There is something so deep about Laerryn's choice in the finale, and Brennan's phrasing of the decision to be made.

To clarify, this scene (copied and pasted from the CR wiki transcripts):

BRENNAN: On a 16, you must make a tough decision. Do you want to further limit the release of energy and make the release of energy safer for the physical environs of Avalir and Cathmoíra, or do you want to ensure that Rau'shan and Ka'Mort will be permanently banished from Exandria?

TRAVIS: Impossible.

AABRIA: Laerryn's little joke to herself was always that the Heart of Avalir was the thing she inherited, but it was too small. She made it bigger, she improved it. She improved the Etheric Net and built this and that she was the Heart of Avalir, and she gave everything to this city. But I know what people are fighting to protect and I remember what Quay said about going down with the ship. So we will ensure it. This will work. Avalir be damned.

As we were first introduced to her, Laerryn Coramar-Seelie is the Architect Arcane. As Aabria herself even put, her whole life, all her work, is about taking the city and making it better. Building more. Expansion is the name of the game. So when Brennan specifies that the limiting of energy output will save the physical environs rather than the people, that holds weight.

Just, in a mechanics aspect, there is the fact she is an Abjurer. The whole point of her magic is exactly this choice. To stop things from being destroyed. Her wards that take the damage so that she or others will not. She is not built to bring destruction, leave the fight to others. She will be there to soften the blows that come her allies' ways. She is the one one deciding this, and it feels right, because she's spent her studies dedicated to figuring out how she will prevent the destruction that comes her way.

But that isn't all.

Because any other hero, any other party member, every other soul faced with this question could so easily think that it is a useless decision. A city can be rebuilt, but only if the Betrayer Gods are stopped before they kill all the people that can do so.

But Laerryn, who has dedicated her years to this, the position of Architect Arcane, knows this city and her structures far more intimately. She has been there, step by step, as she forged them. Designed them. Watched over their construction. It is by her hand it was built.

Asking her, specifically, is asking her to choose between everything she's done, or let it all burn. Asking her to make this decision is asking her to decide her legacy. Will she live on as the maker of the land that survived such devastation, but not the people, or will she go down as the one who helped stop the Calamity?

Her choice boiled down to this: Limiting the energy, their work, the libraries and churches, the colleges, grand towers and hallowed halls, stone and mortar, it all can go on unshattered. Or, stopping the Betrayers, the people may continue on.

Was her work more important than the lives she was surrounded by?

Aabria mentions Laerryn was given the Heart of Avalir, jokes how she improved it. But the Heart of Avalir, while magical, is only an engine. It was made, and can be again. So in this moment, I think Laerryn maybe realizes that the true heart of a city comes from the people. Always thinking, thoughts speed by her, whether or not she ever had time to really process the revelations before her demise.

Evandrin is already gone due her hubris. Who else would she lose? Would it have felt like home, without Loqautious there by her side? Would it truly feel like her city, without Patia keeping up with her? What would she cause, without Nydas to hold her back? What is Avalir, without her Brass Ring?

Her assistant, probably still waiting for her, in their offices, and the choice of which will see tomorrow?

How many will feel the heat of Rau'shan's flames as they die? How many will fall to Ka'Mort's earth?

None, she decides. Her friends and neighbors, the kinsmen of her home, will not feel these pains.

I think it is also a moment that beautifully showcases her accepting her death. She will not be here to heal her city. She's going down with the ship. Maybe her blueprints will be found and used, and Avalir will be as it once was. Maybe they won't, and they'll construct it all anew. But she won't see it, so it is their turn to take what was given and build on.

Of course, Rau'shan and Ka'Mort were not the only assets of the Calamity, and damage and destruction was still wrought across Exandria. But there are enough hands to clear the ruins and make their own stories. And that is because of the greatest Architect of them all.

She gave them a chance indeed.

Big question: Who or when was the first use of the term UMA?

