Horror: Huge, scary, has an unblinking red eye light that’s bulging in his socket, grotesque crack in his skull, often smiles wide when he’s stressed and anxious (uncontrollable) which makes fairies more frightened of him.
Also Horror: Loves cute and pretty things, speaks in a gentle but deep tone, is aware of his strength, and will cradle anything smaller than him with the utmost care, weak for kisses of any kind.
Dust: Petite, soft, a very pretty fairy of few words, loves to snuggle with his gentle giant, clingy, often stares unblinkingly but his eye lights are very beautiful so other fairies don’t mind it too much; a typical, lovely summer fairy.
Also Dust: Homicidal, murderously protective of his loved ones, has uncontrollable magic that makes him far stronger than he looks, has a way of making his petite appearance terrifying once he’s hunting you, enjoys causing dread in other fairies, will intentionally say things that scare others so they back off.

the fact that an ace artist who has mentioned on multiple occasions she doesn't entirely get romance in fiction (at least in a lot of largely cliched forms) appears to be unable to create a single unfuckable character seems like some kind of largely benign but greatly entertaining curse. even the evil slime can't be an exception somehow. is this some kind of chaotic monkey's paw thing you did in exchange for drawing skills?
on the day of my birth my parents neglected to invite the wicked fairy of the forest, so she inflicted upon me a cruel curse such that I will forever craft art and stories laden with pleasures that I myself can never enjoy, and then a separate and unrelated wicked fairy smote me with the curse of Can't Stop Drawing Meme Formats

"Oh, fuck no." The door is slammed, unfortunately for him, the guy stuck his foot in the jamb and pushed it open again.
"C'mon luv!" Constantine smiles charmingly, not waiting for Danny and entering the apartment.
At least Batman, Nightwing and Spoiler had the patience to wait for him to invite them in. Sagging against the door, he beckoned them inside.
Despite the caution, Spoiler gleefully stepped in, looking around like a child in an amusement park— which might not be too far off.
His apartment is, with all its wards and enchantments, very magical inside than it is outside.
The planetary system of another world, used as light for the living room and for practice.
(Nightwing is careful with what he touches. He still remembers the hours they spent in Mumbo Jumbo's hat.)
Batman on the other hand is following Constantine and Danny to what he assumes to be the office, if the amount of magical stuff carelessly laying around means anything.
"Alright fucker, what are you doing here? And how did you even know I live in gotham?"
John had the audacity to look abashed, scratching the back of his head with a nervous chuckle.
"Something came up and you know Gotham doesn't like me. She is much more used to you and I wanted to introduce bats to you, in case of emergency."
The young adolence stares owlishly.
(How did Constantine expect him to act at the fact that he's trusting a magical situation into the hands of a stranger?
Batman isn't sure how good the boy even is!)
"That's incredible thoughtful of you Connie." Danny hums. "What did you lose for your sorry ass to come here?"
Spoiler snorts, petting a red salamander. "He didn't lose anything." She reassures with a wave, giving an exaggerated smile and raising her brows to show that she's finding it very amusing.
Constantine sputters.
"Ancient knows how Zatanna and Raven deal with him."
Nighteing perks up from the side where he'd looked over the books, some pixie fairies(?) fawning over him? "Raven? You know her?"
Danny suppresses another sigh.

