me, gearing up to explain why the dragon prince's latest seasons have continued to disappoint me, that while i love the lore and worldbuilding and characters there are clear pacing issues that are so jarring it takes me out of the experience, and that i say all of this with great love for the series but there's only so much good concepts can do before animation has to catch up in order to retain the average viewer's attention. that although season 4 and 5 have been branded as "the mystery of aaravos" the titular character barely appears and that is a crime to me, that even if it's for the suspense and intentionally leaving the viewer/main characters in the dark it's not doing a good job at building up his character and i fear for the exposition dump that will inevitably happen later on. that i will be harsh in critiquing this series because i love it so much and want it to be the best it can be: *inhales*

also me the moment i actually finished the goddamn season:

I’ve seen this concept in a few fanfictions, and I too like to headcanon that touching an elf’s horns is an incredibly intimate gesture that only really happens between immediate family members or romantic partners. Their horns are especially sensitive around the base where the nerve endings cluster, and most elves won’t touch another’s horns even in a fight because of how violating it is.

Cue Callum innocently asking if he can touch Rayla’s horns (purely out of curiosity, he’s always wondered what they feel like), and she is immediately a blushing disaster. He finds out later and is simply mortified.

Punishment VS Acceptance: The Silvergrove and Callum

5x01, 5x04, and 5x08 were probably my favourite episodes for Rayla and Callum’s dynamic this season, for obvious reasons, and rewatching the bulk of the season next day after (and for a nice meta segue) I wanted to tackle the downright beautiful parallels between 3x03 and 5x01 (and a little bit of 4x03).

So let’s get into it.

As we all know, Rayla returns home in 3x03, and gets a... more brutal welcoming than she was expecting, partially due to her own perceived crimes, and due to the Silvergrove’s associative prejudices/inclinations.

It is extremely important to note that (at this time at least) Rayla is banished for something she didn’t even do: “But you didn’t run away from anything. They just don’t know what happened.” And although initially dejected, she remains hopeful and ‘confident’ that Ethari wouldn’t have done the spell.

Ethari, however, temporarily chooses his grief and village over his daughter, and shuts her out... in a way, framing wise, that’s not too dissimilar from Callum’s initial cold reaction in 4x01.

Which makes sense, as both Ethari (and later Amaya) state is quite similar:

Then, of course, while pursuing the exact opposite of abandoning her family, and trying to figure out what happened to them, Rayla is caught emerging from Viren’s old sealed off chambers in 5x01 and accordingly arrested. What I found particularly interesting is that in spite of being fully able to, Rayla doesn’t actually say a single word during her pseudo trial, Callum and Opeli doing all the talking for her (on both ends).

She knew stealing the key wasn’t the right thing to do, but felt unable (or unwilling) to share the burden of the coins with Callum, probably because she hasn’t been able to rely on anyone in a long time (two years alone did not help) and that it’s always been something she’s struggled with. Runaan and Callum’s complicated personal history likely didn’t help either.

And just like the Silvergrove, Opeli is arresting her on the basis of association:

and unlike the Silvergrove, on account of crimes she actually committed.

And I think there’s a lot of reasons Rayla doesn’t speak up in this scene - shame, the way she’s never been particularly good at advocating for herself, the general emotional difficulties present - but I think the main reason is that she left Callum an explanation in Through The Moon about why she left and he was still (understandably) angry with her, but more than that is that the Silvergrove flat out did not care about her intentions, and she knows it.

E: I told Runaan you were too good hearted for the work of an assassin, so I know you did not betray them out of malice.

Why would this time be any different, especially when as stated, she’s done all the things she’s being accused of?

But Callum isn’t the Silvergrove, so of course he’s different.

Where they stripped her of her home and literal identity, labelling her a Ghost, he reaffirms that her name - “She’s not ‘the elf’ - she’s Rayla” and that he knows exactly who she is. Where the Silvergrove robbed her of a chance to explain herself...

Callum says that she doesn’t need to even when it’s being demanded of her. Whereas before her intentions didn’t matter, they’re all that count here, enough that he is willing to disregard literally everything else (including his own complicated feelings about said murder bow).

C: I know this. [To love is simply to know this:] The tides are true as the ocean is deep. O: What does that mean, Prince Callum? C: It means I trust her. Unconditionally. Let her go. Now.

He doesn’t know ‘what happened’ as far as her intentions and motivations, only the worst presentation of her behaviour. But he refuses to punish her for doing something alone, for not asking for help, for keeping a secret. Instead he’s warm and compassionate and vouches for her, and if anything takes a certain amount of self-imposed responsibility on his own shoulders of realizing that if Rayla didn’t feel like she could come to him with something, he needs to be doing something different.

All while also reaffirming his faith in her - that it’s nothing that would hurt him, that she wants to tell him, that she will tell him one day, that she will be ready, and that he hopes she knows she can trust him.

