okay, fuck it. let's talk about remorse. more specifically, the lack of it
there was a post going around a while ago that claimed that izaya couldn't possibly have aspd, because he feels remorse, and its simply so subtle that it's hard to pick up on, and he simply hides it to maintain his image. given that this post is a jab at me and my work, i feel no guilt nor will feel remorse over jabbing right back.
(especially since, if you pay attention to the wording of the post and OP themselves, it's clear that they had a... certain other neurodiverse headcanon for izaya, and was for some reason mad at me for having a different one)
(but i digress)
let's talk remorse.
first of all, the "lack of remorse" criterion isn't, as some might be tempted to think, the most important "hallmark" symptom of aspd. let's break down how disorders are diagnosed!
in the DSM, disorder symptoms are classed into criteria. these criteria are sometimes grouped together. here's the criteria list for ASPD in the dsm-5-tr, the most current version;
under group A, we have the standard "this is what the disorder is like, and these are the symptoms of it. you need X amount to have this disorder." the criteria listed in groups B, C, and D are on their own because they are required for diagnosis. if the lack of remorse criterion was truly SO important that it was the hallmark of the disorder, the one symptom that sets it apart from all cluster B disorders, then it would be in its own group like those 3 criterion! but it's not, because while it's the symptom most people associate with aspd, it's not the hallmark of the disorder, nor is it explicitly required for diagnosis.
in fact, the main Thing about aspd is, uh, right there actually- a pervasive pattern of disregard for the rights of others. in layman's terms, aspd is categorized by a consistent behavior pattern of treating other peoples' boundaries, wants, needs, and human rights, as trivial. this overall behavior pattern is then identified by specific actions or feelings the patient has- hence the criteria.
i could end this post here, honestly- who cares if izaya does or doesn't feel remorse? it's not needed for diagnosis, and it's izaya's whole thing to violate the rights of others- he consistently treats people as his playthings, wether or not they want him to (usually not!) he disregards others' feelings (the suicidal girls come to mind wrt this) and is incredibly reckless with both his life and the lives of others. it's kind of a done deal!
but i won't because i have more to say!
so. izaya. remorse. he feels it, but keeps it hidden. he represses it. and honestly, he always has some justification or another for whatevet it is he's doing. his targets had it coming because they're monsters. or stupid and cowardly. or had it coming. or it doesn't matter because he's a god amongst men. BUT- he does feel remorse! ASPD cured!!!!!!!!!!!!
guys i hate to tell you this, but i've felt remorse before. sparingly, but i have. i am a Person With ASPD from Real Life, i've been diagnosed professionally and even had multiple second opinions check and re-check, to the point that it became a running gag. i, without a shadow of a doubt, have antisocial personality disorder. And I Have Felt Remorse.
(my verdict is it sucks and is terrible and i have no idea how you people do it. yall need like, medals or something)
because, as you might have noticed... a lack of feeling remorse isn't actually the only thing listed. now, a lot of websites don't actually list the second half of the criterion, they just say "lack of remorse" with no elaboration. it's hard to find a website with the proper informatiom on it, especially if you haven't read the dsm to see the full criteria list, so you don't know what you're looking for. truly, i don't blame laypeople for not knowing this- it's not easy to find short of going to the source itself
but if you're writing long posts filled with "facts" about a disorder that you do not have, you better make damn sure your facts are right lest you spread misinformation.
(hell, i HAVE the damn thing and i make sure i'm as accurate as possible, because i acknowledge that Having The Disorder isn't a ticket to immidiate expertise. but imo it's especially egrigious when you don't have it)
but, the criterion itself is defined as "being indifferent to or rationalizing" harmful actions. Or Rationalizing. you can feel remorse as much as you want, but if you stomp it down with justifications about how you were right, it still counts!
and finally, the name of the game with diagnosis of any disorder is consistency. if someone can make their abuser cry because of them and feel no remorse, that's not aspd. that's just a special case. if someone can make anybody cry because of them and feel no remorse, that's aspd.
similarly, if someone can make most people cry because of them and feel no remorse, with one- or maybe two- exceptions, that's... still aspd. because the behavior expressed most consistently is a lack of remorse. one or two exceptions to the rule don't suddenly make you not have aspd, especially if you have multiple other symptoms. (in fact, in some aspd circles people do talk about having "exceptions," kind of like the aspd version of a pwBPD's favorite person. pwaspd feeling remorse or otherwise not meeting criteria in incredibly specific circumstances is in fact a documented phenominon. once again, this happened to me and i've been diagnosed multiple times over. were all those doctors wrong, or does aspd just not work like you thought it did?)
izaya consistently represses most of his more vunerable feelings. that's another one of his main things. if remorse is included in this, which it would be given the pattern, then izaya most consistently does not feel (or otherwise accept) remorse. a few slips of the mask here and there, where he can't stomp it down or ignore it, don't change that the most consistent behavior from him is a lack of remorse. in fact, him feeling remorse here and there makes the portrayal of aspd more realistic, imo-
people with aspd are still people at the end of the day, and aspd is just another mental illness. people are varied, mental illnesses present differently in everyone, and people have good days and bad days where symptoms are more or less pronounced. any symptom isn't going to be set in stone in severity or even presence in someone's life- severity of disorder changes with age, someone's circumstances, or even day-to-day, especially with cluster B disorders, where the people who have it are defined as being "dramatic, emotional, or erratic" (pg 735)
things change. people change. mental illness isn't as simple as people think, and aspd isn't as different from other illnesses as you'd think. people with it- including izaya- will have their good days and their bad days and their rare moments where something breaks through the clouds and for one moment, you feel normal, however distressing the feeling may be
that's not proof that the illness was never there. that's just life with it!

