#anyway.. WHERE ARE PEN AND COLIN I NEED THEM
Text
inch resting that lena said there were both benevolent and malevolent powers now and didnt allude to any Entities being in control (she said that the oiar was "managing" the bad guys which suggests there's either no higher power that she she's aware of, or that the higher powers control the oiar somehow). i mean obviously thats not the full story, and her version of events is probably pretty faulty knowing magnus, but it does sorta seem like these guys are running around unchecked. so maybe instead of an overarching forces deal like we had in tma, the cases are more separate.
anyway i think it's not quite to do with devotion or obsession or love and more to do with belief, or like, how many people you've made an impression on. how strong of an Idea you are. something something scp cognito hazards. inksoul and mr bonzo and violince guy had their fans (and god knows where that violin had been before he got his hands on it). the most recent dude had complete faith in the betting (?) app and im sure many other people did too. needles obviously got strength from people being afraid of him. the volunteers had their "great cause". all this i think has Implications for sam's new obsession with the magnus institute too but thats not what im talking about rn
it's also possible that this malevolent/benevolent split is totally arbitrary human categorization. we'll probably have to meet some of the Good Guys before we really start getting to know whats going on, but thats probably a ways off yet cause of the nature of the oiar, as revealed by lena last episode. they just wont be showing up in reports, thats not what the system's for. some of them kinda toe the line, like the dice, but i dont think we've met any Good Guys yet. maybe they'll show up and fix things in one of the reports or maybe they'll bust down the door to the oiar or someone will run into one in the outside world like how sasha met the distortion or maybe colin will fuck with the system so much it starts reading reports of chill people who cause flowers to bloom around them or who always have a pen if you need one or whatever. maybe the heavily tattooed person from episode 11 will turn out to be a good guy idk ive not checked out the arg i could have embarrassed myself so bad so many times this post. either way if im right that means that santa's probably real in this universe. also every religion simultaneously

A lot of rumours have been circulating around the spoilers dropped about Colin and his sexual life. My main thought on this is: intimacy.
Of course, I have to start by saying that if it’s true, I don’t like it, I don’t agree with it, and I feel uncomfortable seeing it. But hey! The man is single and a grown adult, so he does what he wants.
However, I do think that if we want to see half of the things in the book, including some kinky talk and female sexual pleasure on Pen’s part (help, I’ve been in naughty jail for quite some time now) it is crucial for Colin to know a minimum about what he’s doing. That only happens if he’s had time to discover his own sexuality (although it does take away from the sweetness of them discovering themselves with each other).
Yet, that sweetness might still be here and this is where intimacy comes in. If it’s true and Colin is well and truly in his slutty era, I actually don’t think it’s so ooc of him. We’re talking here about a man who, after his first trip abroad, brought home drugs to get high on.
You know what that is? A sort of escapism.
I see his thrysts in brothels as another sort of escapism. Especially if he’s having threesomes.
No strings attached, no single person to focus on = no intimacy.
We know this man is seeking escape. We’ve also been told he has some demons of his own he needs to wrestle with this season. I think one of those demons might be an intimacy issue.
I mean we’re talking about a man who believed he was so in love in season one he was ready to marry immediately. Only to later find out that his trust had been abused (I’m not commenting on what Marina chose to do, I’m just saying that he most likely felt extremely betrayed). And even if he says that he’s moved on in season 2, which his sexual experiences in season 3 will attest to, that boy is probably quite scarred on a mental level and is probably still escaping all sorts of real attachment. I mean even the swagger shows it. He knows he’s handsome and he’s having fun with it, but he is probably nowhere close to being ready to commit when the season starts.
And in comes our beloved Pen and she’s taking none of his shit. Worse, she will see right through him and eventually confront him about his need to escape, which will lead to a passionate carriage make out scene (mind still in the gutter, I do apologise, honestly send help). And for Colin, who possesses all that swagger, is visiting brothels and having threesomes, for his knees to buckle and to have trouble breathing because Pen gives him a compliment about his eyes in the context of a suitor lesson? It’s absolutely hilarious.
That man will always melt into a puddle when he’s with her because it is her. It is Pen, his Pen, a part of the family and someone who brings out the vulnerability in him he is so desperate to hide away.
I think, just as much as she needs to grow in confidence, he needs to grow in his trust in a relationship and to stop running and seeking escape. And I think they will help each other grow in that way. They will discover themselves with each other because there will be that intimacy and that vulnerability that these two do not have with any one else.
