I finished rewatching season 1 of Yu-Gi-Oh. My redemption arc is 1/5 complete. (I have to watch the dub because I don't wanna support Crunchyroll and I don't know where else to watch the sub)
My main thoughts are about voice acting since of all the arcs, Duelist Kingdom and Domino City side stories make me the least angry.
So to start off, a comparison between Dub and Sub acting and which voice I like more as of now.
Yami: His sub voice in season 1 is honestly so cute. He just sounds like he's having a constant blast.
His dub voice on the other hand, sounds so hot 🥵. And Dub Yami is what's keeping me from doing drugs.
Overall, I like both a lot. I do however think Dan just makes the character.
Little Yugi: similar thing as Yami, only his dub voice doesn't sound hot. Just cute. I love both voices and honestly can't pick between them.
Joey Wheeler: I like his dub voice more. That's where the personality is. His sub voice just sounds generic.
Tristan: For the first few episodes of the dub, Tristan has this really stupid voice that I just don't like, so for that alone I like his sub voice more.
But then from the Rex duel and onward it's Greg Abby, and then I like both his sub and dub voice.
Téa: I think I prefer her sub voice. Just a little less grating. (I still love you Téa)
Ryou: He sounds like Gachapoid in the sub 🥺. I love Gachapoid!
His british accent tho 😩
Yami Bakura: Gachapoid doesn't suit him unfortunately. I like his dub voice more.
Pegasus: stunning. Both of them. The performance is impeccable. But Dub Pegasus never said "Jesus Christ".
Seto Kaiba: a hard one. In the sub he screams so much, but in the dub he doesn't sound like he's one insult away from killing himself... I can't decide.
Mokuba: they both sound the same.
Mai: I think I prefer dub. Just sounds deeper idk.
Weevil: I love him and his voices.
Rex: I prefer his sub voice. Just less grating and he doesn't sound like he has bronchitis.
Everyone else: meh. Could go either way.
Now to talk about the characters, and if I relearned anything:
Téa's friendship speeches are so sweet and cheesey I can't believe people don't like them. She is always there for her friends and clearly cares so much. I will never forgive Téa bashers for what they did to her during the great Yaoi Revolution.
Joey isn't as stupid as I remember him being, just a beginner at Duel Monsters. Nothing wrong with that. He's trying. His utter determination to get that money for his sister's operation is seriously so heart warming. I love whenever he says "Time roulette go!"
Tristan threw a dead body at Satan. And grabbed Ryou's leg while climbing the tower because he was getting impatient.
Yugi being uncertain of Yami until the Bakura duel is crazy. Like he wasn't even having memory issues. Bro huh? He's also so supportive! Like baby boy was the one to suggest he and Yami fight PaniK for Mai. He told Yami not to attack Kaiba and send him falling to his death. He gave Joey Time Wizard! Yugi is a bro.
Yami is such a good friend. Helping Joey out with duels, got Mai her star chips back, freed both Mokuba and Kaiba's souls because Mokuba asked, tried getting pink shirt his star chips back, and never believing that Joey couldn't duel by himself.
Ryou was, certainly there. Honestly his impact doesn't really matter. He just explains Duel Monsters to Tristan and Téa whenever Yugi is dueling. His first appearance isn't even that impressive because instead of killing himself to save everyone like in the manga, Yami switches the places of Ryou and Yami Bakura. So even if he tries to help, someone else always helps way more.
Yami Bakura is so hot. I'd suck his dick if he asked. I also just love how his deck can not only do tarot readings, but is also really annoying to go up against. Like boy had 3 morphing jars, an electric lizard, a man eater bug, and change of heart. Those cards were fucking devastating back in the day. He also would have won that duel if he used Just Desserts one turn later, but oh well. Why did he lick the millennium eye tho? I get the tarot reading, but why did he lick the eye?
Mokuba. Oh sweet Mokuba. He just wants to help his brother, but he suffers so much.
Kaiba is awesome. He hacks into Industrial Illusions and causes a satellite to crash into an office. Killing people. He helps Yami win a duel. He rips a Blue Eyes. He annihilates with Crush Card Virus. My man uses Saggi the Dark Clown. His devotion to rescuing Mokuba is amazing and is really what has me start caring for him when I first watched the series 5 years ago. His comebacks and sheer distaste for the Yugi gang are fun and amazing to watch.
Pegasus, the star of season 1. He's in my top 5 favorite characters list. I absolutely love eccentric villains, especially when they love cartoons and are actually threatening. Pegasus is a beast. If we ignore his millennium eye for now, he's a fantastic and fun duelist! His deck is interesting and entertaining to watch, neither of his duels were boring, and the man is so funny. "Do I spin it like a top, or roll it like a ball!" I love him. He's also (so far) the only villain I feel genuine empathy towards. Y'all, I'm a sap. If a villain's reason is being evil because they lost their Significant other than I'm sorry I'm crying. My poor guy.
Grandpa: he trained Joey and Yugi, he gave Yugi his deck, he appeared in dream sequences to help Yugi beat his opponents, and he gave Yugi the puzzle. If this man didn't exist, Yu-Gi-Oh wouldn't happen.
Duke Devlin: I forgot how much I hated him when I first watched his dumbass Dungeon Dice Monster 4 episode showdown. He's so fucking mean.
Rebecca: not much to say other than I like her.
The duels:
Seto vs Yami (first duel of the series): a fantastic way to start off the series. Kaiba finds out Yugi's grandpa has the Blue Eyes White Dragon card he's been searching for, he steals it, rips it, and Yugi challenges him to a duel.
Yami takes control and is surprised by Kaiba's duel arena having the ability to make life-like holograms of the monsters on the cards.
The duel begins and for the entire thing, it's honestly pretty equal. Yami summons a monster, Kaiba destroys it. Kaiba summons a monster, Yami destroys it.
It's a back and forth kind of deal until Kaiba pulls out his own Blue Eyes White Dragon card, shocking Yami. He surprises Yami again by summoning another Blue Eyes, but then gets hit with swords of revealing light.
Kaiba summons Judge Man, and it gets Destroyed by the Dark Magician.
During this, Yugi is having his doubts about winning because of Kaiba's Blue Eyes and can't seem to draw cards. Especially when Kaiba summons his third Blue Eyes White Dragon and destroys the Dark Magician.
This leads into Yami and Yugi having an inter monologue with Grandpa about Exodia. How Exodia is split into pieces. Pieces like a puzzle.
Yami gains the courage to draw and he gets all five pieces of Exodia! Instantly winning the duel!
Kaiba is then given a mind crush and starts to question all his life choices.
Rex vs Weevil (half a duel): in this not really a duel, we are introduced to two characters. Since they have names they are obviously important to the plot.
The duel starts with Rex summoning King Rex and instantly getting vortexed. Then Weevil summons his Basic Insect and equips it with Insect Lazer Cannon. This lets him wipe out all of Rex's Life Points.
Weevil is then named Regional Champion, and Rex is the runner up.
Yugi vs Pegasus (second real duel): this is where we are introduced to Pegasus as a villain.
He makes Yugi duel him on a 15 min time lock.
During this duel, Pegasus is cheating. Not just with his millennium eye, but he's sending subliminal messages to Yami. It's not mentioned in the dub, but it still happens.
Yami finds out that duel monsters was created in ancient Egypt and Pegasus starts talking up a storm so he can waste time.
Pegasus wins the duel due to the time limit and steals Grandpa's soul.
Weevil vs Yami (the third duel): This duel was initiated because Weevil decided to be a little dick and threw Exodia off the ship to Duelist Kingdom.
Yami bets his deck and star chip, Weevil bets both his star chips.
The duel begins, and we find out about field power bonuses. Insects get lower from the forest, warriors get theirs from the meadow, dragons and winged beasts get theirs from the mountains, zombies get them from the wastelands, and fiends get theirs during night time.
Unfortunately, Yami doesn't get many bonuses.
During the duel, Weevil summons a full board of monsters. He gets mirror forced.
Then he plays his Petite Moth and Cocoon of Evolution combo. He gets Burning Landed.
He then summons his Great Moth. He gets Makiyued and Summoned Skulled.
This is a simple explanation of what happened, but Yami wasn't met without struggle.
A lot of his monsters that he summoned got destroyed. They usually only lasted one turn.
Anyways, Yami won and has three star chips. Joey steals Weevil's dueling glove.
Joey vs Mai (Duel 4): this is Joey's first duel! Hooray!
He doesn't understand that his land monsters can't attack flying monsters, and gets demolished.
Mai adds several equip spells and uses Elegant Egotist to multiply her Harpie lady card.
Joey finds out Mai is cheating with perfume.
Joey then summons Baby Dragon and the Time Wizard and uses them to win the duel.
He got a star chip and his first rival!
Mako vs Yami (duel 5): Yami duels Mako Tsunami.