Cross posted to FR's forums but I thought fr tumblr meta readers would like this too! Introduction What is a UMA? It stands for User Made Accents, where the companion term is User Made Skins, but UMAs caught on as the catch-all term instead of UMS. I was in the Arcane discord server where foxaquinn made a joke about UMAs and wondered who was the first to use it. If you are on GASP (general accent and skin pinglist), UMAs pop up regularly where I got pinged 60+ times for threads with UMA in the title. I research by day and play pet sims by night so here I am, combining research and pet sims to unravel how language changed throughout the years in the skins and accents community! I included in text citations for my sources because I like those and I don’t like making works cited lists. :) First, what language does the staff use for skins? Maybe UMAs came from them? The Kickstarter uses the word “customs” in regards to the skins (Kickstarter, 2013) The first skin submission competition for the festival, Undel used the word “customs” to refer to the skins users made (Undel, 2013). Note that the current competitions and even the tooltip for blueprints use the word “customs” as well. The blueprint page even uses “user-created” and not “user-made” so "user made" must have stemmed from the community as a more casual way to say user-created.

Results Let’s rule out some approaches that may give an easy answer. I tried to use the FR search tool to see if I could find the first use of UMA, however it only indexes up to one year of results or 100 pages, whichever you hit first when you sort by age so I wasn’t able to glean anything from that. Note that I tried to stick with UMA as the search term because use of UMS just overlaps too largely with the sound “um” when I use the search bar, which also means that plurals are captured by FR’s search. I can also tell you that FR’s search lets you type in user-made or user made and it will pull up the same results.

Then I tried google where I used the key terms site:https://www1.flightrising.com/forums/ "UMA" with a time range from 2013 to 2014. It looked promising at first because it looked like there was an instance as early as 2013. When I actually checked it though, it pulled up the most recent use of UMA in the forums in the first two hits as seen by the timestamps of May 2023 next to it. Google indexed when the forum board was established instead of the individual threads for this search. I dropped the time range and just checked what results it would pull up.

There was an individual thread called the FR Abbreviations Guide that got pulled up. It was made in 2014 and includes both UMA and UMS in the definition list. However, UMA was added to the page in 2020 (FR Abbreviations, 2020).

I decided to just look back at some of the early Skins and Accents posts to see what language they use. It was pretty interesting, where many people just used skins and accents. There is no distinction yet, likely because there weren’t any festival or coliseum skins that users could submit yet! There were still categories though, since blueprints were so expensive, some artists offered “premades” which were skins people could buy for a certain cost on top of providing a blueprint. There were also options for “ghost artists” where the artist could design a custom skin but pass the psd files to the patron for them to distribute instead of the artist selling them instead. “Customs” was also another common term, where it works the same as it does today. People commission an artist to design a unique skin for them. The majority of skins on the market right now would be considered premades back then, which makes sense as it lets the artist have their creative liberties and will allow like minded users to support them.

I was clearly a fool to think UMAs were old because with the skins and accent threads research, I decided to comb through my forum posts to see what I ended up using. I first used UM accents in 2016 since that is when I first started collecting them, then the last time I used it was in early 2018 because I started using UMA by early 2019. I have no posts between 2018 and 2019, but clearly there was a language shift for me that preceded the FR abbreviations update just a year later (FR Abbreviations, 2020). I’m usually slow in the uptake so I decided to try and track down other forum boards besides the skin specific threads to see what terms were used.

As I was thumbing through the pages, I think I may have overestimated the age of UMA use popularity because I thought it started back in 2013-2014 since that is when the site first got started and I felt like UMA was such an old acronym. The General Skins and Accents Pinglist (GASP) started in 2016. I raked the first version for mentions of “UMA” and there was nothing ! The use of “UM skins” and “UM accents” was the norm (GASP, 2016; GASP V2.0, 2016; GASP v2.0, 2018). One of the first instances of UMAs being used in this thread was in 2018 (GASP, 2018). Can I do any better than 2018? It surely is an older term!