Of course that is also what might make the reveal of Lady Whistledown even worse for Colin. Because she is in part responsible for the pain and the betrayal he’s experienced. She did try to warn him and he did not listen so she felt like she had no other choice. But it was badly handled and he says that too. So we might get a duality where Colin finds that intimacy and that trust in Penelope and only her, but he also cannot just ignore how she’s responsible for his demons. And they will have to learn to grow around each other’s best and worst parts and decide whether they are what they want or not.
Anyway all this rambling to say that the sex scenes (if we do get them, I’m still not totally convinced) are probably a way to explore Colin’s demons but mean nothing. And I think (hope) we’ll be able to see the stark contrast in his attitude when he’s with Pen. Because after all, this is Pen, and this is love, and this is nothing like he’s ever felt before.

Polin Season 3
I don't think these will actually happen BUT if I ran the show this is what I would do
Colin already knew that Penelope was Lady Whistledown. I hate the inevitable angst they are most likely going to draw from this reveal especially with the added problem of Eloise, i also hated how they handled it in the books with Colins weird jealousy and ignoring his WIFE. SO what I think should happen is that Eloise forces Pen to admit to Colin she is Lady whistledown or she will tell him herself in order to protect her brothers heart. So she tells him and its alot of MOCK angst and stress for her so she tells him and he's just like "Of course you are". And its revealed that he's known since the thing with Marina, he put it together because she was one of the only people who could've known about Marina's condition AND she tried to warn him more subtley herself before it was in Whistledown which to me is majorly obvious. And also he's like, "I never understood why everyone thought it was such a mystery you are the only one smart and clever enough to notice and write all those things". Also of course he knew he is obsessed with her and noticed her weird comments and connected them well before Eloise did.
Benedict flirts with Penelope to make his brother realise he is in love with her. Benedict has a chat with Colin wherein he mentions his brothers fondness for Penelope and Colin is like "no we are friends" blah blah blah whatever and Benedict ever the troublemaker is like "well if you have no feelings for her surely you would not mind if *I* threw my hat into the ring" Colin doesn't believe him but then Benedict dances with Penelope at every ball, promenades with her, and makes it seem like he is flirting with her. and Colin IS jealous and is like accusing Benedict of toying with her feelings and Benedict is like I am doing no such thing Miss. Featherington is a lovely conversationalist, or hadn't you noticed brother?" and Colin is like "OF COURSE I NOTICED SHE IS BRILLIANT AND BEAUTIFUL AND WOULD MAKE ANYONE A PERFECTLY AGREEABLE WIFE" and Benedict would be like "Anyone?" and we the audience know that Benedict is suggesting her as a wife to Colin but Colin thinks that Benedict is referring to himself. Penelope doesn't actually think Benedict is flirting with her, she knows he is just a fun weird guy plus Benedict does make some sidelong coments to her to try to get her to realise his brothers affections. She doesn't mind because a Bridgerton showing her attention betters her chances with suitors anyway. This all comes to a head at a masqueade Ball where Benedict asks Penelope to dance but is distracted by a beautiful woman and takes off WHICH finally gives Colin the opportunity to go to her and confess his love.
Y'all I really need this season to come out lol

Posting some Season 3 content to break up what is likely a Queen Charlotte flood in the Bridgerton tag today:
Is it weird that I kind of hope there is a confrontation between Colin and Eloise where she finds out that he knows the big Lady W secret and still chooses Penelope that ends in a blowout conversation where Eloise finally sees even just a crumb of Pens perspective; because, in Eloise’s own words, she’s “never actually heard” her and it makes you wonder what other things she’s never fully payed attention to or considered over the course of their friendship. Maybe hearing it from Colin will be the wake-up call that she needed that she takes their friendship for granted. I mean, Pen has had obvious giant heart eyes for Colin for who knows how many years and her closest friend hasn’t even caught a hint of it.
Anyway, I love Eloise AND Pen (since the fandom right now largely seems to think you can only support one), and I cannot wait to see them makeup, however the writers choose to do it.

