something. about. the horror of being sent on an impossible (death) quest and obligations and hospitality politics. the trauma of not having a home, and then the trauma of being in a house that becomes actively hostile to you, one that would swallow you whole and spit out your bones if you step out of line. all of this is conditional, your existence continues to be something men want gone.
it's about going back as far as I can with the perseus narrative because there's always a version of a myth that exists behind the one that survives. the missing pieces are clearly defined, but the oldest recorded version of it isn't there! and there's probably something older before that!! but it's doomed to forever be an unfilled space, clearly defined by an outline of something that was there and continues to be there in it's absence.
and love. it's also about love. even when you had nothing, you had love.
on the opposite side of the spectrum, this is Not About Ovid Or Roman-Renaissance Reception, Depictions And Discourses On The Perseus Narrative.
edit: to add to the above, while it's not about Ovid, because I'm specifically trying to peel things back to the oldest version of this story, Ovid is fine. alterations on the Perseus myth that give more attention Medusa predate Ovid by several centuries. this comic is also not about those, either! there are many versions of this story from the ancient world. there is not one singular True or Better version, they're all saying something.

i hate how commodity and capitalism has ruined so much storytelling . i hate how sequels and prequels and whatever else all ring like merch sales; i hate that i as an author have to include any social media following i have as a marketable trait; i hate that everything feels like a xerox of a copy of a dream of a memory.
i hate that my nostalgia has been turned into profit. i hate that companies fear consumer backlash so no real commentary may be made; i hate that companies care more about quantity over quality. i hate that so many artists and creators are being overworked to the point of complete collapse rather than being allowed to tell the story their way. i hate that every point of representation has to be fought for. i hate it i want us all to go back to living in a cave .
when you sit with friends over a bonfire and the night is getting long and people start telling this slow, almost hypnotic story - in this quiet voice, like they don't expect you to listen while they say the most fucked up shit you've ever heard - that is storytelling. who cares if the punchline is car hand hook door. storytelling has always been about community, about us all sitting in the dark, choosing to fill the silence while the last embers are dying. we forgot that storytelling is spellwork. hallucinating together, our breaths held, waiting for the ending we already knew was coming.

___
It took him some time, plus a lot of self-reflection and just taking it one step at a time, letting himself look at other men, this time consciously and sometimes deliberately, noticing how hot they are, how they make him feel. He let himself feel how they make him feel. It took a minute to stop feeling guilty and ashamed, and to rework all those internalized prejudices that had been ingrained in him his whole life.
He gave himself time, a lot of time, started with just chatting with guys on dating apps, later got the courage for some casual dates, and when he met the man who would be his first actual boyfriend, his first gay relationship, that he genuinely liked, he felt ready to pursue that. It didn’t work out then, that’s just life, but it was a good relationship, because he was ready for it. Now he feels settled and comfortable with himself, feels confident, and knows what he wants. And he wants- he wants love. He doesn’t want to put any pressure on any relationship he might start, but ultimately, that’s the goal. Love.
He really doesn’t mind being this first to Evan. He likes Evan. He has those bright blue eyes that seem to shine their own light, and that wide, excited smile that makes it impossible not to smile back, with that adorable dimple accompanying it, that makes Tommy melt a little every time he sees it. Plus, those perfect, kissable lips he can’t wait to taste again, and the distinctive birthmark just adding to the charm. And he’s big and strong and so hot, too. And he’s just so nice, and so adorable and endearing, and he’s so easy to talk to. Tommy just wants to keep getting to know him, spend time with him, develop this relationship and see where it can go. And with any luck, maybe this one could last, could be something real.
The thing is, Tommy is ready for serious. He can take it slow, give Evan time to figure everything out, but he’d also like to know where he stands. He would never want to pressure him to come out before he’s ready, but he also knows he doesn’t want to be anyone’s dirty little secret. Been there, done that.
Still, he would be fine with keeping it just to him and Evan for now, for as long as Evan needs. But then…