I'm so tired of people saying that the Prince from Snow White is a creep for kissing Snow White when he thought she was dead.
People act as if he put his tongue down her throat while she looks like a regular corpse.
Maybe I'm just more comfortable with death because of my upbringing.
There's a European tradition that you would kiss dead people goodbye. You would also wait with a dying person because dying alone was one of the most horrible ways to die.
In Poland, you would spend three days with the dead body of your relative in the house so family and friends have time to say goodbyes. We even have pictures of family members in coffins, so we could remember them.
Yeah, it's a very post-modern, historically, culturally-small-minded way to look at it.
Specifically in this movie (which is a fairy tale's fairy tale) people just...totally ignore the scene where The Prince is introduced.
Seriously and truthfully, BECAUSE the Prince only takes action in three scenes of the movie, you HAVE to take all three of them very very seriously. Because thats all there is to know about him. That's how fairy tales work: lots of information hiding under very brief, simple snippets of information. It's called nuance.
Anyway.
The Prince kisses Snow White as a culmination of their promised love for each other.
Tumblr media
First scene he's in, he falls in love with her because of her obvious purity and he overhears her longing for someone to love her. Then she runs away because she's not sure of him, and doesn't know him. But he sings his part of the song, which is all about how he has just one heart to give, one devotion to spend, and he's choosing to give it and spend it on her if she'll have him.
Tumblr media
And she will have him. How do we know? She sends a kiss to him on the dove. That's how the exchange ends; that's how she responds, and that's why he leaves satisfied. It's their engagement scene. They're promising their hearts to each other.
Tumblr media
Fast-forward, the Queen messes up what might have been the natural follow-through of that engagement which is marriage by trying to kill Snow White, she's living in the woods, but she won't forget the Prince and wholeheartedly believes he'll come find her.
Tumblr media
And the very next thing we hear about him is that he keeps his promise. He's got one heart, one love, one devotion, and it's promised to Snow White, and he will not stop searching for her. When he finds her, he's returning her kiss from their engagement scene. He thinks she's dead, but he has to finish his quest anyway. This is him, trying to keep his promise even if she's dead; he's trying to fulfill the exchange they had when they saw each other last.
Tumblr media
It's ridiculous to assume that she needed to be awake and alive to give permission for him to kiss her; it's ignorant of the whole relationship, symbolic and literal, between these two fairy tale characters. She already sent him her kiss and her heart; he already promised to claim it; he's fulfilling the promise in that scene.
Tumblr media
Crazy postmodern people, don't know how to take in a story. Not everything gets to have your socio-cultural lens imposed upon it.

Sri Lankan Fairies and Senegalese Goddesses: Mixing Mythology as a Mixed Creator
[Note: this archive ask was submitted before the Masterpost rules took effect in 2023. The ask has been abridged for clarity.]
@reydjarinkenobi asked:
Hi, I’m half Sri Lankan/half white Australian, second gen immigrant though my mum moved when she was a kid. My main character for my story is a mixed demigod/fae. [...] Her bio mum is essentially a Scottish/Sri Lankan fairy and her other bio mum (goddess) is a goddess of my own creation, Nettamaar, who’s name is derived from [...] Wolof words [...]. The community of mages that she presided over is from the South Eastern region of Senegal [...] In the beginning years of European imperialism, the goddess basically protected them through magic and by blessing a set of triplets effectively cutting them off from the outside world for a few centuries [...] I was unable to find a goddess that fit the story I wanted to tell [...] and also couldn’t find much information on the internet for local gods, which is why I have created my own. I know that the gods in Hinduism do sort of fit into [the story] but my Sri Lankan side is Christian and I don’t feel comfortable representing the Hindu gods in the way that I will be this goddess [...]. I wanted to know if any aspect of the community’s history is problematic as well as if I should continue looking further to try and find an African deity that matched my narrative needs? I was also worried that having a mixed main character who’s specifically half black would present problems as I can’t truly understand the black experience. I plan on getting mixed and black sensitivity readers once I finish my drafts [...] I do take jabs at white supremacy and imperialism and I I am planning to reflect my feelings of growing up not immersed in your own culture and feeling overwhelmed with what you don’t know when you get older [...]. I’m sorry for the long ask but I don’t really have anyone to talk to about writing and I’m quite worried about my story coming across as insensitive or problematic because of cultural history that I am not educated enough in.
Reconciliation Requires Research
First off: how close is this world’s history to our own, omitting the magic? If you’re aiming for it to be essentially parallel, I would keep in mind that Senegal was affected by the spread of Islam before the Europeans arrived, and most people there are Muslim, albeit with Wolof and other influences.
About your Scottish/Sri Lankan fairy character: I’ll point you to this previous post on Magical humanoid worldbuilding, Desi fairies as well as this previous post on Characterization for South Asian-coded characters for some of our commentary on South Asian ‘fae’. Since she is also Scottish, the concept can tie back to the Celtic ideas of the fae.
However, reconciliation of both sides of her background can be tricky. Do you plan on including specific Sri Lankan mythos into her heritage? I would tread carefully with it, if you plan to do so. Not every polytheistic culture will have similar analogues that you can pull from.
To put it plainly, if you’re worried about not knowing enough of the cultural histories, seek out people who have those backgrounds and talk to them about it. Do your research thoroughly: find resources that come from those cultures and read carefully about the mythos that you plan to incorporate. Look for specificity when you reach out to sensitivity readers and try to find sources that go beyond a surface-level analysis of the cultures you’re looking to portray.
~ Abhaya
I see you are drawing on Gaelic lore for your storytelling. Abhaya has given you good links to discussions we’ve had at WWC and the potential blindspots in assuming, relative to monotheistic religions like Christianity, that all polytheistic and pluralistic lore is similar to Gaelic folklore. Fae are one kind of folklore. There are many others. Consider:
Is it compatible? Are Fae compatible with the Senegalese folklore you are utilizing?
Is it specific? What ethnic/religious groups in Senegal are you drawing from?
Is it suitable? Are there more appropriate cultures for the type of lore you wish to create?
Remember, Senegalese is a national designation, not an ethnic one, and certainly not a designation that will inform you with respect to religious traditions. But more importantly:
...Research Requires Reconciliation
My question is why choose Senegal when your own heritage offers so much room for exploration? This isn’t to say I believe a half Sri-Lankan person shouldn’t utilize Senegalese folklore in their coding or vice-versa, but, to put it bluntly, you don’t seem very comfortable with your heritage. Religions can change, but not everything cultural changes when this happens. I think your relationship with your mother’s side’s culture offers valuable insight to how to tackle the above, and I’ll explain why.
I myself am biracial and bicultural, and I had to know a lot about my own background before I was confident using other cultures in my writing. I had to understand my own identity—what elements from my background I wished to prioritize and what I wished to jettison. Only then was I able to think about how my work would resonate with a person from the relevant background, what to be mindful of, and where my blindspots would interfere.
I echo Abhaya’s recommendation for much, much more research, but also include my own personal recommendation for greater self-exploration. I strongly believe the better one knows oneself, the better they can create. It is presumptuous for me to assume, but your ask’s phrasing, the outlined plot and its themes all convey a lack of confidence in your mixed identity that may interfere with confidence when researching and world-building. I’m not saying give up on this story, but if anxiety on respectful representation is a large barrier for you at the moment, this story may be a good candidate for a personal project to keep to yourself until you feel more ready.
(See similar asker concerns here: Running Commentary: What is “ok to do” in Mixed-Culture Supernatural Fiction, here: Representing Biracial Black South American Experiences and here: Am I fetishizing my Japanese character?)