Mako's monsters are in the water and can't be attacked.
Yami attacks the moon and then uses his Burning Land card.
Yami wins
Mokuba vs Yami (half duel): Mokuba is trying to keep Yami from dueling Pegasus because he wants to save his brother's company.
He loses the duel.
Yami vs Ghost Kaiba (duel 6): Kaiba jumped off a cliff and died. Now his ghost is dueling Yami.
He's psychology tormenting everyone except Tristan. Mokuba quickly became distraught.
Ghost Kaiba summons his Blue Eyes one at a time, and they all get destroyed.
The first one is destroyed by the real Kaiba because OH MY! He ain't dead! That's just some fat ass pretending to be Kaiba! (Or he's Kaiba's dark half)
The second Blue Eyes gets destroyed because Yami summoned Mystical Elf and Raised the Attack points of the Blue eyes he stole from the graveyard.
Yami wins the duel!
Mokuba got rekidnapped tho.
Joey vs Rex (duel 7): Rex is dueling Joey because he wants to duel Mai, but Mai will only duel him if he beats Joey.
Joey again gets his ass beat and is saved by Time Wizard.
His spoils are some chips and the Red Eyes Black Dragon!!!!
Yami Bakura vs Yami (duel 8): in this duel we are introduced to two new characters. Ryou Bakura and Yami Bakura.
Before the duel, the gang and Ryou are talking about their favorite cards (important). Then Ryou challenges Yugi to a duel, Yami Bakura appears, takes them to the Shadow Realm, puts the squads souls in their favorite cards, then tries to steal the puzzle.
Yami challenges Yami Bakura to a duel and when he summons the Cyber Commander, he finds out that all of his have had their souls placed inside their favorite cards.
Tristan dies to the white magical hat or some shit and Joey Flame Swordsman gets summoned. Then Tristan Cyber Commander gets resurrected, then Yugi Dark Magician gets summoned, then Téa Magician of Faith gets places face down. (She's a flip monster)
Throughout this whole ass duel Yami and the gang are getting their ass handed to them.
Yami gets Morphing Jared like 3 times, had Man Eater Bug eat Joey, had Just Desserts taking life points from him, and Yami Bakura was looking at him like
(𓁹‿ 𓁹)
The whole time.
Anyway, Yami Bakura plays the Change of Heart card and we get to see Ryou in a dress.
We get to see Ryou in another dress because he betrays Yami Bakura and takes control of his Lady of Faith and tells Yugi to attack him.
Yami then thinks about how Yami Bakura took the souls of his friends out of their bodies and put them in the cards and then wonders if he can do the same. He can he does.
We then see Yami Bakura in a dress but he doesn't slay as hard as Ryou.
Yami Bakura is defeated but he took a page out of William Afton's book because he comes back instantly.
Yami vs PaniK (duel 9): This duel starts immediately after Mai gets defeated by PaniK.
Yugi calls this fucking giant of a man a bully, PaniK tries to kill him with fire, and the duel starts.
PaniK is hiding in the dark and Yami calls him a pussy multiple times.
PaniK sure is a duelist. He loses his temper easily and doesn't think about the opponent's strategy. This Leads his Reaper of The Cards to get caught in a Magic Circle (I can't remember the name) and destroyed by his monster.
PaniK gets Swords of Revealing Lighted and his Castle of Dark Illusions has its floatation ring knocked off. His monsters get destroyed and he loses.
Mai got her star chips back :D
Joey vs Kaiba (duel 10? Does this one even count?): the entire duel is Joey getting annihilated. He loses. Badly.
And Kaiba gets insulted.
Joey vs Bonz (duel 11): This duel happened because Joey got kidnapped.
We also get introduced to Bonz, Sid, Zygor, and Bandit Keith.
Bandit Keith used to be the intercontinental champion, and he hates Pegasus.
Bonz is just a little guy who doesn't really like Bandit Keith, but he wants to duel with his zombie cards. Keith is helping him out. So they just gotta work together.
Sid and Zygor are Bonz's friends. They're just kinda there.
During this duel, they are in a cave and Joey is getting scared because Bonz is ugly (no he's not 😤) and zombies are spooky.
Joey is managing pretty alright for the first half because Keith keeps making Bonz play not zombies and they keep getting destroyed.
However, Keith wanted this. Because he put a Call of the Haunted in Bonz's deck. This means that Bonz can bring his monsters back from the graveyard as zombies, they're indestructible, get stronger each time they come back, and they keep destroying Joey's monsters.
Bonz then summons his Pumpking and makes his zombies stronger, but it gets destroyed by the Red Eyes Black Dragon.
Then Red Eyes gets destroyed by ways I don't remember.
Now all Joey has left is his Battle Warrior and Sword and Shield.
He summons Battle Warrior , uses Sword and Shield, wins the duel!
The Yugi gang are now trapped in a cave and Bonz and his friends get their shit rocked by Bandit Keith.
Joey and Yami vs the Paradox brothers (duel 12): Ryou leads the gang here.
We meet the Paradox brothers. A pair of eccentric twins who can't shut up and keep rhyming.
The duel is a tag duel. Meaning they take turns, if one opponent loses all of their life points that team loses, and they can help each other out.
The duel is in a maze. Each card can move up a space for as many levels as it is.
Beaver Warrior gets destroyed instantly by the Wall Shadow, which gets destroyed by KUNAI WITH CHAIN.
Some other shit happen, Yami and Joey gotta face some tank and a worm and spider.
Don't know what happened to the tank, the spider got stabbed with Mystic Box, and the worm had something something Magical Hats.
Gate Guardian is a thing and Yami says it's in the class of Exodia even tho it's not an instant win. (Shout out Gate Guardian for getting support 😔✊)
Yami and Joey won the duel with Black Skull Dragon and make it out of the maze with some coins.
Yami vs Kaiba ( Duel 13): this duel starts after Pegasus told Kaiba that dueling him was a privilege, not a right.
Yami and Kaiba duel with the new Duel Disk system. They're using the advanced rules, that's why it's one monster at a time.
With the duel system, you can recall your monsters and replace them with a different one.
Yami falls for the Crush Card Virus trap and can now only use weak monsters.
He makes his Kuriboh wall, and Kaiba summons his Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon to try and get past it. He doesn't.
Yami then uses his stupid fucking arrow card that I can never remember the name of because it's so stupid and dumb to fuse his Mammoth Graveyard to the Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon.
The dragon starts to decay, Kaiba has a panic attack and threatens to kill himself, Yami says "Bet", Yugi stops him, Kaiba wins.
Téa vs Mai ( duel 14): Téa wants to get Yugi his star chips back and challenges Mai to a duel.
During this duel Téa summons a bunch of wimpy cards like Petite Angel and most of them get destroyed by Mai's Harpie Lady.
Mai has a bunch of equip spells on her Harpie and Téa Wabokued her once.
Shining Friendship gets summoned, gets an equip spell, and Téa activates De-spell to remove Mai's equips.
Mai surrenders and Téa gives Yugi some chips.
Pegasus vs Kaiba (duel 15): in this duel Kaiba is trying to get his brother back.
Kaiba tries to get Pegasus to use his new Duel Disk system, but it doesn't go well.
The duel begins and Kaiba destroys some of Pegasus's monsters, but then Pegasus steals a Blue eyes and turns it into an Ugly Ass Toon.
Kaiba starts losing.
We learn that toon monsters are hard to destroy because they hide in a book.
Also Kaiba falls for his own Crush Card Virus trap and loses.
Mai vs Yami (duel 16): I'm pretty sure Yami was originally being sexist, but I watched the dub so Yugi is the one actually doing most of the dueling here. He doesn't want Mai getting hurt.
Yugi and Yami keep falling for the stupid Mirror Wall thing and their monsters keep getting wrecked.
Then we see Harpies Pet Dragon.
Yugi Mind Controls it and puts it on a catapult to destroy the Mirror Wall (shit looked epic).
Harpies Pet Dragon comes back and we get three Harpie Ladies.
Yugi let's Yami help and they do the Black Luster Soldier ritual and win.
Joey vs Bandit Keith (duel 17): I love this duel.
Joey gets his entry card stolen and Mai gives him hers, so wholesome.
During the duel Joey is fucking shit up. He's doing so good.
Then Keith starts cheating. But Joey prevails.
He uses trap hole, kunai with chain, time wizard, baby dragon, red eyes black metal dragon, and time machine!
Bandit Keith is using Machines and everyone is wondering why. Like bro, machines are a good monster type with a lotta cards.
Anyway Keith is pulling cards out of his wrist band, tries to use Shield and Sword to wipe out Joey, it doesn't work, Keith loses.
Then Keith tries to say that Joey didn't use his own tournament entry card, but Joey shuts that down
Then Keith gets accused of cheating and is sent falling to not at all death.
Yami vs Joey (duel 18): we have to sit through a long ass montage.
