the old guard is so amazing because it’s an action movie that centres love, most blatantly queer love. in this movie, not only is it shown to transcend societies and centuries just as any type of love has, but queer love is an endgame, it’s the light at the end of the tunnel. every member of the group is arguably quite tragic in their own ways but their queerness isn’t part of their trauma, it’s their joy. nicky and joe have it best because they have each other, and what they have is framed to be what the others, most obviously andy, long for. nicky and joe are the perfect scenario out of the group, because of their love. queer love in this movie is not tragic, it is joyful. it is the thing that makes the unbearable parts of undying bearable. it is put on a pedestal the way straight love has always been. their queerness is their joy. queer people can watch this movie and have it tell them ‘what you are will bring you joy’ in the subtlest of ways, because in it queer love simply is.
