The Foxhole Court Fic Recs
In honor of Fanfic Writers Appreciation Day, here are a few fantastic works in our favorite fandom.
Signing on the Line by andrewiel @jostenminyard | When Neil Josten is offered a position as a starting striker for a professional Exy team, he feels like all of his dreams are coming true. He signs the contract, not caring about the strict morality clause that controls who he can and can't date in the public eye. Then he meets Andrew Minyard, the top-ranked goalie of a rival team, and then Neil thinks he might just have to care after all.
This fic is ah-mazing. I read it 3 times before I could let go enough to read something else. 10/10
Something in Return by reaching_my_summit @reaching-my-summit | Andrew’s final year at Palmetto State comes to a close. His future is upon him and there are plans to be made. Years ago, Neil asked Andrew to stop smoking in exchange for something. Andrew finally knows what he wants in return.
Post canon andreil happily exploring Disney World.
light fires at night (to push back the void) by inthesea | The first time Andrew realizes he wants to hear the words, Neil isn’t even doing anything. He’s just sitting there, staring at the horizon with that stupidly dramatic faraway expression of his, and letting the cigarette burn down between his fingers all the way to the filter — an outrageous waste of good nicotine, if you asked Andrew. (Or: 20+ times Andrew and Neil say I love you, and one time they say it out loud.)
Remember that fic you read that one time when Andrew counted syllables and consonants and everything about it was just. so. good? I think everyone loves this fic. This was one I read before I read the books based on kudos, then went back and read it again.

Where You Lead by gluupor @gluupor | When Neil promised Kayleigh that he'd look out for Kevin if anything ever happened to her he'd never expected to be a single teenage father hiding out in a small town. Luckily the town's residents seem keen to adopt them. A Gilmore Girls AU where Kevin's a kid, Neil's his caffeine-addict father, and Andrew's a grumpy diner owner who loves them both.
Part of a just-the-right amount of sweet series set in a small town.
Skilled by wildfrancium @lexatargaryen | Neil has a talent for deactivating sensors that tell doctors when a patient takes their medication. Andrew, a famous Exy player, has a sensor that needs deactivating.
Very cool sci fi.
Kintsugi by SensationalSunburst @sensationalsunburst | “He saw our scars and thought they'd been fixed with gold, like the pottery in the book.” Neil blinked, stunned. “Kids this age are honest.” Andrew said, “They haven't learned to lie.”
This whole series (Small Angry Gardeners) is fantastic, featuring post canon andreil playing pro exy and living in the suburbs. This piece shows Kevin’s son reacting to their scars...it’s beautiful.
Crossfire by RoseGold_En @foxhole-pipe-dream | The year is 2073. Andrew and Aaron Minyard are twins born into a world with a strict one-child policy due to overpopulation. They take on a singular identity as "Adam Minyard", with only one of them allowed outside at a time. Siblings who are discovered are separated from their families and put into an eternal cryosleep. One day, Andrew disappears. Aaron and Nicky have to find him while maintaining the twins' cover. It's up to Aaron to find out who sold them out and why a bureau agent named "Neil" knows his brother's real name.

Penultimate chapter of Signing on the Line has been posted!
That’s right: ch 25, is up, leaving only 1 more (reportedly 20k+ word) chapter. In this chapter...Neil receives a visit from You Know Who. (Hint: He brings another black box w/him. No, Neil doesn’t like this one either.) Neil reflects on his options, all which have a high cost. Kevin + Neil have a Really Important conversation that @jostenminyard has been holding in their heart for almost a year. (It’s a great one. Yay Kevin!) And then there is that ambiguous ending. Hmmm, is it hopeful? Does it set up a trap? Or do we just have to wait a bit longer to see what unfolds? Here’s the hopeful sentence I’m hanging onto while we wait, "So the only option out of all these options is none of these options."

andrew would do anything for kevin, let’s be honest here.
“You’re making it almost impossible for me to keep my promise,” Andrew says into Kevin’s ear: that manic grin on his face once again. Sobriety never lasts long with Andrew.
Kevin shrugs, and tries not the shiver at the feeling of Andrews breath down his neck, on his skin. He tries to resist the urge to press himself even closer to Andrew just to see his reaction, despite the still sober part of his mind telling him it’ll probably end up with a knife to his gut.
He wonders if tonight he’ll get drunk enough for that not to matter.
“How so?” Kevin asks, once Andrew catches that bartenders eye that he knows (the one that makes something odd sit in the pit of Kevin’s stomach) and orders the next round.
“I said I’d protect you,” Andrew says, his breath hot. “That includes from yourself.”
Kevin lowers his gaze, watching a bead of spilled drink trail across the wooden bar. Their drinks get put down in front of them and Kevin is glad for the distraction. He grabs his own before slipping out from under Andrew’s body and disappearing into the crowd.

