Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day - Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Fanfic Recs
I've never made a rec list before, but I wanted to follow @aurora-australis-tumbles's example and put together a short little rec list of my own. Thank you for the inspiration, Aurora! In honor of making the first rec list that appeared on my dash today, I'm starting off my own list with one of your fics.
Friendly Fire by @aurora-australis-tumbles
*starts giggling just thinking about it* This fic is a perfect blend of hurt/comfort and puns after Jack obtains the most hilarious injury. And the Phrack feels in this one are absolutely amazing. 🥰 Seriously. I love this fic so much that I recommended it to my mom. 😂
Speaking of fics I've recommended to my mom (yes, really), I can't make a rec list without including Kneeling at the Altar by @scruggzi, my all-time favorite MFMM fic for personal... kink-related reasons. 😂 My mom doesn't speak English very well and she didn't realize what was going on, or even that the fic was smutty. But I promise it very much is, and it's glorious!
Also by @scruggzi, we have The Catacombs of Rylia, which I am currently reading. It is an MFMM/Doctor Who AU set on the planet Rylia whose inhabitants live in caves underneath the planet's crystalline surface. The world and the writing are absolutely beautiful. I'm a big fan of spa settings, and in this one we have underground spas and an underground ocean perfect for skinny dipping. 😏 Also, everyone's wearing a towel for the entirety of the fic.

Y'all, this is hands down the softest fic I have ever read. We all know I love to leave long comments, but nothing has ever beaten the 800-word comment I left on this 3000-word fic because I just had to squee about every tiniest detail. It is a hurt/comfort fic set in 1950. Jack's had a bad day at work and his old leg injury is acting up. Phryne takes care of him in the gentlest way possible, they share a bath, and there's even a cat. Would highly, hiiighly recommend it <3
No Big Deal by deedeeinfj
An absolutely beautiful modern AU in which Phryne and Jack are college students. Jack has never had sex, and Phryne offers to sleep with him. College-aged Jack is adorable, and he's incredibly gentle with Phryne as she guides him through what she likes. Plus they're both hopelessly in love with one another. 🥰
To end the list with a stealthy self-rec, my favorite fic I have ever written is Say You'll Stay With Me Tonight. Here I tried my hardest to combine all of my favorite (non-smutty) ship tropes into one fic. Phryne and Jack spend a rainy night at Jack's bungalow and Phryne gets her period. It's full of banter and cuddling and I'm extremely proud of it.

Fall. Not that we get much of one, anymore. But I love halloween and when the days are warm and the nights are cool. I love fires and crunchy leaves and all that. Winter is too christmas and spring is too sneezy and summer is apparently living in Satan's buttcrack so...
Comfort foods:
My nana's tacos. My mom's chicken enchiladas. My own chicken paprikash over mashed potatoes. And my bestie's baked mushroom pork chops.

Dogs, apparently. Briard stuff. I have held onto the most important pieces of XF mementos. A couple miss fisher things. I have a decent funko collection but it's packed away.

a fresh made margarita. frozen. with salt.

My mom was a pro dancer so music of all kinds was around all the time. I don't have favorite artists. I don't really like concerts either, but I would pay to see Reba McEntire, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and Dolly Parton (I *have* seen her, tho)

Mac sighed deeply, rubbing at her temple with her fingers as she stared down at the paper in front of her. It was the last one, and she was relieved to finally be finished marking her students’ final exams. The combination of exams as well as her other work had kept her largely away from home for the past week, a pain she felt far more acutely now that she had something – or rather, someone – to come home to.

Mac rolled her eyes but did as Rosie said, returning to her pose despite the soreness beginning to develop in her arms.

Phryne’s elbow was resting on the side of the chair, her arm bent so that she could hold Jack’s hand over her shoulder, tracing absentminded lines over his palm.
A Promise and a Confession - Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (4.6k)
Rosie sighed contentedly as she relaxed into the mattress, closing her eyes and enjoying the sensation of Mac’s fingers tracing light lines over her body, her touch affectionate and loving as she stroked along Rosie’s arm, her side, down over her chest and stomach, circling her hip, then back to her stomach before returning to her arm. The two were in bed but not quite ready for sleep yet, and so they’d been cuddling together quietly for a while. At the moment, Mac was stretched out beside Rosie, their bodies pressed together and her cheek resting on Rosie’s shoulder as her fingers wandered.

A Happy Ending - Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (1.1k)
One of the benefits – and curses – of having been best friends for so many years was that Mac and Phryne knew precisely how to get under each other’s skin when they so chose, and Mac smirked as Phryne huffed in irritation at her. Ignoring Phryne, she tilted her head to allow Rosie better access as she kissed her way up Mac’s throat, her gentle fingers lightly caressing Mac’s thigh. She was curled up comfortably on Mac’s lap, and Mac was quite content to let Rosie demonstrate her affection however she saw fit.

