OP also literally never stated that like... the mutual proshipper ever like force-fed any of their ideals or content. Or that they were even super close. They just happened to be mutuals. And mutuals that may or may not have ever directly interacted. And just happening to find out the mutual was proship was enough for OP to feel like they'd been nefariously misled for malicious purposes. How much you wanna bet the proshipper in question didn't even have that """bad""" of a ship, if a ship was even a part of the equation that lead to the discovery? In my experience, most pro-shippers actually have more tame ships than antis-- but of course, why should that even matter?

I'd expect that kind of reaction from OP from being mutuals with a na/z! or genuine predator-- not because they vaguely "knew" someone who does the fictional equivalent of beheading barbies and blowing up the dolls. Key word dolls.

"proship is when problematic ship" actually no that is...nope. that's not what it means. the 'pro' bit is the prefix that means "in favor of, supporting, etc." it' is not short for problematic. proship just means pro-shipping; it just means you support everyone's right to ship whatever they ship, even if it makes you uncomfortable or whatever. it means you don't think people should be harassed and doxxed for ships.

like, in the end, there are a lot of reasons people ship different things, and its not my business whether it's for trauma processing (which is really fucking important, actually) or because they're using fiction as a safe way to explore fucked up shit, or because fucked up dynamics just mean very different things in fiction than they do irl because fiction is not reality. there are a lot of ships that personally make me uncomfy, but if i don't like something, i just block people. i click away. and that's why i consider myself proship. because they can do their thing, over in their corner, so long as I can do my thing over in mine.

and like this isn't meant to make any of you change your minds or anything, because i know a lot of you still won't agree with this. but i keep seeing young fans spreading the idea that "proship" means "problematic ship" and it's just frustrating to see.

Hey. What you like in fiction vs reality is connected. Reality and fiction are 2 separate things. These can and should coexist. It's not a debate

I'm not proship but a lot of anti proship bloggers take it waayyyyy too far sometimes.

Like death threats and and sending multiple asks and harassing people is not okay in this circumstance.

And the antip proship side can be too harsh, like no one has to tell you their truma to explain a vent fic or when they're exploring how a toxic relationship can look in fiction. But we do need to understand that fiction can affect reality and that it can be a tool in abuse, whether it's used as validation for the abuser, or a tool against the abused.

However, the proship side has issues too. Finding things like pedophilic relationships hot is wrong, even if you wouldn't actually support one in real life it's still troubling and I'd recommend talking with a therapist if you have access to one. Writing fanfic about real people is disrespectful to them, unless they've said they're okay with it.

Both sides have good ideas about how fiction should be treated but acting like only one side is right is counter-productive and doesn't do anything except cause more problems.

Tldr: The anti proship side and proship side both make good arguments for how fiction should be treated and acting like one is correct over the other does nothing to address actual problems.

hey, thank you for making this blog. i wish all antis realized 'proshipping' used to be normal. proshipping used to be the basis of what a fandom was. i remember growing up and popular ships were the twins from ohshc and multiple related homestuck ships. you just lived and let lived and its like everyone needs to butt in on everyone business now.
