Iceland cancels commercial whaling this season on animal welfare grounds, hailed as ‘a major milestone in compassionate whale conservation’ by HSI / Europe
Minister Svavarsdóttir ends decades of senseless whale killing and begins a new chapter in Iceland’s relationship with whales

BRUSSELS ― As news breaks that Iceland has cancelled this season’s commercial whaling on animal welfare grounds, global animal protection charity Humane Society International says it is thrilled and relieved at the announcement that will spare hundreds of whales from agonising deaths.
It urges the Icelandic government to make it a permanent ban.
Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Svandís Svavarsdóttir announced that Iceland’s whaling vessels will not kill any whales this season due to the conclusion that “the fishing method used when hunting large whales does not comply with the law on animal welfare.”
The suspension lasts until August 31st, which effectively cancels this season’s whale killing.
The minister’s statement continues:
“It is necessary to postpone the start of the whaling season so that there is room to investigate whether it is possible to ensure that the hunting is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Animal Welfare Act.”
Ruud Tombrock, HSI / Europe’s executive director, said:
“This is a major milestone in compassionate whale conservation.
Humane Society International is thrilled at this news and praises Minister Svavarsdóttir for ending the senseless whale killing, which will spare hundreds of minke and imperilled fin whales from agonising and protracted deaths.
There is no humane way to kill a whale at sea and so we urge the minister to make this a permanent ban.
Whales already face so many serious threats in the oceans from pollution, climate change, entanglement in fish nets and ship strikes, that ending cruel commercial whaling is the only ethical conclusion.”
The announcement follows the Minister’s op-ed last year in which she said she saw little reason to permit whaling after 2023.
Publication last month of an independent report by the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority ― commissioned by the Minister ― revealed some whales killed in Icelandic hunts had taken up to two hours to die, with 41% of whales suffering immensely before dying for an average of 11.5 minutes.
Kitty Block, CEO of Humane Society International, said:
“For those of us who have been campaigning for many years to end commercial whaling, to see the day that Iceland decides to stop killing whales and retire its harpoons for good, is truly historic.
Economic factors have certainly played a significant role in the demise of this cruel industry - with little demand for whale meat at home and exports to the Japanese market dwindling - but it is the overriding moral argument against whaling that has sealed its fate.
Harpooning these magnificent giants not only causes unjustifiable suffering to those whales who are killed but also unimaginable distress to the rest of their pod who witness their family members being chased and slaughtered.
Iceland is already one of the best places in the world to go whale watching, and the country stands to attract even more ecotourists now that it has abandoned whaling forever.
The world now looks at Japan and Norway as the only two countries in the world to still mercilessly kill whales for profit.”
FAST FACTS:
The International Whaling Commission agreed to enact a global moratorium on all commercial whaling in 1986.
Iceland left the IWC in 1992 but returned in 2002 with an exception to the moratorium, despite objections from multiple nations.
Since re-joining the IWC, Iceland had killed more than 1,500 whales, including fin whales.
Iceland suspended hunting fin whales in 2016 due to a declining market for whale meat in Japan.
Hunting resumed for the 2018 season when 146 fin whales were killed, including a pregnant female and a rare fin-blue hybrid whale, plus six minke whales.
A single minke whale was killed from 2019-2021, and 148 fin whales in 2022.
Fin whales are classified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as globally vulnerable to extinction despite decades of recovery since the commercial whaling moratorium.

Thank you for being so open in your beliefs towards animal welfare and the relationship between humans and animals. I have basically the exact same stance, and it's awesome to see someone even better educated than myself put these thoughts to words so eloquently. Thank you for being so awesome! 💕
Thank you for listening (or reading rather) ❤️. I'm very passionate about animals and nature, so seeing them treated like props for people's entertainment just makes me so angry. There are so many ways to appreciate and safety interact with domestic animals and wildlife, but seeing the glorification of animal abuse on social media is infuriating and depressing, and I know a lot of people feel similarly. I honestly struggle a lot with typing and grammer, so it takes a lot out of me to speak my mind via text, but I'm glad what I mean is getting across ❤️

