Been wanting say this for a while:
I know that it’s a team game, but honestly Toto needs to answer for the performance for the last 3 years.. because I don’t know what decisions if any he’s been making. The car is getting worse, and they are continually being out developed, and have wasted a seriously strong driver paring. I don’t hold out much hope for Mercedes future tbh.

At this point I won’t even pretend to care about either Toto Wolff or George Russell.
The day they won’t have a hater is the day I won’t care about F1 anymore.
The more they speak the more I’m glad this is Lewis’s last season with those people.

Seeing the rumors about Ratcliffe and Kallenius apparently going to Miami to court Verstappen and offer him what Lewis was asking for just makes me realize that they never really valued or even believed in Lewis values and initiatives. It makes me think they were okay with it because he was winning and probably went along with them to keep him happy but never truly believed in them but as soon as he stopped winning for them they are showing their true colors going after the exact opposite and willing to give him the ambassador role to represent them.
i can't even quantify the anger i felt when i heard about it. i know at the end of the day it's all business and it's all bullshit when teams say they're a family, but i think i really did hold merc and toto to a higher standard. i'm not saying this as someone who's a fan, i'm trying to be objective here but — lewis has more association with the brand name mercedes than verstappen ever will. he is the literal embodiment of all the values that they claim to aspire to — diversity, inclusion, sustainability, etc. etc. and not only did they absolutely fumble him when it came to contract negotiations, the fact that they would now (allegedly) offer better terms to a guy who's the exact opposite of all those values? insane. literally insane. like they are (allegedly) offering verstappen 150m euro (or dollar, i forget which) and ambassadorship, while lewis asking for ambassadorship with his 40m contract was apparently too much? fucking hell. toto has turned out to be such a two-faced little snake here it's astounding. remember this is the guy who, when asked if he'd take horner or verstappen from rbr to win, said "i'd rather do it alone". he's literally seen everything max and his father incited against lewis in 2021. lewis, who he claims is his close friend. and now this. i'm so angry.

I genuinely think that today was my last time watching.
What was that strategy Mercedes. Genuinely robbed a podium chance. They cannot keep playing the strategy as if they are the fastest car anymore they are 3rd or 4th at best. They need vast improvement in the pit stops and communicating to their drivers.
I don’t think it was entirely Mercedes fault, but, as it seems they gave their drivers the wrong information about how long the rain was likely to last, they have to shoulder a lot of the blame. Idk, I feel like other teams have started looking upwards over much less egregious bouts of form. Binotto was ousted after a much less disappointing change of form, and I do think there comes a point where questions have to be asked of Toto. Two years of bad cars and bad strategies, with the drivers often proving the saving grace and carrying them through, he may be a shareholder but the ship is floundering with him at the helm and there has to come a point where he takes some accountability for that which I honestly don’t feel he does.

The George Russell-Enthusiast to Toto Wolff-Hater pipeline is actually a waterslide that’s 2-3 races long.

This Mercedes issue has been present for such a long time, even before 2022, though. It's so maddening. I remember so many races where they made questionable strategy calls, confident that it would somehow work out. You can do it, Lewis. You've got the pace. Yeah, we know, we know, we know, but you've done it before! Many times of Toto laughingly "apologising" on the radio afterwards, but you did it Lewis, what an amazing drive! Same thing with the pit stops. Of course there were races with absolute mastery of strategy and teamwork, but the cracks always showed, especially when the Mercedes was head to head with the Ferrari or, in 2021, with the Red Bull. It was Lewis who made the difference and often he did that despite the calls his team made.
They don't even need a car that is just as good as the Red Bull, just one that's close. They have such a good pairing that their drivers would manage to do that rest. That's how Merc has always operated and why they wanted George, who showed how he could outdrive that Williams. They make their drivers do most of the work and that's not even a bad thing, although not ideal, but when the car is as bad as it is now, why not focus on doing what you can to directly help, like the pit stops?
(Also, People used to think of Toto as this leadership genius, but he's never really understood the engeneering part of it all and he was never the reason they won. His attitude about not focusing on small things like their stops has always been shitty, another example is how he did not listen to Lewis during the whole sidepod saga and made the call to adapt way too late. He's brilliant with finance, but that is it. From a mechanical viewpoint he really does nothing to help and I don't see him leading at the moment, just sounding defeated and clueless and not laughing anymore while he is apologising to Lewis, because not even Lewis can save their face with that car and neither can George.)
absolutely agreed !! lewis is a master in that car and he has got the pace but it's got to be exhausting that the entire success of his team is put on his own shoulders and that his team isn't utilising everything they can to help him out. it's one thing to know you've done wrong and apologise about it, but it's another to actually learn from those mistakes and get better.
i'd indeed argue that alongside mclaren, mercedes right now has the best driver pairing. you've got a 7 time wdc who is still ever so hungry to learn and grow and compete, and george who's shown countless times that he is capable of winning races. so yeah!! so much fucking potential that's being wasted because mercedes doesn't prioritise getting everything right.
i also agree with your part on toto. he's part owner of the team and i highkey doubt he'll ever leave that spot (and i trust you on the financial aspect), but he is so not leading that team. look, hate on christian all you want, but i've always thought that christian is focused on putting the right people in the right spots and utilising everything he/they can to get the most out of every race. toto is not.

