So, here are my thoughts on this whole thing. (It’s long and a lil unorganized but it be like that sometimes lmao 🤷🏾‍♀️ also I’m on mobile so can’t figure out how to do the read more option for whatever reason =/)

To give some insight to all this, I started believing kaisoo was real on April 1st 2016, the day kxk was announced. I had only been officially stanning Ek sew since cmb but knew of them since overdose era. Ks and ji have consistently been my biases. I was here all throughout the kxk era and even predicted that they would soon break up in this post. So even though I’m a little bit taken aback and somewhat wasn’t expecting this, this ain’t my first rodeo.

Although in this situation I feel like this scandal is mainly being done to cover J*nnie (I also share this viewpoint with others such as @soofection and @kaisoounderground, correct me if I’m mistaken lol) what I think bothers me the most about how this is Ji’s second time in a dating scandal is the perceptions that people have of him regarding his persona and who he really is.

Keep in mind that what I’m about to say is my own perception of things, everyone has their own way of looking at shyt but at the end of the day I don’t personally know ji so I’m not claiming anything as fact. It’s all based on what I’ve observed about him throughout the years with him being my ultimate bias not just in kpop but like..in life lol. (There are other supporters who share the same idea, like @faakeid for example.)

I feel like since e——x—-o was created, the image of a “hot, sexy bad boy player” has always been pinned on ji. Out of all the members, he’s always the one front and center with him being the face of the group. He’s is usually the one in the most eccentric or revealing clothing (cue the crop tops and black hairstyles). He has a smoldering ‘come hither’ gaze and a smirk when he dances that will send you to your knees. He plays the bad guy or ladies man roll in almost every music video, and outside of the videos he’s wearing Gucci clothes strolling through the airport like it’s his runway. He’s hot. He knows it. You know it. I know it. So it would make sense, in a heteronormative world, that he would be a real ladies man.

But it’s weird, because outside of his stage persona, ji is different. He’s shy and awkward. He doesn’t really go out much, doesn’t drink, doesn’t have too many friends. He’s extremely observant and attentive to people and takes in all that is happening around him. He giggles a lot, sleeps a lot, reads a lot. He is weak for babies and dogs. He is super sentimental and insightful and wears his emotions right there on his sleeve. I’ve never seen him not accept a fan letter in an airport. He is an almost 6foot tall grown man that owns stuffed animals lmao.

I’m not saying his stage persona is not necessarily accurate, bits and pieces of that may be the side of him that is only able to be revealed through his art (I.e dancing/performing). But I feel like even though most fans acknowledge the ka*/ji duality, as soon as a scandal comes out about him everyone forgets it and suddenly he’s just the image he portrays.

Which brings me to this jxk scandal. Maybe it’s because he’s my bias and I’m just observant and keen on getting info about ppl I like, but once again everything mentioned in the dispatch statement doesn’t match the ji who isn’t his stage persona. Placing kaisoo aside for a moment, shyt like uploading matching insta posts, dating a celeb and getting caught for the second time just doesn’t seem like something ji would do. Though cute and soft, he’s not irresponsible and most importantly he’s not dumb. He’s walked through airports with face masks on to cover facial hair, but wouldn’t wear one for a date with a very famous celebrity under a dating ban after getting caught once before? It simply doesn’t make sense, but I feel like because people are so desperate for his k*i persona to be the real him, they ignore the real him and make it make sense. It doesn’t help that the company he works for consistently pushes this image of him as well.

Same with kxk back in 2016. The rumors people came up with were absolutely vile. Shyt like blowjobs in public pools and condom receipts (both debunked to be false btw) and literally everyone ate it up. Meanwhile I’m sitting here wondering....does anyone know who ji actually is?? Like seriously has anyone actually paid attention to who he is and how he behaves/interacts with people and carries himself? He couldn’t even say the word breast on tv but he’s getting blowjobs in public pools? I mean the shyt doesn’t even sound right lmao.

It also baffles me that people continue to believe dispatch year after year, even though they’ve been proven to have released false rumors and info. Again I think it’s because people want it to be true. They want it to fit their narrative and their image of ji which is largely again, most likely just his persona. They want to believe it’s true because its an “aesthetic couple” despite the fact that (unlike ba*ky*on) we heard not a peep from ji nor krys during kxk and every single part of dispatch’s story + rumors were proven false (and I’m sure the same thing will happen again now).

But it all makes sense in their heads bc in their heads, the hot sexy playboy ji on stage is really who they think he is. Someone like him could only be with another hot and sexy woman, which brings me to my second big issue about this: the ridiculous double standards with heteronormativity in Korea and in the industry/among fans. We all know that as soon as we give even a tiny hit that we think ji and is are dating, we’ll get called insane and delusional in a heartbeat. But how is it delusional to believe this? Because they’re both boys and in the same group? Do people not realize that something like this happened already?