2022/5/18 WIP Wednesday
Wednesday is almost over, and I’m just squeaking by! Thanks for tagging, @kittynomsdeplume, @a11sha11fade, @raflesia65, and @noire-pandora!
I’ve been working on a one-shot to follow Honor and Will after its ending. I know the Trespasser DLC is most people’s favorite, and it is mine also. But there’s something to be said about going on an adventure to an unknown wilderness that is the Frostback Basin. And I do so love descriptive passages... Probably far too much.
So here it is, the beginning paragraphs of the fic entitled Aurora Australis:
On the horizon where the dark sky met the calm waters, a radiant veil shimmered. Slowly, almost methodically, its colors alternated among verdigris, crimson, and magenta. And a veil it was, for it fluttered and quivered as though it were made from the finest, most delicate silk. Its proliferation was complete when it touched and dyed the waters the same hues, pastel and subtle, a decalcomania most luminous.
Before the Inquisition’s foray into the Frostback Basin, Tharin read that the old Tevinters, the ones who were versed well enough in southern matters, used to call it aurora australis. The effulgence bright enough to light up the southernmost night sky like an approaching dawn.
On the edge of the main Inquisition camp some distance away from everyone, Tharin and Cullen quietly watched the aurora. They sat huddled next to their tent, a thick blanket covering their cold bodies. The smell of the packed snow and dirt and the chill of the ground were tempered by Cullen’s embrace. The campfire had been put out, and it was only the sound of the occasional wind that interrupted the nocturnal silence. It was late.

Phryne and Jack surrounded by honeysuckles. 🥰
Man, that part of where honeysuckle grows was such a compelling mental image for me when I was writing it too! I had a whole mini moodboard of ~atmospheric honeysuckle~ pictures to inspire me and everything. Interestingly, the initial inspiration for that fic was a random piece of tumblr art - which I've never been able to find again, rip - of a literal bed of honeysuckle, as in a human bed to sleep in but made of plants and flowers. That's where the idea for Jack being unable to sleep in his human bed and instead retreating to his garden bed came from, anyway, and the rest bloomed (pun intended) around that concept.
It was my first fic in the MFMM fandom, and in many ways it's still my favourite. I'm glad that scene and mental image was as evocative for you as it was for me.

16. This hour I tell things in confidence. (Phryne/Jack, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries)
Jack knew better than to expect anything approaching a conventional relationship with Phryne, in either the physical or emotional aspects, and it was a qualification he accepted. He would never demand to be the only man in her life, or to be in Phryne’s full and total confidence – she had her secrets.
So did he, for that matter. And he trusted Phryne, as (he hoped) she trusted him, not to pry into things he preferred to keep to himself.
But when she chose to open her innermost heart to him… when she felt able to and needed to let down the few barriers she still maintained between them, and speak to him of the things that still haunted her nightmares and made her look over her shoulder…
When she curled up beside him for an hour and told him things in confidence, it gave Jack the greatest pride of his life, as well as a deep and overwhelming rush of humility, to be trusted so much.
And when it was his turn to confide in Phryne, he made sure to tell her so.

Moments like these were rare up north, before the revolution. It was buzzing with people and activity, and Techno’s own preparations had kept him busy from one sunrise to the next.
But here, far, far south, the silence was near constant. The snow that blanketed the landscape quieted nearly all noise that fell upon it, save for the gusts of wind that raced through the trees. It was always cold, bitterly so, but it was worth it for the solitude.
Here, the two of you could sit for hours at a time, uninterrupted. No one to answer to, no schedule to follow. Just you and the miles of open sky, untouched by city lights.
Techno was built for the stark environment, so it’s no surprise that he’s the most comfortable person to sit with, especially out in the snow. Your back pressed against his chest, his cloak covering you, the feeling of dense fur on the back of your head. No amount of cold could touch you, even sitting out here in the dead of night.
“-but Orion was a bit of a cocky bastard, see. Not only did he die to a scorpion of all things, but he was a bit of a creep to King Oenopion’s daughter. Guy didn’t respect women like yours truly.” You giggled, vaguely aware of Techno explaining the stories of the constellations above you. You were drifting further just from the sound of his voice
“Mmm… yeah, didn’t the king blind him for trying to get with her?” You hummed, closing your eyes and settling further into his arms.
Techno barked out a laugh. “Yeah, he did. Not like it mattered in the end though, thanks to the oracle that helped him. Gotta give credit to the scorpion that offed him for that alone.” You felt him shift, running one of his hands through your hair. “Hey, you still with me darlin’? You ain’t gonna sleep through my stories, are ya?”
For some reason, your eyelids refused to open as you murmured back, “No, I’m not, just resting my eyes.” Techno hummed and continued to stroke your hair softly, and that only sealed your sleepy fate.
“Mhm, alright… we should be headin’ back soon anyway.”

