OK;
So I gave the Netflix, avatar the last Airbender a second try. I took off my judgment goggles and looked at it as a brand new work of fiction. Now mind you my opinion means nothing, but I do have a certain level of emotional attachment to this intellectual property.
The live action show is very pretty, I love the costumes and I actually enjoy some of the characters. Keep in mind I’m only 20 minutes into the second episode. I’m a little busy these days. But I plan to make some time. I took down my original post where I called the show trash so that I could collect more data for my opinion.
Some grumbles;
The special effects are kind of wonky in places. I don’t care for Appa‘s hair. 😁
Some of the fight scenes actually have good kung fu in them. Hats off to the choreographer. However the connected CGI animations of the characters performing bending imho lack the basic essences of bending. The Airbender staff fighting had no “bending” at all.
The work we did on the original show came from a certain type of process, and none of those processes seem to exist in this current offering from Netflix…
I think if Bryan and Mike had stuck around on the project you may have seen some differences, but we will never know will we?
I may write more about this after I’ve seen the entire affair. I’m still a little upset about what NF did to cowboy bebop. Both of these shows had a certain “soul“ in the original animations, but that is one more element missing in these current efforts.Heck I know people that worked on NFATLAB that won’t even watch it.
In closing someone brought to my attention that some clown on Reddit called me an asshole.
Meh, I may very well be.

LoK is actually very good. Its only real problem was being a follow-up to AtLAB which was a nostalgic masterpiece.
Not a show could have been positively seen as AtLAB's follow-up, their mistakes were doomed to be pushed uo front
yup, it being a follow up to widely beloved atla was always going to make it a tough sell :(
while we were watching s1 though I was honestly pretty impressed with how they walked the line of transitioning from atla to lok (think how past characters like katara or past concepts like bloodbending, zukos mom in that one line lol, etc are used thats what I mean). it’s so funny bc then in like the last episode they’re like and here’s fanservice character zuko general iroh (ii) ! ^_^ loved that for them
but seriously I think korra s1 does a great job of establishing itself as it’s own new thing even as it acknowledges and uses the past. The ways it builds on things like blood and metalbending are only BECAUSE these things were established and used the way they were in atla. Korra herself is a great example of how they make something interesting specifically in contrast/conversation with the original! She’s built as Aang’s opposite: older, master of all elements BUT air bending, fighter/aggressive, not spiritual. This alone cements lok as a totally new experience with a unique protagonist with her own journey to go on.
ANYWAY admittedly I can now go in knowing they didn’t know if they’d get more seasons but season 1 on its own is very solid imo!!

Do you think Asami would take 4 years to fall in love with someone from afar like Korra? Because that always bugged me.
{ Ohhhhhhhhhhhh you hit my button. You hit it HARD.
Realistically? I don't think anyone can stand pining for someone that long without losing their freaking mind and actually doing something about those feelings and desires.
Bryke can fall back on the whole "this is before phones and computers era" jargon, but I still don't think that's realistic either, unless we're looking at "courtly love" rules done in the middle ages. Because people always found ways to say "I love you/want you."
I also look at Asami's personality and K's personality. Both girls are VERY FORWARD with their emotions, especially with sexual/romantic attraction.
And I get it, both girls were very emotionally vulnerable at the end of book 2 and beginning of 3, but I just don't see either girl waiting that long to admit "yeah I think I love you." That's not a slow burn, that's writers playing around until they decide what they can/want to do with 2 characters and fronting it as "romantic."
Also?? The climate in LOK was very war-like and apocalyptic at times, even if they never said it outloud like they did in AtLAB. No one waits for romance during times of war. They go for it. They may not get to act on it because of distance, but they still confess it. Because you don't know how much time you have left!
Granted, I know some people out there would be too shy or scared to admit romantic love for someone for a long time before confessing, but I HIGHLY DOUBT even those people would hang onto those intense feelings for 4 years without either moving on or acting on it.
You can cite every stupid literary romantic couple you want at me, and I will tell you it's all bullshit. Unless there's like, prison bars separating the two, no dice. If they don't act on their "forever in love from afar" feelings, I don't think they really love that person, they're just a "comfort person" that they keep in mind "just in case." Because even couples that know their love is doomed, still confess feelings, and if anything, they keep their affair secret until they can be "free"...BUT THEY DO IT.
Again, I look at Asami and K's personality. They are both very aggressive when it comes love. They don't hold back.

