, sticking her tongue out and setting it on fire. Much has been made of this reaction in fandom, mostly by Azula apologists who seek to make Azula look better by alleging Iroh didn’t care about her or was sexist and cruel to her because of it. I’m not particularly interested in addressing this argument, here, as I have already addressed it in fic form, but suffice it to say it might or might not show some latent sexism on Iroh’s part that he assumed Azula might like a doll, but it’s not exactly surprising that a man who hasn’t seen his niece for two years, possibly more, wouldn’t be well-versed in her interests, and it’s only very lucky that he hit on something Zuko liked. It’s entirely possible Azula at six loved the dolls she had no interest in at eight.

However, it’s another, much more bizarre assertion I have seen floated around by Azula apologists that I find fascinating, because of how it relates to a troubling historical truth: the idea that Iroh got Azula an Earth Kingdom doll because he wished to demean her by giving her a doll representing a people he viewed as lesser.

Historically speaking children of imperial powers often had dolls representing the peoples their forebears sought to subjugate. These dolls gave the children of an empire symbolic ownership over the people their dolls represented, enculturating them into the project of empire-building and into the entire notion of having power over the people their dolls represented, just as they had power over their dolls. It wasn’t long ago that racist caricatures in doll form such as the gollywog doll [Link] were popular throughout the English-speaking world. Far from demeaning her, sending Azula an Earth Kingdom doll just as her family was on the cusp of conquering the Earth Kingdom very much fits into this pattern. The doll serves the same purpose as sending Zuko a piece of war spoils in the form of a knife.

What these gifts show us, more than anything about Zuko or Azula or their relationship to their uncle, is how Iroh viewed empire. He gave these gifts to his niece and nephew at the height of his imperial ambitions and belief in the rightness of those ambitions, and they show his comfort with empire and a desire to perpetuate it. This will soon change, and Iroh will become the man we know from the show’s timeframe, disgusted by empire, fighting for its demolition and for the freedom of the people he once sought to conquer. But the gifts he chose to give his niece and nephew give a tantalizing glimpse into who Iroh used to be, and what he used to believe in.

Also, I'm not exactly sure why comics keep giving Azula, Iroh and Ursa golden eyes while they had amber gold/ fair brown eyes in the show🤷‍♀️

And yeah! You can see the family resemblance. The eye and eyebrow shapes are remarkably alike

Lol I fuckin' knew people were gonna be like "Azula imagining Zuko without a scar means she really cares and therefore Iroh imagined her cheering during Zuko's agni kai."

No. No. I already addressed this in the other post I made, but it is very realistic for a child in a household where another child is the target of violent abuse to blame that child for "breaking up the family." Azula imagines a reality where Zuko doesn't have a scar and never said anything to get himself banished in the first place. That doesn't mean she didn't still think he deserved to be punished for speaking out against Ozai. It is very telling that the Zuko that appears in Azula's dream resembles more his child self and not his current self, because that highlights how this is not the real Zuko she is imagining, just without the scar, but a Zuko who never did anything to get a scar in the first place. A Zuko who never "deserved it" in her eyes.

I said in that other post that this reality can only exist if Zuko, Iroh, and Ursa never did the things that caused Ozai to treat them cruelly in the first place, and their dialogue reflects that. What the dream shows is that Azula still thinks her father is right and everyone else is to blame for the way things turned out. She wishes they never did those things instead of wishing her father was not an abuser, and that's classic victim blaming.

Also, you have to ignore not just Azula smiling at the agni kai but every other time Azula makes fun of Zuko, laughs about him getting hurt (often when she is the one hurting him) and makes fun of his scar to argue that she really cares about how he was violently abused by a man she still supports.

But the thing is, Azula recieves very typical compliments from a boy that almost any teenage girl would like to hear🤨

So maybe as children, Azula may have had a crush on Lu Ten. It probably was an innocent admiration towards her older and charismatic cousin, I can understand that🤷‍♀️

But if so, imagine the impact of Lu Ten's death that has created on Azula...💀

Like, he is the only DEAD family member that has complimented Azula here. So he probably meant something for her😭

EDIT: I don't think it was the boy from the Beach guys. First of all, if there was going to be someone from Beach, then they'd draw Chan instead since he was Azula's flirt. Why would put some boy that she hasn't even talked to?

Besides, even Sozin and Azulon are here. It wouldn't make sense to not include Lu Ten here. Yeah, you can Azula did not care about him, but then again, he didn't care about Sozin, Azulon, Iroh or even Zuko... Then why keep Lu Ten out of it?

I mean we've never really seen Lu Ten in the series, only a portrait, which is not exactly the clearest picture of him...

So we can't be sure what he looked like exactly. Just because he had a different hairstyle, doesn't mean it can't be him. Peopllocan change their hairstyles. Zuko had like 8 different hairstyles if I counted correctly🤔

In any case, even if it's not Lu Ten but that random boy from The Beach, it'll be super annoying... Not only because they ignored Lu Ten but also because they didn't pay enough attention to Azula.

Like, they're making a solo comics about her and yet, they don't even know the boy she liked?? BS
