brother crab's winter 2024 parting thoughts: ishura s1
Tumblr media
tl;dr was originally meh on this for reasons that really aren't fair, ultimately wound up enjoying it well enough to pick up s2, but wouldn't necessarily recommend (especially if you'll be bothered by the fact that it's Very slow)
full review:
you know what i think for the first half of the season i really didn't give this show a fair shake. based on a skim of its summary and the fact that it had the battle royale tag, i went in thinking it would be structurally similar to shuumatsu no valkyrie (which i'd recently binged and enjoyed immensely)
and that sort of battle royale, a tournament between a roster of op heroes, does seem to be coming up. but unlike snv, ishura doesn't dump us straight into the tournament. there's a whole lot of buildup to it, in fact...
the whole first season is buildup for the tournament to choose a hero, which isn't necessarily a bad thing! just isn't what i expected, so i was a bit on the fence for a while
ultimately though i think i did enjoy this series. it's heavy on the action (and gore) but most of the fight scenes are pretty banging, and the cast is full of fairly interesting characters (many of whom are not long-lived lmao)
some of the characters are so cool, in fact, that it feels like a shame to not get more time with them. the pacing didn't feel bad or anything, but it's a very, for lack of a better word, scattered series. not in a negative way, though, because the relatively huge cast provides a wider look at the world. it's just a lot of build-up and so far not much payoff (but clearly it's the start of a longer thing, so i guess to me that's fine)
the worldbuilding to me is by far the strongest point of the series, even stronger than the action sequences. there are some elements of it that i really love, like the naming conventions ("taren the guarded" "dakai the magpie" "alus the star runner" and so on, instead of family surnames) and the word arts magic
the (fairly early) reveal that not only humans and wyverns but even these... constructs? that seemed like mechanical golems? could use this word arts magic was fantastic to me, and i hope we get to see more interesting things of that nature as we continue
ishura has had a second season announced and even though i was a bit lukewarm on it for half this season, i do think i'll continue. if only because the cast is absurdly stacked and i go where my favorite voice actors go lol
i would still say it isn't exactly exceptional as a fantasy action series, but does do some interesting things with worldbuilding that i don't think i've seen much of before (but i also haven't watched fantasy extensively yet, so don't have too much to compare)
dakai my beloved freak i miss u already umu it was such a trip hearing hoshi souichirou voice a character like dakai though lol i mean i'm sure he's done many before but i more associate him with darling momo revale (and more recently saiyuki swk) so this was. new. and a treat

idk if you can help me with this but i fell in love with offgun watching not me and watching content about them there's so much of tay tawan with them. i like him and i know he has done bl too, but there's so many series he's in, do you know what i should watch of him? or if it's any good?
I can definitely help you with that, yes! Tay is a great actor imo, one of my thai faves actually. While I haven't watched his full discography, I have seen him in A Lot of shows by now so here's my- entirely subjective -guide to watching Tay Tawan's work. And we gotta start off with what I consider his best work and one of the greatest thai shows of all time-
1. 3 Will Be Free
youtube
3wbf is a 2019 drama starring Tay, Mild (my favourite thai actress!!!) and Joss in the main roles. It's a somewhat fast paced crime thriller about three people from very different backgrounds who end up on the run from a mafia boss together and fall in love along the way. This show features a love triangle that ends in ot3, a super badass transfem character played by our queen Jennie Panhan and a whole lot of iconic moments. It was one of the first thai shows I ever watched and I will happily recommend it to anyone who'll listen for the rest of my life. You can watch it for free on YouTube here.
2. The Gifted + The Gifted Graduation
youtube
So this is a two part series and while Tay is only in s2 I must add it to the list bc if you're gonna watch thai shows you need to watch this one. It's arguably one of the best thai series in existence. The plot is captivating and engaging, the cinematography is eye-catching and the cast is one of the best ensemble casts ever. Gun and Sing (Todd in Not Me) are two amazing actors that you'd recognise here but I also recommend looking out for the rest of the cast; especially Jane, Nanon and Chimon who are all incredible actors. Tay will appear in s2 and it's hands down one of his best performances yet. You can find both seasons on yt here.
3. Dark Blue Kiss
youtube
This 2019 series was Tay's first main role in a proper BL, where he starred opposite his long-time ship partner New. The show is a sequel to non BL shows Kiss and Kiss Me Again but I would not recommend watching either of them on account of them being pretty fucking bad. There IS a PeteKao cut that you can watch on yt to get an idea of how those two got together before watching DBK and that should be enough. I also feel the need to warn you that DBK has very mixed reviews and while I loved it, there's no guarantee it would be to your taste. I explained in this post why I loved PeteKao's story and felt it's a very important one that needed to be told so you can look that up before giving it a try if you wish. But honestly if you like BLs and melodrama it would be a fun enough watch. You can watch it on yt here. Also recommend watching their episode in Our Skyy which can be seen as a spin-off story for the same. You can also find that on gmm's yt channel here.
4. The Player
youtube
This show is if Cruel Intentions was a show about the elite class' exploitation of the poor and was also very queer. It's more along the lines of a traditional daytime soap and is hence more over the top and melodramatic. Very entertaining overall despite almost every character being super frustrating about the shitty choices they make. Tay's character is a cop that takes things way too far because of his personal involvement in the case and while the character himself is super annoying Tay does a pretty good job here. I had so much fun yelling at Tin for being a dumb bitch Nice Guy lmao. Also, Joss from 3wbf is one of the main characters and he's soooo hot in this it left me shook so that's a plus! This is another show you can watch on yt here.