bro polin in a modern au would totally be that couple that goes to a house party together (with eloise, but she disappears immediately to get into fights with dudebros for fun) and just gravitate towards the kitchen (for colin reasons) which is where they spend the whole night just gossiping and giggling together before just making out the rest of the night till they get kicked out in the morning
and before they get together, they do the whole gossiping and giggling thing, but pen usually sticks to random corners while colin mingles, but somehow they keep ending up right by one another and they don't even notice that they literally cannot stop touching each other (constant hand holding (platonic???), constant hugs that linger (also???? platonic????), faces literally inches apart when they speak (how's that happening with that height difference???? (she climbs on counters like a cat) and also supposedly platonic????)
anyway the tension eventually gets so thick that people steer clear because they're so obviously close to some big cosmic shift in the universe and their relationship, but they just show up at one doing the same routine and just keep getting found making out, and that's how everyone finds out they're together now 😊
(hope you have a great day, I've been pulling a day 2 all nighter and idk if any of this makes sense, but I can see it in my mind and I needed it out there lmaooo)
anon your mind is working WONDERS!! Idek what to say other than I need to read more modern au polin fics bc I haven’t read any and they seem like they’d be my cup of tea so if anyone has recommendations link them below 🫶
(I also hope you’re having a great day/weekend and that you get some much needed rest after your all nighters!!)

I began looking over the episode titles for S3 again… and that “Tick Tock” title has me mulling over some things… Book Spoilers below!
Spoilers / theories
I’m assuming that like in the books, someone (whether Cressida or someone new) tries to claim the LW title and so Pen is under a time crunch to print a denial… and of course Colin likely discovers her while she goes to do so… because the next episode title is “Romancing Mr. Bridgerton.”
(But being that the next episode title is “Joining of Hands” I’m worried they’re not going to give Colin at least a full episode to grapple with that reveal… sigh. He deserves to have time to feel and express his feelings—be they sadness or anger— about that…)
But I ALSO wondered with how the show IS obviously changing other aspects of the story, if maybe Colin or Eloise will be under a time crunch to do something surrounding Pen… to parallel the time-sensitive situations where Pen felt back into a corner and made decisions that had reachingn consequences.
Maybe Colin learns something about Debling , who we know is going to be a “serious” suitor for Pen (whatever that ends up meaning), that makes his interest in her dishonest or ruinous? (to attempt to parallel the Marina situation, though, not the same - poor Marina was in a desperate spot. Doesn’t excuse what she tried to do, but the girl had almost no options). I don’t even need/want Colin to be romantically jealous - Pen is his friend first, and would be trying to look out for her for her happiness… he just also happens to be hella horny for her now andmaybealittkeinlovewithhernohesnotindenial 🤷‍♀️
Or Maybe Eloise has to make a monumental choice regarding the Queen who is still hunting for LW? And Eloise, being the only one who knows her identity, is the only one who can do something to save her friend, even if she’s furious at her?
How I felt about it would depending highly on the execution of such a plot line. Because it could be amazing for the characters in terms of reconciliation and understanding where each person was coming from (can you imagine the conversations??) in this season and earlier ones… that being said, I don’t want it to be used as an excuse for Pen to not have to apologize, but it could be a powerful moment between Penelope and either Colin or Eloise. A “walk in another person’s shoes” moment, if you will, where all characters involved realizes that nothing in those situations was clear cut. No one was blameless.
…but it would be a big departure from the book.
But so many things are already different - I want the story that has BEEN told with THESE versions of the characters to be done well… not just book accuracy for the sake of it.
ANYWAY, I’m tired of all the vitriol I’ve seen floating around for various characters. I have faith the writers will give us something satisfying.
I love Colin (my soft boi is the BEST male love interest on this show FIGHT ME)…
and I love Pen (shy, complicated, multifaceted, both powerful and powerless in equal measure, has a complete lack of real vulnerability out of fear… I don’t know if I’ve ever encountered a character like her before)…
And I can’t WAIT to see what this season does with them 🩵

Lol-ing at people on the Polin subreddit being like where are the spoilers?? at around 12pm our time bc tbh these ppl are probably leaving Bowral bc I'll bet you most of them are not living in Bowral dkfhdjskdj
Still such a random fucking location to premiere it in. But if it had to be in Aus, then Bowral makes sense I guess. (And in hindsight, yes, if I'd known about the screenings earlier AND I wasn't sick I would've tried to go)
Anyway I've been reading the spoilers on the Polin subreddit and sjdhdjdk excited about the Anthony content as always. Colin gets him a Venetian glass ball! Lol. And Colin didn't write to him/anyone but pen apparently. And Anthony is a well fed slut and greedy for more (going on yet another honeymoon lmao I think he needs to call that a well deserved holiday)

So what if the final episode of season 3 takes place at a ball? We’ve all anticipated the first half of the season mainly focuses on Pen’s glow up and lessons with Colin and the back half focuses more on Whistledown. Well, in the books, *SPOILERS* the Whistledown reveal happens at a ball. (I think it’s Daphne and Simon’s ball if I’m remembering correctly so obviously that has to be changed for the show). But Benedict’s book also starts with a ball. A masquerade (Violets final ball at Bridgerton house before she moves out to make way for Kate and Anthony, right?). So I’m just saying all these events could converge. I don’t expect a lot of Kate and Anthony. Maybe they’ll send them off to Aubrey Hall because Kate is pregnant or something. Anyway I don’t think they’ll be around much. But maybe at the end of the season, Violet decides it’s time to move on from being Viscountess and takes a different house for her and the 4 youngest children so throws a masquerade last hurrah at the Bridgerton home and that’s where the Lady Whistledown stuff comes to a head and also happens to be where a certain young woman sneaks in to have her Cinderella story and we set up for season 4.