The accent trading hub was established in 2014, so chances are, there are some time points there! The results for “user made” predates “UM accents” by one year, and “UMA” by two years which were 2014, 2015, and 2016 respectively (Accents Trading Thread, 2023a; Accents Trading Thread 2023b; Accents Trading Thread 2023c). There were 14 pages of results for “user made”, 64 pages for “UM accents”, and 96 pages for “UMAs” from the accent trading hub thread. “UMA” was used by two people in 2016, then 5 pages worth of posts in 2017, then another 6 pages worth of posts in 2018, and it took off with 25 pages worth of posts in 2019. Clearly the language was developing around 2016 but exploded in popularity in 2018. This trend was similar in the UMA mentions in the skins and accents forum board. I used ctrl + f with UMA to see when it started regularly showing up in titles, and that was in 2018.

Discussion

According to the UMA searches in the discussion boards, do you know what cultural icon got a revival in the minds of mainstream media? Uma Thurman specifically because of Fall Out Boys who released a song with her name. And you know what Uma is like? UMA, User Made Accents. I’m not saying that Fall Out Boys planted the idea in our heads, but it’s quite the coincidence the song came out in 2015 and UMA as an acronym use started in 2016. In fact, when I searched the FR threads for UMA across the site, the early ones were Uma as a name and Uma referring to the song. The earliest mention of UMA that was actually relevant and broke containment from the skins and accents board was in 2017 in the tiny little questions thread asking what does UMA stand for. (tiny little questions, 2017).

I would like to say that while this user wasn’t the first to use it, they repeatedly popped up when I tried to see who used UMA the earliest. And that user is chocomonster, they showed up and consistently used UMAs in the forums since 2016. I’m saying they showed up in the bug reports, suggestions, dragon trading posts using “UMA”. They are definitely an early trendsetter for UMAs and repped it across the forums.

Popularity of UMA rose in 2018, you know what else got popular in 2018? Reselling UMAs to the secondary market. Typing in UMA in a title means you have more characters for other things. You know which artist got really popular in 2018? Ravenhearst. She has since changed her username but I will keep Ravenhearst for the search results legacy.

I know correlation doesn’t equal causation, but her skins were massively popular when she was regularly releasing skins for the highly rendered wings and sky scenes where there were skins sold in the 100s range. I looked at the game database for Ravenhearst’s earliest skin which was #24078 and compared it to my hoard of festival skins as a year benchmark. The Flameforger’s event in 2017 has a skin with #23992 while the Crystalline Gala in 2018 had a skin #25608. She started her night sky niche around skin #25001 so it lines up with the 2017 - 2018 timeline.

A stronger communal identity was also created with groups like accent addicts anonymous in 2017 or aaa for short, which is a group of collectors and artists who came together to make collaborative skins. An early "big hit" for them were the wildclaw male line where the participating artists made flower/halo/wings skins that were super popular at the time but also being hated on by the vocal minority. If you weren't around for the bustle, one example that came out would be Invidious by fenmori or Bewitched by Churyu. Some examples of the aaa's recent work would be like aaa. Amanita Ambrosia where three artists take turns, one sketches the concept, one lines the skin and one renders it .The increase of more people interested in buying skins and artists flexing their creativity allowed for a great burst of interest that has carried on to this day.

Conclusions Can I pinpoint who first used user made accents, UM accents, UMAs? No, but, I can guess that it was sometime between 2015-2016. It is clear that language has evolved in small ways right under our noses and that human memories are terrible as I thought we were using UMAs since the very beginning. The customization and uniqueness of the UMA system on FR is such a joy and I can't wait to see how the community changes in the future!

In conclusion, I love umas and will probably look at their sales and trends more.

