#and like ollie and hal
The generational progression of team dynamics is truly so funny to me.
You have the Justice League and they're all coworkers. They're friendly and polite with each other but they don't really hang out together outside of work. Two of them might transcend the work friend dynamic and buddy up outside of work (i.e Barry and Hal or Ollie and Hal or Bruce and Clark) but you will never see all of them casually hanging out for fun.
Then there's the Titans. These guys are friends. They all have busy lives so they maybe don't see each other as much as they'd like to but they're all deeply bonded with each other. They make a point of planning big get togethers with each other unrelated to work. They know each other's deepest secrets. Their kids consider the other Titans aunts and uncles.
Last but not least there's Young Justice. Young Justice is the definition of unhealthy codependency. They're all best friends and they act like siblings but they might also all be in love with each other? Kon dated Cassie, hit on Cissie, flirted with Bart's clone and had a dream where Bart was in a cheerleading outfit and was with his other love interests and then just everything with Tim. Cassie dated both Tim and Kon, and then there's everything with Cissie. Bart admitted that Cassie made him 'like girls' (?), took Cissie to a dance, and is extremely close with Tim and Kon to the point where it could just be unhealthy codependency but it might be something more. Honestly this entire group is so intermixed and codependent it's insane. They go from 'i love you so much you are my best friend' to 'i wanna make out with you' so fast and with barely any breathing room. They are constantly with each other and hang out at least once a week. They cannot exist separately.

Batman: Universe (2020) written by Bendis and illustrated by Nick Derington was one of the most charming and lovely batman comic i have read in a really long time. it's a silly time travel story!!! and only six issues long!
SPOILERS AHEAD, here are some out of context panels that just really amused me;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i really enjoyed how casual batman is with the people in gotham. like yeah, bruce regularly spooks residents when he grapples up the side of their building, and stops for a quick chat. the young new cops aren't exactly sure how to handle batman while others are too used to him to care anymore.
then the whole interaction with green arrow (issue 2) was SO fun! i am so fond of them and they're rarely in enjoyable comics together anymore. i particularly loved this little detail:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
at first bruce calls him oliver, but as the situation becomes increasingly more dangerous, he switches to calling him ollie! i am very normal about this.
Tumblr media
THE BATLANTERN MOMENT. this whole part of the story (issue 3 & 4) was just, very sweet. it was a perfect balance of them being prickly to each other, while also sticking close and working really well.
Tumblr media
this part of the story also features cowboy bruce and hal (sort of)!
...and then bruce was really worried about hal when he lost control and vanished from the past (he's fine), so much so that later in the story when he's dying, he mentions that he hopes green lantern is okay (in the present, hal leaves bruce a voice message to say he is okay, and hopes bruce is safe too).
oh right yeah so bruce dies (for like, a page, thank you confusing time travel mechanics) and THIS IS WHAT HE SAYS TO ALFRED:
Tumblr media
I AM SORRY YOU CAN'T HEAR ME.. TELL YOU.. HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU.. I REALLY DO........ bruce wayne when i get you (issue 4).
Tumblr media
AND THEN!!!! DICK ARRIVES (issue 5)!!!!!! i was hoping we'd get to see damian when bruce returned to the present, or that robin would come along on the time travel shenanigans, but this moment happened and i didn't even mind. it was so lovely. the duo of all time always.
Tumblr media
a lot happens after this moment (issue 6), but these little panels really spoke to me. look at him. sitting criss cross apple sauce in the face of absolute doom. the pastel coloured eternal hell was also very funny to me, as was bruce then literally jumping between different periods of time during the final fight — but i have run out of space to share those. you need to go look at them for yourself.
so idk, READ IT !!!!!!

Oliver can't stand being around the Halbarry.
Sometimes I get to thinking, how must Ollie feel knowing that his best friend, with whom he has had incredible adventures and whom he loves like a brother; is in love with the guy he can't even stand?
Imagine.
You're Ollie and one day out of nowhere your best friend starts making a bunch of comments about how cute Barry is and how much he wants to hug and spend time with him. At first you ignore him and think he's just obsessed with another blond, until you start to realize how really pushy Hal is on the subject without him even realizing it. Ollie realizes what's going on, but denies it.
He can accept anything but that.
So he talks to Dinah about it, trying to calm her paranoia.
He wants his wife to tell him that she hasn't noticed anything unusual, but his wife was quite calm on the subject and even proposes to help them be together. Of course Oliver refuses at first, not planning to accept Barry as his other brother; but after realizing how fucking in love they were and how obvious it is, he ends up disgusted and desperate to see how neither of them do anything and finally along with Dinah end up getting them to be together. Still Ollie wasn't thrilled and perhaps on more than one occasion tried to find him a date with any blonde, blue-eyed guy who was more fun than Barry, hoping his best friend would reconsider his crush.
Evidently it didn't work out.
So he ends up accepting his brother's relationship against his will.
(Deep down he's happy to see Hal so excited and knows Barry is a good choice, but Ollie is proud enough to never accept that he does like Barry a little. But only a little.)