5. Remember You
youtube
This is the only show on this list I haven't personally watched. You usually won't catch me recommending shows unless I've seen them but this one's a valid exception. The show is procedural drama centred around serial killers and the MC trying to catch em who has a hidden personal investment in the case. It is a thai remake of the 2015 kdrama Hello Monster. I'd watched the original soon after it finished airing and was captivated by Do Kyungsoo's (Exo's DO) performance and now, even though I wanna watch the remake for Tay, I'm worried my nostalgic loyalties towards the original will taint the experience so I haven't gotten around to it yet. Still, I hear it's a great show and Tay's performance as a loveable serial killer has been said to be quite amazing. So the show goes on the list. It's not available to watch on yt but you can find the official version on netflix and if you don't have that it should be available on sites like dramacool and kissasian.
6. I'm Tee Me Too
youtube
Moving on to some light-hearted titles- it did not occur to me how many more serious roles Tay does as compared to light, fluffy ones -we've got this mini series about 6 guys with distinct personalities who all coincidentally share the same name and end up cohabiting under the same roof. It's a short and fluffy drama centred around friendship/platonic relationships and features GMM's original three biggest BL ships OffGun, TayNew and KristSingto as the main cast. Gun's adorable dog Bibi also shows up to look cute in the background every other episode. It's a short and heart-warming watch that I recommend turning to after one of the heavier shows in the list have you reeling from all the emotions xD. You can watch it on yt here.
7. Secret Seven
youtube
While the pick your own romance vibes this teaser gives off are quite potent, beware of the show's deceptive nature. While finding a secret admirer appears to be the central plot of the story, it's really all about the platonic relationships within the show. The ensemble cast has amazing chemistry with each other and every interaction every character has with another feels wholesome and heart-warming. A love letter to love in it's many forms is what I'd call this show. While Tay is only one in a rather big ensemble cast this show is worth watching for a lot of reasons, biggest of all being Gun's character and the MC's incredible relationship. One of the best representations of platonic soulmates in my opinion. This show will leave you feeling warm and happy. Sadly, GMM privated the eps but you can still find them on sites like dramacool and kissasian.
~~~
And that's all of the shows Tay has been in that I've watched and would recommend other people watch as well. There's only one show which Tay is in- also starring Off in one of the lead roles -that I would not personally recommend and that is Girl2k. It was one of my most anticipated shows of 2020 and I waited a long time to watch it after it was pushed to feb2021 and it honestly was quite disappointing for me. I really enjoyed it at first but I felt that the show kind of wasted all the potential they'd built up with this super amazing and badass and ABSOLUTELY AROACE female lead by shifting all the focus onto a bland male lead near the end. All the romantic lines in the show were deeply disappointing and I hated how the main character's arc and growth felt cheapened by the focus on romance/love over her fighting a thousands of years old evil. You could still check it out and form your own opinions of it if you want but yeah I won't personally recommend it.
If you want you can also check out my analysis of Tay's upcoming gmm shows in these posts here and here. Hope this helps and happy watching!
Buckle in folks cause I’m about to put more effort into this than an english assignment Presenting Why Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous is actually an amazing show
Now what defines the term amazing you might ask? I’m talking about a show that goes above and beyond in plot, characters, storytelling, and overall experience. Nowadays most adult shows don’t meet my standards much less a kids show so if that gives you an idea how good this show is stop right now and go watch it if you haven’t. Spoilers ahead ofc but as an aspiring film major I will be diving into just about everything I love and this is gonna get long.
For your convince I will start with a simple bullet point list and then extend on them below, so if you only wanna see the big points and not my thoughts behind them this first parts for you.
Black mc
Diverse main cast (4/6 are poc)
Actual plot lines and a lot of suspense
Very dark for a kids show
Complex characters that develop
Fits in with the main Jurassic World series beautifully
Body language and facial expressions are top tier
Have genuine relationships (platonically and/or romantically) between all of the main 6
Phenomenal camera angles and use of special effects
Great with details
Amazing VA’s
Continuity
So the nose dives begins
Black mc: To some people this might not matter that much but holy cow this is so important and such a big step. The people complaining are just weird middle aged white people, like do you know how big of an impact a black mc can have on young black children. It’s so important and it makes them feel happy because someone actually looks like them. Clear evidence of this was Into The Spider Verse (which is also an amazing movie oml). Come to think of it the only black mc I think I’ve ever seen in an animated kids show is probably Static Shock (also an amazing show ily). Somehow representation has got swept under the rug in this day and age which is ironic really, but this show does an amazing job with tackling that and I love it.
Diverse main cast: I can’t think of any recent kids movies/tv shows, live action or animated, that have this much representation. In animation is also very easy for the show runners to make a character poc and then have a white VA, but jwcc is quite the opposite. Honestly the characters look so much like their VA’s that something tells me the animation team based the characters off them and not the other way around. Not only that but their names actually match with their ethnicities. So for reference or just anyone that doesn’t know, Ben and Brooklynn are white, Sammy is hispanic, Darius is black, Kenji is asian, and Yazmina is middle eastern. Sammy’s last name is Gutierrez, Yazmina’s is Fadoula, Kenji’s is Kon and Darius’s Bowman. Gutierrez is a common last name in Mexico and Latin America in general. Fadoula is found throughout upper Africa and the Middle East, Kon is rare name of Japense origin, and Bowman is a common last name among black folks in the US. So not only do they have a poc cast, voiced by poc people, but all the characters have realistic names. Not to mention they are very good on skin tone in the show, personally I think Yaz should’ve been just a bit darker but hey I’ll take it and run.