Start More Freely with Easy Mode
Question: Why not make a complete high-fantasy universe, with no need of establishing clear real-world parallels in the text? It gives you plenty of leg room to incorporate pluralistic, multicultural mythos + folklore into the same story without excessive sweating about historically accurate worldbuilding.
It's not a *foolproof* method; even subtly coded multicultural fantasy societies like Avatar or the Grishaverse exhibit certain harmful tropes. I also don't know if you are aiming for low vs high fantasy, or the degree of your reliance on real world culture / religion / identity cues.
But don't you think it's far easier for this fantasy project to not have the additional burden of historical accuracy in the worldbuilding? Not only because I agree with Mod Marika that perhaps you seem hesitant about the identity aspect, but because your WIP idea can include themes of othering and cultural belonging (and yes, even jabs at supremacist institutions) in an original fantasy universe too. I don't think I would mind if I saw a couple of cultural markers of a Mughal Era India-inspired society without getting a full rundown of their agricultural practices, social conventions and tax systems, lol.
Mod Abhaya has provided a few good resources about what *not* to do when drawing heavily from cultural coding. With that at hand, I don't think your project should be a problem if you simply make it an alternate universe like Etheria (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), Inys (The Priory of the Orange Tree) or Earthsea (the Earthsea series, Ursula K. Le Guin). Mind you, we can trace the analogues to each universe, but there is a lot of freedom to maneuver as you wish when incorporating identities in original fantasy. And of course, multiple sensitivity readers are a must! Wishing you the best for the project.
- Mod Mimi