Joey throws some cards away, Yami wonders why.
Yami falls for a few traps, then Joey falls for some traps, this whole time Ryou is explaining the birth of the universe to Téa while Tristan kinda stares off into space.
Joey uses his last Time Wizard of the season to bring out his Thousand Dragon, but Yami planned this.
Yami's Dark Magician has become the Dark Sage and he uses Makiyu to stop Joey's attack and wipe out Joey's life points.
Yami wins and I cried the first time I saw this duel.
Pegasus vs Yami (duel 19): the final duel of the arc.
Pegasus tells Yami that if he wins he gets whatever he wants, but if Pegasus wins he gets his soul and the puzzle.
Yami says he wants Mokuba, Kaiba, and Grandpa's souls to be released and Pegasus says "Damn I thought you hated Kaiba", but Yami just doing that for Mokuba.
The duel starts, and Yami is immediately having trouble. He can't destroy the rooms and the Gorgon's Eye is keeping him from defending.
Pegasus also turned Summoned Skull into a toon and it's being creepy.
Yami keeps getting his mind read and Yugi comes in like "what if we switch places?" And Yami says they should.
This gives Pegasus some trouble. It gives him so much trouble that the toon world gets destroyed and he takes the duel to the Shadow Realm.
Yugi dies.
The Yugi gang feel this and send him some good vibes.
This means Pegasus still can't read Yami's mind.
Pegasus does some shit with Relinquish and Yami tries his Kuriboh stunt and his Magician of Black Chaos is there.
Yami wins and gets the souls back.
Pegasus does like 10 minutes later.
Other shit that happened that was interesting/Important:
During the Pegasus and Yami duel, Tristan and Yami Bakura go off on an adventure to find Mokuba's body. This leads to the ring getting thrown in the forest.
The ring goes back to Ryou because love or something.
In the sub Mai offered Rex anything he wanted during their first encounter. This was changed in the dub.
We still don't know how Ryou snuck in the ship to Duelist Kingdom.
Shadi doesn't even try to find Yami Bakura. He just goes to one person (Yugi) and gives up.
I'll never forgive 4kids for editing out Yami Bakura sexily licking the Millennium Eye.
If Joey had a Magic Jammer he would have won his duel with Yami.
Domino City side stories:
Rebecca's cool. I like her.
Rebecca vs Yami (duel 20): this duel happened because Grandpa got accused of stealing Rebecca's Blue Eyes White Dragon card.
Rebecca's strategy is also pretty good for the time. Her deck is centered around milling cards to power up her Shadow Goul, and she uses cards like Witch of the Black Forest and Sangan to do this.
During the duel Grandpa is having flashbacks because he had a duel go exactly like this. We find out Rebecca is the granddaughter of Grandpa's friend, Arthur.
Yugi drew Soul Release, but didn't use it because... I don't know. We find out that's how the duel between Arthur and Grandpa ended.
Arthur appears, says some shit, and we never see Rebecca again.
That dumbass game thing:
I wasn't paying attention to this because there weren't any actual duels and I didn't like this part.
Duke Devlin:
This bitch really gonna say Yugi cheats in his duels and steal all the girls. Bro.
Duke vs Joey (duel 21): Joey almost wins, But Duke does an ass pull and wins at 50 life points.
Tumblr media
Duke vs Yami (Dungeon Dice Monsters): Duke doesn't explain shit because Yami is King Of Games and should know how to play a game he's never heard of.
Duke makes fun of Yami for not knowing how to play the game he never explained, gets angry when Yami figures stuff out, and is just an ass this whole game.
I wasn't really paying attention, until shit actually started to happen because there was just a whole lotta nothing.
Eventually both players have monsters on the field, some are doing magic, others are just standing there.
Orgoth the Relentless is certainly a thing. He gets beat by the Dark Magician.
Yami wins.
Other thoughts on the Domino City stories:
I laughed when Joey told Duke "I like ya game, just not you."
More characters gotta duel like Rebecca.
The existence of Adina is weird. If Kaiba made her, ಠ_ಠ. If the Big Five Made her, then fine I get it. Mokuba is like a damsel in distress. I just don't like it.
I hope you enjoy this long ass wall of text. My redemption is going steady. I have noticed no change other than being slightly more unhinged.
Imma do this every time I finish a season.

@ygoc-week day 3!
YU-GI-OH! 5D’s — RAIN ORICHALCUM
DECKS! Rain once had her archetype of choice countered in tournament, so she swaps decks often thanks to the lingering paranoia.
I mainly did it so I could give a lot of variety to the duels and give love to both 5D’s era and older decks that don’t get to appear in the anime! There are a handful of original cards, but I’ll go over those later. First, introducing a nice collage of ace monsters/cards representing her archetypal decks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She uses a Blue-Eyes mixed with good dragon cards as her “primary” deck and I ABSOLUTELY made an original line of Synchros: Orichalcos Dragon/Orichalcos Deuteros Dragon/Orichalcos Tritos Dragon :o) Also, because she has the anime-esque Timaeus, Hermos, and Critias cards, we get to see a lot of neat fusions! Like Hermos + Exploder Dragon, for example, making an equip spell that prevents destruction by battle, destroys the monster it battled with, but prevents battle damage
The Crimson Dragon card didn’t exist when I wrote my series, so I made my own 😂 YES they get attack and effect names! YES the characters yell them out! YES I had so much fun with this The Crimson Dragon 8-Star, LIGHT Attribute [Dragon/Synchro/Effect] [2500 ATK / 2000 DEF] 1 LIGHT Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monster(s) When this card is Special Summoned: you can target one of your opponent’s monsters. As long as this card is on the field, that monster’s effect is negated. (Ability Name: Crimson Masquerade) When this card battles a monster targeted by this effect, during the Damage Step only, this card gains ATK equal to the ATK of the targeted monster. (Ability Name: Crimson Star Flight) At your End Phase, you can send this card to the graveyard; special summon it during your next Standby Phase. (Ability Name: Crimson Molting) and a good old season 2 leveled up version of him! Akakiryu of the Sacred Flame 12-Star, LIGHT Attribute [Dragon/Synchro/Effect] [3000 ATK / 2500 DEF] 1 LIGHT Tuner + 2 or more non-Tuner monsters When this card is Synchro Summoned: You can destroy all Spell and Trap Cards your opponent controls. [Ability Name: Ignite the Sacred Flame] Once per turn, if this card is targeted by your opponent's card effect (Quick Effect): you can negate and banish that card. [Ability Name: Sacred Cinder Disarmament] Once per turn, you can deduct 1000 ATK from this card to target one monster on the field; banish that target. During your next Standby Phase, this card's ATK becomes its original (printed) ATK. [Ability Name: To Sacred Ashes]
AND NOW a fun excerpt from the fic with Akakiryu because I adore fire descriptions my friends. (From Jack's POV, and you will see Beelzeus here, I be giving the enemies some OP cards too haha)
--------------------
Rain tossed her head back. A crack of lightning lit her grin.
“I am not running.”
Fire blazed to life. Orange sparks licked the air. Water hissed against flame, and steam flooded the ground. I shielded my eyes from the blaze with my forearm. The flames spurted from the earth itself and raced around the port in a circle. I shouted, “Rain!”
“No use,” Syd said. “She’s gotta be burning alive by now, and thanks to her own psychic powers.”
My brow furrowed. The way the fire had come to life was similar to a night of war several months ago. This blaze wasn’t causing destruction, though. The memory gave birth to a mad idea.
I stretched my arm towards the flames. Fire licked my fingers. Instead of raw pain, a kind warmth found me – one I had known before. I glanced out from the awning and up to the sky. The red flare reflected against the black clouds: the full glyph of the Crimson Dragon.
Rain dropped to her knees among the flames. They clung to her skin, hair, and clothes without leaving scars. Maroon marks on her pale face, shoulders, and arms pulsed with a bright, red glow like a slow heartbeat. Fangs protruded from her kind smile. Her hands clasped together. Rain said, “White Stone of Legend tunes with Horus LV8 and Exploder Dragon. With one LIGHT tuner and two monsters, I call upon the legendary power of old.”
The flames leapt from the ground and spiraled into a pillar from her place of prayer. Cinders sparkled around her, leapt towards her duel disk, and formed a white-hot rectangle. A trio of humongous green rings formed as a column towards the sky. Their color tinged red. Rain’s eyes shot open, and their irises shifted to crimson. Her whisper echoed across the bay like the shouts of thousands. “Synchro Summon: Akakiryu of the Sacred Flame.”
A tornado of pure flames ripped to life on the pier. Gold and red blended like a blazing autumn. Black clouds scattered, and rainwater evaporated. Fiery wings extended from the twister. A lengthy, skinny tail whipped from the phenomena, and the fire scattered from the dragon’s body. Akakiryu opened its mouth, revealing a bright, yellow tongue matching the startling color of its eyes.
