Wilbur Soot | Dadbur
Dadbur, dadbur, dadbur
These took like four days, and keeps getting deleted so there's more but I can't bring myself to rewrite them. Enjoy.
@starsyoubreaklikesugardust
As stated before, Wilbur could not hack being there during the actual birth, he is very supportive of you having whoever in there with you. You can bet that he is all in his head full of worry until he see the both of you. When he does he is in tears, like his two favorite girls are right there, healthy and okay.
He wants his daughter to be sleeping in your room for as long as possible, the crib is on his side of the bed, easy access for him when she wakes up in the middle of night. He does this because A) he’s worried something will happen in the middle of the night, and wants to be able to get to her as fast as possible and B) He wants to do everything for her as he can, the first couple of months are hard, both because a newborn is a lot and you’re still healing and trying to feel like a normal human person again.
He wants to keep his baby bubble as long as possible, he’s just in love with the sight of you and your baby, his baby, and he has this selfish desire to preserve that sight and feeling for himself (“No Tommy you can not come over-”). The moment that you suggest letting some people over he’s inviting everyone he knows. He loves to show off his little family, to anyone really, still doesn't love posting about it online (Wil and his weird sense of privacy).
GIrl scout dad (does the uk have girl scouts???). The most competitive person with it as well, he’s Planting trees? Science Projects? He’s doing it all.
He loves telling people stories about his daughter, If he’s waiting in line at the store, meeting a fan, or in an interview. He really can not help himself in interviews. “Yeah, with the new album we actually had my kid be the first person to listen to them, she loves them all.”Sometimes its just talking about arts and crafts that they’ve done recently.
He adores doing her hair, he’s really bad at it, but he loves that quality time. It becomes the main reason why he becomes a morning person. Once she starts going to school she goes to you to do it, but only after Wil has tried.
I also feel like she never left her “why” phase. Like you can overhear conversations that are just “What’s that” “A coffe maker” “What do?” “It makes Coffee” How” and it would just go on until either wil or you can’t explain it anymore.
Family trips, to science museums, petting zoos, aquariums, butterfly houses, and libraries. He really tries to make any outing memorable for his girls, because you both deserve the best.
When he leaves to go on tours, she always gives him her favorite stuffed animal, and tells him to take care of it. And he does, he’ll take out to any resturant or cafe or venue he’s in and takes pictures of it so you can show your daughter. He also picks up one stuffed animal every tour he’s on for her, and a bunch of small trinkets one from every city.
She likes her dad carrying her because he is 6 '5 and she likes to feel tall. She also expresses her desire to be tall by climbing on everything, couches, fridges, counters, tables, trees, honestly if you can name it she’ll get on top of it.
Wilbur likes to dance with her, no matter how old she is, he wants to dance with her. When she’s a baby, he likes swaying with her. When she’s up to his kneecaps he has her stand on his feet and does a poorly executed ballroom type dance. She gets enrolled in a dance class when she’s young and it’s one of his favorite activities to do with her.
She also likes to collect things with the both of you. Flowers mainly, she’ll always have someone press/preserve them. When she gets older she likes to send them to people with letters. She also likes to collect postcards and will demand that you go to the post office in every city you’re in.
He gets super into dress up, always gets proper outfits (Chefs uniforms, Princess dress, fFeather boas). He even gets his daughter to put makeup on him, this always comes with him making sure that she knows that she does not and will not ever need makeup and how it's only being used because it’s fun and pretty. He will always compliment the final look and make you get a picture of it.
He always hates when she has to go to the doctor's office with her. He gets really nervous, and is constantly sending you text messages about how it’s going and what the doctor is saying. Heaven forbid she gets sick while he’s on tour, he is constantly face time with you and he does make an effort to give her a shout out at every show. “This show tonight is for my daughter, who is unfortunately riddled with a really bad case of an achy tummy.”
There are several “official” recording of every song he has helped make, where in reality its just him holding her close to a mic as she babbles in babyish something that sorta sounds like the lyrics.
Wilbur can’t really cook, we know this, we know that he has bad taste buds, which means that he is no help in the kitchen. This being said he will absolutely hold his daughter on his hip, narating whatever it is that you are doing.
I am a firm believer that he grows a garden with his little family. Sunflowers, azaleas, whatever his two girls want. He’d be out there desperately trying to teach her how to plant flowers and grow a proper garden.

book review - ecotopia by ernest callenbach
Ecotopia, written by ernest callenbach in the 1970s, describes a world in which the land regions previously known as northern california, washington, and oregon secede from the rest of the united states and create their own nation, the nation of Ecotopia. the principles of sustainability and circular economy are central to this new nation.
here are my thoughts on some things covered in the book, i hope that this reaches someone else who's read it and we can share thoughts!
(this will include spoilers. however, the nature of the book is not a narrative, and is rather a presentation of ideas. therefore reading this post will not ruin the book for you if you choose to read it)
one of the greatest thought experiments Ecotopia undertakes is that of ideal urban planning. in that respect, the book is pretty cool! they hypothetical nation of Ecotopia describes San Francisco as a central city hub, from which spokes of public transport emerge and run to smaller city towns. these towns take the place of suburbs, which were razed during the country’s Independence / reconstruction era. (wooooo!!) public transport abounds and runs at a high speed of 30 mph, which is all you really need since the urban centers are so densely built and multi use. Between city towns are managed forests (actual forests! not monocultures) as well as natural land which has been allowed to restore itself.
people live in flexible communes that typically work together to produce something, whether that be a farming commune, fishing commune, artist communes, or business / science communes that invent things. everyone has a universal base income that is just minimal enough to reasonably get by, allowing people to pursue art or a risky startup without fear of dying. which i think is really cool! necessity breeds innovation yes but you need security too. work culture in Ecotopia is also vastly different, as the boundary between work and leisure and personal time is eroded, which may seem like a bad thing but the consequence of the UBI system means that most Ecotopians actually Like their work and choose to do it of their own free will. crazy huh.