Probably not, but one can dream. Just give Benedict the lead already! I need more of him. MORE!

I really don't like Penelope, but it isn't an opinion that anyone is allowed in the fandom without being called fat phobic, it is like the fact Penelope is meant to be fat gives her a pass on being a shitty person.
However, noting that season 3 is her season, (let's not kid ourselves it won't be Colin's season, he will be along for the ride), she should get her HEA then f*ck off.
It is an unpopular opinion with Pen fans, but in order to have her HEA Penelope NEEDS to give up LW for good, and I am not talking about the BS giving up she did in S2 when she went right back to it when things didn't go her way, that just came off as Penelope throwing a huge ass toddler tantrum. Anyway there are a lot of reasons why she should give it up, but the most important is that she needs to be able to be trusted by the Bridgertons if she is going to be part of the family, and in order to be trusted it isn't good enough for her to say she won't write about them. She will hear all their secrets, see all their scandals at first hand, and the thought that when something doesn't go her way, or she is annoyed at one of them, she could spill all the secrets just leaves a bad taste in my opinion.
The writers did her dirty when they had her be such an untrustworthy mean girl, because they didn't think that every nasty thing LW says is attributed to Penelope, and if they expect us to root for Penelope in season 3 after what she has done, and they expect us to be happy to see her as a Bridgerton after the way she has written about them, without some huge redemption and her giving up LW for good, is just very arrogant.
However, noting that season 3 is her season, (let's not kid ourselves it won't be Colin's season, he will be along for the ride), she should get her HEA then f*ck off.
Sadly, I don't see the 'fuck off' part happening unless her & Colin are banished somewhere else where we don't have to see them. But she's Shonda's favorite so she's not going anywhere unfortunately.
It is an unpopular opinion with Pen fans, but in order to have her HEA Penelope NEEDS to give up LW for good
Another thing that sadly, won't happen. Pen will likely hide her LW identity from Colin or it'll all just get brushed aside and she'll still keep writing her shitty gossip for the rest of the series. Shonda likes her drama too much.
In my personal opinion, the majority of the audience (no, I'm not talking fandom, but general audience who watches it) will also have a hard time with S3 as well for the same reason. They made a huge mistake skipping to Polin early b/c Pen is still portrayed as a villain and Colin has had absolutely ZERO time to get a personality or anything.
How the hell is anyone supposed to buy this couple falling in love with Pen doesn't deserve anything other than prison or banishment and Colin isn't even memorable?
They should have just stuck to the book order and let Benophie have their season and in the B plot of that they could have worked more on Polin.
They need to be serious with this bullshit of Polin's season being next b/c I don't think the majority of the general audience will buy or enjoy it at this point in the narration of the story.

i saw your asks about penelope and Eloise being a dom and I do think Eloise is more likely just because she refuses to roll over for a man. But who do you think would be the most likely?
I think this fandom has a really skewed idea of what it actually means if a character is a dom(me).
First, I've said this before and I'll say it again: neither Eloise nor Penelope have what it takes to be a domme. This means having mindset that what you're giving/taking is for your pleasure, and that other person is there to fulfill your needs. And the right sub will get off on this; it goes both ways. I've seen enough fanfiction in this fandom to notice that a lot of authors think slapping a gal in some latex, or giving a guy a bunch of gags/whips/restraits to play with makes them a dom. Which also feels inaccurate; it's less about the implements and more about the attitude. Anyway, there is absolutely nothing in book or show canon that suggests that El or Pen have any domme-like attitudes, and neither Phillip nor Colin seem like the type to cede control at all because they both seem to have suuuuper gendered ideas of what it means to be a man and I think they'd feel like it's unmasculine to let this happen.