ooooh this is a good question. there are a lot of amazing designs for him that call to me as shizuo on different levels and that’s the beauty of art! i could go on and on about each manga artist’s portrayals of him and fanartists’ unique art styles and how one captures the best warm smile or scowl or hair tufts or sad brown eyes to me. there’s just. so much to love.
but i'm too shy to tag my fave fanartists and the shizuo i see when i think about him has been yasuda for a long time.
i have beef with how he developed several of his other designs but to me he far and away does the best job at bringing narita’s description of shizuo to life. i've seen a lot argument over narita’s design choice (that i'm not sure how much is genuine?) but each passage written about his appearance is filled with intention and it shapes and means the world to me. :)
bc beyond his height everything about him screams and should scream Most Normal Guy Ever.
even how he presents himself is said to make him appear like he’s playing dress up as someone imposing than actually being imposing. and that’s the kicker. once he’s seen in action he goes from being an unassuming person that anyone with the slightest bit of fighting prowess believes they can take out to the most terrifying person in the room for the exact same reason.
suddenly those traits that make him no different than the next guy become the traits that place him Starkly Outside Normalcy. every part of his design is etched with purpose. he’s lanky without visible muscle bc his body and power and character brute force past logic, he wears sunglasses to hide how soft his eyes are remarked to be, his bleached hair and bartender getup come from those he respects and he uses them all to create an identity to warn others off bc nothing else about him does UNTIL he makes it known how out of the mold of conventionality a freak of nature like him is. then everything clicks into place.
unrelated but it’s not mentioned in the anime that shizuo’s anime-typical vein throbbing is an uncanny phenomenon remarked on by various characters with izaya even saying most would think it’s due to a medical condition which is such a hilarious creative choice that i love to bits.
narita put SO much thought into his character design to the point where every facet of it is tied into his narrative and even slight alterations can detract from that. it makes every one really resonate with me and you can feel that attention to detail that yasuda does with shizuo too. any artist that incorporates all those components into their design of him care for him and his character a great deal which has had the most impactful effect on me. and that amount of care is almost impossible to replicate beyond the artist who was first tasked with drawing him.
(satorigi akiyo is a very close second tho. yasuda is obviously more limited in the amount he draws but she gives shizuo a greater range of expressions even for the same emotion and honestly yasuda walked so she could run in every other capacity but i can not and will not forgive her for giving shizuo blue eyes.)

Ok ok YES to the saika Izaya AU I'm OBSESSED, may I make a suggestion, what if it was Shinra who infected him bc Shinra could care less about the potential harm and cannot be bothered to love humans so he tells Saika he's got this friend who she'll just LOVE and Izaya wouldn't expect one of the few people he trusts to do that to him which left him vulnerable to the infection

While Shinra does show some care about Izaya in canon (at least he acknowledges he's Izaya's only friend and that's why he doesn't really care about associating with him even when Celty shares her concern about him), I could also definitely see him also pawning Saika onto Izaya both because he no longer wants the sword and the hassle that comes with it AND he'd find it an interesting experiment.
Exploring Izaya's feelings about this AND now being a host would certainly be interesting to do. To be betrayed by his only friend...