houses are typically made of wood, which to me raised a suspicion flag, cause this is the Bay Area we’re talking about, which is Humid as Shit, and the Ecotopians have phased out paint due to it containing heavy metals. which good for them i guess but those houses are gonna rot lmfao. i took the liberty of imagining they are proofed with sealant made from the biodegradable, non petroleum based plastic the Ecotopians had developed and manufactured. while wood is the building material of choice, houses are also built from large tubes of insulated bioplastic, which are joined at the whim of the family or commune creating the house. (there are no architects, everyone builds their own houses themselves to suit their needs.) these houses are cheap and accessible, and zoning laws seem to be nonexistent, making homelessness a nonissue.
in terms of materials, everything in Ecotopia is renewable and has a full zero waste lifecycle. wood is the material of choice. the only metal Ecotopians use comes from scavenged cars and machinery of the pre seccession era. Ecotopians still manufacture plastic, but most kinds of it are fully biodegradable in a few days. when a lasting material is needed, a different type of plastic is used; this kind will not degrade until it is in full contact with soil. given how important disposable plastic is for applications such as research, i'm glad this was considered and accounted for in this book instead of throwing it off as a "we don't need plastic anymore kumbaya" kinda vibe.
culture wise, there is a lack of emotional restraint which the book’s narrator, a visitor from NYC, frequently comments on. hugs and physical affection between all relationships and genders are normalized. there also seems to be an insistence on small talk as a way to humanize those working “lesser skilled” jobs. honestly i found this a bit annoying, as i don’t think small talk is necessarily indicative of human connection, and that a truly emotionally attuned people would be okay with giving space when necessary. but i thought it was nice to acknowledge that all people are people, even while working “subservient” jobs.
ok so those were the things i liked.
criticism #1.
WILLIAM WESTON STOP BEING A FUCKING MISOGYNIST CHALLENGE
alternatively:
ERNEST CALLENBACH WRITE ONE (1) WOMAN WHO ISN’T A SEX OBJECT CHALLENGE
NO, THE WOMAN WHO YOU DESCRIBED AS UNATTRACTIVE WHO ALSO HAPPENS TO BE IN A POSITION OF POWER DOES NOT COUNT
god jesus christ
over the course of his adventures, journalist William Weston encounters many fellows (men) and new friends whom he talks around the fire with (men). he also encounters Marissa, a beautiful wild woman, exotic and mysterious who runs through the forest, cares deeply for trees, stares into his soul with her plain face and round dark eyes, and has sex with him twenty four hours three hundred sixty five days a year.
he also encounters Linda, an attractively sarcastic yet caring nurse, who nurses his injuries, jacks him off, and consumes him with thoughts of when he “will be healed enough to fuck her properly”. (direct quote)
in addition to the misogyny, there appears to be a fair amount of gender essentialism in Ecotopian society, something I found disappointing. Ecotopian clothes are sharply gendered. (from my understanding of Ecotopian values, i’d expect everyone to be wearing skirts due to the ease of manufacture and resulting ease of movement.) women are described to have an “air of fertility” (yes, actually). the governing party is made up of women, due to womens’ “natural competency regarding cooperation and diplomacy rather than competition”. the only sport in the country, the ritual war games, is barred to women. (it’s actually remarked later in the book that in Ecotopian psychology offices, it is often women who come in with issues of untamed aggression, and attributes it to their exclusion from the games. i wonder what a solution could be 🤔) thankfully work is not gendered, but it appears the social spheres of men and women rarely intersect, as Weston socializes and discusses ideas with a fair amount of men, and no women. perhaps for the better, as he’d be too distracted trying to fuck them to have a discussion of any substance.
queer pairings are also mentioned offhand, but they serve the purpose of emphasizing the Ecotopian's open attitudes towards sex and intimacy. queerness is treated as a sexual quirk rather than as an orientation.
in addition to the disappointing sexism / heterosexism, there's a good amount of racism. different races live segregated. although this is a conscious choice by the inhabitants, it still strikes as somewhat odd that there wouldn't be a way for humans to maintain their culture while living in an integrated society. many of the barriers to race equality in our current system are abolished in Ecotopia; the cheapness of the bioplastic houses makes it accessible for anyone to own a house anywhere, and the ease with which people can start their own enterprises reduces employment barriers significantly. therefore i'd expect integration between races to be a significant achievement of the Ecotopians. the writing itself is also racist. callenbach makes distinctions while describing the cultures of the nonwhite populations that make it clear that white is the default of Ecotopia, and all other cultures are side notes. also, callenbach makes no mention of an Ecotopian prison system (an aspect of society that no doubt merits analysis) until he mentions the Black community. sir what is up with that 🤨
there's also a lot to be said of callenbach's treatment of Indigenous ideas. the Ecotopians take a lot of inspiration from classic Indigenous principles, such as living in balance with the earth's natural resources and respecting nonhuman life, and Indigenous clothing styles. however, this feels rather appropriative rather than appreciative, and there are no actual Indigenous characters in the book. i would expect that such an empathetic society which takes direct principles from Indigenous culture would appreciate and honor the Indigenous people within that society rather than just shamelessly taking their culture, especially given the context that Ecotopians are ex citizens of the united states, the country which caused the Indigenous communities in that area so much harm.
overall, i think this book's strengths lie in its rethinking of what society could be like without work as its central focus. i love the UBI system, the reduced work week, and the attitude of work as something to enjoy rather than something to get over with. i also love that the nation's economic fall wasn't skipped over. i think its important to realize that many policies which would improve human health and quality of life would also lower our GDP, and that maybe that's perfectly fine. maybe human lives matter more than how rich a nation is. despite all these strengths, however, the sexism and racism cannot be overlooked; they made me almost put the book down several times. this book is clearly a product of its time, written by a white man. in keeping with good critical thinking practices, its important to recognize what ideas are good to keep and what needs to be thrown out.
tldr: great ideas about an alternative structure for society, unfortunately sexist and racist as well. 6/10

For Aurelia
2. What kind of skills did they learn in childhood and adolescence?
16. What's something they'd spend significant money on for themself?
For Laurent:
4. How often do they dance? Do they dance by themselves? Significant dancing moments, if any?
27. Have their morals changed over time or stayed relatively the same?
Thank you for the ask 💜 from this ask game.
