“The New Testament is recognized by biblical scholars the world over as an arbitrary hodgepodge of dubious literature of uncertain origins and reliability.
We have no reason to believe the authors of the New Testament documents were any more honest or critical or infallible than any other men of their time, and there's plenty of evidence to suspect they were less so.”

I’m reading this Miraculous fanfic and it’s really interesting and well written. Something that really bugs me with fanfic is that people often write characters with behavior/abilities that are too far above the capabilities of whatever age group they are writing him as. I understand that it’s fiction, but sometimes I just can’t get past it. (SpyxFamily does a really good job of portraying the dichotomy of how impressive accomplishments and tasks are to a young child vs how it appears to adults)
Anyway, in this fic, I was thinking the author was doing a really good portrayal of how a 14y/o would react in their with the limited information they were given. I was going to write that in their comments with examples, but then I can’t help but wonder if it really is this author writing a 14yo well or if they are 14 yo and they have these perspectives themselves, even with all the background info.
At risk of hurting a teenager’s feelings, I decided to keep my comments generalized and out of their specific comment section.

HIJAB BUTCH BLUES by LAMYA H.
Alright, changing it up a bit with my book stuff but this one hit home with me. The author draws very interesting parallels between stories in the Quran and her experiences as a gay muslim woman that are very interesting. And if you think you can’t be muslim and gay, or wear a hijab and be gay, or even tackle muslim culture and queerness in one, then you’re bound to be pleasantly proved wrong with this one.

hi sorry in advance if this is weird but i couldn't for the life of me figure out who machete was reminding me of and just now i figured it out - surku the dog from the moomins. can't remember enough to tell how accurate that is personality wise but something about the image of a distressed pointy-nosed dog shivering in a coat... plus ne on molemmat ahdistuneita queer ikoneita
I love Surku! Surku must be protected at all costs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you ask me, he's even more distressed in the comics.

I keep him on my fridge door as well.

But now that we're on the topic of Moomin characters, I must add that I see Machete in various Fillyjonks a lot. The short story Fillyjonk who believed in disasters is one of my favorite pieces of literature ever, when I first read it it shook me to my core, I still revisit it on yearly basis. For someone who seemed so wild and free spirited by nature, Tove Jansson did remarkable job at catching and depicting the essence of anxiety, uncertainty, vague sadness and irrational fears. At least in my opinion.

What did the Bible originally say?
"It is one thing to say that the originals were inspired, but the reality is that we don't have the originals - so saying they were inspired doesn't help me much, unless I can reconstruct the originals."
"Not only do we not have the originals, we don't have the first copies of the originals. We don't even have copies of the copies of the originals, or copies of the copies of the copies of the originals. What we have are copies made later - much later. In most instances, they are copies made many centuries later. And these copies all differ from one another, in many thousands of places."

would you be able to give examples/explain more about how race only impacts gideon in the tlt-universe? not being facetious or condescending, genuinely asking. thank you!
Hi anon! If you mean my tags to this post, I wrote
#earth conception of race doesn't impact any character in the series except the canonically brown main antagonist
By which I mean my Worstie and main antagonist of the series, John Gaius (PhD).
I don’t think TLT as a series engages with race in any especially meaningful ways. It’s set in a post-Earth society with entirely different social norms, and there’s no concept of race and ethnicity within the population of the Nine Houses. Physical descriptions of the characters are scarce to say the least, and they rarely spell out the kind of features that suggest specific racial connotations, because the POV characters don’t seem to think it’s something worth remarking upon. iirc, it takes until halfway through HtN for the narrative to confirm that Harrow has brown skin.
[See also Tamsyn’s GtN characters description post. It quotes passages from the book, and you can see how minimal the descriptions are, and she repeats several times that her characters’ appearances are up to the readers’ interpretations. It just doesn’t seem to be a big concern of hers]
Then there’s John, who grew up in twenty-first-century New Zealand and IS explicitly Māori in a way that absolutely impacted his character arc. It's not A major theme of his Nona chapters, but it’s there if you read between the lines. The boarding school he went to, which IRL had a high percentage of low-income Māori students on scholarship. The depth of his climate anxiety, his uncompromising “Nobody left behind” stance before the cryo project was halted, and his fervent hatred of ‘the trillionaires’ afterwards... these are all informed to some extent by his background as an indigenous man imo, and so was the global reaction to his developing powers. The “We were going to put you fellas in jail, weren’t we?” the way his initial attempts at publications are all flat-out ignored by the scientific community and dismissed as culty gimmicky faith healing until he leans into it.
John being Māori is just one of the many pieces of his backstory, and far from the most impactful to what eventually went down, but my point remains that he is the ONLY character in TLT whose racial background 1) affects his story arc and 2) is relatable to the audience. Everyone else is ten thousand years removed from Earth, and I’m just not very interested in using racial identifiers when exploring these characters and their dynamics, because the characters themselves don’t care and neither does the narrative.