Rain pushed to her feet, reached out her fist, and lifted her index finger. “Ability one. Upon summoning, all of your spells and traps are destroyed. Ignite the Sacred Flame!”
The blaze returned to the earth, tearing through Syd’s backline. The remaining Block Dugout and Nightmare Wheel shattered. Rain’s Blue-Eyes White Dragon was freed from its torture. Syd said, “So what? A fancy light show don’t mean nothin’. You got 3000 attack, which don’t match up. Even if it did, Beelzeus here can’t be destroyed.”
Rain extended her middle finger. “Ability two. By deducting 1000 attack from Akakiryu, I banish one monster on the field. Beelzeus is judged not fit for this world by the strength of a god.”
“Not so fast!” Syd said. “I discard Effect Veiler from my hand to negate your monster’s abilities!”
Rain’s ring finger popped up. “Ability three. Once per turn, I negate an ability that targets Akakiryu and banish the offender. Sacred Cinder Disarmament!”
Akakiryu spit a flare into the sky. It landed on the ghostly Effect Veiler, locking it in a fiery bubble. The sphere closed to crush the monster. Rain said, “Ability two continues! To Sacred Ashes!”
Beelzeus shied back from the intense heat of Akakiryu. The dragon flapped its wings forward. A pair of flame tornadoes approached Beelzeus. The twisters spun around the black dragon. Beelzeus attempted to flee the encroaching fire to no avail. The tornadoes captured Syd’s Synchro. Their ferocity enticed a pained roar from Beelzeus. Akakiryu’s attack spiraled faster before dissipating with nary a whisper.
“Shit,” Syd said, “the hell kinda card is that?”
I found the strength to stand. “A dragon who does not lose.”
“Akakiryu’s current attack is 2000,” Rain said, “equal to your remaining life points. Direct attack! Blazing Crimson Flight!”
Akakiryu unfurled its wings. A golden flare danced to the tips. The dragon’s cry deafened the quaking thunder. Akakiryu dove onto Syd and skimmed the ground, leaving the bay ablaze. His holler could barely be heard over the roar of the flames.
A slice caught my attention. Akakiryu cut down my runner and held it in his two claws. He lowered it to sit on its wheel beside Rain and curled around her. Black ashes from the destroyed monsters clung to her sweaty skin. Her criminal mark glowed with the golden reflection of Akakiryu’s light through the dirt.
Rain beamed at the glowing monster. She leapt towards its snout and wrapped her arms around it. I was taken aback. Instead of worshipper and god, she embraced Akakiryu like a daughter to a father. Much to my surprise, the dragon shut its eyes and leaned into it.
With a chuckle, I said, “Welcome home.”

I have to ask for Droite for the character meme! (Or if you already got an ask for her, then Gauche?)
Ahhhh, first of all thank you so much for the ask! 💓 This one is special because it's about a minor character I care about a lot, and did for literal years and I'll do my best not to make this a paper scroll long (can't make promises). So let's roll! Here lays my truest thoughts on Droite/Dextra
•How do you feel about this character
You'd be surprised to know, but I did not like her character at all when I saw her for the first time.
She looked so... cold, had a lack of personality, unlikable boring character? Or maybe it was the fact she looked much older and more mature than the other main cast at the time, especially when she was strict? I can't pinpoint the specific reason, but there was really a time when I saw her as most viewers of Zexal see her as: an uninteresting boring minor character.
So how come I changed my mind? And got so attached to her to the point literal years passed and I still love her character?
The first time I ever saw Zexal episode per episode was probably when I was 10-11 years old on the TV, and Zexal was pretty popular in Italy back then, and I distinctively remember this character made an impression on me on episode 54 in her duel against Tron, with her solid strategy and clever tactics (and it was very unique compared to any other character), cause let's be real, this show is about dueling, if the character weren't good duelists, they really didn't stick to me in the long run (and Droite sure didn't give her best duel at all in that Droite and Gauche Vs Yuma duel, it was generic and boring to me), but Droite was doing very well against the main antagonist of that season, Tron (and it even made me root for her!) and the way he got around her strategy and the cards he used felt very oddly specific because of the nonesense rule that Yu-Gi-Oh women cannot win, so we can forget a minor character woman actually beating the main antagonist of that season (I understand the plot was needed to be driven forward with Tron as the main antagonist ofc lol but I have more thoughts on how they could have handled it better but I don't wish to digress) - anyway this duel stuck to me and as I said, Zexal was fairly popular in my town and I was talking about it to my friend, a frustrated naive young me saying how she felt about that the butterfly girl with purple hair losing and for some reason I didn't catch her name and my best friend told me it was "Drua" (from Dorowa but fandom decided it was Droite and I was confused but I found here in the end!), and then I searched her name on Google and saw a gorgeous fanart of her holding a butterfly and you could say my spiral started then (so in a way I am the way I am because of my friend, it's all her fault). From that point on I started to form an attachment to this character and pay attention to every time she appeared on screen, but boi young me was in for total disappointment because from that point on Droite was never given this kind of focus, or any development nor deliver a duel like that ever again (In Italian dub from 4kids they censored Droite and Gauche being homeless orphans being picked from Mr. Heartland so extra less scene 🤬). Young me also kept wondering, what happened to all those feelings she poured in ep 54? And I figured in the end that's a question only god knows, cause Zexal writers definitely don't, and so fanfics gave me much better answers. As years passed, I have to say I only grew to love her character more and more, I just kept learning new things about her and appreciated her character paying attention to every time she appeared from the limited screentime she had and I'm going to list some things I really love.
I was glad to learn that dueling wasn't something she was forced herself to learn for the purpose of training or for the sake of becoming stronger like Kaito, but it's something she enjoyed ever since she and Gauche discovered Duel Monsters when they were homeless orphans living in the streets (I feel like this adds more to her personality), and for them being only kids struggling to live day by day, found a little joy in their lives, and it even became their star of hope, something to look forward to in their hellish life (MY POOR BABIESSS I LOVE THEM MUCH).
I also love the fact Droite and Gauche treat each other as equals, they must have helped each other to get stronger by dueling one another, there is no air of superiority between them like Shark is towards Rio when it comes to dueling, so I assume Droite and Gauche have always one up the other to the point they have the almost same number of wins and losses against each other, and they must have spent their time mostly support each other as well. I love how she recognizes Gauche's move against Esper Robin instantly showing how close they are. WE NEEDED MORE SCENES OF THOSE TWO SQUABBLING, ACTUALLY, WITH THOSE THREE WITH KAITO, I NEED THEM TOGETHER IN ON LINE OKAY.
Also can we talk about how this girl had endured powerful electric shocks?? And joined up to the top 3 in elite duelists with Kaito and Gauche like the QUEEN SHE IS???
Also girlie just tasted tomato juice which was implied to be blood so casually what's up with that????? (That scene is so funny it will always be one of my favorites).
This woman is such a girlboss!!! Droite can casually fly a helicopter, run around the Tower like she owns it, being assertive in general a force to be reckoned with throughout the little time she appeared in Zexal, and humble her man to back away (THE NOTORIOUS NUMBER HUNTER TOO) and catch this man in his lies then HUMBLE HIM AGAIN IN THE W.D.C. AND YEET HIM FROM HER LANE (PLEASE THIS SCENE WILL ALWAYS BE FUNNY TO ME) .
Idgaf that she lost against Vetrix, she manhandled him in this duel, and not even his crest power from Barian world worked on her THIS IS QUEEN BEHAVIOUR RIGHT THERE.
Despite her lack of appearence in the second part and the complete abysmal decision to make her lose TWICE MORE LIKE IT WASN'T ENOUGH, I still appreciate the little contributions she was allowed to make.
I guess, a part of me is still attached to her for what she could have been? How she could have been used? (I brainrot about that every day) and it's painful to love a character that isn't very liked or even recognized while also completely understanding why, but I guess I still love her character and that doesn't seem it will change for a while.
•All the people you ship romantically with this character
I ship Droite with Kaito and no- I don't care what anyone says, if Zexal writers sent an announcement right now saying they will never be canon, I would still ship them because fanfics convinced me, cause some fans will always be better at writing romance than Zexal writers would ever dream to. I really love picking up from what was left and actually putting them to use by adding more things to the table to fix the mess, and I'm gonna die on this hill.
I also don't mind any other ships with Droite (as long as they are not problematic...) but one of my favorite rarepair has to be Droite x Akari (my comfort ship <3) - they haven't interacted once but they are both girl bosses and hot and I don't need any more reasons.
•My non-romantic OTP for this character
Just like I said in Gauche's one, this has to be Droite and Gauche. I refuse to see them through a romantic lens. It is true they share a lot of care for each other, but canonically Droite has romantic feelings for someone else and familial/platonic love exists, and interpreting them that way makes their relationship much sweeter and deeper in my eyes. Gauche being the only family that Droite has in a world where she was born with none will always be more meaningful and deeper to me than them being in a romantic relationship will ever be.