Meh, it's gonna be long *snips*
For Aurelia
2. What kind of skills did they learn in childhood and adolescence?
As a child, she learned the normal things children in a major city with access to schools would learn — reading, writing, calculating, basics of history and some natural sciences (don't come at me with worldbuilding). She already had bad vision, so she struggled with some things, and when their parents got a third child, they kind of... dropped her.
They didn't bother teaching her any but the most basic life skills. In a way, they're still convinced she won't make it on her own — and she's 44, hasn't lived at home in over 20 years, and runs her own store. On the rare occasions she visits home, they still ask her if she's found a man yet to take care of her 🙃
When she was around 12, she began to hang out at a candy store and befriended the owner, Rachel. Rachel let her help for fun at first but quickly realized that Aurelia really loved what she did. So she began to teach her for real, and When Aurelia became of age, Rachel let her move in.
Finally out of her parents' house, she grew much more confident. She found a group of other blind people who shared their knowledge with her, she learned how to navigate the city, and how to live on her own. When Rachel's health began to decline, Aurelia took over more and more responsibility, ultimately inheriting everything.
The latest thing she learned is this world's equivalent of braille. It started to spread widely a few years back, and since she now has barely any usable vision left, she gladly embraced it.
16. What's something they'd spend significant money on for themself?
She loves her store, but I don't think any kind of rare ingredient or machine she doesn't have yet is really in the spirit of this question 😂 She totally would.
For herself, there is little she needs or wants. She inherited everything from Rachel, store, living quarters, furniture and all, and sees little reason to replace anything. She likes to buy nice clothes, but she also would not spend *significant* money on them.
She would probably pay people do to some things for her. At the moment, she pays to has her laundry done and her store windows cleaned, but she would gladly get someone to do all paperwork for her, clean everything else, or perhaps cook, because she doesn't like cooking. She would also love to hire and teach an apprentice, to keep the art of candy making alive and have a pair of helping hands around.
If she didn't have a contact in the Order of Fire, she might buy some of the assistive devices they make. That would probably take a while longer though; many are still prototypes and it's unlikely she would have access to one to figure out what she likes and can use if Cecelia didn't keep her updated with the newest developments.
For Laurent
4. How often do they dance? Do they dance by themselves? Significant dancing moments, if any?
He dances occasionally. Yvan refuses to show up at any pompous parties, so Laurent sometimes accompanies Cedric. He did learn it to fit in, or perhaps to get close to someone for information, it's been a while. Whatever the reason, he realized he liked it, though he prefers smaller occasions to the grand balls of Caldeia's elite.
There's something about the rhythm and pattern of steps and movements he likes, and it gives him a reliable framework of established rituals to interact with people oh no, please can one of my chars stay NT for once.
Significant dancing moments, you say? *giggle*
27. Have their morals changed over time or stayed relatively the same?
He has been friends with Cedric for over 20 years. Let's just say, with time, I think all their morals changed. In their 20s, they were much more idealistic, but they quickly figured out that being good gets you nowhere.
I think at the core, there's still the fact that they would never willingly hurt innocents—it's just that their definition of hurt and innocents has become, uh, flexible. Stealing some small things from rich people won't really hurt them, and someone who's a threat to them or their friends isn't innocent 😅
I would love to say that they're helping those in need and shit like that, but while that sometimes happens, their primary goal is their own lifestyle and the lives of those close to them.

On the classification of Pokemon
I'm going to make this as simple as I can. I can't figure out how to embed links in this site so I can't cite my sources but you guys have access to search engines.
Pokemon are creatures who display strange, and phenomenal powers. Some can use fire, others electricity, and others psychic powers. A lot of people mistakenly believe that this is what defines a Pokemon as a Pokemon- It's abilities and typing. This is incorrect.
In 1925, Professor Westwood of Celadon University in Kanto noticed the Primeape he was observing shrank down and became small enough to sleep inside his glasses case. Until this point, Pokemon had solely been referred to as 'monsters', due to their strange and unknown abilities. However, Professor Westwood, inspired by this Primeape, did research on the Primeape, and invented the modern Pokeball soon after- The writing of the time even refers to the early Pokeballs as 'Monster Balls', due to the 'poke-' prefix not existing yet.
When the storage of Pokemon became easy and friendship between human and Pokemon became easier, they became known as Pocket Monsters, and science and study of the newly-classified Pokemon blossomed.
But if you will rewind for a moment... A Primeape shrank down. However, Primeapes cannot learn Minimize. What happened?
All Pokemon are actually defined by that ability. When scared or injured, a Pokemon will shrink down to a much smaller size in an attempt to avoid the danger- This is why most Pokemon prefer tall grass as their environment, so that if they are defeated, they will simply shrink down into the grass and become difficult to find. This is also why trainers who battle wild Pokemon no longer see the wild Pokemon after defeating it- The Pokemon has shrunk down and hid itself.
This act of shrinking is, however, usually a reflexive thing. The move Minimize is nothing more than an occurrence of being able to perform this feat at will.
This is similarly why beings from other dimensions such as the Ultra Beasts, or from outer space such as Deoxys, are classified as Pokemon despite not being from our biosphere at all. They possess the common characteristic of being able to shrink as a reflex to avoid danger, and thus are classified as Pokemon.
The ability to use any other powers are irrelevant to the classification. Humans, as an example, are known to develop psychic powers on occasion, or train themselves in martial arts to match those of a Fighting-type. Some deep-sea fish are able to emit electric currents. None of these examples are Pokemon, because they lack the characteristic of shrinking when in danger.
Thus, conclusively, humans are not Normal-type Pokemon, and if I ever see someone try to defend that stance I will spontaneously learn Mega Kick and demonstrate it on their kneecaps. Understood?

Class Feature Friday: Bombard Fighting Style (Soldier Fighting Style)
Tumblr media
(art by Alexander Moskalenko on Artstation)
In a wild and wooly science-fantasy setting which takes more than a little inspiration from westerns and other genres of fiction, there’s still a few things that you can only get in such a futuristic setting, and that is, looking at really big guns.
Ok, sure, you can get that in other media too, but where else but sci-fi do you get railguns built for personal use, or plasma cannons, or a rapid-fire laser cannon built to emulate the same effect as the heaviest machine guns, but in photon-laced form?