Actual plot lines: This seem like stating the obvious but work with me here. Most kids and even adult shows have a very episodic format, there’s nothing wrong with that per say but having a plot and conflict build up and having little things matter is much more satisfying in my opinion. Most kids shows have some conflict but its very PG which is also fine that’s what it’s meant for. But every once in a while you’ll find a show that had plot wise beyond it’s years and those are the golden ones. Easily and rightfully the most famous is Avatar the Last Airbender or ATLA. This show to this day is still one my favorites and truly nothing will ever top it, but in my years of watching kids shows after it jwcc might just be second. We can argue all day about what’s the best and it’s truly a matter of opinion, but to me atla and jwcc just achieve such a level of complexity that 99% of kids and even adult shows don’t reach.
Very dark: While this might not be exactly the best for kids it’s great for an olderish audience. Honestly it having a much darker element makes the show enjoyable for all ages while still keeping it chill enough so that children may watch. But come to think of it it’s hard not to make a show about dinosaurs dark, the show runners do a wonderful job at keeping it intense and exciting, but still kid friendly, and to me thats incredibly impressive. Not to mention since the show isn’t afraid to go dark they can do more (such as ben’s “death”, the hunters etc) which makes it go from good to great. Reminds me a lot of atla and I know I keep mentioning atla but know that is the biggest compliment ever. atla is easily the best animated/kids show of all time so the fact that a bring it up so much is huge. There have been shows in the past that have tried to replicate what atla (such as voltron..) and it just hasn’t worked. I think this show nails the boundary between too dark and not dark enough.
Complex characters: Oh yes. If there’s one thing I love more than an ensemble cast it’s a cast that grows and develops as the series progresses. Sure the main 6 might start off as typical character tropes (Darius the super fan, Yaz the loner, Sammy the extrovert, Ben the underdog, Kenji the arrogant, and Brooklynn the influencer.) but they become so much more than that. I’d say at least half of them are completely different people between the 1st episode and the latest one. An easy example being Ben and Kenji. Ben started off as a naive, timid, and terrified person and has become confident, independent, and brave. Kenji started off as arrogant, selfish, and apathetic person and became compassionate, driven, and concerned. All of them have had some sort of change even if it’s not super dramatic and that’s important. It makes the storytelling better because they grow as they go.
Fits in with JP/JW beautifully: In terms of shows connecting to movies this has gotta be some clone wars level s-tier stuff. Personally I have never watched clone wars but my sister has and she always raves about how well this show connects to the movies, and from what I’ve seen I completely agree. A youtube channel by the name of Silverscreen Edits actually put together the scenes from every time they overlap, mainly in S1 but also the cold open from Fallen Kingdom. I’d advise you to watch it because it’s just incredible. The show runners nail ever detail of these scenes and it truly feels like you’re watching the same scene from a different perspective. The set up is beautiful and I cannot rave enough about how amazing it is, my favorite easily being the dome scene because of all the small details. Not to mention this show actually connect JW and FK because it shows us that the cold open was 6 months later while the rest was 3 years later. Quite honestly I had no idea these two scenes were that far apart from each other, I thought the opening was from a years or two later not 6 months, so this show really connected the dots between these two movies and made them flow together much nicer. And I love all the countless references too old and new JP/JW movies. Overall this show is a great addition to the franchise.
Body language and facial expressions: You might be thinking to yourself, hmph that is a really odd point to make, let me tell you it’s not and I’ll explain why. When analyzing films I usually tend to stick to live action because one of my favorite parts of films is how characters react to things, and we animation we really don’t get that. Most of the time even if shows get this complex they won’t use both the way jwcc. What impressed me so much was how amazing they are at this, the animation team seriously needs more praise. Jwcc is great at facial expressions which I will say other animated shows know how to do as well, but they are also so amazing at body language which is rare rare when it comes to animation. It’s because it’s so hard and often times it just doesn’t fit, but they do an amazing job with this and it makes the characters feel so life-like. When a character is sad or closed off their shoulders hunch, when they feel scared they stiffen up and cover their ears (which is another detail I love so much, I never realized till this show that hardly anyone ever covers their ears and it makes a lot of sense because these dinos are very loud) and when they feel hopeless their shoulder sag and their head drops, do you see what I mean? You can quite literally tell what these kids are feeling and thinking without them saying anything that is so impressive and it makes the show that much better. It makes it easy to analyze and if it wasn’t clear around I love to do so.
