Coping Skills & Activities for Releasing ✨Anger✨ and Other Negative Emotions
There are practically no sources on "constructive destructive coping skills", so I made this list to demonstrate the concept. A constructive destructive coping skill is an activity that helps channel destructive feelings in a healthy manner. So when you're feeling explosively angry and not sure how to channel it; or if you're feeling suicidal, homicidal, or even feeling like you want to make someone suffer and relish in their pain & suffering, try one of these constructively destructive activities below.
Tear or rip apart a sponge
Tear or rip apart paper into tiny shreds
Cut up an old t-shirt or old clothes- bonus if you can style it somehow or use the shreds to create something
Grab some old magazines and cut up all the pictures
Grab some old magazines and make a collage on a poster board to express how you feel (get creative! Rip a picture of someone in half to symbolize "feeling broken", or pick pictures that represent dreams, broken promises, expectations, failures, etc. and then cut holes in them or cut them into tiny pieces)
Rip apart an old bag/backpack, pull the zippers off the tracks
Cut up felt pieces/fabric
Cut up felt pieces /fabric & sew them together to make a blanket
Snap a branch/twig in half
Make art with condiments/splatter ketchup & mustard on a canvas
Buy/keep ceramics/ toys specifically for smashing (be safe when you smash them- set up a safe zone)
Rip a barbie dolls head off
Shave a barbie dolls head, destroy their clothes, melt their bodies with fire (be cautious of getting burned)
Cut up paper plates
Cut up paper plates into hanging mosaics (i.e. I made a giant moon & some smaller stars to hang from it and used thread to string them together)
Destroy a cardboard box
Punching bag
Make a punching bag by putting dirty laundry in a garbage bag
Use puppets or stuffed animals to vent out frustrations with a skit
Beat up a stuffed animal
Tear apart some slime, ball it up in your fist
Put on some music
Metal music/scream
Video games, from first person shooters to animal crossing, whatever your style is
Tell yourself it's okay to be angry
It's okay to express your anger in a healthy way. Its okay to be constructively destructive. You don't always have to turn it into art either. So long as you're not hurting yourself or someone else, it's okay to be destructive.
Look for a local "Rage Room" in your area- a Rage Room is a place where you can go & destroy things, usually with a bat or a hammer, while wearing protective clothes & masks
Make your own Rage Room- gather old & broken furniture, old/broken appliances, bottles, cans, etc., take them outside & hit them with a bat or a hammer (be cautious with glass! Set up a safe zone to do this! wear masks & gloves!)
Other coping skills to drain the endorphins:
Running/exercise
Yardwork
Cleaning/tidy up
Dancing
Judo/martial arts
Jumping
Punching the air
Screaming
Biting really hard on something soft like a fruit
Take a walk
Got any other ideas?? Feel free to add to the list!!
Remember to be safe!! Safety is #1!! 🌸
