By which I mean my Worstie and main antagonist of the series, John Gaius (PhD).
I don’t think TLT as a series engages with race in any especially meaningful ways. It’s set in a post-Earth society with entirely different social norms, and there’s no concept of race and ethnicity within the population of the Nine Houses. Physical descriptions of the characters are scarce to say the least, and they rarely spell out the kind of features that suggest specific racial connotations, because the POV characters don’t seem to think it’s something worth remarking upon. iirc, it takes until halfway through HtN for the narrative to confirm that Harrow has brown skin.
[See also Tamsyn’s GtN characters description post. It quotes passages from the book, and you can see how minimal the descriptions are, and she repeats several times that her characters’ appearances are up to the readers’ interpretations. It just doesn’t seem to be a big concern of hers]
Then there’s John, who grew up in twenty-first-century New Zealand and IS explicitly Māori in a way that absolutely impacted his character arc. It's not A major theme of his Nona chapters, but it’s there if you read between the lines. The boarding school he went to, which IRL had a high percentage of low-income Māori students on scholarship. The depth of his climate anxiety, his uncompromising “Nobody left behind” stance before the cryo project was halted, and his fervent hatred of ‘the trillionaires’ afterwards... these are all informed to some extent by his background as an indigenous man imo, and so was the global reaction to his developing powers. The “We were going to put you fellas in jail, weren’t we?” the way his initial attempts at publications are all flat-out ignored by the scientific community and dismissed as culty gimmicky faith healing until he leans into it.
John being Māori is just one of the many pieces of his backstory, and far from the most impactful to what eventually went down, but my point remains that he is the ONLY character in TLT whose racial background 1) affects his story arc and 2) is relatable to the audience. Everyone else is ten thousand years removed from Earth, and I’m just not very interested in using racial identifiers when exploring these characters and their dynamics, because the characters themselves don’t care and neither does the narrative.

re: my tags on this post, @psychicbluebirdmiracle wanted a list so here’s some of my favorite Robin Hood adaptations in no particular order:
Sidenote: most of these are either extremely niche and/or “you may think it’s bad but I think it’s good” because that’s just what my tastes are.
BBC’s Robin Hood: You all knew this one was going to be up here and if you didn’t, you haven’t been following me long enough. This is what gave birth to my brain worms. I’ve given a PowerPoint presentation about this which was three hours long. I have subjected other people to this show to the point that there is now a yearly celebration where we watch only one specific episode of this show and make memes about it. I am insufferable about this. The day I stop thinking about this show is the day I have lost all brain activity.
Back to Sherwood: I am once again reminding everyone that I have offered to exchange my firstborn child for the original English version of this show. The Vibes on this show are perfect and I will never forgive the people that cancelled it after only 13 episodes. Fun time-travel related hijinks? Sign me up.
Princess of Thieves: Who doesn’t love a Keira Knightley movie?
Disney’s Robin Hood: Listen, you just can’t go wrong with this one. Very solid all around. But there’s another reason I’m putting it on this list. My cousins (ages 6 and 4) were staying over with us on Easter and I put this movie on at one point to get them to sit down for a few minutes while my parents made lunch. My godson (the 6-year-old) asked me why I knew so much about what was going on in the movie and I explained that I watched it when I was young, and then my dad said that the movie is so old that he watched it when he was a child. It was a lovely inter-generational bonding moment over my special interest as my dad explained to my cousin about the different characters and how there’s a lot of different versions of the story.
Not really an adaptation but continuing from the last one, this YouTube video: Some of the best analysis on why most mainstream Robin Hood adaptations suck. This is why I mostly just like the versions that have good Vibes.
This soundtrack to a Swedish Robin Hood musical: I can’t even begin to explain how upset I am that I found out about this musical after it had already been cancelled due to the pandemic. I could have gone and seen it. There’s not even a DVD of it. At least we have the soundtrack which is full of bangers. Everything sounds as over-produced as you’d expect from the country that makes over-produced Eurovision songs, and I love every second of this. If you’re not going to listen to the whole thing, at least listen to Prince John’s song.
This even more obscure soundtrack to a Finnish Robin Hood play from 1997: Everything here is just Vibes. I wish I knew what the actual plot of the play was but these songs are great on their own. The fact that the singer from a famous Finnish band (Neon 2) sings a couple of the songs is just ?????A Choice???? but a perfect one at that.
Robin Hood: The Great Escape: My most vivid memories of listening to this play that’s a podcast is when my IBS was really bad and I was on the bathroom floor crying in pain, so I just put this on to distract me. Anyway, this one has good characters, interesting mix of different cultures and LGBT+ representation, and it all works seamlessly in a way that doesn’t feel forced. Definitely worth a listen.
Robin McKinley’s The Outlaws of Sherwood: I bought this book from my local library’s clearance about 15 years ago. It’s a solid fun adventure and that’s pretty much all I can say about it.
The Finnish opera adaptation of Robin Hood: The dogs in this are nightmare fuel and the whole thing is bordering on the “so bad it’s good” line. The lyrics are so weird at times, it’s awfully cringy sometimes but I love it so much. I own it on DVD and it has English subtitles so if anyone wants to watch it sometime let me know.
Carrie Vaughn’s The Ghosts of Sherwood and The Heirs of Locksley: I need a third part of this. These are a quick read, about 100 pages each, about the children of Robin Hood. And although the premise may sound cliché and childish, I swear these are so good and worth your time.
C.K. Brooke’s Marian: Princess Thief: Ah, yes, the “disappointingly heterosexual” one. Putting aside the fact that this book missed a great opportunity in making at least one of the characters gay, it has an amazing all-female-cast of characters (there’s a male love interest there too I guess, I don’t care about him). This book made me feel like how Sailor Moon made me feel in high school with it’s focus on the Power of Friendship.
That one Finnish audio drama that’s based on Finnemore’s version: Everyone sounds so horny in this one for some reason and the actual text is not helping. The theme song is a banger. It’s a shame the CDs were copy protected so I couldn’t rip the files for myself.
A black-and-white recording of a Finnish play from 1971: The fashion is so 70s it hurts my eyes. The songs are so bad. The plot is almost non-existent but I love every second of this. (I would have linked it but you can unfortunately only watch it in Finland)
The 2009 movie with a dragon in it?????: I don’t remember most of this except that it’s definitely in the “so bad it’s good” category. They just shouldn’t make high-budget versions of Robin Hood when low-budget productions are so much more entertaining.
Edale Lane’s Heart of Sherwood: I need to re-read this one because it had everything I could have asked for. A lesbian Robin Hood with a good story that was a fun adventure which still somehow made me very emotional. 10/10.
That one zoom-play on YouTube: I bought the novel that was made based on this play just because this was so entertaining. In a year I’ve only read about 20 pages of the book but the play was so good and at one point so full of twists I was staring at the screen with my mouth open for like 10 minutes.
I could probably include even more things from my List (I have a list where I collect all the different versions I’ve seen/read/listened to etc), but this is already too long and I ended up taking a few things out. I only included versions I’ve enjoyed the most but there’s still plenty of good ones out there.

I am reblogging this because, after the author was made aware of an error in the posting of his article (if anyone clicked through to read it on the site, there was a whole question and answer that was repeated), the error was corrected and another three questions and answers were added! I am correcting it here, but they were very interesting, so I suggest you read the full article again!

British Actor Colin Morgan: How the Queerly Idiosyncratic ‘Benjamin’ Spoke to Him

In writer-director Simon Amstell’s sweet, idiosyncratic, semi-autobiographical comedy, “Benjamin,” Colin Morgan plays the titular character, an insecure filmmaker trying to resuscitate his waning career (at least it’s waning in his mind) after one major cine-indie success. Benjamin is also doing his best to navigate a new relationship with a young French musician (Phenix Brossard of “Departures”).
Thanks to the truly endearing, multifaceted talents of Morgan, Benjamin feels like an authentic creation--one that most audiences can empathize with. Sure, he’s peculiar, has a legion of self-esteem issues and an almost exasperating need for acceptance as well as an inconvenient talent to self-sabotage the good in his life. But who can’t relate to some or all of that?
“Benjamin” is one of the better queer-themed films to come out in recent years, in large part because it eschews emphasis on the queer nature of the story. Instead, the film is a fascinating character study with Morgan slowly revealing layers and unpacking Benjamin’s emotional baggage.
Morgan is a major talent who has been appearing across mediums in Britain for many years. His London theatre debut was in DBC Pierre’s satire, “Vernon God Little” (2007), followed by the stage adaptation of Pedro Almodovar’s “All About My Mother” (2007), opposite Diana Rigg. Numerous and eclectic stage work followed (right up until the Corona shutdown) including Pedro Miguel Rozo’s “Our Private Life” (2011), where he played a bipolar gay, Jez Butterworth’s dark comedy, “Mojo” (2013), Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” opposite Sally Field (2019), and Caryl Churchill’s “A Number” (2020), to name a few.
His TV work includes, “Merlin” (playing the wizard himself), “Humans” and most recently, in a very memorable episode of “The Crown”. Onscreen he can be seen in “Testament of Youth”, “Legend” with Tom Hardy, “Snow White and the Huntsman” and Rupert Everett’s take on Oscar Wilde, “The Happy Prince.”
He’s played a host of gay roles in the past on stage, screen and TV.
EDGE recently interviewed the star of “Benjamin” about the new film and his career.
Why Benjamin?
EDGE: What drew you to this project and were you part of its development?
Colin Morgan: It’s always the strength of the script for me on any project and Simon’s script was just so well observed, he managed to combine humor and poignancy in delicate measure and when I first read it I found myself being both tickled and touched. Then reading it again and from “the actor” POV... I knew it would be a real challenge and uncharted territory for me to explore. I auditioned for Simon and we tried it in different ways and then when I was lucky enough for Simon to want me on board, we began to work through the script together, because it was clear that this was going to be a very close working relationship... it was important for the level of trust to be high.
EDGE: I appreciated that this was a queer love story where the character’s queerness wasn’t the main focus. Was that also part of the allure of the project?
CM: I think Benjamin’s sexuality is just quite naturally who he is and therefore that’s a given, we’re on his journey to find meaning and love and there’s certainly a freshness to what Simon has written in not making sexuality the main focus.
Great chemistry
EDGE: Can you speak a but about the process involved in working with Amstell on the character and his journey?
CM: Simon and me worked very closely over a period of weeks, at that time prior to shooting I was doing a theatre project not far from where he lived so I would go to him and rehearse and discuss through the whole script all afternoon before going to do the show that night, so that worked out well. It’s so personal to Simon, and to have had him as my guide and source throughout was fantastic because I could ask him all the questions and he could be the best barometer for the truth of the character; a rare opportunity for an actor and one that was so essential for building Benjamin. But ultimately Simon wanted Benjamin to emerge from somewhere inside me and he gave me so much freedom to do that also.
EDGE: You had great chemistry with Phenix Brossard. Did you get to rehearse?
CM: Phenix is fantastic, Simon and me did chemistry reads with a few different actors who were all very good but Phenix just had an extra something we felt Benjamin would be drawn to. We did a little bit of rehearsal together but because it was a relationship that was trying to find itself there was a lot of room for spontaneity and uncertainty between us, which is what the allure of a new relationship is all about, the excitement and fear.
Liberating process
EDGE: Did your process meld with Amstell’s?
CM: I’ve said this a lot before and it’s true, Simon is one of the best directors I’ve worked with. Everything he created before shooting and then maintained on set was special. We always did improvised versions of most scenes and always the scripted version too. It was such a creative and liberating process. That is exactly the way I love to work. And for a director to maintain that level of bravery, trust and experimental play throughout the whole shoot stands as one of the most rewarding shooting experiences I’ve had.
EDGE: When I spoke with Rupert Everett about “The Happy Prince,” he very proudly boasted about his ensemble. Can you speak about working with Rupert as he balanced wearing a number of creative hats?
CM: Again, this was an extremely rewarding project to work on and quite a similar relationship as with Simon in the respect that Rupert was the writer/director and Oscar Wilde is so personal to him. And then we also had many scenes together in front of the camera, so Rupert and me had a real 3D experience together. It was a long time in the making. I was on board, I think, two years before we actually got shooting so I had a lot of time to work with Rupert and rehearse. He really inspired me, watching him wear all the different creative hats, such a challenging and difficult job/jobs to achieve and he really excelled--plus we just got on very well.
Playing queer roles
EDGE: You haven’t shied away from playing queer roles. Do you think we’re moving closer to a time when a person’s sexual orientation is of little consequence to the stories being told, or should it always matter? Or perhaps we need to continue to evolve as a culture for it to matter less or not at all...
CM: That’s a hard question to answer, I think certainly the shift in people’s attitudes has changed considerably for the better compared to 40 years ago, but there will always be resistance to change and acceptance from individuals and groups whether it be sexuality, religion, race, gender--we’re seeing it every day.
Evolution is, of course, inevitable, but if we can learn from the past as we evolve that would be the ideal. Unfortunately, we rarely do learn, and history repeats itself.
EDGE: You were featured prominently in one of my favorite episodes of the “The Crown” (”Bubbikins”) as the fictional journo John Armstrong. Can you speak a bit about working on the show and with the great Jane Lapotaire?
CM: I had an exceptionally good time working on “The Crown.” Director Benjamin Caron, especially, was so prepared and creative, and made the whole experience so welcoming and inclusive. It was an incredibly happy set, with extremely talented people in every department, and I admired the ethos of the whole production and have no doubt that’s a huge ingredient to its success, along with Peter Morgan’s incredible writing.
I was also a fan of the show, and it was an honor to be part of the third season. And I can’t say enough amazing things about Jane Lapotaire. We talked a lot in between filming, and I relished every moment of that.
EDGE: You’ve done a ton of stage work. Do you have a favorite role you’ve played onstage?
CM: I’ve been so lucky with the theatre work I’ve done, to work with such special directors and work in wonderful theatres in London. I’ve worked at the Old Vic and The Young Vic twice each, and they’re always special to me. Ian Rickson is a liberating director, who I love. It’s hard to pick a favorite, because the roles have all been so different and presented different challenges, but, most recently, doing “A Number,” playing three different characters alongside Roger Allam and directed by Polly Findlay, was a really treasured experience, and I never tired of doing that show, every performance was challenging as it was.
Miss the rehearsal room
EDGE: You were doing “A Number” earlier this year. Did you finish your run before the lockdown/shutdown?
CM: Just about! We had our final performance, and then lockdown happened days later. I feel very sorry for the productions that didn’t get the sense of completion of finishing a run. I mean, finishing a full run leaves you in a kind of post-show void anyway, even though you know it’s coming, so to not know it’s coming and have it severed must be even more of a void.
Memories of performing just months ago seem like such an unattainable thing in this COVID world right now. I can’t tell you how much I’m hoping we get back to some semblance of live performance.
EDGE: What was it like to appear onstage opposite Dame Diana Rigg in “All About My Mother?”
CM: Well, I think “iconic” is an apt word for both the experience of working with Diana and the lady herself. In between scenes backstage we used to talk a lot and we got told off for talking too loudly, so Diana began to teach me sign language and we would spell out words to each other, maybe only getting a couple of sentences to each other before she was due on stage and I had to get into position for my next entrance-- we did a radio play together two years ago and she remembered, she said, “Do you remember A-E-I-O-U?” signing out the letters with her hands.
EDGE: None of us knows the future in terms of the pandemic and when we might return to making theatre. I’m a playwright myself and find it all supremely frustrating but I’m trying to remain hopeful! Where are you right now in terms of the standstill we are in and what the future might hold?
CM: Yes, I’m so worried for theatre. It’s a devastating blow. I’m sure as a playwright, you know that the creative spirit in individuals hasn’t been diminished by this virus. People are creating important art in this crisis but we need the platforms to present it and bring people to some light again out of this really scary period, but it needs to be safe and it’s a worrying time. The virtual theatre approach must be looked at I think. We need to experiment and find new paths at least for the time being. I’m involved in developing some things right now and how we can work on things in both an isolated and collaborative way. It’s entirely counterintuitive to what the family-feel and close bond of a group in a rehearsal room is like-- I miss the rehearsal room so much!-- but we can’t sit still, we must create and we must act.
What’s in a role?
EDGE: Looking back on the great success of “Merlin,” what are your takeaways from that experience?
CM: Some of the most treasured memories of my life will forever be connected to “Merlin,” the cast, crew, production, everyone! The invaluable training of being in front of a camera every day! The chance to inhabit a character and live with him for five seasons! There’s too much to list and words probably won’t do justice anyway, but I’m truly grateful for everything the show gave me.
EDGE: How do you select the roles you play?
CM: I guess they select me in a way. I can’t play a role unless it speaks to me and provokes me in some way, but ultimately it’s the characters that I have a fear about playing, not knowing how I’m going to enter into the process of living them, when I don’t have all the answers it’s a good indicator of a character I must play. If I have all the answers, there’s less scope for exploration and discovery which isn’t as interesting for me.