If anything, I feel as though it would be easier to conceal your sexuality as a gay/non-straight male within kpop as an idol (let me reiterate easier to conceal, by no means am I implying that it would make living and/or identifying as lgbtq+ easier) than it would be as a normal every day person, and the reason for this is simply because no one ever willing to acknowledge the possibility that there are gay idols. Male idols would easily be able to do things that are generally thought of to be gay w/o an issue because everyone will write it off as skinship, aegyo, a company created ship or just being an idol. Kaisoo is a perfect example of this—even with years of rumors, ‘incriminating’ photos and very obvious demeanor everyone still is convinced they are both just friends. Ji and ks have had more matching outfits than ji has with any woman, but it’s only a sign of dating when it’s with a woman. Seh*n is another example, the boy straight up said he likes men at a concert and everyone forgot about it and went on about their day. On one hand, in a way this oblivious attitude helps to ironically keep them protected I suppose. But the flip side is that the heteronormativity of it stays exactly that—the norm.

I can’t really say for sure if this has anything to do with kaisoo this time (again I’m thinking it’s to protect Jn). I guess I’m just more annoyed that if this is indeed some sort of media play, once again it’s ji who has to succumb to the image he was given, one that clearly doesn’t seem to 100% match who he is.

Editor’s Note

Winter 2021

In Louise Glück’s introduction to The Best American Poetry 1993, reprinted in her essay collection Proofs and Theories, she writes about her initial reluctance to editing that volume in the series. She attributes her “habitual refusal” of similar editorial assignments to “a kind of preening,” a “particular mode, this life on the sidelines, preferably the very front of the sidelines, with the best view of the errors of others,” in which the limitations of “one’s own preferences are never exposed because those preferences are never enacted.”

This is how I’ve felt over the past few years of scrolling the internet, tending private judgments of writing published online, occasionally tweeting from the sidelines. Amid all the noise, I’ve taken great pleasure in finding a signal, of making connections with people through their writing, of being thrilled or surprised or challenged or envious that someone else nailed what I aspire to in my own: economy of language, precision, compression, emotional truth, subversiveness, and humor. Many of these writers are parents, a perspective that grew strikingly resonant for me when I became a mother five years ago, as I sought to fill the gaps of the canon I’d studied in college with perspectives I’d overlooked. Some care for others in different ways.

Amid the grief and anxiety of life during the pandemic, retweeting from the sidelines doesn’t feel like sufficient acknowledgement that, for those of us who’ve spent any part of the last year as caregivers, the ongoing challenges of our current circumstances have made it extraordinarily difficult to create good art. Publication is a small validation, a tiny beam of light that encourages a writer to keep going.

Unlike Louise Glück, no one’s asked me to edit this journal. I’ve wondered whether it was worth attempting to create something new during a time of collective stasis. When I shared my first call for submissions, the overwhelming response was heartening, a sign there might be an audience for writing that explores the complexities of care.

At the dawn of a new administration, as we acknowledge the difficult work ahead with a renewed sense of optimism, I’m ready to, as Glück writes, “exert public influence on behalf of what I value” by creating this space to nurture art made by others and elevating the work of caregivers without siloing them.

For Nurture’s launch, I’m delighted to share some exciting flash prose: new fiction from K-Ming Chang, Shome Dasgupta, Anne Gresham, and Hema Nataraju, along with essays by Krys Malcolm Belc, Lori Sebastianutti, and Beth Kephart.

Poetry will be a regular feature in the journal, and this inaugural issue includes poems by Maya Nordine, Danielle Unger, Kelsey Zimmerman, Justin Lacour, Heather M.F. Lyke, and Lisa Pasold.

Finally, the first installment of Quick Questions, an occasional series of check-ins with artists whose work explores the complexities of care, catches up with Lindsay Hunter, co-host of the podcast I’m a Writer But.

i saw a thread of information abt the suspected nine members before they were officially announced and was like ‘yes i must stan them and love them with all of my heart.’ so uh,,,,, back in august or september??

2: What is your favorite episode of Stray Kids? uhm, i’m gonna expose myself rn and let y’all know that i’ve never actually seen a full episode of the show; as soon as i heard it was gonna be a survival show, i knew that i couldn’t watch it bc my heart was too weak and i was emotionally incapable of becoming too invested while watching it; but from clips, i quite like the episode with the 3:3:3 mission, and also the last episode when all nine were reunited and told they were going to debut together

3: Who would you say is your bias in Stray kids?

my initial one was chan, and they i got rlly confused, and then slowly came to realize that it was jeongin (anything else after that is a fucking mess)

4: Who would you say is your bias wrecker in Stray kids?

literally kill me all of them bias wreck me so hard bUT hyunjin, jisung, seungmin, and chan have been wrecking me so hard in particular lately

5: What line would you want to be apart of in Stray kids? uHHH not dance line bc swimmers have 0 coordination on land; i quite like singing even tho i’m not good at, so probably that, but i can also hit all of chan’s english rap parts in 3racha songs, and keep up with lafayette’s raps in hamilton, and a lot of the english rappers i like too so uh,,, sign me up for rap line too