Brennan: "Short 'Adventuring Party.' Last we left off, our Intrepid Heroes were grinding through the fall semester at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy. We had some high highs, some low lows. We discovered some interesting information, with Lydia Barkrock returning with data about Bakur the demon and a sort of ritual that had occurred tagged onto the end of a mystery that Riz had noted and that had been followed up on by Kristen around the disappearance of Lucy Frostblade, who seemed to have submitted paperwork to change her deity at the end of the last school year and then suddenly withdrew it. Riz also found the last place that she was observed before she went missing, although she has been confirmed by magic to be dead. We also discovered that Kipperlilly Copperkettle was getting food trucks with some little subliminal ads in the wax paper. There was a sort of fraught confrontation between Kristen and the other presidential candidate."

Emily: "Was it a confrontation? It was more of a conversation."

Ally: "Yeah, Yeah. I really came out on top, I think."

Brennan: "Yes, absolutely. We had some incredibly high academic achievements. Actually, A+'s across the board, save for our party cleric."

Ally: "I'll take it!"

Siobhan: "Hey, if you're failing, a C is an A+."

Ally: "A C is really good for Kristen."

Brennan: "Also a C in barbarian."

Zac: "A bit of a C."

Brennan: *laughs* "A bit of a C. But huge achievements in your artificer classes, and we also had huge achievements in warlock classes as Fig actually went on a quick impromptu field trip to Hell with her warlock class."

Emily: "They're building a recording studio."

Ally: "That sounded so sick, honestly."

Brennan: "Honestly, so sick."

Siobhan: "So sick."

Lou: "And licking Baby?"

Brennan: "Licking Baby."

Siobhan: "Fabian played the bass."

Emily: "I don't know how much to put my foot down about that."

Ally: "I think that needs to be the only merch that comes out of this season."

Siobhan: "Everybody lick Baby."

Ally: "Just a shirt that says, 'Lick Me,' and in the back, 'Everybody lick Baby.'"

Siobhan: "No context. No picture of Baby."

Brennan: "Everybody lick Baby. We also saw a new sort of, like, the coolest kid on campus, Fabian Seacaster, double A+'s, captain of the Owlbears, running study hall at Seacaster Manor. Never mind the rapidly piling boxes of takeout stinking it up in the kitchen."

Lou: "Hey, you know, we clean those out right before everyone comes over. I have to spend the day with them."

Brennan: *laughs* "As well as our Elven Oracle having to fend off ancient high elves in search of arcane wisdom at her job at Basrar's, working as a waitress, helping to serve that ice cream."

Siobhan pretending to serve ice cream and Zac pretending to eat it! 😂🤣

Brennan: "What incredible... It's finally time for Basrar to hire help, given that he has literally no overhead. He generates the ice cream from another dimension."

Emily: "Oh."

Brennan: "That's been all profit, except for what he pays on the mortgage for the shop itself. Incredible."

Zac: "His books are good.

Brennan: "His books are good. He's doing well."

Lou: "My man's in the black."

Brennan: "In the black, okay? We return back to Mordred Manor. And actually, I want to confirm with all of you as we come back here and find you, on the day of the Frostyfaire Folk Festival, a little sort of loose thread of a connection between something that is occurring at Gorgug's house, occurring at the Thistlespring Tree, that you had seen some information that your mom was working on connected to, but got away from you. Junior Year, pretty ****ing busy, gang. And speaking of how busy it is, we also introduced last episode our system for academic stress here in junior year."

Everyone: *holding up stress tokens*

Brennan: "Some of our students barely scathed by the monster that is cortisol as Fig began some paladin classes, both with the paladin teacher Halo St. Croix, and also some tutoring with Porter Cliffbreaker who, due to your incredible attunement with the principles of barbarianism if not any of the actual class features-"

Ally: "That's true, actually."

Brennan: "Porter signed your MCAT when your actual Bard teacher flew into the sky, weeping."

Emily: "I call him Sir."

Ally: "Yeah, finally you give him a shred of respect."