alright, i am not as knowledgeable as you, if you've the time mx. lydia, could you tell us everything wrong in the "damn bitch you love animals like this meme" ? :)
OP of that post probably has the best info on their reasons behind what they included but here's what I know about each issue.
-Wild animals kept as pets (fennec foxes and servals in picture): Exotic wild animals of this kind can be 'tamed' but are not truly domesticated. It is extremely difficult to keep them happy and enriched in captivity and it's pretty much definitionally impossible to do while treating them as household pets- its a having your cake and eating it too situation. Many people on social media keep exotic mammals as housepets under the guise of 'wild animal rescue', when those two sorts of animal husbandry are incompatible.
-Snake racks (those shelves in the back): Many snake breeders keep their snakes in 'racks', which are basically flat shelves with not a lot of vertical space, under the assumption that, as reptiles, they don't actually need a lot of habitat complexity to be comfortable. Such a space really limits the snakes' ability to move around and satisfy their natural behaviors; they may meet the bare minimum needed to keep an animal alive and healthy, but are by no means a sufficient habitat for a properly enriched animal.
-Spider morph python: There are some color morphs in the reptile breeding community that come with a huge amount of health issues for the animal; the 'spider morph' in ball pythons is closely linked to a neurological condition known as 'wobble' syndrome, which severely impacts the snakes ability to hold their heads and bodies steady when moving, eating, or drinking, something that can have fatal consequences and is just generally miserable for the animal to live through. These morphs are still bred for, regardless, because of the appeal of the markings to many collectors.
-Taxidermied bats: Due to their nocturnal behavior and how fragile their bodies are, it is EXCEEDINGLY hard to find an intact dead bat in nature by happenstance. Like, find a needle in a haystack rare. As a result, almost all taxidermied bats on the market are purposefully killed and hunted for the sake of taxidermy, not ethically found and preserved. The market is pretty unregulated right now, and it's wreaking havoc on bat populations in certain regions; New Zealand in particular.
-Feathers, nautilus shell, coral: Similar story to the bats. The wings and feathers in this image are from birds protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty act; it is illegal to harvest these feathers in the wild (in the U.S., at least), and finding sources where you can guarantee they've been legally and ethically harvested is difficult. The demand for nautilus shell and coral for decor and collections has contributed meaningfully to the decline of wild populations.

finally on the "healers emissaries and horses" WIP of me list and i was nervus checking if i ought to have block's horse have a docked tail for historical accuracy but i'm actually pleased to see that in most pictures of 1800s and onwards cavalry horses' tail appear either full or trimmed close to the spine but no docking... pleasantly surprised actually

#here comes honey#ottb#my farrier literally didnt text me for days so I went ahead & found another farrier bc honey's feet are SO bad right now#i made it very clear to my farrier 4 weeks ago I felt like her trim cycle needs to be shorter during the summer bc i think we lose progress#by letting her feet get so crumbly we lose good foot because crazy amounts will chip off and then it makes her sore#which compromises other parts of her body#didnt feel like any effort was made to try to make arrangements#i texted her sunday afternoon#i gave her till tuesday to say literally anything#i message her & she tells me she's doing her schedule now(on tuesday??) and she'd get back to me shortly#friday rolls around & she tells me she'll be at my place tomorrow#?!#when the new farrier will be out sunday#im so annoyed#oh well#communication is very important for business#you not giving me literally anything to work with made me feel like i wasnt being taken seriously & my concern for animals welfare was just#thrown out the window#her feet are so bad right now & this whole situation could've been avoided

The article is a good read but I love when the author feels obligated to reluctantly mention vague "concerns about animal cruelty" and then describes a practice called 'widowhood', whereby
mating pairs are kept apart, to increase their longing for each other—and, accordingly, to increase their haste to get home.
I myself would not feel sorry about that particular 'sport' dying out