I’d choose you (bolin x reader)
bolin x fem!reader
1k words mostly fluff and playful banter
summery-Bolin meets reader after winning a pro bending match and the to of you have a heart to heart
I had met Bolin once before in the pro bending circuit. I am the water bender for The red sand rabaroos.I had gone against the fire ferrets in the quarterfinals and unsurprisingly the fire ferrets beat you. It didn't matter-not really my teammates and I did it for fun and the love of the game, while I know it was the brothers on the fire ferrets lively hood.
I still went to see the semifinals but it wasn’t looking good for the fire ferrets so I decided to leave early. Well not really leaving, I wasn't quite ready to leave yet and besides walking home at night as a bender right now doesn't seem all that appealing. So instead I head to the balcony outside the training room just to look at the stars for a while. Leading you to where you were right now “i-i'm sorry i didn't realize anyone was out here” Bolin clutching his shoulder looking especially sad but I imagine it's because they just lost their match but i'm not going to ask, its impolite.
“No its fine I was just out here to look at the sky before I get home but don't worry i’ll go now”
“No no it's totally fine I was just out here to get some air y'know and you were here first so i’ll go” we both just stand there for a moment neither really wanting to leave but not knowing what to do “hey uh Bolin why don't you join me out here for a minute only if you want to though” god why were we both being so awkward?
“Yeah sure umm not to be rude or anything but what's your name and how do you know mine?”
“Well I'm y/n y/l/n and I'm the water bender for the red sand rabaroos and I think most people interested in pro bending know your name” I chuckle awkwardly and gesture for him to sit down on the bench in front of him. He follows my orders and I approach him gently touching his shoulder “can I heal your shoulder if you don't mind I have my healers licence and all that”
“Yeah that would be great actually” after that Bolin and I fell into easy conversation for the entire duration that I was healing him but after I had finished I asked a question that had been on my mind since he came out here
“so how'd the match go?” His eyes light up as he recounts how the fire ferrets won their match him winning the earth bending one on one but I interrupt him towards the end
“wait if you guys won why were you so upset when you walked out here?” he starches the back of his neck while trying to think of a response
“um its kinda a long story besides i'm not really sure I want to tell you” I try to hide my hurt expression though i'm not sure why i felt so hurt by his words after all i'm just a strange girl he just met
“oh yeah that's totally cool and all i’m sor-” “no no no I didn't mean it like that your just a really pretty girl that I just met and I don't want you to think i'm a total doofus and did I mention your really pretty and sweet and dont think im an idiot yet and i'll just shut up now” he finishes talking with a look of defeat on his face.
I can't hold back a laugh any longer he really is so adorable “i'm not laughing at you your just really cute especially with your rambling and I don't mind listening to whatever has you upset no matter how embarrassing, scouts honor”
“Were you even a scout?”
“unimportant but yes a lemur scout for a whole year when I was 5. My point being you can trust me” after he tells me what happens from falling for the avatar to her kissing his older brother it's safe to say i'm shocked I didn't expect that at all.
“um that sucks dude I don't really know what to say i’ve never really had anything like that happen to me ever but it's safe to say she really sucks for doing that to you avatar or not”
I move over to the edge of the balcony looking down at republic city “no its fine you should see my brother he's so much cooler than me and I don't know what I was thinking when I thought she might like me more than him. I’ve never been the first choice to Mako not even when we were younger it was stupid to hope she might actually like me”
Stupid boy. I turn and grab his face forcing him to make eye contact with me as I say “Shes stupid to ruin whatever the two of you had for Mako and besides for what it’s worth I would definatly choose you over Mako any day of the week”
He leans down and our lips brush together, right as he's about to pull back I lean in more fully connecting our lips. Before the kiss can go too far I pull back he's about to say something but I put my finger on his lips silencing him “I think your really cute and sweet Bolin but your really emotional right now, but if your still interested in me tomorrow my training slot is from 12-2 p.m. and after if you want we can go get some food or go to a park or something”
His eyes lighten up with excitement as he exclaims “you mean like a date!”
“yes Bolin I mean like a date” I share a soft smile with him and kiss him one last time on the cheek. Just as I'm leaving I yell “you know where to find me” over my shoulder.Well this has just gotten a lot more interesting
If only I knew just how interesting things were gonna get in the next few months.

ATLAB / LOK and Nickelodeon’s Enforced Gendered Viewership.