Brennan: "A shred of respect as he's like,"

Porter: "I have no idea why. What have I ever done?"

follow my morning routine step by step with me!😊😇☺️ [the frame pauses as the video starts to shift, distort, and artifact. you can hear low chanting in an arcane and unknown but clearly unholy tongue, slowly getting louder and accompanying a rumble that escalates in volume as time goes on. In the center, the place where I once stood is reduced to a mess of dark pixels, shifting unnaturally and contorting gruesomely. Something is wrong. Something is very wrong. You are struck dumb where you stand, breath coming in fleeting gasps that whisper of a gentler time before this. This. Oh, this. Was there ever anything before this? The video timestamp at the bottom proclaims infinity and the little red line does not move. There is a roaring in your ears now. Someone is screaming and you'd better run, honey, because it sounds like they're using your voice. Just when you have reached absolution and come to the conclusion that your death, yelling the name of your God while it falls on death ears, is imminent, however, the video unpauses, the little strange beast I have transformed into scampers down the stairs, and you are instantly moved to the next video on your For You page. You blink. Your legs are burning. You have 11 missed calls on your phone. Three hours have passed. The line you were stood in has completely evaporated around you and the store is now closed. Was it worth it? Is this the life you yearned for when breath was first poured into your lungs? The food has gone cold. The dream is gone and it is cold morning now. You drive home in silence: complete, utterly overwhelming, and oddly mournful.]

A reader was foolish kind enough to ask if I had any specific voices that I associate with Otohan when writing, allowing me to put my vocal headcanons out into the world (Grayson and Sevika from Arcane, and Eva Green as Artemisia in 300; if anyone's curious, yes I do have exact timestamped links to youtube clips lol).

Now I'm debating properly compiling a little master doc of references for Otohan (covering voice, facial structure, body proportions, etc)... Would anyone actually be interested in seeing that, if I did?

All of Fearne's postcards were written by the same person, hand-painted, and they're all essentially the same age even though they arrived at various different times. They are all in mint condition even though the oldest was recieved ~90 years ago, and even though Fearne has been taking them out to look at them often.

FCG most definitely gained a couple more of those "stress points" after the reveals last episode. Their memory is getting jumbled, and they are having difficulty recalling things -- but they specifically remembered that Dancer was a light-furred firbolg (covered in fur, tall, with floppy ears) and "she had blood on her -- blood on her... hand." That's an awfully specific thing to remember, especially since the "blades of grass" on their chestplate look an awful lot like fingers.

Laudna and Imogen made up, and Imogen gave her the ring <3

Fearne has a little green gem that Morri gave to her so that "if I found my parents ever, this was a very important gem I had to give them if I saw them because it would help them save the world." It plays with the light in an odd way-- some shadows flatten when looking through it, and there are runes carved into it. Sounds like the Moontide Crown to me!

Dancer actually has dark black hair, olive skin, "fuzz fur on the edges," and a tattoo of a star on her right cheek. She's a "complicated person, but in comparison to this place [Bassuras], shining."

Laudna was indeed named after laudnum, which is a tinture of about 10% opium that was primarily used as pain medication but was also sold without a prescription for many different ailments.

From the mind that brought you catchphrases like "life needs things to live" and "help, it's again" comes the phrase "I had a fuckin' knew it!"

Every member of the Paragon's Call seems to wear a pendant of the Duskmaven, aka the Raven Queen.

C'mon, let the leader of the Paragon's Call be Dancer, do it (timestamp 12:33 EST)

Leader of the Paragon's Call has piercing eyes, dark tanned skin, form-fit leather armor, and a flop of gray hair that goes off to the left -- aka the same person who Imogen saw in her dream

NAT 20 HISTORY CHECK

Otohan Thuul -- rumored that they've been involved with the Call for five or so years, and are responsible for its expansion. The reason they had a rep was because they were a famed warrior in the previous Apex War between the Stratos Throne and Ashanadoor -- they were considered one of the greatest warriors under the throne as a general, tactician, and strategist, but also because when the war was done, they just vanished for a while and popped up in Bassuras five years ago. She also apparently had an arcane-powered jetpack on her back.

