it's been a lil over 2 years since I watched The Old Guard and became completely and utterly obsessed with the story and characters but can you believe in that entire time I haven't done a single full fanart of Joe?!?!? I thought it was about time I rectified that situation lol

I was inspired by the intricate geometric patterns seen in a lot of Islamic art, which I wanted to reflect the importance of Joe's faith & culture (which I hope people can get a sense of with this piece...)

"Nile, hello," Nicky greeted her with a tired smile and a short nod. He had a hand on the small of his back, as if he could support the extra weight he was carrying that way. "I thought you had gone out with Andy."

"Yeah, I wasn't in the mood to party," she replied, stirring the pot over with a large wooden spoon. As she watched the contents of the pot start to bubble, she felt herself getting hungrier, but it felt bad manners to eat in front of the pregnant, starving omega. Besides, it wasn't done yet. "Can't sleep?"

Nile knew it was a stupid question, but Nicky didn't call her on her bullshit. He nodded and Nile could see his shoulders slacken. She thought about offering him a chair, but she remembered the omega talking about how hard it has been to stand these days. If he had been in bed with Joe a few minutes prior, sitting down probably wasn't part of his current plans. "Do you want some tea?" she offered, instead. "I can make you some."

Nicky hesitated and Nile noticed his nostrils flaring. She wondered if the smell of her mac 'n cheese was bothering him. It was very likely. After all, she had added some extra cheese and hadn't cheaped out on the paprika. She knew her recipe was a sort of acquired taste, yet she felt her mouth water anyway.

"Of course," Nicky said after a beat. "Do you want me to keep stirring that for you?"

Nile looked at the pot in front of her. Between the cheddar and the paprika, the cream was almost orange, and it was bubbling, but it could use a minute longer so it didn't form any lumps. "Thanks," she said, handing the spoon over to Nicky before she could start on his tea. She might as well make her some too.

"How's Joe?" she asked after a moment, putting the tea bags in two mugs. "Getting on your nerves?"

Nicky smiled, a hand on his back and the other on the spoon, always stirring. "He couldn't, really, I am so grateful for him, but Joe-" he bit his lower lip. "He gets himself worked up too easily. I wish I could soothe him. He worries."

"Well, shouldn't he?" She asked before she could stop herself, and Nicky's face made Nile pause. "Sorry, that's none of my business."

"It's a family issue, and you are family," Nicky said gently. "You can ask me anything, and I will always be honest with you, Nile. And yes, Joe has reason to be worried, but since there's nothing he can do about my predicament, his worry only makes me worry, and no good is being achieved that way. If Joe refuses to eat because I cannot, it will only make two people go hungry instead of one. If he doesn't sleep because I can't, it's two people spending the day walking around like zombies, and that helps no one."

"That's why you're here, then?" Nile mused, pouring boiling water into the mugs. "So Joe can sleep?" Nicky didn’t reply, but his half-smile was all the answer Nile needed. "How did you manage to sneak out anyway?"

In December 2021, a dear friend and I wrote an omegaverse Christmas tale about Nile finding her place in her new family, with a fluff side of pregnant omega!Nicky and protective alpha!Joe. On that occasion, the fantastic @mer1099 gifted us with the beautiful art you guys can see here. Now, we have written the second part of that fic as a gift to someone who joined the fandom after reading that first one-shot... it's so amazing to see our TOG family growing! <3 Happy holidays everyone!