Regardless of your stance on violence, there is something awe-inspiring about seeing powerful weapons in action, a demonstration of mortal ingenuity in creating something that can leave a very literal mark on the landscape and even the odds against beings that would otherwise outmatch us.
Admittedly, there is an aspect of the “gun nut” fandom that gets a little, well, icky. But we can’t make blanket judgements on people based on what they like. That would be like judging someone for having a sword collection, or for having lurid art on the walls of their home.
In any case, today we’re looking at a fighting style for soldier which is focused on big guns and big explosions. More specifically, the bombard style is all about big guns that cause big explosions, or otherwise unleash powerful attacks. If you’re looking for one that focuses on the “relentless onslaught of constant firepower” side of big guns, you’ll probably want to look into the bullet rain style, which we’ll be covering on the next go around.
In any case, these soldiers are most likely exactly what their class name implies, actual soldiers, since those are the most likely to have access to this kind of firepower. However, mercenary companies, private contractors, and explorers in hostile regions of space can all make use of such training, to say nothing of those who retired from any of those careers and took their guns with them (or acquired new ones). Heck, some of them might even be self-trained enthusiasts, though their reasons for doing so may vary.
In any case, if you’re looking to play a soldier, and big guns are your thing, you probably have at least considered this style, for it offers some impressive and bombastic rewards.
Though most prefer heavier fare, every bombard masters the arts of thrown explosives as well, able to pitch them further than most due to an intimate familiarity with their heft. What’s more, they can improvise an explosive device from leftover materials with a few minutes of work, meaning as long as they have a little time, they always have at least one grenade on hand, albeit an unstable one that most shops would not accept.
A steady hand is needed to make best use of heavy weapons, and by leveraging that strength and focus, they can squeeze out a little bit of extra harm on foes, though naturally this only really works with automatic, explosive, or unwieldy weaponry.
The impact of these weapons can also leave foes deafened, stumbling, or otherwise debilitated as well, and these gunners can leverage that when using explosive and conical blasting weaponry.
Their knowledge of where to place an explosive to maximize harm and minimize collateral is also impressive, making it harder for foes to avoid and minimizing danger to themselves.
Finally, the most powerful of them can scatter foes with their big guns, knocking them away from themselves or an explosive central point.
If you’re considering this style, you’re likely wanting to play with the biggest, most unwieldy guns in the game. Now, due to the size of such weaponry, unless you’re using power armor you’re unlikely to be holding all of the different types of guns that can make use of this style at once, but it should be fairly obvious that this style is all about playing the role normally performed by blasty mages but with flamethrowers, rocket launchers, and other exotic weapons of considerable size and firepower. Naturally, this style pairs well with armor storm, bullet rain, mine menace, and shock and awe, and you’re probably going to be building to heap on damage and debilitating effects on your foes. Have fun.
I feel like it’s very hard to not have a smile on your face when wielding a really big weapon unless you’re going through some stuff, so I can imagine that a lot of characters with this combat style really, really like their job. That being said, it takes all types to fill a battalion, as they say, and the silent type that lets their guns do the talking is just as much an archetype as they guy whose booming laugh and lust for life is only drowned out by their weaponry.
While it’s tempting to assume that the crystal-crafting psacynoids rely entirely on magic, they have their fair share of technological marvels too, though many are hybrid devices utilizing the magically-reactive crystals as a core. Mercenaries pay well for heavy lasers crafted using these crystals, but they regulate their sale quite thoroughly. As such, when a shipment of the weapons goes missing, the party are hired on to investigate.
An insectile mantis-like predator with curious ability to put their molecules out of phase for offensive and defensive purposes, has invaded the mining colony of Ackban, preying upon the miners. It always retreats when it takes sufficient harm, so they have not been able to finish off the mordaghast. A specialize with heavy weaponry, however, might be exactly what is needed to pierce it’s phasic defenses.
The war in the Algon sector is not going well for the natives, and their forces find themselves repeatedly pinned down by withering onslaughts of heavy firepower from the invader’s fire teams. A change in tactics are in order, and if one can’t be found soon, death will come for them all.

Note
I've seen your posts about size not being significant in fights and an under 5 foot tall person can reasonably fight someone over 6 feet in melee. But I'm writing sci fi and I have alien races where some adults are 3 feet tall and others are 8 feet tall? Is size now important? It's realistic sci-fi. What I mean is, like I've never questioned Yoda fighting humans but because of the non realistic Force so I bought it. But I do kinda question pure martial arts.
So, when you're comparing two humans, a foot of height difference doesn't significantly affect their reach. Humans are all equivalently unstable (roughly speaking) (we're all bipeds), so the difference of a few inches of limb length. Outside of very specific edge cases, this doesn't have a lot of combat implications. Basically, anything you do with your hands will bring you inside your opponent's strike range.
However, we're not talking about two humans, which means a lot of the assumptions, based on the fighters having similar physiology, are no longer relevant. Limb length can't be reliably tied to height (overall), nor can the characteristics of those limbs. A fight between an octopus and horse is going to look very different from a fight between a Wookie and an Ewok.
There's a serious problem in popular science fiction, with the appearance of alien life. Because (most) science fiction series and films relies on actors wearing prosthetics to represent the aliens, we get a lot of scifi where the vast majority of aliens are just humans but with funny rubber foreheads. This isn't as pronounced in literary science fiction, but the trend is still there.
There's an understandable kind of narcissism in looking at yourself and saying, “well, I look normal,” but, to put it very bluntly, humans are goddamn weird as a species on a number of fronts. Including our physiology. If you're looking at, “realistic sci-fi,” the odds of encountering another bipedal, roughly human looking, race are almost non-existent.
Star Trek explicitly responded to this idea, though it took them over 25 years to address, with an advanced alien race that seeded genetic data across the galaxy millions of years ago, resulting in manyraces that looked suspiciously like humans in makeup. This entire justification doesn't stand up well to scrutiny, but at least an attempt was made.
The standardized bipedal template isn't inherently a problem from the perspective of presenting aliens as other people. However, actually encountering a species in outer space with two two arms, two legs, a head with eyes, ears, a nose, and a mouth in a familiar configuration, is a genere convention, and makes no sense from an exobiology (or xenobiology) perspective.