Because he loves her.

What’s amazing about Callum and Rayla, is that she was his the night they met, girl was ride or die for him the moment she decided not to kill him, fell in love with him the second he turned around and looked at her, the moment he threw the curtain over her head, while she chased him around the castle, when he said excitedly “Hey! You swept the leg!?”, she was all his before they even teamed up, before she even knew his name, before they even left castle grounds she was ready to fight her own for him and his father who she had never met “say the word and I’ll go back into that tower with you”, Rayla was in love when she said “Hey sad prince” and caved to his request, Rayla was in love when she mocked his excellent drawing of the game room, Rayla was in love when he eased her mind on the boat trip, and while they argued about the egg, and when she showed him her fears and told him about what she saw in the caldera, Rayla was in love with Callum instantly, Rayla fell first

but Callum, oh god Callum

the slow growth of his devotion is overwhelming, because we know he likes her right away, he thinks she’s brave, tries to make her feel better, but then he decides to trust her, and calls her his friend, and he brags about how amazing she is in the letter he writes his dad, and then he actively leaves behind his former crush who he knew his whole life and chooses to trust Rayla over her even though they just met and continue their journey together, and then he smiles when she’s teasing and yelling worriedly at him in the rain, and when she hugs him he melts a little, and as he draws her while he feels helpless and is worried for her safety something starts shifting into place, and he risks himself by doing something horrible that he never thought he would do, he uses dark magic; to protect her, and when he wakes up in her arms, he’s smitten, and when they cross into xadia together and she talks him up to the dragon in their way, his eyes grow big and soft, and he’s falling, and when he stares at her a little too long while needlessly adjusting his scarf around her neck, you can actually feel his heart beating, and as they fall through the tress and he holds onto her tight he is so nervous because it’s the first time they’ve really been this close and alone, and it’s the first time he’s had fun with a friend like this

Callum knows it’s love by the time they dance together, He knows it’s love when he tries to get her to open up about losing her home, he knows it’s love when Nyx assumes they’re a couple and they both get frazzled, he knows it’s love when he’s telling her how amazing she is, and when she kisses him, he knows it’s love when he accidentally says the wrong thing and makes her think it’s not mutual and face palms because he really wanted the moment to happen he just wasn’t prepared for it when it did, he knows it’s love while he’s watching her defy gravity and go after Nyx and save the day, and long before he tells her yet again how incredible she is and they become official

Rayla may have fell first and at full speed

But Callum, Oh Callum

Callum fell so much harder

I have a theory (or three) on the Secret to the Star Arcanum

So first off, I am an utter SLUT for Startouch lore. Obviously, look at the handle. But like, I'm currently in the works of a fic for a Startouch-descended character and even creating constellations and stories for them in the TDP world. Like, I'm down bad for them as I am for Rayllum (and trust that I'm down BAD).

The thought for the star arcanum's secret was, of course, a shower thought that I think really works:

Eternity is ever-changing, and that change is the only constant in this or any world.

I think about how the stars move constantly throughout the year and how the Startouch elves are essentially immortal gods looking down on mortals from the starry night sky. I think about how our favorite characters grow and change throughout the duration of TDP as a whole and how the world of TDP changes from the beginning of Book One to the end of Book Five thus far.

Everyone and everything is constantly changing and shifting, no matter how bad we wish it wouldn't or wish to go back to how life was before. Sure, you could say this kinda ties more with the ocean arcanum with how there are depths you just don't know and things you can't control - something that comes as a byproduct of constant change - but when you think about how the stars move throughout the year as the world turns round and the immortality of the Startouch elves that are still very much a mystery to us - and I feel especially with the show progressing, seeing our favorite characters grow and change along with the world they live in - it makes a lot of sense that that could be the secret to the stars - as well as a nice poetic way to wrap up the show or something.

Edit: However, upon actually looking at the wiki (because I tend to get ahead of myself lol) and further reflection, it could very well be tied into the recurring theme of destiny.

I look at what the stars are associated with according to the fandomwiki: vision, truth, intelligence, otherworldly, reality-altering, timelessness, mystery, destiny, and wishes. And I think about the constant recurring theme in Callum's arc about destiny

So perhaps the star arcanum can answer the question on destiny? Just a thought.

ALTHOUGH, I am also entertaining one final, possible secret: that there is none. It simply just is.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, I know, but the wiki also states that many have tried and agonized over the secret of the stars and could not find the words to truly describe it. And when you look once more at the associations to the stars - vision, truth, intelligence, otherworldly, reality-altering, timelessness, mystery, destiny, and wishes - it wouldn't be totally crazy for the secret the all-knowing First Elves were born with knowing is that there simply isn't a secret. That all that exists simply exists in the time and space in which it exists.

And I'm kinda leaning towards this theory now that I read it out loud.