I don’t think anyone has said much about Calsprite. There’s not much to be said. I’m pretty sure, based on the Juju rules, that this Lil Cal probably doesn’t count as the real one - supposedly, any version of a Juju from a Doomed Timeline doesn’t count as the real thing? In any case, it’s a very mild comfort that this being isn’t a source of even more power for the already arbitrarily powerful Lord English.
Another thing that I think is interesting to note is that Dave’s use of iPhone technology marks him, in my opinion, as a poseur. While I am by no means advocating against buying from Microsoft’s competitors, but Mac vs. PC is one of those parts of my childhood, and as an actual IT Professional I’ve learned more than a little about the way that they brand themselves and the history of Apple’s struggle for market share - Apple doesn’t advertise its products as computing alternatives, or as productivity software, or whatever - Apple sells a lifestyle. Apple products are styled as the sexier, more cerebral, more artistic, more individualistic alternative to Microsoft’s products, a computer not for the Office Drone but for... well, the Hipster. Hipsters have stopped really being a thing, or at least, nobody calls themselves that any more.
Like the vast majority of subcultures, I suspect the hipster subculture has kind of been swallowed by time, its symbols expropriated by Capitalism, its center hollowed out and its aesthetics packaged for mass production, as the cynical and jaded approach to popular culture of the hipster, along with its more enthusiastic counterpart “the geek” (actually pretty well personified by John!) became more mainstream - both stereotypes are probably a part of Homestuck’s general commentary on fandom. Fandom is something I think Homestuck talks about, but I don’t think it’s something Homestuck is about in quite the same way that it’s about, say, Narratives, or Reproduction.

While Homestuck has been a story that involves some time loops, Act 4 is where it really gets off the ground as an actual Time Travel story. The thing about Time Travel stories, like the thing about Cosmic Horror Stories, is that once a story starts having Time Travel, or Cosmic Horrors in it, it’s that genre forever. This is why DND, for example, is part of a cosmic horror story, because something like 20 years ago, an adventure writer decided that there should be the Far Realm, and now it casts its sticky pall over the rest of the game’s setting.
Homestuck sidesteps this issue largely by involving all of the genres that do this to a story, and just kind of blending them all together into a genre-busting stew. Homestuck is a superhero story. Homestuck is a creation story. Homestuck is a theogony. Homestuck is a cosmic horror story. Homestuck is a time travel story. And so on and so on.

Also of note is that Terezi compares Dave to fire here, not the first or the last bit of symbolism linking him to that element. It’s pretty strongly linked, in general, with The Hero, in kind of the same way that the color Red, and the Sword is in these sorts of things.
Dave fits the Classic Hero Archetype a lot better in a lot of ways than John does, and Bro has been training him for that role since birth. On a much larger scale, Lord English has decreed from his position as the overlord of Paradox Space that Dave is the Hero who should defeat him.

Not only does he spend a ton of his time being overshadowed by cooler more powerful men like Bro, and John, now Dave even has to spend his time being overshadowed by cooler versions of himself - and that goes in both directions - both Davesprite and Dave seem to think that the other is the more real, more cool Dave!

As a Light Player, Rose is preoccupied with Meaning. She sees it everywhere, and she certainly sees where it is not (at least when she is not Miserable with a capital M). Meaning and Value - Fortune - is not intrinsic to this item, but it is instead bestowed upon it by the fact that Rose loves it, and by the work that Rose put into it. The Rabbit is a labor of love and a treasured belonging, and the Love in the Rabbit is the Light that the Seer Sees.

I’m pretty sure that John and Kanaya only talk to each other about twice in all of Homestuck, which is a bit of a shame! John and Karkat are really a lot more alike each other than either of them is comfortable admitting (which I think is probably why Dave is attracted to Karkat). By the transitive law of friendship, it seems to me that John and Kanaya would probably be pretty good friends. On the subject of the other diagonal line in the quadrangle of friendship, I wonder if Rose and Karkat talk to each other pretty much ever?

The clear indication here is a parallel between Dave and Sollux, but like a lot of things that probably didn’t go as intended with the Trolls, nothing much ends up materializing from it. I suppose that by fucking off to do nothing for the rest of the adventure, Sollux gets to live Dave’s dream for him, so there’s that.

Adorable. This is one of the happiest little moments in the comic.
So often, characters are cut off from one another by moments. They just miss each other, or literally can’t understand each other because of supernatural shenanigans, or can’t communicate with each other on screen because of the way that communication can’t happen unmediated in Homestuck.
And even when they can talk to each other, often the awkwardness and pain of communicating with other people, of trying to get them to understand you the way you actually are, instead of only seeing you one certain way, is too great, and communication proves impossible.
But here, Rose and Dave don’t need words to hang out.
They shut up and jam.
(It’s also incredibly sweet that Rose‘s actual in-person esteem of Dave is so great that she cannot restrain her own thought process. For all her joshing, she really does think Dave is cool.)

Nearly as soon as Rose has awoken and absorbed herself from the Doomed Timeline, she gets down to business alchemizing a lot of dangerous and powerful artifacts in preparation to fuck shit up. I’ve never thought about it much before, but I think it’s not hard to say that the memories she absorbed from the other timeline cause Rose to embrace her more reckless and less charitable side. She comments on her own dangerous pursuit of power, and then immediately ignores that train of thought.

BladeKindEyeWear has already done a pretty good job explaining what the Ultimate Riddle is, so I won’t belabor it too much more than he has here. The Ultimate Riddle itself is, “What Will You Do?” And the answer to it is, “Do What You Will.”
Do What You Will isn’t just the inscription on AURYN, it’s also an extremely old phrase intended for spiritual enlightenment, historically first formulated by Saint Augustine in his Sermon On Love, where he puts it thusly, “Love, and Do What You Will.” The Love that Augustine is talking about is not Romantic Love or even familial love, but Universal Unconditional Love - goodwill toward everyone and everything, to have one’s Heart’s Desire be that everyone should flourish and be happy.
Another formulation, the Wiccan Rede is, “An It Harm None, Do What Ye Will,” perhaps a more detached, declaration. In either case, the Will here is not talking about merely chasing simple wants, but an invitation to follow one’s true will, not to respond to simple passions, but to take voluntary action in accordance with who one is as a person.

Some immediate foreshadowing in here. Jade, I’m pretty sure, is one of the few people in Tavros’ life who shows him some genuine unconditional friendliness, so it’s no wonder that he latches onto her.

As long as I’m mostly focusing on the emotional dimension of Homestuck, the two major emotional beats in this Flash are the Sovereign Slayer slaughtering WV’s army, revealing the source of his self-loathing and trauma, and the death of Jade’s Dream Self.
The death of her Dream Self is not nearly the beginning of Jade’s Trauma Conga Line, but it’s definitely the first in the chain of events that leads her to finally snap out of her learned helplessness and blind optimism, and to start taking her fate into her own hands. She’s been so sure of her destiny up to this point, and now things are finally starting to get out of hand.
Also, I choose to believe that the bizarre Squiddles interlude is the first moment that the Dark Gods make contact with Jade’s psyche. They know she’s about to die, and they’re starting to communicate with her.

I'm more of a comfort song type, so that was a tough (girl) one
1.: Treasure Planet

I adore this movie! I loved it when I was smaller and I love it now. The only reason I didn't watch it to death was the fact that I lost the DVD. It's gorgeous and although the main premise is space pirates thanks to the focus on the characters it feels grounded and easier to relate to or to feel simpathy towards them. Besides Jim Hawkins being a childhood crush I could always relate to him. The feeling of being lost, aimless and the words
"- I can't watch you throw away your future like that!
- What future?"
always spoke to me. It's not an edge and teen angst fest tho, John Silver and his speech is both in character and always chokes me up and gives me hope that there are pathes that could lead to the future I want and that I wasn't abled to see.
It's the perfect movie for those who feel lost or confused and want to sail to far away planets from their current situation, those who want to be understood and given hope to.
(I could gush about the art and animation and characters for hours, but this is not the time)
Amazing background music and the songs fit well with the steampunk-ish style of the movie
2.: Ratatouille

A family classic. We even have the ps2 game and it's one of those rarities which my family could watch anytime. Besides being beautiful and having a 10/10 aesthetic (and a huge dose of food p0®π) it's a grounded movie.
The premise is as feaver dream-y and goofy as it gets. A rat learns english (or french? The movie takes place in Paris but it's either confusing or I'm just a dum dum) and thanks to an imaginary friend version of his chef idol ends up in his restaurant and makes a deal with the garbage boy of whom the chef thinks can cook and reluctantly agrees give him another chance to make the soup that was actually made by (fixed by) the rat aka Remy. So the boy Linguini and Remy has to team up where it seems like Linguini is making the soup but he is actually in Remy's control.
But the movie is actually about being an artist and coming from an unexpected place and being surrounded by people who don't support you or believe in you even if they were just trying to protect you or think that it's the best for you.
Fellow artists could definetly appreciate the movie. Whether you croche, draw, animate, sculpt, dance, act or do any kind of art I would absolutely recommend.
Le Festin is great and is on loop during dinner
Warning: get food ready because you WILL get hungry. Even if it's just bread this movie will make it taste like garlic bread just you wait
3.: Strange Magic

It's one of the controversial ones. Not everyone likes it and a lot hate it but that's okay.
It's one of those films where either you praise it to death or wonder which deeper layer of hell did it crawled out of. There is no in between. I'm one from the first category. Even my IT teacher called it a classic and I roped most of my friend group into the SM cult.
It has a certain tumblr aesthetic and feels like a fanficrion the best way possible. One of those where altho something unsuspected happens it's written well, the characters are in character it's finished and the grammar is proper as well.
It's a jukebox musical which is one of my fauvorite kind of musical, the covers are amazing and damn they can change up the originals songs aesthetic to it's opposite so damn well (Trouble - Elvis Presley)
It centers around love and I ain't no shipper nor romantic but even I was gushing over the main couple which is spoiler alert so that's all you get
I absolutely adore how the characters express themselves with their wings and body! I'm all about feelings and expressions!
So try it out and even if you don't like it you're allowed to stop. And if you like it: welcome to the fandom in this house we respect Marianne, the Bog King is a snack and must protect Dawn at all cost!

4.: The Little Prince

Not gonna lie I was extremely suspicious of this movie. I immediately categorised it as a cheap cash grab which only use sonething known and beloved because it's known and beloved so people will buy.
I expected the Emoji Movie, I got the LEGO Movie.
This movie. Hoo boy, this movie. You know, it's nothing, I only cried 4 times after all!
It's so respectful towards the material it's given. So heartfelt and creative and artistic! It's the Little Prince sequel that fits well in modern times.
In this film the Little Prince is a story that an old man tells his new young girl of a neighbour. Both of them needed a friend and it's one of those unexpected duos where the girl is forced to be mature way too early and the man is way too childish so they balance each other out and the man gives the girl (I can't remember their names god damn it) the breath of fresh air she needed.
This movie is so damn cute! I mentioned a shoulder to cry on movies and pick me up movies, this one is both! It's a bittersweet dream!
You are going to cry. So get ready.
5.: Hunchback of Notre Dame

Oh man oh God oh man oh God oh man
I'm obsessed with this movie (and musical)
It's dark and mature and definetly a-shoulder-to-cry-on movie. I love and relate to Quasimodo. Altho I'm not deformed I was always the weird girl everyone picked on and hated and I still can't understand why. I think I'm a perfectly normal person but when my mom calls me a freak/eccentric behind my back and my aunt gives me a gift with the words "since you looked nothing like the other girls on your prom..." I... I'm just more confused honestly. I'm always so damn tired and basically a hermit so thanks to that Out There hit way too close to home.
Esmeralda is a 10/10 role modell. She is a beautiful soul inside and outside. And she's romani. Which is the most hated minority in my country.
The movie deals with lust, abusive and manipulative parents, racism, religion, "ugly"ness, lonelyness. These might sound repelling but to see something similar happen to you/a character looking/being/sounding like you is worth more than life, honestly. Unless you can live through this kinship with a character, you have no idea how needed this is.
(I cried so hard watching The Grinch (2018) since I used to have Panic disorder and I'm an anxious person to see him being scared the way I do and to fiddle with his fingers and think like I do was the most comforting thing I felt in my life)
This movie is so damn gorgeous. I know I said that to almost every movie in this list but this is a biblical epic gorgeous. And of course, Hellfire is THE best Diney villain song FIGHT ME I'M RIGHT
The musical is even darker and more serious but damn it's worth a watch. It's on youtube.
6. Brother Bear

This movie is *drumroll* gorgeous. Each movie on this list is gorgeous in different ways. This is nature-gorgeous.
Pick me up movie, definetly. It's mostly adorable but they tap into some meaningful things and there are tragedies happening, my dude!
Like Hunchback of Notre Dame the main subject is "who is the monster and who is the man?". This movie shows some perspective, I tell you!
7.: Coco

It's very family oriented, so if you don't have any or have a bad realtionship with it, this movie will give you a heartache
This movie takes place in Mexico and explores parts of mexican culture.
I adore and am interested in different cultures, folklore, tradition and religion so I was head over heels really quick with this movie!
Gorgeous imagery and music. Heartfelt, that last Remember Me WILL get you
8.: The Croods

I know, it looks like a movie that made only for kids. But dude! It's about family, change and how people deal with it. It takes place in an alternative world, where animals we know are mixed together (MOUSELEFANT!! CROCO DOGGO!!) the most adorable way possible and it takes place in prehistoric times.
Oh god, this movie is full of feelings and gorgeous imagery! Pick me up, definetly! Of course, it's full of jokes but they are so witty to me!

