If a worker who isn't the owner says ANYTHING similar to "I'm not really supposed to do this but-" and then does something that helps you, under no circumstances inform the business, including through reviews. You tell them that the worker was polite, professional, the very model of customer service and why you like to go there. You do not breathe a word of the rulebreaking.

Hello. Strange question...I’m having a very hard time seeing Andrew and Neil as old ppl in your glencaster fic. Do you have any old man references that you were ‘ahh yes this is them’??? This is so strange but I had to ask

my google search history just got very populated with old people. I wonder what google thinks of me.

ANYWAY this is very hard for me because i am not a very visual person and don’t have very solid reference images for my characters (i get a lot of flak in creative writing circles for never describing my characters lmao) but here’s my best try!

For Andrew I’d say the closest is Nick Offerman in this pic:

short but well maintained beard, neutral face is more scowly, but of course Andrew’s hair would be a little lighter coloured as he’s a good fifteen years older than Nick. Andrew’s maybe a lil heavier set, but Nick’s definitely got the best grouchy face for it. mostly i just picture him kinda like this

For Neil maybe Colin Firth?

good looking, but a lil unkempt, hair is usually all over the place. You just need to switch his and Nick’s eyes and you have a good approximation.

The 'write for yourself uwu' culture shift has done real damage to fic writers imo. I recently had a post on the importance of strategic commenting break containment and I'm surprised by how many strangers who rb it in agreement feel the need to reassure in the tags that they do write for themselves, but...

There is a kernel of truth in the heart of this sentiment--if you only chase stats, you are unlikely to find joy in your writing. At the same time, I think we've veered too far in the other direction.

It is only natural to want engagement and the write for yourself crowd often overlooks how communal an effort fic writing usually is. So many story ideas are born from casual discussions about h/c's and favourite scenes and what ifs and the comment box is a cornerstone of this process. Not only can the discussions in the comment box be a hub for idea generation on their own, but even when the said idea generation takes place in DMs or Discord chats, commenting is often the first/easiest way into befriending authors; it's where community building starts.

Further, the write for yourself crowd similarly overlooks that the things a writer can write for themselves are often vast and many at any given time, and relative engagement levels across fandoms/ships can play a large part in which of those ideas a writer chooses to pursue--or whether they choose to publish their finished work at all.

In sum, I don't think we need to be this apologetic as writers for wanting feedback and engagement for what we post -- writing is hard work and it's only human that we want something external out of it in turn, however rewarding the process might intrinsically be.

I have been waiting all year to post this.

I think the most radical thing the hunger games does is tell young people that the most revolutionary thing you can do is have unconditional love for humanity. Katniss throughout the entire series is guided by a deep sense of compassion for the people around her. It is what causes her to volunteer, to bury rue, to mercy kill cato, its why she tries to save peeta, why finnick telling her to remember who the real enemy is works, and even though her compassion for the larger world falters when peeta is kidnapped, it comes back when she visits hospitals and asks for mercy for other victors and ultimately, it is love and belief in a better humanity that makes her kill coin. Through it all, she maintains an unfaltering belief in the fundemental goodness of humanity, which is diametrically opposed to dr gaul's and snow's worldview. Peeta is even more unwaveringly compassionate

So the series tells young people that the most revolutionary thing you can be is compassionate. Let compassion drive your politics. Let yourself believe in the fundemental goodness of people. And i think that's deeply important in a world that touts the superiority of pure reason or logic, to allow yourself to be guided by something as emotional as compassion. Katniss everdeen tells us that your politics should be rooted in compassion in a world that thinks detatchment or cynicism is intelligence and i think thats v cool

pushing back hard against the idea that eddie should be the one to indicate to buck that they could be something. ummmmm no actually buck doesn’t need to just have another moment where he falls into something because he didn’t realize it was an option or he didn’t know he could want it until it was right in front of him. buck needs to be decisive and he needs to go in with his eyes wide open and he’s in a position to do so because eddie already sat him down and said because, evan. and maybe eddie deserves to have what he wants without feeling like he could lose what’s most important to him at any moment. buck and eddie are special because buck broke down eddie’s door once already. he should do it again. then eddie can invite him in.