“Hey, hey, wake up.”
You groaned, mind hazy with the lingering drowsiness. Techno’s rumbling voice stirred you from your nap, his hand gently shaking your shoulder. You were about to lazily tell him off for waking you when you were so comfortable, until you saw his face was turned skyward. Following his gaze, you were awake almost instantly.
“Oh, wow…” you breathed, taking in the sight above you. Time seemed to stop as different hues of bright green slowly danced across the sky, like neon ribbons suspended in the heavens. The fresh snow in the valley below you reflected the light of the auroras, draping the surrounding area in a soft green glow. You figured you’d see the auroras when you and Techno moved here, but nothing could have prepared you for how stunning they are in person.
Techno leaned down, resting his chin on top of your head. “Wow indeed. I’ve been looking forward to this since we came down here. I’m glad you got to see it.”
Your hand quickly found his, squeezing lightly.
“Me too.”

This one is about Jane struggling to feel at home at Wardlow, and feeling restless and having an almost instinctive desire to leave. It focuses 100% on Phryne and Jane's relationship. Because of her own past, Phryne can relate to Jane's experiences and she helps her feel more comfortable at Wardlow. I'm really in awe of this fic. It's super nuanced and full of feelings!

Phryne helps Jane with her French lessons by introducing her to a scandalous and surprisingly sexual etiquette book. I just reread this one and I'm in love with how Phryne-esque Phryne's parenting style is 🥺🥰 It may be unconventional, but it works and she clearly knows just what Jane needs to feel better.
Friends and Relations by @rain-sleet-snow
Mac wants Jane to have more positive role models in her life and starts tutoring her in science. What starts out as weekly after-school lessons turns into an adorable friendship. The focus is more on Jane's relationship with Mac than with Phryne, but it's still Jane-centric and I would highly recommend it!

In this one we see Jane interacting with almost everyone, but Phryne keeps appearing all throughout the fic. It's about six different expressions of love portrayed through six different interactions between Jane and various members of the Wardlow family and all of the scenes are wonderful 😍
All Wrapped Up in Each Other by @omgimsarahtoo
While not exactly Jane-centric, this fic contains what is probably my all-time favorite exchange between Phryne and Jane so I'm putting it on the list. It's a wonderful mix of family fluff and romantic Phrack moments, including a pre-Christmas weekend getaway where Phryne and Jack manage to stay naked the whole time. We also get a brief hint that Jane might be into girls, which is an idea I have a massive soft spot for myself <3

Without knowing that she is Jack's ex-wife, Jane tells Rosie what Jack means to her 🥺🥰 Jack shows up a short time later. He and Jane eventually return to Wardlow with a ridiculous number of books, and they talk about who they are to one another, which results in the cutest and most heartwarming conversation everrr. Go read iiit as soon as you possibly can!

Please don't be scared away by the fact that this is incomplete. The two chapters currently posted can be read as standalones and they're both wonderful. The premise of the fic is that Jack slowly realizes that he's Jane's dad, and it's told through various slice of life-type of scenes. The two chapters posted are wonderful. I especially loved chapter two, in which Jane gets sick and Jack takes care of her, but both chapters are amazing.

Jack and Jane get trapped in a basement and they use the opportunity for some father-daughter bonding time while they wait for Phryne to rescue them 😂 Jack teaches Jane about Shakespeare, which means the fic is both fluffy and educational!

I'm putting it with the Jack & Jane fics because it involves Jack's Christmas present to Jane, but it's really about the three of them as a family and it is heartwarming and adorable. They're all sleepy and soft and wearing pajamas, and there are hugs and hot cocoa, and by now I've read it more times than I can count 🥰

Another "Jane is queer" fic with Phrack elements set at Christmastime! Jane and her friends are throwing a pre-Christmas party. Jane's invited over one of her friends, whom she has a crush on, so they can get ready together. Because Jane is nervous and she's never done another person's makeup before, she asks Jack if she can practice on him. While the first half consists almost entirely of Jack & Jane bonding time, chapter two is when Phryne comes home and discovers that she rather likes the sight of him in makeup 😇

It is time again for Miss Fisher’s Whumptober!
Calling all MFMM fan artists (writing, drawing, vidding, meta)!
It’s very nearly that magical time of year again - Whumptober! And to celebrate we have a new MFMM Whumptober challenge!
What is Whump you ask? Well basically it is a work in which characters are put into physically and/or mentally painful situations - it’s hurt, and more often than not, comfort. For Whumptober there are a list of prompts from the official Whumptober list, and we’re asking people to claim a prompt and create some new work!*
Our rules are simple:
1) Go to this spreadsheet and claim a prompt (as soon as you’ve used it you’re welcome to claim a second, etc.) **
2) Write/create from it.
3) Post it (whenever you want within the month of October and the first week of November) and tag it “MFMMwhumptober”. If you post on AO3, add it to this collection. Please tag clearly if there is no comfort in the fic, to help your readers, especially right now.
DONE!
(Every prompt has three varations specified under the heading, and you're free to use either of them (or more than one)).
This challenge is open to everyone and anyone - the more the merrier. We warmly welcome newcomers who haven't written for MFMM before - this is a good time to start! And we love a good trope AND a good trope subversion equally, so feel free to take the prompts in whatever direction speaks to you.