Elaborate hats and fancy dresses can’t distract from the cruelty on the track at Royal Ascot.
Numerous horses have been injured, died, or been killed after racing at Ascot, one of the UK’s most dangerous flat racing tracks.
Here are six reasons why Royal Ascot – and all horse-racing events – should be shut down:
1. Horses Suffer and Die at Ascot
Over the past decade, 28 horses have died in jumps and flat races at Ascot.
Some of the causes of death have included fractured pasterns, fetlocks, cannon bones, pelvises, and legs.
Pushed to the breaking point, others have collapsed and died during or after the race.
Instead of acknowledging the immense suffering that horses are forced to endure at Ascot, race managers view fatalities as “side effects” of training and competition.
2. Horses Are Often Abused by Jockeys
Jockeys whip horses to push them to their physical and mental limits.
Almost every single year at Royal Ascot, riders breach the rules regarding whips and the horses endure severe beatings.
3. Horses May Be Drugged
Drugs, both legal and illegal, are as ubiquitous in racing as ridiculous hats are at Ascot.
Horses may be drugged to mask the pain of existing injuries and conditions, keeping them running when they should be resting or receiving treatment. And illegal drugs are sometimes used to try to make horses run faster.
For example, Mahmood al-Zarooni – a trainer with one of the world’s biggest horse-racing operations – was banned from racing for eight years for doping horses with prohibited steroids.
4. Horses May Be ‘Retired’ to the Abattoir
When horses used for racing get too old or stop performing well enough to be profitable, they’re often sent to slaughter.
Approximately 1,000 horses from the industry are killed in abattoirs in Britain every year and turned into dog food or cheap meat, while others face horrific live-export journeys to Europe.
5. They’re Forced to Race While They’re Still Growing
Making horses risk their lives on the racetrack is wrong, regardless of their age.
But it’s especially heartbreaking to learn that these animals are commonly forced to begin racing when they’re barely more than babies and their bodies are especially prone to damage.
It’s hardly surprising, then, that injuries, lameness, and exhaustion are common.
6. It’s All About the Money
Royal Ascot rewards its winners – including horse owners, jockeys, and trainers – with mammoth sums of money.
Motivated by increasing their wealth, they totally disregard horses’ health and well-being.
What You Can Do
Please help hasten the end of this exploitative industry by encouraging your friends and family never to attend horse-racing events like Royal Ascot or watch them on TV.
Betting on horse racing also bolsters this exploitative practice, so if you enjoy having a flutter, put your money on a football match or any other sport in which the participants are willing athletes, not mistreated animals.

Hey uh I just found this out and I'm FURIOUS but miami zoo has a kiwi bird. Which is fine if they were doing what we do here and keeping it in a darkened enclosure with clear notices to be quiet and not bang on the glass. But instead this shy, solitary nocturnal bird is being kept in broad daylight and people are being allowed to pet it. The kiwi I’ve seen in other AZA zoos have been kept according to the practices you describe: dark exhibit on a flipped light cycle, in a signed quiet area. What it looks like Zoo Miami is doing is… not good.

The video shows a kiwi out of its exhibit: on a table in what looks like a back room with bright overhead fluorescent lighting. The kiwi has no room to move around and no place to hide as people pet it and reach around it to take selfies.
What do you pay to bother the kiwi four days a week - a species which in NZ is apparently illegal to touch without permission from the Department of Conservation? $25.
Obviously it just started and I don’t know anything more about it than what’s online, but even so, this is such a bad look for an AZA zoo, holy shit. I know a bunch of new ambassador animal rules just got promulgated… I wonder if this meets them. I’ll have to go do some reading. Also, USDA is now promulgating new bird rules (it didn’t regulate birds until just recently, only mammals) so this will also have to pass their muster soon.
The guy who runs Miami’s PR, and manages the animal media like the birth of their first kiwi chick in 2019, is known for big media stunts. I’m not surprised by this but I don’t think it’s going to go over well. There’s a lot of pressure on zoos to offer new encounters and programs to help make up for inflation and pandemic losses but this not how to do it.
I’d honestly suggest New Zealanders who are upset about this contact Zoo Miami formally (more than just on twitter) using the contact form on their website, and maybe even the AZA to express concerns about this program animal’s welfare - as well as the lack of cultural awareness at one of their accredited facilities.
Edited to add: a statement from Zoo Miami is supposed to be forthcoming tomorrow. I’ll update once we have it.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born 95 years ago on January 15, 1929. As a Baptist minister, he advocated non-violence while promoting civil rights. He spoke for the poor, the oppressed, and the disenfranchised. While he was imprisoned in a Birmingham jail for protesting segregation, he responded to eight white ministers who had criticized him for participating in protests that they described as “unwise and untimely.”
Dr. King’s famous reply to the white ministers explained why he traveled to Birmingham from Atlanta to protest:
I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider.
While Dr. King was keenly aware of the racism that served as the understructure of the Christian church in the old South, he would be shocked by the virulent, mean-spirited, anti-Christian message that animates many (not all) evangelical congregations in America today. They form the backbone of Donald Trump's support in Iowa and beyond. They have adopted Trump's message that treats the poor, oppressed, and disenfranchised as “outsiders” and “others” who do not belong in America.
Over the last several days, we have learned that members of the Texas National Guard physically blocked federal Border Patrol agents from responding to reports of immigrants in distress in the Rio Grande. The bodies of a mother and two children were later recovered from the river in the area where immigrants were reported to be in distress.
Texas, of course, denies that its cruel actions caused the drownings—a denial that should be viewed skeptically from a state whose governor—Greg Abbott—recently commented Texas troopers could not shoot immigrants crossing the border because the troopers would be charged with murder by the Biden administration. Texas governor criticized after comment about shooting migrants | The Texas Tribune.
Similar animus underlies the recent comments of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, who withdrew Mississippi from a federal program to provide food to school children during summer breaks. Governor Reeves said Mississippi withdrew from the program to fight “attempts to expand the welfare state.”
Blocking efforts to rescue a drowning mother and her children? Regretting the inability to shoot immigrants because it would be murder? Denying food to poor children out of spite? Who are these people? How do they look at themselves in the mirror?
Ninety-five years after Dr. King’s birth and fifty-five years after his death, it is difficult to believe that people who identify as upstanding members of the Christian church can support such actions.
Another section from Dr. King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail is relevant to this moment in our nation’s history:
But the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If the church of today does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authentic ring, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. I meet young people every day whose disappointment with the church has risen to outright disgust.