Genuine relationships between all of main cast: I will not budge at this point at all, gonna say it right now if you disagree argue with the wall. I might have some bias on this but one, if not my favorite, part of any media is an ensemble cast. It’s something I actively seek out, and when I say ensemble cast I don’t mean a trio, I mean a full cast, my favorite being 6 but 4 or 5 will do. So when I found out this show had 6 main characters I was immediately interested. Not only because I love ensemble casts but I also wanted to see how they handled it. Ensemble cast are so rare because they are extremely hard to do and do well. I will even criticize atla on this. At one point they had 6 main characters and they never elaborated on more than a handful of the duos and just focused on the group as whole. But this is typical and easiest to do without giving up individual character development so I get that. But jesus christ jwcc does a phenomenal job with this, and I mean phenomenal. Out of the 15 different duos you can get between 6 characters then have elaborated on 11 of them, and it could easily be more this is just from memory. I might make a post elaborating on this specifically because it’s just amazing. This time they take to flesh out these relationships truly makes them feel like a unit and a family, instead of just a group of people all working towards the same goal. This is easily the most impressive and rewarding of any of the points on this list in my opinion. (coming from #1 squad lover right here)
Camera angles and special effects: This shows downfall for some was that it had strange animation, honestly it never bothered me and since I’ve watched dragon prince and rwby, it’s clear that bad animation never stops me from watching a show. But I think people just won’t give it a chance, because when you do you’ll see it’s actually very good. To me the coolest part of the animation is the dinos. They look incredible and so so similar to the cgi used in JW. That’s hard to do so more claps for the animation team I love y’all. They also have to work around the PG side of this show and do a great job at implying what happens but never actually showing what happens. This is all angles, not to mention they do a great job at showcasing the park and the scenery so that magic from the movies really translates to the show. Finally my favorite scene of the show from an avid slow mo lover has got to me when Ben falls of the monorail (idk why it is cause he’s literally my fav and I was so upset) The scene is just beautiful and the set up before hand makes it that much more heart breaking. The use of slow mo is amazing I literally cannot rave about this scene enough. It builds so much suspense and they used just the right amount, to much and the scene would move to slow, and to little the scene would be to fast. I need more great scenes like this in S4 (idk if I want the angst that comes with it too I’ll get back to you)
Details: To me details, in any show in general, is what makes it go from great to fantastic. An example of this is Harry Potter, something that hooked me into this franchise was how much small details mattered and it’s the same with jwcc. There are so many throw away lines that end up coming back and all us are hitting ourselves for missing it. Such as Ben saying early on he knows where the tracker beam is and when he “dies” and the crew can’t find it it shows how important he was. Those are details I love to see. Or the three dinos, one of which Sammy released, coming back all season. Of course toro as well and he always kept his burns. Not to mention the animation team always kept Ben’s scar in and I think that’s an important detail because he shaped who he is. Keep up the good work animation and writing team because I love what you’re doing with this (also I’m 90% sure the compass is another one of these details I’m calling it rn)
Amazing VA’s: Honestly VA’s in general do not get enough credit and they really should. But these 6 are pretty amazing let me tell you. If I’m not mistaken Ryan Potter (Kenji’s VA) is the only one with a notable history of voice acting as he played the title character in Big Hero 6. (fun fact I had no idea and when I found this out I quite literally screamed). But the others have also done things as well, most of it being live action though, and voice acting is much different. Honestly I just need to make a post about the various roles they’ve had cause looking into this has been an experience. Anyway all of them do such an incredible job with this ahh. I think the times where you can really tell how different they all are is when they lash out. This happens quite often and honestly it’s expected, I mean they’re 6 teenagers in a stressful environment of course they’ll last out. But all of them have such a different way of doing it, Darius is hopeless, Kenji is nervous, Yaz is emotional, Ben is harsh, Brooklynn is stern, and Sammy is level headed. Usually everyone lashes out the same way so the fact that they’re so different in just one aspect shows you how good they are. Each character is so individual and all of them have different goals and morals which is not only realistic but it makes way for conflict which is always interesting.
Continuity: Now this could arguable go with details but it’s slightly different so I’m making this a separate point. Continuity to put it simple it basically not have the show be episodic. Honestly that completely what I expected from this show because that how most kids shows are. In this show the plot not only progress each episode but so do the characters and their trauma. Most of the time the plot will progress but anything bad that has happened to the characters will not show and is hardly talked about (COUGH VOLTRON). To me it’s something that has to be addressed because if the characters don’t grow what was the point of it. And they’ve shown that characters grow based on the events that happen and I love that. Another thing about continuity is when show runners stick a pin in something and actually go back to it (COUGH RWBY). Jwcc is amazing at this and make a point to bring back just about everything that gets sidelined in the first place. It’s so impressive and make the show that much more enjoyable. There have been countless times where I get so caught up with the pins that shows just leave there and it makes me so mad, but jwcc is good at for the most part because of course some things will slip through. But they always get back to the important things.
The conclusion: Overall this show is phenomenal and if my essay hasn’t convinced you I’m not sure what will. The show is amazing at storytelling and plot and the lovable main cast makes it that much better. It is so much better than a good chunk of kids shows and honestly part of me wishes it was rated PG-13 cause I really wanna see that. But they do an amazing job and keep it kid friendly enough while still discussing mature topics. It’s the next atla to me and something that many kids shows now days try to be and fail. It’s impressive and complex and truly one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. Film major mara out, and if you actually read all of this ily mwah.
So much to watch, not enough time in the week - What does Fall 2020 look like?
A list of what looks interesting in the next season and silly reasons as to why
Tumblr media
I’m not the sort of person who likes finding out too many (in some cases even a smidgen of) details about anime I’m going to watch, so this will be a spoiler free preview of the season. Here is a list of anime I will try and you can expect to hear about on Kagemajaya.
Click on the show names to be taken to their MAL pages for more detail.
Hype
Taisou Zamurai
A male cast gymnastics anime from MAPPA (the studio of Yuri!!! on Ice.) Enough said.
Watch the trailer here.
Tumblr media
Chuan Shu Zijiu Zhinan
This one’s a bit of a cheat as we’ve already seen 2 episodes of it (3 for those who have VIP accounts on weTV.) However, I was indeed hype for it before it started. Based on a BL novel by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, the author of Mo Dao Zu Shi, this one promises a lot to people who enjoy transmigration, cultivation and a bit of gay. It is also a quite funny isekai parody. The only downside is that it doesn’t share the same visual quality as MDZS, and is entirely 3D. It’s a good thing I’m not much of a stickler for hot visuals.
Watch it here on its official stream.
Tumblr media
Tian Guan Ci Fu
Another donghua based on a BL novel, well-known among the danmei fans also by its English name of Heaven Official’s Blessing. Also written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (boy, are they busy.) And a big plus: it’s not 3D, so really looking forward to watching handsome men cultivate together in pseudo-historic China. Beautiful setting, beautiful boys. Now one can only hope for an interesting plot too and we are set.
Watch the trailer here.
Cautiously Expectant
Tumblr media
Yuukoku no Moriarty
I saw manga adverts for this one all around Akihabara and Ikebukuro last year when I went on a little trip to Japan. The bishie Professor Moriarty was an immediate pull, and as a Holmes fan, I feel attracted to most of its adaptations, despite almost always being let down. The one thing that makes me cautious about this one is that it is published by a shounen magazine that is not GFantasy, so I’m not sure if the bishie designs and the male cast actually mean what I want it to mean. Fingers crossed.