Another fact I forgot to mention in Gauche's one is although they don't have a specific label for each other in the sub, the Italian dub seems to be the only one where they actually refer to each other as "Fratello and sorella" (Brother and sister) - Kaito says "It's right that his sister duels", and although dub changes are not always for the best, I am fine with either one, in one they have a label for their relationship where it isn't left blank and it enforces their familial bond - (Droite says along the lines of "I'm his manager so I have to pull him out of this" in the sub - of course, she's not just a "manager", but at this point what do they even refer to each other... there is no label, and for two people who literally grew up together and spent so many years together, I find it odd - but on the other hand, these two never knew what the word family even meant when they were orphans living in the streets, and that being the reason for the lack of label to their relationship is just─
Tumblr media
•My unpopular opinion about this character
She best girl─
•One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon
(Omg this part will be so long I'm so sorry)
1 - In episode 54, I wish instead of Droite giving up and losing because of her own free will, they could have made it so that she couldn't handle the power of the crest and collapses right after she draws a card, after trying so hard to resist it as long as she did - first, it doesn't make her look incompetent or make her look bad and still makes Tron a threatening villain. Second, it leaves the outcome with "No result" and still leaves it ambiguous than a straight "Lose" because of the notorious "female characters cannot win because they suck" awful rule the Yu-Gi-Oh series has created that screams sexism and misogyny from the writers - and no - the fact that the audience for this show is mostly boys does not excuse it.
2 - She should have won the duel together with Yuma in episode 104. Zexal has a really tedious habit of making strong female characters sacrifice themselves to show their valor and significance - no - that's not good enough when it is done again and again (Rio for her brother, Anna for Yuma, Droite for Kaito and Gauche and... Yuma?) and god I hate this so much, they could have found plenty of ways to show that without making Droite lose, we already know how dedicated and devoted Droite is for the people she loves/cares about, she tried to call Gauche back to conscious several times and took the fall for Yuma several times, they didn't need to kick her out of the duel to reinforce that same pathetic excuse again.
3 - Droite, Gauche and Kaito are the three people who have the most connection with Mr. Heartland (than Yuma will ever be) as well as having actual reasons to retaliate against the late Mr. Heartland, as they were exploited and have suffered hell from him, so why on HELL Yuma and Astral were shoehorned into that frecking duel - I do not care they are protagonists - I do not care people love the touching moment between Astral and Yuma before they transform into Zexal III - they could have animated that exact scene in their battle against Don Thousand or any other duel - there was no reason at all that would explain this decision in terms GOOD WRITING - to rob Kaito from that duel - imagine: after Kaito wins the duel against Mr. Heartland, since Droite and Gauche were already in Heartland City because of Yuma's friends understanding the world was in danger, Mr. Heartland in his last efforts could have pleaded Gauche and Droite to help him and manipulate them telling them how he saved them as orphans and they are here today because of him. But to his surprise, they don't, instead they use their ace monsters to attack him instead and send their farewells, and Mr. Heartland meets his demise - heck, they could have been the ones to take over after Kaito collapses - no matter what anyone tells me, either of the two ways it's how it should have played out because all of those three characters meet a proper closure with this man, but zexal writers do not give a sh8t about any other characters except their precious main and that leads to bad writing.
4 - I'm not really a fan of Droite being Gauche's manager? My reason for that is Droite spends most of Zexal serving/helping/sacrificing for other characters and is never her own person, and to me this is one of many examples. It's fine that she's his manager but what I wish would happen is Droite starts to miss competitive dueling and feels confused about her feelings of doubt towards her current job, and so for the upcoming W.D.C. Tournament (becoming a yearly event) that everyone including all our beloved cast will participate in it, Droite takes it as an opportunity to seek answers she needs through this Tournament and is encouraged by Gauche as well to "get a piece of the action", so she participates as a competitor together with Gauche - it lets her be her own person instead of being a "cheerleader" for Gauche (she can still be supporting of him while being a competitor) + it shows Gauche and Droite will support each other no matter in what they do and there are no ill feelings if Droite decides to resign from being his manager.
5 - The complete lack of development or scenes between Droite and Kaito, heck, it might be as dry as the sahara desert, and for me to say it is very concerning, luckily for me fanfics exist! So for the "what I wish would have happened", there is a fanfic called "I'll Always Be With You" by AquaMagic.389 (is my canon now, and in the second chapter I WEPT) - yeah, that's what I wish had happened, it's just adding the little things in the flashback that can slowly build up overtime.
Fun fact: In the Japanese W.D.C. 3DS game in Shingetsu Rei's route as Droite is her opponent, Yuma tells some things about her to Rei and he literally blurts it out for everyone to know about Droite's feelings in public to piss her off lmaooo - and later with Kotori's help Droite confesses her feelings properly but we don't know what happens after that (damn I-) so another I wished is them having actually some development post-canon, who knows, maybe through a Tournament (my brainrot from "La puissance de zexal" fanfic from griffon chap 20 is showing) yeah I'm gonna stop right there.
6- Finally, the last point. Every anime ever has a beach or light-hearted episode, why couldn't we have that like a field trip?? Also, I always found it interesting Hart and Droite's love for butterflies, I wish I could see them having such a cute moment where Hart admires her deck and it reminds him of those peaceful days when his big brother and he would chase butterflies and would share about those days with Droite it's just-

I'm so sorry this post turned into a paper scroll after all, if you ever reached until here then thank you and sorry for making you read all that, take care and have a good day! And again, thank you so much for the ask 💖

Allow me a bit of a selfish rant, but I'm kinda flabbergasted how I have been "The card game guy" for all of my life, yet have only got card-related presents 4 times in all of my adult life.
2 times I got card-sleeves from my sister, cuz of course she would, she was my dealer and enabler of this card board vice when I was a kid, god bless her.
1 time from a friend, in a very sloppy "oh yeah, you love this card I have no use for, merry Christmas!" Kinda way, but he was totally right I love that card; I was at the game store, at the pre-release, just hoping to pull that card so he made my week that day.
And last from a high school friend last year, a Red-Eyes Retro Dragon. I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh in over 10 years, I didn't really play Red-Eyes when I did (I tried, during DM era, with close to 0 support. It was hilarious) and I'm very vocal about the negative aspects of the game. Yet he saw a card that reminded him of me and gave it to me because of that. I almost cried, I absolutely loved it, that's really all it took, I'm pretty sure the actual card is on the cents rn, but it was just the gesture of "Cards remind me of you".
And it doesn't even have to be a TCG card. I would love a new Poker Deck (used mine in questionable art projects after 'The Dark Knigh' hit theaters) a Conquian deck to sit down with dad and gramps to play, fuck I would kiss full on the mouth the first person to gift me a Tarot deck, I'm dying to get one...
Also Lorcana cards. Lorcana cards are gorgeous, and the game is young enough that you can pick up any sealed product and it would be perfect...
Anyway, as I said, selfish rant, no one has to actually gift me anything, their presence and support in my life is so much I would forever feel grateful for it without the need for anything else.
It's just that with my birthday coming close, everyone is asking what do I want for presents and I'm getting into that dilemma of "I don't want to say anything to not seem selfish, and much less I want to say cards, because I don't wanna put you on the spot, I know it's a niche hobby; but you guys have known me for years, come on!"

Went to a local Yu-Gi-Oh meetup looking like
Tumblr media
One of the guys immediately gave me his game ID, phone number, and Discord 🤭 Idk if they thought they were being sly or whatever, but I could definitely hear his friend giving him shit for seeming like he was asking me out, as he wrote his deets out on a sticky note lmao.
I got there hella late, so I only got to watch a couple of the final matches, and talk to a few of the people but I'm so ready for next time. I'ma be out there dueling someone who's super serious, and be like "I DRAW!!!", and "I must believe in the heart of the cards..." while dramatically preparing to make the draw of my life.

when i was in year 6, i used to challenge my friends at Yu-Gi-Oh with the cards during lunch time. one time, i asked my two guy friends to watch over my cards and went to put to put my rubbish in the bin, and when i returned, one of my guy friends gave me the pile back. that night, i saw that i was missing 3 of my favourite cards - were they good? not overly, but they were a present from a friend who moved to another country as a way to remember him. the next morning, before class, one of the two guy friends said, "omg, look what i found in an old puzzle box my younger brother used to have!!" and i shit you not, it was THE EXACT 3 CARDS I WAS MISSING (with like 3 others) and when i called out the friend for FUCKING STEALING THOSE CARDS THAT MEANT A LOT TO ME, he kept insisting he hadn't. when i told our teacher, she told ME OFF for making accusations. i am still fucking LIVIVID 12 years on, especially since i'm not close to that guy anymore but also because HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING, HE KNEW THE SIGNIFICANCE THOSE CARDS HAD TO ME (BECAUSE I HAD EXPLAINED IT BEFORE) AND THE TEACHER DID JACKSHIT WHEN WE ALL KNEW IT WAS SUS, LIKE LITERALLY, THE DAY AFTER I "LOST" THEM. BULLSHIT, BRO, SUCH BULLSHIT

The fact that people have to point out that self shipping with Giorno is bad just baffles me, like I know Gio was genetically engineered to be sexy thanks to his dads, but he also 100% spends hours sitting in his Don throne watching Minecraft letsplays and playing Pokemon crystal on a beat-up clear plastic Gameboy he swiped from Narancia's bedroom.