Whoever you are, you are my best friend.
My hot takes are as follows:
- I don’t care how smart or manipulative he was, Izaya was too young to fully understand the gravity of working with the Yakuza when he started as a teenager and all of the adults involved in making that decision groomed him.
- I am a firm believer that Izaya would have gone on to live a relatively normal life if he had never met Shinra. Shinra getting stabbed was when his life took a turn for the worst.
-Shizuo is just as much responsible for the way their first meeting went as Izaya is. In fact, Shizuo fucking started it.
- Shizuo and Shinra are just as bad as Izaya in a lot of ways, but the difference is that the people around them (Celty) find reasons to excuse their shitty behavior. All three of them are terrible people who gravitated towards each other.
- Izaya’s childhood was bad, and the fact that he doesn’t seem to realize that makes it so much worse.
-Other people who were in Izaya’s life (mainly those who were adults) need to take more responsibility for the way Izaya turned out since they had the power to stop it. This includes Celty, who has been an adult the entire time and has assumably known Izaya SINCE HE WAS 12. (Someone ask me about Celty bc she is my least favorite character).
- None of the things above make Izaya a “good person”, but they do make him a more nuanced character than the show and the fans give him credit for.

Shizuo looked to the man sitting next to him with the corner of his eyes. The sight was so interesting that he forgot his own drink, simply holding it still a few inches from his lips, as if he had become a statue.
Izaya, the known information broker, chugging one bottle after the other, nearly comically falling off his seat as he turned his head back to make sure every little drop of alcohol fell into his mouth. Since when the flea was this much of a drinker?
The blonde sighed, shaking his head in disapproval as he decided it would be best to just let him be and mind his own businesses. Finally sipping from his cup, Shizuo frowned when he noticed the beer had already become warm.
“You need to… learn how to enjoy those, Shi-zu-chan.”
The debt collector turned his head to the side as Izaya’s voice reached his ears, his words were lazily spoken, almost dragged out of his lips. His cheeks, ears and neck tainted with a shameless shade of red. He was wasted, Shizuo thought.
However, after taking a second look at him, Shizuo felt that something was off or, rather, missing. Almost sure it was because of the drinks he had, but Izaya didn’t seem as quick-witted as he usually was, neither sassy, mouthy, teasy and… not as annoying. Shizuo raised an eyebrow, curious about this new side of the flea.
“Huh,” he chuckled, placing his cup down, “maybe you should learn the time to stop, flea,” he said in mockery, testing out some of his theories.
“Meanie,” Izaya whined, pouting as he rested his head on his hands, trying to sound mad, “you should… be nice to me, you know?”
The blonde couldn’t hold back his grin at that answer. The alcohol really had the best of Izaya and, now, all that was left was that mess of a man sitting next to him.
“Aight, aight, I apologize, but you should really call it a day,” Shizuo chuckled softly, placing his hand over Izaya’s and stopping him from taking the cup to his lips. “You’ll have a hangover tomorrow at this rate,” he tried to reason as if Izaya wasn’t already completely wasted.
But, to his surprise, Izaya didn’t say anything this time, just turned his eyes to him, giving Shizuo an angry look as he pouted. “I don’t… hic care, you… dumb Shizu-chan,” he muttered, weakly - and awfully slowly - jerking his hand away from the blonde’s grip and taking the cup to his mouth.
As much as he found it quite cute, truth to be told, Shizuo sighed as he felt some sense of responsibility over that scene. It was his idea that he and Izaya went out for a few drinks, but he didn’t expect things to turn out like that. Izaya did seem to be enjoying himself and, maybe, he was just starting to be a little overprotective.

Once, Izaya read an article about 40 000 years old flute pieces found at Hohle Fels in Germany, carved from the hollow wing bone of a vulture, and he laughed, spinning in his chair until the whole world was a blur, imagining himself carving the city’s bones in a similar way, for someone else to breathe into, waiting for the song of it.
The article suggested that music might have been the strategic advantage then-humans had over later extinct Neanderthals, and it made sense to Izaya, that bones could be weapons.
Finally finished this thing that’s been waiting in my wip folder for months now. A small tribute to lie me to sleep by @onewhodiedyoung. Thanks for rewriting my entire dna