6: What is the first song you heard of Stray kids? hellevator

7: What is the first song you heard of 3racha? i think it was either hoodie season or runner’s high

i love their current optimistic and slightly rebellious teenager concept rn bc its an Eternal Mood; but i always love myself a soft boyfriend concept

how proud of them i am, and how proud of themselves they should be; i would tell them about how they’re saying things that resonate deeply for their fans and i love that they’re talking abt real world problems; i would also make sure to tell them (chan and 3racha especially) to make sure to rest more, and eat well, and take care of themselves emotionally as well as physically; and finally i’d like to tell jeongin how wonderful he is and that he’s doing so much at such a young age (lmao he’s actually eight months older than me but that’s no the point) and to never lose his cute little smile

2016 Recap

Here we are now, two months into 2017, and it feels like we haven’t quite left the clutches of the maelstrom that was 2016. I know it’s generally accepted that 2016 was a terrible year (untimely celebrity deaths, political and global madness galore), but all of that aside, looking back on the things I accomplished this past year, I was actually able to experience some remarkable things and spend some really wonderful time with my favorite people. I had planned to write a post like this earlier (like right after the new year) but work became busy and things happened and frequent bouts of laziness-- you get the idea.

This was my 2016, month-by-month:

January-February: Okay honestly, I don’t really remember what happened here, except I think this is when we worked on creating English teaching materials for special needs students to be uploaded to our Center’s website.

March-April: Kind of a slump since this is the end of the school year/beginning of the new one. During my short spring break I visited Yamate, saw and appreciated proper cherry blossoms, explored Kamakura some more, and saw The Danish Girl, so that was pretty cool. Lesson learned for 2017 though: one should be at work on April 1st to meet and greet all the new employees who come with the new school year and avoid the awkwardness that comes with coming into work on like April 5th and sitting next to a stranger.

May: Even more of a slump, work-wise. H came to visit, I think? It was really nice to see someone from back home. S came to visit around Golden Week and we went to touristy Enoshima which was a Bad Idea with the GW crowds. K came to visit the week after and man, it felt like college again. So fun. Travel-wise, I visited Tochigi for the first time to see the beautiful wisteria!

June-July: My sister came to visit and we had crazy adventures around Japan and Korea. Korea was wild, but this was my main take-away message: don’t leave yogurt drinks unrefrigerated in the middle of summer. Honestly thinking about it now, Korea deserves its own separate post. Together we went to see a Monkey Majik concert (audiences here are SO SILENT it’s ridiculous-- aren’t you excited to see your favorite band??), and the limited-time Studio Ghibli exhibition in Roppongi Hills, which was incredible. C came to visit for a day too before she left Japan and we had a beautiful day, train mishaps and all.

August: Busy with seminars at the Center, but we’ve developed a knack for them now. For summer vacation, I accomplished something I’ve wanted to do since middle school--visiting M and her family in Sendai! What a surreal experience, dude. My middle school self would literally have died if she knew that this day/visit actually happened. Together we explored her hometown and traveled to Yamagata to climb 1,000 steps to reach some mountain temples (my mini-training for Mt. Fuji lol) and ate some classy food and met Blaise of Monkey Majik?? What even is my life. Also finally visited Kawagoe, although it was cloudy and a bit rainy.

September: Climbed Mount Fucking Fuji (another thing deserving its own post), visited my favorite high school’s 文化祭, and talked to some awesome people/saw some great art and photography at the Tokyo Art Book Fair. Also became certified to use an AED in Japan (major flashbacks to high school health class lol).

October: Sent in my absentee ballot, went grape-picking in beautiful Yamanashi. M came to visit me this time and it was cool to show her my little corner of Japan. Overall a quiet, busy month with more school visits than usual, and seminars at the Center.

November: Lots of seminars. On Election Day, I couldn’t focus at work at all because I was so anxiously glued to my computer screen, refreshing every 10 seconds to see the voting counts -- alas, we all know how that turned out. The Nightmare became Reality. My co-worker and I had to drink after work as we skyped our fellow American JET friend and cried over the state of our nation together. Besides that though, I had the unique experience of being an extra named Patricia Smith in a 9/11 re-enactment for a Japanese TV program (what), was invited to the exclusive JET Program 30th Anniversary party at Keio Plaza Hotel and saw the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan in the flesh and talked to some of the very first JETs who joined the program (crazy stuff), climbed Mt. Takao, saw Fantastic Beasts, and visited some art exhibitions for オレンジ and 夏目.

December: Sucked it up and finally took the JLPT (got my results a few weeks ago--hello, N3 certification!!), and went to SPAIN. Literally the trip of a lifetime, and I’m still not quite sure it really happened. So, so good to see C and A again, and to be able to travel with my Japanese co-worker friend and her brother and friends. I spoke a bizarre mix of English, what I could remember of my high school Spanish, Japanese, and even Chinese.

January (again): Okay I know this doesn’t really count because this was supposed to be a 2016 recap, but I finally finished my online 120 Hour TEFL certification course (which I had started in 2016)!! It was grossly overpriced for what it was, but I did get a few good tips out of it, and plus JET is reimbursing me for part of it, so I can deal. ALSO checked off another high school bucket list item, which was seeing Kyuhyun in concert in Yokohama (I actually always wanted to see Suju or KRY in concert, but I’m happy with Kyuhyun). Paid a slight fortune and my left kidney for it, but it was worth it to see Kyuhyun’s awkwardness and listen to his dumb jokes live.