The Apex War happened in 823 PD, and it never truly ended -- there was a truce that left both sides "exhausted and without victory," and the war is responsible for the destruction of every skyport in Marquet except for Jrusar and Ank'harel.

But.

This draws a whole bunch of connections to a hell of a lot of things.

First of all, the Omen Archive and the Grim Verity -- which the Lumas twins were involved in -- were, IIRC, both based in Yios, which is in Ashanedoor. So if this woman was a general of the Stratos Throne, she would have a motive to attack the twins other than their research into Ruidus, presuming that there is still a shadow war going on underneath the truce.

Interjection at 12:51 EST: goddamn the rolls in this section have been crazy.

Next, and IMO most importantly. This connects the Paragon's Call directly to Ruidus. It implies that the leader of the Paragon's Call is the person who had all those other people behind her, that she's training up all these people for a specific purpose, and that she is in some way connected either to Ruidus itself or to Imogen specifically. It also means that she will recognize Imogen the moment she sees her. Maybe she's using the Call as a front to find and train a very specific skillset, hence all of the figures being similar in stature?

Hey wait a fucking second. If the Paragon's Call is connected to Ruidus, and they also worship the Raven Queen, then what the fuck does that say about the connection between Ruidus and the Matron of Ravens? The leader of the Call presumably dictates their official deity, so what's the connection there? Ruidus is pre-Calamity, we know that, but what if it has something to do with the Raven Queen's ascension (118 years before the start of the Calamity)?

Otothan was "nightmare fuel" for the children of Bassuras.

"You don't judge somebody's worth by seeing how they do in a fair fight, you judge it by seeing how they do in an unfair one." Man, I didn't think that Ashton could say anything that better encapsulated Bassuras, but here we are

I can see the almost-full moon out my window throughout this entire thing and it's very pretty and thematic.

"There's no 'someones' here." I am fascinated by the All-Minds-Burn (how do you spell it?).

Also, I'm so, so appreciative of Laudna's relationship with sex in particular. "I haven't used that part of my brain... ever." "I've never been somebody's muse." "This has never really happened to me before" (referring to Dusk asking her out). Wanting sex and physical intimacy is something that's treated as such a taboo in American culture, especially casual or spur-of-the-moment or friends-with-benefits sex. And we've seen demonstrated that Exandria is not a place that is a heteronormative, cisnormative, or mononormative society -- queer people, trans-inclusive worldbuilding, and poly relationships are not only present but not systemically looked down upon within Exandria. And what we're seeing in the C3 party so far -- this open, flirtatious, casual, "normalizing" (this is not the word I'm looking for but I'll come back to it later) attitude towards sex -- is something we haven't seen yet on-screen before and I am honestly living for this sex positivity. Someone remind me to expand on this when I'm not tipsy.

(Yes I'm prepping this before the day rolls as shown by the timestamp, but I'm very excited and I think I should be allowed to capture that.)

How come I always forget this little thrill that comes with coding? Making the electric rock hand me the letters I just gave it just gives me such a pure and innocent joy. How do I always forget this feeling? Its been about 4 years since I've played with Python, and I'm doing the song and dance again, because I just don't remember shit for shit. But believe it or not, 4 years ago I made a code that read faces in a webcam feed and output a servo motion for my senior project.

But in 4 years I've learned maths arcane and electrons unknown and probability in 3+ dimensions. But now I'm going to be teaching with Raspberry Pi's and I need to revive these very dead brain cells.

Anyway, today was watching DOTA and Vox Machina with my fam while semi-recreationally trying to re-learn Python some more. I technically have to do this to be able to teach it in a couple months, which... I mean I know I can re-learn it, I re-teach myself coding every time I need it so that's fine. But I absolutely don't have to be going to the trouble I am just for the job. This has crossed over into fun, and I'm honestly feeling more refreshed playing with my Obsidian vault and python than I have in like a year.