And, of course, as Dr. King recognized, “there are some notable exceptions” among church leaders who supported his work—just as there are exceptions today. 1. California's Lake Oroville now at 100% capacity following megadrought; 1st time since 2019
Once a stark example of the drastic effects of California's yearslong megadrought, Lake Oroville has rebounded and is once again filled to capacity, data from the state's Department of Water Resources shows.
Lake Oroville, the state's most beleaguered and second-largest reservoir, is at 100% of its total capacity and 127% of where it should be around this time of year - a huge boost after the climate-change-fueled megadrought sucked away nearly all its water supply.
2. Blue whales are thriving in California waters – the story of their amazing comeback
If you’ve recently taken a Southern California whale-watching tour, you may have been lucky enough to come across earth’s largest animal. Pacific blue whales grow up to 110 feet long and can reach a weight of 200 tons. Decades ago, blue whales were nearly hunted to extinction, and although still listed as protected under the Endangered Species Act, marine biologists and researchers are heralding a “conservation success story,” unlike any other.
According to a study published in 2014 by researchers at the University of Washington, the West Coast blue whale population has bounced back at tremendous levels, recouping 97% of its pre-whaling population

A firefighter in Ocala, Florida, was pulling an overnight shift at the station in January when he was awakened at 2 a.m. by an alarm. He recognized the sound immediately. A newborn had been placed in the building’s Safe Haven Baby Box, a device that allows someone to safely and anonymously surrender a child — no questions asked.
“To be honest, I thought it was a false alarm,” said the firefighter, who wished to remain anonymous to protect his family’s privacy. But when he opened the box, he discovered a healthy infant wrapped in a pink blanket.
That baby would become his daughter, Zoey.
4. Iceland suspends whale hunt on animal welfare concerns
Iceland's government said Tuesday it was suspending this year's whale hunt until the end of August due to animal welfare concerns, likely bringing the controversial practice to a historic end.
"I have taken the decision to suspend whaling" until August 31, Food Minister Svandis Svavarsdottir said in a statement. The country's last remaining whaling company, Hvalur, had previously said this would be its final season as the hunt has become less profitable.
5. He wanted to pet dogs for his 100th birthday. Hundreds lined up.
Alison Moore had a unique idea to celebrate her father's 100th birthday: a pet parade filled with as many dogs as possible. Her father, Robert Moore, has always adored dogs and wanted to pet every one he saw. So, Alison took to social media and invited the community to join in the festivities. Little did she know that over 200 dogs and their owners would gather for the heartwarming event.
The parade brought immense joy not only to Robert but also to attendees like Rodger, who has Alzheimer's disease, and his daughter Denise, who hadn't seen her father smile so much in a long time. It was a day filled with wagging tails, smiling faces, and love that made Robert's milestone birthday an unforgettable celebration.
6. Historic decision: Estonia legalizes same-sex marriage
Tuesday, the Estonian government has survived a vote of no confidence in the Riigikogu tied to amendments to the Family Law Act and related legislation, which is granting same-sex couples the legal right to wed. 55 members of the Riigikogu voted in favor of the measure, while 34 voted against.
It is proposed that the institution of marriage, as defined by family law, be modified so that any two natural persons of legal age, regardless of gender, may marry. The words "man and woman" will be replaced with the words "two natural persons."
7. US approves chicken made from cultivated cells, the nation's first 'lab-grown' meat
For the first time, U.S. regulators on Wednesday approved the sale of chicken made from animal cells, allowing two California companies to offer “lab-grown” meat to the nation’s restaurant tables and eventually, supermarket shelves.
The Agriculture Department gave the green light to Upside Foods and Good Meat, firms that had been racing to be the first in the U.S. to sell meat that doesn’t come from slaughtered animals — what’s now being referred to as “cell-cultivated” or “cultured” meat as it emerges from the laboratory and arrives on dinner plates.