I have a problem with fics end with Izaya quits being an informant. He's famous and powerful, he can choose whom he gonna work for.
Does he has to quit everything he was to be a better person?
this is literally what the first post i ever made was about but im gonna expand on it a little~
i think "being a better person" is kind of like, a loaded statement, like... being "better" is like, by whos standards do we define better? what constitutes better? does better mean, better for the individual? or better for other people around the individual? is it balance? does "better for the individual" mean what makes the individual happier, or what makes them healthier?
by that logic, if its "better means, they're healthier, and don't hurt themselves or others," then just throw izaya in a psych ward! he's healthier, he's getting help and medicine and isn't hurting people and can't hurt himself because he's watched too closely!
obviously this is a terrible idea.
i personally think that being a better person shouldn't be the main goal. i mean- it's good if it happens! and its good to hope it happens! but it shouldn't be the main goal. like.... wanting to stumble across a stray kitten while on a walk. every Cat Person wants their moment where they get to help a lost little kitty and rescue it and hand rear it and all of that. i do too! it's good if you find a lost, scared, and alone stray kitten, who probably wouldn't have survived without you! it's good to hope to get the chance to both help a creature that needs it, and to have a personal desire fulfilled! but if you go on a walk for the sole purpose of finding a cat, you're gonna be pissed and miserable every second that you don't see one, and you might end up snatching the first cat you see and stealing someone's lost pet
ya know?
i think... first and foremost, izaya needs to figure out what makes him happy. does his current job make him happy? is he fulfilled doing it? is it genuinely entertaining, fun, and interesting for him to track information down, and to see peoples' reactions to said info? if yes... he should keep it! durarara is a story about fucked up people doing fucked up things- if you think izaya's job is immoral, everyone better have a different career by the end.
inversely, is he unhappy doing it? is his constant exposure to people who have loved ones, families, stable relationships, hurting him? is he getting an unhealthy sort of enjoyment in seeing peoples' messed up relationships, to cope with his own shitty relationships? or did he simply just find something he'd rather be doing? if so, then... hit da bricks!
and ideally, the fic is about izaya's growth as a person, and him slowly becoming happier- that's what they're usually like, from what i've seen. he'll slowly become a better person, simply by lieu of just, things happening. he's received genuine care and affection, so he has a reason to improve- i kind of talked about this in this post i made while high; aspd is very challenging to recover from, and if you don't have a support system in place, it's a lose/lose situation: either do your best to conform to society's standards and remain bored and lonely, or let your disorder's urges take over but you're at least not depressed. it's kind of hard to find the drive to recover if you feel completely alone in the world.
so if izaya is growing as a person and becoming closer to other people, he'll become happier, become less likely to do insane fuck-with-people shit, because he has no real reason to besides "it's fun-" he's not running from anything anymore. and he can slowly walk back on doing it until he replaces it with something else that's fun- whether it be more "societally acceptable" versions of fun like things to do with your partner, or if he still has a twisted idea of fun but doesn't fuck with, yk, suicidal high schoolers.
he absolutely doesn't have to completely change who he is to become better- if he did that, then he wouldn't be himself anymore! and i don't think him totally changing himself would make him better- he's perfectly capable of growing and improving as a person, while still keeping traits that are less societally acceptable, like his job or his tendency to mess with people- and as for the things that are actually hurting both himself and others (messing with suidical people, his quest to become immortal and go to valhalla (which... also counts as a suicide- just, his weird attitude towards suicide in general) and fwiw, said immortal quest is why he messed with mikado and masomi and co. in the first place, that and It's Fun- see how him having people who care about him, who help him, lead to helping others around him?
he doesn't want to become immortal and kill himself, because he has something worth living for- doesn't need to ruin peoples' lives to gain that immortality- doesn't ruin peoples' lives.
he doesn't need to mess with random people For Funsies because he has someone he cares about in his life, making recovery more possible and the idea of going through the roughness of it less miserable- doesn't need to mess with random people in order to be happy- recovers enough so that he doesn't act on the urge enough to catfish random people and mock their sucidality for The Reaction- doesn't mess with random people
him keeping his info broker job at least provides some sort of service to somebody, doesn't lead to him being miserable, and isn't completely meaningless. is it societally taboo? yeah. is that taboo deserved? yeah. could you say someone, somewhere benefits, for a reason other than "yeah it's fun and i wanted to do it?" also yeah, and isn't that what durarara is all about?

28. what do they do when they're away from each other: (miss each other a lot) they do have to spend a LOT of time separated due to their jobs. ruri going on tour, or kasuka having to shoot a film overseas, but i think they deal with the distance by facetiming and calling each other a lot. kasuka wanders around the places he's working at and takes mental notes on where to take ruri for vacation once they both have some free time.
29. one headcanon about this otp that breaks your heart?: okay i KNOOOOW i talk about vampire ruri a lot, let me be me. Anyways, the idea of mortal x immortal is a fucking insane dynamic. i can't even dive into it. ruri thinks a lot about Death, and a lot about how her female relatives ended up leaving their families and running away. She fears Something will lead her to do the same thing in the end. She fears that after all, she won't be able to break the cycle, and ruin will follow her for eternity. And she won't be strong enough to bring kasuka into that