Watch the trailer here.
Giving It a Shot
Inu to Neko Docchi mo Katteru to Mainichi Tanoshii
A cute looking comedy short about a dog and a cat.
Tumblr media
Jujutsu Kaisen
A mostly male cast Shounen Jump affair. Spring 2020’s Kakushigoto also implied that it has a fujoshi fanbase - let’s see what that’s all about.
Maesetsu!
A female cast gag comedy sol created by Lucky Star’s Yoshimizu Kagami. I watched Lucky Star fairly recently and found it quite entertaining with many sweet/funny characters. I suppose we will see if Yoshimizu still has it. Fingers crossed.
Adachi to Shimamura
I try to watch all queer anime as they come, and this comes in from the shoujo ai quota. Looks like a pretty straightforward romance. Hopefully it will have heart.
Kaeru no Pickles: Kimochi no Iro
All I know about this one is that it has a chill looking poster and has a slice of life tag on MAL. I’m not entirely sure whether we’ll get this subbed, but if we do, I’ll give it a shot.
Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko
Fell for the slice of life tag once again. This one is an isekai with a soft looking MC. Not entirely sure it’ll be up my alley, but no harm in trying it, maybe for a pleasant surprise.
Sore dake ga Neck
This one seems to have the cool setting of a convenience store. I did initially think this was going to be a sol as well, but seems like that might not be the case. Either way, cool setting.
Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle - Rhyme Anima
Another anime whose source project I saw plastered all around Tokyo. I’m not a huge fan of idol shows but the rapping bit makes me a bit curious.
Noblesse
A manhwa massively popular among female fans which has also received one off adaptations before, it’s finally getting its turn for a full cour among the hype the industry seems to have for Korean webtoons these days (Kami no Tou, God of High School, etc.) I did watch one of the OVA’s years ago, and wasn’t entirely impressed but then again I can’t judge a whole work based on one arc adapted into a single episode. Male cast action stuff. We shall see and judge.
Magatsu Wahrheit: Zuerst
This was chosen entirely on my shallow criteria as usual: visuals with two dudes on them. Now we’ll see whether the German name is a cringe factor or it’s actually interesting.
Sequels
Tumblr media
Osomatsu-san 3rd Season
Osomatsu-san has been a consistently high quality production for me since the beginning. The humor is definitely my cup of tea, though as with any episodic gag comedy, some sketches do miss. It is more often than not a hit. The seiyuu cast is a huge huge pull, as this is not them only acting out an already written character but you can actually hear them having fun as the sextuplets. It is also one of the rarer shows where I, as a person who isn’t great at focusing on visuals, appreciate the impeccable quality of animation. So hype for another season of this majorly fun series and to welcome Matsuno’s back home - coziness, here I come.
Quanzhi Gaoshou 2
I watched the first season of Quanzhi Gaoshou (or King’s Avatar) because it was made by the studio of MDZS, and it was the first time I had seen a good looking Chinese animation production. And it didn’t disappoint. Production quality was similar and more importantly, it had a very engaging plot - pro MMORPG players playing MMORPG,  their personal dramas and the actual (surprisingly fun for me) gameplay and action. Its most important quality is still its charming cast for me, a successful ensemble cast, where with the exception of the antagonists, everyone and their relationships are lovely. Mostly a male cast show, it does also have nice ladies. Looking forward to going back to them. My only personal issue (definitely not a flaw on the show’s part but my attention span) is that it has so many teams and characters that I forgot most of who was who. Fingers crossed it’ll be easy to get back into.
Haikyuu!!: To the Top 2nd Season
Haikyuu is back again, to finish off the “To the Top” arc. The first cour of this season was probably the season that took me out of the Haikyuu hypnosis state where I assumed everything that came out with the name attached to it was great. It was still enjoyable in its second half but I do feel like the magic has worn off now. I hope I’m wrong and the tournament hype will bring it back again. Haikyuu is at its best when it’s tense in-match and funny with character interactions, so fingers crossed for that.
Ani ni Tsukeru Kusuri wa Nai! 4
The Chinese comedy short is back! As mentioned a couple of paragraphs ago, gag comedies are always hit or miss with their sketches, and this one is also mostly a hit for me, though definitely not at the level of Osomatsu-san. The pull of this show is the cute boys and their dumbassery. Looking forward to its easy fun and more Kai Xin.
Also continuing...
Mo Dao Zu Shi Q, Great Pretender
Have been enjoying both these shows greatly so far. 2 more cours of MDZS Q to go with their cute chibi fun, and Great Pretender’s last case (9 eps) is already released on Japanese Netflix so now we wait for Laurent and the gang to reach us. Really looking forward to the emotional drama of Laurent and hopefully some proper addressal of his feelings for Edamame. Either way, it’ll look gorgeous and will be heaps of fun if the first three cases are anything to go by.
I might pick up other shows and most likely drop some of these throughout the season but here’s hoping it will be enjoyable overall despite the small number of shows I’ll start with. What are you guys planning to watch?
