Earlier today, Paizo announced long awaited books for their Asian inspired continent Tian Xia. Unlike many other companies attempting projects that large, Paizo went out of their way to hire damn near every Asian TTRPG writer in the business.
I’ve worked on ~100 books & games. I’m often the only Asian on a project. It’s rare to have more than 1 other Asian on a book with me.
The Tian Xia books?
There were like 40 of us! 😲
I’m really glad that Paizo took the time to do this right. 💚
Players are going to see what a difference that level of representation makes when they get their hands on Tian Xia & see the massive diversity of Asian cultures & experiences reflected in the books.
I’m not just talking about countries or ethnicities; there’s also different stories of identity — diasporic groups, immigrant experiences, people reconnecting with their heritage, refugees, people finding & making places of belonging, … The sheer breadth of Asian experiences and identities represented in Pathfinder’s Tian Xia team and in our books is astounding.
This is why representation matters.

Something very interesting in how Eugene Lee Yang has been the one gay asian guy on a (first buzzfeed now) youtube team with otherwise straight white guys for years, so he felt a lot of pressure to perform well (especially in early videos). So he has this public image of an incredibly confident, talented, extroverted guy.
Plus of course, he's an internet celebrity so everyone has parasocial relationships with him (even more so than with other celebrities like actors and such). But obviously none of us actually know what goes on in his head or in his private life beyond what he decides to share.
And now he's playing a guy who feels a lot of pressure to perform well and has to appear confident and competent and extroverted - but who in his own mind has a lot more insecurities and of course acts differently in his private life than he does in public.
Idk. It's just fun. I wonder if he drew on that for his performance for Ambrosius

Love that the new cast of ATLA is all Asian and Native folks but truly hate the capitalistic reimagining of things into live action

thoughts on natla? Still unsure if i should give it a go (like I’ll watch it if I can get something out of it, even if taking the piss out if it. It just seems bland and heartless)
see for me its OFFICIALLY ! a solid 6-6.5/10
I dont get bland ! and I dont get heartless ! There are additions that I think really add flavor to the world, to the worldbuilding, even some character decisions that I think are interesting or fit well for this version of the story ! I can tell from how the cast and director talk about it that they put a lot of love into it !
what it DOES lack. is a sophisticated script. well written dialogue. it has its moments, maybe, but the entire time I was watching it I kept thinking... I bet I could think of a way to get this information across quicker and more naturally.... and thats BAD cus I do NOT consider myself the best writer sdhsd
would I recommend it ? for people who want to have fun watching some good live action fanfiction, absolutely. for someone who likes action/fantasy/c-dramas on in the background, sure. but not for anyone else.
do I want a second season of this ? yes. because frankly, I think a second season will make or break this show. if they dig their heels in on the script/writing style choices then the narrative, the tension, the characters, they'll just fall apart.... If they build on the good stuff they already have going on and pay attention to the right stuff writing wise, they'll have a hit !

Experimenting with dark-skinned Blake with sort of Indian features. She'd be originally born in Vacuo if this were the case.

I really wish they went into lois being korean in maws :( i really wish the season was longer than 10 episodes, all of the emotional development felt rushed to me. they could have done more with her if they had more time
While I agree that MAWS is super rushed, I don't think that more episodes would fix their issues. MAWS inherently has an "I don't see color" approach to their characters of color.
Why did they have a joke about Black Jimmy Olsen not comprehending oppression? Why is his only basis to anything remotely similar to facing bigotry be "being stood up" by his friends? Why does Lois as a Korean American not understand why an alien immigrant would hide his heritage from an unaccepting world after she herself said "nobody normal believes in aliens"? Why is her Asian American dad xenophobic to Clark without any insightful discussion as to how assimilation can make minorities turn against each other? Why is it, in the narrative of MAWS, that the only characters who go through bigotry are white people (and a gorilla)? Why is it in Lois' hope speech to support Superman does she mention that humans are cruel to "people who don't look like us" when Clark passes for a white man?
These aren't things that can be fixed with "more time". It's a fundamental problem with how MAWS depicts characters of color. They view them as a commodified aesthetic acknowledgement of diversity and not people who navigate the world differently. Changing historically white characters into people of color comes with understanding how those different experiences would affect their characterization. It's not skin deep.

i swear some of you people need like. a sign next to mcr art that has the rising sun in it telling you not to reblog it, or something. i keep seeing art with the rising sun in it making the rounds again and again without mention of, i don't know, the symbol that represents a longstanding history of imperialism and genocide? like did you guys just never learn from the myriad of people telling you on here not to do that or is there something i'm missing. it's not an unreasonable request not to spread art with hate symbols in it, so either you didn't see the posts, or you care more about the aesthetics than east and southeast asian people. judging by how many posts have been made and how far they've spread, i think i know which is the answer.

I mean… you can’t really get around how orientalist the design of the Gerudo set is either. Like you’d have to redesign it as well.
yknow in the nicest way possible every time i point out how transphobic the gerudo quest is i get a bunch of asks like this. which like. yes. you are correct. it is racist. i am not denying that it is racist. i am painfully aware of the fact that it is racist. i would absolutely try to fix that if it was within my power to do so. however that was not the specific issue i was addressing in the last post, thus i did not bring it up. i am, as a trans person, equipped to address the transphobia off the top of my head in a way that i am NOT, as a white person, equipped to address the orientalism. one of those things is something i have experience with and one is not necessarily my place to redesign or fix. so.