Best Album For... Pouring One Out for Mac
I wrote a few different drafts of this album summary, and none of them felt like they really fit the impossibly large bill of accurately describing the posthumous importance or brilliance of this album. If you are a fan of hip-hop or soul music of any kind, try to give this piece of work a chance. I for one, used to judge Mac based on his early frat rap days in the late 2000s. But a decade later he came to leave the world with one of the most surprising and frankly impressive artistic evolutions that I’ve been able to witness in real time. RIP Mac.

Best Album For… Passing Through a Small Town on a Cloudy Winter Day 
Pinegrove was one of the last great concerts I got to experience before the pandemic. And it was my favorite performance of theirs from the last 6 years of seeing them play live. Is this my favorite album of theirs? Honestly, it’s not. But I still find it extremely enjoyable, and the memory of seeing these songs performed live, along with some of their classics, was enough for me to include it on this list. This is an album that marks Pinegrove’s exit from their pop punk roots. It’s still sentimental, but much more country and folk rock focused vs. anything trying to be associated with emo or punk.

Best Album For… Crywanking at 3am, Bathed in The Dull Light of Your Overheating Laptop
What if Feist and Father John Misty had a secret love child? They might sound something like Okay Kaya. Self proclaimed “Singer ~ Crywanker,” Okay Kaya brings serious BDE to weirdo art pop that she seems like she could be a plant  from the mind of Nathan Fielder. Kaya delivers with such deadpan precision as she rolls out line after line of sarcastic joy, staring blankly at our dystopian reality. “Here I am, the whole world is my daddy,” “Netflix and yeast infection,” “Sex with me is mediocre,” “I just want us to do well like Jon Bon Jovi’s Rosê,” and, “My parasite and I are blushing / In the zero interaction ramen bar,” are just a few examples of some of her memorable and biting lyrics. The entire album is both a critique and nihilistic fondness for the absurdity of our lonely technological society, not quite sure how to deal with taboos like repressed female sexuality, depression, and codependency.

Best Album For... Nodding Your Damn Head To, Feeling Cooler Than You Actually Are
I had to double check that this was an album. Clocking in under 20 minutes, this collection of songs feels more like an EP, especially with the track titles that purposefully look like file names and placeholders. But for a short album, Denzel wastes no time, furiously zigging and zagging effortlessly over Kenny Beats’ 90s New York-indebted production (ad libs and all). Kenny pulls out samples of an array of pop culture references made by Denzel (like quotes from movies and weapon sound effects like a lightsaber) — as he rotates his flow between admirable impressions of DMX, Nas, and Joey Bada$$.

Best Album For… Pal-ing Around With Your Friends From High School, Maybe Quoting Superbad At The Same Time
The first time I watched a music video from Zack Villere, I noticed the top comment said: “how did frank ocean get trapped in mark zuckerberg.” And while that definitely gets at the heart of how Zack Villere presents himself, he is not a phenomenal singer like Frank Ocean is, nor does he come off as an asshole like Mark Zuckerberg does. I would say that he is just a slightly awkward nerdy white guy who loves hip-hop production and R&B melodies. So the better question is really, “how did drake get trapped in michael cera?” This premise should not work at all, but somehow it does. This is only Villere’s second album, but he shows some serious production and songwriting chops, plus a commitment to his delivery that comes across as genuine, charming, and unique.

The Slow Rush by Tame Impala  |  Psych Rock, Synth Pop, Disco Released: February 14, 2020
Best Album For... Throwing a Silent Disco For One 
Tame Impala continues on their now 10 year streak of psych rock dominance. Along the way we’ve seen Kevin Parker master and stretch the boundaries of psychedelic production. This has resulted in his music coming as close to sounding like the best aspects of The Beatles, while also expanding into hip hop drums, R&B hooks, plus more and more electronic elements. This is an album that I was not super impressed with when it initially came out, but as we entered the pandemic and were tasked with finding small joys in staying at home all the time, I found myself going back to this album and appreciating the themes of solitude and self reflection that Parker has drawn from throughout his career.

1988 by Knxwledge  |  Hip-Hop Released: March 27, 2020
Best Album For... Pumping Your Brakes and Driving Slow, Uh *Homie* Although this album is named after a year in the 80s, the sound here is a perfect portal back to 90s golden era hip-hop, with all the gospel, soul samples, and the kind of deep bass you want to feel in your chest. This is the rare, largely instrumental hip-hop album that I find myself going back to, other than works from the legendary J Dilla and MF Doom. Knxwledge is good friends and a frequent collaborator with Anderson .Paak (in the form of NxWorries). Here we get Anderson to grace us with his presence on the track “itkanbe[sonice]”, and of course it sounds just like an authentic vintage soul sample. When I hear this collection of songs it makes me wish I still had a car, so I could inevitably damage my speakers listening to this.

Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa  |  Pop, R&B, Funk, Disco Released: March 27, 2020 Best Album For... Alarming Your Pet With Your Enthusiastic Lip Syncing
This album is a pure sugar rush. Like Bruno Mars with the help of Mark Ronson, or Calvin Harris a few years ago, Dua has harnessed a nostalgia (it’s even in the title, wink) for disco, funk and R&B, and is instantly a sexy, catchy, not-so-guilty pleasure. It’s sad that the majority of these songs are all bonafide club hits that didn’t have a proper home this year … except for my living room. And hopefully yours.

“Alternative R&B” is a contentious term, but what else would you call one of a few R&B singers cool enough to make it onto (NYC indie darlings) Mom+Pop Records?? On one hand, she brings the vulnerable and introverted lyrics of an indie singer songwriter like Tracey Chapman, crossed with the raw presence and sweet melodic delivery of a true R&B star like Aaliyah. I’d even go far enough to refer to her as the musical stepchild of Frank Ocean and SZA.

Best Album For... Going Back To Your College Town To Crash A Party
Peach Pit seem like they would be cool dudes to hang out with. You have no problem picturing them as the band playing a house show in an indie movie about college kids. And that’s because there’s a familiarity to the scenes that their songs portray, of stumbling through your 20s, either being too dumb or having too much fun to notice. It’s funny to refer to this as “Indie” rock since this is Peach Pit’s major label debut with Columbia Records. But It has all the trappings of Indie; sticky melodies, gentle reverb, an “I’m not trying that hard” vibe, and lyrics that are oddly specific enough to be interesting, but still vague enough to be relatable.

If Tyler the Creator, Alex G, King Krule, and Blood Orange all got into the studio together and dropped a shit ton of acid on Halloween, their recording session might sound something like Heaven To a Tortured Mind… And even then, you still might have trouble putting your finger on exactly what you’re hearing. “Dream Palette” is a good reference track for Tumor’s most wild and mesmerizing qualities. The biggest styles of the past half century of music have been loaded into this gleefully effective genre blender, with blades of dissonance slicing everything up, creating a surrealist sonic smoothie.

Best Album For... Mixing Yourself Another Drink This Saturday Night
Back from the dead, The Strokes return with their first album in 7 years to turn some heads and settle back into some old habits. The charming messy haired garage rock of the early 2000s still pops up here and there, but this is really a record where the group is mature enough to show you that they actually are trying, and are unafraid to take joyous swings for the fences. Julian Casablancas pushes his scratchy alley cat yelp of a voice into something more vulnerable, sunny, and sweet, like he asked for a piña colada (you know, with one of those little umbrellas) instead of a double shot of scotch before hopping up on stage… Or maybe he did both. But these days, everyone is looking for some sort of break from our groundhog day lives any way that we can. Sometimes that sounds like selling out, or depending on how you look at it, stepping up. This album is the result of a group of old friends who got together to make music they simply want to make for themselves. Now far removed from the 2000s New York scene where their younger selves were acting too cool and disaffected to care about having fun.

Best Album For... Drinking Down At The Docks, Watching The Sun Set
While I am a fan of The Walkmen, I have no idea what their frontman Hamilton Leithauser looks like or how he dresses. But hearing these songs off of his latest solo, I imagine the following: a member of Mumford and Sons if they were edgy and cooler, giving off a “cowboy rocker meets depression-era dock worker” aesthetic. That’s exactly how his music comes off to me. It’s a convincing blend of blues rock, Americana, and old timey country music. All expertly narrated by dusty country guitars and standup bass, tarnished horns and flutes, and what I imagine to be a restored saloon piano. The Loves of Your Life originally started as a collection of short stories, each about characters based on both people he knew and strangers. Leithauser then wrote the music separately, and finally came to mix and match their parts together in a surprisingly convincing fashion to create the album.

Hayley, Hayley, Hayley. You are too good for this wretched world!! After exploring more adventurous sounds and genre hopping over the last few Paramore records, Hayley decided to go out on her own. This really frees herself from the expectations that come along with being the face and heart of a wildly popular band for the last 15+ years. Thom Yorke fans rejoice, because Hayley Williams has a clear admiration for Radiohead’s haunting indie electronic vibe, while emoting some pain and darkness atop her love for 80s pop and art rock (think Genesis, Devo, The Talking Heads). This is a promising new avenue for Hayley to explore herself and process her pain and desire completely on her own. I see this new project of hers only blooming further from here.

For his 5th studio album, Perfume Genius enlists production wizard and guitar god Blake Mills, along with Grammy Award-winning arranger and multi-instrumentalist Rob Moose to create a beautiful swirling mosaic of 80s pastel pop that also packs serious classic rock grandeur. Bass guitar dances between satin smooth lines on one song to churning distorted currents on the next. Sparkling string arrangements and organs bleed together to expose a fading sunset that you’ll want to try and hold in your hands to keep it in sight. Perfume Genius is unafraid to challenge traditional masculinity, packing a 21st century queer machismo into both the quiet moments and jubilant explosions.

Best Album For... Astral Projection 101 
I mean this in the best way possible, but I think that Moses Sumney is a witch. Or maybe a wizard? There’s no other reasonable explanation for the level of creativity and wonder that he summons. This album feels like a private concert by a waterfall (similar to one on the cover), with ethereal pleas, and heavy ideas—like meditating on what lies beyond the constraints of the physical self and reconsidering how well we can actually trust memory and the mind. Sumney layers his voice to create the effect of a ghostly choir, accented by a stark intimidating falsetto that reverberates through the ruins of an abandoned temple where Sumney is the only one in attendance.

Clearly a fan of Motown and 60s jazz, Hakim could be considered a peer of Thunder Cat and Anderson .Paak’s to a degree. I remember seeing him perform at Music Hall of Williamsburg a few years ago. The performance ended with him falling down on stage (presumably from being under the influence of multiple substances). But while the song continued he popped back up and belted an impressive high note like it was nothing, drink in hand. And it’s that kind of messy beauty that also makes this album so engrossing. Like watching the eye of the storm get closer and closer, but unable to look away from the sheer magnetism that nature can wield.

Run The Jewels’ fourth outing might be the most unapologetically angry rap album in the “fuck this” year of 2020. And it reminded me that I should absolutely still be furious about everything that happened during this groundbreaking yet terrifyingly familiar year: country wide protests over the continued murder of innocent black people at the hands of the police, government drone strikes and detaining kids in cages, the state of our environment worsening—and that’s not even addressing the pandemic or election. Killer Mike and El-P are here to scream from the rooftops that our current system of cutthroat capitalism and white supremacy is killing the planet and its inhabitants, and I’m glad that they’re using their platform to continue to sound the alarm.

The cover of Westerman’s first proper album is mostly black and white, except for the title, which is scrawled out in lettering which spans the Crayola color spectrum. It’s an album that on the surface is cold and buttoned up, but when these choruses open up, the maximalist 80s power pop bursts like the bulbs of a neon sign. There’s a level of even-keeled cool and confidence in small moments on display here that makes this relatively new artist seem well beyond his years. Having seen him play at Rough Trade a few years ago (opening up for the stellar Puma Blue), the songwriting growth on display on this record is impressive. I’m only sad that there wasn’t an opportunity to have seen him play these new songs live.

Best Album For... Burning Incense and Breaking Out a Ouija Board to Talk to The Ghost of Your Former Self
This is without a doubt, a career defining release for Phoebe. Taking everything she’s learned from writing, performing, and touring with the likes of Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker (in boygenius), and Conor Oberst (in Better Oblivion Community Center), Bridgers levels up to become the truly prolific singer-songwriter she’s been telling us she would always be. Bridgers has explained her personal definition of “a punisher” as a well meaning person who’s, “just talking to you and they don’t realize that your eyes are glazed over and you’re trying to escape.” Vital to understanding this album and its central message is that Phoebe finds herself caught between the contradiction of falling victim to this phenomenon while also doing it herself, especially if she ever met her musical idol, Elliott Smith. Punisher serves as a warning to her audience that if you focus too much on trying to find yourself through other people (via escaping through fandom, drugs, toxic relationships), you’ll always feel lost and dissatisfied, without the proper self awareness to ever quite know why.

Best Album For... Preparing For A Better 2021, lol 
With this album, HAIM skyrocketed to the #1 position of family bands that start with an “H.” Sorry, Hanson! But seriously, HAIM has outdone themselves on this one. If there was one album from this list that I would dub my personal AOTY, this would be it. You might wince at any tracklist longer than 10-12 songs these days (I know I usually do), but almost every song proves itself worthy, pulling at a different thread of my heart until there’s nothing left. Sunshine State Beach Pop? Check. Blues Tinged Dad Rock? Yup! Dive Bar Country? Mmhmm! No, wait, what’s that you say, Glitched-Out R&B? Yes, yes, and yes. You can have it all, sister! ‘Cause when you’re Haim, you’re family! ;) And these three “women in music” continue to prove that they are just about the best Assorted Pop Rocks(™) act in the world right now.

This album exudes a warm vulnerability, like a comforting hug we all needed this year. On her third album, Lianne La Havas makes the risky decision to self title it, a move that artists make when they believe that it is the piece of work that they most want most directly associated with their name. It’s one thing to name your first album after yourself if you can’t think of anything else at the time, but to make a self titled album in the middle of your career, it means that you are sure about having captured who you really are and who you want people to remember you as. “If I love myself, I know I can't be no one else,” La Havas admits on the standout track, “Paper Thin.” She knows that she will meet her destiny and reach self actualization, but only through self love. And finally, I cannot overstate how breathtaking La Havas’s voice comes across on this album. The strength and control on display in her vocal tone and vibrato is quite a spectacle.

Cole all paved the way for someone from the next generation like Aminé to keep the dream alive and avoid succumbing to the “feel good, don’t think” form of passive listening that mumble rap has made the standard for mainstream hip-hop.

And to anyone who is quick to judge these beard-o’s of being boring, you’re simply not using your ears properly. Yeah, you know those two things on either side of your head? Get the gunk out of them! That way you’ll hear the choir of angels with acoustic guitars who are here to guide us through quarantine and beyond.