spite is one of the main essences in the kandreil household
especially between kevin and andrew
so neil gets used to seeing andrew climbing up a chair to reach his sweets or kevin searching for the vegetables that andrew threw away
it's a fucking mess
but what else is new
neil usually stays out of it bc “it's childish, stop it”
(he one time tried to interfere and the next day he couldn't find his clothes for running)
(he doesn't know if andrew or kevin did it)
(it was andrew)
but one day everything gets even messier
neil gets on his normal morning jog
but as he comes back, there is … chaos hell
andrew is sitting in front of the hall mirror and looking horrified
kevin sits at the couch and stares blankly at his hands
of course neil gets instantly worried
“neil, tell me that this is not real” comes from andrew
neil literally has visible ???? over his head
“i'm kevin, not andrew”
neil would think they are joking, but he never saw andrew express this much emotion before
so he looks at kevin andrew at the couch who looks at them with a frown
“do you have anything to do with this?”
“h o w would i?”
andrew’s got a headache
he reaches for the pack of cigarrettes, but oh boy
kevin did not forget who’s body andrew’s currently in

kevin goes straight to the fridge and gets the first green thing he sees
“istg, i will stuff your body with vegetables”

this is confusing
they all don’t like it

kevin takes the pack of cigarrettes to hide it
meanwhile andrew can reach the sweets in kevin’s body easily

neil has honest to god watch them as andrew eats chocolate and kevin stuffs his mouth with vegetables while they stare each other down
in absolute silence
it’s too weird to laugh
seriously
what is this
but then neil remembers they have practice in half an hour and can’t help but smirk
this is going to be fun
both don’t want to go, but neil can easily convince kevin (”it’s exy!” -”damn, you’re right.”) and andrew tags along
practice is ... even more of a chaos
the foxes are confused because they behave so differently
like
kevin showing no emotion and andrew nodding at them? what?
lots of bets are made
(did neil do that?)
(is andrew sick?)

(is there a camera somewhere?)
naturally, kevin walks towards his position until neil catches up to him
“you are the goalie now, remember?”

kevin in andrew’s body fiercely tries to protect the goal, but fails

andrew in kevin’s body couldn’t care less and doesn’t even try to hit the goal
the foxes think someone killed the real kevin
neil has to reassure them that he is still very much alive
they don’t believe him

“why are you playing this bad?”

the foxes are shocked
wymack is shocked

the foxes are about to cry
what is going on?
what is this alternate universe?
are they dreaming?
a stare down ensues yet again
i mean
they had them before between those two
but this time is really weird
(nicky whispers “aliens” to aaron)
(aaron glares but honestly? it could be possible)
wymack calls a break and tries to have a Dad Talk™ with kevin
“are you okay? do you need help with anything? like,,, y’know?”

(andrew doesn’t want to know)
of course andrew just stares him down and doesn’t answer
silence
very long uncomfortable silence
kevin tells wymack they have to go and drags andrew with him
neil is starting to enjoy this
as they come home, andrew rans headfirst into the doorframe in kevin’s body
(kevin is just too tall)
kevin laughs
andrew glares
then they all sit there, kevin and andrew on the couch, neil on the ground
trying to figure out how to make things go back to normal

even the cats are confused
sir keeps looking to and fro them like someone points a laser pointer at them
king slowly walks between kevin and andrew, sniffling them, before quickly retreating to neil
after some time, though, kevin gets sleepy and lies down on the couch
(all this thinking is tiring, okay)
he stops right above andrew’s legs (mind, his own legs from his original body and what the hell, this is confusing) and throws him a questioning look
andrew nods
“wow, you are so small, you and aaron could both fit on this couch”
andrew’s hand twitches
but he doesn’t throw kevin of the couch, so that’s a plus
(it was really tempting though)
neil just smiles at both of this idiots
his idiots
as they still can’t come to a solution, they go to bed
andrew carries kevin (or, respectively, kevin carries andrew) as he already fell asleep
it’s weird to arrange in bed
but they end up in their usual sleeping position, with andrew on the wall, neil in the middle and kevin on the edge
andrew hits his head multiple times in the night, but he doesn’t care
in the morning thankfully everything is back to normal
(except kevin awakening with back pain and andrew nearly falling out of the bed)
and if they treat each other with a little more understandment in their little banters, who is neil to mention it?
(”i guess you hit your head too many times on the doorframe.” - “i know how to duck, andrew!” cue kevin walking into the doorframe a few minutes later)