To say that Eloise "refusing to roll over for a man" means she's a domme is such a misguided take. It basically means you're conflating "strong independent" women with being dommes and the ones who do "roll over for a man" are automatically subs, which is not accurate at all. Same for men; the sweet ones aren't automatically subs and the aggressive ones aren't necessarily doms. You can't conflate one's external personality with their sexual preferences.
Second, people also need to understand there is a difference between topping someone for a hot minute (see: what happens in When He Was Wicked between Francesca and Michael in that cottage) and actually domming them. One of them is just a fun variation to experiment with in bed, and the other is a more sustained thing that colors the couple's overall sexual dynamic.
It's also really tough to make kink-related assumptions based on JQ's source material, and even the show to a lesser degree, but to answer your question, I think the closest we get to a domme is actually Kate, and that too, I think she and Anthony are more switches than anything (@jeanvanjer and I have discussed this at length). Is my opinion partially influenced by some excellent fanfiction out there (see: the mob boss Anthony one, and that one written by an anonymous author where Kate is a governess for Anthony's kids)? Partially. But also, I think both Anthony and Kate are both so take-charge in every day life (particularly in show canon) that they'd probably enjoy letting go and ceding control in the bedroom. We also think Kate would be something of a bratty sub lol. It just fits.

Okay first one shot for the older Penelope Au posted on AO3. I do have it under the read more as well if you don’t want to go to AO3.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/43407499
Tell me if you heard this one before. A maid enters a brothel searching for a gentleman, well wait, that's not quite right.
A gently bred lady disguised as a maid enters a brothel looking for a gentleman.
"Ben get up!" Penelope hissed kicking her best friend.
Benedict groaned from where he laid. Groggily he squinted up at the red head. "Pen?"
"Yes, it is me you boorish man. Get up or I shall leave you for Anthony to find."
Benedict glared up from his spot on the floor. "You wouldn't dare."
"Would I not?" Penelope challenged; arms crossed.
"I am your dearest friend!" Benedict argued as he sat up.
Penelope smirked. "That is why I found you before Anthony did. Now get dressed. Your mother’s masquerade is tonight, and you are nowhere near ready."
Benedict groaned but proceeded to look for his shirt. "What are you doing this part of town anyway?"
"In part looking for you."
Benedict raised an eyebrow, but neither of them asked nor offered the information of the other reason Penelope was near the brothels. Five minutes later the pair loaded up into the hired hack that was waiting for them. Once safely tucked into the hack Penelope began taking parts of her maid's uniform off such as the ruffled neckline. Then adding a jacket to have the dress appear more one a lady would wear.
"Quite the scandalous scene you're making Ms. Featherington," Benedict smirked. "Undressing in front of a gentleman."
Penelope rolled her eyes and then tossed a small bag of coins at Benedict. "We've known one another since we were both in leading strings Benedict, propriety left screaming years ago. Besides if we are counting scandals your family currently holds the record."
Benedict snickered, until he weighed the pouch in his hand again. "This feels heavier than normal."
Penelope shrugged. "Consider it a bonus for being my longest employee."
Benedict pretended to look touched. "What an honor my dear lady."
They managed to get back to Mayfair without being seen. Now they had to sneak Benedict back into Bridgerton House without Anthony taking notice.
“Benedict Bridgerton where have you been?”
Well shit, Anthony never waited at the door before.
Benedict was distracted.
“Ben are you okay?” Penelope asked.
Benedict blinked out of whatever daze he was in before turning back towards her. “Yes, I am perfectly normal.”
Penelope raised an eyebrow. “Really? Because you’ve nearly stepped on my toes three times since the dance started.” Penelope quickly moved her foot back from Benedict’s oncoming boot. “Make that four.”
Benedict looked away guility. “I am sorry Pen.”
“What has you so distracted?” Penelope, finally able to look in the direction that had held her best friend’s gaze.
Oh. Well the lady in silver is quite beautiful.
“Ben,” Penelope said, her voice teasing. “Do you happen to fancy her?”
“What Pen . . .I-”
Oh, Benedict was tongue tied, just like a schoolboy with his first crush. It was adorable. Penelope led their dance off the floor. Ending it by shoving Benedict in the direction of the lady in silver. “Go talk to her, or I will tell Anthony where I found you this morning.”
Benedict didn’t need much more encouragement before he took off.
“Did my brother really just leave you here alone for the wolves?”
“Colin?" Penelope did a double take. "My how've you have grown during your travels! What a fine young man you've become."