1-3 for the ask thing uwu
1. Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?
ok so. i have like....3 and a half? projects going on right now, in various states of progress from “actively working on and almost finished with” to “all i have is a few jotted down notes”. one of them is an original that i don’t wanna talk about on here for privacy reasons and shit (will tell you abt it if you pm me, bee) and one is a commission that i currently only have a premise and background info from the commissioner from bc i’m trying to finish this other project first but! i’ll talk about the other 2!
so one of them is my fic for marveltrumpshate, which. i should have done a long while back but then Shit Started Happening and it fell to the back burner and just hasn’t come back yet, but! it’s basically one of those “tony and peter gradually becoming family and learning how they fit with each other” fics - i’ve actually always wanted to write one of those and just never had the opportunity/energy to do it, so i’m excited about that. as of now i only have like 1 scene because i’m literally the worst and also MTH didn’t give an actual hard deadline and i. have ADHD. but yeah right now there’s not much to love but i do really like the amount of freedom that comes with writing one of these fics, since there’s so much empty time between SM-hoco and IW
the other is.......one of those “i don’t even go here but i got so attached to these 2 characters that didn’t turn out to be endgame and now i Have To” fics lol. i’m not gonna tell you the fandom. it’s not gonna happen, i literally hate the show and only watched it for like 4 characters out of the giant fucking ensemble cast and at this point i’m just here for 1 ship and that’s it. anyway though, it’s basically a rewrite of the latest season but this time with my ship as the main focus. it’s written as a series of scenes, started as a 5 + 1 and became.....an 11 + 1? we’re not gonna talk about that either. it’s sort of a showing of how one of the characters gradually realizes that he’s bisexual and in love with his best friend, who just recently came out too, while also dealing with deep-seated depression. i’m almost done with that one, i just have one scene left! and as for what i love most about it....i think just seeing the progression of the MC/narrator’s thoughts and feelings about his sexuality and mental health and like...the recurring motifs that i’ve sprinkled into it, like how the other character always taps his fingers on stuff when he’s anxious. it’s one of the only 20k+ fics i’ve written (which. it was meant to be like 5k max at first. it’s probably gonna be like 32k in the end. i hate myself) so it’s fun to see the progression from start to finish
2. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project
the original project i have in the works! i’m not gonna say much, but i will say that it’s (hopefully) meant to be a YA novel, it’s very much a queer story, and it’s got my vibe written all over it lol
3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)
so i feel like i definitely have one or two but i can’t think of any right now - i do, however! have a bunch of song lyrics that give me super vague but super palpable inspo so i’ll give yall some of those
“you left me stained, called it art” - trust my lonely, alessia cara
“i miss the days of a life still permanent” - i wanna get better, bleachers
“we might be hollow but we’re brave” - 400 lux, lorde
“only bad people live to see their likeness set in stone...what does that make me?” - still sane, also lorde
“the secrets you tell me, i’ll take to my grave. there’s bones in my closet, but you hang stuff anyway” - guillotine, jon bellion
the entirety of heather by conan gray
the switch from “how long can we keep this up” to “how long till we call this love” in distance by christina perri
“low on self-esteem, so you run on gasoline” - gasoline, halsey
“can’t take the kid from the fight, take the fight from the kid” - camisado, p!atd
“we tried the world, good god it wasn’t for us” and “with my mid-youth crisis all said and done, i need to be youthfully felt ‘cause god i’ve never felt young” - jackie and wilson, hozier
“my babe would never fret none, about what my hands and my body done. if the lord don’t forgive me, i’d still have my baby and my babe would have me” - work song, also hozier lol
the entirety of turning out pt ii by ajr, especially “you said you’d love me, no matter what. you said you loved me, is that what i loved?”
“and we’re not bruised, they’re just party tattoos” - party tattoos, dodie
Ensemble Stars: First Impressions
I've heard of Ensemble Stars back in 2017 when people were talking about it being adapted into an anime. Never thought about it that much and now here we are in 2019 with me recently having watched the first episode of the anime and being confused as heck.
Having binge watched about 5 anime series with a huge cast of characters prior to this, I really got lost and almost immediately forgot the characters and their names because I am keeping up with so much. That's one thing that I didn't like about the first episode. They shove you all these characters, say their names and kind of expect you to know them. I do like the introduction to the plot though, even I, someone who has not played the game, knows the gist of what's going on. Anzu is a transferee who wants to be a producer but the school is sort of an all males academy with a ranking system for all the guys in the idols course and the males she meet want a revolution. Got it.
Time for the characters! (The actual reason why I made this post)
Tumblr media
Anzu
The MC, obviously, I love her already. Considering the summary for the anime, she's supposed to be the player right? I really like her name because it's unique and I can easily remember it because I can associate it with the word "answer". Congrats! We have recruited another girl in the "long(?) brown haired MC" club. She doesn't seem to be the clumsy type (so far) and more of a go with the flow type of character. Maybe she's just like that because she's in a new environment. Poor girl got fucked by Koga.
Tumblr media
Subaru Akehoshi
I remembered him as the Kira Kira guy. He really likes money and shiny things huh? We just can't have an anime without one of its main characters being a really hyper guy. He's so cheerful and bouncy but can be annoying. At least its the tolerable kind of annoying.
Tumblr media
Hokuto Hidaka
The cool type who is supposedly the mature one in the group. He has ambitions and is really helpful to Anzu even with his weird bargain thing. I like him and I would gladly see his character get more screen time and development.
Tumblr media
Makoto Yuuki
It's so much easier to remember a name when you know another character you like with the same one. He's really nerdy and shy so he has a cute factor to his character.
Tumblr media
Mao Isara
Didn't even know his name until I looked up in the wiki. Seems like a responsible student. He gives off a second in command sort of vibe to me.
Tumblr media
Tetora Nagumo
Can't say much but he seems spirited. I like his hair.
Tumblr media
Kuro Kiryu
He seems like a pretty cool senior. Probably a tsundere who would pat the MC on the head and say good job while looking away. He just seems like the type.
Tumblr media
Koga Oogami
He is probably the asshole character you inevitably end up liking. I am keeping my hopes up for this guy! but... I want to punch him for landing on Anzu.