[08:20am] ekko steps backwards, wincing quietly as pain digs into his right ankle. his knee buckles and the boy has to force himself to balance, knowing the small creature by his side would do little good if he gave in.

the three men snicker at his show of weakness and close in around the pair, malicious intent glinting off the shine of knives and axes.

heimerdinger flutters nervously around ekko's feet, jittering and uncertain. "gentlemen," he stutters. "we mean you no harm. as you can see, my good friend here is injured, so, eh, if you could let us through..." he trails off as one of the men laughs.

"my, we can't have that now can we?" the men step closer, laughing to themselves. "say, if you hand over that fancy watch you have tucked in your pocket there, little boy, we might be able to give you a little something. what do you say, hm?"

ekko clenches the handle of his sword but even he knows the chances of surviving were slim, even without considering heimerdinger by his side. his ankle throbs, an unnecessary reminder of his disadvantage.

he thought he had left being weak behind, left the churning sensation of being useless, staring the reaper in the eye and being able to do nothing still, in his past. yet here he stands, backed into a wall with the taunting of death breathing down his spine and he realises then that nothing had changed, not his lack of power, not his cry for help, not the gnawing worm of pain that refuses to undo its clutches on his soul. his demise had been long overdue after all, expired and decayed yet clinging on not by anything natural but by the will of a mortal and the magic of a watch. the universe was eager to watch him die.

"well," ekko thinks, a tired smirk tugging at his lips. "it's not like i'll ever be going down without a fight."

his hands readjust his weapon, heaving it over his shoulder. he tilts his chin upwards, staring the men in their eyes. “and if i don’t?”

the men glance at one another before laughing. “you’ve got guts. but no one wins a fight with just determination.” the tallest man spits at his feet.

everything happens in a flash. ekko shoves heimerdinger to the side, the yordle landing on his bottom, narrowly missing the throw of a knife. the boy himself bends over, hands finding purchase on the ground as one of the men sends a kick to his stomach, the shoes skimming the fabric of his tank top. his weapon skids on the ground, disregarded. ekko intends to use the momentum to swing his own legs around and knock his attacker to the ground but pain erupts from his leg before he can, the consequences causing him to stumble in his movements, effectively receiving an elbow to the face.

his back hits the ground with a thud, something warm and uncomfortable colouring his face, but he has no time to sink into the sensation when his senses tingle and he pulls himself onto his feet, his arms coming up to deflect another punch. someone comes up behind him and he grabs onto his attacker’s arm, flinging the man’s entire bodyweight up and over, behind him. they lie in a pile behind him and he huffs, catching his breath.

“behind you!” the yordle cries but it’s too late, something solid makes contact with the side of his face.

ekko’s feet can’t keep up as his sense of balance shifts drastically and he falls with the aid of a kick. his back hits a wall and he stays there, unable to move as the man walks towards him.

something urges to come out and he coughs, the metallic taste of blood in his mouth.

a pair of boots enter his sight of vision and he endures a punch to his face that sends pain ringing in his ears. still, he looks up and makes eye contact. if he was going to die, he thinks, it’ll be by staring death in the eye.

the man bends down and plucks his watch from his pocket. he makes a show of observing the object before he takes it. “you’re too full of yourself. i don’t hate that. if you hadn’t picked a fight you never would have won, maybe we would have taken you in.”

ekko glares through half-lidden eyes. the pain from his previous encounter with jinx on the bridge and now the pain from his current situation was proving too much for his body. darkness threatens to embrace his weary body though he had no intentions of giving up now. but his body couldn’t keep up; he had pushed himself too far this time.

still, he forces his mouth to open, his throat protesting as he speaks. “fuck you.”

the man’s face twists. how satisfying, ekko thinks, before he notices the rise of the man’s arm.

was this it?