With regards to this long ass post. (And I’m gonna slightly deviate from the original topic.)
The really messed up thing with Nick, with concern to Korra. I read somewhere that when they were first doing concept designs for LOK, that the Nick execs railed against a female avatar cause they thought/(wanted to market) Avatar Last Airbender as strictly a Boys show.
When faced with the designs of a really buff, muscular Korra, Nick wasnt overly keen, because they thought her supposed lack of femininity would put boys off
They wanted her to be more feminine (even though Korra was meant to be a more physical Avatar in comparison to Aang.) And Mako would be more front and centre in aiding Korra.
Guess what they found when they market tested the designs?
Girls were absolutely thrilled. And the boys?
The boys couldn’t give two shits about Korra’s supposed lack of femininity. They loved the fact she could punch through shit. They thought Korra’s design was ‘cool’ and ‘badass’!
(my opinion)
So whilst the Nick execs were all patting themselves on the back that their fucked up view and enforced gendering of viewer ship still carried some weight, they obviously didnt think to actually look/take on board the actual content of ATLAB and maybe wonder why exactly it was so immensely popular and who exactly the fandom base was made up of.
ATLAB had some of the strongest, most well rounded female characters on tv at the time. There’s a reason why Azula, Katara and Toph are so popular. Why Suki, Ty Lee and Mai are so beloved.
Not a single one of them is a damsel in distress. Hell, more often than not they handed the boys their ass in a fight.
Azula and Katara are bending masters in their respective element at 14 and Toph, a blind girl, at 11, in a world that it is heavily implied that most bending Adults have not reached that level of skill.
Toph creates her own off shoot of Earth Bending by being the first metal bender.
Azula is seen as an outlier by being able to create and bend lightening, never mind her signature and unique blue flame.
Katara, under duress, masters the rare ability to blood bend, (being second person to do so that we know of in ATLAB) and has such a command of waterbending she can quite literally suck moisture out of the ground creating a barrier that torrential rain cannot penetrate.
Even in the small snippet we get of Avatar Kyoshi, she is ruthless and takes no prisoners. (and one of the main reasons why people have been clamoring for Kyoshi content spawning the books the ‘Rise of Kyoshi’ and the sequel that is following this year, ‘Shadow of Kyoshi’.)
If the Nick execs had cared to take notice of the themes and arcs of some of the characters they might have seen how part of Sokka’s character arc was growing from an ignorant misogynist to a young adult who learned over time and regularly took a hefty gulp of respect women juice.
(A message that the Nick Execs might have benefited from when dealing with LOK.)
Aang, the titular protagonist learns bending from two of his female peers and often defers to their superior skill and knowledge, until he masters them.
Were the Nick execs that dense that they genuinely believed that all these amazing female characters, created by Bryke and colab narratives by Ehasz, were there to appeal only to boys? To represent boys?
The ratio of male to female main heroes/villains is 3 boys, 6 girls and 2 male adults. (one adult we dont even see until the last season.)
The ATLAB fandom was massively made up of girls, and by virtue those girls would more than likely migrate to LOK, specifically because it was a female Avatar hoping for the same depth of character and positive representation, which makes Nick’s whole fucked up enforcing of gendered viewership all the more baffling.
Again, had the Nick Execs not watched ATLAB if they thought they could tout it as ‘just’ another action show and its subsequent spin off LOK?
ATLAB at it’s core is about the interpersonal relationships, the struggles one faces when growing up, dealing with dark themes in a way that kids can understand and older viewers can relate. The war is the back drop, the action part of the draw but not main spectacle.
Had they not done their research, saw the trend of who exactly the audience consisted of and thought, ‘hey maybe its a good idea to maybe stop enforcing, dictating gendered viewership?’ and maybe not continue to labour under the belief that ‘girls dont like action’!
Legend of Korra and ATLAB are still being discussed to this day and not only because it has the industry standard of redemption arcs by which all redemption arcs since have tried to emulate and hold a candle to. (SPOP I’m looking in your direction, congrats btw.) but also because of its representation, strong female characters and compelling villains.
Outside of Korra (/Asami), guess who are the most popular characters?
Kuvira and Lin Beifong.
Now getting back to the actual content of the OG post. There aint alot or ATLAB or LOK merch in general outside of comics and plushies. (There was a poor attempt made at merchandsing on the M Night Shabigamoo’s god awful adaptation..... but shhhhhhhh, we aint even gonna get into that.)
But of the merchandise that is available one in particular stands out as being in high demand.
I typed into google ‘Azula Funko Pop’ and this is the first image!
(Look at that price, it’s insane!)
Now that might be a case of price gouging because she was a US Gamestop exclusive but it in no way detracts from the fact that FUNKO POP is aware of just how popular Azula is therefore by virtue she is a prime candidate for exclusivity and would have collectors clamoring to buy her.
Even Aang in the Avatar state isn’t an exclusive nor is the new Legend of Korra funkos that were meant to be released this June/July ,( which now might be pushed back Covid19 pending).
Now, who exact was Azula created for?
Yes, a foil for Zuko and a way to explore familial dysfunction, a mirror to what Zuko could have been if he hadn't been banished and had the support and guidance of his Uncle Iroh. Her subsequent mental breakdown is heart wrenching and a compelling take on what goes on underneath a villain’s impenetrable armor, that the ravages and victims of war are not just found in the body count.
But for most of the show, Azula is flouncing round the world with her two more than capable and dangerous in their own right, sidekicks, Ty Lee and Mai thrashing the gAang for the most part, kicking ass and taking names whilst also successfully heading a relatively bloodless coup of Ba Sing Se.
How on earth with all that could Nick still be so bull headed as to continue to double down on maintaining it be a show strictly marketed to boys and then get pissed when it when girls flocked to it?
And the comments made in the OG post are correct. Nick showed their displeasure by fucking around with LOK’s time slot on more than one occasion, claimed it’s ratings were dropping (no shit sherlock, wonder why?) before moving it to the web. (where ironically, it thrived.) and then they slashed it’s budget forcing Bryke to trim the animation in places, namely the outfits of the characters, so they could put the money towards the animation of scenes they had been building up to such as Korra’s style of metal bending, which would be more fluid given her OG element was water.
Now imagine the show we might have gotten if Nick hadn’t been a bunch of arseholes, hadn’t tried to enforce their outdated misogynistic views and thrown a massive hissyfit?
Roll on the live action re-imagining with Bryke at the helm. I’m sure Netflix wont be trying to claim or market it as ‘a show strictly for boys’!
