if i see one more "lol aang should've killed ozai" post somewhere i'm gonna mcfreaking lose it, so here we go

Why Aang Killing Ozai is a Garbage Concept and You Have Prestige TV Brainrot

Whenever people bring aang up in conversations of "protagonists who really should have killed their villains" a la batman i feel like they watched a different show than me. the whole point of his arc is that he is someone who is peaceful and avoidant being forced into the role of a decisive fighter.

He is not a warrior, when the execs tried to ask for aang in battle armor to sell as a toy bryke turned it into a bit. he doesn't like to fight, he wants to do diy extreme sports and pet animals. the airbending technique that he invents is the *air scooter* and the first thing he does with it is turn it into a game with the other monks.

He mastered the bending art that's all about indirect attacks and evasiveness and said "actually I think I could figure out a way to hit less". It would be wildly out of character for him to throw his pacifist culture (which is deeply important to him) out the window to enact "justice" for a war he was never actually a part of.

also, to bring it back to batman, the argument is usually "well the joker gets out of prison and kills again" which, fair. but aang finds a non lethal way to neutralize the threat of ozai. iroh says outright, he could kill ozai himself, no problem but that wouldn't fix things. the solution to a century of murder is not "more murder but it's good this time".

aang was even perfectly set up to kill ozai after unlocking the avatar state again. but he snaps himself out of it because he doesn't want a repeat of the north pole (aka the one time he did kill people and was fucking traumatized by the experience??). don't get me wrong, ozai stinks on fucking ice, but there's something incredible about the final conflict being resolved because aang is able to break away from a thousand lifetimes of righteous fury, look at this man who has done horrible things, who is in the middle of trying to wipe out an entire nation like his grandfather wiped out aang's... and give him mercy.

i think that people are too used to the "you've wronged me and now you will die" grimdark revenge plotlines of morally grey protags so they misunderstand what aang's actual strengths are. because he gets told "hey the entire world is literally on your shoulders, everyone you love is dead, people are dying constantly and a lot of them blame you because you didn't fulfill a job you never asked for that has only made your life worse since you got it" and then somehow not only does he do that absolute shit sandwich of a job before he hits puberty, but he manages to do it while still be kind and loving and optimistic.

tldr; if you're complaining that the 13yo sole survivor of a genocide wasn't more excited to kill a man, you're the problem dude

I got an ask about such selfish prayers (who requested that I not answer publicly) that brought me to tears. It reminded me again of -- I've mentioned before that a couple of times when I was working on it, I thought, "am I making this too idealistic? Is this really how it would pan out in real life?" And I decided that now is the time for ideals. All change begins with believing that things can change. And to believe in change, we need to be able to see the world we want to build. So I wrote the world I wanted to see.

This isn't the first person who has told me that my fic changed their life, or gave them strength and hope when they needed it most, and it still overwhelms me that something I wrote has had a real, tangible positive effect on so many people's lives, and has had a ripple effect on the world outside the fandom. Something I started because I was so mad about how the comics and Legend of Korra treated Katara, and then ended up using as a vehicle to address my own fears and anxieties after the 2016 election. It's resonated with so many people for six years now, who have commented on it or recommended it or reached out to me to say how much that Katara means to them. It's deeply humbling and touching. Many of them have brought tears to my eyes.

I didn't realize I would be making such a difference in people's lives just by writing a fanfic, but I'm so happy to have been able to do so. And thank you so much to everyone who has read it, recommended it, commented on it, messaged me about it -- I cherish every one of them. I appreciate so much that so many people have loved this story.

I love you all. And it means so much to me that I've been able to help other people through my writing.

I actually really don't want to hear anything about how 'overcoming misogyny' is a major theme in Avatar: the Last Airbender when "The Fortuneteller" exists and the ultimate thesis of that episode, in the context of the show as a whole, is that if a girl is in unrequited love, it's cringe and kinda pathetic and she should move on cause the boy will never want her; but if a boy is in unrequited love, he just needs to be patient and wait for the girl he wants to come around cause he's a hero and how could she not?

Its secondary thesis is that you need to make your own destiny and not rely on someone else's words to tell you what your life has in store...if you're a BOY; if you're a girl then what the fake psychic told you will actually determine your ENTIRE life even if you are only fourteen years old.

Meng's existence really would have been the final nail in the coffin for Kataang even if the arc of the ship in Book 3 weren't so abhorrent to me personally (sorry but I have higher standards for romantic relationships than 'the girl is completely oblivious to the boy's advances for the entire show, is actively distressed when those advances become more pronounced, and then her feelings are resolved completely off screen between episodes so that the boy can get his prize in the end')--because her relationship with Aang is deliberately paralleled to Aang's relationship with Katara, and yet Meng, the one-off character, learns a lesson which Aang is quite literally told he must learn in the Book 2 finale... but he never ever does.

Aang has an entire season to internalize that lesson and come to terms with it--that maybe she doesn't have feelings for me and that's ok because I still love and care about her and that's enough--but he never even comes close. His possessive attachment to her gets worse, culminates in the EIP kiss, and Katara just capitulates because we're meant to believe that she went through the entire development of her romantic feelings for the love of her life off-screen between the penultimate episode and the four-part finale.

This was misogynistic even in 2008, and the idea that the show truly had anything meaningful to say about sexism/misogyny when uncritical and unchecked misogyny was baked into its very DNA (assuming we're meant to agree with Brychael that Kataang is 'in the DNA of the show) is just laughable to me. When it comes to 'overcoming misogyny' the show doesn't actually say anything more profound than 'girls can fight too!!!!!'

And that wasn't good enough for me then, it certainly isn't good enough for me today.

If you like her because she’s cool and a good written character. Than your a usual Azula fan which is good, BUT-

Making her have a incestous relationship with her BROTHER or FATHER and than make really weird ships that don’t make sense, than leave and never return to this fandom, you have disgraced the Avatar fandom and our teachings!

Also to the weird piece of dogshit who made a post about Zuko raping Azula and than trying to defend their actions when I called them out: incest and rape isn’t normal and I genuinely hope you get therapy or some sort of help.