Tumblr media
Tori Himemiya
Problematic child that I immediately fell in love with. Unless someone can compete with this sadistic baby that I have now adopted, I don't think I'll have another favorite character. His character really left a strong impression the second he got on screen for me. His really bright pink hair (that is very much like Yuno Gasai's) caught my eye and then when he began talking to the B1 ranked students like they were scums of the earth and enjoying their disobedience just made a switch inside my head go off. I love him, okay?!
Tumblr media
Keito Hasumi
Seems to be a strict character.
Eleven Questions Tag
I was tagged by @sad-witchy-writeblr thanks!
1. How long have you been writing?
Probably about 14 years now. Since I was in the 7th grade.
2. What are the major themes of your current wip(s)
From the Void deals with a lot of teen mental health issues, relationships with parents, and trauma passed between generations. And I guess friendship and loneliness play a huge part as major theme.
3. What do you want people to take away from your story once they’ve read it?
For one, I’d like for them to understand that my main character, Kwin, was a hero long before any of the conflict of the novel takes place. In a decision between ending his own life or seeking help, Kwin chose to seek help and that’s always made him a hero in mind!
4. Would you be excited if people write fan fiction about your wip(s)
Well, Kwin and Jonah’s friendship alone is a factory for possible fan faction. And yes, I would be excited, cause if I can inspire somebody to put their ideas down on a document or piece of paper, that’s phenomenal!
5. What’s your go-to writing beverage?
Coofffeeeeeee
6. Who is your favorite OC? Tell me about them?
I’m probably gonna stick to From the Void on these to keep it narrowed down and simple lol. Uh.... My favorite has to be Kwin. He’s my MC, he’s an excellent fighter and has trained to do so since he was 7. He loves to draw and has been doing that for even longer than he’s been fighting. But I think the best parts of Kwin are how much he loves people, and how much he’s willing to stick his neck out for his friends, and how he never wants to make anyone feel unwelcome or uncomfortable. And like how much he adores and respects his mom and best friend. He’s an angel tbh. A snarky, cheeky, flirty, axe wielding, inter-dimensional demon slaying angel.
7. Do you feel that mistakes are important learning tools in the writing journey?
Always
8. Rank your OCs by their capability in a foot chase(either running after or from something, your choice)
Since my characters do a lot of running away from things in From the Void, I know this answer... somewhat lol. I’ll stick with the Outliers.
Zig-Zag: Runs like the wind. Kid’s gifted.
Kwin: Very athletic.
Gabi: Matches Kwin’s athleticism.
Jonah: Hates running but does it to stay in shape.
Holly: Also hates running. Doesn’t do it to stay in shape.
Harlo: Tallest of the bunch, slowest of the bunch. Also the most likely to turn around and fight whatever’s chasing them before long to try and hold it off.
9. Does your wip have a romance? Tell me about it!! If not, tell me about a friendship/important relationship in your wip!!
I guess there are two romances in From the Void. Kwin’s romance subplot with Jonah is there, and it’s basically two best friends coming to terms with the fact that they have always had feeling for each other, but they also rely heavily on each other emotionally and to risk losing family by getting together and possibly breaking up later is a terrifying concept for the both of em. So we’ll see how that plays out I guess. Kwin also has sexual relationships with girls in the story, but those aren’t romances, I don't think.
Another POV character of mine is Lori! And she’s a young investigative and true crime writer married to Jamie, who’s the newest and probably youngest homicide detective in their town. So there's this really fun romance between Lori and her husband. And I get to write their fun, witty, supportive and mature relationship while Jamie helps Lori with her new book on American Cults! And I can’t wait for that!
10. Do you believe in the advice, “Kill your darlings”?
For one, I don’t always take it literally. I usually take it as “Put your characters through the ringer. Show no mercy.” In which yes, I do believe that. I’ve mostly given my characters what they need to beat anything I can throw at them... But I’m still gonna throw everything I can at ‘em. Y’know... Just to make sure they can handle it.
If we’re actually talking about killing characters, I think it depends on who your audience is and why you’re writing. If you’re writing a survival horror or disaster with overarching themes, sure, take a knife to your character list and keep the reader on their toes. But if you’re writing a YA fantasy or sci fi ensemble series, and you’re selling readers on the fact that they’re gonna get to join this cast of characters on adventures over the course of a series, I don’t know if you necessarily need to kill them off. Like, we know what we’re here for and it ain’t always Game of Thrones. Sometimes I want The Last Airbender-- which is just as valid lol.
11.  Do you prefer plotting or world-building?
Depends on the project, but mostly world-building, cause it gives me so many plot ideas anyways that I can usually use the world-building as a launching point for plotting.
Yuletide Rec List
Y’all there are 3365 fandoms in the Yuletide noms and some of them are really good so I thought I’d just make a promo post here and also rant a little bc I’m excited even tho it’s barely October just looking at this list.
So I’m gonna put the rest of this barely coherent ranting under a read more but like guys, I’m excited.
So here goes. Some fandom recs!
Books
The Alpennia Trilogy by Heather Rose Jones
Mistress/bodyguard ship in the first book, which leads to so many possibilities! Loyalty kink! Power imbalance! All that shit!
Amazing worldbuilding and magic mixed in with religion
I’ve only read the first book but I’m totally gonna request it
Best for femslash fic tbh, but I guess you could do gen.
The Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab
Again the worldbuilding is good. But the series is overall very dark. Also, an ensemble kind of feel.
My ship is two powerful magicians who seem to be the last of their kind, both working for royal families, one of whom lives as a prince and the other of whom is enslaved.
They’re enemies most of the time but still.
But a lot of people ship other things bc ensemble cast. There is one canon m/m ship. There is a slightly OP female crossdressing thief. There’s angsty brothers. There’s lots of people basically.
Good fandom for m/m, f/m, gen, even poly. Very good fandom for dark fic or whump imo.