Liam Lawson on F1 accessibility and Ollie Bearman:
“I would say maybe, it’s becoming more clear-it’s hard because obviously I don’t wanna just speak for myself but just using Ollie [Bearman] as an example-how potentially accessible formula 1 is for the younger sort of generation and us trying to step into it. I think in my experience it’s not so much driving the car but everything else that comes with Formula 1-the pressure, the media side of it the atmosphere-it’s very very different to what anything else we’ve raced. But the driver part of it sort of how accessible it is. I think from the simulator work and preparation that we do that someone like Ollie is able to jump into the car and be on the pace and do such a good job”
THIS is it!! This is what we’re saying! Liam and Ollie both performed superbly when given the opportunity to do so. It’s clear that the F1 car is manageable for someone making a quick jump from F2 or older F1 cars. When-in my experience-the reason teams have been hesitant maybe to bring in younger talent like Liam and Ollie is cause of the difference in the car. Liam and Ollie have both said that’s not true and they both did quite well through several tough races in Liam’s case like Singapore and Qatar.
It’s for reasons like what Liam says that we need to either push out some of the guys who aren’t performing at their level (*cough* Ricciardo *cough*) or open up the sport to more teams! If Andretti had gotten their bid accepted, Liam Lawson might not have to wait around for DR to get his head out of Chr*stian Horners ass and retire and he could have a seat for 2025. Cause until that happens, and until other teams make moves to push out their older competitors. Liam (and Ollie, sort of) can’t join F1.
And another problem this raises, is that either of them could have a seat next year. If teams weren’t so scared of missing out on the next Max Verstappen.
Toto Wolff practically has the seat reserved for Kimi Antonelli and he will do whatever it takes to either get it to him in 2025, or blow off that year to wait for Kimi in 2026. Meaning that Liam and Ollie would be left on their asses if either if them signed to Merc. And this isn’t hate to Kimi! This is simply a criticism of the teams only taking younger talent when they’re considered prodigious.
If they signed to a lower grid team like Haas-who we know are in tentative talks with Ollie-or Sauber or Alpine then they will underperform to their potential because the car they drive is shitty but they’ll be the ones blamed for it due to “lack of experience” and teams can continue to make the claim that the F2 to F1 jump is too big and the cycle repeats perpetually until it’s just not worth it and we the fans lose out on potential great talent. Even though drivers who have been in the sport for years can underperform in the same car and it’s fine!
It doesn’t make sense, truly, for them to not trust younger talent when Zak Brown and Mclaren have signed the youngest pairing on the grid, who after updates last year to the car, were pretty consistent with placing in the points and earned them several podiums.
Also, look at how much good the 2019 rookies ended up being for the sport. 3 childhood friends entered into F1, there were highs, lows, etc they each got their shot to prove themselves and now. One is working to rebuild a historic team, one is outperforming a 7 time champion (again no hate just observation) and one is considered to be apart of the team that can take the fight to RedBull and Ferrari
It just doesn’t make sense when young drivers get passed up even when they prove themselves in favor of relying on middling drivers who’s time in the sun have kind of passed on.
Anyway, I hope Liam and Ollie get a seat next year. I hope Kimi Antonelli does what’s best for him as a kid rather than what is best for his career. I hope Daniel Ricciardo gets kicked out mid season. And I hope the next time a team comes in trying to join F1, they can actually do it