It's worth remembering that humans are genetically coded to be xenophobic to near humans. Specifically, I'm talking about the, “uncanny valley,” and it usually comes up in relation to attempts to create human simulacra, particularly with humanoid animatronics. It is very likely this instinct would kick in hard with near human aliens, and may kick in with divergent human species. (Which is to say, humans who have spent enough generations on other worlds to result in physiological adaptations. It's also quite possible that the uncanny valley is, in fact, the result of now extinct near human divergent species, such as Neanderthal.) Or, put another way, being in the same room as a Vulcan would be absolutely terrifying on a genetic level.
So, do the height differences matter in this situation? I'm not sure they do. If the example is two, roughly similar bi-pedal fighters, then yes, if only because of reach. However, when we're talking about two alien races, we really don't have a baseline, and that throws off all our assumptions.

Okay ive been working on this setting since high school and its been almost entirely contained in my brain so its hard to actually impart information about people in it but ill try.
In one of the regions, The Hatchetlands (named after the fact a mythical hatchet was used to cut down the Forest [there's a capital F Forest and its bad to be in] to make room for civilization), there is an Elder-Scrolls-Empire style government called the Council attempting to unify the region under their rule. They don't have much competition but it isn't a region that's easy to maintain an iron rule over. There are a few reasons for the Council's supremacy, but a major one is that they have an incredibly advanced Division of Magical Sciences. The Division of Magical Sciences is, on the surface, a way to study how magic actually works, since its mostly only been taught as an art form rather than a science. Theres a lot more to this whole deal but ill get way off topic.
In reality the ultimate goal of the Division of Magical Sciences is something which would essentially turn the plane world into a magical-energy generating machine in a sort of end-of-eva way, at the behest of a otherworldly benefactor (again something that would take too much time to get into). Myella, whos original name was uh well i havent though of one but it wasnt myella, was originally the Gendo of this situation, eningeering a way to connect the thoughts and emotions of all sentient beings. She was killed in a coup within the Division of Magical Sciences by those who wanted to wrest it away from the Council.
Her body was dumped in the woods, where the lingering magic her research involved mingled with some fungi that had begun eating the corpse. Because of the connective nature of said research magic, the fungi were able to link their mycelium together (do you get the name now) into a functioning nervous system for the corpse, effectively Weekend-At-Bernie's-ing her. They can puppet her limbs around very effectively, though things like speech and digestion are beyond them. They do eat corpses, though it's mostly just how mushrooms usually do it. Myella has some access to their hosts's memories, abilities, and feelings, but for the most part they are an entirely new person.
Beyond being a mushroom colony piloting a half decayed meatsuit, the spores also maintain that connective magic, to the point that the mushrooms are able to sense their surroundings by spreading them, as a blindsense of sorts. This lends itself to a fighting style, which is basically never being hit by anything and hopefully something good happens (think vash).
They are able to expand beyond the single body, growing the colony, though distance ends up turning mushrooms left behind back to normal.
They can also use them to connect emotionally with people who spend enough time inhaling the spores, which allows for basic communication with constant companions. Eventually this ability is going to lead to them being the center of the end-of-eva situation their host had ended up planning, but thats in the future. At the start of their adventure, Myella is mostly just like a child exploring the world and discovering what everything is. So who exactly they are is something yet to be determined.
Sorry if this was a bit too much lol

to start out, i have to give a summary of cas's Deal™ . they're a ghost who died due to very unfortunate circumstances, and found themself haunting a horrible science facility. eventually getting out and finding a new, better found family and loved ones and such. generally a very fantastical but traumatic affair.
JAIDEN, however, is... normal! just a normal trans gal going to normal liberal arts college with normal problems. she and cas were former internet friends/penpals/mutuals/etc when they were in ~middle-high school. think like.. from the ages of 13-16 online.
during that time period, cas was.. not doing well. having very real mental health problems, publicly on their socials and such. jaiden made herself out to be their psuedo-therapist, because she had one of those fledgling internet crushes and wanted to do anything to help them
HOWEVER; one day, due to their death, cas went completely radio silent. of course jaiden was emotionally wrecked by this. for years (~5 years to be specific) she would send their inactive blog messages .. almost daily, giving updates and saying how much she missed them
and . well. one day cas (who... doesnt remember much of that period of their life) managed to regain access to their old accounts. and UH OH! accidentally liked one of jaiden's posts, tipping her off that they're... around
jaiden was confused but ecstatic, initially not believing the magical circumstances surrounding cas's new (after)life, but soon found herself.. almost obsessive, in a slightly jealous way?
she doesnt have bad intentions, of course. but what do you do, what do you say, when you find yourself surrounded by things, people, far grander than you could ever be? how could you even cope with knowing the person you put so much time and effort into keeping alive is dead but still doing better than you?
and of course theres still that unrequited crush lingering from their teens.
TLDR; unrequited yuri make me crazy

hii, i want to get into star trek but i dont know where to start
Do you have a particular episode or series you recommend for newbies?
Star Trek: Lower Decks is a pretty good way to get into the series imo. It will introduce you to a lot of the concepts of the series, but with a different style and tone. There's a lot of references to the rest of the franchise, but to those who have only seen lower decks they mostly read as just worldbuilding to make the world seem larger than just one ship.
If you want to know what Star Trek is really like as a whole, I recommend checking out Star Trek: The Next Generation, season one episode one, Encounter at Farpoint. It's not the best Star Trek episode, but it introduces the characters of TNG and some series-long plot arcs, and its plot is pretty typical of the kind of high-concept science fiction the franchise is known for.
Most of the series was designed for syndication in a pre-streaming environment where you don't need to watch it in order if you don't want to. You can kind of skip around if you want. One valid way of watching star trek is just to watch all the pilot episodes of the pre-streaming Trek (to get to know the characters and the premise) and then skip around within each series.
All of the modern star trek shows made for streaming should be watched in order, and Star Trek Deep Space Nine absolutely should be watched in order. DS9 also has the best pilot episode. And is probably the best series; although I feel like it's best enjoyed when you already have a familiarity with this universe through watching other star trek.
appendix: description of the premise of each star trek series, in order of release date.