can i ask for more uh kross interaction? or fun facts? like what do they do together? does cross ever like get cuddly, the only way cross can, and just hold onto killer?
“Killer, I swear—”
“Hah! Then you must swear a lot, Crossy,” Killer sang as he continued to dance circles around the black-and-white hybrid, shuddering from the cold but having far too much fun to feel bothered by it. The winter winds might be on Cross’ side when it came to warning him about the oncoming freezing night, but he just couldn’t help the way he loved the sight of Cross outside in the light of the setting sun. That white-yellow light just made Cross’ wings shimmer so beautifully, and the faint colour of purple sparkled brilliantly as he moved, like gemstones.
Killer loves to tease Cross and it drives the black-and-white fairy mad with annoyance! Rarely will he have peace and—and—and oh… The sweet kisses Cross receives when he finally catches Killer is the loveliest reward in the world.
Cross yearns for companionship and is secretly very clingy. Killer yearns for attention and is openly clingy. Cross + Killer = Profit.
Even though Killer takes clear pleasure in driving Cross up the wall with his shenanigans and mischiefs, he loves it even more when he has Cross so flushed and so smitten that his wings flutter on their own from the overabundance of emotions he’s experiencing.
Cross can easily be persuaded to not rise early in the morning from having his usually feisty mate nuzzle up to his chest and purr in blissful slumber.
“You know you purr in your sleep,” Cross said, smiling fondly as he cradled Killer’s cheek, enjoying the sight of his sockets seeming bleary despite the lack of light within them.
“I don’t purr in my sleep,” Killer objected, yawned as his wings quivered when he stretched, and immediately slumped back down onto Cross’ chest. “Maybe you just heard me kiss your bosom in my sleep,” he teased but immediately faltered into a light blush as he looked up at Cross’ face, seeing only a tender smile filled with fondness and affection. It made Killer’s exposed soul flutter.
Cross would hold onto Killer and never let go if he could, but Killer gets restless after a while and Cross cannot forgo his duties, so it is with great shame that he must release his little mate.
“I am not little, you’re just freakishly tall.”
“Oh…”
“Psh, not in a bad way, you big softy. You know I love the way you tower over me when you get all protective and possessive; hmm? Criss-Cross,” Killer sang.
Cross blushed.
Killer got to see firsthand how strong and intimidating Cross can be when engaged in battle or when protecting those he loves, and by the stars, he felt a primal need to just immediately take him back to the nest and have a faerling with him. He immediately choked at his thoughts and blamed his spring fairy tendencies for that.
Cross pretends to not notice how much Killer stares when he’s training, but he knows; he knows all too well and he’s purposefully showing off.
Killer is insufferable when it comes to bragging about how he caught Cross before anyone else could. After all, what fairy wouldn’t want a Warrior/Knight fairy for a mate? There is hardly any better for making strong and healthy faerlings!
“I would love to have a faerling with you one day, Killer.”
“Ach! W- wh—hehehe, what is this about, Crossy?” Killer choked, laughing nervously even as he blinked in shock as Cross’ hand came to trail the edges of his soul, touches so light it almost tickled.
“You don’t have to answer me yet, I just want you to know that… That I’d really love to have a faerling with you. I could even be the one to carry it if you’d like.”
Being rendered speechless for the first time in ages, Killer found himself unable to answer for a moment. It wasn’t that he didn’t want a faerling… He just didn’t think anyone would ever want one with him, being a hybrid and all. But then… maybe Cross had that same thought hidden within that thick skull of his, though unwilling to reveal such insecurity in this tender moment where he just wanted to show Killer how much he wanted to bond with him.
… A faerling.
“Heh…”
Cross lifted his gaze to meet with Killer’s.
“Maybe I’d like that… one day,” Killer said, and the smile that broke over Cross’ beautiful face made Killer’s façade slip as his brows furrowed and his lips quivered with emotions. He couldn’t help but smile, too.

Do you believe in fairies?
No one could deny that all the Robins had a unique and lively spirit, they began their career with stars in their eyes and feet in the air. Or at least most of them, Damian was still a work in progress.
Due to how the League of Assassins had raised him, it was a bit difficult to communicate with him. And most of the experiences or dreams that kids his age had were just not available. Dick had done everything to show him the "magic" but nothing was working. Not even his weekly Disney movie marathon.
That's why Dick decided to be a little more...literal about it. He asked Constantine and Zatanna for help in contacting a fairy (Zatanna looked at him as if he was crazy), this was because the last movie Damian had shown interest in was "Peter Pan". Or at least it was until Tinkerbell showed up and Damian declared that "he didn't believe in fairies."
Unfortunately for Constantine, he owed the former Robin a favor, so he tried to summon a Fairy. Of course, since the universe is engaged in making his life miserable, something went wrong. And instead of a Fairy, a ghost was looking around in confusion.
Danny didn't know where he got to, or why the boy in front of him asked him if he was "a fairy", but he decided to play along and quickly form crystal wings out of his ice. The halfa was quite amused by the situation, while Constantine looked doubtfully at the supposed "fairy" who didn't look like a fairy at all.
Danny smiled happily as he sat in the circle, he could leave at any time (and he hated being summoned) but the situation seemed extremely interesting.
