POLIN JEALOUSY/ADVICE ONE-SHOT
Colin fights his jealousy after watching Penelope and Lord Debling dancing together at a ball, is teased by Benedict, and seeks advice from Violet.
The silver beads threading Penelope's hair seemed to glow like tiny moons. If he'd had parchment and pen, Colin might've noted the perfect juxtaposition of fiery red locks and sparkling silver. He noticed everything--the way her dress swayed so effortlessly against the floor despite her stiff grip on Lord Debling. Was it only Colin's imagination, or did her gloved fingertips hover an inch from his shoulders?
…perhaps he was only imagining it. He reminded himself that Penelope's stiffness was for the sake of propriety. Of course she’d want to touch Debling. He was a gentleman, for one, and even Colin had to admit that he had his own upper-class swagger. A little posh for Colin’s tastes, but from the looks being cast his way across the ballroom floor, Colin knew the lord had made a lasting impression on this season’s eligible debutantes.
Colin hastened for a sip of wine, only to discover that he had drained his glass. He turned away as a certain red-headed beauty twirled across the floor (more gracefully than he had ever allowed himself to notice). He nearly dropped his glass as he struck Benedict in the chest.
“Steady there, brother,” Ben said, putting a hand against Colin’s heaving chest. “What’s the hurry?” He cast a glance over Colin’s shoulder, and the pieces seemed to fall into place. “I’ll say, your friend seems to be enjoying herself. If ‘enjoying yourself’ is best expressed by a scowl, that is.” He tipped his glass. Colin shot him a glare, even though his heart lifted a bit at this last sentiment.
“Oh, don’t be such a grouch,” Ben said, pushing his glass into Colin’s available hand. “While you’re at the table, fetch me another drink, won’t you?”
“I’m not your waiter,” Colin huffed, stifling the urge to turn back to the dance floor once more. It was like an itch, only scratching it burned like a rash.
“You could do with a break. Somehow my ‘sturdy’ little brother has spent the night looking quite pathetic in the corner.”
“I’m not pathetic,” Colin said, and pain tightened his chest.
Ben rolled his eyes, still looking across the dance floor. “Say, maybe I ought to have a word with this Debling fellow. See if his eye for art is as keen as his eye for a wife.”
“Give him my best,” Colin grumbled, sounding more pathetic by the second.
Benedict gave him a sturdy pat on the shoulder. “And you, give Ms. Featherington your best while I do it. Now, hurry along now and get those drinks before the dance is over.” With a wink, he rejoined the sea of lords and ladies.
Colin gazed across the open floor once more. The waltz was approaching its conclusion. Pen’s hair looked on fire in the torchlight. His mind wandered to the fragments of a dream—Pen in the garden, her eyes twinkling a magnetic blue, her lips a luscious pink. He had leaned in just enough to catch the scent of her hair—like the wisteria garden, only…newer, fresher, somehow, and then—
“Colin, dear. Are you feeling alright?” His mother’s voice stopped him in his tracks. Her brow furrowed, and he hurried to right himself, as he had taught himself to do long before Penelope had pounded her way into the forefront of his mind.
Some things, it seemed, had not changed. He had a guard up, and even his beloved mama could not crumble it.
“Very well, mother,” he managed, swaying slightly on his feet. “Merely...looking for a refill.”
“Not feeling up to a waltz tonight, I take it?” The look she gave him suggested she knew there was a particular reason for it—Colin was not one for skipping dances.
He had been avoiding his mother, he realized. Was that a flicker of hurt in her eyes? More than his brothers or sisters, Violet Bridgerton had always had an eye out for these things. And if that was the case, should he not be using her knowledge to his advantage?
“Mother,” he began, aware of the blush suffusing his cheeks. “Forgive me, I know we are in company, but I must ask. Do you believe the best foundation for love is friendship?”
She smiled, crinkling the skin around her eyes. Lovely eyes, so open and trusting. He suddenly hated himself for having avoided her, even if it was unintentional. Perhaps it was because of this conversation that he had kept himself from her.
And something told him that she knew this as well as she whispered, “I think you already know the answer to that.”

Angry Penelope is great but I actually cannot wait for angry Colin. He’s actually been through a lot and has never actually expressed any anger over any of it either. And not only just directed at Pen for Whistledown or anything, because WTF do you mean his family hardly ever return his letters???? What else could they possibly be doing, they have servants and no electricity!!!
This pic gives me hope that Colin also gets his chance to have his big feelings too, and I know Luke N is going to deliver in those scenes.