TOS: Star Trek (1966-1969). Also known as Star Trek (The Original Series). The show follows the first three years out of the five year mission of the United Federation of Planets starship Enterprise under command of Captain Kirk and his science officer Commander Spock, and the doctor "Bones" McCoy, to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life, and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!
TAS: Star Trek: the Animated Series (1973-1974). A cartoon in the animation style/quality of the likes of Scooby Doo. The show follows the final two years of the five year mission, but very quirky and even lower budget.
Star Trek movies 1-6 (1979-1991) continue the story of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and the crew of the Enterprise. People say the odd numbered movies are worse, but I like all of them. Star Trek IV (the one with the whales) is easily the best one--it's a movie in the style of some of the more 'hijinksy' episodes of TOS.
TNG: Star Trek: The Next Generation. (1987-1994). Nearly 100 years after Kirk's Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard commands the Enterprise-D, an almost city-sized starship going even further and faster than before, with advanced tech like matter replicators and holodeck simulator rooms. His crew includes an empath, an android, a blind pilot with an accessibility aid, starfleet's first Klingon, and idk i guess a couple of regular humans I guess.
DS9: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999). Commander Sisko begrudgingly takes command of a run down space station that had been built as a slave camp during the lizard-nazi occupation of the previously peaceful and spiritual Bajor. The occupation is over and the station now belongs to the Bajorans under Starfleet administration. His second officer is a Bajoran terrorist. The rest of the crew includes the cringiest best doctor in starfleet, a trans woman with a worm in her belly, a slime cop, and a cutthroat capitalist running the station's bar. And who can forget O'brien, the former transporter chief of the Enterprise-D and the Most Normal Guy In The Universe. Things get complicated when, in episode one, a uniquely stable wormhole to the other side of the galaxy opens up, and suddenly this backwater becomes a bustling frontier.
VOY: Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001). A state-of-the-art but otherwise pretty unremarkable starship, Voyager, sets out from DS9 on a quick mission to capture some (mostly human) rebels/terrorists. However, both the terrorist ship and Voyager get transported to the other side of the galaxy (not the same side as the wormhole from DS9, although that would be convenient). Facing a 70 year return trip, they must learn to work together to survive in a harsh part of the galaxy. And if they do a little exploration of strange new worlds while they're at it, that's fine too. Captain Janeway commands her intrepid crew of humans, aliens; terrorists and by-the-books officers. there's also a really cool ex-zombie-cyborg with autism but she doesn't appear until like season 4. Also a brilliant holographic doctor who isn't pleased about the fact that he can be turned on and off at the flick of a switch.
Star Trek movies 7-10 (1994-2002) are the The Next Generation tie-ins. Generations is kinda bad, First Contact is the best one.
ENT: Enterprise (later Star Trek: Enterprise) (2001-2005). 100 years before Kirk's Enterprise, Earth is a client state of the Vulcans, and humans are tiring of the Vulcans' watchful eye. After a diplomatic incident, Captain Archer commands the 'first' Enterprise, the NX-01, on humanity's very first deep-space expedition. Though he'd be a LOT happier if the Vulcans hadn't insisted upon putting a Vulcan Science Officer on the bridge. Phlox, the alien doctor, is one of Star Trek's best characters. Trip, the chief engineer and certified Florida man, is also a delight.
Star Trek movies 11-13 (2009-2016) are the alternate universe "Kelvin Timeline" movies, which take place in a more action-oriented, star-wars-like version of the The Original Series time period. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are back, but played by younger actors. Star Trek (2009) is kind of okay if you like action movies that have nothing to do with what Star Trek is actually about, Into Darkness is kind of bad, and Star Trek Beyond was actually delightful.
side note: the Kelvin Timeline movies are often considered a "reboot," but they're arguably less of a reboot than the Discovery/Strange New Worlds timeline, since there is an in-universe REASON for the kelvin timeline to exist parallel to the television timeline; whereas DSC & SNW just rewrite history and visual design for no reason and expect us to believe it was always this way despite previous callbacks to the TOS era in the franchise generally being faithful to the events and appearance of the original series itself.
DIS (DSC): Star Trek: Discovery (2017-). First in a franchise soft-reboot. The visuals are all different, and though they have tried to imply it's the same universe/timeline/continuity as everything that came before… it is best interpreted as a reboot in a slightly different timeline. The story of a federation starship with a top-secret mushroom-powered teleportation drive, just a decade before Kirk's Enterprise. Or the story of how starfleet's first mutineer learned to trust other people. I don't like this one very much so it's possible im mischaracterizing it.
PIC: Star Trek Picard. (2020-). A Character Study on the elderly Jean-Luc Picard, as he goes on a quest to find the daughter of his late android friend before something terrible happens to her. This one is horrifically violent for some reason and is also horrifyingly ableist in season 2. Season 3 will be a sort of The Next Generation Cast Reunion.
LOW: Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020-). An adult-style cartoon which reimagines Star Trek as a workplace sitcom. On one of Starfleet's low-tier workhorse starships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, on the lower decks, are four nerds who love their jobs (one of them would never admit it though and would be offended if you called her a nerd.) Bradward Boimler, the rule-follower, Beckett Mariner, the badass free-spirit who is clearly suffering from burnout, D'vana Tendi, the delightfully optimistic nurse and scientist, and Samanthan Rutherford, the cyborg engineer who loves crawlin' around in the tubes! This one is sort of star trek self-parody, but in a good way. I love most Star Trek, but as different as this one is, it's my favorite.
PRODIGY: Star Trek: Prodigy (2021-). A 3D-animated cartoon (for all ages, this time). Four alien teenagers, a large alien child, and some kind of goo monster, steal an incredibly fast prototype federation starship, the Protostar. Now, none of them have ever actually heard of the Federation, or… know how to pilot a starship, but they are guided through it by a hologram based on Voyager's Captain Janeway. It starts with a very Star Wars-like tone and gradually shifts to being more and more like Star Trek as the season progresses--which makes sense in the context of the story. SNW: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022-). A soft reboot of TOS based on Captain Pike's appearance in Discovery. (Pike was the captain of the Enterprise just before Kirk was, in the TOS episodes The Cage and The Menagerie). This one has some pretty bad ableism in it, but it's not as overt as PIC's. This one really is just, like, as close to "more of regular star trek" as it gets. Though the tone does feel very different to Star Trek TOS and TNG.