Peter Darling by Austin Chant
Trans Peter Pan who used to be Wendy Darling
Ship is Peter Pan/Captain Hook
Writing style is gorgeous
Captures the cruel, childlike side of Peter Pan.
Good fandom for slash mostly, but I imagine you could pull off gen too.
Nero Wolfe series by Rex Stout
Detectives in New York in some vaguely historical time period.
Narrator is Archie Goodwin, very snarky and charming, one of my favorite characters of all time.
All the mysteries are fun but you’re mostly here for the dynamics between Archie, Nero Wolfe himself, and all the other regular members in the series--the detectives sometimes brought in to help out, the house cook, the pissed-off policemen, etc etc.
Also totally fine to read out of order, I’ve never really paid much attention to the order myself. Includes both novels and novellas.
A lot of people write slash in this fandom; I don’t really ship any slash ships for it (I’m kind of a gen bitch here) but I admit the potential is there.
Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner
Technically YA fantasy but I’d say it’s not that firmly YA except for the first book.
Land of twists and intrigue with the occasional questing adventure. Pseudo-Greek setting.
Includes one of my favorite f/m ships for which I long for more dark fic.
Surprisingly active fandom, I am nowhere near caught up on the fanfic for the last book published.
Good fandom for het, slash, occasionally poly, and very good for GEN (sorry, the MC’s name is Gen and I couldn’t resist).
Goblin Market by Christina Rosetti
Idk why there’s a fandom nomination for a poem but I guess I’ll go with it, it’s a good poem.
Very ripe for femslash tho technically the MCs are sisters (but do they read like sisters? No, no they do not) so you might have to go AU for it.
Kind of dark and weird but childlike at the same time.
Movies/TV Shows/Anime/Literally Anything But Books
Kakegurui (anime/manga)
I’ve only watched the anime but I hear the manga is good.
Crazy high school obsessed with gambling gets even crazier when Yumeko the gambling freak shows up just to start drama.
Weirdly dark even tho nothing life threatening really happens. Ridiculously grotesque facial expressions on absolutely everyone.
Very good for femslash, decent for het and poly. You could probably write gen. But how.
Kado: The Right Answer (anime)
It’s sci-fi show that’s half about contact with aliens and half about the unhealthy relationship between an alien and his favorite human. And when I say half I mean “gets really dark in the last third”. But if you’re mostly interested in that part, it’s short enough that you still get there pretty quick.
I really just want dark slash fic, that’s all guys.
Two Faces of January (movie)
This is also a book by Patricia Highsmith but I nominated the movie bc it has Oscar Isaac and Viggo Mortensen.
Dark thriller vibes
Slashy vibes with weird daddy kink overtones (it can’t be helped, and this remains constant whether it’s book or movie)
Somehow I still ship it despite not really liking daddy kink.
Just trust me
Singin’ In the Rain
I’m really hoping this was nominated by someone who wants OT3 fic.
That’s all.
Gattaca
If you don’t already know about Gattaca are you even following me
It has Jude Law in it
Also it explores dystopian ableism and yet has an oddly ableist ending which consistently PISSES ME OFF, which is why I always request fix-it fic.
People really like slash for this movie and I get it but I don’t really ship it but a lot of people do so if you watch it, you will probably ship it too.
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
British miniseries which I somehow like despite not liking most BBC shows. (Seriously, my roommate and sister have both tried to get me into Sherlock and Dr. Who and I just can’t, good for y’all who like such things tho.)
I’m mostly here for the fae aspects and one of the MCs being traumatized and descending into insanity.
But the aesthetic is also pretty rad.
 Harlots
It’s about harlots. Kind of Victorian? I think? Idk time periods guys.
It portrays sex and sex workers in interesting, pretty down to earth ways.
It’s a good place for femslash but I somehow find myself craving gen.
The aesthetic is strong.
Luke Cage
I’ve still only seen the first season but it was rad
A lot of black people, guys
Also superhero-y things
Probably best for het, tbh, tho I would slash ship Luke with Cornell. Why doesn’t anyone seem to ship that?
Sakeru Gum
It’s like a five minute commercial compilation that will change your life.
I’ve probably reblogged it at some point. Otherwise, search it on Youtube.
Loooong looooong mAAaaaaan
Fandoms I’m Not Actually In But Might Join If The Prompts Look Good
There’s a couple different books nommed by Mary Renault! I’m reading the Alexander Trilogy right now (Alexander the fuckign Great, guys), which is nommed, so if things work out I might write for that. There’s also The Last of the Wine and Mask of Apollo.
Also, there are two series nominated that are by K.J. Charles. I’ve only ever read The Henchmen of Zenda by K.J. Charles but that was really good, so I may have to try one of these series out. Of course, I’d have to actually have time, and series are a bit lengthy for me this semester! But I might read a book or two if the prompts look excellent.
Someone nominated Learning Curves by Ceillie Simkiss? Which is an indie lesfic romance novella which was published only this August. I’m shocked it somehow ended up in the tagset and very curious about prompts. But I haven’t actually read this book, I’ve just heard of it.
The Caper Court series by Caro Fraser sounds interesting, too. It’s about a guy trying to become a lawyer who needs to fulfill a pupillage first, whatever the fuck that is, but apparently there’s gay people and intrigue, so I’m interested. I’ve started the first book.
Also, Zorro by Isabel Allende is nominated. I’ve never read this book but I’ve always wanted to because I love Zorro--the old TV show was one of my favorites as a kid. But I’ve never read a literary take on it.
If I can watch the Kdrama for Orange Marmalade, I’m interested in that too. I’ve only ever read the webmanga, didn’t know it was a live action now. It’s got vampires :) and high school drama.
So this rant was kind of unnecessary, but I just have a lot of feelings, guys, okay? Just...a lot of feelings...