Doctor who hot take incoming. A lot of people are like, “Doctor who has always been left where the heck did all these conservative complainers come from? I bet they’re fake fans,” and while I do understand this sentiment, I also think new who does have a more conservative bent in some areas than classic. This is an American perspective so take it with a grain of salt.
In s2’s tooth and claw, the Doctor and Rose, with help from Queen Victoria herself, fight a werewolf in one of the queen’s castles in Scotland and the Koh-i-Noor diamond saves the day.
Meanwhile in classic who s16’s the Pirate Planet, the Doctor, Romana, and K9 find a planet that travels across the universe pillaging and capturing other worlds all to prop up/extend a nearly dead queen’s life and increase her power. They save the day by destroying the bridge, as in what is controlling and allowing the planet to move like this, and the queen herself.
In new who, the spoils of colonialism and imperialism save the day.
In classic who, destroying the mechanisms of colonialism and imperialism saves the day.
I’m not saying this was an intentional shift. But it is noticeable and why I think some conservatives have gravitated towards New Who specifically.
And I realize the counter argument is that this is s2, there are 11 other seasons you can look at where they grew past this. But based on what I’ve seen so far I’m honestly not sure about that. (I just finished Hellbent) But that’s a whole other argument that can be saved for another time. My point is that in new who’s most popular era, the 10th Doctor, this is the subtext, intentional or not. And I am not trying to say classic who is some bastion of leftism. My point is more there is a nationalist bent in new who. So it’s not a stretch to see why it’s got conservative fans.

Sappy ReiMobRei Marriage ... 'ficlet' (?)
Reigen & Mob "marry" in a small circle of friends and family, the one's who they trust, who accept them.
When they have their kiss, soft and tender, all the bouquets start to flourish. Every last closed bud blooms open within a few quick seconds.
Some of the guests think it's a planned stunt, there's cheers and applause. Ritsu thinks it's tacky, must've been on Reigens insistence.
But Reigen himself is confused for a moment. And when Mob reacts slightly embarrassed & apologizes and it dawns on him that it was simply his feelings overflowing, Reigen can't hold back his own either.
He's so touched he doesn't even try to find an excuse for the tears. He just takes Mob's face into his hands & kisses him more & Mob puts his own on Reigen's kissing back & there's hiccuped laughs between their lips.
This just hasn't happened in years.
Mob is well in his 20s by now & hasn't had issues controlling his emotions or powers in a very long time. This is a thing of their past, of all their overwhelming first times.
Well, it is the first time they marry.
And in this moment, if this is how much Mob loves him back, Reigen can sincerely believe it will also be their last.

I'm curious... Granny April will always be Granny April, but how do the turtle tots see Casey Marie? Since you said they know most of their family history, does this mean they know Casey wanted to train them for war? How do they feel about this? Are some of them still a little resentful or are they already at peace with what happened and are ready to have a relationship with her?
The tots actually know April has a daughter! Even if Mikey makes a sour face whenever she does, April talks about her kid to the babies and tells them that they have a cousin. Even if the kids are aware of her existence growing up they don't really question why they've never met Casey because they know that New York is still somewhat of a war zone and that their cousin is basically the leader of the rebellion so she's definitely busy (she's somewhat of a very stranged family member since the start lol). The kids never truly talk to Casey until they are adults though. Mikey felt very strongly about them being old enough to decide if wanting to meet her after knowing she created them for war and all.
Since Michelangelo was actually able to save the babies from a child soldier life, the kids are rather forgiving of what Casey did because in the end that didn't happen and by this time Casey actually is remorseful of her way of thinking when creating them and just wants to get to know them as a family member. It takes a bit of time though (the kids, even if willing to forgive her and move on, are still very much on high alert around her (cough Uno and Moja cough). After all, they know of Mikey's life story and feel a sort of kinship of anger directed towards her (It fades away in the end though).
Definitely not resentful but still not the most buddy buddies straight from the start.