Giorno Giovanna probably collects Pokemon cards and has dabbled in Yu-Gi-Oh at least once. He also, canonically, is willing to do dumb shit to impress his friends. Episode one, kid was about to get smacked in the face by a shovel and all he did was worry about his pet froggy. He's just as cringe as the rest of the teenagers in the early 2000s. The only reason he stands out is cuz araki gave him abs (unrealistic, let him be skinny), a Jesus motif, and the ability to shatter the fabric of reality like a poorly-constructed Lego death star (which I'm sure he owns, thanks to Mista).
Giorno Giovanna is a child with a yee-yee ass haircut who thinks he's hot shit (but can kinda back it up), loves his friends, and probably thinks BBC's 'walking with monsters' is the coolest thing on television. Just c'mon y'all. Let him be cringe. Treat him like the child he is.
right like i've had to block so many people who put my art where even IN THE CAPTION i've written that he's fifteen, and yet some fucking people put that art on their horny freak blogs as if im not gonna see it and be wildly uncomfortable with it. or people reblogging my art and in the reblogs theyre like. openly tagging these gross people. free instant blocklist for me i guess what the fuck dont do that. stay away from my art yall are weird.
also the way youre describing him is so funny, purple haze feedback should've had a scene where giorno and fugo are playing mario kart 64 honestly

Wouldn't let me do a private message so here I am in the ask box about our yugioh conversation haha.
I hadn't really known what I was doing when I made my self-insert OC. I just always wanted to be part of it and I didn't want to exactly be me. I wanted to be this version of me that got to have these awesome adventures and was a badass at Duel Monsters. Also, I wasn't really writing fanfic. I played in my room or in my backyard by myself a lot as a kid so, I made up my adventures that I went on as my OC.
Also I just really loved the lore of Yu-Gi-Oh (and constantly correcting my family on how to pronounce it). And I had SOOO many cards. I think they're still at my parents' house somewhere actually. Still love it to be honest. Such a good anime and an amazing story.
Totally fair lol
That all sounds so cool! I mostly just rewatched the show over and over and over again. I have a tendency to get very emotionally invested in things so I put my whole heart and soul into watching. The Seal of Orichalcos arc especially freaked me out to the point where when I eventually pulled the card from a booster pack, I hid it n a cupboard for years 😅
I'm trying to get back into it lately. I stepped away for a few years because the one friend I had who also liked it turned out to be not a very nice person and then the franchise just reminded me of them for years. It still kind of does, but I'm trying to enjoy it anyway and hope that one day I can watch the show without thinking about them.
I'd also love to play more. I have several decks but no one to play against 😥
I did go to a con last year though where a bunch of people were playing. Someone working there gave me an unopened Speed Duel deck and I beat them first try! The deck's just gathering dust now.

8 Shows to know you
@j-ellyfish tagged me and my slow ass is finally filling this out.
1. Star Trek (Mostly TOS, but also TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Sorry, but the new stuff just doesn’t look like Star Trek to me.)
Tumblr media
This was my first fandom I guess?? I didn’t actually interact with anyone since this is before I ventured onto the depths of the interwebs. I was 10 years old and everyone kept calling me a Vulcan because of how literal I was. I did not know what a Vulcan was but soon found out and got my grubby hands on every piece of media I could find at the local library. I probably watched every VHS and read every novel they had. Spock is still my favorite to this day. I wrote my freaking GED essay about him.
2. Redwall
Tumblr media
I might have been even younger when I got into this than when I got into Star Trek. This is just so unknown no one knows what I’m talking about lolol. It was more the books than the show, but it has a short animated series so it still counts. I was obsessed with this. I made forts out of logs by the stream across the street from my house and swords out of wood and play-fought my brother with them.
3. Teen Titans
Tumblr media
This was probably my segue into anime. Yes, this isn’t actually an anime, but since it incorporates anime aspects it got me used to them?? I was very into superheroes in general when I was like 12 to 15 or so, but these were my top fave. Controversial opinion: DC is better than Marvel. I made my very first OC based on Teen Titans I think she might have been partly Star Trek too lol. I also started drawing people because of this show. Before that I only drew horses and wolves.
4. InuYasha
Tumblr media
My very first anime. It all started when I saw a manga at the library and then looked up the anime on YouTube. Ah, the memories of watching an episode in three parts and you’d never know if it would be the dub or the sub. This was the first fandom where I actually joined the interwebs and interacted with human type people. The internet in 2006 was a very different place lol. I got my first email address (which I still have lol) to join this website called Fanart Central so I could post my InuYasha fanart. I found my first online friends there too. I miss them...
5.  Pokémon
Tumblr media
I’m not entirely sure how I managed to watch as much of this as I did, but I only gave up when I got to Alola. The original is my favorite, but I also liked some of the newer stuff too. I drew art for Pokémon too and let me tell you, it’s the most toxic hell hole of a fandom ever. I’ve never gotten flames before Pokémon, all for liking an unpopular ship lol. The internet in 2010 was the Wild West.
6. Yu-Gi-Oh!
Tumblr media
Holy crap was I into Ygo. I still have my room covered in it lol. I still love it to bits, but I’ve calmed down a lot. I have a lot of cards too and I do know how to play, but not competitively and I don’t know anyone in person who wants to duel me :( I got into cosplay because of Ygo and made my first cosplay (Joey Wheeler) in 2013. I apparently like to suffer because Ygo cosplays are NOT easy. I made my still best friend in this fandom. Seriously, this is one of the best fandoms out there, most everyone is so nice.
7. Supernatural
Tumblr media
(Don’t look at me, I know pfft). I can’t deny how much I like this show... it’s honestly the one I’ve rewatched the most times. I no not know why. I guess it’s just easy to binge lol. You can blame my group of gay guy friends back in 2013 for me getting into this. It’s also why I got Netflix, and tumblr. And here I still am...
8. Hetalia

Oh wow, a Hetalia blog having Hetalia on the list, weird. Got into this at the crusty old age of 28, so I don’t have the nostalgia for it like a lot of y’all. I fell hard pretty fast. I also have made way more friends than probably any other fandom I’ve been in? Probably because I stuck my head out of my shell for a bit lol.
I tag no one because I’m lazy, do it if you want and you can blame me pfft.

Bad Things Happen Bingo! The event where you send me requests according to this marvelous card! (Red cross is the completed prompt, character headshots are prompts I’ve already filled. I don’t have any request left, so feel free to send in suggestions for this card!).
If you try to be perfect for everyone else, it will destroy you inside.
Ah yes, combine the prompt that's about feeling guilty over faults in your decisions/actions even if you could've done very little (if anything) about it with the perfectionist character. That's totally not cliché or anything. This prompt fill had like 4 different attempts with other fandoms before my brain finally settled for the 5+4=9 possibility. Not sure if it's funny or sad. I usually try to be a bit more original than that, y'know? (Let's conveniently ignore I wrote "Working Through the Cold" with a case listed on TV Tropes for the trope and, three years ago, wrote "Broken Ribs" for Yu-Gi-Oh Arc-V's Shun Kurosaki as if that hadn't happened to the guy in canon. Original my ass lol).
Anyway, I don't even know why I like Subaki as much as I do. He's not even that good of a unit, even in Birthright, but I like him. His design is cool and a character like him is easy to torture (affectionate), I guess? The game gave me a good ol' "I'm arrogant because I need to seem perfect, so I brag about my own merits when they'll never be enough for my absurdly high standards", did you expect me not to slap my hands full of dirty fingers on it? Sakura's in here because 1. I like her she's cute 2. I actually like her support convo with Subaki. A lot of supports in this game outright suck ass, but theirs is fine, it actually gives a slimmer of a slimmer of personality to Subaki and confirms Sakura is, indeed, a very good person. Also, I have a soft spot for respectful, not-that-unbalanced subordinate-superior relationships, and liege-retainer is one of the least difficult to write, so... yeet.
------------
A Stain of Camellia Oil
Summary: Perfection is an unreachable goal, an utopia of a state. By definition of being out of reach, it should be nothing but an ideal, absolutely not a way of life. Like everyone else, Subaki must've realized that some point - but not before it had poisoned him to the bone.