hi, longtime reader here checking in after a while, i hope you don't mind asking but i noticed you seem to go by qeresî now instead of cherry! was there a reason for the name change/is it ok to still refer to you as cherry? just curious!
There's no big reason for it!
I changed it simply because 'cherry' is a pretty popular alias for people to use online, it's one I randomly chose ages ago before I started writing IF, and I wanted to differentiate myself as an author by picking something more unique 💀
Plus, 'qeresî' is just a Kurdish word for cherry, so yes I'm totally fine with people still using cherry when referring to me as well 💖🍒

To me, Machete kind of has the energy of a secondary villain/coldhearted side character in someone else's story that a lot of fans latch onto, moreso than the protagonist. Question is, would he be the villain in anyone's story?
Why, thank you! I'm actually glad to hear he gives off that vibe. I don't think he set out to become a villain but a lot of people certainly view him as one.
#in the 16th century canon he starts out as an introverted but sincerely well meaning guy that never quite manages to find his social niche#he was a sensitive kid and when subjected to enough pressure#his insecurity fearfulness and powerlessness mutate into distrust resentment aggression suffocating repression and self-restraint#I don't think he's a bad person in fact he consistently tries very hard to do the right thing#do his job properly avoid letting people down and get through life with a sense of dignity#but he is supposed to come across kind of cold impersonable and difficult to be around if you don't know him personally (and very few do)#people can sense there's something wrong with him and are put off by it#Vatican is a nest of vipers and as the stakes rise he retreats deeper into his coldblooded untouchable work persona#he has no choice but to start lying scheming blackmailing and eliminating his enemies#in order to maintain his position keep Vasco safe their relationship under wraps and his own head above water#essentially playing by the same rules everyone else in the holy see has been playing with for centuries#eventually he loses his spot as the secretary of state and is manipulated/forced to take on a role in the roman inquisition#and if people were sort of iffy about him before being the authority overseeing trials torture excommunications and executions doesn't help#and since he has so few allies and such an infamous reputation he's an easy target for scapegoating whenever necessary#towards the end it dawns on him that he's become the kind of twisted cruel corrupt person he used to fear and despise#and the guilt moral injury and abject self-loathing had largely sapped him of his will to live by the time the final assassin gets him#answered#anonymous#Machete#Vaschete lore#he thought his dream of priesthood would make him a better person more worthy of admiration safety and love but he climbed too high#and got roped up in the dangerous games that take place under god's nose and slowly got strangled to death

I'm allowed to be uncomfortable by a man with a one-sided obsession on a woman ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
? Okay radfem in the making? Isn't Marcille the same in her drive to bring Falin back, to the point she used the Dark Arts to perform fucking Necromancy (highly illegal and banned across all nations as of right now in anime canon)? You people were applauding her for her sacrifice and her drive, and yet Shuro who has a crush on her, who fell in love with her authentic self (her compassionate nature, her love for creatures others would be disgusted by, ie, dungeon caterpillar) is hated. He acknowledged he was wrong in mistrusting Laios, but when he left the party, he still risked his own life to find her, to the point he's on the verge of starvation and exhaustion. His dedication to saving her is born from the same love and appreciation Marcille and Laios held for Falin.
I understand that the prospect of a man in love is disgusting to you, especially if that man is from other culture with different courting customs than you. But can you at least recognize his drive? And that despite him proposing to her once, he never pushed her to marry him? She told him to wait and he did, for months. None of his behavior on screen has shown him to be lecherous. If she had told him no and he kept pushing, then it would be seen as obsession and creep behavior.
I don't mind that you dislike him, but you're refusing to acknowledge the depth of character Ryoko Kui is bringing to the table. That, I dislike.

See. The thing is, the key factor to me for having Hopper accidentally becoming a father figure for Steve is that, with the rare exception, it MUST happen post El dad-ifying Hop, and post Dustin brother-ifying Steve. That facilitates both El and Steve hanging out and going wait...I can...collect these guys?... Hmm…. And secretly seeing each other as siblings. All while Hopper gazes on in dawning horror at the realization he has the urge to ruffle Steve's hair and call him champ. That's the dream.