I redid Levi's profile to update it a little ~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
General informations
Name: Levi Farlune
Based on: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Age: 20 y.o.
Birthday: December 31st
Heigh: 187 cm (177 cm inner Levi)
Homeland: Nocturne Town
Dorm: Terrovania (by @celiica)
Class: 4 - C
Best subject: biology
Club: Science Club
Hobby: Doing chemical experiments, reading books on medicine and anatomy, observing natural phenomena and studying them
Favorite food: Chicken Tikka Masala (Chocolate ice-cream Inner Levi)
Least Favorite food: Sodas (coffee Inner Levi)
Personality and Background:
Levi was born into a wealthy family in Nocturne Town. From childhood his vocation seems clear: he loves science with all his heart, he is curious and loving towards his neighbor, he seems the perfect ideal of a future doctor, one of those doctors who love his profession and his patients. His parents, both professors and people of culture, are very proud of their son. Still, things are never perfect.
Neither he nor the family nor ever talk about the first time the other Levi was born, yet a terrible chaos occurred that day. The boy had not yet entered adolescence and the one inside him was capable of disconcerting things. Despite this, Levi seemed not to be frightened by this and indeed, over time he learned to control it.
It is not clear who Inner Levi is (as he calls him), if he is really a separate entity or if he is a second personality of Levi, in any case, although he rarely manifests himself, when this happens also Levi’s physical characteristics change: he is slightly shorter than normal, his face takes on more childish features and becomes more expressive.
Levi, in his normal state, is a mature and kind-hearted person. He dedicates his passion to others and tries to support anyone whenever he can. He is a person with whom it is pleasant to spend time in company, he is open to new experiences and all new acquaintances. He could get carried away a little too much in talking about medicine, if it happens just point it out to him. He might be arrogant at times when it comes to medical arts and chemistry, but he doesn’t do it intentionally. In general, he is a reliable and quiet person who can be trusted.
His relationship with Inner Levi is in truth not a relationship. He sees him as a kid, a problem that existed when he was younger but is now easy to deal with through medicine. Even if he convinces himself of this, this is not always the case. When he manifests, Inner Levi has a deeply immature, disquieting personality. He is not necessarily bad, but he has no moral criteria, and he does what he likes when he likes, making himself capable of friendly gestures as well as extreme cruelty. He’s dangerous, believe me. If Levi is a self-controlled and self-possessed person, Inner Levi is a slave to his emotions to such an extent that even Ciaran is scared of him (and that Ciaran is scared is indicative…). This Levi also appears to be more childish than his counterpart whom he rather scornfully calls “big brother”.
Unique magic: “Inside the beast” or “You are the beast”
It’s the same spell only used differently by Levi and Inner Levi.
Basically Levi can “take in” another person for a limited period of time, usually not reaching the minute. In this sense, he has access to all the physical, intellectual and magical abilities of the person, and in the same way the person themselves can possess the body of Levi, as long as he allows it. The difference between the two personalities is that Levi uses the spell mostly for defense, while Inner Levi thinks more about a methodology of attack and exploitation of the person.
Trivia:
-Levi is right-handed, while Inner Levi is left-handed.
-Levi is extremely fascinated by butterflies.
-He always uses a single shampoo to wash his hair, so they always smell like orange.
-The scars on his face belong to a single long wound.
-Levi takes a medicine every morning and evening to avoid the emergence of Inner Levi.
-His voice is very calm and warm.
-He happened to taste Jamil’s cooking and it has been his favorite ever since.
-He has a close friendship with Kalida and Aida in particular.
- His name means "united"
- His favorite place is his underground laboratory

Bouncing off the prior post about video games and day 1 patches, I’d like to drop a conjugate take: developers need to patch fewer bugs.
I don’t mean stuff that’s obviously game breaking or that ruins a casual run of the game - if it’s something that harms or disrupts the experience for a normal person making normal gameplay decisions, it should go. But stuff that takes elaborate setups or extreme corner cases, that it’s almost certain no one will do by accident? That should stay.
I’m not just talking from a speedrunning perspective (although that certainly informs my stance), but also from the perspective of games as an art form. Wild, “how do we do that” glitch hunting is an art and science of its own, that impacts how a lot of people interact with the medium. Some bugs - Pokemon’s MissingNo, SM64′s backwards long jump, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) - are iconic parts of the culture around the game. Others, such as cancels in fighting games, became so iconic they were deliberately incorporated into the genre going forward.
Glitch hunting is also an educational tool. Things like the Super Mario Bros. 3 wrong warp require detailed knowledge of the underlying software and electronics, and demonstrate that knowledge in a way that simply writing or running software as intended cannot.
In fact, I’d go so far as to say that in the ideal world, bugs shouldn’t be patched, barring a few specific cases, in rough order of priority:
Bugs that risk damage to hardware (”halt and catch fire”) or permanent (defined here as not easily reversed by a non-technical user) damage to software or data.
Bugs that risk privilege escalation or access to sensitive user data. (I am assuming an ideal world where users already have access to full privileges on their own devices on an as-needed basis.)
Crashes, hangs, memory leaks, and race conditions. No, modern developers usually don’t bother patching the latter two. Yes, they should.
Bugs which are likely to cause significant disruption to a user engaging in expected or ordinary gameplay patterns. While both “significant” and “expected/ordinary” are necessarily subjective, I’d (non-comprehensively) exclude things like frame-perfect tricks, save data manipulation, or multi-step AI/RNG manipulation from the “expected/ordinary” criterion.
I call first two points “harmful” bugs, and the latter two “disruptive”. If something is neither harmful (posing risk to the device, software, or user) nor disruptive (causing interruptions or frustrations for users playing the game normally), patching it just takes away something from the people who are seeking it out for fun.

Sometimes thing happen both quickly and slowly at the same time, dumping you out the other end feeling dazed and confused.
In the grand scheme, this is something that started back in high school. In the 90s. HTML was still new. Netscape Navigator was the pinnacle of what the internet could do. And I wanted to make webpages. I taught myself HTML an hour at a time on library computers and in the computer labs at school. CSS hadn’t really been adopted yet.