Fandom: Fire Emblem Fates (vague Revelation route)
Wordcount: 3K words
Event hosted by @badthingshappenbingo

Disgraceful.
Utterly and disgustingly disgraceful.
Not to mention imperfect – but gods above, this really isn’t the time to ponder upon looking less than the ideal best a human could be.
He’s better than that – Lady Sakura deserves better than that, better than a handler who can barely stand on his two feet, let alone one who’d mess up orders for a single, stupid calculating error. He, in fact, should’ve been much better than that. For her, for their army, for their people, for that other people with who they’ve gotten allied recently (and he won’t let anyone touch Lady Sakura among them, be they present as friend or foe, he’s seen too much not to doubt them, not to feel those urges to serve his liege to the death). In general, he could be better – should be better.
The idea bothers him more than it’d have bothered anyone else, if he’s to guess.
Right foot, left foot. He has to stabilize himself on his naginata, his weapon of choice nothing more than a cane. He wonders, for a brief moment, where his mount has gone, then feels the taste of iron in his mouth and busies himself coughing. He should be better than looking like, being a defenceless child on the battlefield, lost among the corpses and the injured. He’s one of those two, at the moment, and may become the other if he doesn’t pull himself together – but gods above is he tired.
unbecomingly so
Every single fibre of his muscles aches, knees threatening to buckle every time he manages to put a foot forward. His vision is fraying at the edges, the floor twirling around him, blurry and dampened. The faraway cries of his allies and enemies alike melt together until the buzzing of his ears overwhelms everything, and iron continues pouring out. He has no idea where he is or who surrounds him.
disgracefully so
The last thing he distinguishes in the ocean of black waters is a melodious voice with broken strings screaming a name simile.
Please forgive me, Lady Sakura.
A blurry vision comes to him, first silent, then haunted by familiar sounds.
Father looks at him with somewhat of a disappointed face. He, on the other hand, is scrambling to get back to his feet, albeit he tries to hide it. Everything hurts, from his head to his feet. His boots are soaked-through, his hair askew, his face covered in mud.
“Subaki, you need to get back up faster than this,” Father says. “Clean yourself up too.”
His knees are bleeding and he’s still dizzy from the hit he didn’t manage to avoid, yet he nods and straightens his legs, the rest of his hunched body following.
“Of course, Father.”
The man now wears less of a scowl and more of a moue.
“Good. You must be flawless to carry the legacy of our brilliant family. The royal family would not want anything else, would they?”
Huh. What a weird thing to remember while on his deathbed.
There are vague voices swimming through marshland around him, slowly making their way to him. Everything is monochrome, not quite black, a solid block of a colour he couldn’t possibly identify. He also can’t put a single name or word on the voices –the thumping inside his head is making it a very difficult task. It doesn’t exactly feel unsafe, even if the distinct smell of cherry blossom mixed with iron and sweat would’ve usually made him nauseous. It’s a wonder why his stomach hasn’t started churning yet.
He feels cold all around, every sense numbed as if he was buried in snow. He’s on the horizontal, yet there is something softer right under his neck – he finds he can’t move it, nor can he move most of his limbs, all heavier than lead. Even breathing has turned into a chore, the laboured sound of his own coming to him like a continuous admission of failure, all the while the feeling of fresh water on his skin slowly drags him away from the haze.
Wait. Something’s wrong here.
 He’s lying in bed.
There are people around him.
He doesn’t know any of their identities.
He must look beyond imperfect, like a raggedy doll dragged through the mud.
Pushing himself on his limbs is a painful process; yet his efforts are only welcomed with hands on his chest pushing him back, and despite how soft the touch is (to the point he’s barely registering where they are), he’s unable to resist the urge to lie back down. This is somewhat of a humiliation – which shouldn’t be his main worry at the moment, but truth be told, being pinned to bed by what seems to him to be exhaustion is nothing new.
He can just fight it off much better than that, usually. Right about now, what worries him is the fact his eyelids are so heavy he can’t see who’s around him. He doesn’t seem to be in harm’s way, at least: if he had been, they’d have slayed him before he could’ve even attempted to wake up.
A hand, almost too delicate to feel, lands on his right wrist, pressing a bandage against his skin with a silk-like delicacy. Only then does a voice finally makes sense to him.
“Please stay calm,” it says, a tinge of fear in its tremble. “You’re safe with us.”
“La…” His voice all but claws its way up his throat, coming out raw. “Lady… Sakura…?”
He finally manages to pry an eyelid open, revealing the edgeless face of his liege. To his chagrin and shame, he can’t read any expression on it.
“Indeed,” she replies, tone just as soft as her touch.
There’s a lot weighing on his mind, most of it unanswered questions he can’t ask. How did he get here? Why is Lady Sakura here when surely she has a lot more duties to attend to? Why can’t he remember anything on the top of his mind, except for the nebulous feeling of warm liquid on his hands and dizziness? Why can’t he get up?
His sight clears up enough for him to finally distinguish where they are: a settlement their army has put up, inside of those tents which he was certain he’d never have the displeasure to see in his lifetime. The pedestal he spent so long building for himself has been more than shattered, which means the question is now to figure out how he’s going to gather the pieces and glue it back together…
“You gave everyone quite a scare, Subaki,” Lady Sakura continues. Her face has now become clear enough for him to read her feelings (unfortunately, it’s another sign pointing to his failure as a retainer). “I… I thought you were going to…”
She doesn’t finish her sentence before she has recover her composure by controlling her unwoven breath.
“…to die, I assume…?”
He’s pretty much already dead in his legacy’s eyes, so may as well get this over with…
“Y-yes.”
She dries tears from her eyes again. The knife burrows even deeper in his chest.
“I’m… very sorry, milady…”
“Why… why would you apologize…?”
The reasons pulse through his mind from the root of his hair to his aching eyes (only now does he notice a blob of fabric in half his nose, which would explain some of the pressure in his head), blinding like the direct sunlight. They come to him like drops of water in a lake, the waves they emit washing over him with shame and dishonour.
He has let down the army by falling to the enemy. His survival must’ve put in jeopardy some of his comrades. Lady Sakura has seen him unwoven, stripped to his bare basics, skin and feelings alike exposed for her eyes to see – and who’s to say someone else hasn’t seen him in such a shape? Oh, the shame, the dishonour of it all… and yet she doesn’t seem to understand.
Unfortunately, his voice can’t provide explanations nor the apology he owes her – he has neither the words nor the strength of tone for either.
 “Isn’t it… obvious…?”
“I’m afraid it’s very much not, Subaki…”
Why doesn’t she get it? Why won’t the words from properly in and out of his brain?
“I… should’ve been better… than that.”
Her face still isn’t clear, and his eyelids are being heavy again. No, no, he can’t let himself fall back asleep, that’d be unfitting…
“What do you mean…?” Lady Sakura’s voice is wavering even more now.
Why doesn’t she understand? Why isn’t it coming to her? And why can’t he properly explain?
“As both your retainer… and a member of your army…”
She doesn’t let him finish his reasoning.
“…you should rest, Subaki. I’m sorry for taking your time and energy like this…”
No, it’s… It’s not what he meant to make her do! He doesn’t need rest, that’s ridiculous; he needs to apologize and explain why he needs to apologize! Rest can come later – like it comes after logistics, preening his mount and working on his skills.
The hand on his wrist leaves a cold wind behind it. Before the sound of furthering footsteps truly make sense in his mind, his eyelids have given out again, slightly lessening the pounding of his head, and he wonders why he shivers all over, why everything is so suddenly cold when earlier it was fine, if not a little warm.
Perhaps it’s the weight of his errors finally crashing down on him like the snow from the mountaintop.
A conversation comes to him in a daze. Mother is staring down on him, discontentment in every pore of her skin, in every single line of her face. In her hands, a naginata with a reddened tip, a drop flowing down the metal and down to the ground.
“Subaki! How come you are not fast enough?!”
“I am… I am trying my best, Mother,” he replies out of breath.
He can’t keep a coughing fit to himself. For a second, he’s worried about possibly spitting blood – yet he is blessed with nothing of the nature. At least, he thinks so. It’s been hard to think, lately.
“Trying is not enough! You must succeed, Subaki, not merely try!”
He staggers back to his feet. It takes all he has to remain upright, yet he puts on his best silent apology on.
“Of course, Mother.”
“You better be flawless in the near future. Your father nor I will tolerate any slump in your form and neither will the member of the royal family you are to serve.”
“I will be perfect, Mother.”
“As you should. Now, your preceptor has arrived to teach you in the military arts. Do not make him wait.”
Oh, he remembers that day. He ended up fainting before he could make it to his lesson. Mother and Father rightfully set him back up on the correct path, reminded him the royals wouldn’t tolerate lateness, even less leaves of absence; so he got back up, plastered on a heavy smile, and listened to his vaguely-faced preceptor.