Have you guys realized that all the Bridgertons seem to have a sweet spot for Penelope? İn the books and in the TV show. Even Simon declares two minutes after meeting Pen that he’d prefee dancing with her over her sisters (in the book).
I have a headcanon that it‘s because the Bridgertons kind of always knew that she‘d end up with Colin.
Ben and Anthony - normally being very tense around unmarried women - are always relaxed and chatty with Pen, probably because they already see her as a sister.
Violet is so shocked that Colin gets engaged with Marina (in the show), and she states that it‘s because he‘s only 22, but let’s be honest: Edmund was 19 when they married. I assume she was so shocked because she always thought Colin had feelings for Penelope.
I wish the Show would explore that tbh. I want Colin to surprisedly announcing „I think I am in love with Penelope Featherington“ and Benedict - a big smile on his face - answering „Congratulations! You are officially the last one to find out!“ 😂

WAIT i also want a polin au where the featherington sisters have a close relationship, maybe because they all understand what it means to be all daughters of a less than popular barony. With a neglectful dad and a mom putting pressure on all of them, they turn to each other to confide their worries and stuff. It’s just an overall sweet relationship. They don’t show affection in public, since their Mama tells them it was unbecoming to show affection in public. Portia loves her daughters very much, she just has some issues regarding showing affection.
They all probably figured out that Pen is LW, with their relationship being so close, it was easy to figure out who LW is. They didn’t confront or stop her, mostly because they saw how much pride and fun Pen is having with it.
Prudence and Philippa, as the two oldest, dotes on and are protective of Pen (Felicity too if we wanted), because they understand that Pen loves deeply. They can see it through her actions, her kindness and her people pleasing (i.e. her relationship with Eloise). That’s why they’re so concerned when they noticed how much Pen adores Colin, and subtly discourage her from holding those feelings. They know the Bridgertons are bad news to them. They all might be part of the Ton, but they’re different compared to their families.
Prudence always watches Pen and Colin like a hawk, which is kind of why she’s not really married yet. She wants to make sure that Colin doesn’t do any funny business to Pen. So when Pen confesses about what she heard Colin say at their ball and (and also confesses about Eloise and the LW business), Prudence was livid. Was about to march into Bridgerton house and everything. But Philippa, the voice of reason, points out that they don’t have any power compared to the Bridgertons. So Prudence doesn’t and instead starts scheming on how to best protect their little sister.
They also say little lies to Portia, just so Pen can finally wear what she likes. Portia finally gives their opinions some value, since they’re married women at this point. They know Pen hates her clothes, and finally not being under their mother’s thumb, they can finally help Pen in some way.
Anyway, the next season, Pru and Pip finally decides to show just how close they are. Finally married (and recruiting their husbands into being protective of Pen), they do everything they can to run interference whenever Pen is about to have some time with Eloise and Colin.
What they don’t realize, is that Pen is also greatly adored by the Bridgertons, and so clearly wished and expected Pen to join them soon (once Colin pulls his head out of ass LMAO) so they also try to interfere when Pru and Pip tries to take Pen out of talking with Colin.
Honestly, i just want a Prudence and Anthony stand off as both the eldest Featherington sibling and the eldest Bridgerton sibling. I think it would be funny.

The new interview that came out revealed that it's gonna be and I quote a "romantic roller-coaster" . But how?
I think that it's not cause it takes a while for Colin to figure things out, I think he kisses her pretty soon, maybe second episode? if they're petty then he will kiss her only in his dreams but that it's the only thing he can think about now, the scene where she touches her lips from the trailer I think, and he can't stop looking a bit like Simon and the spoon in the first season, she's torturing him without even knowing it, and Colin is so falling for it, he realises it and blames himself for not seeing it before but only now that she's over him, and she is, Penelope is courting and is being courted by someone else maybe she even refuses Colin's new attention.
Or the roller-coaster is for LW, he loves her but hates LW, he's devided by his new love and her alter-ego, it makes him act cold at times? In the books is because he is jealous of her accomplishments but in the show the reason could change. There's a particular scene where he's looking at something tearing up a bit, I don't think he's looking at Pen and her suitor, he would be mad jealous but not tearing up or maybe she just rejected him to go dance with Lord Dubling? or even worse Lord Dubling is proposing to Pen?