She starts to reach up to ruffle his hair, just like she used to do when he was still shorter than her and gripped her skirts for her attention. Colin bends down a little, leaning into her touch ever so slightly.
He looks down at her other hand, her left hand. No ring. So, his rake of a brother had still not proposed yet. Why was he keeping Penelope waiting for so long?
"It's good to see you again Pen," Colin greeted her. "I just got back actually.”
"Just in time for the masquerade," Penelope teased. "What a devoted son.”
"Anything for mother" Colin said, leading Penelope’s arm through his as they began to take a walk around the room. If he sounded a little desperate to have Penelope's attention on him even for just a moment longer, well she didn't need to know that. "How have you been?"
Penelope nodded. "I have been well. Well other than Benedict practically dragging me all over London to save him from Anthony’s wrath” Penelope giggled. "And since I'm officially a spinster-"
Colin stopped walking. "Pen! You've been declared a spinster? But you're only five and twenty!"
Penelope shrugged, like she's resigned to this fact. "I've never had suitors; everyone knows I'd be a spinster in the end. Why delay in declaring it?”
Everyone believes you are waiting on Benedict to finally mature. We all thought the two of you had an understanding.
Colin wanted to punch his brother, especially after seeing Penelope watch his ungrateful self dance with another woman.
“If it doesn’t trouble you Pen, would you honor me with a dance later this evening?” Colin asked her.
“Of course, Colin,” Penelope said, holding out her dance card.
Colin looked down at her card, only one other name was on in, Benedict’s. Good, that means Colin has no competition and can take as many dances as he pleases. Colin quickly signed his name off on three, one of the dances being a waltz.
“I shall you find when the next dance starts,” Colin promised before taking off to find Anthony.
Colin had to find Anthony.
How dare Benedict allow the ton to declare Penelope a spinster! What was he waiting for? He's finished university, is talented enough with his art that he could make a living off it, and he knows there is a piece of property that is practically Benedicts out in the country. Is he that much of a rake that he'll let Penelope suffer?
He doesn't deserve her! She has waited years for him, and this is the thanks she gets?
Luckily Colin managed to find Anthony just as he was finising up a conversation with their mother.
“Anthony!”
"Colin-"
"Come next season I am participating in the marriage mart."
Benedict had his chance, now it's Colin's turn to court Penelope. But first he needs to plan.
Benedict pulled Penelope aside after the ball. “Pen I’m in love! You must write in Whistledown that I wish to find my lady in silver.”
“Benedict, what the fuck?”

did you read RMB ? i didn’t but i heard colin rather was very aggresive in it.
Okay so holy shit did not realise it's 4am so this will be my last ask for tonight!
Thanks for sending this, anon :)
Before we get into this, I need to shill the hell out of Nine Rules To Break When Romancing A Rake by Sarah McLean! THIS is what RMB should have been although Callie and Ralston are MILES ahead of Book!Polin. The vibes of a fat girl gaining confidence through life experience and her "friend" helping her through it is IMMACULATE. So I would recommend reading that instead of RMB!
Anyways let's get into this ask! I will say it caught me off guard lmao because I am the last person who would be asked this.
That being said, yes I have read! January 2021 was a time for most of Bton fans I feel cos most of read the books after we liked what we saw in S1 (minus Daph assaulting Simon) and were curious about the books esp of the characters we adored!
I was so lucky that I loved Ben and Ant (he's a shithead but he's my shithead and also I love all fictional Eldest Siblings - they are me and I am them) so I binge read the series and fell in love with Kathony and Benophie.
Because I always finish what I start (though I have not finished the series 💀 thanks Philoise for being so shit), I went on to read RMB after Kathony and Benophie's books even though I didn't really care for them in the show. I really thought Colin and Marina would be endgame!
This is so funny you asked because recently I did come across my Goodreads review of RMB the first and last time I ever read it. Apparently 22 year old me liked it?? Which I cannot fathom now. Then again I have read so many other HR books now and all vastly different, by better authors too.
It's a nice book but ultimately pretty forgettable. I cannot tell you any key moments that stood out or the full plot.
Book Spoilers Ahead!
I just remember vaguely Lady Danbury does a bet to uncover LW and Cressida pretends its her?? I think??
Then one scene I remember - only because my friends and I are on a mission to find better and hotters versions in other HR books - is their carriage scene where Colins only grabs a single tit of hers 😂 So now we call him One Tit Colin
I would say it's a simple book, good for people just starting HR. However, it's not the best in the series like the Polins like to hype it. It's a bit boring because JQ tried to make them fairytale perfect and it did not work. It's not a Disney movie, Julia, it's HR and there needs to be substantial conflicts and hotness!