People that say modern comics are too political must not have read a Green Arrow comic (or at not a pre-crisis one) because I picked up hard traveling heroes and was immediately hit with "Don't blindly trust authority! NAZIS ARE BAD! Question everything! NAZIS ARE BAD! Don't be racist! NAZIS ARE BAD! If there's no free will and people don't have an equal say, it's as good as a dictatorship! NAZIS ARE BAD! Saying slurs isn't cool! NAZIS ARE BAD! Care about minorities! NAZIS ARE BAD! Fight for equality! NAZIS ARE BAD!"
I'm on issue #2. Ollie has outright compared people to Nazis and Hitler at least thrice.

Anyway, I think the worst thing Geoff Johns did to Hal's character is that he just made him boring. The fun thing about Hal is that he's the worst man to walk the earth. He's a trainwreck in the making. Every day he wakes up and thinks nothing and makes 20 awful decisions and messes up everything and goes to sleep content in a job well done and it's great. Hal is the Worst Man Ever™. He's a donkey in human form. By all means his personality and skillset makes him the perfect supervillain but he's a hero and he's imperfect and he claws himself back from the brink long after most people would've given up because that's who he is. That's at the core of his character. Even when he's below rock bottom, he never gives up, and god does he hit it, over and over again.
Johns just... erased all that complexity by making Hal the bestest greatest most precious lanterny lantern ever. Suddenly everyone loves him and treats parallax as just a 'hehe! Whoops!' and it sucks because if you take away the fact that Hal is a garbage human being he's just BORING. He's just a boring stereotypical stoic superhero. Who wants to read that! Who wants to read about Universe's Best Most Precious Greatest Man Gets Praised And Solves Every Problem And Is Never Wrong. Like at least when batman does it they try to give us a detective story. Usually it's not a good detective story but they at least try. Hal doesn't need to do detectiving. He can solve pretty much anything with the ring on his finger. He's invulnerable and powerful and perfect and let's be real, at this point he barely has a secret identity. There's nothing adding stakes to the story, not when Hal the best boy is here.
It's so fucking boring!! It's genuinely an injustice to his character. Hal's much more interesting when he makes every single bad decision, ever, and then has to dig himself out of the hole that he dug. That's someone I can root for. That's a character I can develop complex feelings about. If you just hand me the perfect being in creation I feel nothing. I'm already bored.

In 1999, the speedster known as The Flash began fighting crime in Central City, Oregon, combining the inspiring presence and gentle demeanor of Superman with the facts-driven and logical mind of Batman.
Later that same year, Coast City, California would get its own hero in the Green Lantern, a cocky man who claimed to be an officer from an intergalactic peacekeeping force assigned to this sector of space.
2003 would see the appearance of the Green Arrow, a Robin Hood-like figure who would target and expose corrupt officials in Star City, Washington and surrounds.
Though not as notable as The Trinity of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, the three Heroes of the West Coast would be instrumental and important in the Silver Age of Superheroes.

Throwback to today when Barry and Hal merged their powers together (while reciting each other's oaths/mantras to pump each other up) to save their team and the multiverse

Also I love that Barry's role here is to hold Hal's hand and guide him through the multiverse like a new parent helping their baby walk for the first time.
Hal: I'm going to teleport us through space, time and reality to the other Green Lanterns!
Barry, wearing a 'Go Hal!!' t-shirt: and I'm going to make sure we actually get there alive! Go team!

Meltzer retcon people are so weird like…… how it is a gotcha that Ollie, fresh from the island and deeply traumatized after his only friend tried to MURDER HIM, is like “yeah I can’t be a dad right now- I’m gonna offer Moonday literally anything she needs to make sure Connor is provided for and I care about him and love him so I want to hold him and carry his picture with me, but I can’t be the father he deserves.”
Like why do you WANT baby Connor to have a dad that hasn’t processed any of that trauma? Why do you WANT baby Connor to be in a position where his dad is unwell and not in a place to be a present father? Why do you WANT that?

Crazy thing was, the kids were fiercely loyal to him. […] They all revered him… and they just kept trying harder to win his approval. I knew that guy. And I'd never seen him before. I remembered him… when I thought I'd put him where he belonged: beyond memory's reach. […]
For some reason, it was important to me that he understand. I know my voice stayed even when I tried to explain. I guess that's what confused Ollie… as I tried to tell him about that man I knew… and how I'd sworn I'd never be like him. Funny thing is, you don't have much say in the matter. You become what you know. And what you didn't know you knew. Like what you learn at the end of someone's arm. You learn to go blank. Like maybe things with him would change if you could just give him what he wants. If you could just take it like a man. But nothing ever did change. He just kept calling you a loser. And if he ever had a warmer opinion, you never heard about it. You took that like a man, too.
The first in-depth exploration of Hal Jordan's relationship with his father in DC Comics Presents: Green Lantern (2004) #1.