I ran circles around my high school HTML teacher, because he was accustomed to teaching hardware and not coding. He was learning along with the rest of us.
But given the era, web design wasn’t seen as a real job and normal programming was said to be difficult. With no access to it, I foolishly listened to the people who said programming was all math and science and super boring, and kinda let it go. I still did some HTML here and there, learned CSS pretty okay, picked up a bit of PHP, but mostly didn’t expand much.
Fast forward 20 years. I’ve dropped out of college 4 times, having attempted 4 different majors (general art, theater design, architecture, graphic design) and find myself unemployed. With a hyperfixation on a few projects, I get it in my head to give college one last try. Just so I can learn PHP and databases to make a project happen. But the degree included Python. An actual programming language. I dreaded it, having recalling all the insistence that it was boring math stuff.
After the first week or 2, I found out I loved it. I had to stop myself from rushing too far ahead and almost immediately the teacher knew me well. Mostly as “Does anyone besides Colin have the answer?” When the class was over, I wanted more.
I finished that class about 6 months ago. I’ve finished another term after that, and I’m nearly done with the 2nd. A lot of that eagerness has faded. Not for lack of wanting more, but out of sheer disappointment. I’d thought the degree would give me all I needed to get a job. But it’s really just a loose collection of introductory classes that add up to not a whole lot.
A week or so ago, I started rooting around for what else I needed to learn. Looking at the things jobs required. Looking into videos on what it takes. I ended up with a big pile of stuff I needed to do, but with no clear way of getting into it properly.
Yesterday, I asked the teacher of that Python class for advice on where to learn more. I half expected him to suggest going to one of the universities in the area. But instead, he linked me just to the computer science section of EdX.
Free online classes, full classes. Mainly from Harvard. With an option to pay to actually get grades and proof of completing it. They even offered financial assistance. In a whim I gathered up a few classes that looked good and put in for financial aid. I expected to get rejected, cause who’s gonna listen to a sob story about being flat broke at almost 40 and “I promise I won’t drop out this time.”
They responded in less than 24 hours. I got access to 3 Ivy League classes (yes, I know it’s not the same as actually attending the school) for under $50 out of pocket.
And that’s how 2 nights in a row I was devouring completely voluntary lectures on coding at 2am.
If you’re really passionate about something, don’t let it go because of what people who aren’t interested in it say. They don’t know what they’re talking about.
It doesn’t hurt that in this case, it’s reasonable I could end up with a really good salary at the end. But that’s more of a cherry on top. I’ve worked this hard for 2 decades on stuff that left me broke, so my brain isn’t exactly money motivated.

Hey Dreams :D Happy STS ~
If you were magically transported into Tears of Iron OR Sky of Shards with all of your memories from this life,,, who would you be? what would you do? would you live out your life without getting into trouble? Would you find your main characters? Would you enroll in the academy? Anyone you would seek out and talk to? (Sorry if this is a weird question 😂)
@bloodlessheirbyjacques ✨❤️
Haha that's a very interesting question 😂
I'm living in universe a lot through Skye herself, so if we were two seperate people I would go seek her out in the academy. I would probably visit one of her presentations about her ongoing research on the Islands and then ask her as a fellow cultural sciensits to do my own research there and she would take me as a colleague. Being there, I can imagine no one would be advere to me learning magic from them.
Hal is very generous about the magic, when you are accepted by the Islands and would overwhelm me with tips.
Skye would be little reserved and reluctant, but would open up about mind magic and her research.
I wouldn't know how to interact with Leander, but Zephyr would definitely be friendly and offer me marital arts or self-defence lessons if not outright to teach me the basics of aural magic.
I would probably get along with the students, them seeing me more as Skye's colleague than a fellow student. I wouldn't become a dragon knight myself and no one would expect me to - learning the Art is a serious life changing decision and commitment. I think they could all realize through having me around that opening the gates of the academy and their own hospitality to other people outside of the candidates and students could totally work. They just don't have any defense mechanisms worked out with someone who would abuse that information or knowledge or threaten the academy and it's secrets.
I would probabkh stay there for research a few years, wrote my PhD paper and then went back down to earth XD. The academy is rather isolated place, which would be fine by me if I had a partner of my own, so I would first need to go back to find one. And there is still lots of research to do about "normal" people and the dialy seemingly small and banal things in life, which is a specialty of European Ethnology that I'm studying, so I would leave magic effects on society and making it more accessible to Skye and go do my own thing.😂 I'm doing a writing sciences project right now and there is lot about literature trends and fantasy genre that I want to explore and write about. 😁 So I don't think my life would be all that different. (Except the dragons, but without magic they would be too out of reach for me.)
Thanks for the question!^^

Happy Librarian Day!! 💜💜💜
In Brazil at least
I wanted to write a proper homage and pay my respect and admiration to my coleagues, but I lack inspiration to do it in a way Instagram will like it (can you tell I struggle with that platform? Hope so - maybe I'll take this text and post there) so here goes nothing.
I love my profession, it's a dream career for me since we can do SO MUCH within Library Sciences; all of the Information Society counts on and constantly depends on the libraries. Though it might look like all librarians do is ask for silence, wear cardigans and put books back on the shelves (while complaining bc someone put them back out of order) what we do is so much more. From peer review to normalizing academic works, from incentives to reading habits to educational propositions to make knowledge accessible, you can be sure there was a librarian involved.
I fell in love with this world at age 17 and though it becomes each day harder to follow this path - since we're living in the Fake News generation and the A.I. themes are so full of controversies - I wouldn't choose anything different than helping people through knowledge.
All of the doubts explained, all of the services provided, all of the college articles reviewed, all of the small children finding out they love to read, all of the younger friends falling in love with Library Sciences, they all make this so much worth it. I found my way of making the world a bit better and for it I am forever thankful.
So, to all of the librarians on this site (that I hadn't have the pleasure of meeting yet), happy Librarian Day (in Brazil at least) And to all undergrads thinking this is something they might wanna pursue, give it a shot; chances are you won't regret it.
Library Science is a form of art and I am a proud multi-talented artist 💜