As for the aggressive bit, yeah I did not like how he emotionally abusive to Pen for most of the book especially after he finds out she's LW. Then in one scene gets so jealous, he grabs and bruises her, thus becoming physically abusive. Definitely did not like that.
Also their dynamics felt off to me upon reflection, they never ever get onto equal standing. Like yes, most HR books have that Regency-misogynistic gap in the beginning that tilts the power to the Hero initially but the couple always ends up equal in the end. That never happens with these two and it's just really weird.
Other than that, it's an okay book. Not awful but not great either. It's just overhyped in my opinion.
There are more points to be made but they all come from the brilliant Triv @hptriviachamp and I share the opinions too! She wants to add on to this and is definitely better for it since she has read RMB more recently than I have! (She also has alot more thoughts on the aggressive bit of your ask!)
Without further ado, I'll let her reblog and add on:
(Thanks again for this ask anon and let us know how you find Nine Rules if you decide to read it!)

My Ted Lasso Re-watch: S1E6 (part 3)
Two Aces
Keeley makes a Pavlov's Dogs reference. But if the only good thing about her relationship with Jamie was the sex, then I can understand why she ended the relationship.
Keeley dropping truth bombs on Jamie. Because he doesn't recognise people genuinely helping him because his dad was always pushing him to dominate. He's thinks it all manipulation because that's probably what his dad does.
1st proper conversation between Sam and Rebecca. Sam just wants to do good and earn his fame and money legitimately. And Rebecca only considers joining midnight bonding session because how much of a sweetheart Sam is. I mean you try and say no to him, it's impossible and why the hell would you?
Roy is secretly a softie. And leaving home at 9 to move to a new city, yeah that's scary. I like hearing stories about Roy and his Grandad, he's seemed like a good figure in Roy's life.
Sam wanting to join the Nigerian team. He'll get there but isn't helped by one annoying, rich prick.
Richard kept sand from the beach where he first slept with a supermodel? Okay, you do you, buddy.
Nate values something because a girl was nice to him once. Something that probably does not happen all that much.
Rebecca putting in that day's newspaper because she is trying (and failing) to move on from her marriage. I say failing because people who do successfully move on don't plot revenge against their ex that involves a whole business being destroyed and a lot of innocence people getting caught up in it as collateral. That's not moving on, that's being a fucking bitch. It's all well and good saying fuck the haters when it comes to the press, but if her plan worked she would be even more despised by the press.
Cindy Clawford is a fantastic name for a cat. Sorry for your loss, Higgins.
Isaac and his duck pen is fucking adorable. Please can he have a new one?
They speed through the rest of the background actors, though I am interested in all the stuff they put in and why.
Colin putting the keys to his current car in, is peak himbo. Beard's question is valid. How did he get home?
Jamie joins in. His mum is wonderful, as we find out in season 3 and a better influence on Jamie than his dad. Jamie is the way he is because of his dad's need to look good in front of other people. He's not trying to get Jamie to win because he cares about him, he's doing it so he can look good and claim Jamie's accomplishments as his own. His dad's abuse towards him over shadowed his love for the game.
We never got to see what Ted and Beard put in? We were robbed.
Yeah, don't burn stuff inside, do it outside, and safely. Don't need anymore forest fires in the world, because I know that's been a fucking thing.
Higgins cares more about the team the longer he spends time with Ted. He might have been hesitant to go along with Rebecca's palm in the beginning, but after spending time with the team and Ted and Beard, he genuinely cares about them.
Dani is back and he's fine. Good, because I would go full Dean Winchester on any ghost who hurts Dani.
Jamie being the one to start the chant shows him wanting to be apart of the team. Ted was getting through to him, with Keeley's help.
Rebecca shrugging off the coat because she doesn't want to be associated with the team in anyway, and is off to get rid of Jamie.
The team is happy and and all seems well until Ted finds out what Rebecca did. And he is pissed off for the second time this episode.
Ted let's slip that he bakes the biscuits for Rebecca. I think we should have gotten a more shocked reaction from her. She went to lengths to find out where the biscuits came from and finding out that the man you've been trying to ruin has been baking them for you all along, that's got to be a bit of gut punch. All I'm saying is we needed a couple more seconds on Rebecca's reaction.