Fargo!
I am posting my essay on Peggy Blumquist and Hanzee Dent because I got an A+!!! I could not be happier about this grade lol. Fargo is one of my favourite shows and I was so excited when my Women in Pop Culture prof ( this is my favourite prof I have ever) said we could choose our own film/tv to analyze. I am worried that the format won’t upload properly but oh well??  Also fully aware that not everyone will agree with my analysis of Peggy but I truly believe she was a victim of her times!! if anyone reads this I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT. 
An Analysis of Noah Hawley’s Fargo
The words, “This is a true story,” spill across the opening scene of every episode of Noah Hawley’s FX TV show, Fargo. The second season uses this phrase not only to welcome the viewer into the world of Fargo, but also to “reveal that true stories are always subjective stories, which means they are constructed stories” (Redmon, 2016, pg.16). This essay will focus on season two’s Peggy Blomquist, a white, middle-class woman, and Hanzee Dent, an indigenous man. The actions and motivations of both characters are constantly questioned by other characters in the show and the viewer, as the vibe of the season deeply inhabits the dominant hegemony of America in 1979. Peggy and Hanzee’s stories of survival in a world that rejects them prove that there is great power in constructing truth that exists outside of the dominant ideology.
As mentioned above, Fargo operates within a dominantly male and patriarchal lens. From an exterior perspective, Peggy is the perfect model for the male gaze. She is a slim, white, blonde woman, and presents herself in a feminine manner. However, the male gaze is a source of extreme discomfort for Peggy. In fact, the thing she wants most in life is to, “self actualize.” This goal of “self actualizing,” does nothing to tell the viewer what type of person Peggy wants to be, it serves only to let the viewer know that she is someone who struggles daily with her sense of self. Peggy has an impossible time separating herself from her marriage, indicating that she has in some ways internalized the male gaze. John Berger’s  1972 Ways of Seeing, describes this well, “the surveyor of women in herself is male: the surveyed female” (Zeisler, 2008, pg. 7).
 A connection can be made to the conclusions drawn by 1970s American media about women. “The ways in which women were portrayed in the overall narrative, focusing on particular limited dimensions of the characters...were women portrayed as physicians or housewives? Active or passive?” (D’Acci, 2004, pg. 379). Peggy’s lack of a sense of individual self is her driving force in the series, “the relevance of the male gaze here is not in how it manifests but how agents push against and subvert its unconscious influences” (Ritland, 2018, pg 1284). In fact, what is truly at stake for Peggy Blomquist when she hits Rye Gerhardt with her car, is her fantasy identity. 
The scene that deserves the most recognition in Peggy’s story arc is from the season finale, “Palindrome.”  Finally caught and arrested for the hit and run murder of Rye Gerhardt, Peggy attempts to explain herself. “I wanted to choose, be my own me. Not be defined by someone else’s expec-and then that guy. That stupid guy, walked out into the...why’d he have to do that?” The camera angle, when focusing solely on Peggy, is similar to the angle Lou Solverson would see her from his driving mirror. This speech of Peggy’s can instantly be ridiculed, as we see it through Lou’s eyes, particularly when she describes herself as a victim. This is where it is necessary to adopt an oppositional female gaze, “the female gaze refers to work presented from a decidedly female perspective that challenges the patriarchal status quo” (Ritland, 2018, pg. 1284).
Peggy states that she was a victim before Rye Gerhardt ever was, and that Lou would not be able to understand because he is a man. “It’s a lie, okay? That you can do it all. Be a wife and a mother, and this self-made career woman, like there’s thirty-seven hours in a day! And then when you can’t, they say it’s you.” Peggy’s expressions here echo a genuine concern of the constructions presented to women. “In the 1980s, there were TV characters who seemed to be striving for feminist ideals, but for most of them—as it was for women in the real world—it was almost impossible to be feminist superwomen in a world that was still stubbornly unequal” (Zeisler, 2008, pg.13). For Peggy, second wave feminist discourse in the mainstream media had led her to believe she could, “do it all.” When this turned out to be false, Peggy realized that she had betrayed herself by internalizing the male gaze and its, to borrow Susan Douglas’s term, enlightened sexism. “Enlightened sexism is feminist in its outward appearnce (of course you can be or do anything you want) but sexist in its intent (hold on, girls, only up to a certain point)” (Douglas, 2010, pg. 285). Lou halts Peggy in her realizations of America’s hypocrisies surrounding equality. In doing so, he unknowingly proves her suspicions true. “They say it’s you. You’re faulty.. like you’re inferior somehow!”  The female gaze validates Peggy as a victim of the times. What makes this more interesting is how the three other feminist characters in the show, who firmly believe the time of inequality is over, subsequently die at the hands of men. 
One of the most compelling storylines in the show is Hanzee Dent’s. A Native American man, he was adopted by the drug-running Gerhardt family as a child. What is so appealing about Hawley’s depiction of Hanzee is that he seems to truly understand that “representations are mediations- that is, they are formed in the human mind and are human interpretations of some exterior realm” (D’Acci, 2004, pg. 375). In fact, even as we watch Hanzee betray his foster family and destroy their drug empire, the relations between indegenous and white characters in the show is the most believable part of season two. “Audiences are always aware that the version in motion on screen is but one version of some story that belongs to a group of people” (Redmon, 2016, pg.18). The hegemonic, patriarchal Gerhardt family is a screamingly obvious metaphor for the colonizer, which to Hawley’s credit, is why the depictions of indgenous characters in the show are so successful. “Hegemony is the power or dominance that one social group holds over others. This can refer to differences between and among social classes within a nation” (Lull, 2003, pg 61). The best way for him, a white writer, to portray indegenous characters, was to do so through the eyes of European settler families.
The patriarchal, hegemonic narrative of Fargo’s second season actually allows the viewer to occupy the spaces Peggy Blomquist and Hanzee Dent invented for themselves. “In the end, Hawley explicitly establishes what might have always been implied in his assertion that his story is a true story, namely, that his story is an anti-binarist construct that can tolerate alternative arrangements” (Redmon, 2016, pg. 25). Peggy’s refusal to believe that second wave feminism had achieved gender equality is the reason she is the sole feminist character to survive. Hanzee’s decision to forsake the Gerhardt family can be seen as a personal rebellion against colonization, especially considering his last scene, where we hear him speak his native language for the first time in the series. Lastly, Peggy and Hanzee’s recognition that the dominant ideology of the time was not on their side is what inspired their very empowerment.

Judges 21:1- Ruth 1:22, John 4:4-42, Psalms 105:1-15, Proverbs 14:24-25
Today is the 5th day of May welcome to the daily by both Cinco de Mayo it's good to be here with you today as we come together and dive in and take the next step forward in the Scriptures. This is a good day. Today we’re going to conclude the book of Judges and then move our way into the book of Ruth and…ahhh…comes at a really really good time. So, we'll talk about that when we get there. But first, let's conclude the book of Judges. We…we began a pretty treacherous story yesterday that left us like with one tribe missing because of Civil War and some terrible injustice. And, so, we’ll conclude that story today. Judges chapter 21.
Introduction to the book of Ruth:
Okay. So, that concludes the book of Judges, which now brings us to the first page of the book of Ruth. And like I was saying earlier, especially when we get to this time of year, all that we’ve gone through in the year, and it's been a super unique year to say the least, but also we get to this point in the year and we’re kind of moving through Judges and we just need, it’s like we need a breath of fresh air at this point and it comes and it couldn't come at a better time. We've seen anarchy. We've seen just the chaotic extremes of what it looks like when everybody does what is right in their own eyes and this kind of systematic rebellion, this wave of back-and-forth over centuries with God and just the challenges that the people were facing even just to be led. So, Ruth comes in and like a breeze and just begins to transition us into the next season. And we’re moving into new eras in the Bible, but Ruth is this story, basically it's a story…there's more than three people in it but it’s a story of three major players, Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz. These are people who, in spite of opportunity for exploitation or whatever, like choose to do the right thing, even though they're going through some really tough, difficult, trying times. And we should be able to relate. And what we see in the book of Ruth is that when people have character and they use that character and cultivate wisdom and think things through and make correct choices and follow those choices then God's faithful, He is ever present. But Ruth also gives us this breath of fresh air where we’ll get to see this beautiful portrait of women, strong and full of character in the Scriptures. And it's because of Ruth and Naomi's faithfulness that eventually King David would be born and through the vine of King David Jesus would come. And, so, we begin. The book of Ruth chapter 1.
Commentary:
Okay. So, in the book of John, Jesus is having a conversation with the woman at the well, today. So, this is a very, very famous story. The woman is a Samaritan. We've explored Samaritans before, especially in the story of the good Samaritan. So, Jesus has done a somewhat rare thing. Most of Jesus ministry is centered in the Jewish culture among the Hebrew people. So, He's kind of left and He's among the Samaritan people when He has this conversation. And it's interesting that in Jesus time among the Samaritan people they believed. They heard Him with their own ears, and they believed. He was unpacking things for them that they believed, and they believed in Him, whereas the Jewish story is a different one. The people could see something different about Jesus, but the religious leaders denounced Him continually. And Jesus said something really interesting in the conversation that He was having with this woman, “but the time is coming, indeed, it's here now, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those will worship him that way for God is Spirit. So, those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and in truth.” So, how do we do that? How do we worship in Spirit? And even bringing that question up obviously puts a massive amount of theological forks in the road. And we can go down all these forks in the road to explain this but why don't we just get simple? Are we a spirit? Do we have a Spirit? As believers, we certainly believe that we do. We would even declare that our Spirit is the truest essence of us, like it is the real deal. It’s the real us or that everything that's real about us flows from there. And if we generally believe that we are kind of made up as a tri-human being, a being that has a body and a soul or a mind or a brain that can certainly direct our body, but a lot more is going on in our head than our bodies ever do. Like, we’re thinking all of the time and then we have a Spirit, the true essence of life within us, that which has been granted by God. So, then being able being able to say, “I am not my body. My body is certainly something I must care for. It's the temple of God, the Holy Spirit within me, I must care for, it is a part of my experience and a part of my existence. But I am not only my body. I am not only my mind”, right? Like, “I am not only the things that I think about.” And I’ve been thinking about thoughts a lot lately. It’s like you could be sitting still and just kinda listen to some music or just be really quiet and just try to concentrate and be still before God or whatever and it's amazing when you get still how many thoughts are happening that you can observe. Like, how…how is it that you choose the one that you're gonna, that you’re gonna go down, the path that you’re gonna go down. There's so many opportunities to think about so many things and we choose one and then we go down a rabbit hole and it can completely change our day, it can completely change our emotional life, it can change everything. How is it that we choose the things that we do? How do we take those things captive? I’ve been thinking a lot about that and realizing I think a lot like most…I’m a thinker and I'm an introvert and most my life is in my head, but to try to get to a place to say I am not my thoughts any more than I am my body any more than I am my emotions that come and go, something true about me is here, like there's something deeper than all of these things that is the truth of who I am. And I think we all know and sense this, we just mostly stay in the realm of thoughts or feelings. And yet, at the depth of our being is a…an eternal Spirit, maybe we could say the truest part of us. So, Jesus seems to be saying here, especially in the context of the conversation He’s happening is, “it doesn't matter where you go to do your worship, it matters that you do it truthfully from the truest place in you, a place that can have union with God in Spirit.” This is the point that you can kind of branch off into any number of theological or dog…dogmatic teachings. Like go down that path. How then do I do this? Like how do I activate, how do I engage in Spirit? And in the Christian faith that can range in a number of directions from, “you can't do this because you are completely corrupt. But one day you will be able to when you are whole” all the way to, you know, “you’ve gotta speak in tongues” and that's the evidence that you’re…that you’re engaging with the spiritual realm and everything in between. For me, having walked many of these paths, for me I am…where I'm at now is just trying to find some point in my day to be still and know that He is God instead of running around frantically thinking about how He is God and getting all whipped up into every care of this life trying to invoke Him to do things for me. I'm trying to at least find someplace that resembles what Jesus is talking about, someplace where I can get past thinking thoughts about God and being still enough to know, which is deeper than thinking or feeling, to know that He is God.
Prayer:
So, Jesus we take to heart the things that You have said. We believe them. We engage with them. We allow them to enter us and our thoughts and our emotions and everything that is beyond that. We want to worship in Spirit and in truth and we can go in all kinds of directions, but Spirit and truth have to be involved. And, so, we invite Your Holy Spirit into our Spirit, into the truest places of who we are, the places that are made in Your image and we just open ourselves up to You. We’re always, always using words. In fact, we’re talking to You right now and I'm using words but there is a language in love that is beyond words, and those of us who are in love with somebody on this earth with a spouse or somebody that we love that we've been with for a long time and we've gotten to know, like, even though the getting to know never ends, even though we can never know everything about the one that we love, we have those moments where we’re still and we know and it's beyond words, and this is how we want to sit with You. The way this is described in the Scriptures is like a weaned child that his mother's breast – calm, safe, beyond words, true. So, come Holy Spirit and help us to find some space in this day for that and every day for that, that we might go deeper in this relationship that You have invited us into. Come Holy Spirit into this we pray. In the name of Jesus, we ask. Amen.

I had a lot of anxiety at the beginning of this and I’ve really had to press into the Scriptures and pray and started ignoring all news related to it but I’m still doing my part like hand sanitizing and wearing a mask when I go to the store. Anyway, Lord, please bless the mental health of Your people Lord. Help us to increase, enjoy, in n wisdom, imagination, kindness, love, peace, purity, and patience Lord. Bless us with these things. Help us to see the truth that You are in control Lord, that You are all-powerful during this time, nothing has caught You off guard. Nothing is stronger than You Lord. Nothing can happen to us. You know us individually Lord. The Scripture say that You’ve counted the hairs on our head, and nothing will befall us, nothing will happen to us outside of Your approval. And help us to lean in on that Lord. Help Your Psalms 91 promises Lord that You will keep the us under the pinions of Your wings, metaphorically. Help us keep that in our heart Lord. Help that to resonate with us and become who we are Lord that we know that You’re our shield like David said, You’re our glory, the lifter of our head Lord. Hey there DAB family this is Catherine the South African from Houston calling. I’m a little behind on my DAB listening and I had listened to April 18th today and I heard Val from Vegas. And Val am so glad to hear you, are doing so well and that everything turned out so well for you. I am thrilled to hear the joy in your voice, and you gave me so much joy. So, God bless you and I hope that’s…you just continue to get stronger and stronger. And then there was a lady called Good News Cindy I think and she called and really made me smile just thinking of all the things that she’s enjoying about COVID if there’s…if one can even look at it in that light. But it made me think about what I’m grateful for and there is so much, there is so much to be grateful for. You touched about having time to be outdoors and take…to be…take notice of things that you’d otherwise miss when you’re at work. And we’ve been spending so much time outdoors just appreciating how beautiful the area we live in is, seeing spring slowly come and…well…quite quickly in Houston, take over. But the thing that I most value is that the fact that my husband’s home. He’s been furloughed. I’m working from home part time and we just have this amazing time together and it occurred to me, the next time we’re probably gonna be sitting around, “what do you feel like doing today love” is probably going to be when we’re both retired. And, so, I encourage married copies to just love each other and just enjoy this time together because goodness knows it’ll probably be a long time before we get something like this again. Alicia from Pennsylvania calling. I just heard some woman talking about her daughter and I just wanted pray for them. Lord, just give that mother the words to be able to talk with her daughter. Her daughter had said that she hadn’t slept in four days and I feel like I can relate to that and just the amount of mental strain that that brings. Crying on the floor in the fetal position for an hour, like just reminds me of my teenage years. And my mother was so…I know…I know that those times weighed so heavy on my mother’s heart and that she would have done anything to help me. And I just couldn’t hear her at the time. And I want to just tell you that there’s hope. I’m medicated now for bipolar and I have never felt better emotionally and I would say the only main difference between her and me is that I have seen God work in my life and I just pray that she does experience something in her life that shows You that You are real and that You’re here in that You are with her Lord. Lord I just pray that You lift them up, just let them be able to put in Your arms all the things that they can’t explain that have happened to them. Lord just help them to put it aside and to find the silver lining and to find the love that does exist. In Your name I pray. Amen.