Actually created this blog out of interest for Greek Gods and Goddesses but there’s not many blogs that do Greek mythology x reader. Decided to post this because it’s been in my drafts for way to long...
You were born to a mortal mother, and one of possibly a hundred of Zeus’ children. Hera found out a blew up in a fit of rage that her husband had yet another illegitimate child and mistress.
She sent on a bad fortune that would end up killing your mother and intended to do the same to you. But you, just a sweet babe, she couldn’t find it within her kill you. She a goddess who protected women and children, and you being both who had no say in this scandal she felt merciful for the babe sleeping in the crib she pondered over.
She was unsure if this was foolish of her at first, but when she picked you up from the cradle you didn’t cry or thrash, you curled contently into her. Only then was she sure she had made the right decision.
If Hera couldn’t have Zeus to herself due to his tendency to cheat on her, at least she had you. You would have no responsibilities like her other children -no where to be but by her side. You would be hers and hers only.
Although Hera is depicted as a angry vengeful goddess due to her unhappy marriage with Zeus, she took her responsibility of women’s and children’s welfare seriously. Shes a good mother who holds nothing but adoration for you, careful to never concern you of conflicts within her marriage.
Hera therefore keeps you away from your father and much to her relief he isn’t interested on tearing away the one thing that’s keeping her sane. Not only is he known to be an absent father to all his children but he also is afraid of her tantrums.
Due to her motherly protectiveness over you, many believed you were the true daughter of Hera and Zeus. And those who knew of the truth of you being a illegitimate child of Zeus, decided it best not to speak against the king and queen of Olympus in fear of her wrath.
You are spoilt and cherished by the Goddess of marriage and childbirth, she insists you accompany her everywhere. It’s very rare for her to be seen without you by her side, dressed up with gold pendants weaved through your hair. As a child it was easy to keep you next to her, like carrying you or keeping you in her lap.
However as you grew, you curiosity and many others curiosity for you did to. Therefore Hera never lets you out of her sight nor let anyone speak to you without her presence, also often speaking for you. She can be unintentionally manipulative by over exaggerating the dangers of getting close to any other goddesses and gods, but it isn’t exactly a lie and you decide to listen to your mothers warnings.
She doesn’t let you grow past 18, and continues to treat you as a child. You sleep in the same bed as her and every morning she brushes and styles your hair, you accompany her to where she needs to be and she accompanies you while you continue your hobbies.
You are gifted anything you could ever ask, from animals like the sacred peacock to instruments made from gold and your very own tiara for special occasions.
Very rarely Hera grows frustrated around you and even rarer at you. But when she does she locks you in your room to not subject you to this side of her and exacts revenge on anyone but you. Just like she’s done with Zeus she would try find the root of the problem, the temptation, and blame that instead. Because her baby could do no wrong.
Zeus dreads the day a God tries to win your favour because all hell will break loose and he will have no choice but to find a way to resolve the situation to calm his wife’s dreaded wrath.