Everyone is devastated that Jamie is gone, because the team needed him, despite his shitty behaviour. And Dani is a sweet cinnamon roll to try and cheer up Ted, Beard and Nate.

Bridgerton writers are truly only here for the drama like this is shonda what did I expect honestly, only she would turn a lighthearted romance focused book series into a messy ensemble drama with romance. I am so glad we're getting a love story with a plus sized woman being desirable but this was not the time for polin. People are loosing it on twitter and for good reason, I haven't read the books so I have no skin in that game but after S2 Penelope is unlikable ( she did a lot of shitty things) and Colin is frankly extremely boring( when you're a rich aristocrate white man who never worked a day in his life and thinks the epitome of finding yourself and being useful is going on a trip on your brother's dime and then taking his money to buy diamonds you didn't know we're fake and then bitch about it) they needed more time to mature and grow until they were ready . Also lol I saw someone being like they did this so as not to have 2 back to back white couples because they cast a white actor as Philip and I'm cackling bc this might be part of it. I love Nicola but if netlfix couldn't stomach having the bridgerton family be poc the least they could've done is have every love interest be people of color but I guess having a plus sized woman of color as a lead was too much for them, also making Philip white is not it and I don't understand why did they that, did they think we'd be like oh we got 2 poc leads out of 178359 time for the white people to take over. Anyway I hope they'll give us a lot of kanthony in S3 since their season was full of nonsensical secondary plots it's what we deserve.
I’ll be honest, while I see why Pen isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, I also don’t think she’s as bad as everyone makes her out. It’s like one half of the fandom hates her guts and the other half worships the ground she walks on but what I see is a flawed character that has made some stupid decisions just like everyone else on the show. I think a lot of the Bridgerton fandom is a lot nastier than they need to be in general. The constant negativity in the tag is A Lot for a show that’s such blatant escapism.
That being said, my concern with polin S3 is I genuinely thought they could use another season to simmer and mature as people before we got their romance. I love polin, but I know a lot of people are stuck in a place where they don’t ship them as much as they want to right now, and I can understand why. I think the extra season could have benefited this. I also admittedly have some nerves about Luke as a leading man but they haven’t really given him anything to work with up until this point so I’m just going to choose to believe they knew what they were doing when they cast him.
I definitely think/hope we will get quite a bit of married kathony next season! That’s why I didn’t have much of a problem with how we got none last season.

I'm excited about more bridgerton but at the same time so painfully uninterested in pen and... Colin? That's his name right.
I appreciated the plotline of Pen's whole thing spiraling out of her control in s2, and potentially growing up and 'elevating her discourse', so to speak, but still have a hard time forgiving some of her anonymous mean girl shit lol, still I like the actress a lot and think the featheringtons are so much fun to watch, so I'm genuinely curious to see where they go w her character, even if the Queen trying to catch whistledown plot keeps me so exhausted lol
Can't say the same for Colin, can't summon up a hint of interest and even when they made him come back from galavanting with stubble and EVERYTHING, he's still such a child. I guess they both have to mature and see what's in front of them but how are they gonna make that interesting 🤔
Still, after s1 I didn't think I'd give a shit about Anthony, but he was pretty compelling in his season. I think what helped me there is that the show made a clear effort to showcase how oldest siblings w martyr complexes go on to turn their siblings into props and set pieces and hurt them more by dictating their needs to them, while remaining romantic fluff with a happy ending
I almost started rambling on some more, bc I'm actually curious and nervous about this 'elevating discourse' thing. Lots of feminist-flavored stuff does this thing where they have a lot of mouthpiece characters that will say things about women's Rights/Empowerment, while also still having them shit on their peers for being conventional women in the first place, compete with them, and have characters like Cressida, who is a woman working the marriage market just like the female protagonists, but when she does it it's bc she's a nasty manipulative woman and not bc she's working with the society she was dealt, the way our heroines do. They have their rebellious girl who believes in women's rights, hates on her older sister and assumes she has no inner life bc she wants a marriage and family, and then gets pissed when a man makes similar observations to her about the limited interests of the women around them in the same way that she kind of does (tho he was shittier about it)... And while I really can see a familiar trajectory that u see in a lot of privileged white girls of starting with a lot of internalized misogyny in their feminism, I was excited to see her grow up and find more nuance, until that came in the form of a cocky man talking down to her about it being how she gets radicalized LMAO (just like in downtown...)
--anyway fuck I did start rambling, so I'm stopping now, just putting some random thoughts out to procrastinate but I gtg 😞