So, I don’t have any words, but I want you to know that I appreciate this group, this family and I’m praying for you out there. Been fasting and praying and so, what’s Your reason? There must be a really strong reason why He’s put me in such a trial like this. Good morning DAB fam this is Stephen from Alabama May the 1st and I just want to make everyone…and praise God for this ministry. And I hope everyone realizes the value of this ministry, the incredible immense value from the insight that we get from Brian to just this week Miss Brown singing Mr. Rogers. I wept as well when I heard that. And Miss Brown I’ve adopted you as my third grandmother. My…my grandmothers have both passed on to heaven. And, so, I’m adopting you and I don’t know that we will ever leave this side of heaven, but I can’t wait to hug your neck in heaven. I also want to reiterate what Nicole who called in who’s gone through the incredible tragedy in her life and difficulty. I too, in the nine years I have been listening to the Daily Audio Bible, I’ve gone through…I went through about four or five years of…of failures in business. Our personal income dropped about 80% from where it once was. A couple years ago I had a virus, very similar…very, very similar to this virus that’s going around now. Caused me to have pneumonia. Never been in a hospital a day of my life. Had pneumonia. Attacked my heart. Gave me heart failure. About a year ago this month I had a pacemaker defibrillator implanted. So, through that all I was…God gave me an incredible amount of peace simply because I showed up every day and pressed play. And that’s my encouragement to you. Jesus said this life is still gonna be difficult, but if you will just show up and push play, Jesus…and Brian has done all the hard work. Just push play and let God speak. God bless. Love you.
This is an encouragement for my sister who is dealing with husband that is abusive and selfish and trying to take away the child that he said he never wanted. And I understand. I went through that myself. All I can say is that God is able to do so much more than you can ever ask, think, or imagine. After my situation was over God had provided a way for me to be the sole provider of my child and also gave me an amazing husband that I love so much. And we would never have been able to have children. So, it’s an amazing thing. God works through our trials and our battles are His battles. So, put on your armor every day. Gird your loins, expect to fight, but then just submit fully to the hand of the Lord and trust Him because He will deliver you. He is your deliverer. He loves you and your daughter beyond measure. May God bless you and keep you. May God make His face to shine upon you and give you peace. May He cover you with His pinions. May He protect you. May He give you outrageous strength and eyes to see and ears to hear above all the noise that the enemy is throwing at you. And it’s in Jesus’ precious and holy name I pray for you and ask these things. I love you. Treasured Possession.

Chapter 7)It’s Okay to be a Virgin
There was nothing but shock on everyone’s faces. Bender reached towards his jaw and slowly started to stand up straight. I took one step back, but I couldn’t go far before I backed up to the railing. I was bracing myself for whatever was going to happen next. John stepped closer to me. I was surprised to see the look on his face. There was nothing. He had a blank expression. For some reason this made me even more nervous, I really couldn’t tell what was about to happen. He didn’t say anything. I knew I was going to be the one to have to speak up first, but I was having a hard time forming words.
“Sorry” I let out in a whisper. Why was I apoloigizing for that. He deserved it. Why did he have this effect on me. Making me feel small all of a sudden. I was always the one that was big and bad. I had to be the strong one for the others around me. But now I felt like I was crawling into a hole in the ground. “You shouldn’t talk to them like that” Another whispered sentence.
His face got closer to mine. I could smell the cigarettes on his breath. “I really don’t want to get into it with you Mandy” He says in a flat tone. The whole sentence takes me off guard. This is the first time he used my name. I didn’t know what to do. I froze. My emotions were everywhere in that exact moment. I was still mad at him for being such an asshole, but I was also taken aback by his reaction. It wasn’t what I was expecting. I was expecting him to begin yelling, but he was calm. My head felt like it was everywhere. 
He just kept staring at me, not saying anything. I was looking down at the floor but then I decided to look up. I made eye contact with him, and for a brief moment I felt a different feeling. When I looked in his eyes I saw hurt and pain. And in that moment I felt like there was so much more to John Bender then I could ever comprehend. Andrews voice broke us up.
“Leave her alone!”
Bender turned his head towards Andrew and began walking towards him. “You gonna make me?”
“Yeah”
I walked back over to my original seat and choose to watch this altercation from afar. Bender was now in Andrews face. “You and how many of your friends?”
“Just me, just you and me. Two hits. Me hitting you, you hitting the floor! Anytime you’re ready pal!”
Bender goes to hit Andrew but Andrew grabs his arm and puts it behind his back and soon he has Bender pinned to the floor. I don’t know what kind of move this was but I was impressed with Andrews wrestling moves.
“I don’t wanna get into this with you man” Bender said mumbled with his face pushed into the ground.
Andrew gets up releasing Bender. “Why not?”
John then gets up from the floor and fixes himself. “Cause I’d kill you, it’s real simple. I’d kill you and your parents would sue me and it would be a big mess and I don’t care enough about you to bother. “
“Chicken shit” Andrew scoffs and is walking away. I then watched as Bender reaches into his pocket and pulls out a switchblade . He was walking backwards and he was right next to my chair at this point. I could sense the anger that was built up in Bender. He proceeds to stab the knife into the chair that was next to the quiet girl at the table next to me. 
Andrew turns around and points at Bender. “Let’s end this right now.” I look over and see the quiet girl take the switchblade out of the chair and keeps it for herself. “You don’t talk to them, you don’t look at them, and you don’t even think about them. You understand me!” I smiled at the fact that Andrew was also standing up for me as well as Claire. I guess I did judge him too soon, maybe he was a good guy. Bender being Bender, he had to get the last word. 
“I’m trying to help them” He then sits down in his seat.

I had my head resting on the jacket I was wearing. I was using it as a pillow, zoning out. I couldn’t help but let my eyes wander over to John, who was now sitting at the table right next to Claire and Andrew in the front. This was the first time he has been this quiet all day. For some reason I was completely mystified by this kid. I had a feeling deep in the pit of my stomach that there was so much more to him. He put on this front but every once in awhile he would let his guard down. I just wished I knew what was going on.
I then heard music coming from the door of the library. I looked over and saw the janitor walking into one of the offices and grabbing the trash. He then looks up and makes eye contact with Brian. 
“Brian, how you doing?” He says.
Bender looks over at Brian. “Your dad works here?” You could tell Brian looked embarrassed. So what if his dad worked here. John then chooses to address the janitor. “Uh, Carl?”
“What?”
“Can I ask you a question?” 
“Sure...” Carl seemed to be interested in what Bender had to say. It makes me wonder if they see eachother every Saturday.
“How does one become a janitor?”
“You wanna be a janitor?” Carl responds in a sarcastic tone while also raising one eyebrow towards Bender.
“No, I just wanna know how one becomes a janitor because Andrew here, is very interested in pursuing a career in the custodial arts” Bender has a smug look on his face. Like he is so proud of this joke, but I look over at Carl and you can tell that he isn’t having any of it. 
“Oh, really? You guys think I’m just some untouchable peasant? Peon? Huh? Maybe so, but following a broom around after shitheads like you for the past eight years I’ve learned a couple of things, I look through your letters, I look through your lockers, I listen to your conversations, you don’t know that but I do. I am the eyes and ears of this institution my friends.” He looks down at the watch on his wrist and then he points at the clock in the back of the library. “By the way, that clock’s twenty minutes fast.”
Everyone groans, but I can’t help but smile at this. I see that Bender also finds this amusing.

The time was now 11:30. Bender was back in his original seat. He had his scarf around his head. He started to whistle a marching tune. I couldn’t help but let out a laugh and whistle along with him. I noticed that everyone else joined it. Then we heard the library door open and saw Vernon walking towards us. Everyone stopped but Bender, who had now decided to change his whistle to Beethoven’s 5th.
“Alright girls, that’s thirty minutes for lunch” Vernon says to all of us. 
“Here?” Andrew asks.
“Here” Vernon responds
“Well I think the cafeteria would be a more suitable place for us to eat lunch in, sir”
“Well, I don’t care what you think, Andrew!”
Bender speaks up, “Uh, Dick? Excuse me, Rich, will milk be made available to us?”
“We’re extremely thirsty sir” Andrew says.
“I have a very low tolerance for dehydration.” Claire adds.
Andrew agrees and says, “I’ve seen her dehydrate sir, it’s pretty gross.”
Bender begins to stand up from his chair. “Relax, I’ll get it”
“Ah, ah, ah grab some wood there bub!” Vernon says and Bender gives him a smile “What do you think, I was born yesterday? You think I’m gonna have you roaming these halls?” Bender sits back down, and Vernon points at Andrew. “You” Andrew points at Claire to see if Vernon will pick her. “And you” Instead Vernon points over to the girl that has been in the corner all day. “Hey! What’s her name? Wake her! Wake her! Come on, on your feet missy! Let’s go! This is no rest home!” The girl stands up “There’s a soft drink machine in the teacher’s lounge. Let's go!” Vernon, Andrew, and the girl all leave the library. 
We all sat there quiet for a moment, but then I realized that I could use this time to get up and move around. I stand up from my chair and I see the remaining people stare at me. I look back at them, but before they can ask me where I am going I am already in the pews of books that are in the back of the library. I wasn’t shocked when I saw Bender walk over towards me. I was surprised though when he instead decides to sit on the desk nearby and doesn’t say anything. I am not going to lie having his company for that moment was nice. Even though I was nervous that he might say something at any moment. I decided to take this moment to flash him a genuine smile. He looks up at me and returns the smile. He really was very attractive when he wasn’t saying stupid shit. He grabs a book that was on the desk. 
Soon Brian and Claire join us. Brian is sitting next to John and Claire is leaning on the weird statue that was near me. Bender has the book open to a random page. “Claire, you wanna see a picture of a guy with elephantitis of the nuts? It’s pretty tasty”
“No thank you” Claire says
“How do you think he rides a bike?” I see Claire roll her eyes at his comment. I couldn’t help but let out a chuckle. “Oh, Claire, would you ever consider dating a guy like this?”
“Can’t you just leave me alone?”
“I mean if he had a great personality and was a good dancer and had a cool car, Although you’d probably have to ride in the back seat, cause his nuts would ride shotgun.”
Claire ignored him and instead said, “You know what I wish I was doing?”
“Op, watch what you say, Brian here is a cherry” Bender says pointing at Brian.
Brian looks offended, “A cherry?”
Claire then looks over at me and says, “I wish I was on a plane to France.” In that moment she looked like she was just a normal teenager.
“Yeah? What would you do in France?” I ask her.
“Not what you think, yeah the shopping would be nice, but I want to go there and experience the culture, and just get away from this mundane place.”
“I can relate to that” She looks directly at me. “I wish I was in Italy. I am Italian and I would love to experience what my family has and see where my family came from.”
“Yeah, it would be nice, but instead we are stuck here in this stupid library, on a Saturday!” Claire doesn’t say anything else. In this moment I realized that without the pressures of her friends Claire was actually a nice person. To bad the stereotypes of high school are a thing because I think Claire and me could have been good friends.
“Oh, you did it with both Claire and the Newbie?” We heard bender ask. Her and me both turned our heads towards the boys.
“What are you talking about?” Claire asks.
I saw Brian's face go blank, and then sudden embarrassment. “Nothing, nothing. Let’s just drop it, we’ll talk about it later”
I was not going to let them drop whatever they were talking about especially if I was involved. “No! Drop what, what are you talking about?”
“Well, Brian’s trying to tell me that in addition to the number of girls in the Niagara Falls area, that presently you and he are riding the hobby horse. He is also riding it with Claire as well.” Bender speaks for Brian.
“Little pig!” Claire says.
“That's a lie!” I exclaim.
“No I'm not! I’m not! John said I was a cherry and I said I wasn’t, that’s it, that’s all that was said!” Brian seemed nervous. I didn’t really care though. I hate when people spread rumors that aren't true.
“Well then what were you motioning to the girls for?” Bender asks him.
“You know I don’t appreciate this very much, Brian.” Claire says. And I can’t help but agree with her.
“He is lying!” Brian exclaims.
“Oh, you weren’t motioning to the girls?” Bender instigates.
“You know he’s lying right?”
“Were you or were you not motioning to Claire and Mandy?”
“Yeah, but it was only, it was only because I didn’t want them to know that I was a virgin, okay?” Brian hangs his head down low and I see Bender look at him. “Excuse me for being a virgin, I’m sorry.”
Claire lets out a laugh. “Why didn’t you want me to know you were a virgin?”
“Because it’s personal business, it’s my personal, private business.”
“Well, Brian, it doesn’t sound like you’re doing any business” Bender had to add.
“Claire walks over toward the boys, and smiles at Brian, “I think it’s okay for a guy to be a virgin”
Bender looks at her surprised. Brian looks at her and smiles. “You do?” he asks. Claire nods. Bender then looks over to me.
“How about you Mandy? Do you think it is okay for a guy to be a virgin?” I didn’t have to think about it for long. 
“I think it is perfectly fine for a guy to be a virgin.” I answer. Bender looks completely surprised. I don’t think he was expecting either of our responses. I decided to milk in the moment that we had Bender speechless.