Unfortunately, he can’t remember the contents of the lesson – or why he had fainted in the first place.
Waking up again is a far less difficult task than it was last time, fortunately. The fact he’s in his assigned quarters rather than the infirmary tent is rising a couple red flags he can’t ignore – let alone the shuffling noise to his right, which turns out to be Lady Sakura, her hands gently moving to stop him from moving.
He has no idea why she’s even here, but he’s a bit relieved he has regained some sort of energy, despite the pain and lethargy stubbornly clinging to his bones. He could ask, of course, especially since his throat is now less of a barren wasteland and more of a riverbank in the scorching summer… but would it be respectful to his liege? He has let her down enough as is.
“I’m glad to see you awake, Subaki,” she tells him with a shy smile, her hands already rushing to the water pot in the corner of his eye. “You must be thirsty… I suppose so, at least.”
“It’s fine, milady, I can…”
Before he can even sit up, she’s already poured water into a cup.
“Let me help you, please.”
He freezes in his thoughts – and all of his habits turn into sand, slip through his fingers, leaving him ineloquent.
“W-what?”
She hands him the cup, which he takes with trembling hands (dammit, why he can’t he control that either…?), and it takes all of his self-restrain not to drink the entire thing in one go.
His hair is down, every strand a shade of maroon shining hard against the sunlight peeking through the curtains. His skin is clammy, there are stains on the bandages he can see on his chest from where he is. His breathing is heavy and ragged. He’s barely even dressed in front of his liege.
Oh, this is a catastrophe.
“I’ve been informed that you were already doing poorly before the battle even occurred,” Lady Sakura explains. “You’ve been sleeping very little, haven’t you?”
Pretend you’re perfect.
“I assure you, I sleep plenty for someone like me, milady…”
Dammit. This is way too weak! She’s never going to fall for this! Where’s your charisma…?
“You’re human just like all of us, Subaki… You need the same amount of rest as Hana or I do, yet I’ve been told you were only sleeping a couple hours a night. Despite that, you handle so many tasks and try to make it look easy on top of it…”
He’s trying to make it look effortless? Oh no…
“It may sound presumptuous, but I can assure you, Lady Sakura, I’m fine with it.”
The bigger the lie, the easier it is to swallow up, is it not how it works?
“I have a very difficult time believing this, unfortunately…” He shoulders slump. “Your body was begging you to slow down and let it rest. According to Hinoka, you got stabbed by an enemy soldier because you got a dizzy spell when he was about to strike… I’m afraid it wasn’t due to some tactical blunder.”
Subaki, you need to be much better than this.
“Words cannot express how sorry I am, Lady Sakura. This should’ve never happened.”
You better be flawless in the near future.
“Subaki, this isn’t… This isn’t what I’m trying to tell you…”
“Then… Then…” Control your breath, or else they’ll suspect you’re uneasy, and royals don’t want uneasy handlers, handlers have to remain cool and flawless in both their words and their form. “Then pray and tell, what is it, milady?”
“I’m just asking you to stop running yourself to the ground to seem perfect… There’s no need for that. Trying your best is more than enough. I’d rather have you make little mistakes than die on the battlefield because you’re too exhausted to properly fight…”
Your father nor I will tolerate any slump in your form and neither will the member of the royal family you are to serve.
“Well…”
He’s already lost the battle, hasn’t he? He’s shown a less than ideal form, one vulnerable enough to be struck by the first soldier headed his way. This is nothing short of the ultimate humiliation, isn’t it? Is there a need to keep face anymore, when it’s been poisoning his bones and drained every last bit of lifeforce from him for years?
“It’s a lot more complicated than that.”
Lady Sakura looks down at her hands, then at the bandage on his right wrist. He hadn’t even realized he had a wound of some sort there. The fact he doesn’t even know tells more than words about whatever state he’s been able to sustain himself in for who knows how long… and it scares him more than he’ll ever admit to anyone, even himself.
Was that what his parents wanted from him, someone with a façade of perfection but none of the energy nor certitude? It’s left him with more cold-sweated fear and choking anxiety than it seems to be worth, at times, and now he’s facing the inevitable truth of the matter yet again.
Perfection simply isn’t possible – only a mirage is, but now that the illusion is gone, he has no idea of how to proceed.
He simply isn’t the retainer his liege deserves, no matter what Lady Sakura may say.
“I imagine it is,” she replies with a cautious tone. “For you to make yourself sick and pushing through it like you did, and for all the other things you’ve never let me or anyone else see… It must run deep.” She clutches her hands. “I suppose I’ll never understand. My siblings have always accepted me as I was, for who I was.”
“My parents merely set the bar high so I, as your retainer, could be the best reflection possible of you, a member of the royal family. Any mistake I make gets reflected on you and that I can’t allow.” He looks aside. “…couldn’t allow, I suppose.” He sighs, only to feel a burning pain strike him on the side. “I… I should’ve been better… than that…”
“Would… would you please stop saying that, Subaki?”
When he finally faces his liege again, he sees her face steeled with determination – this is the Lady Sakura of the battlefield, not the one Hana and he accompany in the castle or watch over during meetings with the royal family of Nohr.
“What’s done is done. I know better than anyone how hard you try and how much you work. If you’ve done your best, then you’ve done your best. Please… Please stop beating yourself over needing to sleep or getting injured! That’s just part of being human, Subaki!”
He lets out a chuckle, puts a hand to the side of his chest that aches. He must’ve damaged some bones in there.
“Disgraceful. This is all so disgraceful… Being told by my liege to take it easy, of all things.”
“Subaki, I’m just looking out for you like you’re looking out for me…”
“I suppose that’s just how things are…”
He sighs, mindful of the state he’s put his bones in – and finally feels a smile coming on.
“Can you stop torturing yourself, from now on…?”
That smile, he gives it to her.
“I’ll do my best.”
And with a levity he can only call relief, he lets himself lie back down, the sound of water poured and a bird chirping outside coming and leaving him.

So I just found out Kazuki Takahashi has just died.  I’m in shock.  Yu-Gi-Oh! was a huge part of my high school and college years.  I still have all my old Yu-Gi-Oh! cards in my room safe in a binder.  I even remember trading some cards with one of my friends during his high school graduation party.  I’m just in shock.

After seeing Kinta's comic, I felt I had to write my own post. I can't do an art. I thought about doing a oneshot but I doubt I'd do it justice and someone else probably already had and wrote that particular premise. So I'll just share my thoughts.
The truth is, part of me feels like I don't really have the right to be as impacted as I am. I never read Takahashi-Sensei's manga. I couldn't. I'm blind. I couldn't appreciate his art in any of its forms. I couldn't even watch the anime in the sub, in his native language, because I never got fluent enough in Japanese to understand it.
All I know is that, in one of the darkest times of my own life, when my family was going through difficulties I still have trouble discussing in public (Kinta you're braver than you know), Yu-Gi-Oh was there. When I ran out of Dragon Ball content, Yu-Gi-Oh was there. When I couldn't sleep, which was often—I've always struggled with sleeping at the correct times—Yugi and his friends were there in my imagination. Even when I gave up fanfic for a few years, Yu-Gi-Oh's influence was there, in Catrion and Vienata's eye-colour, in Antario's personality, in the creation of the Lanotehara.
I never saw the end of the original Yu-Gi-Oh anime. I had to find out what happened from Wikipedia, in 2012. I suspect the TV networks down here followed the US's lead and switched straight to GX. I don't think I ever saw Season 5 on free-to-air. But I fell in love with GX too, and 5D's. After that last one was so rudely cut off, however, I was disinterested in future spinoffs. I haven't watched anything past the end of Season 1 of 5D's, which I resented anyway because I'd just been hit in the gut by what 4Kids decided to make the Season finale of GX after avoiding saying characters were dying for half a season. I will never forgive whoever did that to me, and to the story being told.
In the 2010's, I found out fanfiction was a global phenomenon, and of course Yu-Gi-Oh was one of the first series I read fic for. Thanks to the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom, first on FF.net, and then Tumblr, I met many wonderful people I am glad to have in my life. @kohakuhime, @gwen-skyes, @kintatsujo, @iced-blood, @thejanestofdoes, @entamewitchlulu, @aceyanaheim, @littlemomentsofgold, @mpuzzlegirl, and others I might know less well, or didn't meet through Tumblr, or whose names I have simply forgotten at this time, but who are no less dear to me. I would not have known these people without Kazuki Takahashi's work to bring them to my attention. Yugi wished for friends, and would never know his wish was not just for him. I don't think I have enough words to express my gratitude. I'm trying, but it doesn't feel like it's remotely enough.
Thank you, Takahashi-Sensei. I hope that, wherever you are, you know how vast and positive your legacy is. Also, thanks for creating the best backstory possible for a rich kid's favourite card. Nothing will compare to the Blue Eyes White Dragon in popularity or general epicness.
