🐉RATING: 🔥🔥🔥🔥/5 A Fire Endless, by Rebecca Ross, continues the storylines from A River Enchanted, but also greatly expands the world building of Cadence. The four main characters - Jack, Adaira, Torin, and Sidra - struggle to halt a growing threat and adapt to their new responsibilities on the island. A River Enchanted, the first book in the Elements of Cadence duology, was set primarily in the East, focusing on the Tamerlain clan. In A Fire Endless, much of the plot is set in the West - where we learn more about the Breccan Clan - and in the mysterious world of the spirits. The introduction of new spirit characters strengthens the magical vibe that I found so appealing in book one. Bane, the North wind, makes an excellent villain, feared by both Breccans and the spirits he rules. Kae, a wind spirit, is banished to the mortal world and provides valuable information to both Adaira and Jack. We also meet Hap, an earth spirit, who guides Torin in the spirit realm. It’s Torin and Sidra who are tested most often and show the most growth in character. Ross does a brilliant job writing them both with realistic doubts, desires, and fears. As a reader, I’m always rooting for them. They are the more fallible, more human couple. Jack and Adaira, in contrast, are intriguing and inspiring, but far less relatable. The transition from A River Enchanted to A Fire Endless is seamless. The relationships continue to be beautifully written, and the plot has an urgency that will keep you turning the pages. A River Enchanted is Rebecca Ross’ first adult fantasy novel and I had the pleasure of not only buddy reading it with @keeperofpages but reading the exclusive @illumicrate edition. This novel encompass dazzling mythological and folklore elements to tell the story of a land called Cadence and two childhood enemies who have no choice but to work together to try and figure out why young girls keep disappearing from their island. ⁣ ⁣ Jack has been away from Cadence for ten years, happily studying music over on the mainland at university. He is compelled to come home to help his old adversary Adaira and Adaira, heiress to the East, is confident that Jack can use the power of his music to communicate with the ancient spirits and seek advice from them regarding the mysterious disappearances. ⁣ ⁣ This book is an excellent introduction to fantasy and world-building for the fantasy shy reader. It’s not too complicated, it has the perfect amount of characters and it moves along at a great pace. There’s a lot of political intrigue between the different factions on the island and some very exciting moments that put a new twist on what may come next for the characters that we get to know. ⁣ ⁣ There is a relationship that may be slightly predictable and if you’re familiar with fantasy tropes you might already guess what I’m referring to, even if you haven’t read the book. However, even though something like that would usually irritate me, I couldn’t deny how much I was enjoying the magical moments, the world the author created and more specifically, the dalliances with spirits which was filled with beauty and tension in equal measure. 🐉RATING: 🔥🔥🔥🔥/5 Have you ever participated in a read-along with the book’s author? What a treat! I read A River Enchanted over the course of three weeks, and each Saturday I was able to tune in for IG Live sessions with Rebecca Ross. For each of the three book sections, Ross answered questions and shared about her experience writing the book. A River Enchanted is set on the magical isle of Cadence. This Scottish-inspired world is strictly divided between the Tamerlaines in the East and the Breccans in the West. And both clans are susceptible to the whims of the folk - spirits of fire, water, earth, and wind. I loved everything about this story. The spirits are both whimsical and terrifying. The romance is swoon-worthy. Every character is fully developed and the relationships (between husband and wife, mother and son, brother and sister) are well written and realistic. The book also includes one of my favorite tropes: estranged adult child returns home. If you read my last review, you know I enjoyed Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young. The most common criticism I heard of that book was that readers wanted more magic. As I read A River Enchanted, I kept thinking that *this* is the book those readers wanted. The two books have much in common - disgruntled son returns after long absence, magical island, and a mystery to solve. But Spells is at its heart a small-town murder mystery while River is a rich fantasy with intricate world-building. After finishing A River Enchanted, I was able to dive right into the sequel, A Fire Endless. The first book focuses primarily on the Tamerlaines in the East, while the second fully reveals Breccan life in the West. Hello everyone and happy Friday! It’s been an interesting week in Beth-land. I’m due a big inspection in my lab first week of April and just getting last little bits and bobs sorted. To distract me, let’s talk about a book haul! I haven’t read Karen Joy Fowler’s previous book, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves yet, despite having it on my shelves for years 🙈 so it made sense to preorder Booth right?! 😂 It’s a historical novel about one of the most infamous figures in American history, John Wilkes Booth and is focused on the very things that bind and break a family. The Exhibitionist was also a no brainer, especially as it was recently longlisted for the @womensprize 2022. It promises to be a dazzling exploration of art, sacrifice, toxic family politics, queer desire and personal freedom. I also plumped for the @waterstones special edition because the spredges were gorgeous! Finally, A River Enchanted was my @illumicrate book subscription last month. This is Rebecca Ross’ first foray into the adult fantasy genre and follows two childhood enemies on the magical isle of Cadence who must team up to figure out why girls are going missing from their clan.