Homestuck Liveblog #181
UPDATE 181: Meat

A long time ago, I finished reading Homestuck. It was quite the long tale, and it was rather enjoyable! At the time I thought there ‘d be nothing else, because Act 7 seemed like quite the final chapter – or if there was anything, it’d be bits and pieces that wouldn’t warrant a liveblog. Yet here we are! Turns out, after this long, there’s epilogues. In plural, as you can see. Somehow, there are now epilogues and they’re said to be quite long, too. After taking a cursory read that made me read more than I thought I would, here I am, reopening this liveblog to explore the epilogues.
What I have read so far...is not particularly enticing or even likable, at least in terms of enjoyment, really, but there’s something about the writing that makes me want to continue. Credit where it’s due, yeah. Still, I’m interested in seeing where this is going, and now, I’m posting my thoughts here for everyone to see. Here we go! So, let’s start with the epilogue liveblog!
You know, before that, I should note that now the story has its own URL instead of being into the old mspaintadventures website. Kind of late in the game for this change, Mr. Hussie. I mean, the story is over, and although there’s a whooole lot of new content, it seems a bit senseless to have this in its own domain. Then again, the rest of the mspaintadventures stories were kind of...hidden away in the website? I don’t remember links to them, when I used to read Homestuck. Maybe Homestuck getting its own domain is for the better. I do wonder if this is a hint more stuff will come in the future. The extra-epilogue. The postscript-extra-content. The seriously-guys-this-is-the-end chapter.
There are two epilogues, it seems. One is meat, the other is candy. I immediately notice this is related to the cherubs’ food. I wonder if it means one epilogue will be...bloodier? Crueler? More chaotic and violent? I mean more like something Caliborn will like, while the other will be more to Calliope’s tastes. I’ll start with the meat epilogue, simply because it’s to the left.
From what I can tell at a glance, there are no images, but there are colored words, most likely from conversations between characters. That should be fine, although Homestuck was pretty visual at times, its strength was the writing and characterization.
Well then! The very first paragraph already beats most of Homestuck in terms of extremely descriptive stuff. Heck, this reminds me of Worm, with its extensive paragraphs about bugs and how they crawl on people and cause all sorts of nasty effects. I’m not sure that’s a good thing.
Meat was definitely the right choice, you think, as grease drips down your chin. The meat is cold and undercooked, so you have to grab it with both hands while you rend it apart with your incisors. It bursts in chunks, filling your mouth with blood and your throat with mangled knots of gristle and long strings of muscle fiber. You take big bites, almost too big to swallow, so big that you choke on the meaty mulch and hock some of it up into your nasal cavity. You sneeze out a gooey rope of phlegm and flesh. You stop for a moment to wipe your face, but your chin is still slippery after you swipe the mess away. Slivers of meat catch between your teeth as you masticate with bestial enthusiasm. You use your thumbnail to fish them out.
...am I eating this meat straight from the cow.
Apparently the person who is eating meat that’s almost raw is John, who I guess gained a taste for raw meat at some point. Maybe he’s trying to emulate Jade’s canine half, for all I know. He’s with Roxy and Calliope, the later providing the meat. I suppose cherubs wouldn’t know about cooking meat. Speaking of cherubs, eating meat reminds John of Lord English, and he gets so sick thinking of Lord English he decides he knows what he must do. Alright! Didn’t waste any time dilly-dallying around!
JOHN: i have to go back and kill lord english.
ROXY: u sure?
JOHN: i think so. it will probably be hard. but i think it’s the right thing to do.
JOHN: everyone is counting on me.
When is this epilogue set? Before Act 7? I thought by now Lord English was dead and gone, not that it still was something that needed to be done. Then again, it’s not like Lord English’s death was shown on screen, if I remember correctly. Maybe this is after Act 7 and he’s going back in time with his retcon powers. I suppose he’d still have them.
Roxy seems disappointed, so I suppose she knew this had to be done at some point. Given John’s retcon powers, it’s not impossible this is the last time she sees John if things go wrong. Calliope is more accepting, saying it’s John’s decision. Time to leave?
Seriously, things have gotten quite more descriptive now. Still unsure if that’s good or not.
The farewell is quite unsatisfying, and the moment passes without John being able to make it better, so he goes to prepare himself and write a note for Roxy as a farewell and/or apology. Not only to her, to all of his friends. It’s like he’s aware the chances he’ll return here aren’t that high. I wonder if John would die here at the end. It’d be quite...something!
In this epilogue, there’s a Troll Kingdom, which I imagine is ruled by the trolls who survived Homestuck, raising the grubs created by ectobiology. Dave and Karkaroni are there, Dave lives with the trolls, I suppose because his relationship with Karkaroni now includes living in his hive.
KARKAT: NOT NOW DAVE. JAKE’S ASS IS ON TV AGAIN.
DAVE: stop ogling jakes ass this is important
KARKAT: WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO TELL ME WHOSE ASS I SHOULD STOP OGLING.
Apparently the reason why Jake’s ass is on TV again is because he and Dirk have a show involving rap battles and robot wrestling, which I suppose is the natural progression from when Jake used to get said ass kicked by a robot. People like the show, and I’m already convinced it’s partly because of the schadenfreude of seeing Jake losing against robots – because no way Dirk is losing, hah
Karkaroni has a few choice words for the fake gladiatorial show, and points out this show is all about zooming onto Jake’s ass. Maybe ‘pumpkin patch’ is an euphemism. Either way, the relevance of the TV show is eclipsed by the announcement Jane is running for president of the entire Earth. Aha, truly the wretched pastry baroness’ descendant.
DAVE: i dunno crocker is just an ambitious woman i guess
KARKAT: THIS SOUNDS FUCKING AWFUL.
DAVE: oh it is
DAVE: it absolutely is
DAVE: also like
DAVE: dont tell her i said this but
DAVE: i think shes basically a fascist
...well then. Oh all things that could have been used to describe Jane from what I remember of her, ‘fascist’ didn’t come not even close. Then again, it’s not like Karkaroni had any meaningful contact with Jane, and all Dave did was call her hot, which isn’t really the epitome of camaraderie and intimidate knowledge. They both even admit to that.
DAVE: oh also shes a fucking xenophobe
KARKAT: OF COURSE SHE’S A XENOPHOBE!
...ah.
...
Did I miss something? Was there something between Act 7 and these epilogues that revealed Jane harbors xenophobic inclinations? Why am I having to ask aloud ‘hey is Jane a xenophobe’
KARKAT: DAVE, I DON’T KNOW IF YOU’VE NOTICED, BUT
KARKAT: A LOT OF HUMANS ARE???
DAVE: yeah ive noticed
Well, that part isn’t really surprising. Humanity just has a knack for looking down on other people, I can only imagine how it’d be when it’s about other sapient species. If aliens ever make contact with humanity it’ll be a social mess.
Since letting Jane claim the spot of president of Earth is not good, apparently, Dave wants to stop her, eliciting laughter from Karkaroni who is already imagining Dave running against her. No, Dave couldn’t handle that responsibility, no way.
DAVE: anyway no
DAVE: im not running
DAVE: you are
Hm...unless Karkaroni got over the many issues he had from his leadership attempt during Sgrub this can’t end well. Unsurprisingly, he doesn’t like the idea, precisely because he doesn’t feel like he has what’s needed to be a leader. It’s not that he would lose horribly – Karkaroni actually is rather popular. I suppose all of the Homestuck survivors are popular – it’s that he doesn’t feel ready and he seems to hate the attention. Understandable.
KARKAT: MAYBE I DON’T ACTUALLY LIKE BEING FAMOUS?
KARKAT: AND MAYBE THAT’S AS GOOD A FUCKING REASON AS ANY *NOT TO RUN FOR THE FUCKING PRESIDENCY OF EARTH*?????
KARKAT: NOT TO MENTION THE IDEA OF AN ELECTION IS KIND OF A FUCKED UP AND WEIRD THING TO ME CULTURALLY ANYWAY, AND I’M STILL KIND OF GETTING USED TO THE IDEA THAT PEOPLE CAN JUST... “CHOOSE” THEIR FUCKING LEADERS AND NOT HAVE THE SAME OLD MERCILESS BITCH IN POWER FOR SEVERAL MILLION YEARS.
Perfectly valid reason. I mean, it’s not something kind of inconsequential as being the class president of sophomore year in school or whatever it’s like up there in America. It’s president of the entire planet. If Karkaroni wins there will be consequences, even if he steps away immediately. Either he commits to this fully, or he simply shouldn’t run.
DAVE: ok ill just be the one to come out and say it

So Jane’s a republican. Haha! Ah, I shouldn’t touch this not even with a ten-foot pole. Nevermind that.

Somehow, I didn’t even bat an eye with Dave described part of the reason why this is personal for him is because Obama didn’t get to be president due to, you know, the end of the world. I find it in-character, somehow. This isn’t the first time Dave extols Obama’s virtues, and after quite an extensive diatribe, he says maybe Obama reincarnated in Karkaroni. Thaaaat has to be the most Dave-y encouraging thing he could have ever thought. It’s for things like these that I like Dave, haha
Apparently only humans have tried to get to high offices, because no other species has even tried. They lack ambition, and given what I remember from Sburb, that’s believable. The only species that could come close to taking part in this are the trolls, and they’re not used to elections. No wonder humans have the high spots of politics.

Ah, yeah...I miss him too. I wonder what happened to him.
The government is in charge of troll reproduction through cloning, I suppose because the mother grub isn’t ready yet. In the meantime, the balance of power will get entrenched to the point where even when there’s a functional mother grub, humans will restrict troll population so they don’t take over the planet and make the horrors of Alternia happen. No lie, that’d be pretty bleak for humanity. Last time the horrors of Alternia were forced onto Earth everyone died. No troll right now would try, buuuut yeah, that’s not going to be forgotten...for a while.
Somehow, Dave’s arguments about how Jane has zero business acumen, is sinister, and trolls are getting the raw end of the deal are actually getting Karkaroni to pay attention, until he finally caves, simply because it’d make Dave happy. That’s sweet. But yeah, this is...not what I expected what would happen in the epilogue. Well then!

DAVE: with my political savvy and economic genius and outrageous flair for subversive anti establishment messaging and propaganda, and your big loud fucking mouth...

KARKAT: I PREFER THE TERM “SELF LOATHING” ACTUALLY.
DAVE: ok lets try to avoid that phrase on the campaign trail too
KARKAT: THIS ALREADY SOUNDS LIKE A PAIN IN THE ASS.
I’m not a political strategist, but if Karkaroni is going to run on a platform about how Jane sucks and there’s inequality towards the trolls, I’m not entirely certain it’s good there’s a shadowy human pulling the strings in the campaign. Kind of seems like bad optics to me. Then again, can’t say I know where this is going so let’s just wait and see.
Yup, Dave definitely will be the brains behind this presidency. They already agreed he’ll write what Karkaroni will say, even though he should improvise and speak from the heart, like he tends to do. Not a bad idea, it’s part of what makes him endearing.
DAVE: time to talk some strategy
DAVE: we need to rally as much high profile support to our cause as we can
DAVE: but there are some uh
DAVE: “lines of loyalty” to figure out
KARKAT: WHAT?
DAVE: i mean which of our friends are going to side with us and which ones will side with jane
It’s a safe bet to think the New Wonderteam will side with Jane and the Original Flavor Wonderteam with Dave and Karkaroni. Calliope likely will stick with Roxy, so she’d be on Jane’s side. All the living trolls would go with Karkaroni, so...overall? It seems to me the advantage is clear. Dave is slightly less optimistic than me, but he does think they can get many on their side.
...okay, what happened to Jade? What kind of twisted scenario involved her to the point where neither Dave nor Karkaroni want to talk about her? I’m almost afraid of finding out.
So there are four kingdoms, if I understand this correctly: one for humans, one for trolls, one for...carapaces, I guess, and one for the consorts, which would be aaaaaall the silly reptiles and amphibians from Sburb.
Jake’s support will be pivotal, and since I’m already betting he’ll be on Jane’s side out of, you know, being friends with her for quite some time, it seems like she’ll have the edge there. Then again, it’s true Jake is fairly timid, so there’s also a chance he’ll refuse to take a side. I’m starting to think any sane person would stay the heck away from any side in this mess, honestly. These two haven’t even announced Karkaroni as a candidate yet I already kind of dread what’s coming. I don’t know, it’s just this...constant atmosphere that something’s pretty wrong. I don’t really like it.
During all this, Dave receives a call from Dirk, so he calls back to ask what’s going on. This page ends with Dirk abut to insinuate he needs Dave to cut his head off again. I see these two’s weird pseudofamilial relationship is as messed up as ever. Charming.
So, back to the more Homestuck-y stuff. John zaps back to the story, apparently he agreed with Rose what needed to be done. First he makes sure Aranea won’t be up to shenanigans, taking off that ring of life from her finger. Good! Then he stashes Gamzee into the fridge again. Good! Everything’s fine over here. John zaps to the next plot point.
Ah, I have to read just two paragraphs to know what moment is this. The conversation below confirms my thoughts. Wait, I have to get the image for this moment:

There we go. Boy was it a pain to find it now that the long outline list is gone.
I think in Homestuck they had noticed John hanging out above them, and this time they see three of them, one of the Johns being an adult version. That’s going to be difficult to explain. Questions are asked, and evil Jade is zapped away to maybe get ready for the fight against Lord English, hopefully she won’t still be evil when the time comes, even if she technically is against Lord English and wants him dead. John is here to talk with Dave, anyway. If I recall correctly, Dave was supposed to give the final blow with that sword with the Welsh name, so my guess is that John is here for that. Get ready, Dave, you’re going to fulfill the fate you didn’t want in the first place! But at least I’m fairly certain John will be more successful at this than evil Jade was.
Turns out I’m not wrong about why John is here. In fact, the narration even says this:
Dave’s eyebrows descend beneath his sunglasses. You feel pretty bad because you’re about to completely circumvent the life-changing epiphany he’s just had that you know for a fact will make him a happier, chiller, and altogether more well-balanced human being.
Pretty unfortunate, really. It sucks to be Dave.
As I said before, Jade is zapped away to parts unknown, and Dave is informed of how everyone was spending their lives as normal adults with no big problems and a fairly peaceful life. Clearly John left the present before Dave and Karkaroni started their political war against Jane. Oh well. Off you go, Dave, get ready for a fight with Lord English. In the meantime, John will gather the rest of the team.
You know, I’m starting to realize I had a lot more to say about Dave and Karkaroni’s new political adventures than about the more familiar Homestuck-y messing around John is doing with the plot. I guess it’s because, as strange as the other plotline is, it just has...a lot other stuff to comment about that hasn’t been present in Homestuck before? Hm.
Yup, Dirk immediately asks for his decapitation as a solution for the tremendous defeat he has suffered at Jake’s hands, defeat that shouldn’t have happened because, as Dave states, Jake is pretty awful at everything. Either the show is rigged or Dirk must have quite a lot in mind for him to not even make an effort.
Yep, it’s rigged. I hope Jake knows. That guy never had a break during the game, hopefully he’ll get a break now. Speaking of Jake, he has to take the brunt of entertaining everyone while Dirk takes the call in the middle of the show. Whatever he has to talk about must be somewhat urgent, if he felt like calling Dave in the middle of it.
This narration sure is calling attention to Jake’s ass a lot, I lost count of how many paragraphs include something about it. Hussie, is there something you’d like to share with the class? Last time I checked the story he didn’t seem particularly interested in Jake’s ass, or in...Jake in general, really.
It seems what Dirk is doing here is intentionally making himself the villain of this show, but it’s not because he’s throwing Jake a bone or anything. No, it turns out there are more sinister goals here, or at least they’re sinister for Dave and Karkaroni’s newfound political ambitions.
DIRK: The point is, this is much less about me, and more about providing a foil for Jake’s heroism and charisma.
DIRK: It’s very important that his popularity continues to be cultivated, to maximize his political capital.
Sounds like they were planning Jane’s campaign for quite a while, if they went so far as to make Jake the hero of their show just for political capital. I bet that was the plan all along, right from the very first time this was broadcasted. How long ago was that, I wonder? But yeah, as Dave predicted, Dirk is fully on the Jane corner of this mess. He’s fully aware of Jane’s flaws and theoretical fascist/xenophobic tendencies, I presume, and he believes Jane’s the best for the current situation of the world. Whether he’s right or not...well...until proven otherwise I believe that too, yeah.
DIRK: We’ve all had our fun here, but it’s easy to overlook the fact that civilization on Earth C is hardly a sustainable proposition.
DIRK: Just beneath the surface, it’s quite a dangerous and unstable place.
Won’t lie, that never crossed my mind at all. From the way Act 7 ended, and how happy the ending was supposed to be, I simply thought things were going to be just peachy. I’m interested in knowing just how exactly it’s a quite a dangerous and unstable place. Care to explain, Dirk?
Guess not. I hope he explains how he knew what Dave and Karkaroni are planning, then. They took this decision like ten minutes ago.
DIRK: I think your heart is in the right place, but the dude is a complete amateur.
DIRK: He’ll get eaten alive. I also have a hard time imagining he even wants the job.
DIRK: Really, it’s an awful idea for him to even run. Think about how much it’s going to inflame the interspecies tensions on this planet. Is that what you want?
DIRK: I’m happy for both of you, really. It’s nice that you encourage and support each other in this way. But you’re sending him on a fool’s errand which can only end badly.
To be perfectly honest, other than the part about inflaming interspecies tensions on the planet, that was more or less what I thought. So far I agree. Even the part about inflaming interspecies tensions sounds plausible.
You know, it’s kind of fun both sides have a savvy Strider political operative. These two are more alike than Dave would like to admit, really.
The reason why Dirk is calling is because he wants to dissuade Karkaroni from running, even if he doesn’t say it. He admits Jake is not under Dirk’s beck and call, though. Does that really change anything? Dirk may not be on Jake’s good graces, but perhaps Jane is? Either way, this is a call to subtly dissuade and it’s not going to work because Karkat is stubborn as hell once he gets his head into something and he did. Tough luck.
The call is over, Dirk is back into the staged fray, so Jake thinks about Dirk’s capricious nature.
DIRK: Sorry for the momentary diversion, Jake. Now where were we?
JAKE: Momentary??? Gadzooks man you were on the phone for half a friggin hour!
JAKE: I know you like to get the crowd all hot and bothered but we are supposed to be professionals here!
...no wonder the crowd was starting to get so upset. Half an hour?! Just how slowly were the Striders talking?
Jake pulls out rhymes that honestly reminds me of Dave’s old rapping convos from like Act 1 or 2, peppered with old-timey sayings. It’s the kind of thing that makes me wonder how Jake is popular all over the planet. It’s said it’s out of pity, but goodness, that must be a metric ton of pity. The rap fight ends with Dirk sedating Jake to take another call. Geez, no wonder you’re not on his good graces anymore, Dirk.
Aaaanyway, back to John. He has gathered everyone back at his childhood home, ready to start the discussion on how to get rid of Lord English once and for all.
Jake is sort of ruining the mood anyway by bouncing away on your old Green Slime pogo. Doesn’t he realize how dangerous that thing is? Of course not. The fool.
To be frank that thing looked fun to me, even though I wouldn’t ride it without a helmet. John needs to appreciate more the painful playground elements in his life.
It’s nostalgic to read a convo with the kids. I hadn’t realized until now I missed Jade’s goofy mannerisms. Jade was always someone I was so fond of. Heck, all of the kids are people I’m fond of, although I’m less fond of Dirk and Jake than the rest. My opinion of Homestuck may not be as high as it once was, but the characters are something I still appreciate.
John answers a question: what happens to the people from the timelines they all left? Who knows. They may have stopped existing, which I’m sure is something they’d have liked to know before, but there’s nothing that can be done about that. Better start planning so they don’t die horribly and make nothing matter, alright.
The planning is mostly disorganized and structureless, although some common themes that often recur involve you and your original three friends leading the charge, since you are the oldest and wisest, and therefore the strongest, with the exception of Jade, whose gaudy array of powers make her the most formidable of the group, bar none. Aside from that, it appears the consensus is that the melee will likely devolve into an absolute free-for-all—at least going by the general patterns of incoherent banter, shit-talking, and points of pedantic tactical disagreement plaguing the jam session.
Sounds about right. I still think Jade would be very useful in the fight as long as she’s actually there and not...getting knocked out by mailwomen-turned-winged-dog. Maybe this time there’ll actually be something about the kids getting into a fight with Lord English. I’m not really going to hope for that too much, given how Hussie is not into catering to orderly narratives, but eh. No harm in dreaming.
The reunion ends when Jake eats dirt when he falls from the pogo, and in all this there wasn’t even a word about the plan. Not a good omen for the ‘show everyone fighting Lord English’ dream, really. The kids all talk together, some of them meeting each other for the first time, while John wistfully stares at Dad Egbert who is visible through the window.
The sun is hitting the glass in such a way that you can’t see his face.
Ah, yes, how could I forget the eternal sun that was in Dad’s vicinity all the time, that’s why his face always appeared mostly blank. That’s why the sun was right beside the Homestuck letter logo, it’s always there. Besides, if it’s a bad idea to go talk with Dad Hebert, may I ask why they’re all gathered in this yard, one week before the meteors strike? I know I’d be alarmed if I looked out of the window and saw seven hooligans and one adult hanging out in my yard.
There are other things to be wondering about, anyway, like the fact John may not be seeing these as real versions of his friends. Then again, in my opinion, he’s thinking a bit too hard about this. Of course he’d feel kind of detached, simply because of the age difference. That’s hard to overcome. Is it time to leave and go possibly die? Grab hands and hope it’ll go okay!
No, seriously, why am I taking like a page for John’s retconning and like three and half for Dave and Karkaroni’s Elect-a-Troll 20XX? Oh well. Dirk is still in the stadium, apparently their shows always ends in a riot, making me wonder how are they popular with people. Public disorder doesn’t really paint a good image of you. The caller is Rose, and she’s not feeling happy.
ROSE: The bottom line is this.
ROSE: I am ascending, and it is terrible.
Is Rose reaching Nirvana? How else am I supposed to interpret ‘ascending’? It’s not like she’s not a higher existence already, what with godhood and all.
What’s going on is that Rose is being plagued from visions and a higher awareness of her alternate selves’ lives and tribulations, giving her something close to omniscience when it’s about the universe, and Dirk is going through that too, which I suppose helps explain how he knew what Dave wanted to do. That’s what Dave will have to go against? Good luck to him.
I have to wonder if Dirk being such a stalwart Jane supporter is fueled by his recent omniscience. Maybe he knows something Dave and Karkaroni don’t, maybe the warning he gave them was something he foresaw. That aside, then he also must have known how useless it was to call Dave and that it wouldn’t make much of a difference. Having omniscience must seriously suck. At least Dirk has a way to work with his omniscience in a way that won’t wreck him apart, and I’m curious what it’s going to be. That said, though, a story about Dirk and Rose having foreseen a nasty future and working to stop it even at the cost of a few valuable friendships would be interesting. I’d read that.
Any conversation that will come from this will be at the studio later. I for one am looking forward to it, I admit. It’s an interesting topic, rich with possibilities and potential for development. It’s a shame these are epilogues, though. In the end, this will go nowhere, I imagine. Isn’t it a pity when you come across an idea or a plot that could span an entire story, but you know it’s not likely to come to fruition? Real shame, that.
I think I’ll stop for now. I have read only seven pages out of forty-three or so, but this should be enough for now. I can’t say I have been...enjoying this. I’m interested, but not really happy so far. Maybe it’s because a couple rather questionable things have come out of the blue and for the life of me I can’t make them fit with the characters or the story. Strange.
Also, something about the writing style is...off. It’s far more descriptive than Homestuck usually was. Most of the time it’s nice, other times I wonder if it was necessary. Still, I wonder where this will go, so at least the epilogues have that on its favor. Just for that, I think liveblogging it will be worth it.
Still, these epilogues are non-canon, aren’t they? If they’re canon can you please tell me that? Thanks, readers! So, for the time being, this update ends here.

Dracula the Undead: Author’s Note Part 1 Snark

Summary: An aperitif of the clusterfuckery that is to come. This is a long-winded and self-congratulating author's note.
Both writers claim that their novel stays true to Bram Stoker's vision even though it contradicts and re-writes the original story.

~ Dacre's Story ~
Since I am a Stoker, it is not surprising that I have had a lifelong interest in the work of my ancestor.
At the risk of sounding like a complete ass...
This "interest" is financially motivated. 
Bram’s youngest brother, George, believed to be the sibling with whom he had the closest relationship, was my great-grandfather, so I am Bram’s great-grandnephew.
"Which means that I am related to Bram Stoker and can write an 'official' sequel to Dracula. And that will make me a shit-load of money."
In college, I wrote a paper on my great granduncle,
I'm getting the impression that is statement is supposed to make Dacre Stoker sound unique...
Even though there are plenty of other college students who have written an essay about Bram Stoker or Dracula for an assignment.
For instance, yours truly did a PowerPoint presentation on Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley for a class in college. 
examining what may have motivated him to write Dracula.
Again, this isn't groundbreaking stuff. 
Many people have published articles or books discussing Dracula. 
Scholars like Professor Elizabeth Miller have dedicated their lives to studying it. 
My research opened my eyes to how, from my family’s perspective, the history of the book Dracula, is pretty tragic.
"And before I give everyone a history lesson, I'm telling you all this so I can justify butchering my ancestor's work."
Bram Stoker died without ever seeing Dracula become popular. The sales of the novel were so limited at the time of his death that his widow, Florence, thought she would never benefit financially from Bram’s “wasted” seven years of research and writing. With Bram’s other fiction and nonfiction books out of print, Florence was convinced she would live out her days on a tight budget.

Actually, that isn't true. 
According to scholar John Edgar Browning, the majority of critics gave positive reviews. 
His findings were published on February 1st, 2012. 
It is important to note Dracula: The Undead was published in 2009.
But in an interview in 2013, Dacre Stoker said this: There is this statement that used to kind of drive me crazy—‘Dracula was met with mixed reviews when Bram was alive’. 
He then briefly discusses Browning’s research.
Which means that Stoker knew about Browning’s findings...
But he ignored it and printed misinformation. 
Dacre adds that it was only "ten years after Bram’s death" when Dracula became popular.
Posthumously, Bram started to receive recognition as the progenitor of the modern vampire/horror novel.

Not to diminish Dracula and its impact on popular culture...
But it is not the first influential vampire novel. 
Varney the Vampire is. 
Dacre Stoker goes on to talk about Florence Stoker (Bram Stoker's wife) and her legal dispute with the creators of Nosferatu.
He also states that Dracula became public domain in the U.S.A since 1899 because Bram didn't complete a requirement so Florence Stoker had to live off the U.K. royalties.
With the U.S. copyright lost, Hollywood, corporate America, and anyone else was free to do whatever they wanted to Bram’s story and characters.
This is the part where the reader is supposed to boo and hiss at Hollywood...
And then give Holt and Stoker a standing ovation for writing Dracula the Undead. 
Dacre Stoker talks about how his family wasn't asked for approval of "any of the hundreds of incarnations of Dracula over the next century."
My father’s generation had a negative feeling for all things Hollywood and Dracula.
Which is understandable given what happened. 
But after reading the author's note...
The history of Dracula is being used in order to deflect any criticism.
And to justify bastardizing Dracula under the pretense of honoring Bram's original vision and righting a past wrong. 
—except, of course, for Bram’s original novel.
So we have two options:
They knowingly endorsed a novel that defamed Bram and mocked the original novel. 
Or they loved Dracula and would be appalled that Bram was dragged through the mud and the original lore was ridiculed. 
According to Ian Holt in an interview in 2010, he says that “Bram’s bitter demeanor was even worse in real life than we depicted in the novel.”
And in the same interview, Holt passively aggressively says: “Do your research. The fact that the chapters with Bram were written almost completely by Dacre in consultation with his family means nothing to them.” 
So yeah...
I’m leaning towards option number one. 
I didn’t write about these issues in my college paper, but they were always on my mind.

Dacre Stoker admitted that he didn't read Dracula until he went to college.
Stoker says it was "a shame" that his family was unable to "control the legacy of my great-granduncle" and  "lay claim to the character of Dracula."
It was many years after college that I met an interesting character, Ian Holt.

Stoker doesn't realize that calling someone "an interesting character" can be a veiled insult.
Ian is a screenwriter who has been obsessed with all things Dracula since childhood.
A lot of people love all things Dracula.
Doesn't mean that they are a talented writer.
Ian, being a true idealist, had a plan that inspired me to not accept the frustrating history of Dracula.
"He was my knight in shining armor!"
He wanted to change history.
History reveals that change isn't always positive. 
Sometimes it is negative. 
Ian’s plan was simple: to reestablish creative control over Bram’s novel and characters by writing a sequel that bore the Stoker name.

To my surprise, none in my family had ever considered this.
Translation: "Why haven't any of my family members tried writing a novel? It's the obvious solution to the problem." 
And it didn't occur to Stoker none of his family members had any interest in being a writer. 
It really pisses me off when people act like writing any kind of fiction is easy or that anyone can be a writer. 
While any literate person can write, not everyone can be a writer. 
It requires talent and passion along with the desire to learn about the craft and improve your writing skills.  
Intrigued, I decided to join Ian on a roller-coaster ride as coauthor.
And for readers, it is a nightmarish ride where clusterfuckery gallops and a literary classic is violently raped.
In writing Dracula the Un-Dead, I felt a strong sense of duty and familial responsibility.
"It isn't because I wanted to piss all over my relative's legacy and make a shit load of money."
I hoped to work with Ian to represent Bram’s vision for the character of Dracula.
Bram's vision should be called Sir Not Appearing in This Novel.
We aimed to resurrect Bram’s original themes and characters, just as Bram conceived them more than a century ago.
The Dracula characters appear in name only.
They are cast in an unfavorable light. 
As for the themes?
They are discarded. 
So many books and films had strayed from Bram’s vision—
It is extremely rare for adaptations to stick extremely close to the original story. 
Usually, adaptations take artistic license with the source material. 
And just because an adaptation or a retelling differs from the original story, doesn't mean that it will automatically suck. 
For instance, I like films, mangas, and video games that are inspired by/loosely based on Dracula. 
and thus our intent was to give both Bram and Dracula back their dignity in some small way.

Dracula is depicted as a misunderstood man with fangs who is every woman's erotic dream. 
And readers are supposed to despise Bram. 
I think Bram would be proud that a family member has taken this initiative, and finally done justice to the legacy he created.

Bram would be livid that his work was bastardized and that his descendant depicted him as a desperate and a talentless hack.
~ Ian’s Story ~
I am not ashamed to say it, I LOVE horror films.
Ah, all-caps.
How I loathe thee.
A lot of people like horror and it is a popular genre. 
So that doesn't make you unique.
And horror movies are no longer considered depraved or scandalous.
Holt mentions that his favorite horror movie as a kid was Dracula (1931).
When I was ten years old, my mother bought me a record for Halloween with Christopher Lee narrating the story of Dracula by Bram Stoker. Reading that record sleeve changed my life, for it was then I learned that Transylvania was an actual place and that Dracula was a historical figure.
Where do I begin?

Ian was "inspired" by the audiobook that he decided to read Dracula.
I was surprised at how different the novel was from the films—and I had seen every Dracula film ever made.
"Who knew that Count Dracula swings both ways? Or that Mina is an assertive and intelligent woman and not a stupid Dracula fangirl?"
The novel was more intelligent, astute, and dark.
While this literary abomination is a cash-grab filled with gratuitous gore and sex.
The novel had more intricate and exciting characters than I could have ever imagined.
While Dracula the Undead has depraved lesbian vampires and a whiny prat along with a handsome and misunderstood vampire who only wants tru luv.
I felt cheated by Hollywood. I vowed revenge!

I get it, Holt and Stoker. 
I'm supposed to hate Hollywood but adore your literary travesty. 
Fifteen years later, my opportunity came.
And Dracula fans wished that it never arrived.
Flipping channels one night, I came upon a program on the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
I'm getting the sneaking suspicion that this story will result in name dropping. And Holt insisting that he is a scholar.
On the program, Coppola held up the 1972 book In Search of Dracula written by Fulbright Scholars Professor Raymond McNally and Professor Radu Florescu (Prince Dracula’s actual descendant).
Vlad the Impaler is also known as Vlad III, Vlad Dracul or Vlad Dracula. 
Sometimes he is referred to as Vlad III of Wallachia or Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia. 
But I have never heard of any scholar referring to Vlad III as "Prince Dracula."
A quick Google search reveals only this book and a YA novel called Hunting Prince Dracula. 
Every time I see Vlad III being mentioned as "Prince Dracula", I can't keep a straight face. 
Because it reminds me of Beni Gabor calling Imhotep his "prince." 
Coppola had used the professors’ research of the historical Prince Dracula’s life as inspiration for the opening sequence of his film.
And he discarded the rest of it in order to make Dracula a guy who is looking for his one tru luv.
Before taking a breath I was on a plane to Boston College to meet the professors. After showing them some notes on the screenplay I planned to write based on their book,
"I smelled an opportunity to make some money!"