time seems to slow as the man’s fist draws nearer, the boy’s breath growing shallow, pounding throbbing in his ears, his chest heaving, leg clawing in pain. was this it? his eyes drift to the side, seeing heimerdinger knocked out unconscious on the ground.

when did that happen?

his vision warps in and out, his eyes staying closed for longer than he liked, the adrenaline fuelling his body draining at his fingertips. he feels his guard drop and he knows when the punch makes contact, he’ll feel it for all the strength behind the fist. great, he thinks, this really is the end.

a cat saunters between the two.

ekko blinks. was he already dead? had hallucinating always been a product of death?

even his attacker is momentarily surprised, paused in his actions.

“i’m so sorry!” a new voice enters ekko’s perception and he raises his head as an unfamiliar girl peaks around the block.

your eyes search the place, studying the passed-out yordle – why did he seem so familiar? – the boy who laid limp on the ground and the big, burly man who stood over him. finally, they land on your cat.

“sorry for interrupting, my cat just loves to wonder off. if you don’t mind, could you pass him over to me?” you say, hands behind your back as you address the man.

ekko grunts with effort as his hand inches towards his weapon, perhaps two metres from his fingers. his attacker remains distracted as he talks back to you. “huh? who the fuck are you?”

you take a step forward. “just a passerby. i promise to leave once i get my cat back.”

the man laughs shortly. “and why would i do that for you? who even are you, give me a name damnit.”

ekko stretches further, finger grazing the handle of his weapon.

“well,” you start. “if you do i’ll—” before you can finish, you spin around, rising your leg and successfully planting your foot into the six foot tall man. before he can come to, you send a punch up from under his chin.

he stumbles back but doesn’t fall, wiping blood from his lip. “you bitch.”

the man comes running. he ducks as you swing an arm but it was a fluke and you raise your knee into his face. your fist revs back and comes full force into his stomach. this time, he does fall back and just to be sure, you dig your heel into his groin. the man howls in pain, unattractively drooling, eyes rolling back before he faints.

your fingers dip comfortably into every crevice of his attire, withdrawing any goods you deem valuable and stuffing them into any free space on your body. your hands enclose around a small, metallic watch and you hum in satisfaction at its intricate design, gentling placing it into your pant pocket.

you turn to face the boy whose hand had enclosed around his weapon. he looks at you oddly. you smile, offering him a hand.

“you look like you need some help.”

“who are you?”

deciding that you were tired of being asked that question today, you answer. “my name is [name].” you swing his arm over your shoulder. your cat meows, rubbing his face against your leg. “yours?”

Lydia: "Well, this is everything they had. You know, I can try to help you... I wasn't necessarily the most on the ball with this stuff during the adventure, but I remember a lot of conversations about it. So, you know, if there's anything I can do to help."

Siobhan: "I can cast Comprehend Languages as a ritual, and as long as I'm touching the text, I can read it."

Brennan: "Amazing. Adaine, you guys can grab this stuff. You can probably move it up to your little wizard's tower at Mordred and start putting the stuff out. You have your ritual circle all set up there."

Ally: "Before we leave Lydia, can I ask her if she's heard of Ruvina, the god that Lucy was following?"

Lydia: "Ruvina. Yeah. Yeah, that name did come up-"

Kristen: "Yeah."

Lydia: "-in the adventure at some... It wasn't like a big... I'm sorry, this is the kind of... This is why I wish I was more on the ball with this stuff."

Kristen: "Oh, No, it was a long time ago. They're just a god from the Mountains of Chaos, and-"

Lydia: "That's what I think it was. It's like- That name came up, not as a point of focus, but it's from the same region that Bakur's deity, I think-"

Riz: "Was from."

Lydia: "From, yeah."

Kristen: "Okay, well... Yeah."

Riz: "Okay, so rival gods, maybe?"

Kristen: "Let's take a look."

Fig: "Mountains of Chaos."

Riz: "Mountains of Chaos. Okay. Thank you, Lydia."