"They were impressed my awesomeness!"
The friendship I forged with McNally and Florescu has borne fruit in many ways. I soon began traveling with the professors giving lectures on the impact of Bram Stoker’s novel on our culture.

There is a BIG difference between being a fan, a historian, and a documentarian. 
A quick Google search reveals that Ian Holt has not published anything in an academic journal.
However, one of the first things that pop up in an internet search is this. 
This garnered me an invitation to speak at The First World Dracula Congress in Bucharest, Romania, in 1995—a gathering of Dracula/horror scholars from around the world.
I don't doubt that Holt went to The First World Dracula Congress.
But I don't think he was a speaker.
Elizabeth Miller wrote a report about the gathering. 
And Ian Holt isn't mentioned among the speakers. 
Holt went sightseeing in Romania and how he made "the dream I had as a ten-year-old come true."
Thanks to the friends I made at the First World Dracula Congress, I was asked to join the Transylvanian Society of Dracula—a scholarly organization dedicated to the study of all things Dracula.

We get it, Ian Holt. 
You want us to think that you are a scholar because you are friends with scholars and historians. 
But I don't think a scholar would be constantly name-dropping.
Through friends in the society I met Professor Elizabeth Miller, the world’s foremost authority on all things vampire, Dracula, and Bram.
"And I'll use my scholar friends as a shield to deal with criticism."
Professor Miller asked me to speak at the Dracula convention in Los Angeles in 1997, where we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the release of Bram’s novel.
According to a report on the 1997 Dracula convention in Los Angeles, Holt isn't mentioned as being one of the speakers.
Holt says during the convention he came up with an idea to write a sequel to Dracula. He admits that a Dracula sequel isn't a new idea.
But a Dracula sequel was never written with "input from a member of the Stoker family."
Holt goes on to say that "securing that input became my goal" and contacted the Stoker family patriarch.
Still scarred by the Nosferatu copyright affair and years of being ignored and abused by Hollywood, the members of this generation of the Stoker family wanted nothing to do with me.
I could be wrong...
But I'm getting a strong feeling that Holt was miffed that some members of the Stokers didn't want to touch him with a ten-foot pole. 
Especially since Holt said the Stoker family at "long last" supported the idea for an official sequel.
But I wouldn’t give up.

Holt says how he "kept building up my film-writing résumé and Dracula connections." He eventually meets Dacre Stoker.
I pitched him my sequel idea, which at the time I had been planning as a screenplay. Dacre was enthusiastic and suggested that the proper way to proceed was with a book first.

If it is a novel, then it will be proper lit-ra-choor.
Because a movie wouldn't be "deep" or "elevated". 
Both Dacre and Ian agreed to a writing partnership.
And Dacre contacted his family members and presented them with the sequel proposal.
Once it was understood that this would be a labor of love,
"We gleefully shit all over the original lore and insist that it was all a lie."
our intentions honorable, and that our plan was to restore to the world Bram’s original vision and characters,

If that was the case, then:
The original lore of Dracula wouldn't be repeatedly violated.
The Crew of Light wouldn't be depicted in an unflattering light.
And Bram Stoker wouldn't be vilified. 
the Stokers offered support, at long last.
Translation: They finally appreciated my genius!
Dracula the Un-Dead is the culmination of my lifelong dream and years of hard work.
"And why is the Devil laughing and doing a victory dance?"
It is my gift to every horror nut out there.
If by "gift", you mean a literary turd, then I agree with you.
My greatest wish is we have created a book that is close to Bram’s original gothic vision
"Close to Bram's original gothic vision"? 
Hell no! 
It contradicts the original story and reads like a shitty Coppola's Dracula fanfic. 
—while modernizing it at the same time.
By stealing a twist from The Empire Strikes Back and copying a scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Believe me, I realize how lucky I am.
And readers will regard this novel as a plague upon mankind.

I'm not convinced that Dacre or Ian regard Bram as their hero.

Stoker wasn't the only one who invented modern horror.
Some of the other writers were Edgar Allen Poe, Ann Radcliffe, Sheridan Le Fanu, Algernon Blackwood, and H.P. Lovecraft.

Defense lawywer Todd Spodek said a plea deal of one to three years should suffice for Sorokin. I wasn’t expecting to keep this blog up for this long - honest. It started as a joke website shared with my friends on our mutual awe and fascination over namely Anna Delvey and other cult heroes and maybe it could evolve into a place to put my stream of consciousness dribble on cult film reviews or wither away on the internet. (It will still wither away on the internet). It’s been a week, and there’s been SO MUCH out there on the interwebs on just Anna alone and the grifting think pieces she’s inspired and more is being written and produced and inspired on pure grift. And everyone won’t stop scamming! Think of this as your encyclopedia to the scammer age. I don’t condone scamming. I am archiving the weird stories about it.
It’s strange when you find something relatable about scammers and thieves even though their job description is literally trying to take something away from others. Is this news telling us we’re in a scamming economy?
Tom Gara writes an essay for Buzzfeed News about the golden age of grifting and how our culture encourages it. We’re creating jobs out of it! The most obvious sounding scamming job that Gara mentions is “social media influencer,” but I don’t think it’s really that ubiquitous. Being an independent social media influencer doesn’t pay; 96.5 percent of all of those trying to become YouTubers won’t make enough money off of advertising to crack the U.S. poverty line and you’d have to sell merchandise to make money, according to some dope infographics on the Outline. If someone told you to work this job, would you think it’s a scam?
Alternatively, if getting to a million followers is too much work but you like to write a little, you could write fake reviews for Amazon. People do this and it’s becoming harder and harder to detect which reviews are real, reports Nicole Nguyen for Buzzfeed News. Honestly I can’t even tell anymore when ordering from Amazon what’s authentic or what’s a cheap knock off. Scammer economy is where you leave authenticity at the door.
Not a writer but still want to become a scammer? Become a court-appointed legal guardian for senior citizens and run their estates! I’m kidding! Please don’t do this! Watch Last Week Tonight with John Oliver where John Oliver Guards Against Elder Abuse instead! You can read a write up about the episode on Rolling Stone. The fraud Oliver unveiled is insane and unconscionable.
I haven’t even gotten to multilevel marketing schemes. If someone offers you Lularoe or wraps, run away. Like seriously why are we scamming each other? The earth isn’t round, it’s a pyramid.

Interview From a Tutoring Center owner (Part 1)

Interview Question and Answer
1.       What do you do for a living?
I am an Ontario Certified Teacher and Founder of York Region Tutoring.
2.       What were some obstacles that you had to face as a leader?
There are several obstacles to opening, growing and maintaining a business. Initially, playing the role of administrator, secretary and tutor simultaneously while growing the business to a point of profitability where I could hire then employees. Then, hiring the right employees was in an of itself an of itself was an obstacle, as younger tutors, while more relatable to students, tend not to have the same skillset as educators with more experience - even to this day, it can be a challenge to find the right balance. Most recently, transitioning or tutoring program to online in response to COVID, but we were mostly set up for that anyways.
3.       How do you motivate your subordinates to work harder and better?
For my tutors, I give them a lot of creative licence to conduct lessons autonomously than most other tutoring centres might. Too much oversight, especially with younger tutors, creates anxiety and vitiates their quality of work. We provide a comfortable communal environment for tutors to work with students so that their experience at the centre motivates them to work optimally.
4.       What was the most difficult thing you faced while running this business?
Definitely the fiscal side of things were dreadful in the first couple years of opening. Rent, renovations, utilities, furnishings, and other expenses - they really added up, and a lot of these costs are running overhead costs so they don't end. I was essentially keeping the centre over water with my own tutoring for about a year before our revenues comfortably surpassed our costs.
5.       How do you believe your leadership style differs from the other businesses that run the same one as you? How effective is it and why?
Hands off yet wholly involved. Unlike most other tutoring centres, I operate mine with strong background knowledge in every subject Grades 8-12 aside from French, History and Computer Science. I demand that my tutors email or text me with any questions that they have difficulty with during class time with students. But in order for them to feel comfortable asking their boss for help, I have to make them feel comfortable - and so my interactions with them are completely non-judgmental and hands off so that they're in a headspace that they can ask me for help. It's a really sensitive thing.
6.       Since you run a tutoring center where there are one on one tutoring services, what are ways that you collaborate as a team to help students?
When I hire employees, among other requirements is one where they have a strong desire to help students, and even though tutoring is one-on-one, helping students is very often a team effort. If I, for example, don't know how to do a particular problem, or I want fresh eyes on a problem so that I can maybe glean a different method, I'll call or email a tutor who specializes in that grade and subject for some help. That help is definitely reciprocated when a tutor needs help as well. Actually, in 2019, I began providing tutors with yorkregiontutoring email accounts so that they can interact with each other and not just myself.
7.       While collaborating with your team of tutors, what types of conflicts have you faced and how did you deal with them?
There are some individuals who let pride and ego get in the way of learning and growing as tutors. This is especially prevalent when a tutor does not want to accept that their method to approaching a problem is not viable, and when I say viable, I mean a teacher at a school will not accept it as a solution. Teacher's often want solutions worked using a particular method, and there have been a number of occasions where tutors refuse to indulge in those methods because they feel that they are not the "best" method. It's interesting because corresponding with a tutor who has this mindset, it's often near impossible to have them understand the difference between the "best" method, which theirs may be, and the method the teacher wants. At this point I can only chalk the unwillingness to appreciate this difference to ego. How do I navigate these situations? Sensitively. In the end, I only care that the tutor complies and follows through with the teacher's method in the future, and if I have to stroke the tutors ego, then I will.
8.       How have you, as a leader, changed ever since you have started the business up until now? What caused those changes?
I was far less flexible when I first started the business. I think that was a result of the stress I experienced in order to make ends meet. I had my vision regarding how we would become successful, and I'm sure that, to some degree, I imposed that vision onto my secretary as well as my tutors. My secretary once told me, when I sought some constructive criticism about the centre, that the environment would feel a little tense. While I didn't actively micromanage anyone, I think my demeanour as well as perhaps the tone in my voice when communicating was responsible for creating that atmosphere. Form that point, about a year a half into opening, I begin actively tempering myself, behaving overtly at ease so that that sense of stress would not transfer over to the people around me. I think that's also partly responsible for how I currently conduct business.
Explanation
             I asked these questions for a very simple reason: to gain insight on what it is like to be a leader from someone who has taken time and effort to make it up to that level. I asked multiple questions on leadership, motivation, resolving conflict, teamwork, and change; all of which are important to understand to become a great leader. John, who is the owner of a successful tutoring center has decided to partake in this interview. His answers show the importance of learning about business leadership, and how it actually connects to real-world situations whether it is the largest and wealthiest leaders in the world or not. To become a successful leader, you need to accept change and have the ability to solve problems by working with others as a team.
             An important question that I have asked him would be number 6, which proves that teamwork skills are beneficial to any company. You would think that business that offer one on one tutoring or and one-on-one service where each employee deals with one client at a time, would require little to no teamwork. However, teamwork is extremely important, because, as what John said, “helping students is very often a team effort”, and goes on to explain that when he has a particular problem brought by one of his students that is out of his skillset, he approaches his subordinates and works together to solve a problem. This is almost a great example for synergy, where the company uses their resources to the fullest no matter how many tutors John collaborates with, leading to greater achievements that allows them to solve many different problems. John promotes an amazing culture of synergy, which is how they can easily solve a problem that a student needs academic help with, and providing his subordinates with company emails to chat to each other about work-related things if they do not want to have the pressure of their boss always having an eye on them. In question 7, I address that there may be conflicts in a team, but a good leader is able to workaround those conflicts. John explains that the type of conflicts he faced were the tutors’ “pride and ego”. His answer basically suggests that the tutors, who are young university students have difficulty accepting change and flexibility. He explains how they are so filled with their pride and ego that they are unable to explore different approaches to certain problems simply because they have only practised with a method they are familiar with. Due to this conflict, they may teach the student the wrong things that is out of the student’s expected skill, or if it is mathematics, that specific method to solve a problem that the tutor taught would not be allowed to use on the tests and exams as per their teacher’s requirements or curriculum. The way that John tackles these problems is by approaching his tutors and explaining the importance of flexibility when teaching methods that a teacher specifically wants the students to use. He would then go on to “stroke their ego” if they do not comply and thus explains the consequences such as being dismissed if his tutors continue to do those actions.
             The next set of important questions revolve around leadership and change. Change is the most important thing whether you are new to a company or if you are starting up a business. It would be most prevalent when you are new to a totally different culture, however, as a rising leader and business founder, it is a different story. Business founders have to be the one to change the culture and possibly their leadership style as well, depending on what works best through many months of experimentation, looking closely at profits. In question number 5, he explains that his leadership style is unique in a way that it is “hands off, yet wholly involved”. This suggests his leadership style would currently be a mix of laissez-faire and autocratic, however, it seems quite contradictory. To look more into his answer, he is open for tutors to come to him for help and support which shows that he can inspire his subordinates to teach students in many different ways to ensure that they are providing the maximum amount of performance no matter what client it is and what their situations are. Transformational leadership seems to be prominent based on his answer, due to how he inspires tutors with his knowledge to do much more, even knowing that they have intrinsic motivation. On his laissez-faire leadership style side of him, Transformational leaders can be known to be called “quiet leaders”, which makes sense because laissez-faire leadership style is all about being apart from the team. However, John still works with others due to the importance of teamwork and motivates them through inspiration. He is definitely strict with his rules and does not change things based one one’s input, but it does not make him an autocratic leadership due to John providing the same type of tutoring services as his subordinates, and ability to work as a team and providing a culture of empowerment. He does, however, explain in question 8 that the major changes that he had to make as a new leader was his flexibility and communication skills. He created communication barriers within himself by explaining his tone of voice and stress which might have shifted the employees’ motivation, and made it seem he simply did not want to communicate with others. It showed that he did not want to work as a team, which could suggest that he was more of a laissez-faire leader back then, and then decided to change it due to his tutors possibly being unmotivated and uninspired to achieve a high work performance.
             As for motivation, John hires people who show that they are intrinsically motivated, which was also one of Google’s motivation strategies so that they don’t have to resort to using money for motivation. Another way that John motivates his employees is through external motivation, which is providing them with full autonomy when they are tutoring a student. This motivates the employees because if they are given freedom to approach the job in their own preferred way, it makes them feel comfortable in the workspace and feel a sense of accountability. He even explains how putting too much pressure on his young tutors who are still in school can make them feel stressed in the workplace easily and lower their work performance. This is evident in many different jobs and workplaces.
             This interview with John proves that understanding how to become a good leader can lead to success in the business whether you are a manager or business owner. You definitely need to adapt to change and make sure to take note of what is bad for the business and what is good. Motivation is key in the workplace, both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Knowing what leadership style that is suited for the firm, can allow leaders to be successful as they work out the best way to lead their employees who have different perspectives on the company. Lastly, teamwork skills can provide a positive culture of synergy in the workplace, allowing the team to maximize performance based on each individual’s set of skills.
